Dragon Sisters’/Siblings Theories

Does anybody else obsess about the Dragon siblings?? Ling is here, amazing btw, I love her Eng VA although her Chinese VA is good too BUT I digress.

I’m obsessed with the thought of them all. And I say siblings because in translations I’ve seen they refer to their other ‘siblings’ and not necessarily just sisters. I hope. Now this is a gacha game. Over saturation of girl characters is just to be expected so if the 9 Dragon siblings ALL end up being girls I won’t be disappointed but the idea of one or two brothers, at least, is appealing to me.

So we know there will be 9 in total. We have 3, whose color schemes so far fit with primary (sort of) colors in the sense of like graphic design, the ol’ RGB. Red = Nian, Green = Dusk, Blue = Ling. Ofc, we know this.

Now, I’m thinking the next sibling will have a yellow color scheme. Yellow is generally not a color that features heavily in the character designs. It’s not obscure by any means but its generally just accents (ex. Beehunter or Tequila) or muted (ex. Nightmare or Beeswax). I think, as someone who loves yellow that’s part of the reason I got really excited for Kazemaru. She has such a rich yellow and while it doesn’t take up the entirety of her design it’s the main character of it for sure. Better emphasized by the rest of her design made of neutral colors and that purple accent to really make it pop. BUT I DIGRESS…I think visually this just makes sense, they released RGB so it makes sense (to my lizard brain) to finish off with the final (actual—I’m not gonna get into the whole cyan, magenta, yellow thing rn—primary color) one. Before getting into secondary and tertiary color schemes. Btw I mention this because imo at least the Dragon siblings are the characters most heavily exemplifying one color in their design. This ofc does not include characters who dress in nearly all black as that is fairly common, overall in media, and to my eyes. I’m not even gonna get into how the possibility exists, in my theoretical outlook, on whether or not I think any Dragon siblings would wear all black in their design. I hope not, but the possibility exists that it could be done very well.

Moving on! This theory of the next sibling being represented by yellow could go out the window entirely if they decide to go with someone younger rather than another older sibling. At least to me they have gone very much by the color wheel in terms of the Dragon siblings, what color they represent, and what place in the sibling hierarchy they hold due to said color.

FOR INSTANCE! We know Ling is older than Nian AND Dusk (she’s referred to as their older sister) and we know Nian is older than Dusk (i dont remember if she says little sister when referring to Dusk but its evident in the way they interact, imo at least). Okay so so far that’s:

Blue/Primary = Oldest

Red/Primary = Old(er)

Green/Secondary = Younger

It would make sense to me that the 3rd oldest, or at least the third of the oldest siblings of them all, would be represented by yellow, as follows:

Blue/Primary = Oldest (potentially just Older)

Red/Primary = Older

Yellow/Primary = Older

Green/Secondary = Younger (than the primaries but potentially one of the older)

Purple (or Orange)/Secondary = Middle

Orange (or Purple)/Secondary = Younger

?/Tertiary = Younger

?/Tertiary = Youngest

However, following this logic if they choose to do another younger sibling rather than potentially the final of the oldest siblings, it could be any color. AND Ling is not, iirc, referred to as their oldEST sibling just oldER. So, let’s say they (Hypergryph) DOES choose to do a Black and/or White color scheme for a sibling(s). Those potential siblings, if following this sort of flimsy thread of color theory logic, would be the two oldEST.

But putting sibling hierarchy aside for a moment this, to me, would also be the perfect time to introduce the first of (prob two) brothers, this upcoming New Years banner. Because we have passed the first DS and the massive hype or joy that came w that. We passed the 2nd which sort of keeps the same energy but the excitements lost its edge and now we have Ling, probably the best utility (DP cost, versatility etc.) of the 3 so far so while we’re used to it now we still have that extra enjoyment coming from how awesome she is for her class archetype. Ntm her personality 10/10. To me it would just make sense to change it up with a male sibling. HOWEVER, if they only end up having one brother, it would make sense to release them in fifth place rather than fourth, have them be the breaker of potential monotony by putting him right in the middle. And ofc if it’s all sisters this gets chucked but it’s nice to think about. Or if they truly have a random or at least story driven (of which I as a consumer wouldnt be privy to until I read it in real time) method for how/when they release each sibling it could go seemingly any way.

