look as a lesbian I don’t get why it’s so awful to just want lesbian spaces?? We as queer people all have different experiences and we can have smaller spaces while still embracing the whole community.

Lesbians go through different experiences than bi non-men do. That DOES NOT mean “we suffer more” or whatever because I hate the whole oppression olympics shit. We are not attracted to men neither sexually nor romantically, and that’s what makes us oppressed in this heteronormative world. We go through harassment, corrective rape, violence, and conversion “therapy” because we are homosexual. If my dad ever found out I was exclusively attracted to women I would get kicked out. Why is it suddenly so awful and “gatekeepy” to ask us to have our own spaces? We still have sapphic spaces! We even have bi spaces and pan spaces! Heck, I see gay non-women are allowed to have their own spaces!

It’s harmful to be treated as a monolith. I’m not attracted to men, and saying im an “exclusionist” for this is lesbophobic. I’m not evil for being exclusively attracted to non-men. I’m not evil for saying we should have our own spaces while we’d still have sapphic spaces!

Words have meanings, and the lesbian label is important to me, for all of its history and all of my struggles. I’m tired of us all being seen as “big mean lesbians who hate men” so so much. It reeks of misogyny to me.

I am heavily disappointed, and I ask everyone to please understand why bi lesbians are harmful.

I'm disappointed you've missed the point of my post. I was talking about the history of different lesbians and sapphics being excluded and hated in our community through generations. The conversation wasn't about bi lesbians specifically, it was about the butches, transfemmes, Pan/Bi, Aro/Ace, nonbinary, and countless other identities that were or ARE still considered not "valid" members of our community at point or another. I was pointing out how this "Bi Lesbian exclusion" is just a repeat of past mistakes and in the retrospective it is rooted in radfem/terf ideology that claims sapphics have to present and feel a certain way to be accepted. I didn’t say anywhere that being attracted to non-men is evil, I didn’t call anyone a “big mean lesbian”. You’re putting words into my mouth. That entire post was about defending sapphic’s right to attraction and expression.

Lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, non cis women and etc can all be oppressed, harassed, hate crimed, rejected by friends/family and other terrible things for their non heteronormative attraction.

Some people are failing to realize these exclusively “one identity spaces" they feel are being threatened don't actually exist in real life. Sure someone can have like, a "nonbinaries only" discord server or a meet up with friends who are all the the same identity. But a majority of queer spaces in real life? They don't have those rules because theres no way to separate queer identities neatly like that- There isn't a need to. You're going to find bisexuals and pansexuals and nonbinaries and trans people and all sorts of other identities at the same lesbian bar, the same sapphic support group, the same circle of friends.

So what exactly are these "spaces" that every other identity has and lesbians supposedly don't? Maybe ask why bisexuals, pansexuals, etc also being in a sapphic space feels so threatening to some in the first place? They have a right to be there as well. We are a community.

A label can be used and defined as whatever the owner of the label is comfortable with! "Lesbian" has always been an umbrella term. It can be a singular identity or it can describe any sapphic experience or it can do lots of things, labels have always been flexible in this way. Someone using the label differently than another person isn't harmful. It's expression.

1. It was on ao3, 8th year, after the war, very often the writing shifted between draco and harry's POV. Draco and theo were dating (but they breakup in the end so drarry gets together), it's also a bottom draco fic but I can't remember any specific sex scenes. Theo peer pressures draco to do pills-like drugs and latter ron mentions to harry that he saw theo and draco staring at ron weird and laughing in the hallways at night. Their relationship is toxic but I don't remember much about it, draco and harry slowly starts to become friends, it's more or less at the same rhythm as Theo and draco relationship crumbles. I remember there was a point were theo has sex with some other guy to get more drugs and draco gets upset because he was cheating but then theo says that the other guy raped him and draco is not supposed to tell anyone because he could get in trouble and harry is secretly listening to the most part of the discussion and in his head he starts to question why would nott get in trouble if he was the victim but ultimately doesn't do/say anything about it. Theo gets addicted to those drugs but I can't remember if draco get as well or not. I can't recall if someone harasses draco for being a ex death eater but the students definitely look at him, and other slytherins, differently and most of them get excluded from the rest of the school despite the majority being innocent or too young to have done anything

2. harry and draco I think were already together. But Hermione liked draco and tried to steal him from harry and either used a love potion or gave him a cookie which made him fall in love with her. Some maybe key points I remember are: Harry was thinking and out of space not listening to ron and hermione fighting, when they finally got his attention ron told him about how Hermione thought it was ok for her to flirt with draco even in front of harry. Then at some point draco came up to the three and as he left hermione kisses him on the cheek in front of harry. I read the story on Wattpad in like 2020/2021 and Im pretty sure it had chapters.

