Using impersonal language with a named/known character always throws me off - I would rather read ‘he/him/she/they/a name etc’ a thousand times in a row than read ‘the other man/woman’ (to reference an established character) even once. It just makes it feel icky/impersonal and takes me out of it

There was a time when Tommy didn’t feel much of anything when they were out at a bar together and Sal was doing his Sal thing; namely, flirting with women like it was his hobby, which − it sort of was. He wasn’t one for commitment, he’d said, he liked playing the field, he’d said, why settle down with one person when the world was his oyster, he’d said.

It was kind of fun to watch, actually. Sal DeLuca, waltzing in the badge and ladder joint around the corner from the firehouse, with his cocksure strut, still in his uniform, throwing a flirty wink at the bartender while ordering himself a drink, all eyes on him as he walked up to their usual corner booth, sitting across from Tommy with a self-satisfied little grin. That’s all it took for him to catch their eye − he knew exactly what he was doing, and he loved the attention he got from the female patrons of the bar, that much was obvious, even when he wasn’t looking for a hook-up. 

“This round’s on the house, boys,” their waitress says, setting down two more bottles of the beers Sal had ordered for them before Tommy had even arrived. 

This, too, was not unusual. He’d charmed his way into freebies more times than Tommy could remember. Once, when the two of them were flying to a bachelor party in Vegas, he’d even got them bumped up to first class, with an all-access pass to the business lounge, completely free of charge. 

“Is that so?” Sal grins up at her, that sultry look in his eyes. “How come?”

The way his stomach twists as he watches the interaction catches Tommy by surprise. He picks up his bottle, finishing off the drink, and fiddles with the empty bottle for a moment, resolutely ignoring the new one that the waitress set down in front of him. 

“Let’s just say it’s a birthday freebie,” she says, addressing Sal, 

“It’s not my birthday,” Sal says, playing along, and turns to Tommy. “Is it your birthday?”

Tommy presses his lips into a thin line. He shakes his head. 

“Wellll,” she says, still focused on Sal, and then adds, “I won’t tell if you won’t tell,” and gives him a little wink before she walks off. Sal smiles and shakes his head and easily slips back into the conversation they were having right up until the interruption, and it’s easy for Tommy to forget all about that weird feeling in his gut and continue drinking and shooting the shit until the match starts and they turn their attention to the TV above the bar. Sal slides across the booth until they’re sitting shoulder to shoulder, saying something about getting a better viewing angle, but there’s a mischievous glint in his eyes as he looks at Tommy and hooks his ankle around Tommy’s under the table − and God, if it didn’t make Tommy blush like some goddamn Victorian era damsel being courted by the most eligible bachelor in town.

omg so glad you asked bc I’ve got a few

so my main one is that tommy actually has nothing to do with the main emergency bc my guy is at home passed tf out after getting home from a 48 hour shift like an hour before shit hits the fan and doesn’t find out about what’s happened until several hours later after being woken up by buck showing up to his house absolutely bewildered and about a thousand missed calls and text messages

brad somehow convinces both bobby AND athena to get into a throuple ??? idk how but it works and bobby just spends the whole time confused how he let this man have so much power over him (and this is how we get to keep brad for the rest of the season)

gerrard comes back at the end of the episode and he has amnesia after hitting his head and suddenly he’s nice to everyone and tries to start a weird father/son thing with buck who is not here for it bc bobby is his fire dad (which could lead to the golfing pic that we saw)

this one isn’t wild but I just really hope for it to happen - but when everyone is safe and sound and the firefam are having a post “one of us nearly died again” bbq, hen notices eddie just stood by himself in the corner, riddled with anxious energy, so she goes over to him and they have a heart to heart about chris and just talk out his feelings (pls just give me more of this dynamic or just more of eddie reaching out to people other than buck)

Probably not very fun fact: While in the video they show Stump being burned alive, in real life* he was beheaded before being burned. Which would be merciful if he hadn't been tortured before that. The many steps of his sentence correspond to the many different crimes he was accused of so each of them had to be punished separately. But that doesn't make a good video.

*We do not know for certain if Stump existed and if so, what his crimes were. Somehow I hope he didn't because that would mean he didn't suffer but the early modern time was fucking brutal.

