BITE
(including this fantastic art from @this-is-z-art-blog )
Danny decided very quickly that he really, really did not like the new kid.
Kade Johnson (“That’s such a white boy name,” Tucker had said, eyes rolling) had started in the middle of November. A senior with blonde hair and blue eyes that rivaled Dash’s good looks. Smart and athletic. A model student. Charismatic. Friendly. Off.
“He’s just sort of… weird,” Danny had told Sam over lunch.
She had glanced at the senior in question, varsity jacket slung over his shoulder, laughing with the rest of the basketball team. “Yeah, Danny. He’s a popular kid who’s going to peak in high school.”
Danny shook his head. “It’s more than that.”
“Danny, I promise it’s not,” Sam replied. “Unless he’s, y’know…” she wiggled her fingers at him, flinging a bit of pizza sauce his way, “ghostly?”
“No. He’s normal,” Danny sighed. Sam raised an eyebrow at him. Danny rolled his eyes. “He’s human, I mean.”
Tucker dumped an armful of vending machine snacks on their lunch table, settling in next to Danny. “He’s telling you about his conspiracies too?”
“They’re not-“
“Yeah, new kid’s evil and out to get us,” Sam replied.
Danny grabbed the Ruffles and ate them as petulantly as he could, glaring at his two dearest friends in the world. “He’s weird,” Danny insisted weakly, glancing over at the senior again.
Clear blue eyes stared back at him, alive and bright. Unsettling. Kade grinned at him, showing off too-white teeth. Danny thought he might puke.
Behavior
It had been nearly three weeks since Danny was able to sit at his seat. He didn’t even realize it was his seat until fucking Kade was there with impeccably clear skin and the vague hint of cologne hanging around him. Khakis (who wore nice pants to high school?) and a polo and his Varsity letter jacket. And Danny knew why he, a freshman, was in the Junior-level physics class - because he was fucking smart - but that didn’t explain why Kade, a senior, was in the Junior-level physics class - because Danny knew that Kade was also fucking smart. It was the only thing Jazz could talk about anymore.
And Danny was stuck staring at the back of Kade’s stupid head. Because Star had just given Danny’s seat away. Like “Lab Partners for Life” meant nothing to her. Every day Kade came in and sat down next to her and gave her a big grin. And Star gazed up at him adoringly and said “What do you think of my outfit today, Kade?” And Kade said “You look great, why don’t you sit next to me at lunch today?” Or “I don’t think that style suits you very well, sorry Star.” Or something equally weird and unrelated to physics. And Danny couldn’t see the whiteboard.
Danny had tried telling Tucker that Kade was weird. Tucker had put Danny’s cheeks between his hands and said “Hey, man. You can tell me if you’re gay. It’s okay.” And Danny said “You’re an ass, Tuck,” because Danny had already come out to him three years ago.
Danny had tried telling Sam. She’d said, “At least he’s gotten Dash to stop wearing those stupid ripped jeans. The khakis and polos are an improvement.” Which was true - all the A-listers wore exactly what Kade wanted them to. They probably shopped together.
At lunch Kade sat with the A-Listers of every grade. They all ate what he ate and sat where he asked them to. They all wore stupid matching friendship bracelets that were too bright. The charms hurt Danny’s eyes whenever they caught the light right, and they caught the light right all the time.
Danny hated that guy.
Information
Danny was always a little bit prepared for an attack during school. After it had happened so many times already, it would be foolish not to keep a Thermos in his bag and be on edge all of the damn time. But it had been less frequent lately. All the ghosts seemed to be quieting down. It was suspicious, but Danny had been trying to take advantage of the sleep while he could. Growing boy and all that. Unfortunately, dull headaches throbbed in his head and his nights were frustratingly sleepless.
So it follows naturally that Skulker shows up while Danny is nearly asleep in English. He isn’t even fully awake when he transforms in the bathroom, Thermos in hand and backpack discarded in the corner.
He manages to be wide awake when he makes it onto the football field and finds Skulker staring down Kwan, who - to his credit - is staring right back. Danny’s able to get a good shot in while Skulker is distracted, and the following fight is short and sweet and incredibly routine. Danny touches down next to Kwan once it’s over. “Hey, man. You’re supposed to run away from ghosts.”
