Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse: Directed by Colin Teague. With Julian Morris, Tamzin Merchant, Jassa Ahluwalia, Dominic Mafham. A young knight and a dragon named Drago, whose lives they now share with one heart, join forces to protect a nest filled with dragon eggs from an evil sorcerer, as well undo a curse placed on Drago.

Did you know that Dragonheart had sequels? Or really a sequel and three(!) prequels? My personal ranking of the movies.

5. Dragonheart - A New Beginning (aka The Second One)

This is honestly better than I remember from my childhood. This is the most straightforward coming-of-age story of the Dragonheart movies, the CGI is easily the worst in it, but really, it’s a fun romp. Fuck the monarchy messages are still prevalent. Drake is a delightful baby dragon. It’s a fine movie, even if it has the most juvenile humour of the bunch. 

4. Dragonheart - Battle for the Heartfire (aka The Fourth One)

Okay this movie is an odd one. This is the most Direct Sequel out of all of them (sequel to the Third One, to be exact), which makes the only movie with a recurring dragon, in the shape of Drago. It also has an intriguing premise of the dragonheart-bond trickling down to descendants, and it bleeding into bonded pairs receiving powers for the first time. Also a pair of twins complicating the issue. The problem with this movie is, that the first half is criminally boring and badly paced, but once Drago decides he had Enough of this bullshit and starts being an asshole again, the movie gets So Good Y’All. I wish the whole movie was as unhinged as the second half. Also loses points for the least amounts of Fuck The Monarchy messaging in this.

3. Dragonheart - Vengeance (aka The Fifth One)

From this point on, all of them are Good Fucking Movies. Siveth, the first female dragon of the franchise is fucking delightfully weird, love a weird dragon lady. Lukas has a truly catastrophic amounts of powerful autism. Darius is what Aragorn would be if he would have had a few screw loose. Or more than a few. The main villain gains points for bringing back the Fuck The Monarchy, but the Villain Minisquad seem more fun and interesting. More delving into bonded pair-powers is always entertaining. All in all, a good movie, and genuinely interesting to discern the directions this movie took.

2. Dragonheart 3 - The Sorcerer’s Curse (aka the…. uh…. The Third One, obviously)

There is only one thing that tips this to second place over the first place, but otherwise this is a Good Fucking Movie. Drago is fucking iconic, and probably my favourite dragon. Gareth has a great character arc as a main character, and him and Drago are easily the funniest Bonded Pair of the bunch in my opinion. Absolute unhinged polycule main cast. Fuck The Monarchy is in full effect. Love to see it. I don’t know what else to say about it, it’s a Good Fucking Movie.

1. Dragonheart

The only thing that puts it here is that I have a shitton of nostalgia for this movie. Draco is an icon, Bowen is also an icon, fucking unhinged casting, beautiful score (which does come back over and over for the other movies obviously and you WILL want to cry), and generally, a very very good movie. Three, or even Five might be better movies, especially watching all of them in order, but I have a shitton of nostalgia for it.

Well, I just watched all 5 Dragonheart movies today. Hmm. It's a weird franchise. Where the chronological order is pretty much 3, 5, 4, 1, 2. Oh, and 3 is basically a remake of 1. And you can tell that the later movies only got made because Game Of Thrones was big. 4 especially feels the influence, considering it's the only one actually about that stuff, and also has a minor character who is deliberately made up to look like Daenerys in the blue dress (you probably know which dress I'm talking about) but acts like a typical damsel in distress because clearly the female protagonist in that movie is cooler than the one in the show. Anyways, if you've been told to stay away from the sequels, I would say, skip 2, since that's the only purely kids film in the franchise. Watch 3, 4, and 5, and then go back to 2 if you enjoyed the others but know what you're getting into.

Last year I did a double post dedicated to the dragons (SL 0427 / SL 0430) and while preparing materials for it I found out there are four more movies in the Dragonheart series. And the first thing that popped out reminded me of this song:

“(...) Not very sensitive to people who have Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia (...) If you’re afraid of big long words, here’s one you should know-a Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia (...)”

So you betcha I’m going to watch all of them once I’ll have more time - after all who could pass up learning that name? :)

Ranking Dragonheart Designs based on what I like

Draco, Dragonheart 1

Originally I was kinda lukewarm on his design, but after watching BTS and finding out the original inspiration for him was Foo Dogs, I warmed up. Really expressive face, a pioneer in computer animation, though I still prefer dragons with longer faces. I really like his anatomy, he’s a solid bloke with cool ridges and scale texture. I wish his wings were better connected to his body, they look a bit flimsy. Overall a very solid design, 7/10

Drake, Dragonheart 2: New Beginning

The prodigal son(?) of Draco, my least favorite Dragonheart movie also has my least favorite design. While I understand Drake is meant to be a younger version of Draco, something about him feels very Uncanny. I think it’s how short his snout is and how smooth his face looks compared to Draco. The rest of his body is similar to Draco, and same complains with the wings apply. 5/10

Drago, Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse

While not my favorite Dragonheart movie, it has, in my opinion, the coolest dragon design. Drago moves much more animalistic movements and really solid anatomy. I love his lil underbite, and the way he uses his wings like a bat to balance himself. Also, his shadow form that displays his skeleton is a really creative decision and looks sick as hell. He looks distinctly different from the other dragons in the series, while still looking like he Belongs to the series. 10/10

Drago, Dragonheart 4 Battle for The Heartfire, and Siveth, Dragonheart 5 Vengeance

My biggest complaint about this design isn’t necessarily with the design, it’s why Drago’s character model changed drastically from 3 to 4. It wouldn’t bother me as much if they didn’t use the same model for Siveth, which I’m 99% sure is the same model but colored blue. That being said! I really do love this design. It looks very grounded and I love how muscular/solid the dragons look. Even though they used Drago’s model for Siveth, I’m very happy that they only thing that changed is color. I love the shape of the face especially, they aren’t shrinkwrapped! 9/10