3. harry has an owl service or some delivery food service like ubereats, postmates, deliveroo and once he learned who the order was for, Harry was going to give Draco Malfoy a piece of his mind for such a request for late delivery. “ugh pure bloods and their wealth”. then unexpectedly the wards let Harry in, and then he was face to face with Draco. now I will be honest, the role of Harry and Draco could be reversed, but I don’t think so? It may feature a young Scorpius Malfoy or Teddy Lupin. rating: explicit / mature? last remember reading it on ao3. One shot, completed. Maybe apart of Harry/Draco Owlpost Fest? tags: post-war, not canon compliant?, owl, owlpost, delivery, malfoy manor, grimmauld place, order, baked goods, food service. harry and draco are like in their 20s-30s. one chapter: about 10K words

4. i’m pretty sure in this fic harry is this well known baker/pastry chef in the wizarding world, and him and draco become friends and soon start dating. draco falls in love with harry’s sweet desserts which harry claims has a “special ingredient” which he won’t tell draco until the end. that’s when they meet in harry’s pantry/bakeshop and draco soon learns harry methods to creating such desserts, especially when harry uses his magic literally and metaphorically to create a huge order for a Ministry event which make draco falls deeper for him and his special filling especially when they go to the eat and eat his home made desserts. rating: explicit / nc-17. last I remember reading it on ao3. May be apart of a Drarry fest including: H/D Erised or Food Fair or Owlpost. From 2020-present maybe? tags: post war, not canon compliant, bakery, baker, pastry chef harry, coffee shop, coffee, post hogwarts/ harry potter epilogue what epilogue, frosting, icing, innuendos, pwp, cake, batter word count, filling, cream, crème, food, euphemisms. harry and draco are like in their 20s-30s. one chapter: 10K-20K words

5. fic I read a couple months ago. I found that fic at AO3, it's a multiple chapter (I don't remember the exact number of chapters). Main couple is Drarry. The fic is not magical au, I think Harry is a university student(?) and such an extrovert slight flirty person, but he only has Hermione as his friend. Btw, in that fic, Hermione is having an affair with Remus (their professor). Harry is crushing over Draco (Draco's not a university student), he's often goes to the campus to pick up Astoria, his girlfriend at that time. One day, Astoria invite Harry to her house in order to spice up her bed activity with Draco. At first, Draco is so shocked and offended(?) with Harry's presence (Draco has a idk what to call it, i guess internalized homophobic(??) caused by his father action). But then, slowly, Draco become more intrigued to Harry. Harry also realized that Draco is not the same as what Draco show in the outside, Harry knows that Draco hide his dom side(?) to look so calm, collected, chill, and so on). I think it's save to say that there are some infidelity at that fic but at the end Draco ends his relationship with Astoria first before officially start a new one with Harry. Oh, and Astoria is kind of regret her choice introducing Harry to Draco because she kind of sad to lose Draco, but no hard feeling tho.

6. the first few chapters are poems. Draco was fleeing to the muggle world or something and Harry captured him. Harry is also an Alpha and he mated with Draco forcefully, I think in this world if one of them dies then the one mated with you can be dead too. Thank you so much, it’s on AO3 but I can’t find it.

7. looking for a fic where Draco works as a mailman or something and he plays chess with one of the elderly lady in a wizarding nursing home. The lady also gives him tips but it embarrasses him but he accepts out of necessity. Harry is an auror and a newly turned werewolf and he cannot control himself around Draco like I remember that he keeps sniffing him while they were near an elevator. I've reread this fic but I can't seem to remember the title!

8. looking for a fic i only read the synopsis for (i swear i saved it but i cant find it now) basically draco writes a letter to harry saying "I'm going to kill you" but harry misreads it as "im going to kiss you"

9. fic on ao3, it was about Draco being like a sex slave for the deatheaters, and he was held up in chains and perceiving a lot less of his surroundings due to him trying to not feel anything. The plot of the war was different, and Harry and Ron were using polyjuice to get inside the manor, then they found Draco and were surprised, but Ron did like a gesture that he would also r4pe Draco (like unzipping his pants or something) and Harry stopped him, I think Harry said to Draco that he was gonna try to set him free when they could and Draco stayed there while watching them go. I'm not sure about that last part, and I do not remember much more or maybe even he wasn't free at all at the end

10. what I remember is that Draco was held in a room at Order headquarters, I remember several members tried to visit him for questioning, including Harry. But Draco didn't reveal anything at all. Then there is a scene where Harry comes in and tells him that Lucius Malfoy is dead, Harry shows the ring as proof that he is not mistaken

11. I could be mixing up two fics. I'm pretty sure it was on AO3. It was a 4th year AU, where I believe Harry and Draco were already dating when the Tournament happened. One scene that I remember clearly is that when Harry has to do that wand thing for the tournament, his wand just doesn't want to be used by Ollivander, so it hits Ollivander in the head. Also I think that Harry and the other champions get along pretty well and ARE working together. So much so that I think that they all agree that they just don't really wanna be a part of the tournament and then they train together and everything. And if I'm not mistaken, for the second task they all decide to use a boat? To get to the Merfolk village and then just dive and get their hostage. And for the third task they were just planning on get inside the maze and do a picnic?

