Lingthusiasm Episode 80: Word Magic

The magical kind of spell and the written kind of spell are historically linked. This reflects how saying a word can change the state of the world, both in terms of fictional magic spells that set things on fire or make them invisible, and in terms of the real-world linguistic concept of performative utterances, which let us agree to contracts, place bets, establish names, and otherwise alter the fabric of our relationships.

In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about word magic! We talk about how the word magic systems are set up differently in three recent fantasy books we like: Babel by R.F. Kuang, Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, and the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik. We also talk about linguistic performatives: why saying “I do” in a movie doesn’t make you married, aka Felicity Conditions, aka an excellent drag name; performativity as applied to gender (yup, Judith Butler got it from linguistics); the “hereby” test; and how technology changes what counts as a performative.

Since I decided the best way to make it through Our Skyy 2 with minimal damage is to drink my way through it, welcome to the seventh round of

This week's drink is TWO drinks because we have a crossover! I have The Colors Mean Things for the first day of Pride

and Sleigh What?:

Prosecco because all I hear is Jessie Ware's "Champagne Kisses" when I see Pat and Pran

coconut water for episode 11's cake by the ocean (sex on the beach)

mint for that refreshing Pran smell that Pat loves

Christmas glass because it feels like Christmas getting this crossover and never forget Pat was shot on Christmas Eve!

I rushed home to watch these because I already know too much about these episodes, yet still understand nothing at all. Let's get drunk, sluts!

Pat gave in too easily. Like at least make Pran state the reasons they deserve the space.

Why would Korn be downloading porn? Do people still do that? Seems very old school when we can simply stream it at our convenience.

I don't like that Pran is smiling as porn is showing on the screen while his boyfriend is going up in flames, then telling Pat the porn wasn't the issue. My man, it was definitely the porn.

This discussion about being creative is for some of y'all who don't see that the colors mean things, and instead simply see a red shirt. Too logical.

A quick warning about intellectual property. I appreciate it.

With that tent, this could've been a Not Me crossover.

I don't know if he really said "honeymoon" or that was just the translation, but that shit was cute.

They all know Pat is still with Pran! I love that he doesn't have to lie to them.

What a dumb joke about only an elevator can take him down. I love Pat the most.

Wait, it might be the drink(s), but Korn said they had to mislead Pat to get him out of the house away from his boyfriend, but now they are all saying Pat and Pran aren't boyfriends. ¿Cómo?

Ouch. I'm not feeling this episode the way some of y'all are feeling it. This kinda hurts, y'all. It feels mean. And not just what Pat said, but also the way Pran overly reacts to it by leaving Pat behind.

Can you imagine the bachelor party if this was just a normal night with the guys?

Y'ALL! I'm upset. Pat wanted another honeymoon, but Pran left him behind. I know Pran has some blame here, but . . . I don't know.

About 4-5 hours, IF you don't get LOST! That's why we use the buddy system, Pran!

Pran is so lucky this is a kind BL because getting into a car in the middle of nowhere would end differently in another show.

Yod apologizing for things beyond his control is why he is a GOOD MAN!

Tian was young too! He just had a heart condition! Why do they keep trying to age EarthMix up so much?!

"Are you going to beat me with that?" YOD, I LOVE YOU!

THE REVEALS WERE PERFECT!

I already have the second drink on deck! ON TO A TALE OF THOUSAND STARS!

Phupha is down yet Tian is death staring Pran and asking "What business do you have with my man?"

"Drink some water!" - I feel every episode knows what shenanigans I'm up to and is directly speaking to me.

Pran's presence interrupted their fight, so now Tian death stares again but this time asking "What business do you have with me?" Tian is done with Pran before he even started.

Oh, shit! They are really fighting!

I LOVE THIS!!!!!! Tian is so pissed!

"Faen! Faen! Faen! Faen!" Tian is going to murder Pran, and let that serve as a reminder why we don't leave our buddy Pat behind!

