okay so when reading the final chapter of svsss volume three, the interactions between yue qingyuan and tianlang-jun are so—

Shen Qingqiu wanted to say something when Tianlang-Jun raised his chin, squinting at Yue Qingyuan. “I remember you.” After thinking for a bit, he said with conviction, “Back then, the Huan Hua Palace’s old geezer wanted you to help him with the ambush, but you ignored him. So you’re the current sect leader of Cang Qiong Mountain? Not bad.” “Your distinguished self’s memory is also quite good.” Tianlang-Jun smiled and smiled, then gave a sigh. “If you were also trapped in a pitch-back darkness for over ten years, unable to glimpse the sky or sun, with nothing to pass the days but for reminiscing over past affairs, your memory would be quite good as well.”

tianlang-jun remembered him, and while yes, it's clear he has a pretty good memory and might also be using it as a way to throw his potential enemy off-balance, it is still a very interesting way to go about it. and the rejoinder yue qingyuan sends back at him, perfectly polite - even respectful! - totally unflappable—tell me you do not see the potential there!!

but never fear, if you are not yet convinced, i have more:

Tianlang-Jun continued to sit upon his stone, completely at ease. “I remember that you also waited until the last moment to draw your sword that day,” he said to Yue Qingyuan. “Doing the same now?” Yue Qingyuan didn’t answer.

tianlang-jun remembered a lot about yue qingyuan, even small details like his sword, and the actions he took (or didn't) upon the day of tianlang-jun's betrayal. to me, this reads as though, even then, he took note of yue qingyuan's power as something to look out for. he is also, despite all of the other people around, primarily engaging in conversation with yue qingyuan.

Tianlang-Jun pulled his hand back and smiled. “Honestly, in the beginning I had no malice, nor did I find fun in the idea of the world burning. I only occasionally crossed the border, coming here to sing songs or read books—it was quite nice. However, since I’ve already been in residence beneath Bai Lu Mountain for so many years, if I don’t follow through on something along the lines of your thoughts, I’d truly find my circumstances a bit too unjustified.” Yue Qingyuan flicked his finger. Xuan Su sprang three inches from its sheath, its spiritual energy seething. The bones of Tianlang-Jun’s body cracked and popped, almost like his joints had been dislocated. He made a sound of surprise. “As expected of a sect leader. Not bad. Your master was quite mediocre but had quite the eye for disciples and successors.”

okay first of all, the tension here is remarkable, and second of all, the compliment at the end—tianlang-jun, for the power level we know he possesses, is being practically effusive with his praise of yue qingyuan's strength something we know to be greatly prized by demons.

this segment follows the previous directly, but i had to give it it's own spotlight, for reasons that i hope will be readily apparent:

Then Tianlang-Jun reached out and grabbed Xuan Su’s blade directly, as if he couldn���t feel a thing. “But why not draw it all the way?” he said with a smile. “You can’t do anything to me with only this much.” Yue Qingyuan’s gaze hardened, and Xuan Su jumped another half-inch from its sheath.

tianlang-jun: oho, you'll need more than that much to handle me, big guy

(jokes aside, considering the rampant spiritual energy of xuan su, described as so powerful as to be oppressive in volume 2, and the susceptibility of demons to spiritual energy, tianlang-jun is truly doing the absolute Most™ right now.)

... moving decidedly away from jokes now, this is one of the most pivotal lines for them, in my opinion. it comes at the conclusion of wu chen's reveal of the betrayal-that-wasn't, and how su xiyan chose death over bringing harm to tianlang-jun, only for it to find him regardless:

“It wasn’t that she didn’t care about you, but that she was without alternative. Yet the world is pitiless, and so you passed each other by…” Tianlang-Jun’s lips seemed to tremble slightly. A long moment passed. Then he said, “Is that so?” Right after those three words, he asked again, “Truly?” “This one swears upon his life that his words contain not a single falsehood,” said Master Wu Chen. Tianlang-Jun turned his head to look at Shen Qingqiu and Yue Qingyuan. As if seeking confirmation, he asked, “Truly?” He didn’t even care whether someone was in the know; he was just asking anyone he could. Unable to say anything, Yue Qingyuan silently lowered his head. It was unclear what he thought.

it is clear that the tragedy of su xiyan and tianlang-jun was one that yue qingyuan felt keenly, not only for his response here, clearly processing some significant emotion, but also for the way that he used the same words to describe his relationship with shen jiu just a short time later:

“I really…didn’t mean to not return,” said Yue Qingyuan. “Only, it really is true that the world is pitiless, and so the two of us passed each other by…”

pardon me while a cry a new freshwater body into existence.

there is truly so much more that can be said about what makes these two a great fit for each other, especially in a canon-adjacent/post-canon scenario, but i'll save that for another day. for now, i will let these excerpts speak for themselves.