I had to think about this one! Probably Cosmere (the universe that exists in Brandon Sanderson's novels). I bought a set of miniature models recently that I want to paint. However, in the summer I'm planning on attending a supernatural convention, whiiiiich will be quite costly. 😅

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

Yes and yes because it's Buddie. 😉 I wouldn't necessarily have called them a NoTP before, but they never managed to convince me there's more than friendship between them, even before Tommy came into the picture. But now that Tommy has captured Buck's heart (and ours) and with everything that went down in fandom Buddie has turned into an outright NoTP for me.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

The BuckTommy breakup arc, obviously. It's so poorly done, it's so inconsistent with what we've seen before and it's completely pointless.

there were so many thoughtful responses to this post! i wasn't expecting to get so many sincere answers, i was just thinking out loud, so before i start responding i just want to say thank you :)

i'm going to be responding just in one big reblog by @ ing people via common threads which popped up in the reblogs/replies, since i don't want to reblog this post ten times, each with one response... this might be kinda weird to @ everyone, but i think this is the most organized and efficient way to go about it.

also, small edit to the original post before i start responding, i'll say that i came to disagree with the way i phrased this: "bothers me," but i didn't want to edit the post because it seems disingenuous to do so. so, it doesn't bother me, i just can't really explain how it makes me feel, it's kind of like a mix of uncertainty and yearning at the same time. kind of like, "it's a strange predicament, i think i already know the answer, but it makes me sad all the same." not really sure how to phrase that other than "bother," but know that it is a bother that comes from inside, not outside (i.e., i'm not mad at anyone)

thus commence the replies!! i'm going to organize them by common reasons brought up:

#1 : there are many adaptations of the witcher, it's not just the books:

I think in the end most witcher fans, especially in the English speaking part of the internet, don't consider themselves exclusively game or book fans. The series became popular outside eastern europe through the games so most fans see themselves as both game and book fans. - @jawanaka

This. There's already too many adaptations for anybody to like only parts of the whole witcher experience. Never heard somebody say they're a Sapkowski fan. I, certainly, am not, even if that does by no means downplaying his creation. - @do-androids-dream-ao3acc

i totally see where this is coming from, and i agree with you in that this is just fact that most fans take the books and the games as existing on the same continuum - even when we acknowledge that they are separate things, it's not the common fan experience to really distinguish between them.

but also, i mean, i would consider myself to be a fan of the books "exclusively" - meaning, not that i don't like the games, but i'm not really interested in talking, blogging, or making fancontent (art, fic, analysis) about the games in the same way that i am about the books. like, i'm a fan of the games, but i'm not a dedicated, knowledgable fan, i don't really seek out conversations about them, i don't think about them in my free time, i don't want to analyze them deeply.

i don't really see the witcher as a cohesive experience or franchise, i see it like: these are the books, these are the games, they're separate things by separate creators, they have separate stories and meanings. i understand that's not the common fan experience, i wouldn't force that view on anyone else, but that's just how i see it. and i don't think i'm the only one, certainly.

I dislike the Witcher books actually. I know others who dislike the TV show. It really is possible for someone to only like a part of the adaptations or the canon. I like some parts of some of the Witcher games, and some of the fanfic, and that’s what makes me stick around. I’m very much not a fan of everything Witcher. - @straysinfiltrator

yeah, this is kind of what i'm saying, that it's possible for someone to only like a part of the witcher, i'm not a fan of everything witcher, either. it's just, the part i like is the books.

i guess i kind of illustrated my own point - because i said "witcher fans" in my original post above, which suggests all witcher fans of all witcher mediums - but really, what i meant was, "fans of the witcher book series". isn't it confusing to all go by the same name, in such cases when you're trying to specify just the books, just the games, or elsewise?

by this, i don't mean to divide the community or anything, what i mean is - it would help fans find more about the witcher books, if they were searching for specifically fan discussions and content about the books. like, using "sapkowski witcher" as a search term would help specify, "oh this is about the books and not the games." i've been in that situation a lot where i'm trying to find stuff about the books specifically, but only games stuff comes up.