Just saw you're post about the some people on the pro endo comunity being agressive. And I've actually have had the opposite expirience.

The anti endos in my life irl and online are kind of really mean?

I want to have a pro endo account but I'm scared of being harassed, fakeclaimed, etc. A lot (not everyone) of the people who are anti endo are so aggressive, and I'm not in a state where I can really receive that.

Any words of encouragement or tips?

gah, memory issues so we can’t recall what post exactly you’re referring to, sorry.

here are our tips for running a pro-endo account, or some sort of account where all system origins are accepted. it got kind of long and heavy, so we’re putting it under a cut.

1) when you first set up the blog, before you’ve made any post at all, go through some of the anti-endo tags and block those users from your new side blog. some tags to trawl/search through are “#anti endo,” “#endos fuck off,” “#endos aren’t real” and “#endos are trash.” just a heads up, you may see some violent, harmful, or potentially triggering posts in those tags. if you have the energy and capabilities for it, preemptively blocking a lot of users may save you some pain and difficulties down the line.

2) you may very well be harassed or fakeclaimed by running this account. we have been fakeclaimed by others on this blog, and have had users block evade, follow us to our personal accounts, and try to purposefully trigger us. it’s been rough, but this is one of the risks of running an inclusive blog online. some things to keep in mind:

- you can block any user who sends you anonymous asks. just hit the three dots at the top right of the ask page and hit “block anonymous.”

- having anonymous asks turned off entirely could greatly reduce the potential for you to receive hate and unkind messages. personally we like to leave anons on since lots of folks prefer to send asks anonymously, but if you’re worried or nervous, you can definitely turn them off.

- delete any negative comments on your posts as soon as you notice them, and block the users who make them from your side blog. we do this to help keep our posts positive.

- if any asker threatens to dox you, sends you gore or purposefully triggering content, won’t leave you alone, or is block evading, report them to tumblr. we have had to do this before, and tumblr’s been pretty good about banning genuinely harmful or dangerous users.

3) don’t pick fights, don’t cross post into anti-endo tags, and leave anti-endos alone. we only use anti-endo tags if we are tagging a post that mentions them for filtering purposes. if you refrain from engaging with those who you don’t want interacting with you, you’re much less likely to face harassment, in our experience.

4) try to remember that everyone posting on tumblr, regardless of whether or not they are pro-endo, is a person or human being. when someone fakeclaims you or sends you hate, it is probably coming from a place of insecurity and low self-esteem. they may be lashing out as a trauma response, or they may be having difficulties regulating their emotions. none of these things are an excuse or good reason to be an asshole to others, but it is something worth keeping in mind.

when we are fakeclaimed, it is more a poor reflection on the fakeclaimers than it is on who we are as a person or system. you know yourself and your system more than anyone else online, so when you are fakeclaimed, try to just chuckle with your headmates about it, let it roll off your shoulders, and block the user.

Hi Raven! Lemme start out saying that I love your posts, they are really thought out and informative, especially with matters going on in the community. You don’t have to answer this if you're busy,but I have a question. I wanna start a Twist blog, well kinda. I wanna start posting some of my works, and kinda make a blog on my Twist OC, but I don't know where to start. If you have any tips or tricks, that would be helpful l, but if you don't have a direct answer to this, that's fine too anything will help. And another question is, how do you get over to fear of people not liking your works or even OC? I've seen quite a bit of hate in this Fandom, and idk if my sensitive heart can take it. 😅 It's kinda the reason why I've never posted at all. Thanks again.

Hello there ^^ I’m happy that you enjoy my blog and that you find my posts informative!

For general advice on starting and maintaining a writing blog, please see this post. I’m going to use the rest of this response to speak at length about the second question posed by the asker: “how do you get over the fear of people not liking your works or even OC?”

First, let’s get something out of the way: humans are inherently social creatures; therefore, it is in our nature to desire positive attention/approval and to be afraid of rejection and ostracism. There is no shame in wanting validation. It’s a built-in survival mechanism leftover from the past—because when humans band together, they are more likely to thrive. However, I also think that in the modern world, it’s easy to get carried away and care too much about what others will think of you. This is so true in the age of social media, where likes, shares, and even follows and views are quantifiable and thus can be used as a point of comparison to others on the same platform. It’s also easier than ever to connect with others, which can be both a boon (meeting people you otherwise could have never met) and a detriment (internet hate).

