i think he's shocked here bc he didnt expect raphaels call to play out like that, he prolly thought theyd issue it more seriously. the issue with this being so half-hearted is now alicia isnt absolutely certain that this is the will of the heavens, so she's less inclined to follow along. it doesnt help that her board of nobles (seriously why does she keep these bozos around they just keep yapping) are arguing back and forth abt whether or not to listen. this is kind of a little wrench in the smoothness of the plan... everything now hinges on alicia's whim now.

Warning, fandom rant.

I was gonna piggyback ride off Tagedezorns post about falling out of love with the fandom.

Dont get me wrong, I still fucking LOVE 40k.

Im having a great time painting my minis, reading the lore, reading and talking with the BL authors on twitter or talking the ears off the staff in my local GW (don't worry, they love it, and they have some fantastic HC’s too!)

But the rest of it is sadly losing its appeal for me as well, and it saddens me to see other fan artists or writers feeling the same, I thought it was just me.

When I first started to become active in the shipping fandom about a couple of years ago it was fantastic. I felt so welcome and wanted, I had never gotten a reception like that in any fandom before. I even faced my fear and started writing fanfiction, and people seemed to love it.

But the last months/year it feels like it's all gone. As if Tumblr has died, it feels like I'm shouting into the void. (I have a few people who still interact on my posts and I see you and I love you). But I have eightdoubled my followers last year, but that hasn't resulted in any more interaction, other than a few more likes. But to be fair, likes does nothing.

Im not an influencer or a content creator, and I have zero aspirations to become one. That is why I stopped doing tiktoks. I do not want to chase trends or algorithms, I want to be unhinged about my blorbos and see people being unhinged about their blorbos in turn.

I love the intense passion fandom can have, even when it's not a character I'm personally into.

I really don't want Tumblr to die. I have tried Discord and it was the most alienating and disheartening experience I've had since like high school.

When I first tried it out it was soo much fun, but as time went on, more and more people who seemed to like me stopped posting on there, and more and more whenever I posted I just got straight up ignored.

I could post in a channel that had been dead for weeks, and suddenly people started posting about other things, everyone ignoring what I wrote. If it happened once or twice I wouldn't have bothered, but a dozen or more times? It just fucking sucks. I noticed how it started affecting my mental health, trying to reach out and talk to people, but just being talked around and over. So I just stopped posting.

If someone doesn't like me on Tumblr I won't notice or get sad, but seeing it happen in real-time just fucking sucks.

And also, on Tumblr there is always the off chance that your post gets necromanced. That just doesn't happen on Discord.

And another thing that has happened a lot is I write a fic or a Tumblr post. It gets zero interaction, and I'm like “oh I guess no one is interested about that,” and then I see that someone has just reposted my fic/post in a discord and people are geeking out over it over there.

I'm not a paid artist/writer. I do what I do because I want to geek out over something, preferably with someone else. But I effectively become removed from my art. People are discussing it, just not with me.

Dealing with being unliked as a person fucking sucks. Especially when it's supposed to be your hobby-fun-time. And it is making me not want to post stuff anymore.

dissecting stanford pines and finding organs that don’t exist but like in a metaphorical way

that’s it that’s the title i’m going with. this is a long one folks o7

most of this isn’t sourced or canon at all it’s just personal interpretation/headcanon/whatever else u wanna call it, but!! since more people are seeing my deranged gravity falls ramblings now i figure i should probably give some perspective as to why i like/defend ford as much as i do

