Dragman by Steven Appleby
goodreads
Tumblr media
August Crimp can fly, but only when he wears women's clothes. Soaring above a gorgeous, lush vista of London, he is Dragman, catching falling persons, lost souls, and the odd stranded cat. After he's rejected by the superhero establishment, where masked men chase endorsement deals rather than criminals, August quietly packs up his dress and cosmetics and retreats to normalcy -- a wife and son who know nothing of his exploits or inclinations. When a technological innovation allows people to sell their souls, they do so in droves, turning empty, cruel, and hopeless, driven to throw themselves off planes. August is terrified of being outed, but feels compelled to bring back Dragman when Cherry, his young neighbor, begs him to save her parents. Can Dragman take down the forces behind this dreadful new black market? Can August embrace Dragman and step out of the shadows?
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this graphic novel before, but it does sound interesting!

i just read “my favorite things is monsters” based on your reccomendation—- any other horror graphic novels you recommend?
ohh i hope you liked it! i still need to reread..
i talked about this a little when i had just finished it but i rly like ultrasound by conor stechschulte. another very dark story that makes full use of the medium. some really great art that contributes beautifully to the frightening, disorienting vibe of the story.
and while im far from up to date on the series, ice cream man by w maxwell prince is always very good and very scary. kind of creepshow esque with its episodic-anthology-like format which i always find fun.
anything junji ito tends to be a banger but in terms of like longform stories rather than single chapter oneshots, tombs and hellstar remina are both favs of mine. plus you know. tomie and uzumaki obviously but i figure u know that. dissolving classroom is also fun imo if not particularly.. coherent.
umm what else.. infidel is a compelling and fucking stomach turning take on haunted house horror. theres also definitely more that i just cant remember the titles of rn.....
oh and while not horror, dragman by steven appleby is a really interesting speculative graphic novel i read recently that i promise is good i know how this looks from the summary but really its good its good
and ya know always read with caution pls!

Steven Appleby
Steven is an illustrator, fueled by obsessions in his life that drive him to work more in his art work. He has come to Uclan to give us a talk, and taught us about how his obsessions work.
Tumblr media
He used to live in Wooler in Northumberland, and grew up there until he went to art school in Manchester to get a degree in illustration. He studied Graphic designs. Then after he left, his life had finally begun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has developed comic strips and comic books that are all about transgender characters. She has made Crocs in frocks, Normal sex, and Drag-man. He plays with the characters by dressing them as the opposite sex. All of the Drag-man comics are sold in amazon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has also created his own comic strip of Captain star, which then turned into a children's cartoon show. I have seen a short clip of the animation, and it is exactly as how Steven had draw the characters.. He has also made products based on the show.
In my opinion, I don’t think the animation was that good, because it didn’t look like that Steven had started from storyboard. The characters look like ruff drawings.
He writes a schedule to plan when he works and when he rests. That to me sound a lot like me semester 2 planner for when I have to work between doing my graphic novels and my CV, and etc.
One of the biggest lessons I found from listening to him was that he wanted his stories to be ambitious and engaging. These words, ambitious and engaging, are key words to learn when making a story, because you want your audience to like your story. It should be ambitious as well as engaging.

dragman by steven appleby lives inside my head rent free, the art is so good and the subject matter is heartbreaking and uplifting and hilarious and terrifying all at once. this book is so incredible im begging everyone to read it if they can, ive read it a few times now and it never gets old.
(adding a trigger warning though: it does have scenes with nudity, graphic violence and transphobia and hate crimes/murders committed against trans women. it's at least partly a book abt a trans fem person exploring her gender, and the book in general just explores like... what it means to be a human, and the uncaring nature of capitalism and many other themes. it's surreal and funny but also definitely very dark at some points. the author herself is a trans woman but i definitely understand that this book could still be hard for some trans ppl to read because of the subject matter)

Dragman is an absurdist superhero comic by Steven Appleby. The hook for this story is that the titular Dragman gains his super powers from dressing in women’s clothing. It’s a really fun and obtuse take on how gender expression can be empowering for trans and gender non-conforming people. This comic is semi-autobiographical, as Appleby based the character on his own experiences being transgender. I find Appleby’s gender identity really interesting, because he was assigned male but started wearing women’s clothing and found that was representative of his true gender. However, he still uses his birth name and he/him pronouns (as of writing this) while explicitly calling himself transgender. His experiences (and in turn this comic) show how fluid yet specific being transgender can be and that, no matter how you express it, your true gender identity will always be empowering.

Dragman by Steven Appleby
There is a tendency is some transgender circles (and beyond) to argue that those that have normally been referred to as “crossdressers” are not really trans. Indeed, there are “crossdressers” who would say the same thing, arguing that they are cis.
All of this is misleading, because it means that there are two completely distinct categories of trans people. The fact is that a lot of trans people – male or female – use crossdressing as a way of exploring and expressing their gender identity. This is part of their transgender journey. The drag and crossdressing subcultures are full of people like these.
That does not mean that all crossdressers are gender dysphoric people who could benefit from transitioning. Far from it. Some belong to the part of the gender continuum where expressing one gender may go hand in hand with identifying with the other. That’s fine. That’s OK. Trans is an umbrella term that covers all kinds of gender variance.
Tumblr media
The British artist Steven Appleby, an MTF crossdresser, belongs to those who have not transitioned, but who nevertheless want and need to express “the other side”.
Appleby has given a voice to people like this in the new superhero comic book: Dragman, a humorous look at contemporary Britain.
Rachel Cooke writes:
Dragman tells the story of August Crimp, a husband and father whose transvestism, when the book begins, is a long-held secret. August discovered his passion for wearing women’s clothes as a teenager when he found a stocking down the back of a sofa and instinctively pulled it on, his nerve endings tingling excitingly as he did so. But that wasn’t all he discovered. Moments later, his head collided unexpectedly with a ceiling. Dressed as a man, you see, August is just an ordinary bloke. Dressed as a woman, however, he is Dragman, a superhero whose sequined frock allows him to fly through the sky like some glamorous, jet-powered mannequin.
Dragman is available from Penguin.