Now, as simple as it would be for me to say, “create for yourself rather than seek the approval of others”, that advice doesn’t actually do much for anyone. It's easy to talk the talk, but it's much harder to walk the walk. It’s all about mindset, because in actuality, a very small number of people out of the overall fandom will care about your works enough to actively hate on an individual. The mind seemingly magnifies the number because humans are hardwired to pay more attention to the negative experiences over the positive ones (which, again, is another survival instinct; you pay attention to the bad things to avoid them or to resolve the issues). There goes the saying, “we’re our own worst critics”, and it’s very true here. It’s not just negativity from others you must deal with, but self/doubt snd your own mind perpetuating the belief that the negativity is much worse than it actually is. Of course, there are actual serious cases of hate (harassment, stalking, threats, doxxing, racism, etc), but here I am only referring to general cases of other people “not liking what you make” or saying mean things (such as “you’re a bad writer”).

So how does one improve their mindset? Truth be told, it doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, learning to not care what others think of you is a difficult and lengthy process. It will take time and effort to reach a comfortable state of acceptance (and yes, I’m talking years long here)—but it is possible to grow out of that fixation.

Here are some truths you have to accept if you want to overcome your worries:

In putting your work “out there” in a public space, you will naturally invite feedback, both good and bad. An integral part of creating is, of course, wanting to share one’s creations with others. However, it’s unrealistic to think that you won’t ever get negative feedback or critique. It isn’t always constructive or helpful to you, but you must brace for them to come your way all the same. If you think about it, getting nothing but praise isn’t good either because then it traps you in a cycle of thinking you’re perfect and there’s nothing you need to improve on. It becomes an echo chamber and it can lead to stagnation because you’re already satisfied with your current state instead of thinking about how you can grow. Mixed feedback is important for personal growth.

There may not necessarily be a problem with your content, it could be a matter of differences in circumstances or tastes. You must remember that lack of engagement is not always equivalent to hate. Indifference or not even coming into contact with a post is NOT the same as actively going to post a negative comment or ask. That being said, lack of engagement could be the result of a website’s algorithm working against your favor. Alternatively, it could be that you aren’t hitting a target audience. Like, if you write angst, it may not appeal to a certain subsection of fans. These are factors largely outside of your control, and trying to gain that control would be a fruitless effort.

There’s nothing wrong with blocking, especially if things escalate. I know that on sites like Twitter and Tiktok, blocking people is seen as “taboo” or some kind of hateful social statement when… it’s not. Blocking is a means of curating your space so you can have fun online without worrying about others raining on your parade. If people are giving you a hard time, nothing is stopping you from blocking them (which can be done even with anonymous asks). Don’t give people that send “hate” attention by responding and showing just how upset their comments made you, it only encourages them to continue once they’ve seen how much it affects you.

One instance of “hate” is not representative of the entire fandom’s feelings. This circles back to what I said before; the negative and toxic people in this fandom is actually minuscule when compared to the total number of fans in this space. Instead of letting the few rotten apples define the entire bushel, think about all the positive experiences you’ve had!

You can’t please everyone. As much as you try to, it won’t happen. But you know what is much more feasible of a goal? Pleasing yourself. You know what you like best, and if you’re able to make what makes you happy then you have a 100% chance of satisfying at least one person.

If you feel frustrated, it’s fine!! It’s normal to feel this way when you think a work you shared isn’t getting the kind of exposure you want it to (whether it’s little exposure or negative exposure). We want to feel like our energy and time was put into something worthwhile. Just don’t take it too hard because these things are bound to happen. Not everything you make will be a hit, and your audience may not always be receptive to what you put out.

If you create mainly or solely for the approval of others, you won’t be happy with yourself. Ask yourself why you want to create in the first place. Most likely it’s because you’re passionate about TWST and/or you just wanted to have fun. But when this shifts to a focus on pleasing others, is it really fun anymore? If you’re always chasing trends (which are very transient) or thinking about how you should change your work to have greater mass appeal, is it really “you”, or are you just being what you think people want you to be? It just results in never being satisfied, because you’re aiming for the impossibility of making everyone happy. When you weigh your worth based on others’ perception of you or on engagement, you run the risk of burnout and losing joy in creating.

You’ll have to embrace cringe. When I say “cringe”, I mean it in the sense that you should be comfortable being your authentic self even if you fear people won’t like it. Again, you cannot please everyone—but surely there will be people who will accept you and like you for who you are. Some will vibe with you, some won’t, and that’s a fact.

You won’t be perfect at keeping out negativity from others, and that’s okay. What matters is how you address those instances when they arise. It’s not productive to let negative thoughts stew or hold you back from creating what you want. Instead of letting the thoughts fester, try to redirect your energy to something else.

Additionally, here are some suggestions on what you can do to alleviate your doubts. These methods work for me, but I’m not going to claim they work for everyone; I figured I’d just throw the ideas out there in case they’d be helpful to others.

Isolate yourself from social media for a period of time until you're in a better headspace.

An alternative to social media isolation is looking at other people's creations (but ignoring the numbers, as that can be a basis for comparison)! It may inspire you to make something of your own. For example, sometimes I've been scrolling and I'd see someone's OC in their own outfit for an event like Fairy Gala, and that made me excited to do the same for my own characters.

