When I was a kid, I didn’t know the “Don’t tread on me” flag was political in nature. I thought it was literally about refraining from stepping on snakes, like it was a sign to warn people walking on wilderness paths to watch their step to avoid stepping on a snake. And kid me was like “hell yeah” because I love snakes and I don’t want them to get stepped on, so I was like silently low-key obsessed with the flag. Needless to say I was real pissed off when I learned that it was a political thing and, in fact, not a nature safety/animal welfare PSA.
