so i had the idea floating a while ago about a specifically just vampire, more urban fantasy au that shifted into this broader monster period setting one instead. i feel like that original idea might have actually come off a similar post by someone else or maybe a zecret santa prompt but it was so long ago i dont remember so if anyone does lmk... but most of the extent of my thoughts on that were converting sois into a vampire hunter secret society and that it was funny to have them tracking aoi thinking surely this suspicious edgy dude was a vampire. and it turning out they are right he's kidnapping people but he's actually entirely human and doing it to keep his vampire sister alive - i literally dont remember how much of that was my own idea sorry 😿

for me half the appeal of pondering any dramatically different entire setting changed AU like these is seeing what completely different circumstances can be made to still keep the core of the characters intact. and then some of the other half is how it would change them

i think vampire akane works very well as a comparison to her circumstances in 999. undead creature existing in a burdened state between life and death, burns up in the sun, forced to harm others to sustain her own existence... vampire depictions vary wildly but it's fairly common to depict them with some level of psychic or mind control powers too

the vampire idea changed form into a broader monster au when i got to talking about it with a friend and expanding on the ideas a lot the idea with her being a "half vampire" is further mirroring her schrodingers cat state with her having undergone a partial incomplete transformation somehow. so while she's very psychically powerful she's physically frail and sickly trying to sustain being stuck in the middle and can't access her full potential. and probably she can only resolve this and complete the transformation by going on a long revenge quest to complete a succession ritual drinking the blood of Evil Rich Vampire Lord Hongou who originally turned her. (and she should need junpei to achieve that for some reason but uh didn't manage to figure out a reason Some Guy could be essential to that) no matter what though she doesn't have the option to reverse the process and go back to being human. she can only go on by embracing becoming what she feared.

😿Dog dies

When I first saw this movie I remember being in such awe and this time I just don’t get what I saw the first time around. I think I was just impressed by how they tied the whole thing together better this movie but still the actual videos themselves weren’t all that impressive.

My first time watching this I gave it five stars and I really don’t feel that way now, the movie was decent but certainly not perfect. Before I literally wrote “The other movies led up to this point and it is all that matters.” but having watched it again with fresh eyes that have seen so much good horror… It’s alright. I guess when I first watched it I had caught the virus but not so much this time. Did I have high expectations considering I had rated it perfect before? Not really! I was just excited to see an old friend, you know? Either way it just didn’t cut the mustard.

Our videos are all tied together by a massive car chase going on with a suspicious ice cream van that is tearing through town and we have a random homeboy that decides it is a great idea to leave his home and start recording BUT then the shady van takes his girlfriend (not cool!). He gets a call from her and that leads us to our first video. To begin, magic is real! A magician's assistant is spilling the beans because her magician is an evil little man who feeds people to his magic cloak! His assistant, Scarlett, who has aspirations to be a magician herself, found tapes of her boss, Dante, murdering a man so she called the police on him. He used his magic cloak to summon her though and attempted to kill her too. She used her own magic and sleight of hand to tie Dante to his cloak and doom him, saving herself and leaving a mystery of “Where did Dante go?” We are then back in the chase, homeboy has himself a bike and is trying to catch the van. We randomly find ourselves at a backyard party where everyone thinks the search party is for them, an uncle gets his dog hurt so he kills everyone at the party, but then a propane tank explodes. Anyway.

The second video is a door to another dimension. Mystery genitals, as you would probably guess, but we will get to that part. A scientist makes a portal door to a parallel dimension and it works! With very little background checking on his double they switch places for 15 minutes to do whatever they want in each other's dimensions and what could go wrong? Turns out a lot of things, like that the people in the other dimension have flashlight faces and do weird sex rituals. He barely makes it out back to his side (dimension A) while in dimension A while Guy B is attacking Wife A with Guy B’s sharp toothed alien puppet penis. (WACK) Guy B runs away because Wife A gets a knife to defend herself and he goes back to Wife B who is mad because of what Guy A did so she uses her sharp toothed alien puppet vagina to eat Guy B… Then Wife A kills Guy A because she thinks he’s the one who attacked her! Does it make sense? No? Okay! Back to the chase our homeboy is still struggling but we meet a girl stripping for the camera but then she starts to hold the guy up? Turns out she has a bone to pick with the porno guy for posting inappropriate videos of her without her consent. He is scared at first but then he turns the tables and has his hands around her neck before they are hit by another car. ANYWAY.

