The incomparable @tackytigerfic has started a first lines game and I thought, why not? Find their incredible first lines here

I'll Be Loving You (359 words, hurt/comfort, established relationship). Harry found him on the porch, his knuckles white where he gripped the railing. 

Mads (441 words, slice of life, established relationship) Harry shut the door behind him, wrestling himself out of his coat whilst trying not to jostle the box in his arms. 

The Love You Find (13.6K, ex-auror partners, roadtrip, getting together) Harry gaped at his partner, unable — or unwilling — to believe that he had heard correctly.

Like This, My Beloved (996 words, pure fluff, established relationship, 1st person POV) I didn’t think I would see you again, after the war.

My Heart Was Unprepared (2.5k, epistolary, kind of, 8th year) 1st September 1998.

All The Time In The World (7k, trans male Harry, coming out, getting together, best boyfriend Draco) Harry gripped the edge of the sink, his knuckles white in his attempts to keep himself grounded.

Still Into You (289 words, established relationship, salt and pepper drarry) They told me that it would fade, this feeling.

Always In My Heart (2.9k, Narcissa-centric, AU in which Lily and Petunia are actually Blacks) Narcissa sat at the Slytherin table, watching intensely as the year's first-year students filed into the Great Hall.

The Strings That Weave Us (1.9k, getting together with the aid of some magical thread and a family tapestry, pink haired Draco) It was all Andromeda’s fault.

With You Between My Arms (2.1k, slice of life, drarry through dances they share, songfic) For reasons known only to herself, McGonagall had decided that a graduation ball was a great idea, as if this class hadn’t been through enough.

Apparently I don't have any pattern at all with first lines - in fact the only pattern here is that almost all of these were written for someone specific. I think my favourite is from Strings, because it makes me laugh. Poor Andromeda.

It starts with the steady rhythm of tires on the asphalt, the shuddering of the glass in their frames. The radio plays distantly in the background - something slow and sad, crackling with interference. Harry liked rap, twisted words and heavy bass, so different from the low voices and crooning songs Draco preferred. It somehow combined into this; a mix of electronic melodies and crooning vocals, a song none of them particularly liked but listened to anyway. The sun blurs in the distance, blue and red and gold, heat shimmering in the distance.

“Air-con?” Harry’s voice is rough, almost jolting in the near silence of the car. Time moves like syrup around Draco’s tongue, the slow stretch of an afternoon fading into evening, a day that never seemed to end. He swallows against the dryness in his throat.

“I’m good,” he says. The air-con never worked anyway, only scorching heat from plastic vents. The sky melts into shades of orange all around him. Draco props his hand on the window, twists his feet so they’re positioned under his legs. “Sprite?”

The bottle is practically empty, a small pool of liquid where he tilted the plastic towards Harry. They’d stopped at a gas station nearly two hours ago - the bottle is the only thing left now, along with a handful of crumpled silvery wrappers.

Harry shakes his head. Shadows from the clouds cast patterns across his face, tinted with the light of the dying sun. “Nah.”

“You’re going to regret it,” Draco says. Harry spares him the briefest glance, one finger drumming absently on the wheel. “We have two hours left. You’ll crash.”

Harry makes a face, scrunched up eyes and down turned lips. “You drink it. Asshole.”

Draco laughs, tilting his head back and swallowes the last of it. It’s warm and flat, sugar sticking to his teeth. He runs his tongue over his lips and looks back towards Harry. “Don’t blame me when you drive us over the edge of a cliff.”

Harry grins. “How could I? You’re here, aren’t you?”

The click of the turn signal. The colours of the sky. The hum of the radio, near forgotten in the heat, forlorn notes and drifting voices.

“Yeah,” Draco says. “I am.”

Road trip

"I can't believe Pansy and Weaslette decided to get married on the other side of the world and now I'm stuck in this rust bucket with you." Draco groused fiddling with the aux cable.

"It's just France and you didn't have to come with me, you could've taken a flight... Oh wait, that's right, you're afraid of flying!" Harry teased as Draco swatted his shoulder.

He winked at Draco who flushed and turned to stare out the window.

written for the @drarrymicrofic prompt: roadtrip. i was unusually nervous about this one & i really don't know why😳

"We can't keep doing this much longer you know. It's getting risky, with him getting more powerful." Draco idly traces the shapes of clouds through the open window, the easterly wind buffeting his hair about willy-nilly.

The radio is playing low, a crooning song that Harry sincerely hopes is not Celestina Warbeck, although it probably is.

He looks over at Draco. Despite what he just said, Draco is basking in that carefree way that only a road trip brings out. Here, sitting in Mr. Weasley's Ford Anglia with all the windows rolled down and the April sun streaming in, he has no need for the defenses he usually arms himself with.

He catches Harry looking and tilts his head towards him, a fond smile playing on his lips.

Harry grins back, heart beating glad and strong for these small moments of peace in the midst of all the terror. He stretches his hand across the seat to tangle his fingers with Draco's.

"We'll figure it out," he says.

i’m sadly not actively working on anything at the moment, and basically only have two big things i’m hoping to write at some point this year, but will probably be going at rather slowly!

the first one is what would have been my wolfstar BB fic for last year if i hadn’t dropped, and it’s a canon divergent (war ends in 1979, most people live*) roadtrip fic with some good ole intense mutual pining, seasoned with forced proximity, Remus’ very sexy Ford Cortina and some glorious British landscape. the vibe so far is very Portrait of a Lady on Fire, in the sense that they stare at scenery and yearn. A LOT. it will also probably feature background jegulily because i love myself and i deserve it

*most people live is code for ‘i am killing Peter because i fucking hate that rat bastard’ but also am potentially making him good to add a sprinkle of pain because, well, it’s a mari fic 😅

the second one is an advent fic — which i planned a year in advance, yes, because i love christmas but mostly because i need to take it easy this year! it’s going to be a florist/bookstore AU because i LOVE them and i just feel the whole florist/bookstore/tattoo studio/coffeeshop AU concept isn’t much of a thing in the drarry fandom and i have a need! also i really enjoyed writing Harry as a recently-converted bookworm for Remix last year and i want more of him 🥺🥺