(in my other gf posts i do try to stick to canon to back up whatever point i’m making - this is just about my personal opinion of ford as a character, and should be able to be thrown out in regards to my other posts)

so for some background/setup/whatever (it’s important i promise bear with me), different people have different instinctual responses to anxiety/stress. i come from a family (genetics are fun) where the default response is to start (metaphorically ofc) biting and hissing like a cornered animal. this doesn’t necessarily mean there’s any actual hatred or malice or anything towards the people that end up getting scratched - they might just be at the wrong place at the wrong time, they might’ve done something super minor and insignificant that added on to a preexisting pile of stress, etc etc

i cannot stress enough that i am not saying this is ok. you dont need me to tell you that hurting people who don’t deserve it is a bad thing, lol. what i am saying though is that sometimes people can kind of suck for reasons other than just genuinely wanting everyone around them to be miserable

this is the last “background” part i swear BUT another thing thats less genetic and more just me being weird is that i’m the type of person where like. any minor environmental change can really stress me out lol. like even just reorganizing my desk can be pretty emotionally taxing

SO. finally back on topic. stanford pines. i see a lot of the behavior/patterns i just described in him. like i’ve spent my entire life around people like this, and while i understand why a lot of people see him as just some asshole, i can’t help but see him as a guy who’s just kinda going through it lol

just talking about the more recent events as of the series, he’s just spent 30 years god knows where doing and seeing god knows what, he has an abusive ex who wants to murder him and his entire family (plus the whole dimension, really), and in the three decades he’s been gone the entire world - including his own house - has changed and left him behind. add onto that that he went missing in 1982, way before we had all of the emotional/mental health resources we have now, we all saw what the stans’ childhood was like, and that ford is terrible with people - including, imo, himself. if there’s anybody out there who would have Feelings and not understand what they are or where they’re coming from or what to do about them, it’s this guy

this entire setup is the perfect circumstance for fear and anxiety and stress and uncertainty to all get translated into anger. a really big example of this, to me, is how he talks about dipper in journal 3. i’ve talked about this before somewhere so i’ll try to summarize as fast as i can lol

reading his initial entry about dipper would make u think he like. hates this kid lol. but i really don’t think he ever did - he was really excited to meet the kids in the show and already seemed to care about them just by virtue of existing, and his opinion on dipper in journal 3 seems to do a complete 180 pretty quickly which ,,, doesn’t really fit ford as a character. like i love the man but that guy can hold a GRUDGE

here’s how it reads to me:

ford gets back to his home dimension after 30 years and everything is different

he’s subconsciously kind of struggling with the fact that he doesn’t really have a “home” anymore - the sense of familiarity and comfort that would normally come with the word is gone. (i specify that it’s subconscious because, like i said earlier, i do not get the vibe that he’s particularly aware of his own emotions)

he finds out that journal 3 - something he made with his own two hands and considers part of his life’s work - has also changed in the decades he’s been gone. this adds to the feeling of unfamiliarity with the world around him

it’s easier to blame that “final straw” and say that he’s just upset about his work being tampered with rather than address the actual root of the problem, so that’s exactly what he does. this still doesn’t mean that there’s any genuine hatred towards dipper. anger in the moment, yeah, but not hatred

again, this is entirely personal interpretation, and i completely understand if u don’t see it like this!! this is just a pattern of thoughts/behavior that i’m very familiar with, so it’s easy for me to apply it to situations like this even if it’s not really part of the canon

i also think there’s a big problem in this fandom with just ,, not seeing ford as a Person with Emotions? idk how to explain it but it feels like people expect him to always know exactly what to do in every situation just bc he’s old and academically smart. like whenever another character does something objectively bad it’s “well there were extenuating circumstances,” (which is usually true and i agree !!) but ford never really seems to get that treatment. if he does something bad it’s just because he sucks

a big example of this i think is the fight between him and stan (y’know the “you ruined my life”/“you ruined your own life”). you cannot look me dead in the eyes and, in full seriousness, with the context of everything ford was going through with bill at the time, say that he was fully mentally/emotionally stable during that conversation. “oh so you’re blaming stan-“ NO!!! stan was also going through it!!! that’s the entire point - they’re both people with their own lives and emotions and everything else that comes with that, they had very human reactions to their respective situations, and they both ended up hurt!! hopefully i’m explaining this right but i just don’t like it when people pin everything on ford, like there was a lot going on and at the end of the day he’s just a human

