I've always loved the (totally canon wink) idea that dream and Nightmare are physically and emotionally connected, but just in different ways than you'd expect.

If Dream is injured, lets say he breaks his arm, it's not as if Nightmare experiences the same injury, no. But Nightmare occasionally finds himself holding his arm, or hesitating to grab something, or shifting away so something wouldn't brush against his arm. It's annoying to him, bothersome when this happens.

When Nightmare is feeling totally consumed by negativity, this horrible overbearing shadow, Dream doesn't suddenly feel horrible, no. But Dream finds himself more on edge, cautious, he feels nervous that anything may trigger what could be his very downfall. He feels like himself, sure, but there's this looming feeling that something is happening, something wrong. So he usually reaches out to his friends, he checks in on others around him. He keeps trying to find why he suddenly feels so... odd, it's like a TV was left on in his mind, playing horrible feelings not his own. And he can just never place why this happens, he just doesn't get it. He feels fine. Everything is fine. So why does his head tell him the world is ending?

Okay! Time to come back to this. I’m going to put my explanation under a keep reading tab, because I’m sure I’m going to ramble a little bit and it’ll look neater this way. 

Also, this is the first time I’m doing an analysis like this, so if I miss anything, that’s probably why. If this is confusing or doesn’t make that much sense, then that’s why. Maybe I’ll learn from this for future events (like coming back to this once the full song is released and seeing how things change), but we’ll see.

Let’s start with the first lyric:

In the name of someone I no longer know

I’ve decided to put these two together in the same bit because I think they fit this way. It’s mostly the second lyric that draws my attention in this, but when I combine it with the first one, they create a picture that I’ve written about before in my various oneshots about Dream.

See, the whole thing about Dream is that he’s trying to get his brother back. Specifically, the brother he remembers back, the one he holds dear to his heart. He views Corrupted Nightmare as someone different to that, someone lost or mistaken. He believes that, if he keeps trying, if he keeps fighting, maybe one day his brother will return to him and they can go back home, together. It will all be just as it should, once this happens.

But the fact of the matter is that Nightmare is his brother.

The only thing that has changed is how his brother holds himself, thinks about himself. Nightmare has grown and matured, learned and healed. He found a place for himself and is fighting to keep it. Nothing else, really, because they’ve always guarded the emotions of the multiverse, so that job has never been anything new. This change is natural. It’s good.

I ain’t proud of all the punches that I’ve thrown - Dream, though, is so caught up in trying to fix things and make things better, return to simpler times, that he can’t understand that. So, he pleads and shouts and fights, always in his brothers way. Because that’s the best way to make him listen. He has to stand in his way and face him, digging up their past and showing it off on a silver platter to his brother. He can see the tightening to his eyes, the way hurt seems to build up, something bitter and cold, and he can tell that all this talk of the past is something Nightmare can’t stand to listen to.

But that’s okay. He’ll see reason eventually. All Dream has to do is keep trying, right? Keep talking and trying, clinging onto the good parts of the past to make Nighty see that there is good there, that things were better there. Things will be better if they just go back. Things will be better if you just let him save you, Nightmare.

(And further along, once years have past and he’s learned a few things, maybe he’ll look back on all this and feel grief for the pain he caused. Shame for the way he clung so tightly for something that might’ve never been as good as he wanted it to be. Quiet sadness for realizing, now, that he had always been struggling to keep afloat while the world seemed all too happy to watch him drown.)

In the name of someone I no longer know - Dream knows that his brother hid things from him. He knows that. He knows that Nighty hid his pain and the way he was treated, all for him to keep thinking the villagers were his friends. So that Dream could continue to be his happiest. He knows all of this, now, and it plays on a loop in his mind while he joins Ink in protecting the multiverse.

And he sees Nightmare. The way his brother grins as they fight. The way he seems so cocky, so at ease with everything. He seems to like fighting Dream like this, likes watching him futilely try and ask him to stop this. He seems to enjoys it. And as the fight wears on, even as his smile slips into a hard line, his shoulders still stay relaxed, voice still calm. He doesn’t respond to anything Dream says, really, saying something else instead, something to try and steer the topic off course.