"KAMPUNG!" - These are public education teacher problems front and center on full display.

Phupha won't see Tian's parents?! Homie, the dad hired you to follow his son around. You're already family!

The dialogue keeps delivering. Pat and Pran's "Hey, girl, hey" was so aggressive and filled with tension.

Tian clocks the gays, while Phupha is fully invested in the meal.

Earth and Mix serve FACE so well! Just pure rage brewing under there.

I don't want them fighting, but golly I sure do love it! "Did my dad tell you to sleep with me too?! NAH! Didn't think so!"

I like that Pat was only there for support and kept looking to Pran when shit was going down. That's a good boyfriend!

Yod throwing out all the business! "Sometimes Tian sleeps here, sometimes Tian sleeps there, and sometimes he threatens to never come back. Oh, and don't need anything from me. I ain't helping you."

This is now turning into an appreciation post for this script because it's fire! "Help me by SHUTTING UP!"

PAT, WHY ARE YOU SABOTAGING THIS, BABE?!

Ohm , I did not expect that body since you slimmed down! Force, Pond, Neo, and Ohm. Do y'all work out together?!

This argument is really the fans arguing about who fell first and who fell harder. Listen, all I care about is that they BOTH FELL AND CAN'T GET BACK UP!

Earth and Mix looked warm last time, but Mile and Apo had to freeze and so do Nanon and Ohm. These poor men and these freezing waterfalls.

Pat asking the questions that matter - "When did you see the Chief's body, Pran?!" Pat has his priorities straight.

It's 64 degrees, so Pat has the right idea. Physical activities help you stay warm.

Kampung is a hustler. I love little hustlers.

Pat called Pran his boyfriend in front of all these strangers!

Neung and Tian throwing themselves at Palm and Phupha, and admitting it keeps me hydrated.

"Set up the mosquito tent" is code for sexual activities. *pushes my glasses up on my nose*

Head empty. Just Phupha glaring at a smiling Pat. NOW KISS!

Drunk Tian is accurate. My friends feel the most empowered and want to go on long journeys to dangerous places when they have been drinking. Dumb, but accurate.

Phupha and Pat waking up together. YES!

Earth and his tattoos are my favorite I SPY adventure.

Oh, thank goodness, Tian and Pran didn't fall!

Phupha looks worried pissed and Pat looks worried scared. Phupha is gonna find Tian and yell, but Pat is gonna find Pran and cry. Hopefully this journey will teach ALL of them a lesson, and Pran says he is sorry and so does Phupha because the same boys (Tian and Pat) can't keep apologizing.

I can't properly rate this since it's not done, but I'm gonna be honest and admit that I don't care who gets to put on the play because I'm solely here for the Grinch and his husband, Phupha and Tian.

But so far, the drinks were great and the episodes were better.

Okay, the payback from Keen to Captain that we see in the preview of episode 12 is one of the absolute best in terms of Keen's and Captain's characters.

It's perfect.

Because throughout the series, every time we've waited and wanted to shake Captain, he's been absolutely resistant to education, holding on to his messed up sex clips.

Learning effect = zero, nothing. Nada.

Even at the beginning with the clip of Zouey as a girl, Puen had told him already that this is unacceptable. Captain didn't care, he didn't even begin to understand the seriousness of the situation (and that he literally commited a fucking crime). And it only got worse from there.

The sex clips strained his relationship with his own friends, with Zouey, but he didn't care because he always got it straightened out somehow. The real consequence never affected him directly; sure, some people were angry with him, but time heals all wounds, right?

Zouey forgave him, Puen and he didn't talk much anymore anyway, so all the problems almost took care of themselves as long as Captain just ignored them and gave them time.

And Keen knows that.

For Keen, whom Captain claims to actually love him so much, Captain did the bare minimum, namely deleting the clips, but only when he was found out and the confrontation could no longer be avoided.

