How successful would Dr. Buckaroo Banzai…
Propaganda for mic and wrestling skills:
He’s a polymath, a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and a rock star. Might as well add pro-wrestler to his list of talents.

Billy romance comix cover for Tomorrow's Just Another Day
→ FAILURES OF SCIENCE index
You can't even see all the VHS covers I drew! Man, what a wasted effort! (List below the cut)
I asked people on BlueSky.app who were approximately Billy or Alison's age (late Gen X to "geriatric" Millennial) now mid 40s what were the cult videos that obsessed them back in the day that they remember renting—
The Brain That Wouldn't Die
Buckaroo Banzai
Evil Dead 2
Faster Pussycat Kill Kill
The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T
Forbidden Zone
Frankenhooker
Lord Love A Duck
Meet the Feebles
Mondo Cane
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Phantom of the Paradise
Zardoz
Xanadu
Withnail and I
Valley Girl
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
True Stories
They Live
The Tingler
Tapeheads
ReAnimator
Rubin & Ed
Shock Corridor
Rock n' Roll High School
Repo Man
Didn't think I could get away using the FREAKS (1932) poster with the thematically relevant but unfortunately worded tagline...
ICYMI—
A Conjectural Technologies backstory story (circa '95-'96ish) Billy has a crush on the mean grrrl who works the video store. Pete suddenly finds himself ever-popular with a whole new fan base

Of all the influences you draw on for this blog, what characters in them does Nero want ...
to punch the hardest?
give the firmest handshake to?
put on blast?
buy a drink?
[[ This is a really good format for a whole meme of its own tbh
to punch the hardest?
Given the opportunity I feel like Nero will get into it with almost anybody. I think it goes without saying he'd try his damnedest to punch out a xenomorph/yautja/combat synth/etc. if he has no other weapons and desperately wants to survive.
Punching them because he doesn't like them much? Weyland-Yutani execs. Really, any megacorporation suit. Michael Garibaldi and Ranger Marcus Cole from Babylon 5, Maybe the crew from John Carpenter's" Dark Star" as well, Several secondary characters from Bojack Horseman & Futurama
give the firmest handshake to?
Azi Narine, Sam, and Ursula (really, majority of the folks from Scavengers Reign), G'Kar & Ambassador Kosh Captain Benjamin Sisko (really, general respect for Starfleet captains and crew tbh) Crew of the Bebop Ellen Ripley, Bishop, Pvt. Hicks, An honorable Yautja, Probably the Clone Commanders, Droids, & background Glup Shittos of Star Wars Dave Lister and Kryten of Red Dwarf Buckaroo Banzai & the Hong Kong Cavaliers/Blue Blazer Irregulars, Most everyone from Stargate SG-1/Atlantis, John Crichton + the crew of Moya from Farscape, Dr. Niles Crane, the Greendale Study Group (everyone at least once at one point or another, maybe even collectively on a really good day), The Fantastic Four
Nero can often be a petty vindictive bastard but some folks he can't help but respect I think
put on blast?
The crew of the USS Cerritos from Star Trek Lower Decks (and lovingly so, they'd blast him and his crew right back I think) The crew of the Bebop Ambassador Kosh Kamen & maybe Kris Scavengersreign SG-1's Colonel Jack O'Neill (he's on the handshake list simultaneously), Dr. Frasier Crane, Reagan Ridley and the rest of Cognito Inc., Bojack Horseman, The Greendale Study Group, All Black Mesa Research Facility Alumni, Arnold Judas Rimmer of Red Dwarf
buy a drink?
Most of the crew of the USS Cerritos, Faye Valentine, maybe some other Cowboy Bebop folks too

In History, Maybe - A coming-of-age story starring Hazel Nylan and her on-again-off-again girlfriend, Stephanie McCormick just trying to make it in the third biggest “city” in Manitoba.
Hazel Nylan , Stephanie McCormick
Nobody of the Luck - A fantasy-isekai story about depressed popular boy getting sucked into a fantasy themed eroge called Nobody of the Luck and saving the world by accident.