Dream watches him and, sometimes, wonders why. Why does he act like this? Why wasn’t he surprised to see him out of stone? Why did he seem so...resigned? Why did he act like this was not something he was wrong for doing, something the villagers would’ve punished him for?

(Why does he seem to be a different person? Why is he so unfamiliar?)

So, Dream fights and stays in his bubble of the past, always reaching a hand towards his brother. But its like is hand is always slightly to the left, never reaching for the brother in front of him, but the one he remembers. The one who is nothing more than a memory.

Now, the second lyric:

For the shame of being young, drunk, and alone

Traffic lights and a transmitter radio

This lyrics includes things from our world that might now be exactly applicable to Dream and his situation. But, that doesn’t mean the lyrics don’t fit; instead, if we shift how we view them, the meaning of the words change, still holding the same message.

Take, for example, the word drunk here. Obviously, this talks about being drunk on alcohol. However, that’s not the only thing you can be drunk on. You can be drunk on power, drunk on happiness, drunk on ignorance. Drunk is a versatile word that can be used to create millions of metaphors. In this song and this context, I view it as to mean Dream is drunk off of a mixture of things: the past, longing, being alone, and being immature.

Traffic lights and a transmitter radio are similar. Traffic lights are signs, they tell you when to stop, slow down or move on. In this case, the traffic lights can be the multiverse occupants themselves, as they always have a job for Dream and are influencing him on where to go, what to do. A transmitter radio is more abstract, but I tend to view it as this: Dream calling on his brother, literally or not, and it being a one way street, him always talking and waiting for a response that never comes. These two work together to further put Dream in a helpless place, stuck in the middle of everything.

For the shame of being young, drunk, and alone - To further explain, Dream, just getting out of stone, is young. Nevermind whatever age you think he was when the apple incident took place, when you compare that to Nightmare’s hundreds of years he’s lived, it’s so young. Dream trips over himself constantly at the start, learning how to use his magic, his weapons, what it means to be a guardian of so many people. He learns how to spread positivity, how to combat negativity. He learns how to look at his brother and swallow his love for him during a fight. He learns, and yet...

He doesn’t grow, exactly. How can he? He doing the same thing he was doing before the incident: helping others and protecting them from negativity. It’s the same, so his understanding of himself and the way things should be stays the same. If you don’t have room to explore and learn a different perspective, how can you grow as a person and better yourself?

So, he’s stuck on this pedestal in the spotlight, searching the crowd for a speck of something, anything. He’s blinded from the attention and expectations put on him. He looks for his brother and can’t see him. He stands there, one half of a pair, and aches. 

He’s all alone.

(Don’t be shameful for doing your job. Take pride in being a hero.

How can he, though, when his brother looks at him with pity, like all this is some kind of trick or façade that is being pulled on him?

All he can do is avoid his gaze and pretend he didn’t see it.)

Traffic lights and a transmitter radio - Everyone tells him to keep doing, that he’s doing a good job. He’s helping to stop negativity from engulfing the multiverse. Who wouldn’t be proud of that? And yet, as he stands there, he can’t help but call out to his brother, who never answers. He can surely feel the calling, though, can feel the waves of energy reaching out.

And yet, no answer. 

(There’s nothing. Nobody to tell him if this is really good or bad. If he’s good or bad, for doing what he’s doing.)

Traffic lights and a transmitter radio

Later on, Dream feels shame in this. Being so blind. And yet, he also understands because habits die hard and he still struggles with this. He wishes he could show himself the truth, that his brother was still there right in front of him, that he was so much more than someone who helped others. He wishes, and yet, he does not.

Because the growth he found can only be true under experience alone. Taking the journey alone and learning as he did is the only way to a good ending.

Now, the third lyric:

I gave your name as my emergency phone call

Going down a different path here, lets talk about Dream crawling his way through life, grasping onto any reason he can find to keep doing what he’s always known: someone who fulfills orders given to them. Lets talk about the multiverse getting angry that he hasn’t permanently stopped his brother yet. Lets talk about him cutting ties with his friends to focus more on this task, feeling guilty for taking so long. Lets talk about the pressure and the overwhelmingness of it all. 

