How are the ros when in a romance with mc?

Hi angel!

I'm going to describe kind of overarching "themes" or motifs for each of the romance options and their routes. There won't be many spoilers, but lil fun hints (fun is a loose term cuz im kinda evil).

Also, you'll get to experience romances with the RO when you read the story hehehe, trust me it's coming! The demo is only up to chapter 1...gotta give MC some time to heal from that sweet spicy trauma (or not).

Chapter 2 Part 1 is coming along quite nicely, I'm anticipating it to be about 30K without code.

I'M SEEING DON'T WORRY DARLING TOMORROW AHHHHH

Life update: This was in my drafts and I did see it. I thought it was really good and Harry Styles really wasn't that bad.

Description: Flo and reader in a coffee shop ❤️

You take the last available tabil (A/N: yeah, this is about how well my brain is working right now), which is tucked into a comfortable little corner. You put your hands on your coffee cup, feeling your fingers soak in the warmth after being in the cold all morning.

You pull out a textbook and a highlighter, determined to at least do some work since you trekked the whole way here from your apartment. So far, that's not going very well.

The words flying right through your brain. You don't pick up any information, despite following along with a highlighter.

"Excuse me?" A gentle voice from behind you spooks you out of your frustration. You turn around to see a woman with a black hoodie and sunglasses on. "Could I sit here? There's no other open seats."

For a second, you almost deny her request. You'd rather not be murdered before you have the chance to graduate. But the way she looks so anxious makes you nod. She's probably hiding a gun in her pocket.

"Thank you so much." She sits down and you hear a little British accent in her voice. Strange.

She doesn't say anything else as she pulls out a laptop. You return to your book.

You can't focus. You keep looking up at the woman, wondering why she won't take her sunglasses off inside.

Finally, you have to ask "what's with the disguise?"

Her head jerks up.

"Trying to hide from the paparazzi?" You joke.

"Yeah," she answers very seriously.

You laugh until you realize she's not joking. "Are you famous?"

"Maybe." She has lowered her voice to a whisper now. You can barely hear her.

"Can I know who you are?" You ask, not meaning to be nosy. Her face is frozen. "You know, cause I was nice enough to let you sit here."

She glances around the cafe, then takes off her sunglasses.

OH MY GOD, YOU'RE SITTING WITH FLORENCE PUGH AN-

"Weren't you in Little Women?" You calmly ask.

"You really didn't recognize me?" Florence's eyes study your face.

"Not until you took the sunglasses off. What's your name?"

Wow, you are holding it together really well.

"You don't know my name?"

You give her a defeated smile. "No, I do. I'm just trying to be civil."

She smiles slightly. "Thanks."

You nod.

"What's your name?"

You almost trip up for a moment. Florence Pugh wants to know your name? "Y/N."

"Nice to meet you Y/N." She gives you a genuine smile. "What brought you to this cafe today?"

You hold up your book. "I planned on trying to study."

Florence reads the cover. "That sounds boring."

"It is," you laugh and put the book back down. "What about you?"

"Reading through a script." She flips her computer around and you see a movie script. "Trying to decide if I should agree to this project or not."

"Do you think you will?"

She nods slowly. "I really like the character. Sounds like a good opportunity for me."

"Then I think you should take it."

Florence smiles. "Well if you think so, maybe I should."

You smile.

"Do you come here to study a lot?" She suddenly asks.

"When I feel like walking up that big hill." You roll your eyes.

"Well, I think you're a really nice person to talk to. Let me know when you'll be here again." She passes you a little slip of paper. You pick it up.

abby paused, registering that she had called you that. she glanced away embarrassed, tugging you down in the seat across for her as they settled down to eat.  "shut up and sit your ass down and eat." she grumbled to hide her growing nervousness. “awehhh, gigi” you cooed, trying to cover up the fact that you were flustered. you sit down as instructed, excited to try what you made together. rolling her eyes at your cooing, she opted to stay silent as she took another bite of the food. she stared rather intensely, (but if asked she would deny it) at you waiting for you to try the delicious cooking. you just laughed off the intense stare, feeling the subtle pressure of tasting their meal, that they made together. you think giddily. you wait for it to cool a bit, giggling at the obvious impatience from abby. 

once cooled, you take a bite, pausing to savor the taste before giving a review. “it’s really good," you practically stuffed your face, abby having to tell you to slow down in concern of your choking. “thank you for not burning my mouth with spices and for letting me help!”

abby grinned, satisfied with your judgement. despite knowing how good of a cook she was, abby still liked the reassurance. “no problem, it was nice to have a little help. the kitchen is my sort of safe space so allowing you to help was new to me as well. you did great." she looked down at her bowl to avoid eye contact, continuing to eat the food they made together.