wasn’t really sure how to work this in so i’ll just put it here - i don’t think ford ever truly hated stan, either. familial bonds are complicated, and there can be a whole lot of anger towards someone without true hatred being present. i briefly mentioned the stans’ childhood sucking earlier, and i don’t just mean stanley - it’s easier to pinpoint him as a victim of abuse/neglect, but that doesn’t mean ford had it great either. their parents (specifically filbrick, but caryn didn’t exactly do a fantastic job with them either) expected nothing of stan and the world of ford, both of which would weigh heavily on any child. plus, ford being the favorite doesn’t mean all of his emotional needs were met - filbrick seeing him as an opportunity to make money doesn’t mean he was suddenly an emotionally present and caring father towards him. WCT wasn’t just an opportunity for ford to go be a famous scientist or whatever - it was a chance for his father to love him, something both of the stans desperately wanted. (WCT was also on the opposite side of the country from where they lived but i’m sure that’s completely unrelated !!!)

do i think stan deserved anything that happened to him after the science fair incident? no, absolutely not, he was a child. do i think it was right of ford to just stand there as his brother got thrown out? no, absolutely not - but he was a child too. as for them not speaking for a decade after that, like i mentioned earlier ford can hold a grudge like no other. (this doesn’t just apply to stan, either, ford dedicated half of his life to trying to kill his ex lmao.) i think ford’s ability to hold on to anger like that is actually a pretty major part of/flaw in his personality, but again, anger - even the strongest, most long-lived of it - is not synonymous with hatred. stan, who ford has always gone to for help when he truly needed it, it not what ford’s hatred looks like. bill, who ford actively wants to die, is

anyways!! i never know how to close these things lol. ig in summary i just see ford’s behavior (in the show at least) as more of a sign of internal struggle rather than like ,, genuinely hating the people around him and wanting their lives to suck. did/does he have an ego problem? absolutely. is he incapable of love and human connection? no. is he immune to manipulation/abuse/neglect/etc and everything that comes with that? also no

headcanons only occur to me when im in the middle of writing fic and a character just does a thing and it becomes canon to me. im sure i will come up w some when i get around to writing that one wip idea . if i ever do 🙁 BOOOO brain let me write abt my girl i beg. and i avoid any and all talk about yosano because i actually cannot handle seeing people get things wrong about her. i will say i think, as always w bsd, the issue is people take two extremes. either shes evil violent and awful and doesnt care abt the agency and is assaulting them on the regular bc she feels like it (what are you people saying🙁🙁) or shes lovely and a gentle mother figure to kyouka + kenji (😐😐😐). when really, she IS violent shes a bit crazy shes what it looks like to hold life and death in your hands AND shes capable of softness and cares about her friends. thats always a defining feature of her, the reason she initially cant handle the reality of her ability is bc she cares too much. the rigid boundaries she has on it now and the mess she makes of people when using it, are very explicitly within canon tied to the fact that she cant devalue life and her ability naturally does. it HAS to be unpleasant so it isnt idealised. those two parts of her, violence and affection, exist at the same time. this literally isnt even analytical, this is just stuff canon says directly that people apparently dont get. lawl. that IS one of the things thats fun when writing her though, bc not only do those two things exist at once, the line between them is blurred. violence and affection, in the right circumstances, become united, mutually dependent. and theres sooo much you can do w that prose-wise. most of the time i spend thinking abt yosano i end up spiralling abt ability thoughts, but ive already got those out extensively and i refuse to repeat myself ever 💞

i think the valm arc is fine. its not my favorite by any means but i think it has a purpose and does it well. its really more for furthering chrom as a character rather than pushing the main story further and thats. fine! its not the nothingburger people claim it to be, even if its maybe not the most fun.

