*The ‘Tribal Card’: Not ‘wise’ option for Any Governing Party in Sierra Leone (Part One)*

Dr. Abubakarr H. Kargbo, the *Chairman of the National Commission on Democracy (NCD*) oozed with contempt for our political class when I interviewed him on January 20, 2014, in his office in Freetown: “We don’t have political ideologies in Sierra Leone. Our political psyche is tribal and primordial! Our system is patrimonial...”

The view of Dr. Kargbo have been given empirical credence by a study done by a Social Anthropologist, Dr. Nathaniel King; titled, *‘Citizens’ Perception of Sierra Leone’s Ethno-Political Divide and Diversity Management’*; a Max Planck Research Associate; dated, 3rd September, 2013; that the people of Sierra Leone surveyed arrived at this consensus that tribalism...: *“...is mainly caused by politicians...”; “.... has become entrenched in leadership and politics in the country....”*

According to Dr. King’s survey, the view of ordinary Sierra Leoneans on the two main parties is sad: *“Sierra Leone’s two leading political parties All People’s Congress (APC) and Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), are mainly tribalistic...”.* Tertiary-educated mega star musician, Emerson,could have read Dr. King’s work before coming out with his latest song or ‘sermon’, ‘Kokobeh’ – in which Emerson appears to be singing or sermonizing for Sierra Leoneans generally as being fed up with the intense competition between SLPP and APC, without it necessarily resulting into accelerated development in the country. If Dr. King’s aforementioned study is to be given credence, it should be food for thought for our politicians of all hues. *Sierra Leoneans make “tribalism” number three in their rung of most deleterious problems, or, “diversity management”* .According to King (which is echoed in Emerson’s ‘Kokobeh’ song), “the strongest point of diversity mismanagement in Sierra Leone are mismanagement of differences between rich and poor, mismanagement of the gap between urbanity and rurality, and mismanagement of the chasm between the center of power and financial resources, which still remains in Freetown, and many parts of the interior which are marginalized.... “

In a jingle being aired regularly on many local broadcast radio by Dr. Kargbo’s NCD (produced with passion by the eminent intellectual of the School of African Studies, Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Dr. Desouza George), the point is brought out that “tribalism” is principally responsible for the shameful paradox of Sierra Leone – a rich country, but saddled with poor people –and the ignominy of ‘those immigrants who entered Sierra Leone a few decades ago as hewers of wood and carriers of water being today the super rich people, lording over indigenous Sierra Leoneans’. In spite of such patriotic media thrust, Dr. Kargbo’s NCD is financially malnourished. It could be that the politicians in the executive and legislative branches may not like the fact that he could be trying to rob them of their principal ‘winning political weapon’ –“tribalism”. After all, if successive generations of politicians in different political parties (or, military juntas) have successfully played the *‘*Tribal Card’* to win legislative and parliamentary elections or gain power in the center, why should they now be convinced that it is a bad thing?* Except, of course Thinkers and writers like us give them the ‘psych’ electric shock’ to jog them out of their selective acute amnesia (or, ‘forget-iasis’) and severe lack of foresight....

Sure enough, our Sierra Leone’s recent history teaches us that a political party or group can play the Tribal Card to gain power; but, to maintain itself in power, the Tribal Card is a slippery ground to skate on; or, if a party has used the Tribal Card to gain power and maintain itself in power for a decade or more, it would end up losing power with cataclysmic consequences for the party, and country.

Prof. Jimmy Kandeh’*s ‘Politicization of Ethnic Identities in Sierra Leone*’

