I feel like a broken record, but I keep seeing people put dangerous posts, encouraging others not to wear a mask, despite the fact that people lost their lives to this pandemic, including three people personally I know. Let me repeat, THREE PEOPLE I PERSONALLY KNOW LOST THEIR LIVES. If you don't believe the internet, believe me. . . . . This is from Dr. Megan Hall, who demystified the fears if wearing a mask, and why you SHOULD WEAR A MASK: "From Dr. Megan Hall... Hi friends! I have seen numerous posts and heard people complain they “can’t breathe with a mask on” or they won’t wear one because “oxygen levels drop dramatically while wearing a mask”. Also, “a mask doesn’t protect you from breathing in the virus” but in the same sentence argue they won’t wear one because they are “re-breathing their exhaled carbon dioxide”. I’m not sure how one can even make sense of this theory; if you really believe the virus is penetrating the mask and you’re breathing it in, how do you also believe your exhaled CO2 is getting “stuck”? Viruses need a vector to spread, COVID-19’s vector is respiratory droplets, those droplets aren’t readily getting through a properly worn mask. As a follow up to my previous post about wearing face masks, I did a little experiment. I wore each mask for 5 minutes and checked my oxygen saturation (shown as the percentage below) along with my heart rate (HR, in beats per minute) using noninvasive pulse oximetry. Keep in mind, immediately prior to this, I had been wearing the surgical mask for 5 hours. Results: No mask: 98%, HR 64 Surgical mask: 98%, HR 68 N95 mask: 99%, HR 69 N95 plus surgical mask (which is how most healthcare providers are wearing masks): 99%, HR 69. There is no significant change in my oxygen saturation (or HR) in any scenario. Though maybe inconvenient for some, you can still breathe. As a physician, I urge you and ask you to please wear a mask to protect yourself and those who cannot safely wear a mask (many of my patients because they are under 2 years old). Due to factors such as allowing the access of technology to somewhat blindlessly; cultly lead is to believe most, if not everything we find on the internet, and two, we are ALLLL sometimes guilty of ignorance... maybe not all but most

Let’s face it, since sketchy incidents like Y2K, we as a society have dropped our guard with this weird thing called internet and have gotten soft DARE I SAY COMFORTABLE. So comfortable that if we aren’t asking Siri, we are asking Alexa, and if we aren’t asking google, we are asking yahoo, or bing, and if the answer to our questions are on YouTube welllll hell, video evidence, now it’s really got to be true.

Talk about persuasion.... we’ve become so comfortable with the culture of the internet that we stopped asking questions.

BUT MAYBE THATS WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO

Ask questions so we can research. Those great who evers are just inserting these key words and images and commercials and ads into are minds so we can search what they want us to search find what they want us to find.... and who’s to say otherwise if what we find is true or false.... CAUSE WE COMFY BEING “IGNANT”

In my profession as an Athletic Trainer, we pride ourselves as a organization which has labeled themselves to be an evidence based practice.

Meaning, we must have evidence proving the techniques and method of treatment chosen to provide to and for our patients.

Cause a patient wanna know if they gonna get better. There’s no way I’m walking up to someone talking about, let me put these sticky pads that’ll release electrical impulses which may feel like obnoxious pins and needles similar to when your foot is waking up from sleep... you know the feeling like your whole world is gonna end if you move your limb... and yeah let me put these pad on your head to clear that headache up for you😁.

For the safety of us and the patient, it is paramount not just be okay with status quo, that we not just take the word of internet. We must educate the patient and educate ourselves. In doing so, we’ll provide optimal treatment and continuesly grow as a profession enhancing everyone’s overall experience. But we must READ and analyze and READ and question and READ then ACT!

Normally, we as clinicians will view already researched data through analyzing peer reviews, scholarly articles, journals, case studies, meta analysis, systematic reviews, all of that to ensure we are using valid reliable current data.

Since medicine and healthcare is always changing and advancing, we are always changing and advancing and those who don’t, are just straight ignant.
