biggest culture shocks in china (from an Chinese American)
specifically anqing, which is where I am atm visiting family
lack of wheelchair accessibility- like there’s no ramps or anything. my gram gram uses a wheelchair sometimes (super bad knees) and the amount of times we had to leave her behind was honestly crazy
2. people here are LOUD. like ik a lot of Europeans and such are always saying like “Americans are so loud!!” CHINESE PEOPLE YELL ON THE REGULAR. it’s so funny tbh cuz i can never tell if they’re angry or not
3. no privacy. my relatives keep telling strangers sensitive/embarrassing shit abt myself (low key kinda funny)
4. the driving (especially in the city) would send an American into a coma cuz there’s literally no traffic control or anything, people will be on bikes weaving around the cars and scraping past them by inches. like the control these people have over their vehicles is insane. i was in a taxi and i was panicking cuz we almost hit someone like 4 times in a row. Oh also NO SEATBELTS??? if the drivers in china were American I’d be dead thrice already bro
5. lack of plus sized accommodations for clothes. im not overweight/plus size, just a bit chubby. large clothes will not fit me here😭 ordered the largest size possible for a dress on taobao (Chinese amazon) and I couldn’t breath in it💀
6. squatty toilets. you gotta squat and piss into a hole in the ground. apparently the only reason there isn’t piss everywhere is bc the people have trained to aim their piss perfectly. this is only really in the restaurants but oml it’s so annoying and also like my grandma literally broke her back cuz she fell into the hole. it’s scary lowkey
7. people use motorcycles/electric bikes a lot instead of cars. Not that big of a shock but they’re EVERYWHERE. like parking lots have a section just for them it’s kinda wild
8. No credit cards, instead ppl buy stuff with online banking services similar to PayPal and shi so that’s kinda silly. especially wechat, Chinese people love wechat anyway china is the goat apart from the fatphobia that’s kinda not super skibidi of them😔