Another alternative to social media isolation is looking at the positives! Think about the number of people who have supported you or left nice comments and how they outweigh the Negative Nancies. (This is an example of using the numbers to your advantage!) I know of some friends who use a special tag on their blogs to denote "feel good" asks so they can reference these to cheer up when they're feeling discouraged or down.

Rather than comparing yourself to others, compare yourself to... yourself! Treat it like a New Year's resolution: you're looking back at where you started and think considering how you've changed since then.

Do something else you love to get your attention away from your creative endeavors. This could be another hobby or spending time with friends or family.

Speaking of friends and family, talk to them! Let them know how you're feeling and why you're feeling this way. They can offer you support and advice. I find that this is especially helpful when you are able to speak with other content creators, who may be able to empathize with your experiences.

Practice mindfulness and gratitude. Instead of thinking about what you don't have, think about what you do have and be appreciative of it. This helps shift the center away from things out of your control (ie other people) and to something that is within your control (ie yourself).

Minimize taking things personally. This can be especially hard in cases of OCs because creators tend to put a lot of themselves into their OCs (particularly if they are self inserts or Yuusonas)—so when others say they don't like an OC, it can feel like an indirect way of saying "I don't like you, the creator". But rarely is this the intended meaning of a comment. When people say they don't like something, it doesn't always mean they also dislike the creator. Remember that at the end of the day, we're all internet strangers that don't know each other on a deeply personal level (so why should you hinge your self-worth on such a thing?). You can be close with your works and OCs, but don't necessarily think of the works/OCs as a 1:1 extension of yourself. When you think of it like that, it helps to detach yourself from negativity that a work may receive.

Think about what you’re good at and focus on that niche. In this way, you will be able to make what you want while also attracting an audience that also appreciates this niche over time.

Make something for yourself, no posting necessary! Sometimes it can help you air out your feelings if you make a piece (art, writing, etc.) for no one but yourself to see. It’s surprisingly very therapeutic.

With all of that being said, I’d like to close off this post by saying that conquering the fear of others negatively judging your works is something that all creators have to go through. We're at various stages in this process, and we will continue to have our moments of weakness. This is a completely normal thing (though it is perhaps not commonly discussed out in the open) and it should be normalized. Even I go through periods of self-doubt and find myself holding off on posting certain pieces (especially anything that is OC-related) because I overthink how they may be perceived. I know that most of my audience is here for the canon TWST characters, so I worry that posting OC content is self-indulgent, maybe even selfish if I'm feeling particularly mean toward myself on a given day. It's negative self-talk like this that can be detrimental to creators and their enjoyment of their craft; that's why it's important to identify these moments and try to figure out ways to overcome them, even if it's just taking little baby steps. Some progress is better than no progress!

Part 5*, AKA Don’t Write Legal Threat Letters Alleging Defamation If You Want to Pretend Later That You Haven’t Read the Allegedly Defamatory Claims

This entry is going to be a bit different from the previous ones. I am going to look at a response to an ask that Flamethrower posted on her tumblr, which is not (directly) related to AO3. Rather, I want to focus on the rhetoric and persuasive strategies she is using, and analyze her response as an example of (attempted) manipulation and disinformation.

Before we begin, however: this question and response deals with accusations of antisemitism by Flamethrower. I am not Jewish myself, and am not qualified to comment on whether her fic is antisemitic, although I can and do condemn the responses she gave to people who attempted to raise their concerns with her. You can read about the accusations against her here, including following the citation links to see what her accusers have to say in their own words and the documentation they provide.

*If you are just joining us: Flamethrower is a relatively BNF in several fandoms who was briefly suspended from AO3 this summer for repeatedly monetizing her fanfiction on the site. She threw a social media fit about her suspension, in the midst of which several old and new accusations of bigotry against her circulated, and her former roommate posted accusations of extremely serious interpersonal abuse against her. This December, Flamethrower posted a hilariously bad attempt at a legal threat letter that was explicitly against the OTW and indirectly against the former roommate. You can read my previous write-ups on the AO3 situation and legal threats here and here, and a link to the interpersonal abuse accusations against her here and here.

Before we get into Flamethrower’s response: this is a terrible question. I am going to move forward under the assumption that this is a genuine question from a sincere person (referred to as “discord anon” from here on out), but regardless of who asked it or why, it is a bad question.

This question essentially says, “hey, people are saying bad things against you. I’m not going to give you any specifics, but respond to the accusation that you have done Bad Thing.”

Don’t go into someone’s inbox and do this. Even if you mean well, this is a shitty thing to do. To see why, let’s run through some possibilities:

The person you are asking had no idea people were saying they had done Bad Thing. Now, you have informed them that people are talking about them behind their back (always feels bad) and not given them the opportunity to actually meaningfully respond, or even told them what the accusation was about. If Flamethrower had no idea people were saying her fic was antisemitic (she does; more on that below), this gives her no opportunity to actually meaningfully respond to the accusation, either to rebut it or to acknowledge her error, because it doesn’t say WHAT people are saying is antisemitic in her fic.