Kwan grins at him, bright and full of teeth. “It’s fine, Phantom! See, I’ve got this!” He held up his wrist and Danny winced as the sun caught the charm just right and blinded him. Kwan sheepishly put his arm back down. “Sorry. It’s an anti-ghost charm.”
“It’s a what,” Danny said flatly, reaching for Kwan’s wrist again. He braced himself for the brightness, and squinted to examine the bracelet.
“An anti-ghost charm!” Kwan repeated. “See, there’s a new student - his name is Kade - and he’s a genius. He knows all about ghosts. The charm is a little locket, see, and inside is special ingredients.”
“What ingredients?” Danny asked, trying to open the container.
Kwan kicked at the dirt. “Well, I’m not really supposed to ask… I don’t know,” he admitted. “But Kade says if I keep doing well, I can learn one day! Kade’s great.”
Danny grunted, finally wiggling the locket open. “Is that hair?” he asked, pulling a little knot of it out. It looked just like the clumps of Jazz’s hair that he found on his laundry - definitely human hair. And a small pin, and a little thorn that pricked Danny’s finger. “What the fuck,” Danny breathed, shaking his hand out. He glanced up at Kwan, who looked devastated that Danny had opened the locket.
“Kade will be upset that I opened it,” Kwan said quietly, as though confiding a great secret. “I might not get to sit at the table during lunch.” Danny did his best not to roll his eyes. “He says they lose their magic when you open them.”
“Why?” Danny asked, shoving the items back into the container and shutting the clasp. “It’s just some garbage - it doesn’t even do anything.”
“Yes it does,” Kwan insisted, suddenly loud again. Danny dropped his hand. “Kade says so. He knows all about ghosts.”
“I am a ghost,” Danny reminded him.
“Ghosts are liars. Kade says a ghost will tell you anything you want to hear to get what they want.” He took a step back. “You could be lying right now. Maybe you aren’t even saving us from the ghosts, like Kade says. I shouldn’t even be talking to you. What if someone sees?”
Danny rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Kade can save you next time Skulker comes around if he’s so great.” He left before he could hear Kwan’s response.
Thought
Danny is only a little pleased to be paired with Paulina for English today. Sure, she’s a bit unbearable to be around, but she’s pretty, so it evens out. The sickly sweet smell of her perfume worsens his headache, but at least she isn’t wearing one of those damn charms.
She gives him a disinterested glance as he sits next to her, worksheet in hand. He tries not to be that offended. And then he is offended, he decides, because she’s got a picture of Kade sticking out of her notebook.
“Did you do yesterday’s reading?” Danny asked. He knew the answer.
“No, I was busy at Kade’s house,” Paulina replied, looking at him as though he was stupid for thinking she’d do her homework. “I’m in the inner circle.”
“So… the worksheet?” Danny said, hoping to redirect the conversation. “Lancer’s usually willing to fail us for not finishing before ghosts attack.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll keep you safe. Kade knows how to keep ghosts away. He knows everything. He’s protected the school so well!”
“I thought Phantom was protecting the school,” Danny said through gritted teeth.
Paulina tut-tutted at him. “No. Phantom is a ghost. Ghosts are evil,” she says, as though he is a child. “Kade tells us how to protect ourselves from ghosts. My perfume is ghost-repellant. And I do all of my meditations so that they can’t take over my mind. If you asked, Kade could help you too,” she added sweetly. “Your parents clearly don’t know anything about ghosts. Not like Kade.”
Danny recognized the insult for what it was, but Paulina also sounded genuine. She believed this nonsense. “Paulina, none of that works.” The perfume smelled bad, but it wasn’t repelling him. “How has he proven any of that works?”
“Um, it obviously works,” she replied. “Ghosts haven’t attacked the school in weeks, and even the attacks in town are stopping. That’s because of us. Kade is showing us how to protect the town, and soon… well, we won’t need Phantom ever again.”