Not out of love for Keen, not because he realized the wrongs in his actions.

Captain witnessed ruining Tutor's career and did NOTHING. Not a single ounce of reflection or "Fuck, this could happen to the person I love the most."

Captains little hobby went unpunished for so long that he made it part of his normal life, not a crime, rather something slightly gray area stuff like downloading music. I am having troubles to put in words how unbothered Captain feels about it and how obscured and wrong his view of reality is.

Now if Keen really did send the clip of him and Captain having sex while Keen is wearing his former coach's uniform to the university, kudos, that's perfect.

Because now Captain can't look away, he can no longer ignore it. All the many problems that he has smiled about, that he didn't care about, will now catch up with him.

If no reflection is possible by watching and relating his behavior to the situation, the distance must be taken from him.

This is exactly what Keen did.

Captain can't bullshit his way out of this.

Miller’s Actually-She’s-Eighteen

Pithy Letterboxd-style review (read: attempted virality): They finally made a movie adaptation of the YA-obsessed adult’s idea of what adult literature is.

You might get the impression a movie about an inappropriate student-teacher relationship that opens with the line “What is an adult?” and ends with Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” is some kind of self-aware parody or satire. While Jade Halley Bartlett’s Miller’s Girl (2024) certainly has moments of what might generously be called “clarity” (re. subjects like writing and sexual dynamics)—more tortuously: “quasi-didactic”—it feels more or less like a straightforward, even predictable telling of this kind of story. (Or, in an era of excessive self-awareness—“He’s Right Behind Me, Isn’t He?”—maybe this is the radical approach.) I found the film’s tone fascinating, however. There are fleeting notes of horror in the visuals and soundscape, and then there’s stuff that feels artlessly moving or wistful or romantic. It strikes me as, overall, not at all the “slick” sort of movie where I should be seeing pop-ups highlighting messages from people’s cellphones, but there they are.

Similarly, the dialogue is a mix of the sort of awkward, “unrealistic,” strained, “literary” style that I personally enjoy with an occasional frankness or even crassness that borders on parody again by virtue of its extreme contrast. Here are several examples, all taken from throughout the same scene:

“I’m smokin’ now. No plans for it to define me yet.”

“It becomes a conversation about achieving emancipation from your inherited beliefs about sex and age.”

“We’re like the fuckin’ American wet dream. Young girls with ambivalent sexuality.”

“I don’t wanna drop it for some rando jock-twat whose sexual standards are mandated by the shit porn he downloads. That’s deli meat.”

“No, you’re being… Shut up.”

The highest compliment I can pay Miller’s Girl is that I did pause it early on to Google and find out if it was based on a book. I also think it’s risky to write a movie about writing and then have a bunch of characters’ writing shared in it, as the danger is that the audience won’t agree that the work is actually that great. This is obviously a matter of personal taste. As I mentioned before, I… liked it, but the writing uniformly has a tendency toward being “verbose” more than anything else, coming off like the characters are constantly deep-throating a thesaurus. It’s what a lot of people could (justifiably) call pretentious.

Obviously, there’s the question of the movie’s Content: As someone who has worked in education, I always respond negatively to bad teachers in art more or less as a matter of reflex. I recently finished re-watching season one of the 2015 comedy-horror series Scream Queens, for example, and one of the characters has a father who teaches a truly abysmal film class in certain episodes, which seems to consist of him just showing the students movies and then lecturing for a few minutes afterward. In Miller’s Girl, the issue is less how Martin Freeman’s titular Miller teaches and more about the mistakes he makes in handling Jenna Ortega’s precocious Cairo Sweet. It’s a necessary conceit of such stories that the teacher behaves in a way that lets those boundaries ultimately get crossed, but it’s hard not to watch those “slips” happen and not feel like this guy is just terrible at his job, with no sense of propriety whatsoever. Although, obviously this does happen for real. I went to school with someone who ended up crossing that line as a teacher, in fact.