I don’t like that when they threw me in that car - Lets talk about, when he’s finally reached rock bottom, he calls out to his brother again. He’s desperate and aching, and it’s a strange parallel to the apple incident, isn’t it? The way he’s on his knees in front of a crowd of people, begging for a second chance to make things right, and his brother is somewhere in the crowd, watching his humiliation. 

The way he’s calling and asking people to call too.

(Desperate times call for desperate measures.)

I gave your name as my emergency phone call - Nightmare has always been his other half, the one that knows him better than himself. What better person to call on for help when he’s this desperate for guidance? Who else would give him the honesty he needs? All his brother has to do is answer the goddamn phone and talk to him.

Please. He’s out here, failing and hurting and hopeless. He needs his brother. Please, let him have his brother.

And yet, at the same time, there’s a bitterness lining his own mouth, because his brother has never listened to him before. He seems to have stopped caring for him years ago, while he was still stone and unaware of the change. 

Why does he still always default to Nightmare? 

Why does he hold on?

Now, the fourth lyric:

Honey, it rang and rang

Even the cops thought you were wrong for hanging up

His calls ring and ring and never get picked up. Or more accurately, they get cut off from the other end, being blocked by his brother. It seems he’s finally had enough and cut ties. Permanently. 

Honey, it rang and rang - Calling and calling and calling. Never answering.

(How can brothers abandon one another?)

Even the cops thought you were wrong for hanging up - When nobody answer, he breaks down. He goes back to his friends, beaten and ashamed and guilty and they welcome him back with cautious arms. They comfort him and don’t try and sugarcoat things. They simply hold him until the sobs pass and the sniffles quiet. They saw that yes, he might’ve made some mistakes that will take a bit of mending, but Nightmare should’ve answered.

No grudge is worth this silence, they say. No pain rules this as punishment.

(If anything, this is the moment where grudges should not matter. Where any bad blood between them is put aside. This should be the moment where brother helps brother, and simply that alone.)

Honey, it rang and rang

Even the cops thought you were wrong for hanging up

Dream breaks. His friends pick up the pieces. They are disappointed, not in Dream, but in his brother. Nightmare waits, purposefully ignorant.

And finally, the last lyric:

I dial drunk

I’ll die a drunk

I’d die for you

Without further ado...

I dial drunk - Dream calls without a plan, simply acting on impulse and recklessness. Maybe he’ll luck into this time being the time Nighty sees reason and comes back to him. Maybe this will be the time he answers and at least hears him out and they talk for the first time in a long time without fighting. 

(Nobody answers.)

I’ll die a drunk - With time, comes exhaustion. But Dream cannot stop being who he is. He will die on this hill of being a guardian, a hero, treating his brother like the villain the villagers condemned him to be. So blind, he will not see the drop into a pit he cannot climb out of. He will lay there and he will struggle and bleed and call out, defaulting to a childlike reach like he used to do when thunderstorms roared overhead during the night. 

(Nobody answers.)

I’d die for you - Dream loves his brother so much that he is willing to waste away into nothing to make him come back to him. Unfair it might be, but if that’s what it takes, then he will do it. He just wants to lay under the stars and listen to Nighty tell a story one last time. He just wants things to go back to how it was before the villagers. Before everything. Please.

It was better there, Nightmare. Please come back.

(Nobody answers.)

Dream looks back on himself and mourns and maybe cries and maybe, just maybe, he breaths through it and moves on, letting it rest behind him. And maybe he’ll stop calling for his brother, stop trying to circle thing back to the past. And maybe...

Maybe Nightmare will one day see this progress and decide it’s time to call him back.

The reason why I want to bring this song to your attention is that I was thinking about it earlier and decided it fit; that means, when it fully releases, I will be putting it on my Dreamtale Bros playlist on Spotify. This post is really just to share why, and who I relate this song to the most, Dream or Nightmare.

And the answer might surprise you, depending on who you are.

I relate this song, at least the lyrics we have, to Dream.

I'll go into more detail as to why, analyzing the song and its relation to Dream in my mind, but I'm about to go to bed so I'll leave it for the morning. So, this is really all just a big teaser for what's to come.

Does anyone else hate seeing people conflate game and anime canon despite how much they contradict?