Alright not to like liveblog my breakdown on main but yesterday was a really bad day after a really bad, like, 4 months, and I've hit a bit of a breaking point and one of the only things in my life that can give is running @mdzsartreblogs , @tgcfartreblogs , @svsssartreblogs , @erhaartreblogs , @tykartreblogs , and @cnovelartreblogs , so that is what has to give. It's been a 99-out-of-100 days thankless job. A small number of people do say thank you and yall I appreciate you so much (HUGE shout-out to the artist I met at Flamecon who gifted me a zine when I said I ran these blogs, @bonesblubs you rock) but I have never done an act of fandom labor simultaneously this labor intensive yet this invisible before and, uh. It sucks. I spend an hour or more a day on this every day, if it's under 2k hours since I started the first of these in September 2020 I'd be shocked. And I do it because I love it but doing it means I don't have time or energy to do other things I love. And I really don't want to just quit, but I can't keep this up.

In a last-ditch effort to try not to just give up, I'm making the following changes:

1. Only watching one tag per fandom for the MXTX fandoms. I am going to check *only* #tgcf, #svsss, and #mdzs. Artwork posted to any other tag, I will not see unless a mutual reblogs it.

2. Reduced tagging (even more). I'm only going to tag characters and maybe overarching au type (eg, "modern au," "fantasy au"). I'll no longer tag creatures. I will continue to tag the same common trigger warnings I already tag.

3. If a work's appearance doesn't make it obvious what it is AND the tags aren't clear, I'm not going to reblog. I can't keep spending 5 minutes or more trying to figure out what I'm even looking at, scared that if I guess wrong the artist will get mad at me for mistagging their work. If I do reblog, I'll tag only the artist name and/or whatever else I can identify for sure.

4. I am no longer going to follow #link click. The fandom is just too big. I've started dreading checking it. If I was more into it and less busy I would make another spin off just for it but neither of those is true. (The art is so good, I hate to do this, but. If you love link click, highly recommend the main tag, lots of great stuff there.)

5. I will no longer tag any non-cnovel content in the art/post. Like, if someone draws, idek, Xie Lian and Marinette from Ladybug, I'm not gonna put any tags for Marinette, just for Xie Lian.

6. Basically if I run into something hard to tag or confusing or unclear, my new policy is I'm not gonna fricken bother.

I think those are everything but idefk, I cried for 3 hours last night and got 4 hours of sleep so I'm mostly fueled by exhaustion and desperation right now and my memory is even more fried than usual.

How artists can help. This is obviously all optional. You do you. But since some people might want to know what would make my life easier, I'm sharing. I'm not claiming I feel entitled to dictate how people fandom or anything like that.

1. Put the tags for the character(s) and ship(s) early in the tag list.

2. If you make art for a fandom that isn't one of the big ones (right now the only big danmei fandoms on tumblr as far as I can tell are the MXTX fandoms and maybe 2ha) I am begging you to use my tracked tag #cnovelartreblogs

3. Do mdzs art? Tag #mdzs. Do tgcf art? Tag #tgcf. Do svsss art? Tag #svsss.

4. Not only artists, but everyone, *please* stop tagging fandoms not discussed and/or depicted in your post. It's gotten to be stupid common for people to blanket the danmei fandom tags with posts only about one fandon (like, svsss-only works also being tagged mdzs and tgcf and 2ha for some damn reason). This isn't about just my sideblogs tbh this is just fandom etiquette that seems to have been forgotten or never learned by many. Tagging unrelated fandoms isn't "reach," it's annoying. People go into the #mdzs tag to see mdzs, not whatever not-mdzs stuff people have decided to tag for ~reach~, and seeing the same post in 8 tags, none of which it's related to, is so damn irritating, and makes scrolling the tags looking for content that IS relevant take that much longer. Knock it off.

Okay. I think that's as much as I'm prepared to meltdown where everyone can see. Thanks in advance everyone for your understanding, and apologies to everyone about to see this 8 times as I reblog it to each sideblog.

At least I'm not tagging it to everywhere. 🤣🤣🤣

If there was one thing the original goods could do well, it was painting.

