GMMTV’S “SNEAKY” MARKETING

I’ve never really looked closely at those trending posts GMMTV puts out but something about the design of the one for “Leap Day” amused me, so I wanted to break it down for fun.

Since GMMTV is a management company, they have to regularly promote their artists—and by proxy the series they’re in—to potential advertisers. According to Tha, they used to do this by showing advertisers the TV ratings and viewing numbers for a series, but times have changed, and now advertisers are asking for Online Engagement Numbers. Trends, especially.

So, check this out with me:

(This isn’t to pick on “Leap Day,” it’s just the post that caught my attention.)

The top numbers are Twitter trends for the hashtag #LeapDaySeries. That’s common, and I’ve seen that before.

What amuses me is that “2.6M+ views in 24 hours” bit, because that made me go, “Whoa, really?” I know GMMTV series tend not to get 1M+ views on YouTube overnight, so I went to check.

192k views is not 2.6M+ views.

So you read the fine print beneath the giant red numbers:

And then I thought, “Oooh, sneaky.” Because how are you counting that 2.6M+ exactly? What does “all online platforms” mean? Which platforms? Are you counting views on reposted videos also? How many views are repeat users?

It’s clever, because in all likelihood, GMMTV’s hoping all advertisers care about is the big red number and not how they got it.

Part of me wonders if they’re obfuscating the numbers because other management companies are starting to challenge them. IDOLFactory and Domundi make fewer series, but they’re starting to produce better quality series.

And just yesterday, an interview with KristSingto was released where they said they’re conscious that they’re in an era now where consumers are spoiled for choice, so they’re determined to keep the quality of what they produce as a khuujin. SOTUS might have ushered in the Thai QL wave, but they have no illusions or goal of taking the top spot again. They’re happy to create quality series for anyone who loves them.

Of course, GMMTV is under Grammy, which is a massive corporation that gives them a good deal of resources and clout, but they nearly went bankrupt once (only rescued by SOTUS), so they’re not invulnerable.

One of my main criticisms of GMMTV is that they’ve started churning out dozens of series in the apparent hope that one or two will be a viral hit, but the quality overall of what they create has dropped, and I hear more and more international fans starting to equate GMMTV with poor quality series. Personally, I only ever see about three pilot teasers with promise from any given GMMTV showcase, and of those three, maybe two of them will follow through on their potential.

It’s all about the bottom line, but there’s more than one way to get there. GMMTV’s seems to be mass series production, top spender events, merchandise, and online platform subscriptions. Which makes for good business, but not so great for the quality of their series’ storytelling, directing, acting, visuals, sound, etc.

There will always be plenty of viewers who want the eye candy first and queer representation second (if at all), so GMMTV doesn’t necessarily need high quality series. If they throw two half-naked men onscreen and have them sell a bit of sunscreen or a printer, the trends will soar.

Since GMMTV is just the management side, the quality of their actors’ series is down to the actual production teams. Like I love to say, Waa knew “Be My Favorite” wasn’t going to soar in the trends, but it was a passion project for him, so he and his writing team took their time with it. As a result, BMF is one of the best series I’ve seen from GMMTV. But, in the year and change since BMF aired, you almost never hear about it.

That’s because, presumably, there’s no benefit to GMMTV acknowledging a series starring a pair who aren’t an official khuujin with merchandise and events. Even though it’s an incredible series on every measurable scale, “Be My Favorite” isn’t GMMTV’s success: it’s the production team’s. I used to be annoyed with GMMTV for essentially pretending it doesn’t exist, but I just had to remind myself over and over that they’re a management company, not a studio. Krist is already in their most legendary khuujin, so it benefits them to pretend the blip where he worked with someone else never happened. I get it.

But also, watch “Be My Favorite” because Waa is an incredible director and he really outdid himself with it.

Aaanyway, I guess I just wanted to ramble about the business side of BL for a bit.

So we are in this clown car together because I think Mandee (Domundi's umbrella company) might have picked this show up, which it did with To Be Continued, so the pilot had to be refilmed.

Let's see how close we are when we get that pilot trailer . . . again.

Hi Petty, a while back you commented on one of my old Fourever You Project updates saying that Cooheart was hanging out with Domundi guys. Can I ask where did you find that info? I am not really good at looking up these kind of things and I am trying to follow a hunch.

Oh, buddy, follow me down the yellow brick road of ridiculousness, so you can see just how crazy I really am.

So the only real evidence is Earth's insta! [Link] It was a Crocs event, but New (the director of We Are and possibly Fourever You) was there too with the newest generation of Domundi boys.