Now, classes. We have a Defender, Caster, Supporter. Nian belongs to I believe one of the core class archetypes to have a Normal/Protector Defender, while AOE/Splash Caster and Summoner/Supporter are situational and optional, respectively. In terms of game strategy and like social media. Idk if the actual game itself lists these this way, just what I’ve seen online. So i have no idea if any of this comes into play (speaking of the references to Situational and Optional ik the archetypes themselves do) so i’m not going to go into class archetypes just the classes themselves. There are 8 classes in Arknights. If the Dragon siblings are each going to have a different class, w only two sharing the same one (in my mind it makes sense for Hypergryph to want all siblings able to be deployed as a well balanced team) then I think if we go in terms of popularity and just versatility it would make sense that two of them would be Guards. It’s by far the most popular class in terms of the number of operators in it and how necessary a role Guards play.

So hypothetically, that’s:

Defender - One (i think big potential for the 2 yet not the highest probability. Idk why)

Guard - Possibly Twice

Caster - One

Medic - One (2nd likely to have the 2)

Vanguard - One

Sniper - One (3rd likely to have the 2)

Supporter - One

Specialist - One

Now from here if we have one class that gets neglected and end up having 2 pairs of siblings sharing classes, I think the one to get neglected would be Specialist. Only because of how few operators there are and how niche they are and all that aside I think the possibility is unlikely. I imagine scrolling through classes looking for operators will please those collectors who get all 9, just seein a sibling in each category, so HG prob wont skimp in getting one in each. V flimsy but bear w me.

I would go more into personality potentials but this is supa long now. Just by the law of anime I believe we’ll be getting a mentally unstable sibling (prob w a Purple color scheme) and not like Dusk w her solitude and essential agoraphobia and her putting people into paintings I mean on the level of Specter or Lappland. Probably high energy, a psycho who Dusk really cannot deal with, who Nian laughs w or at, and who Ling keeps an eye on w more of a somber approach. I definitely think or hope we’ll be getting an adolescent sibling, girl or boy. I gotta say a cute younger brother type would be refreshing. And I love the dynamic of a younger brother w lots of caring older sisters or caring older sisters and being kind and sweet to his younger siblings. Like paying their care forward. If a younger adolescent sister type I like the idea of her coming to Rhodes and finding friends in Shamare and Suzu, maybe Popukar and Gummy too. Very wholesome.

That’s all for now. I have more thoughts but I think I’ll give them time to bake before I word vomit again.

Edit: I made this post after not sleeping for nearly 24 hours so I kinda lost some things in my brain fog BUT I realize technically Nian is mostly white in her design, her dragon is white as well, but to me her personality feels very red and the white of her design only serves to make the red stand way out. AND it was brought to my attention that she has a voice line about her brother. So there IS at least one. AND HE COOKS. This kind of lends credence to my yellow sibling theory as in advertising at least yellow is a popular color to use (generally in tandem w red) because it brings to mind…something. Idk I can’t remember but an example would be like McDonalds. I went to read it and it’s like the 3rd of all her voice lines and it never registered for me. And I’ve had her set as my assistant before lol.

ALSO she has 11 siblings not twelve. I always get the number mixed up because they’re all based off of the NINE sons of the dragon. But yes….feeling a lil dumb. I did know that, I think, I kept sighing about how we have 12 New Years before we get them all but as I was writing this I was like nooooo it’s 9. I am silly and I choose to place the majority of the blame on sleep deprivation. Disregard any reference to 9. HOWEVER this does mean my color theory is expanded rather than diminished to fit 9 rather than 12.

Leftists/liberals/Democrats are making such a huge fucking mistake defending the Netflix movie ‘Cuties’. Do you know what happens to normal people when they see liberals and leftists using the woman of color defense to defend sexualizing children and soft core cp? They call it for what it is - hypocrisy from the side of the Democrats. and when they do not see the adamant defending for the children you know who they’re going to go to? the people who are actively acting outraged by this movie (no matter what their true thoughts on it are) Who in this case unfortunately seem to be fucking conservatives! If you would not let a man make this movie because of what it puts the 11-year-old actresses through AND the message it sends then you are being a hypocrite for allowing it otherwise. I have watched more people turn to conservative media because they were actually covering this and not trying to defend it than I have ever seen before Trump!

You all realize this plays into the conspiracy theory right? The one about Democrats being pedophiles involved in trafficking children? How are we supposed to defend against that when Democrats won’t even stand against this movie? The moral of the movie was understandable, but the execution was horrendous! and instead of acknowledging that and cutting ties with the movie and owning up to what it does to towards the normalization of sexualizing children in future media as long as it’s “making a good point” I’ve watched people bend ass over backwards to defend it! this is not the hill to die on!

