I spent literal months going “man I wish they’d release a character with a flapper-inspired design for Penacony since it’s inspired by 1920’s America and whatnot” whilst maining and constantly staring at Aventurine the entire time before it clicked for me that he’s the resident flapper and his outfit is basically a 50/50 fusion of both masculine and feminine 20’s aesthetics actually and that’s like pretty cool

And then I went “but what if we dialed the flapper aesthetic up to 100” just for funsies because I wanted to see what it’d look like. So here you all go

I finally started watching Only Murders and oh my god why did no one tell me that Oliver Putnam would become another one of my Characters of All Time. he’s broke. he’s a spendthrift. he’s flamboyant. he’s straight. he has impeccable taste. he eats expired hummus with a fork. he tries to Music Man his way through life. he thinks he’s honest. all the world is his stage and he’s a terrible director. he refuses to learn from a single mistake he has made. the only thing limber about him is his mental gymnastics. he’s perfect I love him.

This is gonna sound cold, but as a creator, if there is any type of ship you are so uncomfortable with that you would demand your fans not ship specific characters of yours due to that, then straight up do not release your creations to the public.

Again, I know this is gonna seem cold, but you do not have control over how other people are going to interpret or engage with your creations, and if there exists an interpretation or form of engagement you loathe so much you would demand people never do that with your characters, then keep your creations to yourself.

There are 8 billion people on the planet, which means the potential for approximately 8 billion different interpretations and forms of engagement. It is impossible for you to like, or even just be comfortable with, every single one of those, and it is crucial that you make your peace with the fact people are going to be interacting with your stories in ways you don't approve of if you're going to be publishing. Because again, this is going to happen, you can't control it, and you will drive yourself insane trying.