She had a point. Ghost attacks were way down. Danny still felt like shit all the time, but at least he hadn’t needed to be doing vigilante business as well - he just thought he was finally winning. That after enough fights they’d stopped coming back. It made more sense than Paulina stopping the attacks, at least. “Paulina, Kade doesn’t have that kind of power. He’s just a guy.”
Paulina’s hand shot in the air. “Mr. Lancer, can I work by myself?” Lancer didn’t even look up from his monitor, just sighed and waved his hand in a ‘ do whatever’ motion. She turned back to him, angrier than Danny had ever seen her. “I don’t listen to unbelievers like you. I’m part of the inner circle.”
And then she was up and gone, seat vacated. Danny let his head thud onto the table. He also hadn’t done the reading. This worksheet was going to take him forever.
Emotion
It’s mid-March when Danny finally realizes that something is wrong with Dash. Early March is when Dash’s ‘spring cleaning’ starts, and everyone who looks at him wrong gets shoved in a locker (at best) or a toilet (at worst). But Danny - despite being sleep-deprived, achey, and nauseous - has been snarking at him constantly for weeks, and hasn’t been shoved anywhere. His hair is blessedly free of toilet water. And Dash is wearing khakis and polos and he wears that stupid bracelet.
“I thought you’d be glad he stopped his brutishness,” Sam said when he brought it up. “I really think you need to see a doctor, Danny.”
Tucker hadn’t even tried listening to him. “You haven’t slept well in months, man. Of course you’re paranoid.” The kindness in his eyes made Danny want to hurl. Danny was the protector, not the protected.
He was on his own.
Which is why he nearly let out a breath of relief when Dash cornered him in the near-empty locker room after gym. The remaining boys cleared out quickly, leaving Danny and Dash alone. Finally, a fight. Ghosts hadn’t been seen in weeks. Danny felt more deathly than ever.
“Hey, uh, Fenton,” Dash started, and Danny froze. Was this not a fight?
“Baxter,” Danny replied coolly. “Come for spring cleaning?”
Dash looked scared, and Danny didn’t understand anything that was happening. “No. I wanted to apologize for my past behavior. It was juvenile, and will not be repeated.”
“Those are some pretty big words,” Danny says, and he can see the conflict in Dash’s eyes: to punch or not to punch? That is the question.
Dash takes a deep breath and sticks his hand out between them. “I apologize for my past behavior,” he repeats. Danny lets this hang between them, too.
“No,” Danny says. “Dude, what? Glad you cleared your conscience, but I’m not going to shake your hand and say we’re fine.”
“You have to,” Dash pleaded. “Everyone else did.”
“Yeah, man! Of course they did! You beat the shit out of us all the time!”
“I used to beat the shit of you all the time.”
“Dash, what is going on?” Danny asks, dropping his volume down.
Dash shifts uncomfortably. He mumbles something into the air dividing them, but Danny can’t quite catch it. He stays silent, waiting for Dash to break first. It only takes a moment. “Kade is going to save some of us. I’m supposed to be free of grudges or the negative emotions will cause the process to go wrong. I’ve been having extra one-on-one sessions,” Dash explains. “Kade says if I’m forgiven it’ll go well. Then we’ll all be okay. So you have to forgive me.”
“Dash, none of that makes any sense.”
“Well it’s not my fault you’re not in the inner circle. Maybe if you weren’t such a loser you’d be able to be saved too.”
“You’re so good at not continuing your past behavior,” Danny replies, and is almost glad for the cold bite of the locker on his back when Dash slams him into it.
“I am going to go to Kade’s. He is going to make it so I can’t die, and then we will make it so the whole town is safe and the ghosts won’t be able to touch us. Kade can cut us off from death! He’s done it before! So you’re going to forgive me and I’m gonna be a hero.” Dash’s eyes were bright and alive and sickening to look into.
Danny didn’t know what to say to that. So he didn’t say anything, and got shoved in a locker.
Control
“I hate being right all the time,” Danny mutters to himself. He shuffles through a couple more papers on Kade’s desk, and then phases through the ceiling. The easiest realization was ‘Kade is leading a cult’. Next step was to visit Kade’s house by following him home from school. Thankfully, Kade was the kind of evil genius who left his plans out on his desk.
