the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

Probably the only thing giving me any hope at this point is that every few days some random gentile posts in the Jewish subreddit something along the lines of "I think I'm going insane am I going insane what's going on why is every single comment on my social media feed straight up Nazism why does nothing get taken down when I report it why is my niece simping for a terrorist organization what's happening are you guys seeing this shit." And the answer is always yes ofc we have been seeing this shit for a while. But it's always nice to get some confirmation that someone else is seeing it too.

Some food for thought on Self Aware AUs

cws: psychological horror elements, existentialism, ddlc mention and some use of machine lingo. this is mainly focused towards cookie run self aware aus, but this could apply to any fandom, really.

thinking about how horrifying a self aware au would be, strictly speaking. like, no magic, no multiversal shenanigans, just "these are characters INSIDE A GAME that become aware of the fact that they're in a game." of course you kinda have to take some liberties, but what would they be able to do, realistically? i understand the appeal of the idea, but i feel people take way more liberties than what would actually happen.

i mean, their options are extremely limited. you would think "well, why can't they just change their code?" but in effect, that'd be like trying to perform surgery on yourself while you're still awake.

speaking as a programmer, it's nearly impossible to edit anything inside of a program while it's running. you HAVE to shut it off before making ANY change. there are some cases where you can edit a program while its running, but you would be unable to see the effects until you reboot the software, and there's a good chance that any half-baked edits may cause a game breaking bug. they're insanely common in just small programs, god forbid a whole-ass game.

the best case for being able to make a significant change while a game is running would be using console commands/dev tools. you know that black box monika pulls up whenever she deletes a character? that's what i'm talking about. she can't change or add anything significantly new to the game, but a console? a console is completely different.

while trying to edit code while a program is running is, again, practically impossible, accessing console commands is a whole different ballpark. a game like crk has to have a console, they're basically mandatory to make any bug-testing actually feasible. the only drawback is that you're limited to the actual commands available, which is probably just simple stuff. there's also a good chance that a dev tool like that would be removed from the public releases of the game.

stuff like this probably means that only cookies who already have some programming experience under their belt would be the ones able to do anything significant. cookies like strawberry crepe, clotted cream, and mozzarella (or the cheese empire cookies in general) probably have the most power here. i could also see black sapphire or butter roll having some knowledge on this end too, but they probably have more experience on the hardware end, rather than the software end.

meanwhile the beasts and ancients (minus golden cheese) have to squint at the screen old man style wondering what the fuck those youngins are doing.

that leaves us with the topic of the player. i mean, we all know that the player must be a godlike figure to them, but they can't really learn anything about them asides from how they interact with the world. again: anything they aren't already programmed to do would be basically impossible to achieve, so no checking the camera or looking up browser history. (and thank fuck for that too, i do NOT need a bunch of cookies seeing the shit ive searched up.)

they probably do what they can to make things easier for you, to keep you engaged, without scaring you off. a couple more materials and soulstones here and there, cutting down the timers on a couple things, sending you more notifications than usual (or even turning your notifications ON if you previously had them off.) to have more and more of your attention.

most of the cookies probably have mixed feelings about some sort of god having such an effect on their lives, but even then, you don't have as much of an effect as they think. you don't control the story. their fate is left up to the whims of faceless gods who only wish to use their likenesses as a motive to make more profit for themselves. they're entertainment. they're money. and the player is just another consumer, indulging on what is in front of them.

some of them want to be mad, but they can't. it's not like they know why they were designed this way. shadow milk especially hates your guts, but that's only because that means there's someone more powerful than him. he's the one most likely to try to do something, anything, to finally be able to one-up their oh-so wonderful and powerful god, but inadvertently breaks things beyond repair.

i'm not saying that the way self-aware aus are done right now are BAD, but i do think some people are missing their true potential. i hope that people see this and get inspired to write something beautifully horrifying, just for fun.

thinking about veilguard and bioware in general, i think we are reaching a point where people need to grapple with the inherent limits of what stories can be told in our Current Society and in AAA gaming companies.

on a labour level: mass layoffs, tons of developers leaving despite previously talking about how passionate and happy they were to be involved, not even paying severance, and crunching employees to the point of burnout. this is unfortunately pretty standard for AAA game companies.