The resonance I feel with stories like this one and also with the way weirdos on the internet talk about girls/women, the age of consent, fertility, birth rates, and so on is just how young people this age actually look. In contrast to the famously skeevy line from Dazed and Confused (1993), teenagers don’t “stay the same age”—I keep getting older, and they keep getting younger. I didn’t know how young I actually was at eighteen when I was eighteen. This here is meant to be a Heightened reality, where predatory teenagers who rattle around alone in their Southern Gothic houses emerge from the mist of the spooky woods to seduce you, but it’s hard for me not to see this Cairo as a flimsy phantasm, this schemer who seduces and then ruins her teacher so that she can write a really bangin’ application essay for Yale about the experience. She’s a sort of mythological figure in a Culture War, MGTOW, incel-ian mode—handled here with a certain ambivalence and enthralling grace even as the film technically panders to boring, old cishet male fears of entrapment and exploitation and degradation at the hands of wily Females.

It's another area where the film threatens to fall into parody—that and how it’s not just Cairo, but also her friend Winnie (Gideon Adlon) doing this. They’re both seducing teachers, but Winnie maybe genuinely likes hers and ends up falling out with Cairo in the end over it. The whiplash of Winnie’s transformation from short-skirted bisexual seductress to frumpy, teary-eyed defeat is also pretty comedic. Meanwhile, the mirrored pairing of Mr. Miller and his friend Boris (Bashir Salahuddin), Winnie’s target, further feeds into that sense of ridiculous excess. Boris’ ultimate rationalization of his own behavior is perhaps frustratingly brief, though intriguing for its moral ambiguity. Again, though, the fact that this is happening twice in the same school, simultaneously, with people this closely connected to one another, feels almost like unintentional comedy.

I’m sure Seth Rogen is a consummate professional, but knowing that he was a producer on this movie made me really want a commentary track from him, or to be a fly on the wall when he read the script. Like, I can just imagine his reaction to the scene where Mr. Miller is whackin’ it to Cairo’s midterm short story in what amounts to a shed. I thought it was pretty funny! I partly blame the “Peterotica” episode of Family Guy for me having this impression, however: You could just not take your shirt off while driving! You could simply not jork it to your student’s writing! That these reactions seem so… involuntary is part of what makes me laugh. Miller dramatically cranking hog does strike an ok balance between eroticism and thrills, I feel, and I don’t want to only disparage it. This is probably the stylistic—erotic and thrilling—high point of the movie. One criticism that could be levied against Miller’s Girl is that there isn’t actually enough of this sort of thing. It’s a real “Yes, and what else?” sort of deal.

Miller’s more successful writer wife, Beatrice (Dagmara Domińczyk), is a frustrating element of the story because of just how off-putting she is. She’s often demeaning toward her husband and only seems more drunk and belligerent as the story goes on. She’s meant to contrast with Cairo, obviously: The younger girl is sweet, whereas Beatrice is not. She lounges around the house in sexy sleepwear, and she’s not not into the story Cairo wrote when Miller shares it with her, which is… problematic. While Cairo is clearly antagonistic after a point and isn’t meant to represent a real option for several reasons (her age, her sort-of madness), the film doesn’t make staying with Beatrice feel like much of a viable choice either. It reminded me of a similar issue that I had with Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (2011). The fiancée in that film is so obviously a bad match (and person) that there’s not much tension where the question of staying with her is concerned. I think if Beatrice was just a skosh less aggressively dismissive of Miller, then it would make this situation more thrilling.

The film is perhaps surprisingly slight: Not much really happens, and I think it could have afforded to go a bit bigger and darker (embrace more of the grotesque potential of the tentative gothic flourishes), though the slightness of it all might add a smidgeon of verisimilitude or else at least make it feel that bit more Literary. In that sense, Bartlett may understand something about writing that Cairo did not—the value of doing less, in more than one sense.