“WE did great," you corrected, wearing a proud look on your face. you were glad that abby was so willing to let you help out because they made a delicious meal together! and on the plus side, you liked spending time with her. “maybe we can cook together again sometime!" you offer, excited by the idea of them spending even more time with each other. 

“yeah yeah, our cooking" a sharp smirk setting itself on her face. “eager to spend time with me aren’t you? but yeah sure i don't mind." she tried to be nonchalant in her response. as if she wasn’t giddy herself at the thought. she would have you as long as you were staying. now that she had been with you again, she didn’t know if she could bring herself to let go. you stick your tongue out at abby as she teased you for wanting to spend more time with her. “you know you love hanging out with me too”! you insisted, a pouting on your face as you twirled your chopsticks mindlessly. 

“how’d you know?" she countered back easily. she did love spending time with you, or else they wouldn't be here like this right now. maybe she liked this a little too much actually. shaking her head to clear her thoughts, abby cleared her throat. pushing her bowl to the side seeing as she was done with her meal, she took the chance to glance at you, flush still not quite gone from her cheeks. “cute.” she mumbled lowly, grabbing a quick sip of water. the cool liquid soothing her throat as she eyed the bits of rice sticking stubbornly to your cheeks. 

“i just do," you smirked, resting your head in one of your hands as you ate. you were almost done your food, trying to eat at the same pace as abby so they didn’t have to waste time going back to her room, when you heard the quiet word the other muttered. you choked on the curry, thrown completely off guard by the compliment. your face was so flush, you thought you were going to explode. "stop that.” was all you could mutter.

she handed you her water bottle seeing as it was the closest drink to her at the moment. “be more careful.” abby hissed worriedly, not even considering that she herself was the cause. maybe i didn't say that as low as i thought. oops. you accept the water when offered, taking a deep breath after nearly dying from getting flustered. 

“calling me all these endearing names…” trailing off you thought about all the ones that affected you, “bun, darlin’, cute. you’re gonna kill me.” you spoke quietly, not actually wanting her to know how much they got to you. understanding the situation, she let out an amused snort. “all it takes to render you speechless some pretty sounding words, who would've thought." abby mused, a teasing lilt to her tone, maybe a little flirty if you squint. 

you responded by rolling your eyes, a small laugh escaping your lips at the way she teased you, “only when you use them.” you meant to stop thee, but your next sentence tumbled out of your mouth soon after, “it’s different coming from you" you spoke softly, quickly getting up to clean both of their bowls out to escape the consequences of their pseudo confession. 

abby tugged at the linen of her shirt, taking in your words, a fluttery feeling settling in her. “oh, is that so, how come?" she mused, getting up and putting the leftovers away. “because you're beating me to it, making me flustered and shit..." you explain, saying the last part a bit more quietly out of embarrassment. you didn't think anyone has made you feel this... flustered before. and abby didn’t even seem to be trying. you stared down at the dishes as you washed them out, feeling too nervous to look over to abby. “you’re just.. i don’t know" you shrug, stealing a glance. you “did know but it wasn’t the time, if ever to say what you really wanted to. “let’s go up to your room abby.” you request, turning off the sink and drying your hands. 

abby was stunned. she wasn't used to this with you, and definitely not anyone else. of course she knew what flirting was but to think she was subconsciously flirting with you when she believed she was just telling the truth. however, to think she rendered you like this made her smile a bit before she schooled her expression. she tilted her head a bit lost at the topic change but allowed you to do as you pleased. abby was comfortable you, but when did the energy shift into what it was now, she ponders. abby nodded and glanced around once more making sure everything was put away before heading back to her room with you. they finally enter the room and you take a look around, marveling at the different nicknacks and other things that dawned the room. “what do you wanna do now?" you questioned, trying to relieve some of the tension you felt between them both in the kitchen.

abby let out a breath she didn't know she was holding at the question. she didn't want things to be off between them and definitely didn't want to scare you off. “mm, whatever you'd like. we could some silly shit or we could always just talk." she shrugged, not really having anything in mind. she never really had any fun or hung out with others outside of her work so this is beyond her experience. 

