I love Deidara.

He’s such a multilayered character, however it’s overshadowed by the way his character is presented and the fact there are other and more important characters to focus on.

His devotion to his art makes him a strangely sad or bittersweet character. His concept is unique and contrary to the most common and popular concept of art; something long lasting.

Deidara’s art is centred around the present, a single moment that can only be experienced once. The present is fleeting, every second that passes is something you can’t get back. A single moment of impact that ensures no future and the destruction of the past; an explosion. Deidara’s art is not only an explosion itself, but both the destruction it causes to what’s in its path, and the destruction of the clay sculptures he uses as its foundation. His art isn’t focused on the past or future. It ensures a single moment in the present (explosion) of destruction (erasing the past).

Considering how the Narutoverse is set around wars and generally full of violence, it would make sense for the art pieces of that verse to be based around telling stories of the wars or advertising for a better future (like Jiraya’s original works), Both of which are based on the past and the future.

It’s easy to see how Deidara’s art would be viewed as ‘unartistic’ or ‘unappealing’. Contrary to popular opinion, Deidara is a smart character who understands other people and how they work. So considering that, why does he seem to assume people look down on him and his art even when they don’t say anything negative (ect; Sasuke, Itachi)? Maybe it’s because of the lack of recognition he’s received. He’s hates people who don’t recognise his work, because that’s what everyone does.

The path of an artist is a path of misery. Most people see artists as people who create, however Deidara is someone who destroys. So what does that make him, in the views of others? Caring about the opinions of those who differ than you is nothing but demeaning. So it’s better to simply view yourself as superior. You’re right and they’re wrong. Deidara’s art is true art, and nobody else’s is. To me, the scene where he aggressively refused his own admiration in Itachi’s abilities, is a clear indication of insecurity and doubt. If he acknowledges someone who doesn’t even share his views on destruction, then he’d be denying the certainty in his own art and be saying ‘my belief and concept can be beaten’.

This is why I believe him to be bittersweet character, whether he himself knows it or not. He’s complicated, maybe because he’s so simple at the same time. Yeah, he’s this short angry blonde dude who likes art- but it’s because of the fact he’s present as that and nothing more, which makes him feel complicated once you actually look at him.

Naturally, this is my perception. I haven’t even read his offical wiki pages or whatnot, so maybe I just completely bullshitted this because I’m desperate to ramble about this stupid guy. Hell, I’ll probably change my opinion on him by next week 😭 anyway I hope someone found my yapping interesting. Please don’t come yelling at me if you disagree.

just out here thinking about the particular choices in the doctor’s clothes + mannerisms + overall exterior between both companions.

amelia’s raggedy doctor: wears slacks that are slightly too short; shoes that look old and worn around the edges, a scruffy tweed jacket; hair only partially styled, often messy and in his face. he was amy’s raggedy doctor, and this was the image he wanted to uphold, because there was something playful about that era, despite the underlying darkness. on the surface, he expressed himself as a mixture between old and new: the tweed jacket with the elbow patches is a very stereotypical old professor kind of fashion, as well as the suspenders. his clothes were aged both in era and condition, but his attitude and charisma kept him youthful and playful. his TARDIS also followed this by upholding that warm, inviting glow. there were wonky staircases and bizarre controls when the ponds were onboard. there was never any consistency, his TARDIS was not streamlined, nor were his clothes. he became a true member of their family, and his house felt like a home for them all. he was comfortable in his oddness to be that raggedy doctor in every way. nothing was ever quite trimmed or cleaned at the edges.

clara’s clever boy: he wore a proper suit and shoes, complete with fancy fob watch and chain. his hair was always styled back, and there was an overall air of sophistication about him. his appearance literally matured. he was still playful and could be childlike, but it was presented differently in comparison to his time with the ponds. he wore two different shades of purple for the most part, a lighter purple for his waistcoat, and darker for his coat. light purple often symbolises lightness and easy energies, whereas darker shades can represent sadness and frustration; the contrast of colours showcased the conflict running through him since losing the ponds. his TARDIS became darker, more streamlined and classy, a more grown up version. there was always an air of grief about him, masked more often than not, but revealed in symbolic gestures like often wearing amy’s reading glasses, which again, altered his appearance. he'd never once worn glasses prior to losing her. his cleverness was more consistent and open, and his sense of responsibility came around full circle. clara’s perception turned him into that clever boy both in looks and attitude, which was the best way his story could have ended.

I am unreasonably upset about the fact that I've been forced to accept that Gabriel was a Gerald.

For context, in An Inspector Calls, Gerald Croft is engaged to Sheila Birling when he meets a homeless, struggling Eva Smith in a bar, and essentially in return for a home and money he shows her affection (ahem), then gets rid of her once he no longer has a use for her. Now, obviously this isn't a direct translation, but the essentials are - a Gerald is a character who uses another character, in return for something they need, usually masking the fact that they're using them with affection and love.