Speaking with clients worldwide for decades now has made me keenly aware of trends. I am the farthest thing from a physician, but maybe more a metaphysician! Here’s the 'What is that?' moment haunting half of my sessions worldwide and the realization is one word - Parasites. Traveling pains, indigestion, running #2 one day, constipation the next, insomnia, headaches, unexplained rashes, right ankle hurts one day, left elbow the next. Ate an apple at the farmer's market, got sushi on a Saturday night, your cats are licking you clean, you got parasites. I have found worms in guacamole, and yesterday had Panera Bread southwest chicken soup. What did I find in there? About a half dozen tiny white worms about a half inch long eeewwwwww in the garbage you go! Now more than ever you’ll want to do a cleanse for sure! People can also be tearing at us, upsetting us and going through our purse or wallet in a parasitic fashion and these are vampire-ish energetic parasites! During this festive time of year, and always, we are seeing you as more sovereign, bug-free and a greater unfolding version of thee! Be safe out there and enjoy the spirit of the season.

Are You Watching Heartstopper on Netflix?

The new Netflix romcom is a beautiful coming-of-age portrait of young, queer love.

Let me just get this out of the way: We binged the entire series in two nights. Netflix’s new gay romantic comedy TV series Heartstopper is so, so good, and I would compare it to if Euphoria and Love, Victor had a baby, and maybe that baby was friends with Elite and Sex Education, but wasn’t influenced by either of their naughty behavior. It’s a pure, happy little series that deals with very real, serious topics like coming out, being trans, figuring out who you are and bullying.

It’s based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alice Osemen (have you read it?) who also created and wrote the series. The show has received critical acclaim, and has earned a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Adam Miller from Metro calling it “A life-changing moment for the LGBTQ+ people of today and all the ones who will follow.” I couldn’t agree more.

Here’s the basic plot:

“Heartstopper tells the story of Charlie Spring, a gay schoolboy who falls in love with someone he sits next to in his new form, Nick Nelson, while also exploring the lives of Charlie and Nick's friends, Tao, Elle and Isaac.

I had actually never heard of it before seeing the trailer for the show last month, and then got a gentle reminder from some of our subscribers this past weekend that it was out and that we must watch it immediately. The episodes are named things like “Meet”, “Crush”, and “Secret”, and they’re listed at the start of each new episode, so they get your attention immediately as you watch to see what will happen next.

The thing that separates this show from some of its modern contemporaries is that it doesn’t really fall into some of the teen romcom cliches and tropes. Just when you think a character will do one thing, because that’s just what happens in shows like this, they surprise you and do the exact thing you want them to do instead (aka, the right thing). It’s rewarding and fresh and fun and, at 27 minutes an episode, completely digestible.

Another thing that makes Heartstopper so relatable and just plain good, is the notion that just maybe, all your dreams really can come true. Right? It’s everyone’s dream that the person they like will like them back, or better yet, love them back. Nick and Charlie represent that very real human feeling of wanting to be loved by the person you love, no matter if you’re a teenager or much older. And when it comes true, when the person you love chooses to love you back, it’s the best feeling in the entire world (speaking from experience here).

I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to have shows like this and “Love, Victor” around when I was in high school. I haven’t been a teenager in a long time, and high school feels like a entirely other lifetime, but I was deeply closeted during those years, always fearful someone would find out I was gay. I couldn’t imagine a world where I would ever come out to anyone. And then, a year and a half after graduating high school, I met PJ and because of him, I had the courage to slowly come out to the ones I love, and after that, I didn’t really care who knew and who didn't. I feel like things would have been a lot easier for me to come out back then had I had a show like Heartstopper. Still, I believe I came out exactly when (and with who) I was supposed to.

I truly hope LGBTQIA+ youth who watch these shows find comfort and acceptance, and that they help them to not feel so alone. The effect that representation has on a young mind, hell, even an older one, cannot be overstated. Seeing someone who you can relate to on the big screen is invaluable, and we can all only hope that more and more stories like this continue to be shared to a wider audience.

