This is the final set from the Book of Days volume 6 and from the attempted daily drawing through the nightmare year of 2020. There is still more to come from that year but the Book of Days project finishes here. The first is a Chinese Feng Shui door knocker which is believed functions like a gargoyle in western medieval magical thinking by appearing so fierce it frightens away evil spirits. I love the polished surface of the bronze and had attached it to my front door to prevent harmful things like the pandemic. After a year of horror I’m not sure the door knocker or the gargoyle on the other balcony are particularly effective but both look nice and were patient enough to stay still for a drawing. The second page is another self portrait using leftover paint that was blue. It was painted while listening to the nightmarish Radical Dance Faction when their song Rogue Trooper came on so I adapted it to be a self portrait as Rogue Trooper. I haven’t had that hair cut for years but drew it in for the cosplay of the situation. Next is another protector - a line drawing of the head of Medusa I am building for #earthmoves in Wallasey. Finally, the last drawing from this project, a glimpse of the outside world. The Continuing Ed building at the uni with the shoulder of the Metropolitan Cathedral. I understand that the outside world still exists but my faith in it may require some proof at some point. The Redwoods... one of the most magical places in the world. It’s so humbling and awe-inspiring to bask in the presence of giants that have stood sentinel for over a thousand years. The sense of peace I feel in these ancient groves is indescribable — all I know is that my whole body feels transformed by the experience. I can’t imagine what it must have looked like to see Northern California pre-1900’s, when the giant redwoods blanketed over 2,000,000 acres of forestland. Only 4% of these old growth trees exist today. This sad ratio makes my heart hurt... but walking through the miracle that is Stout Grove, I am immensely grateful for the tireless and passionate efforts of the Save-the-Redwoods League and all of the conservation organizations that helped to protect as many of these old-growth forests as they could. Thanks to them, these redwoods are still here. And so it ENDS! Yesterday was my last day working with @globalvillageproject. It was the best of times doing the work and engaging the community and some of the worst of times dealing with the nonprofit structure and leadership. I’ve made a conscious choice to remember the many lessons I've learned, the relationships I've formed, and the successful outcomes I've had doing this work. I’ll take the negative experiences as lessons to guide me throughout my journey and I’ll keep the great experiences with me for as long as I can. I’m leaving this space knowing that I did everything in my power to bring about real change in community engagement and as a part of the leadership team. GVP continues to be a leader in offering refugee girls access to the education necessary to pursue their dreams. I'm grateful to have been a part of carrying this vision for the past three years. I wish the GVP community much success in furthering this work. I also challenge the community to become advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion, supporters and implementers of transformative service, holistic student approaches, and centering culture in education, and builders and sustainers of intercultural communities. I will continue to challenge myself to do the same and advocate for this sector forever. The Book of Days is all drawing, and was now drawing to a close. This is the penultimate set from this final volume recording a dreadful year of financial, emotional and visual austerity where the last things left to draw really were myself in the mirror. They are no longer in strict chronological order but consist of a range of grim little drawings which are mostly of me. First is a twenty twenty vision of me wearing the obligatory face mask in limited pallet and recording my mood. The second is me equally harrowed and looking suitably aged and ruined. Next is one that doesn’t look anything like me as I was trying to learn the Loomis Method of measuring the distances between the hairline, brow, nose and chin. Next is a diagram that is not of me but is looking at how the Loomis Method structures profile and last one was me but doesn’t look like me and was drawn in a Zoom Meeting with @paulg.art while we tried to repair a tech problem with a session we were doing for Continuing Ed. I look younger and cuter on that one that I am likely to look again in this life but my eyes have been somewhat randomly placed to an approximation of where eyes go - but not quite. Our significant other becomes the used coat we place on the rack ( or floor ) as we rush to see what's in the fridge. We smile as we pass by but we're thinking about school, work, or even our phone being too far away from us. We're more in love with that dam phone than real flesh and blood. 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 Don't fret, we all do it. It's just that in their case they no longer had time. It was over. When Chase got the call that his beloved was killed during another lousy commute, he sat there with his stupid phone, looked at his numb hands and smashed the device on the ground. 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 They make those phones tough because not even the glass broke. He then looked down and saw the pics of her displayed on the screen. He grabbed his face and placed his elbows on the table. He sobbed. He wanted one more touch from her even if it was passing by as he put his coat on the rack, once more as it dropped to the floor. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞💋💋💋💋💋🤳 We can't say we're even allowed the next breath. Now we read that and deep in the recesses of our mind, we truly think, not us. Try to take the time to visualize the magnitude of shock it would be to lose that "one" special person in your life. Really sink into your emotions and see this. The trick in this scenario is not to lose hope, but understand the magnitude of gratitude you now feel for that person. Keep practicing this scenario and you will see more gratitude and less of that person being simply a fixture on the wall that you no longer look at. Start looking. Start noticing. Start doing. Does anyone ever read the actual post text anymore?? Let me know. Here's my thoughts. Feel free to share yours. There is a good and a bad, a plus and a minus, a flip side to everything. EVERYTHING! Certain people attach stigmas to the practice of utilizing positive thinking to better your life, but then again, they attach them to everything else as well. Logically to me, if I have the option to always look at and focus on the positive or the negative, and I also know that whatever I focus on is going to effect how I think, feel and act, why on earth would I choose to focus on anything but the up side? There is strength and power in the positive side, and only drama and despair on the other. If you actually read this, let me know. Which side do you look at? I will also let everyone know, that by nature and through nurture, my initial thoughts go straight to the negative. Always have. Very self criticizing and self defeating. I say my opinion above based on actively working to condition my thinking over the years, and really observing how it's changed my life in tons of ways. I try to share what I have learned and am learning in the hopes that I might help other people and learn from other people, but never to be obnoxious or obtrusive.