Gather recruits. Help guide them towards salvation. Cut off the town from the Ghost Zone. Be hailed as a savior.
The problem was this: Danny knew intimately that life and death were in balance. You couldn’t have one without the other. Kade had been leaching energy off of his fellow students to begin the process. Danny was being slowly cut off from death (explaining the headaches and the nausea and the bone-deep exhaustion). The whole town was. Of course there’d been less ghost attacks. Danny had been right to be suspicious. Amity Park’s veil was razor-thin, and this separation would probably cause it to implode spectacularly.
“I was so hoping you’d be here.”
Danny turns and sees Kade, eyes bright and alive and smile full of too-white teeth. “Here I am,” Danny says, spreading his arms open dramatically.
“Here you are!” Kade says. “The ghost boy himself! Are you here to foil my plans?” He asks it as though it is an inside joke, as though they are old friends. “Shall I give you my monologue?”
Danny settles. Gives the illusion of complacency. Shrugs. “Yeah, if that’s what you want to do with your day.”
“I am always searching for souls seeking redemption,” Kade replies, spreading his arms wide. “Daniel, I am a visionary. I am alive. I have removed all traces of death from myself. It cannot touch me.”
That last bit may have been true; being in the room with him was dizzying. Agitating. Looking at his face felt sickening.
“I could tell you all the details, but here are the highlights. I have saved my soul, made myself more alive than anyone has ever been. It was simple and bloody, but now I know how to save everyone.”
“If you upset the balance, everything will collapse in on itself. By separating them you’ll bring them closer together. Like a rubber band, y’know?”
Kade tuts at him. “What will you do, ghost? Stop me?”
“It’s what I do,” Danny shrugs, and prepares for a fight.
The fight doesn’t come; it never even starts. Kade is untouchable; the ectoblasts and wails just wash over him like a wave breaking on stone. Kade is grinning. His teeth are too white and his eyes are bright and Danny is tired.
“I told you, I cannot be touched by death,” Kade reminds him.
Danny is the world; he is balanced. He returns to life and lands a well-placed sucker punch. Kade hadn’t been expecting that, and soon enough they were tumbling on the ground. It’s been a while since Danny was in a fight, but it returns to him easily. His knuckles are bleeding. He is winning. “What are you?” Danny asks through bloody teeth. “You aren’t a ghost.”
“I am to life what a ghost is to death,” Kade hisses from the floor. “And you are an abomination.”
“Dude. That’s rude,” Danny replies.
Danny has spent years avoiding Dash Baxter, so when he hears those familiar footfalls in the hallway, he transforms. He lets Kade push him away. He makes sure Dash and Paulina have a good view of Kade, beaten and bloody, and Phantom looming over him. Kade pushes himself up off the floor, his “anti-ghost” charm swinging wildly off his bracelet as he attempts to steady himself.
He uses his best Superhero voice. “This evil-doer was attempting to upset the balance of forces sustaining the world. He intended to cause the apocalypse.” The apocalypse bit was a lie, but they wouldn’t know that. Danny gave them a thumbs up. He disappeared.
Sam and Tucker weren’t that impressed when he told them about it.
“Cults are small potatoes,” Sam says wisely.
“It wasn’t even a real cult, it was a high schooler with an entourage,” Tucker adds.
“He was a supernatural entity that wanted to destroy the world,” Danny argues.
Sam nods. “Yeah. Small potatoes.”
“I’m just glad you finally got some sleep, buddy,” Tucker says, swinging an arm around Danny’s shoulders.

The Stars, The Moon, The Sun, and an Incoming Constellation
A DP x DC x Tfrb fic - also posted on my Ao3 Agentsquirrel
After marrying Danny and getting engaged to Tucker, Sam packs up the trio and heads to Griffin Rock, a place that is rumored to be just as chaotic as Amity Park.
Of course, the Fenton luck follows them, and the three of them find out their family will soon become bigger than they thought.
"Shots fired at the dock! Dad, be careful!" Cody said, his voice shaking with worry.
"I promise, all protocol will be followed to the letter." Chase said, speeding towards the dock, Blades flying overhead.