The person you are asking has not done Bad Thing, and this is part of a harassment campaign against them. Now, that is absolutely not the case here (again, more on that below), but it does happen and is something to watch out for. In a case where there was a harassment campaign against a writer, a question like this would inadvertently contribute to that campaign; even if it means well and is genuine, it is one more thing to deal with, one more reminder of the rumors people are spreading.

The person actually has done Bad Thing, and is running a disinformation DARVO campaign accusing her accusers of harassment. Because the question asker fails to give specifics, Flamethrower can use this question as an opportunity to (1) preempt and prime her followers who might otherwise encounter accusations of antisemitism (or other accusations of bigotry and abuse) against her and 2) make herself look like victim of harassment campaign as suggested in the scenario above.

With that necessary aside out of the way, let’s analyze Flamethrower’s response. There are two target audiences for a text like this: 1) new or relatively distant readers and fans who are unaware of all of the background I linked above, like discord anon, and 2) current friends and followers who are aware of (at least some of) the background context.

I don’t know what might have happened to Flamethrower’s post here, but just in case it happens to you: as someone who write way-too-long essays on tumblr, I’ve had the site crash, freeze, and fail in various ways while drafting posts. At least recently, however, tumblr has been really great about automatically saving drafts as I go, and so I rarely lose more than a paragraph when it does. If this happens to you, try heading over to your drafts page, and see if your post (or most of your post) is still in there.

Now, that said…I don’t want to accuse Flamethrower of lying here. Like I said, I’ve had tumblr crash on me a bunch, and I’ve lost posts (or thought I’ve lost posts), and tumblr is notorious for acting up in various ways. So I normally would have no problem believing it had eaten her post. But I’m struggling with her explanation that she had copied what’s below as part of a longer post. Because to me, and you can judge for yourself, it doesn’t read like a section of a longer post. And to the extent that there is missing information that one might expect - for example, direct responses to the specific allegations of antisemitism that she knows about - it’s really weird to post a response without a least a line directly addressing those accusations, even if that line is just a brief refutation.

In practice, beginning her response with this paragraph (even if it is true), serves the purpose of manipulating the audience to allow her to maintain a useful illusion of ignorance of the claims against her, preempt criticism, and suggest that she has more evidence and knowledge than she really does. By stating that she had a longer post that contained more information, she can decline to address the specific allegations of antisemitism against her, thereby maintaining the illusion that she does not know about them/they don’t exist. However, if that illusion ceases to be useful to her - for example, if a follower questions why she didn’t specifically address the allegations in the fanlore page - she can assert that she *did* address those allegations, it was just eaten by tumblr. Likewise, any criticism about gaps in her response, or even the framing of her response, can be explained away after the fact by asserting that she did include any missing information, or that the person critiquing her response is just missing context that she originally included. And it allows her to maintain both an air of being very well informed and a source of education (“a nice long and informative response”) without demonstrating or imparting actual knowledge, and the suggestion that she has Secret Documentation to back up all of her claims of abuse and harassment.

The defense to these manipulations is to recognize that she did not have to post anything in response to this ask, and she choose to post the response that she did. For example, as I already noted, if she knows about specific allegations of antisemitism against her, she deliberately choose not to respond to those specifics, even if only with a brief sentence.

And she DOES know the specifics of those allegations. Her previously posted legal threat letter, which she wrote herself, specifically alleged that her fanlore page was defamatory. In order to make that claim, she must have read her fanlore page and the sources it cited - included the allegations of antisemitic content and behavior linked above. So unless she wants to try to claim that she sent a legal threat letter alleging defamation without knowing what the alleged defamatory content said,* she is deliberately avoiding addressing any of those specifics. This includes the fact that she is pretending the antisemitism allegations are solely about the content of her fics, when even a quick glance at the allegations shows that the much more serious claims are not about what she wrote, but how she responded to the people who tried to correct her or raise concerns.

*legal note: you don’t want to try to make this claim

So this starts with an outright lie. Flamethrower has absolutely deleted posts before. This is a manipulation tactic that hits differently depending on which audience category a person falls into. If you are a new reader like discord anon, it is designed to build trust and suggest transparency. If you are a current follower, it serves to either (ironically) gaslight you into distrusting your own memory/other people who show you she has deleted posts, or to put you in a position where you either challenge the lie (and thus risk alienation from her/her friends & fans) or accept the lie, thereby potentially helping establish a pattern where you get used to mentally accepting and excusing her lies and misinformation.

Second, the idea of her tumblr existing “to stand as a public record” is just bizarre. Even just scrolling down a few posts, it’s clear that she’s not using it as some sort of record - she’s using like a personal tumblr blog: posting responses to asks, posting and reblogging fandom material, and reblogging other posts and pictures she (presumably) likes. And the invitation to “peruse the whole of [her] Tumblr” is ludicrous. While I am sympathetic in principle to the difficulty of trying to respond to an accusation without specifics, “just read everything I’ve every posted and reblogged for the last nine years” is not a reasonable response.