You were being dropped off by your older brother who gave Damian a look from the front seat of his car that all but said he’d mess Damian up if he hurt you. Funny to think about your brother trying to beat him up but he would never consider it. Damian opened your car door for you.

“Beloved, you’re early,” he said with a grin. Your brother gave a rough hey and Damian’s face dropped and he gave a curt nod. “I’ll have Alfred drop her off so you won’t have to pick her up,” Damian told him. Your brother nodded again before leaving.

He wasn’t short little Dami anymore but had been hit by puberty like a bus and was almost 6 foot tall. He smelled like cologne and his sweater was so freaking soft. You felt the fabric on his chest with your hand and he stiffened and coughed a little. Oh yeah, he could feel that. You flushed.

“So you want to watch a movie?” Damian said pulling away.

“Yeah. Sounds great,” you said sitting on his bed pulling your shoes off. You slid up the bed to lay on his pillow as he grabbed his laptop.

“Drake doesn’t know but I’ve set it up that every film he downloads, I get a copy too so I’ve got a bunch. Though his taste is pretty sappy for some of these,” Damian said wrinkling his nose.

“Probably to watch with his girlfriend. Or maybe he’s a sap,” you laughed. Damian climbed on the bed and laid the laptop on the other side of you. His arms temporarily caged you against him and you couldn’t help but think of him on top of you. Damian laid back as the film started playing. He put two pillows behind his head to watch from behind you. You laid on your side and he wrapped an arm around your waist loosely.

The film was probably great. All you could think of was how close your boyfriend in the softest boyfriend sweater was right beside you. You slid farther back until your back hit his chest. He inhaled audibly but didn’t move. Damian cursed himself. You had definitely heard that.

You ran your hand along the arm of his sweater as the movie went on. He smelled a little like soft cologne and spiced tea. Everything was fine until there was a sex scene. Nothing graphic but enough to where you were both very aware of your situation. Damian slid his body a little back from you making a little space between you and him.

You turned to look at him and he couldn’t help but brush his lips against yours. You slowly turned in his arms until you were making out while laying on your side. Damian held your face softly with one hand. Your fingers slid into his hair. His tongue slipped into your mouth gently just exploring you.

The door to his room opened.

“Master Damian, your father needs you in his study at your earliest convenience. Also... do take care with your visitors. You are only 16,” Alfred said, looking pointedly at the ceiling before leaving. Damian flushed on his tan skin. you covered your mouth and giggled, embarrassed.

“At least it wasn’t your dad,” you said. He nodded as he stood up.

“I won’t be long. Just watch the movie and I’ll be back as quick as I can,” Damian said and you noted that his lips were pink and maybe even a little swollen from kissing.

“Yeah, no problem.”

It took all of 1.7 minutes for Bruce to notice his son’s lips. His eyes narrowed a little and he looked critically at Damian who was staring at the computer screen.

“Damian, you are of the age where sexual education is important. You are practicing safe sex, yes?” Bruce asked in an even tone as if almost casually but really he wanted to seem calm. Damian twisted so fast to look at his father.

“I am not,” he said quickly.

“You aren’t??” Bruce asked shocked. “That’s very dangerous-“

“I’m not having sex. At all,” Damian said completely red. Bruce calmed.

“None? Because condoms-“

“Father, I’ve been taught. And if I do have sex I will be safe but I’m not now,” Damian said. He refused to look anywhere but the screen. “How did Alfred tell you so fast?” He complained.

“Tell me? Is there something to tell me? You know what? Don’t answer that. I trust you. There is a bowl of condoms under the sink in the bathroom off my study. All of the boys use it and it stays full. No questions asked. And the family doctor is very discreet for any questions you might have,” Bruce said delicately.

“Okay. I got it. Thanks. But please stop. Tell me about the case,” Damian practically begged.