you watch as abby’s body relaxes as she lets out a breath, trying not to make it look like you were staring. you were, very hard might i add. you couldn't help but watch abby as she stood in front of you. you admired the taller woman for so many reasons; her strength, passion, hell even her incredible physique. “i think just talking sounds really nice right now," you flash her a warm smile, “‘m too tired from the food to do anything.” you stated as an excuse, but really just wanted to spend more time with this more comfy version of abby. you move over from the spot you took on her in-suite couch, laying down to rest your head on a pillow, patting the empty space beside you as to call the other over. abby sunk down on the couch, as she climbed over you do get to the spot you patted, it was just enough space for the two of you. she took a minute or so to get adjusted before glancing at you. woah, they were close, granted not like—in your face, but close enough. you were honestly stunning and abby could feel her breath hitching.

“w-what…uh" she cleared her throat, voice cracking a little. “what are some of your hobbies, that you do when you aren’t reading or gaming?” she finally got out. this was so embarrassing but as long as no one knew her thoughts right no, she could experience it alone. but god, did you make it hard to keep her mind focused instead of taking in every little detail you possessed. you noticed the other seemingly try to avoid looking over at you, as a result, you couldn’t help but use that as an excuse to stare right at her, nearly zoned out admiring every one of her perfectly crafted features. abby must have been a gift from the stars. you think, nearly in a trance, as if bewitched with love. how, intriguing. you couldn't help but laugh a bit at the question, all too well aware of how awkward the conversation was. “well, dressing up and jamming to music?” you stated, though more as a question, trying to think of what could be considered a 'hobby'.

“and i like spending time with you. but i don’t quite think that counts as a hobby.” you admit, flushing a bit as you finally look away towards the ceiling. abby leans up on on her elbow, resting her head on the palm of her hand. reaching out to tuck a stray loc that had fallen out of your pigtails back in place, as she nodded, acknowledging the response. “music music, that's nice. figured the dressing up one. what type of music? and, “ after a few seconds she sort of froze, gaze finally meeting yours as she processes what you said. oh. how, endearing. abby just continued running her fingers through your locs, ignoring the warmth that started to creep up her neck, the room starting to feel hot. “—and i think it counts, i’m fucking amazing so it works." abby tried to cover up her fluster with his usual carefree yet cocky attitude. 

“but uh, yeah i like spending time with you too darlin’.” she finally let your hair slip through her fingers, bringing her hand back to run in through her own short messy strands. you looked up at her as she ran her hand through her hair, trying not to make the stint in your breathing too noticeable—because wow. you just realized how close she was—and abby’s gentle touch made you nearly melt into her hands a few seconds ago.  “any kind of music i think- i like r&b or indie the most, but people usually tell me it’s ‘too soft’ for someone like me.” you admit, sort of embarrassed. you were positive abby had a really cool taste in music, nothing you could even begin to compare to. you have heard some stuff through calls, each and every one which you had ended up enjoying. but it felt different to be able to talk and discuss this stuff face to face. 

you couldn’t help but giggle at the confident attitude, taking that moment to slip into the spot that opened up when abby moved her arms. a spot right next to her chest was wide open and you wiggled into the area, forcing their entire bodies to touch. “yeah, you’re pretty amazing—i’m glad you enjoy spending time with me too" you flushed, looking up at her. “that sounds cool as shit, let me listen sometime. don’t worry about what those people think, they just stick to one lousy ass thing." she frowned, you definitely listened to some good shit. she heard some of it one time, not sure if it was indie though. feeling your smaller body against hers, she tensed for half a second before relaxing. abby adjusted a bit so she could run her hands through your locs again. they were so soft. you smile happily at abby’s adamancy when it came to defending your taste in music, feeling really safe around her. despite the occasional insulting nickname when you did something silly, abby never made fun of you for being yourself. “okay, i’ll send you a playlist sometime." you offer, not even worried if she didn’t like it, because you knew she would be kind about it no matter what. 

unable to reach up to the brunette’s hair, you settle with resting one hand on her hip, and the other laid between your head and pillow. you lean into her head massage, craving her and wanting abby to never let go. abby grinned satisfied with the response, “i will be waiting on that playlist bun.” 