I now make reference to a 1992 Paper written by today’s Prof. Jimmy Kandeh (a tenured professor in a top university in the US with over 25 years experience), titled, ‘Politicization of Ethnic Identities in Sierra Leone ’ (Source: African Studies Review, Vol. 35, No. 1 (Apr., 1992), pp. 81-99; published by African Studies Association; Stable URL:http://www.jstor.org/stable/524446): “*The ethnic selectivity and bias of cabinet appointments under the SLPP, especially during Albert Margai's premiership ...., was also an important contextual factor in the politicization of northern and, more specifically, Temne, identity.** Although there were more Mende than Temne ministers in his predecessor's cabinet, Temne representation in Albert Margai's cabinet was cut in half from four to two ministers. Notable among the ministers replaced by Albert Margai was John Karefa-Smart who, although not Temne, was supported by northern elites in his bid to succeed Milton Margai as prime minister....”.* I hope the educated elite and ‘power elite’ in Sierra Leone would give life to my published suggestion of an ‘Ethnic Commission’ to neutralise the ulcerous tribalism in our country. (The SLPP leader and Prime Minister between 1964 and 1967 that Prof. Jimmy Kandeh mention above happens to be my biological maternal granduncle – Sir Albert Margai). *Sir. Albert Margai was the apex of the leadership that stoked the flames of ‘Mende Tribalism’ in Sierra Leone. The Mende ethnic jingoism was buttressed by aform of intellectual sense of superiority by the Mendes. * For about a hundred years right up to the time of the Independence Era in Africa, the Creoles (or Krio) were the undisputed leaders in nearly all realms of Negroid intellectualism and professionalism in Sierra Leone – the doctors, judges, engineers, etc. The first non-Creole medical doctor was Dr. Milton Margai, and the first Non-Creole lawyer was his paternal brother, Albert Margai – that was in the 1940s. The British colonialists focussed on establishing the initial, and best, secondary schools in the Mende-speaking South/East of the country. By the time of independence, the Mende-speaking South/East provided most of the educated elite, and ordinary educated people, to govern the country. In the civil service, the Mende-speaking peoples (the Mendes, who militarily conquered smaller tribes when they invaded this part of West Africa about 200 years ago, evolved into a civilizing influence, and potent ‘colonialists’, successfully assimilating all the minority tribes – Sherbros, Gissis, Vais, a few Creoles – in their South/Eastern region) were a vastly disproportionate number among non-Creoles. *That head start into modernity in Sierra Leone of the Mende-speaking peoples bred in them arrogance, which was epitomised in 1964 by the Mende-speaking Prime Minister, Sir. Albert Margai* (His biological root could really have made him a Kono, also assimilated by the Mendes).

Within a short period of grabbing the reins of prime minister powers from his deceased elder brother in 1964, Sir. Albert Margai swiftly and recklessly put his ethnic jingoism into play – with ‘Young Turks’ like Peter Tucker being made Head of the Civil Service (where there had been established a ‘conveyor belt’ system that would only allow a civil service boss to reach that peak when way over 50 years of age) when Peter Tucker was not yet 40 years of age. That, of course, angered and alarmed both the Creole and Temne (Northern) elite!!

*Even with about 50% population, and military and administrative advantage....*

Let us reflect on Prof. Jimmy Kandeh’s (who hails from the Mende-speaking South/East) researched work on the period again: “.... *The death of Milton Margai in 1964 led to a conspicuous erosion in leadership tolerance of the political heterogeneity of society. Whereas the military maintained a semblance of autonomy under Milton Margai, it was excessively politicized by Albert Margai. By rapidly Africanizing the officer corps of the military, Albert Margai sought not only to reward his supporters but, more specifically, to create a Mende-dominated army. At the time of Milton Margai's death in 1964, 15 out of the 50-member officer establishment of the army were British officers. By 1967, only 3 British officers remained, with most of the outgoing officers replaced by Mende officers....”.*

I did my graduate thesis in FBC, University of Sierra Leone (1978) on ‘The Sierra Leone Military’. That informed me that by 1967, 74% of the officers, and 65% of rank and file, in the Sierra Leone Military were from the Mende-speaking South/East. *The 1967 parliamentary elections was a disguised form of ‘tribal war’ - pitting the Temne-speaking and Creole-dominated North/West (in which the APC won ALL the parliamentary seats) against the Mende-speaking South/East (in which the SLPP won about 98% of parliamentary seats).* The Governor General (representing the Queen of England) recognized the APC Leader, Siaka Stevens, as the winner of the 1967 elections, and had him sworn as Prime Minister. The Mende head of military then, Brigadier David Lansana, arrested the Siaka Stevens and his key supporters, and declared Martial Law. The largely Temne-speaking crowd outside State House refused to capitulate to Brigadier Lansana – and went wild in anger. When it appeared as if the country was descending into anarchy, Mende-speaking military officers – Majors Jumu, Kai-Samba, and Blake – arrested Brig. Lansana; and, to pacify the Temne-North, brought in a Creole from England, Col. Andrew Juxon-Smith, to head the first military government in Sierra Leone. After a military coup against Juxon-Smith’s NRC junta, the APC’s Siaka Stevens was sworn in as Prime Minister in 1968.