He was, of course, also well-versed in subterfuge, angry hatred, and attracting 'scheming bastard!' flags left and right. And in making the Sect Leader look like a kicked dog. And in raising everybody's blood pressure. And in avoiding any shred of human kindness. And in—

Anyway. He was good in many things that currently don't serve Shen Qingqiu well, but at least his muscles remembering the movements and amount of pressure to put on a paintbrush for quality paintwork is quite neat!

In his past life, Shen Yuan couldn't draw for shit. His only genuine attempt at an illustration for his then-5-year-old sister's favourite fairy tale was met with frightened sobbing and countless nights spent sharing his bed with her whenever she woke up from yet another nightmare induced by his terrible scribbles. (In his defense, the monster terrorising the town was the coolest thing in that story.)

Having his disciples ohh and ahh at the simple scrolls he paints is quite the difference from terrified tears. If you ask him, he quite enjoys it! The best thing about being able to draw well, though, is getting to finally draw his own fanart—

"What's Shizun painting?"

—away from where anybody can see!

He very gracefully slams his hand over the scroll, completely intentionally smudging the dash of diluted red ink he's just applied to the smiling lips of the pained Luo Binghe as his husband looks over his shoulder. He hasn't even heard him come in!

"Is that...?"

"No," Shen Qingqiu says immediately and for a good measure flips the page over. The small bowl with red ink topples over and spills.

Binghe's breath hitches next to his ear.

Despite being the Peak Lord of the Qing Jing Peak, or maybe exactly because of it, Shen Qingqiu has always been aware that scroll paper is a finite resource and shouldn't be wasted. That's why when he draws in private he uses up every blank spot. The other side of the painting is filled with countless sketches of Luo Binghe in various poses and states of undress. Sleeping. Cooking. Fighting. Commanding. With a laugh on his lips, or tears in his eyes, or suggestive tension rising in the arch of his eyebrows.

"Shizun..."

Shen Qingqiu slowly reaches for his fan, unfolds it, and presses his entire face against it.

Binghe lays his gentle hands on Shen Qingqiu's tense shoulders and presses his forehead against his temple.

"Is this how Husband sees me?"

Any answer would be damning! No, this husband does not see Luo Binghe, the man above all men, as a mess of rough, imperfect, rushed lines! Yes, he does look close enough to commit every minor detail to memory! Anybody would!

For some reason, that final thought settles heavily in his stomach. He turns his head slightly, so his forehead rests against Binghe's.

"Mn."

"Does he, really?" There's a teasing edge in Luo Binghe's voice and Shen Qingqiu knows, even with his eyes closed, that the look on his face must be truly ungodly. "Husband should look whenever he likes."

"...Mn."

"He should open his eyes and look now, too."

Not a chance! Shen Qingqiu does the only thing that ever truly distracts the tempting husband of his: he leans in and steals his lips in a kiss, and holds them captive until they yield in sweet surprised surrender.

The scroll paper gets torn, the fan forgotten aside, and both of them end up with red-ink fingerprints all over their skin.

Read a take where they think that YQY didn't love OG SQQ????? Ummm....WHAT?! Even if you don't read the extras and ONLY the main story, you still obviously see that YQY LOVED SQQ THE MOST!!!!!!! It was already very, VERY OBVIOUS when YQY would not hesitate even 0.00000001 microsecond to choose violence, and even ready to start a sect war to protect SQQ (granted it was SY by that point but YQY didn't know that. And he DID want SQQ to have his memories back, THE ONLY FUCKING PERSON IN ALL OF CQMS BTW who wanted him to have his memories back). And after the final climax arc (pun very much intended), the fact that every time he unsheathes Xuan Su meant draining his lifeforce away but he still always would draw his sword even at the hint of a threat towards SQQ?? That he readily accepted and forgave LBH for his madness coz SQQ loved LBH? All that meant nothing or what?? LBH probably even indirectly saved YQY's life by stealing SQQ's body coz I do FEEL like YQY would've killed himself and was only waiting until he gave proper funeral rites for SQQ.

YQY would happily destroy himself for SQQ. He did destroy himself for SQQ. He will do it a thousand times over.

It bothers me that he didn't realise his SJ was replaced but even that came from a place of self-sacrifice. He thought it was all for the better for SQQ if it meant forgetting his Qi-ge helped him to live a better life. He ACCEPTED THAT SQQ WITHOUT HIS MEMORIES OF YQY LIVED BETTER. HE ACCEPTED THAT!!! AND HE STILL PROTECTED THIS VERSION OF SQQ AT THE COST OF HIS LIFE!!!!