#2 - non-witcher sapkowski + small english-speaking fandom

Many good points were made, but i want to add that Sapkowski himself considers the Hussite trylogy his "masterpiece". Calling yourself a "Sapkowski fan" would imply that you're a fan of not only the Witcher, but Hussite trylogy, his other short stories (Żmija, the stories from something ends, something begins [the other ones, not the Witcher themed ones], that one trpg he worked on in the 90s) and also his works reflecting upon English fantasy (Rękopis Znaleziony W Smoczej Jaskini, his book about Arthurian legends). Which would exclude the majority of non-polish fans since most of his works aside from the Witcher wasn't translated. - @dukeofdogs

oh definitely! all of this is true!

when it comes to the "popular" witcher, the only-books fans who can only speak english is like... at the moment, we could all dance on the head of a pin. but that's a starting point, a goal, like, i want to encourage more people who don't necessarily speak polish to read the books and get introduced to the 'book witcher'.

and with other works, that's also kind of a(n optional) goal, i think, right? that fans of the witcher books should be recommended, or at least told about sapkowski's other works and greater passions as an author, or at least given context to it (again re: english-only speaking fandom, the context and history is often lost, so it's left to being communicated between fans)

from what i can tell, there's not much of an international community for them now, but the way i am thinking about it, if the international fans of the witcher books acknowledged sapkowski's authorship more in relation to them, then there could potentially be a broader community for his works that are less popular relative to the witcher and then, maybe those could gain more of an international fanbase as well, if there was more "spill over" from the witcher to other works.

translations, whether official or unofficial, follow demand, so if there were fans that could say - hey we want this - then someone's got to make it, eventually...

personally, i want to read maladie (short story) and the hussite trilogy, but i'm not sure where to start because i don't know much about arthurian legend and i know next to nothing about the bohemian wars, so i feel like i need to prepare and study before i read them (it's not like the witcher where you can kind of just jump in).

but if there was a cohesive fanbase that i could be with, talk to, learn from, be encouraged by, get recommended starting points of research from, then it might not be such a daunting task? like, in the witcher books fandom, there's always someone ready to field questions about such-and-such scenes. or maybe, right, maybe fans will tell me - "don't read it, it's not worth it, you won't like it," which is also an opinion i'm open to hearing! i was also interested in musicians and in the bomb crater, but there's no translations for them yet (and though i could just stop being lazy and run them through google translate, that's no way to read...). but one which i had the translation for and also which doesn't require any prior research (except maybe a couple of wikipedia pages) is golden afternoon, and i liked that one! (as dark as it is!)

i kind of put this in my tags on the original post: (...) ALSO i think if we united under his name then there would be more inter-series fans (...) ive always wondered where the fans of the hussite trilogy are (online). is there an online fanbase? (...) and if we do that then we can get more and better translations hopefully (...) like theres still no official translations for a ton of his short stories.

#3 - author fan relations

i have nothing more to add to these ones, this is just good sense and accurate, lol. i mean, maybe there is a compromise in here somewhere, and to clarify, i do NOT mean we should be out here trying to have parasocial relationships with authors 😅

i just think it's easier for me, in some part, to specify "i'm talking about the witcher that is sapkowski's story," for the reasons in #1 - i like the books, i mean there are the parts that i don't like, but i like them overall as a cohesive body of work, with a beginning and end. to specify "sapkowski's witcher" i think also means to acknowledge all the fucked up parts too, for example, the sexism in sapkowski's witcher is not the sexism present in cdpr's witcher...

Also don't quite share your experience in how people refer to the author as the name of the fandom. HP fans called themselves that long before R*wling had shown her entire ass to the world. Likewise, I've sen people refer to themselves as fans of Narnia, A Song of Ice and Fire or Wheel of time, not C.S Lewis, George R.R. Martin or Robert Jordan fans. Tolkien among fantasy authors seem rather unique in this regard. - @jawanaka

good to think about! yeah, i guess it depends on the author. i mean i've seen people call themselves george rr martin fans, but... yes, it relates back to like, do we really want to have this name-basis connection to the author. i guess it also depends on how it's used in conversation, too - like if you're recommending a body of work, you might drop the author name, but if you're saying you're a fan of a series, you will just say the name of the series.

maybe it also comes down to the word "fan" - like, there's a difference between "fan of sapkowski's witcher" and "fan of sapkowski"? no one is disputing that he wrote the book series, but for some fans, it's like, do you have to rub it in?

