I was made aware of this through a reddit post: we can nominate movies to be preserved in the National Film Registry, and we should nominate some Dreamworks movies. Shrek is already in it. The criteria is that the nominations must be at least 10 years old and an American film. With this in mind, I think we should nominate the following movies to be preserved in the registry:
The Prince of Egypt
Chicken Run
Kung Fu Panda
How to Train Your Dragon
You can nominate up to 50 movies at this submission form. Deadline is August 15. The Library of Congress also has a list of notable movies that haven't been preserved in the registry yet, which includes other Dreamworks movies you could nominate:
The Road to El Dorado
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
Shrek 2
Shark Tale
Madagascar
Over the Hedge
Bee Movie
Monsters vs. Aliens
Shrek Forever After
Kung Fu Panda 2
Puss in Boots 1
Rise of the Guardians
The Croods
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Penguins of Madagascar

(The last one had like 3 movies that were not Dreamworks so I'm making one that's only Dreamworks, I picked the most iconic)
Don't forget to reblog to make a larger sample size!

Just throwing it out there: why does Disney get so much criticism for not being original when Dreamworks has made a bunch of adapted films and hasn't gotten as much criticism?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Several Dreamworks films have been based on novels, fairy tales, shows, and other well-known properties. And I'm not talking about specific content. Growing up, I always heard people saying that Dreamworks was better than Disney because Disney did nothing but adaptations (which wasn't true; that's just what they were known for). I feel like on several occasions, situations pop up where people are quick to overlook or criticize Disney while Dreamworks isn't held to the same standard. A lot of Disney's adaptations have been received positively, either from critics, fans, or both. But it's still seen as too reliant on adaptations; Dreamworks also heavily relies on them, yet is seen as superior, with no one saying "they've run out of original ideas."
Note: I'm NOT criticizing adaptating works. I'm just saying those who do pertaining to Disney seem to be biased.

I love having totally not cursed cartoon lore books. Yup, not cursed at all. (yes I know the httyd book is based on the book series not the movies but its still cool to see how the books inspired the movies and cartoon).

I like how in discussions of "Best Dreamworks Movies" no one ever really talks about Prince of Egypt because it is so self evidently the best one there is nothing to talk about.

Don't mind me! Just drawing parallels between Kipo: Age of the Wonderbeasts 01x04 and The Dragon Prince 06x05
Tumblr media
- Rayla calming Esmeray, a "monster" that was terrorizing the residents in the area, in season 6 of The Dragon Prince episode 5 "Moonless Night" by singing a lullaby -
Tumblr media
- Kipo calming the Mega Monkey, later revealed to be her mother Song, in season 1 of Kipo: Age of the Wonderbeasts episode 4 "Cactus Town" by singing a lullaby -
I don't know where I'm going with this but I've connected the two dots!

On October 12th, 1994, DreamWorks Pictures was founded by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen, and former Disney chairman Jeffery Katzenberg. They have produced many films in the past 30 years, but most notably their animated films which led to the company being one of Disney’s biggest rivals in the coming decades. In honor of DreamsWorks’s 30th anniversary, here’s my Top 10 favorite animated DreamWorks movies:
1. The Prince of Egypt (1998)

2. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Dreamworks literally went from Biblical retellings to fairy tale satire to talking animal antics to epic fantasy to whacky jukebox musicals with super dark subtext.