I always want to give people the benefit of the doubt, but now that the movie has come out, the jury has come in. The director was a well-intentioned woman who wanted to do a movie about her experiences. However, in trying to obtain her goal she has sexualized children, she normalized it by saying that because she was trying to show that it’s a bad thing it was okay, and sexualized black girls in particular! That was not her intention but that’s what happened. And instead of exercising a minuscule amount of critical thinking, liberals ignored all of peoples legitimate concerns about this movie and either 1) defended bc it was made by a woc or 2) ignored it! and by doing so, they have pushed people to the right because the right can say unequivocally no matter how hypocritically that they do not support child porn! So for gods sake, grow a fuckingbackbone and stop defending this movie

Anyway, I just wanted to give this update to anybody who doesn’t watch conservative media, because unfortunately I have to, due to my family and I’ve seen this whole shit show go down on both sides and the left really dropped the fucking ball on this. (btw anybody who supports this movie can block me. I have spent hours trying to read all the arguments and now with the movie being just as bad as we thought it was going to be, I can definitively say I do not care about your opinion)

As the parent of an adult child with autism I always tell young parents to never underestimate their child Our children CAN They are true angels sent to us by God

I worked as a parapro for three years and have seen people on every part of the spectrum- the way he spoke and carried himself should NOT influence anyone’s decision on their theory of his guilt or innocence. His demeanor is very typical of someone with high-functioning autism.

One thing I know about people with Aspergers is, they dont lie, they are often shy at 1st, but once they know you, they arent the type you ask "does my butt look big in this" coz they'll tell you outright that if does with such innocence & charm.

The innocence of people with autism is truly incomparable, it's their raw emotion that's sets them apart from the rest of the world.

That's a good argument? Because it's what SHE *wants* to do? She is a child who does not yet fully grasp the perils of public life or climatology. She's also a child diagnosed on the autism spectrum. She deserves privacy and protection of her innocence. It will end poorly.

I've started to suspect she was selected for this job because of her autism. She can play innocence whenever someone publicly calls her out for the childish nonsense that comes out of her.

Greta is a 16-yr-old kid with autism who is being used by her parents & the crazy adults around her as a political pawn. She's not a savior. She's a kid who is having her innocence and anonymity stripped from her by a**holes pushing their stupid climate change crap.

I think she is being used. The fact that she has an Autism Spectrum Condition should be respected. She is very articulate and very focused partly because she is Greta and partly because she is autistic, but she also has the innocence of a teenager and someone with an ASD.

I disagree that all 3 entities are conscious in Dark. The way I see it is like a car. Damien is the driver, Celine is the engine (powers everything), and we the viewers, are the car. However, all of our main personality traits have melded together, hence Dark’s unstable behavior. We know Damien’s the dominant trait because when we reach for the cane, our hands change to his.

Continuing, Y/N AKA the car is the most important object. Without the car, there wouldn’t be a driver or power. We’re the starting point in this video. Also, Y/N is a DA, why is that crucial? An attorney sifts through every detail to help his case, going to great lengths and even stretching the truth to prove it. That sounds pretty familiar… to the fan-theorists. We are intricate to Dark. He didn’t exist before us. However we are guided and led by him, and our theories couldn’t function without him. Again, like a car.

About the house/dark entity, whatever… I don’t think plays an active role in Darkiplier, rather it is the thing that corrupted all of us. As much as Damien despises Mark now, it’s not in his nature to act like Dark. Since there’s less of Celine shown in WKM, I can’t vouch for her, but she even CALMS Damien’s rage towards Mark. In chapter 3, she feels that the house itself has dark forces surrounding it. (Also the last thing she says to you before you trip begins is keep your enemies close. Is anybody talking about this??) Also, all the groundskeeper said. Something happened to all of us either in the void or once we were brought back.

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS SCENE IN CHAPTER 4???? It starts at the 1:17 mark. This is obviously something big. Not only do we get future lines, a creepy monochrome overlay, but also different characters’ POV!!! And IT leads us to the detective’s room?!!? This is too good to be true. This occurrence wasn’t even triggered by anything like Celine’s witchcraft. You know what’s also monochrome? Dark. So I think we were led by the house to discover the detective’s room because after that, that’s where all the S hits the fan.

Back to the car. This would also explain how the colors work in the other videos. In almost every instance, we see Dark with blue, Damien’s color. Blue is associated with trust, loyalty, intelligence, and truth. I’m just rehashing what others have said, but we all think about Damien in this way. Who wouldn’t trust such a pure, innocent boi? What these color theorists leave out is blue creates a calming effect. Whenever we see Damien, we feel safe. And when people feel safe, calm, and comfortable, that is when a manipulator, like Dark, strikes.