I think one reason is because of the lawsuit against cdpr, that really painted him as “old man yells at video game” when in reality he didn’t hate the content of the games like some people report, he just thought he deserved some of the royalties from something that became so internationally popular, its a pretty standard practice actually, in fact he seems to be alot more laissez faire about the use of his work than most authors - @supercupcakecollector-love

and yes haha i feel like this is a major reason why a lot of people don't like even bringing up his name. it's quite unfortunate imo because i feel like there are much more valid reasons to hate him other than this one... i'm all for being a hater but let's start with the stuff he deserves to be hated for, like the descriptions of young girls' breasts

it kind of bothers me that witcher fans don’t really unite under sapkowski’s name like other fans of fantasy authors do (e.g. “tolkien fans”).

in practically any other fandom of fantasy books, save for the particularly rancid authors known for their disappointing and shameful behavior or views (e.g. jk r*wling), it’s just regular business to say the author’s name. but sapkowski’s name is treated like a dirty word in the witcher fandom, for really no good reason…

it must be asked — what is stopping us from doing so?! why don’t we call ourselves sapkowski fans. it would be much easier than saying “i’m a fan of the witcher, but only the books, i don’t consider the various adaptations canon, etc. etc.” … “half a hundred words, when three are enough!!”

Brilliant Minds vs. 9-1-1

A True Lover vs. an Abusive Lover

A post from @bugboybuck about how Brilliant Minds is telling a queer love story (Wolf x Nichols) compared to 9-1-1 (Buck x Tommy) intrigued me. If anyone interested, here's a playlist of Wolf x Nichols' story on YouTube:

A. SIMILARITIES & DIFFERENCES

There are things in the Wolf x Nichols's love story which are similar with Buck x Tommy's of 9-1-1:

Dr. Josh Nichols (a.k.a. Nichols) is a gay man in his 40s.

Nichols is a military veteran, who survived the DADT era.

There's a period when Nichols didn't appear on screen.

Nichols broke up with Dr. Oliver Wolf (a.k.a. Wolf) when their relationship was still new.

Sound familiar?

And here's how Brilliant Minds is telling its queer love story better differently:

1)) Interactions between Wolf and Nichols are front and center. They're collaborating a lot in handling high risk medical cases. It helps that both Zachary Quinto (who plays Wolf) and Teddy Sears (who plays Nichols) are main casts, like Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael Silva in Lone Star. Thus, Wolf x Nichols' relationship is treated more like Tarlos' relationship than Tevan's.

2)) Wolf fought for their relationship. Brilliant Minds depicts Oliver Wolf as a genius and relentless doctor. Wolf does anything and everything for his patients. He broke a bunch of hospital rules, challenged the head of neurosurgeon (Nichols), took a patient out of hospital right before a scheduled surgery to grant the patient's last wish. Even when a patient gave up and wanted to die, Wolf didn't give up. Thus, when Nichols broke up with him, Wolf also didn't give up. He fought for another chance with Nichols.

Wolf's attitude is very much in contrast with Buck's. On episode 4x05, Athena has said that being Buck meant never give up. However, Buck's attitude after Tommy broke up with him is pretty much giving up their relationship.

3)) Nichols' presence could be felt even when he was not on screen. When Nichols had to attend a medical conference out of the city, his name was mentioned in conversations. Wolf had been sending him voice messages (Wolf didn't have a mobile phone), until finally Nichols sent Wolf a mobile phone as a gift. Wolf was also seen receiving a call from Nichols using his brand new mobile phone. Each of those scenes only last a few seconds, and Nichols was not physically present in them, not even his voice was. However, the audience could feel his presence, and feel that their love story is continuing.

How is this contrast with the way 9-1-1 treated Tevan? Oh, where should I begin? @do-androids-dream-ao3acc has posted signs that the show has undermined Tevan's relationship once Season 8 started, even before the break up:

Nobody ever mentioning Tommy, not even Buck.

Not one kiss in all of those episodes, except the fleeting cheek kiss in the break-up episode.

Six months and still no obvious inclusion of Tommy (back) into the 118 group, except when he was accompanying Buck who was waiting for Denny's surgery in the hospital.

After the break up, the signs are even more clear:

Buck was flustered when talking with a woman during his anniversary date with Tommy. Despite making Buck seemed rude and tactless, what is the actual purpose of this scene? It seems to remind the audience that Buck is still attracted to women, hence laying the ground for Buck's rebound relationships which most likely will involve women.