Like, I can make an entire list right here:

*In the show, Wheelie was just one monster (basically this one character named Fang just turned into a monster because rage or something, I dunno, whatever happened to Knuckle Joe-) who gets blown up and presumably dies because he was never seen again after. In the games, it’s an entire species and NOT inherently hostile (honestly a LOT of sometimes-friendly game characters are monsters in the show, and a lot of them DIED in the show so- [Kracko, Paint Roller, Chilly, etc.)

*Kabu in the show was some totem or something where Star Warriors could rest and heal (IDK, whatever Meta Knight said, I forgot-). In the games, they’re just that one random enemy you never pay attention to as you kill them all for attacking you for no reason (oh yeah, they’re also tiny in the games. While there ARE large variants, well... they have different heads than the small ones, while the anime versions were basically oversized small ones [I guess the Kirby Clash games had something like that but those games are canonically their own universe separate from the main games anyway and contradict anime canon even MORE).

*We probably would’ve seen Escargoon outside of that one Mass Attack sub-game cameo if he were actually canon. Like, he would’ve been in Triple Deluxe. Dedede gets Princess-Peached in that game. Seriously-

*Waddle Dees are flat-out unable to speak in the anime while they can speak just fine in the games. Check out the transcript of Revenge of the King, or Kirby Battle Royale, or Revenge of Meta Knight. They talk. The Dees can talk.

*Meta Knight would've had to go backwards in maturity because he just fricking tries to kill Kirby (who’s, like, five) in Revenge of Meta Knight. That and him trying to take over Dream Land and all are just... I could never picture the anime version of him doing that.

*Apparently some official material referred to Cappy Town as anime-exclusive so it literally doesn’t exist in the games (if it did, we would’ve seen it because it was located REALLY close to Castle Dedede)

*According to Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Kirby just “blew into Dream Land on a spring breeze.” That’s his origin story (minus the Void Termina stuff but-). I think that’s a bit far off from CRASHING INTO THE LAND IN A SPACE SHIP.

*Dedede just doesn’t talk the way he does in the anime, and I’m talking about straight up with the Japanese media. Basically, in Japanese, there are multiple pronouns that mean the same thing as I/Me in English, and they can reflect different things. In the anime, he uses わし (”washi”), which is commonly associated with elderly men. In the games (and the light novels too. IDK about the manga ‘cus I haven’t read any of that, though (apart from Epic Yarn where he just talks the way he does in the anime there in generally apparently, though from what I can tell that thing went off the anime quite a bit in other aspects so I’m not surprised. Eh, either way, Epic Yarn is still just one game as compared to multiple others), he uses オレ様 (”oresama”), which is... really just pompous. He also doesn't end sentences with ぞい (”zoi” [an archaic particle used to add mild emphasis... as far as I know, at least), further setting him apart from his anime counterpart.

*Kine in the anime is presumably about Tiff’s age since he had a crush on her or something (IDK, whatever the frick that was)... Kine in the games has a wife (Mine, who appeared in Kirby’s Dream Land 3. She also appeared in the light novel, “Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!”)

*Rick’s girlfriend from the games, Pick, is nowhere to be found in the show.

*The show was basically one big weird advertisement for Nightmare in Dream Land, let’s be honest. Otherwise Nightmare wouldn’t have been an important villain. In the games, he was really just some guy who appeared before the lore really started to kick in. Like, he’s pretty underwhelming and NOT that powerful in the games compared to how he was in the anime.

*Apparently Coo got hit with a Gender Flip (look it up in TV Tropes-) in the Japanese version of the show specifically and no one ever talks about that.

*Cappies in the show don’t wear caps.

*Apparently there was some drama in the show where it was like “Dedede’s family stole the right to rule Dream Land from the Cappies” or whatever but in the games he literally just proclaimed himself king and no one cared. 

*Dedede and Meta Knight are totally gay for each other in the games but there’s now way that’d happen in the show- (ok this is a joke one but frick it I ship Metadede anyway- though, like, they’re at least canonically friends in the game despite Dedede’s greediness. In the show, though, Meta just fricking kicked him down a hill once)

*Why would Lololo and Lalala work for Dedede and try to fight Kirby in the games if they were the same characters as they were in the anime? They were his friends in the anime.