Red represents Celine. Across the board, the appearance of red is almost as consistent as blue, BUT red’s nature is more volatile. What does red mean? A quick Google search says it means power, danger, desire, malice, the most intimidating, and is considered the most manipulative. In ADWM and AvD (Anti v Dark), there are erratic moments where red either overtakes the screen, or barely present. Specifically, in the AvD video, he has huge red backdrop, meaning that in this void, he is way more powerful or not able to control his power as well. When Anti and Dark bicker, Dark’s red is “glitched” ;) out, meaning his power is being contested. This instance doesn’t happen in any other video with Dark (I checked). As more Egos file in, he tries to exert the red again to mostly be intimidating, but it fails. When Dark Chica arrives, he’s completely monochrome, meaning he has almost no power in this situation.

Both of these colors have been addressed by the other AMAZING Theorists, BUT they forget a third, less prominent color. Green.

Green is rarely seen in any video with Dark, and Damien and Celine weren’t green. That leaves us with one option: the viewer’s color was green. Not only are we the least functioning part of Darkiplier, our color too is the last. Green represents life. We the viewers, essentially gave life back to the trio by giving our body, and the birth of Dark with our theorizing. We might be the least prominent one, but we are still there.

The final nail in the coffin against the popular “all 3 are conscious and fight for control” is: it doesn’t match Dark. His personality is consistent in every video, and we never see any evidence to internal arguing that someone with 3 would. Some would argue that his twitchiness (when we see 2 Darks: one screaming and one not) in the void in ADWM portrays it. I think it’s because we, the viewer, are still alive and therefore the void gets distorted. Also, it doesn’t even look like the two versions are arguing; Dark’s just freaking frustrated! If you’re not convinced with the twitches, in WKM where everyone is dead in the void, there is not a single twitch. Although, it could be argued that since they weren’t joined yet, there would be no need to glitch. For those who’d say that, I’d reply “Good eye!” But in AvD, we again don’t witness any twitches at all, and there’s no human person alive in there.

The Big picture is WKM is a “perspective” of Dark and Warf’s origin story, told from Dark’s point of view. Based on what we know about Dark’s personality by Mark, it’s easy to connect the dots that he’d make Mark look like a jerk to turn us to his side. Y’all spent an entire post describing how WKM is filmed to make us like Damien (brilliant btw!). The best lies are always half-truths. While I’m not defending Mark, he is more of a jerk (in ADWM and WKM) in this universe, I doubt that he’d want such specific revenge against the Colonel as many theorize. Also, many pointed out that Mark wasn’t stabbed 30 times, drowned, etc. it’s just impossible because there’s no blood on him. This was all embellished… by someone who would profit from it.

Now, you may be wondering how the HECK WKM even works with all the rest of the lore. Especially ADWM. Mark’s still alive in ADWM, but he died in WKM which is an origin story?? Rest assured, there’s an explanation, but here’s the twist: Mark didn’t die in the first place. Damien is the one on the floor, dressed as Mark.

To those that immediately scoff at the idea, hear me out. Mark in this universe is an actor, which is shown in ADWM. If Mark and Damien were besties since childhood, he would know Damien’s little quirks. Even enough to throw off the Colonel! When Damien claims that Mark is walking around in his body, he’s doing so in a figurative sense. This would fix the plot-hole of where did “Mark’s” body go and why “Damien” was never found. Also, this would fix the relationship between ADWM & WKM.

Finishing off, I’d like to leave the only comment Mark has written about Dark on Tumblr:

“For the people picking Darkiplier as their favorite character of mine… I don’t know who Darkiplier is. He is not a “character” I play. I don’t even know when you all started calling him by that name. You made him real. And now he knows who you are. Why did you do this…”

I finished “The Tower of Ashes” and, let me tell you, if you love the psychedelic horror aspects of ASOIAF, this one’s for you.

This story... I can’t tell you if I love “Tower of Ashes” or if I hate it. This story fucked me up, in a weird way, and I’m not sure I like it. I think it’s a Beauty and the Beast story... Or Phantom of the Opera... idk. It’s horror, I know that much.

Spoilers below. Srsly, spoilers.

Someone please read this and tell me if my theory is crazy. Please. It’s like I’ve just theorized that Aegon VI is a fake in ADWD, and I have no one to turn to. Please talk to me.

First, a point of clarification. In my previous post on “Tower of Ashes” I said the narrator was a dealer of dreams, but in truth he only supplies raw materials to the actual dealers. His name is John, evoking the idea of a John Doe figure. He’s such a vague character that I’m not entirely sure who he is ... or what.

I first started questioning what was going on right at the beginning, when the narrator introduces his pet, named Squirrel. Squirrel’s a cat. “With ears like a fox.” Allegedly Squirrel’s a cat, if you believe the narrator. I don’t.

Squirrel’s described as much smaller than a normal cat. (btw, an average dream-spider is “the size of a big man’s fist”.) And at the end:

Sometimes when Squirrel comes behind me up the stairs, scraping the sooty bricks with his eight white legs, the wrongness of it all hits me, and I know I’ve dwelt with dreams too long. Yet the dreams are often better than the waking, the stories so much finer than the lives.