feeling the hand settle on her hip she grumbled approvingly. your hand was very soft and warm, meaning it was more than welcome. although it would’ve been even if your hands were freezing cold. she was completely and utterly weak to you.  continuing to run her hands through locs of dyed and natural tones, she wrapped her other hand around your waist. you are pulled closer as the other wraps her hand around your waist, if that was even physically possible. you couldn’t help but notice the fresh scent of her shirt, realizing she even smelt cool. or it was the attraction talking again. “i could do this everyday, for forever.” you mumbled, voice tinged with awe and honesty. you felt so embarrassed admitting something like that, because you felt like this was more than just playful flirting. you could only hope abby felt the same way, because if she thought you were just kidding you would die of embarrassment. 

her grip on your waist tightened slightly at your words. you made her heart beat too fast and if she didn't get to call you hers sometime soon she’d lose it. abby let out a small laugh out of endearment. she pulled you closer, so you were flush against each other. her thumb tracing patterns on your waist. taking a deep breath she tentatively asked you a question she'd been dying to since she saw you again. built up the courage to ask her next question, she really hoped she did not interpret anything the wrong way. “may i——may i kiss you?” she murmured lowly, searching your face and hoping she wasn't misreading whatever they had going on. 

you let out a quiet whimper as abby pulled you  closer, and hoped she didn’t hear it. it was unexpected how close they had gotten, already thinking they were as close as they would get, but you didn't mind. you wanted more, honestly, to somehow get closer to her, but didn’t know how. 

you were snapped out of your thoughts by abby's question—almost right on cue, and for a moment you lay there blushing because you felt like she had read your mind. 

"what a sweetheart" was all you managed to get out at first, air ripped right out of your lungs. you was about to kiss abigail jones— and she asked for it. you shift slightly in her arms,  physically feeling your heart pounding. "yes...please" you spoke, tone breathy, waiting for her to press their lips together and relieve the tension that has been between them the whole night. hearing the approval she grinned,  moving the hand from your hair to cup your face. 

finally, she went in for it, ducking down to capture your lips in a soft kiss. this, this is what she was missing. it felt so right to be with you like this, in each others arms. she felt her heart beat faster and her face heat up, but disregarded that in return for focusing completely on the kiss. the time between saying yes and feeling the other's lips on your own felt like ages. like you had been waiting for this kiss your entire life. 

they just worked together. their lips moved perfectly against each other, bodies molding against each other as they got more comfortable. the kiss didn't last long—maybe a couple seconds before they  were pulling back and you were silently and desperately longing for more. their eyes connected for only a moment after pulling back from the kiss, causing you to get shy once again and avert your eyes to zero in on the threads of her shirt. 

"you-uh- that was..." your voice trailed off, struggling to find the words for the kiss. perfect didn't encapsulate it well enough. it was better. your face was completely flushed, mind racing over the kiss that they shared. abby huffed out a breathless laugh at your state.  "what, left you speechless?" she teased knowing she was just the same way. the kiss was just wow. she could never explain it in words, even if she wanted to. it just felt right, and that's all she needed to know. 

her thumb stroked your cheek, wanting those pretty dark brown eyes back on her. it wasn't like she was going to directly ask again, so she went for the next best thing "need another to help you come up with the words ?" a sly, knowing tone in her voice. you pursed your lips together as you looked back up at her. you thought she beautiful, eyes relaxed but piercing in color, face flush and lips slightly parted. you could barely believe that any of this was real. but when abby asked for another, well there was no way you even thought twice about agreeing. "yeah, i think that would help a lot." your lips formed a small smile, anticipation flowing through your veins. abby smirked your reply. good to know you felt the same way she. it felt wonderful you to be in her arms like this, she relished in the feeling. flashing a sharp grin, she brushed a strand of hair out of your face at the quick response. her breath caught at the fact that, yes, she could kiss you again. leaning down and capturing soft lips with her own, she let out a pleased sigh. she was happy.

A "Nightmare" To Remember

*Flo and Sean are talking to Arco and Hailey in the living room of their house.*

Arco: So, Hailey tells me that you two were found on the Night Beach, passed out, yesterday?

Flo: Well, yes... yes, we were... apparently.

Hailey: Lucas and I found them. Which raises a whole bunch of questions.

Sean: Go ahead, and ask away.

Arco: That might sound familiar. *Arco proceeds to look at nowhere, like an imaginary camera.*

Flo and Sean at the same time: ...what does that mean?

Arco and Hailey at the same time: Nothing.

Sean: Anyways, you were saying?

