The week between Christmas and New Year’s passes in a blur of practices, rain and two more games. One home game against another crowd favourite; Leksand IF (which Draco and his team won four against zero). And then one away game against the tricky IK Oskarshamn (which they also won, six-three).  By the time midnight strikes and the new year begins, Draco is feeling more than confident about what the new journey around the sun will entail. In fact, he’s feeling exhilarated, and perhaps a little arrogant. Not only has his team won all three games Draco has played with them this far, but he can also revel in the fact that Luleå have lost their last two games. Earlier today he even indulged himself, sending a better luck next time message to Potter.  To his surprise, Potter called back almost immediately only to curse at Draco, loudly and at length, before hanging up again. It put a smile on Draco’s face that still decorates his face while he watches the fireworks exploding in the sky outside.

I'm patting myself on the shoulder, telling myself "Well done, you" because this has been a difficult journey. But I did it.

In my planning doc for this fic, I've previously written two messages to @sleepstxtic, who prompted a sports rivalry to this year's edition of @lcdrarry. Those messages are as follows:

Hullo there, Kat. It’s me. One of your many, many fans.  I won’t lie. It took a lot of courage for me to sign up for this prompt. Remembering what you wrote last year for bodiceripper, recalling the tension and emotions you created with your words. How can I ever live up to that? Truth is, I can’t. I can only try. And I knew, when I saw the prompt, that the only thing I could do to make the prompt justice, would be to call your obsession with tennis, and raise you my own: I had to write an AU about the one sport I’m completely engrossed in myself. Ice hockey.  I guess I’ve been looking for an excuse to write a hockey AU for quite some time already, and you finally gave it to me. And I guess that’s why I finally steeled my nerves, took a deep breath and plunged into the scary waters of writing for you. I signed up…

I have a question for you, Kat. Do you even understand what a struggle it was for me to write about something that made me so excited I couldn’t get my hands to stop shaking? That I couldn’t sit still enough to actually write for? That constantly made me sidetrack and focus on the actual ongoing ice hockey season in Sweden? Would you like to see my notes of planning for this fic and read about all my meltdowns over what happened during games I watched and whatnot? I guess it’s a journey of its own to read all of that. It's not that strange that I was so excited. Drarry? And ice hockey? AND FÄRJESTAD BK?! Together?!?! My brain literally melted.

As time flew by, my excitement for this prompt wasn't the only thing that made it difficult for me to write this fic, though. I was scared to write something subpar to what you deserved. To what my beloved FBK deserved. I was afraid that what I wrote wasn't worth reading. But I kept writing, slowly.

Real life knocked on my door. Uni studies and whatnot. Suddenly I had like five extensions past me and time was up. The fest was due to be over in only a couple of days.

I saw the end, I could see the horizon of the story. I was almost done. So little left, but it felt like so much.

I did it. At last, I did it. I finished it. On time!

(or, at least, in time before the fest was over... on time would've meant i finished it much earlier...)

🔸 Terminal Lucidity by @romaine2424 (Drarry, HD Career Fair, rated G, 3K) This bittersweet fic has Harry putting his abilities as Master of Death to good use by comforting those close to death themselves. We see him at work here, adeptly easing the way for someone dear to him with compassion and care. I found this story incredibly moving and a beautiful portrait of family ties in the face of an impending loss. Featuring older, established Drarry and the Black-Malfoy family.

🔹 Our Objective Remains Unchanged by @citrusses (Drarry, rated E, 46K) Gorgeously and vividly written, this university rowing AU drew me in right from the get-go, despite the fact that Muggle AUs are not my typical cuppa. The enemies-to-lovers tension is perfectly paced as Harry and Draco fight for the same spot on the Oxford team. Citrusses did a fantastic job translating their backgrounds and personalities (as well as those of other familiar characters from the books) into this world. Class divisions and the pressure of a highly-public sporting event stand in very effectively for Harry’s canon experiences. All in all, the story has the poignancy and drama of a lush coming of age film, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

🔸 The Pile by @b-vul (Drarry, not rated, about 1.5K) This hilarious ficlet was born out of littlewinnow’s tumblr post about Veela!Harry performing an intricate mating dance to impress Draco. Delightfully, it’s from Harry’s POV as he blindly “trusts his instincts” to guide him into increasingly bizarre actions. And the evolution of Draco’s reaction is pure comedy gold. I’ve come back to reread this one a couple of times, and it never fails to have me in stitches. (The tumblr thread also contains adorable art by regretfulcorrine!)