can i say chrom? i think chrom has a lot of good going for him, but i think somewhere along the way they got kind of caught up in the epic story of war and time travel and robin being grima that they forgot they had a main character already. they kinda started his path in the first arc, gave it SOME direction in the second, and then… oh god! where did it go?! i just had it a second ago! not only do they not really finish off chrom’s story that well because the focus turns more to robin, i also dont think they explore his flaws well enough? he clearly HAS them, hes aggressive and hot headed and naive (“naive” does it count if he knows hes being naive and just says fuck it idgaf) and thats great but i dont feel like he ever learns from that. i think emmeryn dying couldve led him down a darker path for a while (not TOO dark, but its important to note that chrom is kind of. uh. erm. well the treatment of plegians and the valmese is. ah. um. well anyways an arc that makes THAT make more sense) until maybe like robin or lucina help him snap out of it and he looks back to what emmeryn might have done in his place, and what he can do to still stay true to himself but learn to honor her the way she might have wanted instead of becoming more like his dad (another plot point unexplored!) so. ANYWAYS thats my two cents on chrom as someone who GENUINELY REALLY LIKES HIM. i just think he couldve been better.

selena, and not in a “shes badly written” way. i dont think she is! i actually really like her arc of maturing past who she was in awakening and finally finding a place/group of people who wont compare her to her mom and trying to stand out on her own merits now that she has that opportunity. thats fantastic! i just wish they didnt try to push the weird subaki and caeldori stuff. i feel like that just ties her back to her mom and kind of resets the whole thing? i made another post about it but… just that. it bothers me. it also drags down caeldori as a character by reducing her to a prop for selena to bounce off of. bad all around. they shouldve made selena an exception to the rule and gave her her own kid instead of forcing you to do some random ship to finish her arc off, especially when laslow and odin both got to further their own characters with their kids. just kinda sucks!!

i dont think its a sin either, ive always loved seeing people 'OCify' pre-existing characters, its always really nice to see how creative everyone gets. i do think this is my first time doing it though. growing up i was always such a 'stay as close to canon as possible' type because i kinda saw the original creator as like The Authority on the characters and dont get me wrong i still feel that way when it comes to small writers but ive been trying harder to take creative liberties with the characters themselves.

it was something that always made rp a little difficult for me when i was younger, i wanted so hard to be the character i never let myself have fun even tho id watch others do rps where the character feels so different. getting into rp jow that im older i wanna have fun in that way too!!!

so i let myself take An, made her into a demiboy, changed his name gave him tattoos and piercings, made him autistic gave him a special interest in astronomy (they own telescope and stargaze as often as possible) and cooking (his specialty is steak.) and then filled out his story with some new details that helped make him feel more flushed out and im!!!! having such a great time!!!!

its been so much fun, hes shaping up to be one of my top 5 OCs, i think about him constantly i love him so much and thinking about his confidence and where it comes from and his ability to enjoy things without shame (hes therian, a wolfboy and he wears his ears out the house at least twice a week and even trains his senses to feel more wolfy) helps me feel less ashamed of enjoying my less common interests too its great hes great.

Until a few years ago I was very much a "i hate when characters are ooc" and dont get me wrong, in some situations like in fics pretending to be canon i do still dislike it, but in a lot of fics its just an au, you're taking it and making your own world, your own characters, as long as its based on canon the things can go wild.

Most of my oc-fying comes from the headmates tbh, i just base them around the headmates in my brain who are based on canon.

im so glad we got pretty much Every Single Character in the cast page now even the minor ones because I've been ao curious about them and we knew jack shit of them unless you check tumblr every fucking day. so thats one hell of a good change. the animations and icons also help bring the characters more to life and DOES kc animate well. seriously I can't emphasize enough how much i loved the cast pages they were so fun to read and skim through !!!!

im also glad kc explained the backstory of hemera and barry so the fandom doesn't shit on them for no reason. in this economy we live in we get barely any characters who react to trauma in ways that are considered bad or harmful/through anger 💔