Arco: Oh, yeah.

Flo: Besides, I've heard about you four. Aren't you guys very busy?

Flo, hesitantly: ...okay, then. If you say so...

(Flashback...)

Flo: Me and Sean have been traveling, looking for shelter, when in a split second, Sean's left eye was slashed by something.

Arco: So, that explains the scars.

Sean: It still hurts, but not as much as it did yesterday.

Hailey: This happened yesterday?!

Flo: Yep. Anyway, let's continue.

I helped Sean get up, and we saw a thing... Another forest spirit, except... with a large hole in their head.

They looked... demonic.

Hailey: Wait, are you talking about Lucifer the husk?!

Flo: Apparently.

Sean: Wait, you guys know about them?

Arco: Yep. He's a living horror story.

Hailey: Lucas told us all about it.

Sean: So, he's a zombie?

Arco: Quite a bit. He's known as the Untold Mystery.

Sean: That's... concerning.

Flo: LET'S JUST KEEP GOING.

The other three: okay.

Flo: So, we escaped from Lucifer, and we found this Meowscarada wandering around. He decided he wanted to help us, bc of Sean. We got to know him a bit, and his name was Syklos.

Sean: After patching up my left eye, I gave him a hug, and thanked him for it.

Flo: it was cute.

Sean: QUIET, FLOWER... ////////

Flo: Anyway, after walking and talking to him for a bit, we came across this humanoid brown fox. They looked like they murdered someone... They were covered in blood stains. Their face, their body, it was creepy...

Syklos had an idea, and called out to them, saying: "Hello? Can I help you?"

To which, the fox responded: "of course, why don't you hand me your hearts...?"

We all found that frightening, so we backed up a few steps before they roared and chased us down like a wild wolf catching its prey...

So, we ran south as fast as we could.

They were extremely fast, and me and Sean almost died.

Syklos, however... he wasn't so lucky...

He got captured by the demonic fox and faded away into the forest, after the sun had set on the horizon.

Sean and I were tired, and completely out of energy. The last thing we remember was seeing the vast ocean from the beach, before blacking out...

Hailey: ...oh, no...

Hailey: Then, that's when Lucas and I found out guys.

Arco: That sounds frightening...

(End of Flashback...)

Sean: Those two things that I can best describe as the devil's advocates, were terrifying...

Arco: ...You must be hungry, then. Since I assume you didn't eat yesterday...?

Flo: That is true. We haven't eaten anything since that afternoon.

Hailey: Tell you what? How about we all go out for a bite to eat?

Flo: That sounds great! Speaking of which, what are the restaurants around the region?

Arco: Oh, there's LOTS. I'll give you a list once we head out.

Sean: Sounds good!

*The 4 spirits head out and grab a bite to eat. Meanwhile, someone's down at the Night Beach. It's Lucifer!*

Here are some of the tracks from 1983 Sean Combs (and Chucky Thompson) has sampled on his productions. Most of of P Diddy's productions are from the 1990's so at the time the tracks from 1983 were roughly between 10 and 15-years-old, I remember they were definitely considered 'oldies' at the time, but a contemporary equivalent would be using Hold On, We're Going Home by Drake, Get Lucky by Daft Punk, Low by Flo Rida, or Milkshake by Kelis (didn't Beyoncé do this?)

Juicy Fruit - Mtume it's been sampled a lot a lot, Puffy used it on Juicy for The Notorious B.I.G. (1994). It's well documented Setsasonic's Talkin' All That Jazz is a response to James Mtume's rant on Bob Slade’s The Week In Review on NYC’s KISS-FM calling out ‘lazy’ Hip-Hop producers that never learned to play instruments, opting instead to take up ‘sampling’. Describing them as the “Glorification of mediocrity“

All Night Long - Mary Jane Girls It's been sampled more than Juicy Fruit, Puffy puts it to use on Mary J Blige's Mary Jane (All Night Long) (1994) taking music and vocal hooks. Mary Jane Girls were, of course, Rick James' girl group and All Night Long is by far their biggest hit. Kevie (Waterbed) Kev of the Furious 5 does a fun cover All Night Long (Waterbed), also from 1983

Stay With Me - DeBarge this must be one of Puffy's favourites as he uses it more than once, the biggie is One More Chance/Stay With Me (Remix) by Biggie featuring Faith Evans (1994)