This is one of two things:

John’s too addicted to the dream drug and he can’t ~wake~ to reality properly anymore.

Squirrel’s a spider. Did I mention the dream-spiders are deadly predators that live in pairs?

Anyways, GRRM immediately introduces this dissonance, this idea that things aren’t as they first seem.

John lives alone on the mainland, where no other human lives. There’s this sense that he’s trapped there, in a prison of his own making. “The mainland’s no use to anyone, except the spider-men.�� Spider-men here refers to the drug dealers / dream dealers, but ... what if it means something more? The people in the story repeatedly ask whether there’s sentient life on the mainland.

There’s some language and sentence structure and words that just -- they don’t jive with the narrator as human, as if the fantasy he’s spinning for himself has slipped away momentarily, letting us see through the glamour:

I was down …

… and sinking.

It’s this WTF moment that you just slide by on first read. But coming back to it a second time ... knowing the dream-spiders are up there in the canopy, and they sink down to hunt, scuttling along the ground... It’s creepy, my friends.

John eschews the laser guns, preferring to hunt with a bow and arrow, and a knife, weapons strangely akin to the spider venom and barbs.

I had, all unthinking, built myself another fantasy.

“I’d spun a pretty web, bright and alluring as the trap of any dream-spider”

“I lived from twilight to dawn, as the dream-spiders do.”

I know all this is metaphor. I know. But.

I know this sounds like crazy reddit tinfoil crack. But

I think John is a spider.

Yeah, I said it. I think this guy’s a giant fucking spider.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think the story is better if he’s a spider. I promise it jives with the themes and all that good stuff. Just hear me out.

IF John is a spider ... he’s the Beast.

“I wanted Crys to be happy, simply, and she could not be happy with me”

The love interest, Crystal, doesn’t have much to her character, but I think that’s the point. She’s a crystal, a bright beautiful rainbow of longing for John. She’s his fantasy. (Fantasy helps us “find the colors again”.) The nickname John gives her (“Crys”) made me think of Christine, from Phantom.

He takes Crystal (and us) to this land of enchantment, a fairyland of bluemoss that glows in the darkness, before Gerry (a Gaston figure if ever I saw one) ruins it all. Gerry wants to kill the Beast(s), you see; he wants to spray the continent with napalm and eradicate all the spiders and the bluemoss and everything else wondrous and beautiful.

Maybe Crystal is supposed to be Belle / Beauty, but I don’t think so. I don’t think Crystal even exists as anything more than a story John told himself, to soften the darkness and make his loneliness a little more bearable.

I think the readers are meant to be Beauty. We’re the ones who see the humanity in Spider!John and feel his longing and realize he isn’t different from us at all. In fact, he’s so much like us that we couldn’t even see through his glamour in the beginning. We’re the ones who stay with him, long after Crystal has vanished. (Or he stays with us, lingering in our nightmares.)

Come on, my friends, we’ve built more from a rusty piece of metal washing up on the banks of the Trident. Surely it’s not absurd to think that John is secretly a giant spider, dreaming of his life as a human and of winning back his lady love?

ANYWAYS GRRM’s definitely playing with the idea of fantasy as something “more real than real” here. It leads to questions about the nature of reality, viewed through a highly unreliable narrator. It’s also a story about storytelling, as so many of GRRM’s stories are. (Remember the Frog Prince in ADWD? Remember all those allusions to other fantasy stories in ASOIAF? GRRM loves to talk about stories.)

“I wanted to think myself a hero”

I hear echoes of Tyrion in these lines.

John (surely a spider? one of the most evil creatures in all of fantasy) wanted to play the hero. He wanted to love, and be loved. He wanted those simple human things, like Tyrion’s dreams of a snug cottage by the sea with Tysha.

John can’t play the hero. As Crystal makes clear, he has no choice, he doesn’t get to go out in a blaze of glory. Instead he lingers, grotesquely, long after his story, this fantasy he built for himself, has run out.

have you ever known anybody to die at the right time? No, don’t happen that way. Some guys fall over before their lives have properly gotten started, some right in the middle of the best part. Others kinda linger on after everything is really over.

