I had a thought yesterday thinking again about if you add back in the original romance storyline between Dorothy and the Scarecrow's Kansas variant Hunk that was supposed to happen in the 1939 "Wizard of Oz" movie that it is very similar to Elphaba and Fiyero's relationship in the "Wicked" musical. 😀 Again for those that don't know the DVD bonus features years ago confirmed Dorothy and Hunk were originally supposed to be 16 and 18 years old and classmates, with Hunk getting ready to go off to college and it was his last summer working on the farm. They were going to end the movie with Dorothy realizing that she also had feelings for him too, which the original lyrics to "If I Only Had a Brain" revealed Hunk's feelings for Dorothy and that he felt like he wasn't worthy of her (likely also told this too by others maybe even Dorothy's uncle Henry) until he got his brain/schooling. It made me realize that this fits Elphaba and how she feels about Fiyero and that she could never be with someone like him and them also being classmates. I've seen posts compare Dorothy and Elphaba too and I totally see it as well, but when you add this plot back in the ships also are very similar and since both Hunk and Fiyero are variants of each other and both Dorothy and Elphaba get one. Even though the romance was scrapped in the 1939 movie you can easily still see some of it there as they did film some scenes before the scrapped the original ending, especially when they filmed some with Buddy Ebsen, who played the original Tim Man before he got sick from the costume and they had to recast, as there's behind the scenes pictures that clearly show Dorthy and The Scarecrow looking more like a couple. I've always shipped Dorothy and Hunk/The Scarecrow since I was little picking up on it and the "I'll miss you most of all" scene and how she touched his face when she woke up in Kansas, and then when "Wicked" came out I loved that Fiyero was The Scarecrow too and was Elphaba's love interest too. So I just started thinking of these similarities again thanks to the movie and re-watching the 1939 movie and can't help but wonder when they made the musical for Broadway if that was done a bit on purpose, and why I'm also curious how they're going to do the 2nd movie as it'll also have Dorothy in it too.

I finally just saw this on YT last night after looking up clips from their "Wizard of Oz" movie since seeing "Wicked" back on Sunday and getting back into the Dorothy/Scarecrow ship I've had since I was little. Have no idea how I didn't know about him showing up on her 60s TV show and this was after they talked and sang "If I Only Had a Brain" with the original lyrics. For those that don't know the movie was going to originally end with Dorothy and Hunk confessing their feelings for each other and promising to write while he was off at college (she was supposed to be 16 and him just turned 18) implying that they'd end up married in the future. So this looks like Dorothy and Hunk decades later. 🥰

Here's the original last verse of the song implying how he felt for her:

I just finished reading the wicked screenplay at 2am (naturally) and I discovered another clever bit of fiyercrow foreshadowing!!!!! the realization made me cackle with delight. this part didn’t make it into the final cut, but maybe that’s because it would’ve been too on-the-nose? footage of this line delivery by jonathan bailey probably exists in a director’s cut that we’ll maybe, hopefully get to see… one day…

Fiyero flinching because he didn't know she was behind him while he was stress pacing, " Nobody, no one."

Dorothy while smiling, "If she's no one why are you so nervous?"

The scarecrow laughing nervously, " Because this is how act whenever I'm thinking of her- I mean nobody!" Scarecrow losing even more brain power when he thinks about his witch love.

I love how Boq and Fiyero have the same dynamic of short farmer x tall royalty that Dorothy and Ozma had because that would mean that baby Tincrow was just MLM Dorzma

I really need to write a fic where Glinda sees Dorothy and goes "yup. You're my child now." And then after a torturing slowburn her and the wicked witch get together so Dorothy has aunt Em and Uncle Henry at home, and whenever she goes to Oz she has her witch lesbian moms waiting for her.

I mentioned in an older post I'm finally reading the Ray Bolger biography by Holly Van Leuven, which is great telling all of Ray's life and his career with so much I never read before and I'll do a full review when I'm finished soon, and I just got to the "Wizard of Oz" chapter and everything that happened during prep, filming, and release of it, and she actually did mention the abandoned plot about how Dorothy and Hunk (The Scarecrow's Kansas version) were supposed to be love interests and high school classmates. She even confirmed they did film the original slower temp version of "If I Only Had a Brain" (which the audio of the song is on YouTube) where it included the lyrics that was actually Hunk confessing his feelings for Dorothy via The Scarecrow "Maybe I'd deserve and be even worthy of ya, if I only had a brain" as he was getting ready to go off to college in Kansas, which wakes up Dorothy to realize her feelings for him too.

I was very glad to see Holly did include this (as well as more about Ray and Judy's lifelong friendship after filming the movie) since she had access to Ray and his wife Gwen's papers and personal collection in various libraries, as there's still a lot that don't believe that really was part of the film originally (though there's so many parts of the movie where you can tell it was still there till it was written out of the ending) even though it was revealed on the DVD bonus features in 2005 and there were articles about it, and there's hints "Wicked" partly used it for the musical and the Elphaba/Fiyero ship. I've always loved the Dorothy/Scarecrow ship, especially with it being her friend back in Kansas, that I hope one day a writer explores this more in whatever form. So now this book counts as an actual written source for those that need it. 😀

Watched The Wizard of Oz original movie for the first time in years and I have to say it's as marvelous and memorable as it was when I first saw as a little kid on TV. It's even more interesting this time around with my basic Wicked knowledge (never seen the play live nor read the books yet). The flying monkeys still aren't my favorite though - sorry Elphaba.

I can also see why y'all are all up in Fiyero so much (he's no Wizard but the Scarecrow can totally get it in any version), he's my favorite of the guys, and it's funny seeing him and the Wicked Witch knowing their history even though it's more of an AU. And Glinda is definitely suspicious and multilayered beyond just being the "good" witch... poor Dorothy didn't ask to be dropped into all that political and relationship drama honestly.

Now I'm off to bed with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" stuck on loop in my head 😊

Here is some headcanon about our favorite Kansas-dead sister's shoe stealer 11 year old and her weird fucked up found family

Dorothy doesn't know about the Sad and Complicated back stories TM of the people that sorround her but she's has a feeling that there is something more to it

Fiyero/Scarecrow is like one of those suburban moms to Dorothy. The kind of that makes her eat fruit and remind her to do her homework...(becuse he doesn't want her to end up as screwed up as he was.)

Tin man/Boq is totally the Bad influence older brother. He definatly taught Dorothy how to play poker despite Fiyero/Scarecrow objections.

The cowardly Lion is just as clueless about the lore as Dorothy. He vaguely remembers a blonde guy and a green girl helping him when he was a cub and that's about it,he hasn't really paid much attention to that memory in years.

Anyways since Dorothy and the Lion are both Clueless TM to the lore they have a current bet going on about if Fiyero/Scarecrow had a thing with the Good Witch because they remember him acting fidgety when they mentioned her.

Also is this whole Au thing (I guess if that's what you would call it) Dorothy is 11 years old (which tecnically is true but many more adaptetions make her like 13-15 ish for some reason) and is much more Little kid if anything.