Between The Sheets - The Isley Bothers I've shared this already here. It's one of those tracks you know but don't necessarily know who it's by or what it's called, it's been sampled even more than All Night Long, it's probably best known for being the music to Big Poppa by The Notorious B.I.G (1994)

New Edition release their debut album Candy Girl in 1983 and Diddy samples two ballads off of it Jealous Girl which becomes Jealous Guy by Mase (1997) and Is This The End which is used for P Diddy's own track of the same name. The prepubescent New Edition were produced by Arthur Baker and released on his Streetwise label, songs were written and co-produced by Maurice Starr and his brother Michael Jonzun (of The Jonzun Crew)

Sean Combs has never been afraid to use the biggest samples wholesale, sometimes they're more like remixes than samples. Here are some of the pop hits from 1983 Puffy has used: Every Breath You Take - Police becomes the tribute/cash in I'll Be Missing You (1997), Let's Dance - David Bowie becomes P Diddy's Been Around The World (1997), Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - The Eurythmics is Nobody Do It Better Than Us by Lil' Kim... and in honourable fashion of doing a Les Dawson on a hip hop track lines from All Night Long - Lionel Richie and Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder get sung on Feelin’ So Good by Jennifer Lopez and Can't Nobody Hold Me Down by P. Diddy

Gotta Make It Up to You - Angela Bofill this one is a little more obscure 1983 quiet stormer from Angela Bofill. It's used to great effect on Faith Evan's Life Will Pass You By (1998)

A Garden Of Peace - Lonnie Liston Smith a solemn spiritual piece from Lonnie Liston Smith becomes the makeup song Rain by Total (1998)

Belladonna - Andreas Vollenweider this new age track is expertly flipped for I Got A Story To Tell by Biggie on his Life After Death album (1997)

My Top Songs of 2022

So this is over a year late. I did my top songs of 2023 recently and remembered I never did my top songs of 2022. To be honest I was not in a great place at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. But now that I am at a much better place, it was fun to look back at 2022 and reminisce on the songs that got me through that.

Usual disclaimer that these are not necessarily the 10 best songs of the year musically or even my 10 favorite songs of the year. They're simply the songs that defined my year of 2022 the most.

First, the honorable mentions. As a K-pop fan and a fan of SM artists, GOT the beat and "Step Back" was a dream come true for a dream I didn't even know I had. I never imagined that BoA, Taeyeon, Seulgi, and Wendy would all be on the same song, yet 2022 delivered. In 2022, I was definitely in my feelings already as you'll see, but songs like "i feel everything" by Amelia Moore and "In The Stars" by Benson Boone were definitely on repeat. Lastly, who could escape "Nonsense" by Sabrina Carpenter and all her outros? With that said, let's jump into the list!

10. "Hold My Hand" by Lady Gaga

Top Gun: Maverick took 2022 by storm, and while I didn't watch it in its entirety that year, its impact was huge and so was its leading single "Hold My Hand." I am a sucker for songs that take me somewhere, and just like the movie, this song takes its listeners on a flight. A power ballad filled with synths and powerful drums, it's the perfect match for a sequel to an iconic 80s movie, and Lady Gaga's voice is soaring by the end. Both Top Gun movies embrace their themes of bonds being stronger than fear and even death, and Lady Gaga's song accompanies this theme with touching lyrics about overcoming adversity together, hand in hand. Ironically, I watched this film at a house party, feeling very alone because I was surrounded by people I could not trust. I definitely have teared up to this song a few times and attempted to belt this song in the care more than a few times. As with most movie singles, the accompanying music video mostly has clips from the movie, with shots of Lady Gaga in settings thematically related to Top Gun, giving the same uplifting feel as the film itself.

9. "Cardboard Box" by FLO

Anyone who knows my music taste knows that I am a sucker for (1) R&B and (2) girl groups. They don't necessarily have to be both, but when it's both and it's done right, then I'm here for it. Debut single "Cardboard Box" was a great introduction for the British girl group FLO. The simplicity of the midtempo but poppy beat, smooth verse melody and catchy chorus melody, lyrics reminiscent of Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable," and the 90s-inspired music video had the group looking effortless. The girls followed up with EP The Lead which continued the trend of 90s-inspired R&B hits, many of which were produced by MNEK. I'm glad the girls also had a successful year in 2023, and I hope they and other girl groups continue to shine with their unique contributions to the music industry.

