Just throwing it out there: why does Disney get so much criticism for not being original when Dreamworks has made a bunch of adapted films and hasn't gotten as much criticism?

Several Dreamworks films have been based on novels, fairy tales, shows, and other well-known properties. And I'm not talking about specific content. Growing up, I always heard people saying that Dreamworks was better than Disney because Disney did nothing but adaptations (which wasn't true; that's just what they were known for). I feel like on several occasions, situations pop up where people are quick to overlook or criticize Disney while Dreamworks isn't held to the same standard. A lot of Disney's adaptations have been received positively, either from critics, fans, or both. But it's still seen as too reliant on adaptations; Dreamworks also heavily relies on them, yet is seen as superior, with no one saying "they've run out of original ideas."
Note: I'm NOT criticizing adaptating works. I'm just saying those who do pertaining to Disney seem to be biased.

I like Joesph: King of Dreams but I can't ever forgive how bad they sugarcoated Jacob's family issues. Joseph makes a big stink about being only the half brother like that's why his brothers resent him but meanwhile they're still behaving mostly like one big happy family and Rachel "loves them like they're her own" (ahahahahahahhh) and it's heavily implied Jacob's ~first wife~ died and he remarried and I'm like OH NAW HE DIDN'T. literally where are Leah, Bilha and Zilpa and why are they not even mentioned. They are still ALIVE AND WELL at this point and in fact it's Rachel who should be dead before Joseph is sold off. Also, Rachel and Leah were mean to each other, none of that "Joseph, you should get along with your brothers" cheesy stuff.

Dreamworks literally went from Biblical retellings to fairy tale satire to talking animal antics to epic fantasy to whacky jukebox musicals with super dark subtext.

Rewatching Prince of Egypt and Joseph King of Dreams has given me such an appreciation of how detailed and realistically stylized the character design was.
Like just go through and look, really look at the background characters. Everyone has similar features if they're meant to be of the same race/background. The women are allowed to have pointy/angular faces that retain a softness to them. The men aren't just a bunch of square and rectangular-faced people. Hair colors and eye shapes match up really well across large groups. Children actually look like their own person and not just tiny clones of their parents. It gets down the nose shapes if you trace the lines making up the bridge of the nose.
It just... something that more stylized and 3D animation lost at some point. And I know its because companies want to reuse assets and do the bare minimum for a profit. But people genuinely enjoy the small differences that denote a person's race/ethnicity and background heritage. If only corporations would stop making token passes at making something impactful.
And yes, these tiny details mean getting more PoC behind the scenes for authenticity and giving a stronger voice so EVERYONE benefits from the experience. Not just a bunch of white dudes older than velcro making "educated guesses" with cultures they googled for twenty minutes.
But that's enough of my soap box. I have barely literate fanfics to write. /lh

why am i seemingly the only one obsessed with joseph's story like arrrrrgh i am ready to climb the walls i want a real fandom. i want people to say "oh but the technicolor dreamcoat musical is fire" and someone being mad because it's cringe. then someone replying that it's camp and sounds like a drag race rusical so it's actually good. i want people debating if prophet joseph tv series is boring or if we all are just stupid and cannot comprehend real cinematography with our tiktok attention span. i want people to write their joseph headcanons on tumblr and post outrageous fanfiction on ao3. i want the red tent stans who would be responsible for the entirety of of the fandom's wlw content. yet all i have is my imagination and i'm telling you it's NOT GOOD.
damn it's hard when you're a weirdo who's comfort character is joseph from the bible and not in a religious way

This is an aspect of this time-honored story that sometimes troubles me, and I know that different Biblical scholars as well as different lay people have very different views on it.
Note #1: Please don't reblog with answers that only relate to adaptations of the story. For example, "What he does is wrong, but his wife Asenath calls him out on it and urges him to forgive them." Not in the Bible she doesn't. No one calls him out in the original text.
Note #2: Christians are free to reblog and offer opinions – this is a Biblical subject after all – but please don't preach to me about Jesus. This story isn't about Jesus. It predates Jesus by many centuries. Besides, for the time being, I'm looking at it more from a character analysis perspective than a religious perspective.
Note #3: Please don't be antisemitic. The (arguable) moral grayness of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament heroes has nothing to do with either their Jewishness or the fact that they lived before Jesus.

I wish Joseph King of Dreams had the same passion and funding as The Prince of Egypt
Saaaaaame. I like it but nowhere near like I love PoE (pre-Egypt Joseph is so annoying qsdfsd and I HATE HATE HATE that they glossed over the family dynamics and the existence of Leah, Bilhah and Zilpah, and Dinah).
The songs are still great though (BEHOLD THE GLORY and MORE THAN YOU TAKE!!!). And some of the visuals are fire, the prison and the harvest especially.