From 1967 when the SLPP lost power, they didn’t get it back until 1996 – 29 years after!!! The lessons to be learned there are: the Tribal Card, tribal jingoism, tribal extremism, tribal arrogance of the Mende-speaking people led by Sir. Albert Margai (SLPP) united the Creoles and Temne-speaking people of the North, and was countered by their own Tribal Extremism. . . (TO BE CONTINUED!!)

 Mollie   Handy, 94

Mrs. Mollie Wilkins Handy, age 94 widow of Rex Handy passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Wilkes Senior Village.

           No services will be held at this time.  A private family burial will be held at a later date at Mountlawn Memorial Park.

           Mrs. Handy was born June 18, 1924 in Yadkin County to William S. and Dinah Talley Wilkens.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro.

           In addition to her parents and husband; Rex Handy, she was preceded in death by a sister; Victoria Wilkins Wendland, two brothers; William Wilkins and John Wilkins,step-son; Gene Handy and nephew; Warren Shore.

           She is survived by a niece; Lillian Shore Gambill, step-son; Larry Handy, step-grandson; Michael Handy, great nephew; Charles Gambill and great niece; Lisa Forehand.

           In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

 Edna Barber, 94

Mrs. Edna Neal Barber, age 94 widow of Malcolm Julius Barber of Wilkesboro passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Curis at Wilkesboro.

           Funeral services were held  July 24, at Rickard's Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Richard Watts officiating.  Burial will be in Rickard's Chapel Cemetery.  

           Mrs. Barber was born June 12, 1924 in Catawba County to Hartie and Lara Jolly Neal.  She was a member of Rickard's Chapel AME Zion Church.  She was a member of the Rickard's Chapel Missionary Senior Choir, Missionary Society and Mother of the Church.

           In addition to her parents and husband; Malcolm Julius Barber, she was preceded in death by six sisters; Eva Whicker, Ida Shuford, Cora Wilborn, Carolyn Barber, Mary Harris, Rebecca Wilborn and five brothers; Edward Neal, Jim Wilborn, Bill Wilborn, Henry Wilborn and Ike Wilborn.  

           She is survived by two daughters; Angela Adams and husband Charles of Ellenwood, GA, Joyce Shelton and husband Gary of Sacramento, CA, five sons; Julius Barber and wife Susie, Floyd Barber and wife Katie, Marvin F. Barber and wife Jacquelynn, Malcolm C. Donald Beamon, 62

Mr. Donald Wayne Beamon, age 62 of North Wilkesboro passed away Friday, July 20, 2018 at his home.

           Funeral services will be held  July 25, at Cub Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Sampson and Rev. Scotty Roten officiating.  Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 5:30 PM prior to the service at the church.    

           Mr. Beamon was born February 15, 1956 in Forsyth County to Donald Royce and Ruby Mae Burchette Beaman. He serviced in the United States Navy.

           He was preceded in death by his parents and brother; Thomas Winford Beaman.

           He is survived by two sons; Martin Wayne Beamon, Jacob Nathaniel Beamon both of Wilkesboro, Jamie Ashley Beamon; mother of his children of Wilkesboro, sister; Margaret (Sue) Rhoades and husband Tommy of North Wilkesboro, two brothers; Robert Beaman and wife Natalie of North Wilkesboro, Jimmy Beaman and wife Tammy of Roaring River, and step-father; James LeFevers.and step-brother; James Daniel Lefevers and wife Julie of Crumpler.

Andrew  Kilby, 92

Andrew Lomax Kilby, Sr. (Bud) passed away July 18, 2018 at the age of 92. He was born January 13, 1926 to Andrew Franklin Kilby and Grace Lomax Kilby. Mr. Kilby was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Betty Summers Kilby, and his sister, Grace Frank Mayberry.

           Mr. Kilby is survived by his children: Andrew Lomax Kilby, Jr. (Mary); John Asbury Kilby Sr. (Phyllis); and, Betty Ann Kilby. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sarah Kilby Munson (Scott); Anne Kilby; Elisha Grace Kilby Jernigan (Justin); John Asbury Kilby, Jr. (Lacey); Jenni Foster Roope; Beau Foster (Katy); and by his great grandchildren: Drew Roope; Grey Roope; Harrison Jernigan; Pierce Jernigan, and Lizzie Foster.