They parked, and immediately, Charlie knew they were in over their head. A white goth woman no older than Dani was pinned behind a cement parking barrier, her forehead grazed and her forearm shot right through the skin, missing bone but severing muscle. She was oddly calm though, her body language free of shock as she kept pressure on her wound and watched the battle with rapt concentration.
"Danny, love, quit being cocky and wrap this up. The police are here, and Tuck's gotta scram." She said into her flip phone, the thing absolutely ancient compared to the cell phone, this year's model, shoved in her steel toed boot.
"Chase, I can't see anything! Whatever is opening fire is just a green blur!" Blades was bordering on a full on panic, Dani fully in control.
"It looks like a fight between a gang trying to set up shop and whatever that green blur is. Stay back dad, looks like it can fly fast." Dani said, retreating from the fight after scanning for civilians. The situation seemed to be resolving itself without them.
"Miss, do you require medical attention?" Charlie yelled over the sounds of gunfire.
"I'm fine, my partner needs to HURRY THE FUCK UP!"
With one last final blast, a white, blue eyed, black haired boy ran from the scene and behind Chase, his sneakers soaked in blood and a green substance Charlie hoped was paint.
"I got trapped between that… thing and the shootout. I don't know what I stepped in, but I think it's all blood." He said, panting hard, his face and arms cut up from debris. "My name is Danny Mason. That's my wife Sam. I'm a medic, got a first aid kit on you?" Charlie handed it over, and on a whispered count of three, he dashed over to his wife, quickly applying a tourniquet and dragging her towards the squad car. "Tuck's fine, is at the hotel. After we give a statement, I am taking you to the hospital."
"Wait." Graham said over comms Daniel and Sam Mason-Foley, with their fiance Tucker? Like, Mason industries, and Foley computer systems? Dad, half the island buys their tech, its the most repairable, environmentally sustainable, and secure software and computer companies on the market, and a flagship brand against planned obsolescence. Please, play nice. This could legitimately be huge for the island."
"Noted. Kade, you too."
Kade sighed. "Got it. Be nice to the Luskey Jrs."
"Do you need a ride? I can follow up on a statement later. I can have you flown to the mainland for a checkup or let you call for a ride."
"It's not-" Sam started, wincing as Danny cleaned her head wound.
"We will take that flight. I don't like the look of her head wound, and I am no good at stitches."
"First, call Tucker, so he can rub it in our faces." Sam said, hissing as Dani caught up to them and started redressing her wounds, Chase and Charlie clearing the area, Charlie trying not to vomit at the sight of the finely pureed gangster decorating multiple shipping containers and an overturned forklift.
"Well, this is… unpleasant." Chase said, wrinkling his nose at the smell.
In the background, Blades flew towards the mainland, very glad he wasn't on clean-up duty.
"Hey, there's my moon and stars!" Tucker said, dropping his duffel bag on a spare chair before resting a hand on Danny's shoulder and kissing Sam's cheek.
"Only if you are the sun." Sam said, a little loopy from the pain medication, the hospital keeping her under observation for a few more hours.
The nurse came in, oddly nervous, holding a box. "So, I have some news. Sirs, could I ask Mrs. Mason a question in private? Hospital policy, it will only take a minute."
"Oh." Danny said, suddenly concerned. "Sure. Be back soon, Sam. Love you."
"Love you too." Sam replied as Tucker and Danny awkwardly shuffled out of the hospital room.
The nurse watched them leave, then took a deep breath. "It's hospital policy to for this to be private. There's a few questions I have to ask first, but…" She opened the box. Inside, there was a positive pregnancy test, in a sanitary box, and some paperwork.
Sam looked shocked, covering her mouth and choking back a squeal. "I'm pregnant." She whispered. "I thought that. Could you bring my partners in?"
"Of course, but I have to ask a couple of questions before it, standard stuff."
"Oh. OK."
"First I have to give you this." The nurse gave Sam a couple of business cards with referrals to maternity resources, domestic violence hotlines, and reproductive care information. "Nothing personal, we give them to all patients with positive tests. In the same vein, have you experienced any threats of violence, acts of violence, coercion, or felt that your right to consent has been violated by chosen partners, friends, ex partners, or family members?"