*The Star Rod in the show was some end-level copy ability Kirby got from inhaling the Warp Star. In the games, it’s some probably-artifact powering the Fountain of Dreams, which was absent in the show.

*Pretty much everything I’ve seen implies that Kirby and Dedede first met during the events of the first game.

All those and more are why the anime and games are separate universes and should be treated as such.

Also: It’s funnier to imagine that everyone just had no previous history when this pink gumball showed up and started wrecking them in battle. Like, imagine some random toddler just walking into your room and beating the crap out of you because you committed tax fraud. Imagine that. 

Oh yeah and just imagine the anime and game worlds meeting-

Like, imagine Game-Kirby just going up to Anime-Meta Knight and being like “y’know I beat up your counterpart on a daily basis, right? like that one time he tried to take over Dream Land” and then Anime-Meta just has a stroke or something-

(before anyone says Game Kirby can’t talk either: the official Kirby Drama CD disagrees, and so do the light novels [which at least keep the characters in-character, despite being their own universe. Tbh, the novels are what I wished the anime had been like, and they deserve the amount of attention it’s gotten, or maybe even more... then again I’m a sucker for seeing depressing Kirby sh-)

Sans Needs To Win The 2023 Tumblr Sexyrematch & Here’s Why

You might know him as Sans Undertale. You might know him as the guy who bitchslaps a child to death. You might know him as Bone Daddy. But who is he, really?

To begin this beatdown, let us reference how you began this thread. Quote: “When thinking of a tumblr sexyman we want someone who is an unattractive disaster in many ways but is easy to yassify and slutify. “ Interesting you should say that, because that description fits Sans to a T.

As shown here, he has a simple, but effective design. Yes, his head is shaped like an obese peanut. Yes, he has eye bags despite being a skeleton somehow. Yes, he is wearing slippers despite living in a snowy place/waiting in the judgement hall to beat you to death. Did any of that stop people from wanting to fuck him? No! In fact, the fandom went out of their way to invent whole-ass headcanons about monster sex just in the name of getting boned, despite it being impossible on paper to fuck a skeleton in the traditional way. And it doesn’t stop there! The OG!tumblr sexy man, Onceler, was famous for his fandom’s propensity for cloning and yassifying the character, each with their own spin on him, no? Well, Sans is the king of that. We got regular Sans. We got Underfell Sans. Swaptale Sans. Underswap Sans. Outertale Sans. Horrortale Sans. Dusttale Sans. Error Sans. Fresh Sans. Mafiatale Sans. Dancetale Sans. Dreamtale Sans. Gaster!Sans. Aftertale Sans. Science!Sans. Flowerfell Sans. Inktale Sans. Swapfell Sans. Gaster-Blaster Sans. Reapertale Sans. Those are just the famous AUs, btw, and ship art for them, while less common now, was a fandom staple for eons whether you liked it or not. Sans was so popular he splintered off his original fandom and grew his own bizarre Sans-exclusively-focused one, like a tumour. It was insane. It was creative. It was horrifying. It was sacred. It was TUMBLR. The Sans rabbithole is like an abyss the further into it you get. There are AUs upon AUs upon AUs, yawning out forever. A web, if you will, with this ketchup drinker in dead center.

I ask you this, where is this collective madness for Reigan?

Other fun things about Sans, besides the meta elements, for why he should win:

1) he has depression and hes lazy wow hes just like me fr

2) PSYCHE!!! the reason he’s depressed and lazy is because he’s aware he’s got the potential to be in a timeloop and he has no idea when the world will reset around him, so he struggles putting effort into anything when he’s aware it can be undone on the whim of some otherworldly force he can’t control. Dude is actually probably a scientific genius given what’s in his basement, and yet he spends his days in loose shorts making bad puns and sleeping to keep the existential dread away. Iconic.

3) AND YET he also he also juggles like six jobs or something in the background of the game to pay the bills and keep an eye on the player because even despite all that he still cares about Papyrus and the monsters around him. He’s a damn decent dude!!!