8. "MANIAC" by Stray Kids

Stray Kids has been a regular on my playlists for some time with notable hits like "District 9," "Side Effects," "God's Menu," and "Thunderous." They have never managed to make my top 10's though, until now. "MANIAC" feels like the kind of song where they have worked to understand their chemistry and perfect their craft. One thing I like about groups like Stray Kids is that different kinds of people are coming together, each bringing something different to the table. Stray Kids in particular has a lot of different guys with different distinct voices and talents, and while I love when artists step out of the comfort zones, "MANIAC" is where each guy is doing what they do best. The vocalists deliver the simple yet addicting melodies, and Han and Changbin going in on the raps. Most notably, this song has the perfect use of Felix's deep voice right at the chorus which sets this song apart from other K-pop songs out there. As expected, the music video also delivers crazy high-energy visuals, switching back and forth from fits and settings that are bright and colorful to ones that are sleek, black, and white, capturing the duality of poppy and cool that are expected of the K-pop artists nowadays. The corresponding album Oddinary showcases the group's diversity and different textures, with some songs that are a bit more experimental and others that fans of K-pop hip hop, pop, and ballads would love.

7. "FIRE" by EXID

When all five members of my favorite K-pop group terminated their contracts with their record label, I thought the group was over, pretty much consistent with the "7-year curse" common to K-pop groups. So imagine my surprise and delight when the came back with one more banger! While "FIRE" doesn't entirely live up to previous smash hits like "Up & Down," "DDD," and "I Love You," it still delivers a creative, unique beat that gets people on the dancefloor in a way that only EXID could do. With K-pop's arguably best female rapper, vocalist, and visual, EXID is able to to deliver both sweet and spicy vocal textures. The accompanying music video gives hot visuals in both senses of the word, with a jail and cowboy setting (not sure why the cowboy part? but it's cool lol). Their final EP X only has two more songs, the R&B inspired "IDK (I DON'T KNOW)" and their more traditional pop thank you note to their fans, "LEGGO." If we don't ever get more group releases from them, I am thankful for this pleasant surprise and hope to see solo releases from them in the future.

6. "Yours" by Conan Gray

Now we're getting into the sad songs. "Yours" is a beautiful ballad, starting very simple with just a piano as Gray's voice comes in soft. As the song progresses, the narrator's thoughts build in realization of his one-sided love, the melody matching the buildup, the climax being Gray's soaring vocals in the chorus. This soft to powerful buildup happens again with the second verse and chorus, now with bass added, finally escalating to the outro complete with background vocals and drums, ending with the softest "Just to not be yours" barely escaping Gray's mouth. The music video has Gray singing alone in a flower field (what a fit by the way), and when the outro hits, he's in the dark alone, running. Altogether, it's a heartbreaking piece that I found relatable as I found myself in a one-sided relationship. "Yours" made its way onto Gray's much anticipated sophomore album Superache which is full of similarly heartbreaking songs, both previous hits like "People Watching," "Jigsaw," and "Memories," as well as B-sides like "Movies," "Footnote," and "The Exit." 2022 was Conan Gray's year, and I suspect he'll be conquering 2024 as well.

5. "Unsung Hero" by for KING & COUNTRY

In 2022, my parents moved out of state and finally retired. My mom was still struggling with some health issues, and thankfully she's even stronger now. Then and now I continue to see how they have aged and continue to see how they loved me and sacrificed so much for me and how much I reflect them and want to continue their positive legacies. As a January release, this song was on my playlist from essentially the beginning of the year, but it was several months later that this song caught me off guard and randomly had me bawling. The duo did such a great job creating a heartfelt tribute to their parents and capturing what it feels like to recognize their love and accomplishments and also carry that weight into your own life. Accompanied primarily by strings and piano, the Smallbone brothers' simple vocal melody starts with second-person narration of their parents, gradually transitioning to first-person, hopeful to be strong and loving like their parents. The music video is an exact match of expectations too, with the brothers sitting in a movie theater watching home videos. I don't often have Christian artists and songs on these top 10 lists, often because the lyrics or music don't match my music taste, often either lyrically cheesy or musically predictable, but for KING & COUNTRY's album What Are We Waiting For avoid these pitfalls for the most part with fantastic featured artists as well (including an old friend!), especially with standouts like "RELATE" and "TOGETHER." Overall, "Unsung Hero" has me so thankful for my parents, and I also pray that I can be strong and loving like my dad and mom.