"No."
"Would you like or have the need for confidential referrals to counseling on your pregnancy, either by our support counselors or religious clergy?"
"No."
"Would you like to keep the test?"
Sam smiled. "Yes. Could you bring my partners in?"
The nurse nodded, and closed up the box with the test inside. "In the box is the same forms and resources in writing, and some other paperwork. Congratulations."
"Thank you." Sam said, wiping away a few tears.
Tucker and Danny rushed back into the room, their voices overlapping with worry.
"Guys, enough. Open the box." Sam said, offering it to Danny.
Danny ripped it open, throwing the top aside. He dropped it in shock. "I'm…I'm…"
Tucker gasped, a huge grin on his face. "We are gonna be dads!" He yelled, rushing to hug Sam while shaking with excitement.
"I didn't know I could…" Danny said, obviously in shock.
"Danny, DANNY!" Sam yelled, snapping him out of his trance. "I demand attention for my sacrifice."
"Oh!" Danny squeaked, jumping into action. He gave Sam a peck on the cheek before grabbing her hand and flopping into one of the chairs. "We gotta call Jazzy."
"No, duh, but first, I want you two." Sam grumped, returning Danny's kiss. "I already have names for 'em." She said, resting her head on Danny's shoulder while Tucker was already looking up all the latest baby gear and thinking up his own.
"If it's Danny's bio kid, then it's gonna be Cassiopeia or Orion. If it's Tucker's bio kid, it's either Sadie or Orion. My selections are final and not up for debate."
"Yes, ma'am." Danny and Tucker intoned, only half joking. Sam's word was law, after all.
Danny counted backward in his head and gasped. "Uh, Sam. Who's gonna tell your parents that this one's probably mine?"
"Not it!" Danny and Tucker yelled, Sam catching on too late.
"Fuck." Sam hissed.
Danny chuckled. "Apparently, we are quite good at that." He earned a tug on the ear for that comment. "Ow. I deserved that."
Tucker did the math too. "Yep. First one is likely gonna be… no, wait, Danny failed math, we have got a fifty-fifty shot here."
"Meh. Doesn't mean much to me. I am bad at doing hair anyway." Sam said, only half joking.

Synopsis and trope reveal for Shadows of the Night by @charlizekkelly
Coming out October 31st (preorder link at bottom of post)
“Nothing good ever came without sacrifice. Some of us just found clarity in the darkness of those shadows.”
Nyx Monroe grew up with terrifying tales of golden-eyed beasts with nightmarish fangs and murderous tendencies but as time passed, she forgot about them, convinced they were just scary stories. When her father, Azeil Monroe, is hired to privately investigate the murders plaguing the coastal city of Celacali, it’s a chance at a fresh start.
However, Nyx discovers everything is not what it seems beneath the veneer of the popular tourist location, also known as the City of the Dead. Something dark resides there—death and carnage reincarnate.
Plunged into the city’s shadows, Nyx stumbles into the open arms of notorious Orion, Kotori, Niko, and Kade—the boardwalk is their blood-stained domain.
They’ve been waiting for twenty-five years to exact their revenge for a debt long overdue, luring Nyx and her father back to where it all began. Whilst they distract Azeil with one murder case after the other, their focus shifts to Nyx.
Soon, there’s nowhere left for her to run—to hide—from the true beasts of legend, or from the darkness of her past.

The Hostage
A dp x DC + transformers Rescue Bots fanfic (hear me out, I have written this combo before)
Tw: abduction, mentioned sex work (Kade makes an assumption), discussion of pedophilia and rape revenge (Jason assumes the worst of Morocco)
Charlie felt helpless when he made the call on the burner phone.
Morocco was back, and this time, he had stolen Cody right out from under them in the middle of the night, not a single lead in sight except a bad feeling cultivated by decades as a police officer in Gotham.
This case could get cold fast, and using the bots would just make Morocco move Cody more.
There was a rumor going around, of a two man hitman team that specializes in cases involving children, and he had contacts to the Police Commissioner. After giving him a call, he gave Charlie a code and a website, telling him that these two were legitimate hitmen and to tell them about Cody first.