4) He’s genuinely really funny. He uses an actual door to practice knock-knock jokes on. He waits on standby with a trombone to get a rise out of Papyrus. Bad puns out the wazoo. Papyrus makes an awesome snow sculpture of himself, and Sans just gets a snow mound together with his name sprawled on it lazily. He has two passwords in the event he meets a time traveler, one being “i’m a stupid doo-doo butt” and the other being “i’m the legendary fart master”. I’m scratching just the tip of the iceberg here. If you’ve played the game, you just know that if Sans shows up the scene almost always will have something that will make you chuckle. What’s better than a man who can make you laugh? Nothing, that’s what.

5) AND YET Sans can jump from goofy to intimidating as hell on a dime. It comes out very rarely, but that’s what makes the scenes where the light gutters out of his sockets so memorable. “You’d be dead where you stand” is such a memorable line because it completely reshapes everything you thought you knew about the character up to that point. And his performance on the genocide path? Unforgettable. Breathtaking. He is without a shred of mercy for your evil ass. He pulls every underhanded trick he can in the fight. Megalovania became famous for a reason, because it fucking SLAPS. The sheer, barely masked contempt in his dialogue that he delivers with a grin hurts in all the best ways. Get you a man who can do both, indeed.

6) i mentioned it before he LOVES papyrus he loves him so much it makes my heart so full, he actively praises the player for taking Papyrus’s side whenever the brothers debate stupid bullshit, he is furious with the player if they kill him to the point it carries onto other save files (”You want a tip for fighting my brother?” **[eyes go black]** “Don’t.” **[in a flash, he’s warped away]**) I just. Ahhhh!!!! AHHHH!!!

7) “Sans Undertale fucked my mom” is still one of the greatest memes of all time

8) All these years since Undertale’s release, and we still don’t know what he actually is. It’s one of the greatest mysteries of the fandom. He’s a monster -- one made of bones no less -- and yet, he bleeds when you kill him. Sans and Papyrus just seemed to... appear one day. They seem associated with Gaster, but are they, really? What’s all that stuff in Sans’s basement? Where are the gaster-blasters from? How is it that he can teleport? The headcanon fodder is endless. You can jump from interpretation to interpretation and it’ll be a long time before you get bored.

Reigen Arataka is the best candidate, but also has the best motif. When thinking of a tumblr sexyman we want someone who is an unattractive disaster in many ways but is easy to yassify and slutify.

Disclaimer: This is a very lazy breakdown of his character and not meant to be a serious analysis, partially because I am very insane over him and would be putting way too much of my own personal headcanons and fantheories in that no one would want to read and partially because I want to go make lunch soon

In canon Reigen is a conman with a good but somewhat selfish heart and he manipulates children for money, and when his 14 year old student temporarily leaves him he gets depressed and drinks his sorrows away and vomits, except the bartender says something about not even having served him alcohol. He crashes his whole career in a fit of hubris. Certified pathetic man. Sewer rat energy at many points in the story.

His heart is in the right place and he has a redemption! It is very emotionally satisfying and he is willing to die for his student who he previously used and lied for. Ultimate sweetheart, perfect husband material, you want this man to raise your kids but not to file your taxes. Possibly divorce material? Wouldn't key your car I don't think

Gets a nicer and nicer ass as the anime progresses.

Personally, I don't think their Human forms would any effect on Underverse series since the plot was already been completed in advanced. Heck, I don't think that it would have any effect on the existing Dreamtale and Undertale Multiversal Fanstories since those were already been done; though personally, I don't know if Joku consider them all canon or not (considering that Dreamtale is an explanation of the function of the fandom created Multiverse without going into the Meta territory).

Though, If I were to give a suggestion to Joku, I would tell her that she shouldn't worry too much about the canon of the rest of the Undertale Multiverse since it actually doesn't have one in a meta sense; it's varies from one story teller to the next, and to try to take into account of ALL of the Undertale fanstories (along with that of Deltarune) would be a headache in of itself (which is why multiple interpretations of the Multiverse exist). 

What about underverse?are they still using the skeleton body to complete it or...

They are going to remain skeletons until I have everything figured out so this doesn't affect the underverse or anything like that.