But even spiders feel loneliness. Even spiders can sit on the roof, under the stars and look out across the water at the city lights and wonder about the stories over there:

Each night I return from the cool forests, my arrows black with the caked blood of the dream-spiders and my bag heavy with their poison sacs, and I set aside my bow and wash my hands and then climb up to the roof to spend the last few hours before dawn. The square black buildings wear a bright romantic glow at night; the lights, all smoky orange and muted blue, speak of mystery and silent song and more than a little loneliness

We have been insuring our Audi with the Co-op, who I've generally found to be reasonable. However, now we have a problem. A couple of months ago we bought a van with the intention of replacing the Audi with the van. But the van needed some work doing on it, so we took out a second insurance on the van with the Co-op, so we could still drive the Audi. At the time, I was disappointed to be told that we could not have a No Claims Bonus on the van, as they said it could only be applied to one policy at a time. But they gave the clear impression that when we cancel the Audi insurance, we could then transfer the NCB to the van. The Audi has now broken down, so we want to cancel its insurance. However, yesterday when I called them, they now said they cannot transfer the NCB to the van as it would be being transferred 'mid-season' to a different car policy. They said they could only have applied it to the van if we had changed the original Audi's policy to cover the van, instead of taking out a different insurance policy for the van. This seems ridiculous. Surely, we are entitled to our NCB?! Why should it matter that it is mid-season or not? I explained that if I cancelled our insurances with them and went to another company, I would be given a NCB on the van so why won't they give it to me. They agreed! I really don't want to change, as I don't trust other companies and the Co-op seem more ethical than others. But this seems so stupid. To get round this silly rule without changing company, I'm thinking of cancelling the van insurance and changing the Audi insurance to the van, ie. do what they said I should have done in the beginning. Let me make a very long story short and get right to the questions. I have moved across the United States by myself at the age of 20 with no insurance covered by my parents, nor will they ever if they could. I had a retinal detachment in my left eye. Paid out of pocket for an eye doctor appointment, he freaked out and told me to go straight to the emergency room for emergency surgery since my entire retina was detached. After my surgery, half unconscious too, a social worker got assigned to me because I was under 21 and legally dependent on the state. So the state paid for my surgery. I had a 2nd one too because the first failed. During my 2nd surgery I had cataracts in my eye so they removed the natural lens. And they never replaced the natural lens since they feared the retina may detach again like the first time. But it stay together and I turned 21. So therefore, legally independent by the state. My check up appointment was after my birthday which the front desk of the eye section declared I must pay $80 for every check up visit, which they wanted me to come in every other week. And if I did not pay, I could not go in. Due to my 6 months of surgeries and recover time I had no money, and was not working. I live with my in-laws, and they were taking care of me, but they are certainly not going to pay my medical bills. So here I am now, age 22 and I have been working for about a year. My job does not offer health insurance until you worked for a year, and even then, there is a certain month you can sign up. I have been walking around for over a year without a natural lens, or ANY lens in my left eye. This is in no way like being blind. My doctor had told me that if I got my license and drove, if ever in an accident, I would get in serious trouble because you are not supposed to drive this way. Not that I do, I cannot see correctly so it is wicked dangerous. Having no lens in one eyes messes with your other eye. Hard to explain unless you have literally had this situation before. Sunlight glares into my bad eye, then into my good eye. Same with darkness or bright lights in general. I am actually very blind at night because of this. This is literally ruining my life. I have no money to pay for insurance, or the surgery which can be easily be 10,000 dollars. Is this legal for a county hospital to do? I have never heard of anyone in my situation. Even the thousands of times I have googled and searched. Never heard of anyone in my shoes. What are my rights here? Is there some way I can fight this? Where is my justice? Reviewing SweetStoryBro’s Review of the Shenmue story

Some first ofs:

I am writing this directly adressing Sweetstorybro because it feels more natural and less impersonal to address him but that doesn’t mean it’s not intended for anybody else. I am one of the big backers (toy capsule set pledge) so I have a lot to say about this game I fought 14 years for to get that Kickstarter.

I am sorry if this may read a lil bit like a scatterbrained person wrote this. I basically take notes as I listen and since I managed to lose my write up for the first half of the podcast I had to rewrite that from memory too.

I really like the effort and research you put into this, while in places I can add something overall this is very sastisfying for a long time fan and definately a pretty goddamn complete rundown of what the story is about and how its executed. That being said generally if there’s agreement there is not a whole lot more to add so if I don’t outright disagree you can assume I agreed.

Let get to it then:

I think you did a really good job at explaining in which way Shenmue surpasses your average gaming experience, while its clearly a game it kinda goes past playing but experiencing. As you pointed out this game can be a very different experience for each player based on how hard they are looking to find connections and generally explore the world (and progress the story at just the right pace as to not miss a single cutscenes XD It’s not too easy to make a 100% run but if you do, things like Nozomi moving isn't as much out of the blue, yes she basically leaves as abrupt as he does but it's foreshadowed during the convos with her). Yu indeed built a very lifelike world with tons of lil details and NPCs that felt real. I really like how you brought up that book explaining what Yu was trying to do with this world. That was a thing I fan haven't heard of before. Indeed it is a very key aspect to differentiate between japanese and chinese, which of course becomes a much bigger deal in part II even, when Ryo is removed from his stomping grounds but in Hongkong. It's actually p interesting how a game about chinese culture was kinda a main idea from the beginning, as he was inspired to be making Shenmue (then Akira RPG/Project Berkley) many years prior, when he travelled China in order to research martial arts for Virtua Fighter.