"Are you Jason?" Charlie asked.
"Maybe. Why and how did you get this number."
"Police Commissioner Gordon gave it to me. My son has been kidnapped. We know who took him but I can't go after him."
"Your name?"
"Charlie Burns." Charlie heard the clicking of a keyboard.
"You're a cop."
"One who wants Thaddeus Morocco dead." Charlie said. "This call is on a secure burner phone, and I have a burn box out back waiting for it. I know you have a five thousand dollar price tag, with multiple accepted ways of payment. I am taking the third option. Five thousand dollars in a secure money transfer, paid in full before my son turns eighteen. He is eleven now, and I can get that in a month's time."
"Fee's a deterrent for people not willing to commit. This case is personal. Meet me outside the Hall of Inspiration in two days. I have to drive up from Jersey." The line went dead, and Charlie reminded himself that this was for the greater good. Even Chase had agreed that this was a risk that they had to take.
Morocco had gone too far.
Charlie was surprised that they were so young. The attractive redhead climbed into Chase's backseat, and after the black haired, blue-eyed man put a duffel bag and suitcase into Chase's truck, he slid in the seat next to her and wrapped his arm around her waist.
They drove back to the firehouse in silence.
Once they got there, the woman patted Chase's side doors. "No need to hide from us. I can feel your core from a mile away. You aren't from around here, and neither are the rest of the vehicles in this room."
Chase popped up on the dashboard. "How? I didn't speak."
"My brother wasn't completely human either. I learned how to spot other worldly shit at a young age. Since I know your secret, here's ours. My name is Jazz, and my partner here is Jason."
"I am Chase. The fire truck is Heatwave, the helicopter is Blades, and the bulldozer is Boulder."
"You said the missing boy is eleven? Is there anything that we should know about his connection to Morocco?" Jason said, taking out the bags and setting the duffel on a folding table and handing the suitcase to Jazz.
Jazz set it on the red couch and opened it. It was filled with various knives, tasers, and an array of clothes, from skimpy dresses to a formal suit. "Hey, does anyone have a rough idea of what this guy's into? Women, men, both, neither?"
"I don't see how that is useful." Charlie said, picking up Cody's jacket and clutching it tightly.
"We don't have time to discuss this, I just need the answers if you have them. Every second that kid is in that bastard's hands, he could escalate to, well, joining a registry."
Charlie's eyes went wide. "You think he could be will to ... touch him?"
"I don't think so, but here's the policy we work from." Jazz looked up from the spread of dresses. "Hey Jason, what's the first assumption to make in this line of work?"
"Everyone's a pedophile!" Jason yelled from the other side of the room, laying out his weapons. He turned to Heatwave. "Makes things simpler for us. I would rather be pleasantly surprised than unprepared to face it."
"Makes sense. I imagine you do a lot of revenge killings. Technically, I shouldn't condone it, but where we come from, we don't let rapists walk."
"Well, that's something I agree on." Jason surveyed the rifle and various handguns he had brought with him.
"The rifle is too much. My usual load out, then." He strapped on his gun holsters, then inspected each gun. He set one aside. "We don't have time for me to fiddle with 'em. I don't trust this one. Charlie, bring your service weapon and taser. If neither have been serviced or used in more than a few weeks, just take one of mine. Jazz, you are gonna be down a gun. Are the knives enough?"
"Probably. He's a tech guy. No grunts, so EMPs and c4 are on the table."
"No c4. EMPs will have to work, and we aren't going to be bringing the tin cans with us."
"Why not?" Heatwave said.
"Cause this ain't the time for a smash n' grab. We are using stealth. The plan is whoever is closest gets the kid, and the other one puts Morocco down. We will take care of the body. You guys stick out like a sore thumb."
"That's it?" Blades said incredulously. "That's the plan?"
"Anything more complicated than that is doomed to fail. Jazz, have ya made your choice?"
"Don't think it's gonna work. He's the wrong kind of scumbag."
"So just kill him?"