And against my will I've had to accept that this is exactly what Gabriel does to Nathalie.

Did I want to think he had potential to be better? Did I think he genuinely cared for Nathalie?? Hell, did I just really really want somebody to care about Nathalie???

Probably all of the above but the point is: he's Gerald. And I cannot - I literally can't unsee it now. Their whole dynamic in S3 is like “oh boohoo I'm sorry I wish you didn't have to use the peacock Miraculous and kill yourself over it but uh I need to use your powers” “yeah no that's fine I'm all good”. Which, given the "Gerald" theorem, I'm assuming leads to the fact that what Nathalie needed, above all, was someone to care about her - and Gabriel came along, as Sheila Birling puts it, "like a fairytale prince", and was so caring and gentle and... Yeah. She fell for him. And. Yeah he genuinely did seem to care like twice. But so did Gerald. Gerald actually admits that he did care for Eva, just not the way that she cared for him, and, uh, not enough to not just dispose of her. So he discards her anyway when she stops being useful.

Leading me neatly to my point.

He starts using the peacock Miraculous the second it's fixed, the slimy bastard, HOWEVER. It runs way deeper than that. Assuming I'm right (which I almost DEFINITELY am), then Gabriel only needed Nathalie while she was useful. She didn't stop being useful in season three - she's still scheming for him, helping him with plan after plan. It's only partway through season 5 that she officially servers ties with him, and starts to actively hinder him.

Nathalie stops being useful when she fails as Safari. And I reckon that's when Gabriel and Tomoe decided she had to go.

(It's painfully, I-was-ugly-crying-over-it obvious in Conformation that Gabriel is fully prepared to let Nathalie die - in the original storyboard, her alliance was encouraging her to sleep, and he's very obviously prepared for this moment - I've made a separate post about it that I'll link if I can find it. However, onto the next bit)

With all of this, there's one thing that sticks out to me - Nathalie didn't see any of it until it was already too late. There could be many reasons for this. But you know who would have seen through it? Whose parents were all loving and perfect until she married the wrong man? Emilie. Emilie, who left behind those videos, which on the surface look innocent, but when you look deeper look like a (love confession???????) AHEM a warning. I reckon Emilie noticed what was going on and realised that Nathalie wouldn't see through Gabriel, so she left those videos addressed to Nathalie (not Gabriel, which surely they should have been - they were about him, after all - unless they were there...) as a warning. I don't think the videos were supposed to be about helping Gabriel, I think Emilie was warning Nathalie to get the fuck out of that house, and to take Adrien with her. Because Emilie knew it'd end like this.

so she is definitely a star of some kind. i mean she is an angel but in that story in particular The Stars are kind of angels. like they’re otherworldly beings and they jus kinda hang out. cosmically. it’s a different dimension separated from the human one but like, obviously stars still exist for humans, they just don’t do anything crazy because the rules of the world dictate that their realities shouldn’t interact. angels can observe the other world from far up above yet they still exist on a different level. But tbh zavijava had never enjoyed the otherworldly ethereal whatever lifestyle—she just didn’t feel like she fit in there. she is a #1 humans fan though so she knows that’s where she’d fit in. so she does just that. she fits in perfectly :) and normally :) yay :)

Heheheheheho I have gotten some of the Dragon Age books (🏴‍☠️) and this is gonna really let me dig into some stuff, especially my favorite guy Cole, cause now I can read his OG appearance, I want to see how much stuff Cole says, especially during his quest actually makes sense, and how much is in-universe "both sides are right"ing about not listening to what Cole wants to do.

I am mainly talking about Spirit!Cole thanking Inky for not making him change... Despite the fact that thoughout Cole's quest Solas ignores what Cole wants (Like being binded) & wants to do (Kill the guy who beat beyond beating a 12 (at most) year old (most likely, it isn't outright stated (to my memory) the Templar who fucked up the paperwork was also one of the ones who physically abused him, but I feel it's a pretty safe assumption) & got that child killed due to neglect & faced no consequences) but ultimately the choice that causes Cole to thank the player for not changing him is the one where you listen to Solas over Cole (Or well Varric, who also doesn't let Cole do what he wants but is closer to what Cole would have done if he had went alone for the confrontation) & in this route I would say Cole's character changes a lot more, especially as he forgets the original Cole, which... Rubs me wrong, but I'll save my more detailed thoughts for 1. After I fully read Asunder & 2. Either a full Cole analysis or a detailed post about my thoughts on his quest & routes (& maybe how I'd rewrite them, as a Autistic person & a ally to the aroace community)

Anyways my point is that I want to see how true it is characters rejected or wanted to change Cole, I want to see what leads him to feel that having two men argue & tell him who he is supposed to be & do only to have a third person decide out of those two's options for what he should do is remotely a situation where he's been accepted.