🔹 Shine on, You Crazy Diamond by @lagerloutfic (Drarry, HD Mpreg Fest, rated E, 42K) This is one of those fics that you can’t stop reading once you start (something I confirmed this morning when I went to skim through it for this rec and wound up spending a few happy hours devouring the entire thing again). It’s laugh-out-loud funny and deliciously smutty, with a full cast of delightful side characters and just the right amount of feelings. The story begins with the discovery of Draco’s surprise pregnancy, then switches to a long flashback of Harry’s gay awakening and his fast sexual/slow emotional burn relationship with Draco. The entire fic has a joyful feel—banter-filled pub nights, chaotic family dinners, audacious curse breaking—culminating in the baby’s arrival, which left me in happy tears and wishing for another 40K of this fabulous story. Featuring confident Harry, supportive friends & family, hot Charlie, and some shamelessly kinky Unspeakables.

🔸 Silhouettes by @sweet-s0rr0w (Draco/Ron/Harry, Dronarry Fest, rated E, 16K) Draco/Ron/Harry is not a ship I’d ventured into before I read this fic, but I’m so glad I did! Sweet’s writing always hits the right spot in my brain, and her alternating POVs and spot-on characterizations of all three boys are delightful. I especially loved Ron’s sexy self-assurance here. The unique magical theory around sentient houses is fascinating and ultimately poignant, once Draco gets to the root cause of the Burrow’s behavior. Sweet-sorrow surely lived up to her username with this one, weaving grief with humor and a heartwarming resolution.

🔹 Harry Potter Gets a Job (A 106-Page Comic) by dustmouth (Drarry, HD Career Fair, rated M) Dustmouth’s comics never miss, I swear! In this one, we find Harry overcoming his distrust of Draco with the help of the Weasleys, especially Ron (who is definitely up to something himself). All of my favorite Dustmouth elements are here: the expressive characters, Draco’s wild wardrobe choices, and punchy dialogue galore. Also featuring drunken shenanigans at the Burrow, adorable Teddy, and some first-class Slytherin-ing by Draco to win his man (and find Harry that job). What a treat!

🔸 the earth from a distance by spqr (Drarry, rated E, 15K) A whirlwind time-travel fic with breezy humor, bedsharing, and spqr’s unmatched smut with feelings… What more could you ask for in a fic? Oh, yeah: fantastic worldbuilding for Hogwarts in 1599, brilliantly clever Draco, and a dash of enemies to lovers. I can never get enough of this author!

🔹 A Year In The Life by @ladderofyears (Drarry, HD Career Fair, rated M, 19K) I swear, the author conjured a little bit of magic to write this story. It’s told entirely with 50-word microfics, one journal entry for each day of 2006 (an impressive feat, by itself!), and yet it reads just as smoothly as any traditional fic. Draco’s voice is perfect here, full of wit and subtle emotion, as his and Harry’s developing romance takes a sharp turn with an unexpected pregnancy.  Draco’s anticipation, worry, and joy are mixed with deftly-chosen details of his daily life, all captured with Emma’s trademark tenderness and warmth. This fic is a perfect comfort read for family feels and gentle romance.

🔸 try to fix you by @maesterchill (Harry/Ron/Hermione, HP Snooze Fest, rated M, 2K) A beautifully and tenderly written hurt/comfort fic set in the aftermath of the Battle of Hogwarts. Ron is the glue that holds the trio together here, caring for Harry and Hermione with gentle devotion. There’s no dialogue needed to tell this story, just Ron’s perceptive POV that captures the grief and love that compel him. I have a soft spot for this triad forming immediately after the war, as a way of holding onto each other and holding themselves together. Maester’s fic makes their transition from friends to lovers feel like the first step towards healing.

🔹 The Scent of Soft Rains by @dodgerkedavra (Drarry, HD Career Fair, rated E, 20K) When Harry is left housebound and isolated by a traumatic injury, magical prosthetist Draco gets called into help. But Harry’s struggles go far beyond the physical ones. This recovery fic combines magical and non-magical therapeutic treatments in a way I can’t remember reading before. The hurt/comfort is just as it should be—both heart-wrenching and soothing—but there are enough surprising revelations to keep the story from feeling predictable. Draco is wonderfully unflinching and patient, and the ending left me crying happy tears. With lovely, restrained prose and vivid magical imagery, this one’s an absolute stunner.

🔸 Connecting Lines, Connecting Crimes by @sleepstxtic (Drarry, H/D Career Fair, rated M, 15K) With its intriguing careers, fascinating magical theory, and well-researched worldbuilding, this story captured my attention immediately, and the mystery at the heart of it kept me engrossed. This was one of the more thought-provoking fics I’ve had the pleasure of reading, exploring the intersection of magic, the environment, and colonialism. Harry’s first-person POV is lovely, and it feels like we’re learning to love India and the people he meets along with him. The getting-back-together romance is gentle but satisfying, propelled by pent-up yearning that’s palpable. There’s so much to enjoy here, all in only 15K words!

