so today i had a very good cup of coffee ☕️ and am hopefully getting some books from the library later which im v excited about (also a new phil vid so yay!!)

things are going pretty well overall :) and i’ve been seeing lots of people on my dash being “in happy” (yes i’m stealing your phrase) which makes me really happy too 💜

This is one of my favorite things about him, he is unashamed. When he was barely out of his teen years, he was never afraid to talk about his family and being close with his mum. He is true to his style even when it is akward and uncool, and he makes it all look fucking hot somehow. Grey sweatshorts and an alladin t-shirt should not be a good look on a 32 year old man but here we are. And then there’s music. Even with Dan and his music snobbery, undoubtedly rolling his eyes at Phil in fondest way, he just likes what he likes. Showtunes? Yes! ABBA? Totally! Cheesy pop music? Of course. Michael Buble? Abso-fucking-lutely. And my favorite example was at the Vidcon q&a, when he made that moderator’s day by fanning out on trashy reality tv. I’ve seen Selling Sunset, it’s fucking awful. And he said it was awful and that he loves it. No shame, he embraces the things that bring him joy, no guilty pleasures. It’s cuz he likes himself. Sigh. We get it Phil, we like you too.

Question: as a lover of Titanic, what are your feelings on the fact that there was enough room on that board for both of them to have survived?

mmmmm katie i have Thoughts --

first, from a purely scientific standpoint, the mythbusters did a pretty good job of busting here, but i’m dubious that after being awake for at that point over thirty hours, witnessing untold destruction and death, and freezing their gobs off, that either jack or rose would have the wherewithal to think of tying the lifevest under the board. i also have heard theories about jack and rose taking turns-- one in the water, one out-- every so often so they were both getting the brunt of hypothermia but spreading it thin. i don’t know enough about science to prove this, i wish the mythbusters had done that work for me

but second, from an annoying literary point of view, i hate to say it bc the dude is so smarmy, but james cameron is right. jack has to die. he is essentially the manic pixie dream girl of this narrative, and he exists only for rose’s purposes alone, and rose needed to be given the strength to exist on her own. the climax of rose’s arc, i would argue, is not when she jumps back onto the sinking ship from the safety of the lifeboat, it’s not when the whole thing finally goes down, it’s not even when she has to pull her hand from jack’s and let him sink. it’s when she is sitting, cold and hungry and grief-stricken, and so very Very alone, on the deck of the carpathia, and cal comes looking for her, and she does not let him see. even then, her life of comfort is offered to her. this minor indiscretion would be forgotten in the greater tragedy, her mother would have her back and cal would marry her and she would have the same empty life that she was promised four days ago, empty but stable. empty but safe. and the strength of rose’s story is that she chooses not to turn back. she chooses to make her own very difficult way. that choice would not be half so difficult with a shivering jack sitting there beside her. it would hardly have been a choice at all. but it is a choice she Does make, and a choice i love her so very much for 

and so, poor jack....... the board is metaphorically, if not physically, too small for them both