Likewise, the story will remain the same ... and in that case they will probably obtain their human body later, I mean that first they will be balls of light, then skeletons and then humans forms ... but I'm still not sure if I'll do it in that order, because I have to think about it ... please stop these types of questions, I do not intend to answer the most

Going on with Dream and Nightmare being spanish. I love the idea that most of the multiverse speaks English so Dream post apple incident had to learn it (and he didn't get 500 years to learn like Nightmare + headcanon that Dream's illiterate)

So i imagine a conversation with him very early on would be quite difficult to hold! Like imagine he meets Ink and Ink's being himself and saying stupid stuff yk yk and Dream's staring in 'is this how you're supposed to speak English' confusion

My favourite head cannon (that I totally didn’t just make up)

is that dream’s a glass child even though they are not children obviously. nightmare gets all of the attention (in the fandom I guess not so much the actual multi verse) and dream gets over looked due to it. Dream often finds himself wishing he was the one who ate the apple or that he was the one who was treated badly back In dreamtale, he’s somehow jealous of nightmares pain. He knows he shouldn’t which makes it worse, he constantly devaluates his own pain/trauma because “nightmare had it worse” that’s always one of his biggest problems, no matter how much he has been hurt there will always be someone who had it worse. which makes him feel like he’s not allowed to feel how he feels. This along with his “I’m the guardian of positivity I need to be happy at all times” thing, it over all makes him bottle up his emotions. He bland himself for everything that happened to nightmare even though deeps down he knows it wasn’t his fault.

He finally snaps and tells nightmare something in an argument and nightmare just sits there and stares at him in silence, physically not able to speak because dream just said what nightmare has thought his entire life.

“Sometimes I wish I could be you.”

Nightmare doesn’t understand why in the slightest all he can get out is

“why.”

Dream wouldn’t be able to elaborate on it at all they would just sit there and stare at each other for the longest time. Both wondering how to escape this.

“I just…it’s just, it’s my fault. I should’ve known. I should’ve helped you, I didn’t help you when you needed me most and now it’s too late.”

“I-“

“I hate myself nightmare, I hate that I didn’t help you. I could have helped you and I didn’t. It’s my fault your like this. It’s my fault.”

canon dream feels empty, and canon nightmare too.

Dream is just a good guy who is naive as hell and infantilized by his own creator

Nightmare is just swept up and canonically dead. like, the purple boy is gone forever all that remains is this pure evil asshole and I hate that with a passion.

how come they can't have a happy ending? most creators leave it so the fans can make different endings so they can be happy, sad, bittersweet, etc. It makes me just a little more feral when I think about how much of a missed opportunity their story is.

my partner ( @digglesgigglesva ) drew a dream design on twitter some time back and i was credited for part of it bc i have some design thoughts on dream human designs :p

specifically everything about being tan! me and diggles collectively agreed "yeah he would be in the sun all the time"

i personally think he'd get tan and maybe get freckles and sun spots :p i think it says a lot about him just through visuals alone!

ofc, nightmare would be the opposite, being pretty pale and dark hair. i feel like dream would have dirty blonde hair but appearing more blonde bc of the sun bleaching it so much i can totally see nightmare being more blushed and rosy cheeked with how pale he is!

but yeah! i don't mind it all that much! i wish there was more symbolism and meaning behind it all, again, and not just some pasty anime guys :p

a lot of dreamtale chapter 1 is good! the concept is fantastic but that's the most of what i enjoy about canon dreamtale and dream. like that's it

fanon dream, on the other hand, have a lot of problems that's similar to fanon papyrus and fanon blue (swap sans) so i don't exactly mind it but i don't enjoy it either

i've always been annoying (apologies to everyone who had to deal with my dreamtale "takes" at age 16. i know some of yall DETEST me because of my terrible "takes" then) about writing my own interpretation of dream and dreamtale LOL

but here's the kicker.

i don't think they're two different characters at all. i think canon dream is the same as fanon dream because i think canon dream was influenced by fanon and totally tainted him forever

if you think papyrus or blue is infantilized, god you are lucky because at least they're not canonly infantilized.

i have gripes with both canon and fanon but they share many traits and the infantilization is definitely one of them.