It is a response that is designed to sound to readers such as discord anon like she is being open and transparent, but it is worse than useless as a practical response. Meanwhile, for her established followers, it serves to suggest that they don’t need to consider new perspectives or accusations because surely they would have noticed any antisemitic behavior by her in the past.

Third, I have to note the insertion of her medical issues into the discussion. This isn’t necessarily a sign of malice or deliberate manipulation - I talk about being autistic a lot, because it is part of my constant daily life - but there is no need to mention it here, as it is irrelevant to the ask and adds no relevant context to the answer. But from the perspective of either a new reader or an old follower, the effect could be to gain sympathy for her and make her seem more vulnerable to harassment.

There are aspects of this part of her post that seem reasonable on the surface, as a response to the question asked. Since discord anon didn’t give specifics, under normal circumstances, a response directing the asker to discuss the issue with Jewish folks seems appropriate and sensitive.

Unfortunately, here’s where we need to address some of the specifics of the accusations against Flamethrower. One of claims, backed up by screenshots, is that when a Jewish fan attempted to correct a transliteration error in her fic, Flamethrower responded in part by claiming that a Jewish friend told her she was right and referred to that person as her “Jewish sidekick.” And in response to further asks about a different issue that bothered at least a few Jewish fans, she included a long non-sequitur about how the “only family I have left who will claim me with love and without judgement is Jewish.” Together, these responses indicate a pattern of using the fact that she has Jewish friends and followers as a distraction, a defense, and a weapon against people, especially other Jewish people, who have concerns about how she depicts Jewish people in her work.

I would give her the benefit of the doubt in this case, again, because of the vagueness of the accusation, if she had just listed people that discord anon could reach out to. But the fact that she thought it was important to include a sentence about her “Jewish bestie,” who is currently unavailable, makes it clear that this paragraph is actually an attempt to claim that she can’t have antisemitic elements in her work because some of her best friends and fans are Jewish!!! This is gross, and I shouldn’t have to explain how and why this is a shitty manipulation tactic.

What is a little more pernicious in this section is her reference to these fans as “Actual Jewish People.” The emphasis she places on this suggests that anyone who might be claiming there is antisemitism in her work isn’t actually Jewish.

The other bit of manipulation going on in this section is that although she frames her response as giving permission for her Jewish followers to comment, by doing so explicitly and publicly, she is indirectly putting pressure on them to comment and affirm their belief that there is nothing antisemitic in her work. This is worth noting in part due to the nature of the abuse allegations against her, because publicly commenting in defense of her like this can help create a sense of connection and entanglement with her, that could make it harder for someone to leave her sphere of influence.

And here’s where the subtle attempts at manipulation become explicit. I struggled to write this section because this passage from Flamethrower’s response made me so angry.

Ok. So, here’s what’s going on here. Discord anon has written in with a question about potential antisemitism in Flamethrower’s works. Even through she knows what the specific allegations against her are, Flamethrower has answered the question in a way that allows her to pretend that she doesn’t, and that all the allegations are just about the content of her fic, not about her response to Jewish critics. At the same time, she is hiding behind Jewish friends and fans in a way that lets her pretend she is only elevating Jewish voices, while she implies that anyone who disagrees with her isn’t actually Jewish. She then links to a write up about gaslighting and implies to discord anon, and to anyone else reading this post - new fans and current followers alike - that the people telling them that there are issues with her or her work are potentially abusers who are gaslighting them, who they need protection from (so come speak to her friends instead! They are safe!).

This is cult shit.

This is pure manipulation, designed to try to funnel vulnerable fans and followers away from people who might criticize her, and toward people (and into spaces*) where she is in control of the narrative.

*EDITED TO ADD: To drive this point home: Between my drafting this analysis and posting it, Flamethrower has publicly posted her fan discord and advertised it as a "fan-safe space" where "anyone is welcome."

The first two sentences are a common (and highly effective) manipulation tactic. The response applies pressure and fear by suggesting that people are lying about Flamethrower and trying to manipulate folks like discord anon against her, that these people are a danger to discord anon and are trying to abuse them, and then appears to offer a release valve from that pressure, a place of safety. Flamethrower won’t force them to make a decision! Flamethrower recognizes their autonomy and their intelligence! Flamethrower is someone safe!

…ignore, of course, that until Flamethrower raised it, no one was suggesting that discord anon was being forced to make a decision. This is a clear example of someone trying to build other people’s trust and reliance on them by creating an external threat, and then offering themselves as a solution to the threat they themselves created.