🔹 Waking Up Slow by @sweet-s0rr0w and @ihopeyoubothstaysafefromharm (Drarry, H/D Wireless Fest, rated E, 22K) The first word that comes to mind while reading this fic is charming. First there’s the novel setting: a Christmas shop in the tourist destination of Cheddar Gorge, in the middle of a July heatwave. Next, there’s the shop itself, so imaginatively described and full to the brim with clever Muggle and magical details. Then there are the delightful OCs, Draco’s seemingly unhinged enthusiasm for all things Christmas (including ridiculous jumpers), and Harry’s complete disregard for professional behavior. But underneath the playful banter and humor, there’s also a layer of poignancy to tug at the heartstrings, especially when we find out the backstories behind Harry’s and Draco’s unlikely careers. And to top it all off, like the glowing star on the tree, are Joy’s exuberant, colorful illustrations. This is a Christmas-y fic I’d reread any time of the year.

How I feel about this character

Who wouldn't love his utter fanatical devotion to winning school sports games that ultimately don't actually affect that much? They only thing Harry ever got that enthusiastic about was Draco Malfoy. If Harry had been that into Horcrux hunting the main plot of book 7 would've been over by chapter 5 and the rest could've been devoted to the 8th year drarry fic of our dreams. Remember the time Harry almost died in a Quidditch game and Oliver tried to drown himself in the showers...because they lost?

Hilarious and iconic. I feel like this video captures him perfectly lolol.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

I...don't really. In my head Oliver's true love is Quidditch lol. Although I would be deeply entertained by a fake dating AU in which he seduces Marcus Flint to try to learn about the Slytherin team's strategy for the Quidditch season and then it's left ambiguous in the end whether they've actually caught feelings for each other or have expanded their Qudditch rivalry to new levels... (25 years into their marriage all their friends and acquaintances are still not sure and also are not entirely convinced they aren't actually doing a Bit but are too afraid to ask).

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I just think it would be so funny to know more about the absolute chaos that must have ensued from him sharing a dormitory with Percy. Just imagine Percy insisting on total peace and quiet while he studies vs Wood up at all hours making Quidditch models. I feel like they'd either get along really well by terrifying everyone else into giving them the space to themselves to work on their respective Very Important Projects TM or else they'd constantly be fighting. Or maybe they alternated. Either way. Peak content potential.

I don't think I have any. Comment your spiciest Oliver Wood takes lol.

13) what school clubs would this character be/been in?

Honestly, my first pick for Draco was theatre or art club because the version I have of him in my head has that fan-made personality most of us agree on. But if we’re talking about canon Draco, he’d probably be more into sports.

Canon Draco strikes me as super creative, even in the way he insults people. Plus, he’s an attention-seeking, dramatic diva (lmao). Fanon usually takes these traits and exaggerates them in a positive way which is why I thought Draco would channel his creativity into something like an art club if this were a muggle high school AU. It’s also why I thought he might be drawn to performing on stage or something like that.

That said, canon Draco would definitely be that kid who bullies anyone with “nerdy” interests, even if they’re not actually nerdy. He’d totally use stereotypes to tear people down, saying stuff like “art kids are just autistic” or “theatre people don’t shower” (those were pretty common at my school).

But I don’t see Draco as the typical jock who plays rugby and is all muscles like in American movies. Nah, Draco would bully those guys too for being all “no brain, just brawn.” He’d be more into the “sophisticated,” rich-kid sports like horseback riding, figure skating or gymnastics.

And since this account is all about promoting Drarry propaganda, I’ll just add that rugby player Harry definitely overheard Draco’s insults and decided to teach him a lesson in the bedroom, leaving Draco limping the next day 👀

I loved reading your answers, which is what made me finally decide to do this one. I'm really awful at these, and I'm stuck in that endless blank early period of motherhood where my focus is so inwards, so survivalist, that I've lost all sense of popular songs/films/sport, which is a big part of why I don't generally do other 'about you' type posts. 5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Embarrassingly enough, not usually. Basically, I got very overwhelmed last summer after writing Kept in Cages, because I pushed myself ridiculously hard to get it finished in time for Wireless (last fic in Wireless, but I made it!!) Combined with a lot of stress in my personal life, I then experienced massive burnout and had six months of complete writer’s block. Meanwhile, I got some really wonderful, brilliant, thoughtful comments on that fic, and I felt just awful and like a total fraud who couldn’t put a sentence together, and couldn’t bring myself to even respond. And now I don’t feel like I can reply to anything more recent until I’ve got through the old comments, etc etc. I guess I should just get over myself and crack on though, because I love getting comments and do really truly read and appreciate every single one.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I tend to give them at the very least a hopeful ending, so I had to look through my account to work this out, and I think this has to go to my weird tiny little dark fic Not Waving (M, 3k, Drarry).