However, New has been showing up in several of Earth's photos like this recent one from last week, so no big deal.

And this Crocs event was during Songkran when everyone was hanging out with everyone casually, so it's shouldn't be a big deal because the Twitter folks claimed Earth was hanging out with his bestie Isbanky (and his boyfriend, Mos, which Earth has stated several times in videos with Isbanky) but Earth had to do his event, so no pictures have surfaced of them all together, just very blurry videos, so Isbanky and Mos were hanging with GMMTV's Joong and Domundi's James, but Joong knows everyone and he had a public back-and-forth with James on Insta(?) trying to get James to go with him to this event, so the Domundi connection doesn't run directly to Earth here.

But Earth was also chilling with Tutor and Nat at an event late last year, which also isn't a big deal since BL Land is small and everyone knows everyone.

Like Fort used to be Earth's manager or something, so, once, again, "small world"

So everything is no big deal and nothing truly sticks out except it feels like when Barcode showed up with all the Domundi guys in that one video and then we found out he signed with a management group that also manages Domundi events after leaving Be On Cloud.

So for Earth, our Cooheart, to just be chillin' with the newest Domundi boys, so new in fact that I don't even know their names because they are sooo fresh (sorry lady who Cooheart even cropped out of the photo), and Director New feels slightly odd, right?

Twitter and Reddit folks knew Net's new partner was JJ months before it was announced due to some vague comment Net made at an event about his newest partner "hopefully" being younger and someone he knew, then Net liked a picture of JJ with his brother on Insta, and the BL Streets KNEW it was him!

So as much as I'd like to be dismissive and say an event picture is just an event picture, the Twitter and Reddit folks GOT time, and if they say something is sus, it's sus.

❗️ MaxNat have announced that they will be reprising their roles as Sun and Nuea from the show Y-Destiny (2021) in a series of 10 episodes à 15-20 minutes. The show is set to air in early 2025, further details are unknown.

❗️ Domundi announced a second season for their reality show DMD Friendship with the title DMD Friendship: It Takes Two. A new generation of 7 trainees are competing for the lead role(s) in Domundi's next BL. The contestants will stay in a house where they compete in a series of missions while working on their chemistries in the search for a partner they are compatible with. The show will premiere on October 6th.

As you all know, my novel "When I Wanna Be a YouTuber Competing with My Ex-Boyfriend" is being adapted into a series by Domundi TV. I wanted to share my feelings a bit before the pilot is released. I'm so excited and nervous about how it will turn out. When I finally saw it, I was even more thrilled! I love the camera angles, the overall tone, and the chemistry between the actors.

Actually, I intended this story to be about a healthy relationship without many complex issues. It's a slice-of-life story that I hope will make readers feel warm inside and bring a smile to their faces. In the pilot, Tle and First One acted so adorably, making the audience happy and feel the butterflies. I saw some chemistry between them since I started following them.

Tle is very handsome and has this aura of warmth and romance. His eye expressions are amazing, making it believable that he can make Khun blush for sure! (haha) He also plays guitar and sings beautifully, which is perfect for the role of Khun In.

First One's acting is so cute and clear, every single bit of it! His smile is lovely, and he's adorable when he talks. He's such an endearing person. His dramatic scenes and emotional scenes are also well done and impactful. He's also a great singer. I'm really looking forward to the scene where they get to sing together; it must be amazing!

Last night, I heard him say on stage that Khun's character is difficult to play because it's older than him. For me, I like both InTouch and Khun in his version. If they had a serious workshop before filming the series, they would definitely be able to connect with the characters and act even better. I'm sending them a lot of support! Keep fighting! Next, the roles of Tee Rak and Pluem were a big surprise! I just found out when I saw the pilot that it's Jem and Earth! In the novel, Tee Rak is prominent in protecting his older brother and doesn't tolerate anyone messing with him. His love interest only appears briefly because I'm writing a separate story about them. Jem acted so cute and mischievous, with some funny moments. When he acts with First One, it must be so adorable! These two brothers are quite sweet together because they're very close.

As for Earth, his emotional scenes are so good and his acting is captivating. I love the flashback scene to their school days; it's so cute! In the story, Pluem's character is the most dramatic and complex. I'm waiting to see how it will turn out in the series, and I'm also looking forward to seeing the other actors.

This novel is very dear to me. I created every character and every scene with great care. Watching the eight-minute pilot, I felt so happy! I'm also glad that everyone likes it and wants to see more.

The production company and the team have been in contact with the scriptwriters, discussing some adjustments to the script and asking for some minor details from the novel. I believe the series will turn out great.