Tristan, Cendrillion
RandoRanger - A team of spandex technicolour clad heroes are here to defeat the hentai tentacle monsters!
Masuyo Kusanagi, Ryota Matsuda
Starry Starry Night - Akiko Valentina constantly wished that she’d take that advice to heart for once in her life. Growing up, it seemed like every wish she’d make would come true. Life should’ve been a breeze… and it was for a while. Her family had won the lottery a few years ago, along with her mother’s seaweed gin distillery taking off which brought the Valentina Family even more fortune. Classes would be cancelled, boys asked her to the dance, her favourite TV shows would suddenly be back even when they were cancelled whenever she seemed to will it. Though, like a bad 90s kids horror series, there was always a cruel twist at the end.
Now living alone in the penthouse apartment her now dead family’s fortune got her, Akiko spends her free time overindulging herself in luxury, to distract herself from the dark. Things had gotten stale after two years of spoiling herself rotten.
“I wish something would happen in my boring life.”
One night, she’s approached by a stranger on the way home from partying…
Amber “Akiko” Valentina, Akira Angelus, Blair Princeton, Charles Broadmoor, Cheyenne Princeton, Fafnir, Gaylene, Kirk Grimme, Nyarou, Thorn
Fairy Ring - A small town on the border of southern Manitoba that hides some magical secrets.
Antigone, “Kisecawchuck”, Dorothy, Carly, David Young, Abigail Maidstone
Roseburough - A city with a dark past–its first settlers were a group of cultist for a demon of lust–that has a proclivity for less than pure activities.
Amelie, Anita Wood, Aurora, Circe, Dani Michaels, Daniel Michaels, Eitaro Satou, Emiri Satou, Genesis “Genni” Jones, Joey Spence
Eidolons and Eudaemonia -Eudaimonia is a world where each country worships a particular element. Each country has a temple and a candle that must be lit at all times to prevent a calamity. Its said that the candles represent hope, the one thing that kept ‘humanity’ going after the first calamity. Every few centuries, new candles must be created and infused with magic and blessings from each country before being placed in the temples and lit. It’s a ritual that has been carried on long before the formation of the Church of the Star Bringer, which eventually took control of candle duties.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
The only guaranteed way to love The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is to see it repeatedly as a kid. This is the definition of a cult film. It’s weird, and kinda junky but if you look closely, you can see what it wants to do and overall, it succeeds at it. I know there are some people who will instantly fall head over heels in love with it.
Polymath Dr. Buckaroo Banzai (Peter Weller) becomes the first man to travel through solid matter when he and his mentor, Dr. Hikita (Robert Ito) perfect the oscillation over thruster. When news of this accomplishment reaches the insane Dr. Emilion Lizardo (John Lithgow) - a former co-worker of Hikita’s - the madman escapes from captivity. Strange visions of reptilian humanoids reveal Lizardo is paving the way for an alien invasion.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai captures a unique experience. As a kid, I used to pick up random comic books. I didn’t understand half of what was happening because I was reading issue 3 of 3 but what I could piece together seemed awesome. This is what this picture feels like. Creepy aliens. A hero that seemed normal but was actually a super smart physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot and rock star. An entourage of awesome best friends. Fast cars. A rad sound track. Explosions. A love interest who proves romance isn’t dead. Yes, the plot is needlessly complicated and the limited exposition means you'll be totally lost. The bad guys are pure evil, the hero can do no wrong. Either you embrace it or shouldn’t even bother. You gotta go in ready to be brainwashed a little bit.
The giddy enthusiasm overcomes the picture’s numerous flaws: the bewildering romance, zany developments and confusing plot. Presumably, some of this would be clearer if they had ever made “Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League” but this being a one-and-done sort of actually makes the movie better. Maybe director W. D. Richter and writer Earl Mac Rauch knew those who would “get” this movie would be few and far between. Maybe they knew a second movie would never materialize but they give us comfort with the knowledge that somewhere in an alternate reality, these stories did continue. Or maybe they were just getting ahead of themselves. Wondering what might’ve been is part of the fun.
I’m putting forward a lot of enthusiasm for The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension but to be perfectly honest, this movie didn’t really do it for me. All I heard from other people was how awesome and underrated this movie is. Hopefully this review encourages you to see it without raising your expectations too highly. I won’t watch this again but I understand why someone might call it their favourite and understand the appeal. Maybe it’ll be for you so despite all of the flaws, I have to recommend it to people and in my mind, that tips it into the “good movie” category. (January 17, 2020)

Rebooting Excel and Reinventing Ourselves, w/ Charlie Ellis
On today’s episode, Charlie Ellis, former Program Manager at Microsoft and expert on the heart of excel, the calc engine, sits down for an amazing conversation. He brings with him stories of the evolution of Office that began with the retooling of Excel 2007. That reboot went on to become a veritable restart of the program that nearly wiped the slate clean by creating what would in essence become a new, more responsive product. With so many big changes happening at the same time inevitably there was some pushback from the users. Fortunately, for modern users, those changes were pushed through and eventually removed a ton of the frustrations of the original Excel.
This recording was unique. Emotions ran high, personality types were broken down, and all parties involved pulled back the curtain on their inner selves. Instead of just focusing on Impostor Syndrome, in this episode we hear more about being neurodivergent and how that can affect the work-life balance as well as the work personality that our coworkers are exposed to through social compassion. Of course, when things get that real, some conversations have to be taken with a grain of salt and ultimately removed from the episode. Don’t worry, at the end of the day, as with every episode and every topic, we all remain friends and perhaps even grow a little closer because of the conversation.
Through thoughtful redirection, everyone involved artfully steers the conversation back to less dangerous but no less interesting waters. While you don’t get to hear it all, you won’t want to miss this episode.
