A Snack For All Adventurers
Trail mix for dogs is a great way to provide them with a tasty and healthy snack while out on a hike or walk. However, it's important to choose the right ingredients to ensure your furry friend stays safe and healthy. Some good options include unsalted and unbuttered nuts, dried fruits without added sugars, and small pieces of lean meat.Avoid using chocolate, raisins, or any ingredients that are toxic to dogs.Always consult with your veterinarian before introducing new foods to your dog's diet. Cashews are a very soft nut, whereas almonds are very hard and tend to cause gastrointestinal blockage in dogs, so it's best to opt for sliced almonds if you are planning on sharing yourtrail mix with your canine counterpart. Peanuts are another great option for a dog-safe nut in trail mix, but I am not a fan, so I opt for other ingredients since I eat much more of our trail mix than my god, Waffles, does.
Cashews and almonds are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. Cashews are a great source of healthy fats, protein, and fiber, while almonds are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Incorporating these nuts into your diet as a human can help improve heart health, boost brain function, and aid in weight management.
Dried fruit like mango, coconut, blueberries, and strawberries are not just tasty snacks, they also come with a host of benefits. Packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, these chewy treats are a convenient way to get your daily dose of nutrients. Plus, they have a longer shelf life than fresh fruit and make for a great addition to our dog-safe trail mix!
Popcorn is not only a tasty snack, but it also has some amazing benefits. It is a whole grain that is high in fiber, which helps keep you feeling full and aids in digestion. Popcorn also contains antioxidants that help protect against cell damage.Additionally, it is low in calories and fat, making it a great option for those trying to maintain a healthy diet. So go ahead and enjoy some popcorn guilt-free!
Carob is a delicious and dog-safe chocolate alternative that is gaining popularity among pet lovers. This sweet treat is made from the carob tree, which produces a pod that is ground into a powder and used in baking and cooking. Unlike chocolate, carob contains no theobromine, a toxic compound for dogs, making it a safe and healthy option for furry friends. Not only is carob safe for dogs, but it also has a pleasant, slightly sweet taste that is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

A Dog-Friendly Twist on an American Classic
A BLT sandwich is a delicious combination of crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, and juicy tomatoes, all layered between two slices of toasted bread. The saltiness of the bacon, combined with the crunch of the lettuce and the sweetness of the tomato, create a mouth-watering flavor explosion in every bite. It's no wonder why the BLT is a classic sandwich that never goes out of style.
However, BLTs are not safe for dogs because they contain ingredients that can be harmful to their health. Bacon, for example, is high in fat, which can lead to pancreatitis in dogs. Tomatoes and lettuce can also cause digestive issues when not carefully selected and prepared, and the bread can be too high in carbs for some dogs. Mayonnaise often contains toxic ingredients to dogs like mustard and garlic, but we do have a recipe for a Dog-Safe mayonnaise using sunflower oil and egg.
As you can see, moderation and quality control of most ingredients in a BLT are crucial if including any of them in our pets' diets. This is why I opted to create versions that limited the ingredients and combined them with more wholesome options. Our Beef, Leaf and Tomato sandwich also makes a wholesome salad if we choose to opt out of the high-calorie bread. Our more traditional version of a BLT is easy to distribute as a treat but is very high in fat and should be fed in extreme moderation. I personally love this classic sandwich, and I think I love both of the dog- safe alternatives even more.

A Healthy Meal For All
Chicken couscous is a delicious and nutritious meal that is loved by many. What makes it so great is its combination of flavors and textures. The tender chicken provides a satisfying protein, while the couscous adds a chewy and slightly nutty texture. Plus, this dish is easy to prepare and can be customized with a variety of vegetables and herbs, making it a versatile meal that can be enjoyed any time of year by anyone, including our dogs. When preparing the Waffles' food, I will oftentimes prepare an ingredient separately in order to create a wider variety of treats to feed her throughout the day without having to give her more food than she needs. I got the idea for this dish when I was preparing a chiken and couscous recipe created for her by her licensed veterinary nutritionist. I prepared the apples separately because they would be easy to use as a sweet training treat later that day, and while I was making her couscous, it smelled so good. I thought to myself, "I should make this for myself but without the salmon oil and supplement pack." I'm not a fan of salmon oil. So, I did. I browned the extra ground chicken for myself and added in couscous, broccoli and kale. I seasoned it to taste, and the pairings of textures and flavors was better than I had imagined.

Broccoli and Kale Couscous
Couscous is a North African dish made from small steamed balls of semolina flour. It is a staple food in many countries in the region, such as Morocco,Algeria, and Tunisia. Couscous is known for its versatility, ease of preparation, and its ability to absorb the flavors of the ingredients it is cooked with. This makes it perfect to pair with kale, as leafy greens tend to lose their moisture as they wilt and get soggy. When added to couscous, steamed kale maintains its flavor and texture. Veggie couscous is also a great source of carbohydrates and fiber, making it a healthy addition to any meal.

An Afternoon Delight for Dogs and Their Owners
Tea sandwiches are a popular food item often served during afternoon tea. These small, delicate sandwiches are typically made with thinly sliced bread, crusts removed, and filled with a variety of savory ingredients such as cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon and dill, or egg salad. They are perfect for a light and elegant snack, and can be enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee. They are also fantastic dipping sandwiches, given their bite-sized convenience. I love making these doggy friendly versions to dip in hummus with Waffles as a special treat!

Beef on Bread
Beef sandwiches are a classic and delicious meal that can be enjoyed in many different ways. The key ingredient, of course, is the beef, which can be cooked and seasoned to your liking. Some popular types of beef sandwiches include roast beef, Philly cheesesteak, and French dip. The fact that there are already so many variations of beef on bread that we already enjoy make it that much easier to put together a beef sandwich in our own kitchen using whatever deli meat or leftovers we have on hand. t's important to remember to consult with your licensed veterinary nutritionist before making any changes to your dog's diet, though.

Beef and Broccoli Bite-Sized Meatloafs
Ground beef and broccoli make a delicious and nutritious pairing. The lean protein in the ground beef is complemented by the fiber-rich broccoli, making this dish a great option for a balanced meal. You can stir-fry the two together with some garlic and ginger for added flavor, or bake them together with some cheese for a comforting casserole. Either way, this pairing is sure to satisfy your taste buds and your hunger.
Waffles loves these little Broccoli Beef Bites, and I like to snack on them during training sessions and walks, too! Making a meatloaf-style dish into a miniature size creates the perfect portions to snack on and reward good behavior throughout the day.

Sweet, Aromatic and Fragrant Apple Pie
Apple pie is considered an American favorite dessert due to its deep roots inAmerican culture and history. The dish has been enjoyed in the United States since the colonial era, and it quickly became a symbol of American cuisine. The abundance of apples in the country, especially in the Northeast, made it an easy and affordable dessert to make. Moreover, the apple pie has been referenced in popular culture, literature, and music, further cementing its status as anAmerican icon. The dish is often served during nearly every holiday dinner, further solidifying its place inAmerican culinary tradition.
My recipe kind of spins tradition on it's head. I prefer honey over processed sweeteners. Plus, honey and apples are a match made in heaven, with aromatic flavors mixing and mingling and pouring across your taste puds with every warm bite. I also don't sweeten my crust. I might add a little rosemary to add another layer of aroma to the dish while keeping a bit of a separation between the sweetness of the filling and the fragrance of the crust, but I never want my crust to overpower my filling, and I feel like that's exactly what adding a sweetener does.