           Mr. Kilby was President of Yadkin Valley Motor Company, North Carolina's oldest Ford dealership established in 1915. He worked there six days a week, arriving by 6:30 AM, until 6 days before his death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro, NC and served as superintendent of the Children's Building there for 20 years. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of Wilkes General Hospital serving as its Chairman during a major expansion. He was a charter member of Oakwoods Country Club, the North Wilkesboro Elks Club, the Kiwanis Club, and a past member of Ford's Dealer Council.

           He attended Davidson College prior to his voluntary enlistment in the US Army Air Force on December 7, 1943. He proudly served as a bottom-turret and waist gunner on a B24 Liberator bomber during World War II in the 2nd Bomb Squadron of the 22nd Bomb Group of the 5th Air Force. The majority of B24s were made at Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Plant. When the war ended, Mr. Kilby served as part of the US occupation force in Japan.

           After leaving the military service, Mr. Kilby attended college in Bowling  Green, Kentucky. He returned from there in 1948 to work as a partner with his father at Yadkin Valley Motor Company in 1948. He worked at Yadkin Valley his entire life beginning in his early teens.

 A graveside service with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 was held at Mountlawn Memorial   July 20,  with Dr. Bert Young and Rev. Steve Snipes officiating.  

           The family requests no food.

           In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro.

 Brian Curry, 49

Mr. Brian Everett Curry, age 49 of Moravian Falls passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center following a long battle with Diabetes.

           Funeral services were held    July 20, 2018 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Mitch King officiating.  

           Mr. Curry was born May 29, 1969 in Wilkes County to JoAnn Curry.  

           He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother; Mary V. Kerley.

           He is survived by his wife; Tammy Watcher Daniels, his son; Matthew Brian Curry, and wife Kimberley, mother; JoAnn Curry, three brothers; Paul Curry and wife Shea, Mark Curry and wife Tina, Chad Curry and wife Kaycee and three grandchildren; Lucas Curry, Gaven White and Haiden Jarvis.

           Brian was employed at Tyson Foods for 25 years.  He was a loving father, husband, grandfather and was a Christian. He took great pride in his family and his favorite pastime was riding his Harley on the parkway.

           Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA  22312.

 Eula Foster, 83

Mrs. Eula Huffman Foster, age 83 widow of Harold Hayes Foster of Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

           Funeral services were held July 20,  Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.    

           Mrs. Foster was born October 21, 1934 in Wilkes County to Everette Monroe and Matilda Minton Huffman.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was the owner-operator of Foster's Lawn and Garden Center.

           In addition to her parents and husband; Harold Hayes Foster, she was preceded in death by eight sisters; Ina, Vera, Erie, Esther, Veoria, Marge, Etolia and Wyona and four brothers; James, Glenn, Theodore and EM.

           She is survived by three daughters; Sheila Nichols of Winston-Salem, Yvonne Ewing and husband Wayne of Clemmons, Denise McIntyre and husband Jim of Sparta and one son; Harold H. Foster, Jr., of Winston-Salem, nine grandchildren; Gary Hamby, Jr., Sonya Brooks, Thomas Nichols, III, Derek Nichols, Sean Nichols, Crystal Brooks, Shannan Foster, Clarice Foster, Nadine Foster, ten great grandchildren Cade Hamby, Justin Nichols, Jacob Nichols, Rachel Nichols, Dylan Nichols, Kayla Nichols, Ethan Nichols, Zach Nichols, Hannah Nichols, Jared Nichols, Tori Nichols, Connor Lockey and three great great grandchildren; Lily Nichols, Thomas Nichols, IV and Jace Gunn.

           Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to SECU Hospice Home, 243 North Lee Street, Yadkinville, NC 27055.

Herman Brown, 64

Herman "Freeman" Brown, age 64, of Hays, passed away Monday, July 16, 2018 at his home. He was born June 11, 1954 in Wilkes County to Rufus and Emma Wagoner Brown. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Teresa Ann Royal Brown.

           Surviving are his daughter, April Delbert and husband Jason of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Brea Delbert and Kyle Delbert; brothers, Rex Brown and wife Judy, Travis Brown and wife Aliene all of Statesville, sisters, Gay Shaw of Harmony, Faye Roten and husband Howard of Troutman, Eula Mae Haynes, Louise Billings and husband Morse all of Hays, Patricia McDaniels and husband Auddie of Wilkesboro; sister in law, Shiela Wilmoth and husband Jerry of North Wilkesboro; brothers in law, Gary Royal and wife Joyce, Terry Royal all of Hays.

