In cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute, in 2022 Mattel created a four-doll set they called the Eco Leadership Team.

The dolls were made of recycled plastic* (much like the Jane Goodall Inspiring Women doll) and represented a Renewable Energy Engineer, a Conservation Scientist, a Chief Sustainability Officer, and an Environmental Advocate.

Oh yes, Mattel has produced a Barbie who is canonically a protestor.

There is a lot to like about this dollset: Mattel is representing women in STEM fields, Mattel is making an effort to produce more sustainable Barbies, and Mattel is actively encouraging their target audience to take an active interest in creating positive change in their community.

On the other hand...

Remember that asterisk above?

That should read *Hair and face excluded. Those parts were not recycled. And although this set is a certified carbon neutral product, per the back of the box, most Barbies are not.

I am not questioning that I think it was right for Mattel to produce this product and I think it's great in many ways, but I think perhaps Mattel as a corporation could be doing a little more.

Synopsis ⊹

Morphine is popular. No surprise, but with popularity comes impersonators. One day, Morphine runs into one. Not one online, or one who got everything wrong, a copy. A carbon copy. Everything was correct. They even sounded like her. What the actual fuck? But moving in, she gets a message. What is it now?

A copy. So perfect and so accurate, it was insane. Morphine wondered, how? How is this possible? Not in a shocked or scared way, in a way..more like she was curious. Wondering about how someone or something could imitate her so perfectly. This was the only thought on her mind as the impersonator stares into her eyes. Maybe this was just a creative invention. Truly, she should be admiring how amazing it is. And that’s what she was doing. She analyzed every inch of it. Truly beautiful.

Eventually, though, her time was up. She has to get going. Iodine brushed past the impersonated and headed to the convention. A text message came up,

[MAGICAM] NEW MESSAGE REQUEST!

Of course, Morphine thought, sighing to herself, she opened the notification to see someone called ‘Gloomurai’ had requested to message her. He was quite popular in the gaming community, with what Iodine had gathered. His name was Idia and he was from NRC.

[DollSet]: Who is this?

Morphine hit sent. Within no time at all, she got a response.

[Gloomurai]: Hey. Heard u were coming to the Doll convention right??

[DollSet]: Correct.

[Gloomurai]: Cool, I’m going 2 wanna meet?

Morphine sighs, she responds with a ‘Sure!’ And their meet was set. Sadly, she wasn’t as excited as she pretended to be through text.

Once she set up her stand, she noticed Idia at his own stand, he seemed to be shaking like crazy. Ah, that’s what they had in common.

Introverted.

She got up and went to his stand,

“Hi! Is this Gloomurai?” She asked politely, immediately Idia jumped up and squeaked,

“Eek—! I-I meant— y-yeah—! That’s m-me..” Morphine chuckles. For some reason, right after that Idia’s face turned red.

Introverts.

okay. i bought the big encanto dollsets from both jakks pacific and the disney store so here’s a big giant doll comparison post! 

Putting this under a cut bc it’s gonna be LONG

First of all I want to say I adore all of these dolls and think they’re all great options. The sculpts are all gorgeous, however I prefer the faceups on the jakks pacific dolls, and I prefer the clothing and articulation that the disney store dolls have. 

For these comparisons the jakks pacific dolls are on the left and the disney store dolls are on the right

Isabela: 

jakks pacific isa is just slightly taller. The disney store isa has a better dress overall especially since it has the individual layers, however the top of the jakks pacific isa’s dress fits closer to the dress in the movie and I prefer the tulle that jakks pacific used. It’s also important to not that if you buy the individual jakks pacific isabela that her dress DOES come with layers, but the 4 pack doll has the printed on ones you see here. Also the disney store isa’s dress is completely glittery so keep that in mind. 

Both sculpts are very faithful to isabela’s movie model, skin color, and hair color. I prefer jakks pacific’s faceup slightly more because she has the darker brown eyes she has in the movie and her eyebrows are darker and blockier like they are in the movie. 

Both dolls have a twist in their hair underneath their flowers. Jakks pacific isa has a clip with two flowers, disney store isa has a comb featuring one big flower and three tiny ones. Note: the comb on the disney store one is very rubbery with big prongs and it can be very difficult to put back in the hair if it comes out.