As this is a perfect segway I’ll be skipping ahead a little bit here and talk about the fighting system.On of the main genres I always played were fighting games so I personally appreciated the super simplified VF fighting system (try VF3TB from the same time and youll know the difference) and being such a player I wouldnt even have thought of wanting to play this with analog stick. Golden rule of fighting games: dpad = accuracy, analog = wishy washy. That being said I am not at all opposed to change it up for Shenmue III and make it feel more like Sleeping Dogs. After all back in the day it was a different controller not quite as handy for 3D games (the lack of a 2nd stick means a lot). As long as the fighting is tight and responsive it works for me either way, iof there is a change that needs to happen it’s the camera. I am not really holding it against the game cuz it’s really old but the camera screw ups during fights could leave you clueless which way youre facing at times.

I wouldnt worry too much about the thing with the chapters. The games don’t equal chapters. It’s more like arcs/themes (as you later said when talking about the PostMortem). From basically the very start Shenmue was supposed to be split into 5 games and as of yet the plan/hope is that the final game will be Shenmue V. Shenmue I was only 1 chapter but Shenmue II was 3.

At the risk of completly blowing any kind of credibility I might have and just come off as a crazed fanboy: The pacing of Shenmue I had purpose. It very much corresponds with the mental state of Ryo. Feeling of grief and feeling lost. Shenmue I basically is about running into a brickwall and trying a different path until at the end he finally finds a way to get his passage to China. Until then his plans were shattered and ruined a couple of times and it weighs on him. And it should weigh on the player too. It’s part of how you manage to get this deep connection to the character because you as a player are forced to live out the day as is (or just go for the blocking out that your dad was killed and spend all day in the You Arcade). this is further emphasiszed that in Shenmue I theres rarely ever good weather and most of the soundtrack is depressing too. The days getting long is absolutely intentional. I can see how this might not be the most fun kind of gaming for a lot of people, but this is why different games exist. Shenmue’s job is not to appeal to players who can’t enjoy a game where shit doesn’t explode every 5 seconds. It is important to tell people who are interested so they know what theyre in for but its not actually a negative for the game itself because it actually perfectly fullfills what was required for this part of the story.

There is no way to talk about this without explaining how this correlates with the 4 themes Yu brought up and why Shenmue II is such a change of tone. It’s not just the fact that Hongkong is a bustling metropolis. It is very much the fact that due to the unseen part on the ferry and much more so because of all the masters and other freaks he meets in Hongkong that he opens up more. Again the change in tone of Shenmue II is also accompanied by visual and audio cues. THe soundtrack of Shenmue II is overall more upbeat, depressing themes do play in the more run down quarters but overall the game sounds cheerier. Likewise its not just that Hongkong of course is a much more colorful place than the suburban area he grew up in. It’s also basically always sunny in SHenmue II. Granted it makes a lot of sense due to the different seasons the game takes place in but of course with a highly artistic work like this, this is not a coincidence.

Let’s move right into the next part here. Yes Ryo behaves like a jerkass towards a lot of his peers. While there is a chance that the Voice Acting has some to do with it (No dissing Corey Marshall, the man is a hero!) it is still fully intended for him to be as cold and brooding as he is. You can tell by the face animation, which is p goddamn good for a game that old. Every Shenmue player made jokes about how Ryo’s happy face looks the same as his angry face. His moments where he is at least not totally miserable are rare and special. He is consumed with grief in Shenmue I. Shenmue II is about moving forward from that. HENCE DEPARTURE. not just locally but mentally. I really need to compare the interactions he had with the 2 most important females in his personal life.

The first one is obviously Nozomi: These conversations are awkward for more reasons than just them sucking at talking about their feelings (which btw isnt just them being teens but really very much them being japanese in this era too). Keep in mind both are aware of the feelings the other one has so they have a very close relationship. You’d think close enough for him to actually tell Nozomi what hes on and about to do in order to find the killer of his father. He doesn’t He’s very sparse with the information he shares which is entirely rooted in the fact that revenge is highly egoistical (heres a theme that gets such importance placed upon in Shenmue II). That doesn’t even mean hes an egoist, cuz he is not. He is just super preoccupied with his grief and aparently nobody really knows how to help him finding a better way to deal with it (given his age that makes sense too, no complaints there). As I mentioned earlier tho it depends on your play how many scenes with Nozomi you’re going to see (the Shenmue Passport cd is a good reference). Also since it wasn’t actually out of the blue that she would be going to Canada soon it is quite understandable she has a hard time telling him about her feelings too. This is not only a well known story beat but IRL youd think whether you wanna tell someone you love them when you know for a fact you’ll be moving overseas anytime soon. Especially when you consider the circumstance that if Ryo wasn’t on his revenge trip he’d assume his role as patriarch of the Hazuki Dojo.