Then, in the rest of the paragraph, Flamethrower begins to explicitly create the external threat that she had previously implied existed. She starts by asserting that she has a bunch of facts and evidence about something that she has been “kind enough” not to post. This creates the sense that she has proof of the claims that she is about to make, while building in an explanation of why she never actually provides that proof. It isn’t that she can’t prove her claims, it's that she is such a good person that she refuses to. (Incidentally, this also works as manipulation toward current followers who might want to criticize her or try to leave her orbit. First, it creates a sense of sympathy for her - she’s a good person, so why would you treat her badly and criticize her? - and second, it carries the implicit threat that she might have Secret Evidence that she can use to hurt you.

And here’s where she completes her manipulation and disinformation. In the space of eight short paragraphs, she has moved the discussion from being about whether or not some of her fanfic might contain antisemitic elements, to a massive harassment campaign against her. These last two paragraphs are full of lies, but the previous paragraphs have built up a base to manipulate her audience into being more receptive to those lies.

(And just to be clear: this *is* all lies. The antisemitism allegations date back to at least 2017. There is no evidence of any kind of coordinated campaign against her - a bunch of people laughed at her tantrum over her AO3 suspension, in the midst of that her roommate decided to come out about her allegations of abuse in part because Flamethrower was blaming her for the suspension, and the old allegations of bigotry gained new circulation and audience in conjunction with the new allegations. And as far as any “ongoing multiple death threats” are concerned, the only evidence of this seems to be a trickle of “kys”-style anon messages, which is shitty, but also fairly typical of having a moderate platform on tumblr and refusing to turn anon off.)

She starts with the suggestion that she is transparent and open, and has always been transparent and open, and is also disabled and vulnerable (while attempting to leave herself wiggle room out of any critiques of this post by making sure her readers know that most of her original post was deleted by tumblr). She pretends that the accusations against her have nothing to do with her behavior, only with the content of her fic. She sets up the idea that accusations of antisemitism have “nothing to do” with actual concerns about antisemitism by listing a bunch of her Jewish friends and fans and hiding behind them, and suggesting that no real Jewish people have criticized her. She seeds the idea that other people are trying to gaslight discord anon, her fans, her followers, and herself, creating a sense of a threat, of people who are out to get her (and you!!!) .And she has stated she has evidence of who and what is behind all of this, but set up an excuse as to why she can’t actually show any of that evidence.

And she ties everything up by creating a conspiracy to preempt her audience - new fans and old followers - from believing or trusting the abuse allegations against her, by turning it all into one big coordinated campaign to harass her. She is twisting allegations of abuse against her to create an imaginary harassment campaign, and using that to attempt to discredit accusations of antisemitism.

Indeed, you can see in some of her followers’ responses to her post that she successfully managed to portray, to them, the allegations against her as only relating to the content of her fic, rather than her behavior, and downplay the allegations of abuse against her into “drama” in which she is the victim.

She claims at the start that tumblr deleted most of her response. I don’t know what could have possibly been in the rest of her planned response that would have excused this behavior.

Finally, to end on a humorous note, here’s her tags to this nonsense. As I’ve laid out above, this response does a lot to try to create a sense of threat and fear in the audience, and these tags are clearly part of an attempt to create fear in her accusers by suggesting that Something Scary will be done to them (in this case, criminal prosecution) and to create a veneer of authority in her follower’s minds by pretending she knows Legal Stuff.

However, as someone with distance from her, and who is actually familiar with the topic she is trying to claim authority on? I have been wandering around all day repeating “FEDERAL CRIMES” and collapsing into giggles. She doesn’t know what she is talking about, and the sense of fear she is creating is built on sand.

On a surface level I get why people send anon hate, but would it be true to say someone sending hate and personal attacks is always projecting? I’m trying to imagine a well-adjusted person who is just mean sending “your writing is horrible and you’re so annoying, please stop.” or an anon suicide baiting for [insert righteous cause here], and I can’t do it.

I bring this up because I’m not sure what’s the best response to it. Do I point out that they are a projecting, miserable loser for sending it? Do I ignore it? I don’t think there’s a right answer but I worry about pissing someone off, even though you can block the asker, there are some people who are extremely dedicated to harassment.

A lot of this is being sad that some people have been harassed off tumblr, and another part is from watching a friend having to deal with a shit stain Machiavellian-level stalker/harasser irl.

No amount of harassment someone faces is their fault, yet I find myself wanting to know more about the psychology of anon hate to know what I’m dealing with, and what sort of mitigation can be done.

Who is BS?

Unfortunately, I’m being vague for a reason, when it comes to someone who’s got a history of extreme harassment going back almost two decades. (Especially when it comes to anonymous askers, no offence meant.) The situation is really, really worrying to me, and I hope that the person in question has moved past the patterns that they have been in for years. The new friends in question really don’t deserve the potential danger and I do believe that people can do better and should be allowed to. So given that the options are either that I am worrying about nothing and BS has changed (which would be really good), I don’t want to bring harassment to anyone, or, I’m right to worry, I don’t want that harassment personally.