4. "neverletyougo" by ROLE MODEL

ROLE MODEL has a way of making songs feel intimate by sticking with simplicity, and "neverletyougo" is such a great example of that. It's a simple beat, and only the hook has singing, heavy with vocal effects. The singer primarily raps in this song. Ultimately it's a love song, reinforced by the matchingly simple music video of him serenading a girl on the street, but both the video and the song feel melancholic. The metaphor here may be that the intimate bond between them can last through the ordinary and the winters that life has to offer. This song resonated with me in 2022 because at the time I was also feeling that I could never let my relationship go, an optimistic perspective during what I thought would be a temporarily gloomy period. I loved ROLE MODEL's 2022 debut album Rx, as it showed his diversity in styles. In fact, none of the songs on there had a rap style like "neverletyougo," but both the upbeat happy songs and the slower emotional songs are both definitely worth a listen.

3. "I Lost Myself in Loving You" by Jamie Miller

While Jamie Miller managed to secure the top spot on both my 2021 and my 2023 top songs list, "I Lost Myself In Loving You" is potentially my favorite song by him. It is of course an emotional pop ballad as Miller's expertise is, starting with the classic piano and soft vocals. The narrator seems to reach a realization at the chorus, where the vocals become strong and the piano starts playing powerful chords. By the end of the chorus, the drums have joined, and the guitar takes over as the primary accompaniment in the second chorus, Miller's vocals now sounding confident, assured of the assessment. The chorus repeats a few times, dipping into just piano and soft vocals in between and at the end, introducing a tender vulnerability, but ultimately there is beauty in the narrator taking his strength back, finding his footing again, and remembering who he is. Looking back, it was such a red flag that I resonated with this song so much, feeling like I had to fight to keep many aspects of myself alive, a struggle to stay in tune with who I was when there was someone close to me telling me they hate everything about me that I hate about myself, that I would be easier to love if I was someone else. The music video has Miller singing alone in the city, and while it's not a groundbreaking video by any means, it does get that feeling of isolation across but also feels hopeful for a truer future. I was so excited when Miller's debut EP Broken Memories was released, stacked with stellar vocal performances and emotional lyrics as expected from him. Cheers to Miller and staying true to yourself.

2. "in limbo" by Munn

"in limbo" was certainly the song that I resonated with the most in 2022. Every single line felt like something straight out of my mental diary. I am grateful that I found this song, because it was comforting to know my situation was not unique. Like many songs on this list, it starts with a simple and slow verse, but the chorus feels like a rush, suddenly cutting into a quiet and vulnerable "I'm six feet deep in limbo / I've gone the lowest that I've ever been for you." The music video captures the perceived change in pace, all shots of Munn trapped, but some in a calm state, some in a frenzied state. It concludes with Munn in a black void, a literal limbo. Munn did not release a full body of work in EP or album form in 2022, but he did release a number of other singles that also invoked powerful messages.

1. "Lift Me Up" by Rihanna

As an avid Rihanna fan, I have been (and am still) eager for more Rihanna music. As everyone knows, Rihanna is an absolute force; she had multiple hit singles each year every single year from 2006-2016 (with the exception of only one single in 2014). Her last single prior to "Lift Me Up" as a main artist was "Love On the Brain" in 2016. It's hard to believe that it has been so long since her last album, and since "Love On the Brain," we only saw features on "Lemon" by N.E.R.D. in 2017 and "Believe It" by PartyNextDoor in 2020. That makes "Lift Me Up" her first single as a main artist this decade and only the second overall. All that to say, there was (and continues to be) a lot of anticipation for more music from Rihanna, and "Lift Me Up" does not disappoint. A stripped down ballad both musically and lyrically over just strings, Rihanna showcases how much her vocals have grown over the years and how much her singing is still very much intact. It's a touching tribute to actor Chadwick Boseman who passed away in 2020. As the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever honors Boseman's character, "Lift Me Up" serves as the lead single to both grieve and uplift those who have suffered a loss. Reminiscent of previous songs on her discography such as "As Real as You and Me" and "Mother Mary," the raspiness in Rihanna's voice helps convey raw emotions. The music video is absolutely stunning, with Rihanna singing at a beach at night, eventually the sunrise piercing through the darkness, conveying hope in grief. As difficult my year was in 2022, there were so many things to be thankful for. Life is short, and those difficult times are only temporary. As the song says, "We need light, we need love."