Buck didn't seem to mourn the break up. He was channeling his supposed brokenheart into baking, but he didn't seem to be grieving. He seemed anxious/upset when talking about Tommy, but not mourning or depressed. His demeanor even back to normal on the scenes when he didn't talk about Tommy, like on emergency scenes, or while watching Hotshots together with his team. Heck, Tevan fans have been grieving the relationship more than Buck has.

They made light the break up by having Buck baking. The show might want to emphasize the 'comedic' side of this supposed 'romcom'. However, it came off as tone-deaf since the audience was grieving more than Buck was.

People close to Buck seemed to want him to move on instead of to be back together with Tommy. In Season 7, Bobby said Tommy was good for Buck, and Henren asked Tommy about his intention with Buck. However, after the break up, no one seemed to talk to either Buck or Tommy about it. They even took Buck's phone away in one ocassion, prevented Buck from contacting Tommy and having a discussion with him like adults.

B. THE MIXED SIGNALS

Despite the above negative signals, the show has also been giving baits positive signs about the possibility of Tevan's reunion:

Buck is still in a baking frenzy because he is supposed to be still thinking about Tommy.

#TommybubblesBuck in episode 8x07 "Hotshots".

In a Screen Rant article, Tim Minear blatantly mentioned about the possibility of characters' return, including Brad and Tommy without promising anything concrete.

So far, we have been receiving mixed signals about Tevan's reunion:

If they haven't planned for Tevan's reunion, why did they show #TommybubblesBuck? It would be easier if they showed that Tommy went cold turkey on Buck.

If they've planned for Tevan's reunion, why didn't they made the 118 family showed more concern/support on the relationship? It would more make sense if Bobby/Hen/Maddie encouraged Buck to talk to Tommy.

If they have planned for Tevan's reunion, WHY DID THEY SEND MIXED SIGNALS AT ALL???

It is clear that Tevan's relationship is popular. Their kissing scenes went viral...twice, and the unusual amount of complaints about the break up indicates that even some parts the General Audience want them to be together. The queer love story has also attracted new viewers to the show, some of them are among us in this fandom. If they've planned for Tevan's reunion, there is no use in giving negative signals. It could even make people misunderstand and stop watching the show, thinking that Tevan has broken up for good.

Sending mixed signals becomes made sense when we realize that THEY ACTUALLY DIDN'T PLAN TO MAKE TEVAN REUNITED.

There's already one established queer couple on the show: Henren. Having another queer couple incures a risk of upsetting the majority of the audience. However, due to its popularity, making the break up permanent also incures a risk of losing a part of audience, who has been watching the show mainly for Tevan.

The safest way to keep most of the audience is by giving the majority what they want, while implying other things to the 'non-majority, but-quite-significant-in-number' audience. It is possible that they plan to do tommybaiting until near the end of this season, before finally showing Tommy up to bait the audience to watch the next season. After all, they've been baiting Buddie stans for 6 years and counting. They made Buck admired/envied Eddie's physique. They made Maddie teased Buck about his boycrush on Eddie. They made a stranger in Santa Clause costume thought that Christopher was Buck & Eddie's son. They made Buck Christopher's legal guardian, although insisted in an interview that it was a platonic gesture. They made Eddie showed up in front of Buck, right after TK implied that Buck was queer. They made Eddie talked about beard, right after he mentioned that he was straight. They made Buck sat next to Eddie in his underwear on 8x06. They've been giving mixed signals to Buddie stans all these years, to keep them watching & supporting the show, without ever making Buddie canon. They could apply the same strategy to a slightly different group of audience.

C. THE ABUSIVE LOVER

@hunter470 has pointed out how bad the show has treated Tommy and Tevan's love story overall. It is even more obvious when being compared to the way the show treated Brad Torrence, the fake captain of Hotshots. I hadn't fully comprehended how bad it was, until I watched Wolf x Nichols' love story in Brilliant Minds, then compared it to Tevan's. It is similar like being in an abusive relationship. You didn't know how bad you've been treated by 9-1-1, until you experience what a healthy relationship with Brilliant Minds can give you.

At this point, I'm convinced that only a risk of losing audience could move the show to make Tevan reunited. The rating of 8x08 "Wannabe" is better than 8x07 "Hotshots", so I don't know whether us boycotting the show would be effective or not. Probably not. However, I plan to keep boycotting, for the slight chance of it'll help making Tevan reunited sooner, and to retaliate their deceitful way of baiting more viewers by promising a properly handled queer love story.