           Graveside service was held   July 18,   at Pine View Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Travis Brown officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Wake Forest Baptist Health Wilkes Regional Dialysis Center, 1370 West D Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.               Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

  Jameson Levi Reid

Jameson Levi Reid, infant son of Tyler Joe Reid and Savannah Jo Walsh Harris, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center.

           He is survived by his parents, Tyler Reid and Savannah Walsh Harris; paternal grandparents, Herb and Sandra Reid; maternal grandparents, Norman and Jo Lynn Walsh Harris; great grandparents, Brenda Trivette, Stan and Connie Walsh, Gwyn Harris and Edgar Harris.

           Graveside service was held  July 21, at Mountlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Donnie Shumate and Rev. David Dyer officiating. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Juan Antonio Arnoldo Pena Alvarado passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018.

           Funeral services were held July 21,  at Rein-Sturdivant Chapel.          

           Mr. Alvarado was born March 8, 1957 in El Salvador to Tiburcio Pena and Cervanda Alvarado.  

           He was preceded in death by his parents.

           He is survived by a daughter; Cindy Pena of North Wilkesboro, two sons; Elvis Omar Pena and wife Elsa of North Wilkesboro  and Geovani Pena of Long Island, New York and four grandchildren; Melanie Pena, Jennifer Pena, Angie Pena and Elvis Leonardo Pena.

작은 도서관을 위한 학년별 추천도서 목록 – 영어책 (킨더부터 고등학생까지)

        질문을 받았습니다.

해외에 <어린이 영어 도서관>을 지을 예정인데 책을 추천해 달라고요.

    1. 특정 독자층을 대상으로 하는 목록입니다.

  추천도서 목록은 굉장히 다양합니다.

교사협회, 출판계, 도서관 사서들이 추천하는 책들도 있고

부모들이 추천하는 책들도 있고

베스트셀러 목록도 있구요.

교사나 부모에게 추천하는 목록도 있고 아이들에게 추천하는 목록도 있습니다.

  그런데 해외에 살면서 도서관을 접하기 힘든 아이들을 위한 영어책이라면

미국이나 한국에 사는 아이들과는 좀 달라야 하지 않을까 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

그래서 자기가 살고 있는 작은 동네를 벗어나기 쉽지 않은 아이들이라는 것을 염두에 두고 아래 목록을 작성했습니다.

한국이나 미국에 계신 분들에게는 적당하지 않은 목록이 될 수 있습니다.

특정한 아이가 아닌 소수더라도 다양한 아이들일 수 있음을 염두에 두고 작성했습니다.

특정한 관심사를 가진 여러분 자녀를 위해서는 적당하지 않을 수 있음을 미리 말씀드립니다.

  사람들의 왕래가 많지 않은 곳에 살지만 정치적 특성상 영어권인 아이들을 위해 작성한 목록이라서

파닉스나 문법 어휘 등 영어 공부가 목적인 책들은 포함하지 않았습니다.

          2. 순위별 추천 목록

  예산에 따라 구비할 수 있는 범위가 달라질 것 같습니다.

그래서 0순위, 1순위, 2순위 등 순위를 정해서 목록을 작성했습니다.

우선 0순위의 책들은 학년과 큰 상관없이 모든 독자층을 대상으로 한 책들입니다.

2,3순위로 갈수록 있으면 좋지만 없어도 무관한 책들입니다.

예산 범위 내에서 0순위와 1순위를 먼저 구입하신 후 2순위 3순위 순서대로 구입하시면 됩니다.

특별히 수요가 많은 연령대는 다른 연령에 비해 다음 순위까지 구입하시면 될 것 같습니다.

3. How tall is your OC?

Hermes is average, maybe a little bit on the taller side. But these days he comes off as smaller than he is because he's thin and tends to slouch as if wanting to hide within himself.

Dr. Kay is also pretty average, but the way he carries himself makes him appear taller.

Kit is Tall. Not a giant like another character of mine, Louis, but he's close. He is also lean and wiry, which only adds to the effect. He certainly sticks out.

5. What does your OC normally wear? What would your OC wear on a special night?

Hermes has spent some time homeless prior to joining the ship's crew, so what he has is only one or two ill-fitting shirts, a simple vest, a pair of breeches and stockings he's spent some of his last remaining money on, and a dark neckerchief. He also has a a simple earring but I haven't decided yet whether it's something he's had before or gets it during his time on the ship. On special occasions, if he could afford it, he would definitely dress up. He used to be a gentleman after all.