It was not a few minutes but a full 2 hours later that Damian came back to his room. You were asleep. A movie played in the background and you hug his pillow. Damian smiled a little before waking you. It was almost time for his brothers to arrive. You sat up quickly. You’d never fallen asleep at his place.

“Sorry I was so long. Family stuff,” he said vaguely. He did that all the time. “It’s almost time for the party.”

“Oh I need to get ready,” you sat up. You’d planned to get started a little earlier. You didn’t dress fancy around Damian; he didn’t care. But his family’s Christmas was fairly formal.

“Is this okay?” You asked 20 minutes later. Damian nodded with a little smile.

“You look beautiful in anything, beloved. But this is exceptional,” he said and you flushed. His way with words. “It’s time to go down stairs.”

Damian took your hand and you walked downstairs. His eyes lingered on you longer than necessary. Somehow Tim and his girlfriend and Duke had beat you both downstairs. Damian pulled out a chess board and Tim and Bruce once again dragged work into every room they entered.

“I won’t go easy on you,” Damian warned. He was far better at strategy but your moments on the board were incredibly erratic to the point that he couldn’t predict your next move.

“I wouldn’t expect anything else. If you did, I’d expect a body snatcher,” you said and he hazarded a small smile. Damian didn’t want to appear too pleased. Bruce was watching him while maintaining conversation. You understood his weird stoic family dynamic enough to ignore it.

Damian won 3 out of 4 games. You could admit that your win was more luck than skill but you took it. Dick and his girlfriend arrived and the party moved to the dining room.

After a few minutes, a man you had never seen showed up humming to introduce himself and his date. The butler seemed very happy and for a minute you wondered if it was his son. No, this was the mysterious brother who was always fighting with the family.

“Dami, who is that?” You asked whispering.

“Jason Todd, one of my father’s wards. And I suppose his girlfriend,” Damian said. You nodded and watched as they sat down. Later in the evening, the eldest, that Damian had even called his brother, proposed to his girlfriend.

You were given a small glass of champagne and you looked at it quietly. Did they forget you and Damian were 16? Not exactly legal. But you didn’t say anything and you both drank the tiny amount of alcohol with everyone else. Damian squeezed your hand and gave you a tiny smile.

The party moved to the parlor with a billiards table and a dart board on the wall. The adults were served more alcohol and pudding was served informally. A tasty sticky cake that you dare not asked the ingredients was quickly eaten. You and Damian sat on a loveseat in the corner where you could watch the others play billiards and other games. Tim and Jason played a heated game of 9 ball. Jason was a natural. Tim was all strategy.

You leaned against Damian’s shoulder as the storm raged outside. You were full and the room was warm.

“It’s far too dangerous to drive out tonight. It’s turned into a blizzard so you all will stay here. There are plenty of rooms and beds for everyone and anything you could need,” Bruce announced to the group. Jason sighed and Damian opened his mouth. “I’ll call her parents to let them know. Don’t worry Damian.”

Damian relaxed and wrapped an arm around your shoulder. You began to doze as the pool games played. He ran his fingers along your outer arm and watched from the corner of his eyes as you fell asleep. He enjoyed your body warmth and soft sweet scent subtly.

An hour later you woke as you were slowly being moved. Strong arms cradled you and you could smell Damian’s pleasant unique scent strongly. You gripped his arm as he carried you out of the room. He hushed softly to let you go back to sleep.

“You got him shot?!” One of the women in the room yelped and you jolted awake.

“It’s okay. Go back to sleep, beloved. Don’t mind my stupid brothers,” Damian said quietly. He gently laid you on his bed and pulled you in the covers. His soft sheets quickly lulled you to sleep.

While you slept, he grabbed blankets and settled on the floor. Half an hour later, right as Damian was falling asleep, Bruce opened the door quietly. He saw the boy on the floor, nodded, and shut the door.