Now lets fast forward to disc 4 of Shenmue II (THIS GEM!) and inspect the interactions Ryo has with Shenhua. These are amazing. They’re literally the best conversations Ryo has in all of the 2 games. Shenhua’s cheery and innocent, good natured personality makes it exceedingly hard for him to be the brooding jerkass anymore. A lot of that has to do with all the people he met who became his friends/mentors in Hongkong/Kowloon. He grew because of them. But Shenhua’s personality helped a great deal too. All of the sudden there are no distractions. Just the environment and her. What else would he do but chat with her? If you havent played Shenmue II I implore you to just youtube the conversations he has with Shenhua and compare with Nozomi yourself. It’s like night and day and p much the ultimate signifier for his growth throughout the progress of the game. Now this is venturing a into fan theory territory: the fan base is p much split down the middle of what kind of romantic role Nozomi is going to play in Ryo’s future. To me shes the child hood love interest that never became more due to him being preoccupied and her frankly not actually being available either. It would seem sensible to accept this as a chance missed as a part of moving on. I am positive he is going to end up with Shenhua as she resumes transforming him from this brooding dude preoccupied with revenge to a guy who truly internalises the lessons he learnt in Hongkong and adds a big helping of humanity to it.

Not to excuse his behavior towards Ine-san and Fukuhara-san (because you rightly identify them as cold) part of that is also rooted in japanese culture. With Iwao’s death Ryo became the patriarch of the family. Ine-san may scold him but in the end it is not her place to deny him. Likewise Fukuhara-san was Iwao’s student so that kind of transferred to Ryo now. The bigger point here is that he abandons his responsibilities for them. I don’t think it’ll have actual negative impact for him in story, but there is likely going to be a moment of awakening that it is high time he returns home and takes care of the martial arts school.

I am sorry this actually took a 2nd day to finish but I got busy watching Collisions 2017. I only listened to it once but in seghments. Since I am such a huge fan of the game I wanted to be fair and not overanalyze your review and find nitpicks where there arent any.

While the individual play style is entirely up to each player it is my recommendation for everyone playing this, it to give it time. Let it breathe. Just waste your time away doing fun stuff. You’re going to miss out on a lot if you’re playing it in the way youd play most linear games where you just resume with the next goal in the main quest like crossing of a check list. You are not supposed to leave this early. During my fast plays I still never finished before christmas. At best I managed a jan 15 arrival in Hongkong just to see if I manage to arrive on my own birthday lol. But in all seriousness the time limit for this game is so goddamn long because you arent really suppoed to rush through this too fast. Leaving by the middle of January or even by the end of it makes for an overall better experience IMO (lol I just heard the 10 hours thing and I damn near lost it haha. look as I said it’s ok to play it any way you see fit, but seriously 10 hours literally means just the main quest. no goofing off. You’re missing out on stuff and an overall more majestic experience is all I am saying) To me the harbor segment was super fun cuz it was cool figuring out how you get the most out of each day, incl at least some good toy collecting and maybe training (usually didnt need that anymore at this point). By no means I am trying to tell you to like an aspect you didn’t, but to me this very much comes down to how deep you immerse yourself in the world. If you let the time go by slowly (dont run basically😉) such things as working have a deeper impact on how you experience it - then 2h lunch break still feels like 15 minutes. It was literally the opposite for me in that the harbor is when I am p much forced to move the plot forward instead of just goofing off so much. I know people who share this kinda play style feel the same way that the harbor is - to us - where it really picks up.

Before my review of this is over I’d also like to personally recommend the japanese dub over the english dub. Yeah the english dub feels weird at times but this is also intentional. A good comparision to that would be the lines in the Spartacus TV show. Just like that one was speaking latin in english the Shenmue dub was speaking japanese in english if you get my meaning. The VAs talked about this on the SEGANerds podcast during the kickstarter. Of course due to having played it so much it works for me but it’s easy to tell the difference. At the same time I can not praise the english VAs enough for being incredible heroes who promoted the Kickstarter hard, it was amazing. I love all of you guys. Thank you for your passion. Will def play Shenmue III in both japanese and english to honor all of you!