"Yep. Jazz, get your stuff. Burns, I want none of you near that part of the island until we leave. We won't have to worry about police involvement, but people talk. Stay here, and work as if it was a regular night. Send some emails, post on social media, and don't be afraid to leave timestamps as you go. We will be back."
Jason was seething under the surface, but he had to pretend to be calm. He and Jazz climbed into their rental car, stashed at an abandoned house, and drove up to the lab.
Morocco wasn't even hard to get to.
The EMP wiped out all his defenses, and he didn't even have a gun on him. Jason spoke first. "Stage it like a suicide. Use the knives from the kitchen." Jazz nodded, and Jason left to find Cody.
Jason found him downstairs. He was obviously drugged, thrown in a little girl's bedroom, laying on the bed and staring at nothing. He was conscious, at least, and thankfully, appeared unharmed.
Jason called Charlie's burner phone. "Cody's alive, but the bastard drugged him. He's too docile, and the drugs seem to be working their way throughhis system without issue, but he might not remember much."
"Dani will airlift him once you get back to the firehouse."
Jason tossed Cody over his shoulder. "Jazz! Time to go!"
Jazz took off her gloves and stuffed them into a burlap sack that they were going to burn later.
As soon as they got back to the firehouse, Dani checked Cody over and then bundled him into Blades. She couldn't tell by his symptoms what he had been drugged with.
Jason and Jazz watched them leave, then collected their things and left without a word.
Charlie wasn't surprised when news of a burning car found in an abandoned parking lot was featured in the morning paper, along with Morocco's apparent suicide. Mayor Luskey found him that evening.

NOW WITH ART! AMAZING SHORT COMIC BY PAPS
One day, a woman hires Jason to kill an unusual amount of people. The more he looks at the case, the more he is convinced he has to accept.
“I want them gone.” She had said with a straight face. “All of them have to die.”

notes:
This is set after the events of Lost Days and before he goes to Gotham to do Under the Red Hood stuff. I’m playing with timeline like a kid with building blocks. Any needed context is added in the story.
I know Dick killed the Joker because of Jason’s death. I KNOW. But Jason here doesn’t know. Don’t come at me in the replies.
There is no ship content per say, but is hinted in the future.

Jason looked up from the closed manila folder and glanced at the quiet figure of his new potential employer.
Caitlyn Williams.
It was a fake name, he suspected. If the black wig wasn’t enough of a clue about the fishiness of the situation, the way she omitted parts of her explanation, redirected his questions or provided just the basic information he would need for the hit was another big red flag.
Jason could work with this. It wasn’t as if he had the moral high ground here - he was living with a fake identity given that Jason Todd was dead and theoretically buried six feet under. Not even Bruce knew he was alive, but he had plans to remedy that.
In the meantime, he was trying to get some extra money since wouldn’t have Talia’s wealth forever and he had to eventually leave the nest, so to speak; and until he had a stable income he had to do small hit jobs like this one.
What this woman wanted wasn’t small, though.
“I want them gone.” She had said with a straight face. “All of them have to die.”

last time I heavily played SW:TOR, the level cap was 50. I was playing in a dedicated 4-person group with my dad, then-boyfriend (now husband), and sister, and even with us doing every heroic quest together (because you needed a group for them, back then, or they were impossible) and every flashpoint, we still were consistently in the planet’s listed level range.
I just hit 50 on Ves. I’m on Alderaan. I’m still in Act 1 of her story.
This is not a complaint. As someone who predominately plays solo and keeps really weird hours, I am overjoyed that it’s no longer impossible to play on my own :)
#ves is now only the second character I've ever gotten this high of level!#I've been to... act 2 on the trooper but not very far into it#my last level 50 was kade my bounty hunter#I was our team's ranged dps! because it's what I'm best at and because I wanted to be a mando#it's a lot of fun coming back to the game after so many years and seeing all the way things have changed#definitely changed for the better#maybe I will like balmorra this time! maybe I can play imperial without seething in rage the entire time I'm on dromund kaas!

Conversation
Todd: I've never actually been in a snowball fight.
Neil: Really?
Todd: I don't even know the rules. Is there, like, a point system, or is it to the death?