Ahh....SVSSS YQY...if you only knew that your Xiao Jiu is gone forever...

Thinking more about Yue Qingyuan and Tianlang-jun’s accidental cross-country roadtrip back to Cang Qiong. Since this is an SVSSS AU, let’s add a few hindrances to stretch it out into a nice long bonding exercise, shall we?

Hmmm... well, Tianlang-jun’s easy - he has to be super careful about how much power he uses, less he destroy his current body with demonic qi and be forced back into his usual body before it’s fully healed (which is taking a decent amount of time since it was, you know. Pixelation levels of messed up), so he’s being very, very careful not to do anything to compromise his current physical freedom.

And Yue Qingyuan... let’s say he had some sort of cursed item suppressing his qi when they were stuck in a room together, and he managed to force it off but it also disrupted the seal keeping his life force in the Xuan Su sword, so it’s leaking some now. The crack is currently pretty small, so the leak is minor, but any significant use of qi makes it bigger and the flow larger, so he has to be very, very careful how much he does. Circulating his qi, cleaning meridians, and smaller stuff is about all he’s good for cultivation-wise at the moment. Drawing his sword in this condition might actually kill him.

Tianlang-jun is not happy to hear that Yue Qingyuan’s got some weird cultivator sickness going on (before he learns The Truth(tm) ), and is fully expecting this rich young master to have no idea how to rough it. Thus it’s something of a shock to discover, hey, actually YQY’s better at it than he is. Tianlang-jun’s needed for his know-how about the demonic realm’s flora and fauna, and his plant body is still currently stronger, but YQY seriously knows how to make camp, find kindling, cook basic meals, heck, even how to start a fire without qi! And (and this is the scary part) he’s not even complaining about it! Why is the big, fancy, powerful sect leader not flinching about getting his pretty robes and pretty hair and expensive everything all messed up and having to rough it, huh?!?

Meanwhile Yue Qingyuan’s hardcore Shook because I think it would be fair to say that this is the first time he’s well and truly lost it since the Lingxi Caverns, because he has been Very Very Careful, and he’s just having A Day Of It. Setting up and camp and having to worry about food for once is almost a relief, because the memories it brings back are bad, but at least they’re familiar, so he’s clinging to that with both hands at the moment. Time to tie back sleeves, put away the hair crown, and put up his hair in a more sensible style. Also, to talk Tianlang-jun into letting Yue Qingyuan clear his meridians for him, he’s not having a guest of the sect drop dead on him just because they got kidnapped and traumatized and left on the run in the demon realm. They’re near the border, anyway, it’s fine.

(Yue Qingyuan has been looking himself in the mirror every day for at least forty years and going, ‘this is fine,’ like heck he’s going to stop now.)

Also they actually do have some supplies, because, brand-new headcanon that I just grew, Yue Qingyuan generally carries a qiankun pouch on him with some survival basics in it. Whenever he’s asked about it by other sect members, he just brushes it off with something along the lines of, “A good leader is always prepared,” but the real reason is to assuage the fears that growing up on the streets and in slavery leaves you with. Sect Leader Yue is a responsible grown-up who does not run away from his problems, but he’s ready to at a moment’s notice if necessary.

It’s not enough supplies for a situation like this, but it’s a start. They have fire-starting tools, some money, some food, too many knives, a few lengths of rope, a couple sets of more sensible clothes.

Tianlang-jun: ...why do you have so many knives?

Yue Qingyuan: They’re useful. You never know when you might need a knife for something.

Tianlang-jun: I mean, yeah, but this feels... excessive?

Yue Qingyuan: Junshang must be in a better mood, to be able to joke so. :)

Tianlang-jun: (stop being interesting and making me want to figure out your secrets, I don’t like you, I just want to fix you up a bit so I can bully you for helping stick me under a mountain, stop looking handsome in normal-person clothes-!!!!)

Yue Qingyuan: (reorganizing their inventory and carefully not paying attention to the fact that Tianlang-jun is wearing some of his clothes and looking kind of really good in them)

(Because confused, distrustful, confrontational, and thirsty is the SVSSS way! Also, I am fully prepared to peel back every layer of disguise Yue Qingyuan has created to reveal the scared, desperate street kid that’s still inside him, I don’t think I’ve ever really seen that done and I’ve suddenly discovered that it’s something I really want. If you can’t find the terrified child inside of you, how are you ever supposed to tell them they’re not alone anymore and you’re able to keep you both safe now?)