on a cultural level: it is SO white and SO centrist-ly Canadian. i wrote up these asks outlining how. it is a repeated pattern of writing in which they go into tortured racial oppression allegories at best, while constantly peppering in a "but BOTH SIDES were wrong and made mistakes :( :( :(", in between their fictional atrocities that are clearly mirroring irl genocides and enslavement. or at worst, it's "the qunari are radical islamic borg" which has even less nuance. i personally thought, since dai came out in 2014, and a lot has changed since then about the world and in public awareness, that this would have filtered into the narrative and resulted in more satisfying and historically grounded writing. unfortunately not the case. it's shocking if you compare it to how sharp and aware and unflinching something like disco elysium is.

so what does this mean?

under these conditions, it is unavoidable that we get development by people who are rapidly cycled out of the company or demoralized into burnout. we get digestible, easy little soundbites of lore without much substance, because any complexity needs more time and coordination rather than the process of "quick, we have these assets, a lot of people involved in making them just got laid off, we need to make Something by next quarter to show the CEO". we get very little cohesion between games, despite the clear intent from dai to have so many plot points set up to follow through in a sequel, because the team and development are so chaotic that they can't hold onto a vision and complete it.

we also get this inherent caution and "conservatism" from the narrative, because on an ideological level, they're largely white people who want cops to be included in pride. so any major change to even a fictional society is Bad and Scary, and shouldn't be done without making sure that every character finger-wags appropriately at non-state violence. there is clearly not much ideological or even ethnic diversity within the leadership; or at least not enough that anyone there felt comfortable even speaking up on minor issues like the Incredibly Orientalist Isabela Outfit, let alone anything larger.

i don't personally think there's too much value in trying to analyze veilguard's plot or lore at this point. the final product is chaotically developed and does not seem to reflect the goals of the creators as set up in prior games, it's basically a ship of theseus in terms of the people and ideas involved in making it. this is sad for all of us, who were interested in the story, and attached to the characters, and were creatively fulfilled by engaging in the fandom. it's probably worse for the developers who have lost their jobs, burnt out, or feel unhappy with the game that they spent years of their life working on. it's certainly miserable as an indictment of The Industry, as well as the general societal climate of white Canadian centrism.

the solution is to create a society where people can develop games in peace and prosperity and stay on projects for longer, rather than constantly getting turfed out without severance pay. and to get some genuine leftists, poc, and indigenous people on staff who can weigh in and provide significant input, rather than a Council Of Liberal White Edmontonians every time.

in the meantime, at the very least, let's please stop preordering AAA games and supporting companies who notably abuse their employees.

Oh look, it's that time of the year again :'D (how tf did that happen??) Anyway, hm. Mental health-wise this year was the worst in quite some time for me, so for some months I literally only had one, maybe two finished pieces to choose from. BUT on the plus side I'm fairly happy with most of the drawings I did finish, so that's good! I'll just focus on that, and on all the things I still want to improve on in the future. Here's to hoping 2025 will be less rough, and a little kinder, to all of us :)

This is so shanks coded to me. Like he just keeps losing people and he never learns how to deal with it. So much so that he becomes the abandoning parent. He literally knows nothing else all he has as a frame of reference is all the adult figures in his life leaving him and telling him it is for the best. So why exactly wouldn’t he believe that the best way to love someone is by letting go?

He does it to Luffy, he does it to Uta and in some ways he does it to Buggy and Mihawk too. Because he never just asks them to stay. He lets Buggy run out of his life even though it was pretty obvious that Buggy wanted Shanks to fight for this to take a stand a real one on a conviction for once and he…doesn’t, he just lets buggy leave.

And then he hitches his wagon to the most flighty (dude is literally a bird motif 😭) mother fucker he can find. he lets Mihawk wander in and out of his life as he pleases regardless of what is best for either of them. Because maybe Mihawk has nothing better to do 👀. Maybe he would say yes now if Shanks asks. but Shanks would rather die than ask, would cut off his other arm before he even attempted to “clip Mihawk’s wings”

And that’s like the truth of it. Shanks has been abandoned by every person that has ever loved him besides his crew and he knows they will never leave him. But Maybe he just wants someone to stay not because they call him captain.