Dr. Kay typically wears what one would expect of a man of his status - the usual coat, typically blue (or other muted colors, he doesn't like browns and greys though), a waistcoat, a shirt, a scarf etc. What however immediately strikes those who see him is that he always wears long trousers like a peasant. This is because he suffered polio as a child, which left his right leg badly affected, and he feels uncomfortable with the more acceptable tight-fitting breeches.

Kit also wears long trousers, along with shirts with long sleeves, but this is mostly to avoid sunburn. He usually wears a wide straw hat for the same reason. But when the weather is more forgiving, he will prefer to roll up his sleeves and switch to breeches without stockings. He likes the feeling of wind on his skin. Also even though he was recently made an officer, you will usually not see him in an uniform if he can avoid it. This is because the one he currently got is simply too short for him. Until he gets one that fits him, he will only wear it during ship ceremonies and always try to stand behind one of his shorter comrades, so others can't see the short sleeves.

8. How does your OC talk/what does your OC’s voice sound like?

I haven't decided on that yet. Kit would have a Newport accent though.

10. What does your OC keep in a special drawer?

Not sure for Hermes tbh. If he's had anything valuable he's most likely sold it. Most of those things were associated with his family anyway, so any sentimental importance would end up soured.

Kit probably still has a handful of Peuco's juvenile feathers. That bird is his baby.

Dr. Kay's special drawer contains all the opiates he needs to keep locked up from the crew.

34. What is your OC’s dream job and/or current profession?/35. How is your OC working towards his/her dream job and/or achieved his/her current profession?/36. What are your OC’s thoughts/opinions of his/her current profession?

Hermes was supposed to take over his father's position once his father retires, which was something he was pretty content with, but then he died, came back, gone mad, and was disowned. He has since abandoned any dreams and just seeks to survive. He joined the crew he is currently in out of necessity. Hermes needed money and food, they needed hands.

Dr. Kay wanted to be a man of medicine and a man of medicine he is. He of course had to attend schools and get practice, and was helped a lot by his family's connections, but here he is and he is more than happy. You could say that his reality ended up even better than his dreams since he's also found a wife who shares his interest. This voyage is his first as an official surgeon and the first time he could also take his wife along as his assistant, something they have both been looking forward to for years.

Kit has been working on ships since he was 10, he hasn't known anything else and doesn't seek anything else. But after being given a shot as a midshipman he is slowly finding that perhaps he is better suited as a regular sailor rather than an officer.

43. What kind of sense of humor does your OC have?

Hermes is not in much of a mental state for jokes these days, and his sense of humor is something I still need to dig around in.

Dr. Kay loves to make puns and witty remarks based on the situation, and loves when he can annoy people with them. He is so hardwired for verbal humor that he often lets it slip in the middle of arguments, which can deescalate the situation, or make it worse.

Kit is a jokester in general. He's also adept at verbal humor and often gets into pun wars with Dr. Kay much to the annoyance of everyone nearby. He is also not a stranger to pranks, tricks, rude gestures, and particularly loves involving Peuco. Some would say his sense of humor froze the moment he boarded a ship as a boy and hasn't changed since. However, a lot of the humor is to deflect any mean remarks towards him, or as a shield from his own painful past.

44. What are some things that greatly upset your OC?

Hermes is upset nearly all the time on account of suffering The Horrors.

Dr. Kay tends to take his patient's problems as his own, even if he has no way of actually helping them. Some would say this makes him ill suited as a doctor since sometimes he gets so worked up about a patient's bad situation it won't let him sleep. He will also not stand bigotry, particularly towards his wife. Offenses against her are perhaps the only reason he would resort to physical violence.

Harm Peuco in any way and Kit is out for murder.

64. What are some habits your OC has picked up?

Hermes spends most of his time looking down and avoid people's faces. To not see The Horrors. Also, when he's upset, anxious, or in general greatly emotionally unsettled, he tends to put his hand to his chest.

If possible, when sitting down, Dr. Kay will usually put both arms and rest his chin on his crutch in front of him. He also gestures a lot when he speaks.

Some cremates will tell you that if you observe Kit long enough, you'll notice he seems to have adopted some movements and habits from his hawk. He likes to spend time high up in the rigging and when something catches his interest, he will slightly bob his head from side to side. He will also tap with his fingers or his foot when bored or nervous.