Jakks pacific isa has molded-on earings that are painted entirely gold while disney store isa has removable earrings that are painted gold and blue. 

Jakks pacific isabela has much longer hair, but I prefer the styling of the disney store doll because it has a nice little flip at the bottom. Both dolls had absolutely ridiculous amounts of hair gel in their hair that had to be wet after I brushed their hair because it discolors the hair as soon as you brush it. You might want to opt for washing the gel out entirely.

Both shoes are similar rubbery materials and the sculpts are both very nice, but the disney store has the details painted on the shoes.

Mirabel:

Overall, disney store mirabel has the better dress. The material is very soft and though the details are all printed they’re all a lot clearer than the jakks pacific printing. Her little embroidered butterfly on her neckline is made out of plastic so it gives it that 3d effect it has in the movie. 

I by far prefer the jakks pacific faceup and hair. I think the faceup looks a lot closer to mirabel. The disney store eye color is just slightly too light while the jakks pacific one matches a lot closer and i also prefer the positioning of her irises on the jakks pacific doll. I also think the freckles on the jakks pacific doll look a lot more subtle and more natural. 

Neither doll’s hair matches movie mirabel entirely, but this is understandable since short curly hair on dolls is always going to poof out more than it would on an actual human or character’s head. Jakks pacific mirabel has a texture that matches her movie hair much closer and i love the little curl on her forehead that they gave her in lieu of her bang curl that would have been more complicated to pull off on a doll. Disney store mirabel has a much tighter curl pattern that doesn’t quite match her movie hair and they gave her no bang curls at all. It’s also very coated in gel and trying to manipulate the hair into laying down in different ways will cause the gel to discolor the hair. I also found while trying to give her a little bang curl that she’s kind of sparsely rooted which was disappointing to me. 

The one thing the disney store wins in this category is the glasses and earrings. Jakks pacific has the regular basic plastic frame you’d expect to find on a doll, but the disney store has what i assume is metal frames with actual lenses in them. Once again jakks pacific has molded on earrings while disney store has removable.

shoes, once again disney store has the details painted while jakks pacific does not. 

Antonio:

Disney store antonio has the better outfit, with an actual necktie and a removable vest! 

I didn’t take a lot of pictures of him because he’s small and easy to condense into just one picture. Both faceups I find good, I prefer the darker eyes of the jakks pacific doll of course. 

I prefer the hair on the jakks pacific doll since it’s slightly shorter and holds its shape better. The disney store hair is pretty all over the place and i did have to manipulate it with a comb to get to to sit where it was supposed to. It’s also VERY gel heavy, and was stuck to the plastic when I took him out of the box which further messed up his hairstyle. 

Luisa: 

The disney store luisa’s outfit is an actual two piece set, and the cut of the blouse is BEAUTIFUL. She also has elastic wristbands which jakks pacific luisa has molded on ones. 

I think both sculpts and faceups are absolutely GORGEOUS. Both of these dolls are what drove me to buy the big 4 doll sets rather than just mira and isa. It’s hard to say that either is better, because unlike the other dolls luisa somehow looks like she’s in wildly different artstyles between these two dolls, but still looks like herself. I think both are absolutely beautiful!

The hair: both dolls have my absolute favorite detail of this beautfiul french braid. I prefer the jakks pacific hair overall because Luisa’s hair is NOT straight, it’s curly and you can see the texture throughout her hair even though it’s pulled back which jakks pacific did a great job of executing! Plus she has her curly bang pieces which look gorgeous. Disney store gave her straight hair throughout but also didn’t even curl the bang pieces so she has these awkward straight pieces hanging by the side of her face. I do like that disney store gave her the ribbon and the disney store’s hair color is slightly closer to movie Luisa’s hair. 

Interestingly enough, only jakks pacific gave her earrings!

as always, disney store added some detail by coloring the shoes

So that’s my comparisons! It’s worth noting that the disney store 4 pack doll set cost 99.99 and their individual dolls cost 24.99. Jakks pacific’s 4 doll set costs 49.99 while their individual dolls cost 12.99. The jakks pacific dolls are half the price! So you will get some extra quality if you want to pay more for the disney store dolls, but for cheaper alternatives I think the jakks pacific dolls are beautiful and i like them just as much as the disney store ones if not better in some places.