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

As above, I do like a happy ending, but rarely is it unqualified happiness. Kept in Cages, maybe, because I like that they’ve built a life away from everything, and that it’s something that they’ve each freely chosen. Or perhaps Silhouettes (E, 17k, Dronarry), which now I think about it does have a rare conveniently-packaged ending!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet! The odd lightly offensive bookmark rating, but nothing that especially bothers me. I got caught up in the top/bottom trolling early in my time in fandom, but that stuff was so ridiculous I just deleted the lot of it and didn’t think of it again.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I write what I want to read, really, which (naturally) involves smut. I can’t do PWPs though; there’s a Tumblr post that says, like, ‘I’m going to write a quick PWP, the starting premise is that character A has lost their faith in god’, and this is kind of me. Sex in fic for me is a big part of relationship development, and so I usually slot in whatever works best for the characters from that point of view. I’m actually writing something right now that’s fast sexual burn/slow relationship burn, and it’s a very new dynamic for me, to try and take the feelings away (a bit, obviously they’re going to catch them sooner or later).

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I don’t really enjoy reading them, so it doesn’t really enter my mind to try and write one. I suppose sports AUs are the exception to the rule – does that count? I haven’t written one, but I’ve read some I’ve adored (@sleepstxtic, @citrusses) and I could see myself having a go.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

A couple, I think. Someone translated NATG to Brazilian Portuguese, all 111k of the thing (although looking now I think it might have been taken down!), and Nice I think got translated to Vietnamese.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, Dreaming Skies with @tackytigerfic. Dream come true, etc etc. I have to say, I’d absolutely be up for another collab with someone in the future (time/life/etc allowing, which is a big if for me).

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

Drarry. Twenty-one years and counting!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Oh, I’d never say never! Good to always have something on the backburner, I say.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue, I think. And I used to think pacing, but currently having a slight crisis about this in my latest fic, so get back to me! But yeah, dialogue; as I was saying to @fluxweeed the other day, sometimes I feel like I write my fics by just filling in the gaps between dialogue.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Everything that’s not dialogue! No, I’d say probably endings. I don’t think I’ve mastered the art of ending strong just yet. I’m too keen to satisfy readers, possibly, or maybe it’s the dialogue thing again, I want to end on a quip or something, and it never sits quite right. I should really start looking at what I think makes a good ending, I guess.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Fine? I mean, I wouldn’t personally do it using google translate or anything, because I’d have horrors that I’d accidentally end up insulting someone, but if I know the language a bit and/or have someone I can trust to help, that’s fine.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

First and only, HP. I read HP back in the early 00s – a broad range of stuff, following the well-known authors (Cassie Clare, Maya, Rhysenn, Aja etc), but was always just a lurker, never part of fandom (was too nervous, and too busy with F1, which was a very niche fandom back then, consisting of about 30 of us and an unhealthy number of screenshots of Jarno Trulli’s backside after every race – I ran a fic archive and modded fests etc, but never wrote). Then when I got back into fandom, it was immediately HP, and immediately Drarry <3

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Don’t make me choose between my children!

I found it fascinating to delve into the character of someone who is only described in canon by her relation to others (wife to Draco Malfoy, sister to Daphne Greengrass etc). So I gave her a personality of my own and she has come to mean very much to me. And! It has the most gorgeous art to go with it drawn by the lovely @ladderofyears which you can find here!

The Pirc Defence [E, 10k]: One of my earlier forays into writing, this one is a Muggle Chess! AU featuring Harry and Draco as Chess Grandmasters loosely inspired by The Queen's Gambit on Netflix for LCDrarry. The narrative here is non-linear; I couldn't figure out the story in a straight line so I wrote it in bits and pieces and then put it all together (ha).

The first non-Drarry fic on this list, it's another tribute to how much I love rivalries in sport, even in the magical world. This one is part-epistolary and part-narrative, inspired by and written for @yourtokentrophywife who writes the most spectacular Flintwood.

Day Two: Our Objective Remains Unchanged by @citrusses (Drarry, rated E, 46K)

Summary: Harry Potter, returning member of the Oxford University Boat Club, has two goals for the spring of 2005: beat Cambridge, and beat Draco Malfoy. Perhaps not in that order.

Gorgeously and vividly written, this university rowing AU drew me in right from the get-go, despite the fact that Muggle AUs are not my typical cuppa. The enemies-to-lovers tension is perfectly paced as Harry and Draco fight for the same spot on the Oxford team. Citrusses did a fantastic job translating their backgrounds and personalities (as well as those of other characters from the books) into this world. Class divisions and the pressure of a highly-public sporting event stand in very effectively for Harry’s canon experiences. All in all, the story has the poignancy and drama of a lush coming of age film, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