Third, some skateboarders get wrapped up in some Satanism. At first they are just filming a sick skateboarding video but then one of them gets an abrasion that bleeds on a creepy drawing that is clearly for some ritual and the blood burns up! Then all these spooky people come and attack the skate crew! And then the spooky, scary skeletons. The boys deck the boney bastards with their skateboards and make it out but there is some sort of beast that has been summoned that comes out just as this video comes to an end. Back in the world of the car chase our homeboy has caught up with the suspicious ice cream truck and inside are cameras and monitors all showing him on video. Then his girlfriend appears and demands him to press the upload switch, he says no, but she starts to hit her head until he does it (and even after). It really wrapped the whole thing up quite nicely and when our homeboy stumbles out of the van he finds his girlfriend on the opposite side on the ground, dead.

I WANNA talk about my boy best friend bc i love him sm 🥹🥹🥹we met during our freshman year of high school and we went to a small nerd school,, we both happened to be the only freshmen in the sophomore math honors class bc we both tested into it and i first i saw him as an enemy bc i thought i was supposed to be the only freshman!!! i wanted to be special!!! also i was kinda mean and he never took anything super seriously so we had that very joking dynamic and we never payed attention in class (me and another guy would always draw dicks and weed leaves over his notes and programmed an automatic dick-drawing graph on his calculator and that was the entire year)

but we became really good friends because we were the only freshmen and we bonded over that, but we started to get really close around junior year bc we finally started developing actual personalities and stuff, and the only class we had together was physics but he made it so fun and so comfortable, he brought his own lunch every day but he always walked me and stood with me in the lunch line so we could spend more time together 🥹

and during senior year his classes ended early but he'd wait until my classes were over so we could get a quick lunch before my lab every week! i had really strict parents so we couldn't hang out super often outside of school, he even switched his schedule around for me for our second semester so we could actually have a class together (we were definitely super loud in class i feel like everyone definitely were either annoyed at us or really enjoyed listening into our conversations) and now that we're in college we see each other less but we're trying to find more ways to hang out together

and when we were signing each other's yearbooks he wrote like four paragraphs about how much he appreciated me and i was just like 🥹 'cause he's a guy and he doesn't talk about his feelings that much and i just felt so loved and he definitely wrote the most in my yearbook out of everybody

BLIKE usually boys (esp in high school) don't really become friends with girls unless they have ulterior motives in my state but IDK i've never clicked with a guy as much as i've clicked with him, he's made it so clear that he'd never want anything romantic from me which i really appreciate bc a lot of guy friends that i've had usually end up confessing and im like 🧍‍♀️we don't talk about a ton of personal stuff a lot of the time but he's always super understanding when i need to talk to someone and super supportive like he's just SO easy to be with, when people say girls and guys can't be friends 'cause one usually wants something more with the other it's just not true !!

he's been dating this really nice girl for a couple months now (which lowkey caused so much tea in our friend group it's such a long story) so i try not to hang out with him alone a ton of the time, but we're gonna hang out this week and go to a research get-together thing!! it's been a little bit less than two weeks since i've last saw him so i'm super excited

😿dog half un-dies (I guess?)

This is a wild follow up to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD but is an extremely fun time and a great movie. Just don’t expect it to be like its predecessor. Special effects were a treat, use of the F-word felt very natural (who wouldn’t be saying it in their situation?), and the characters felt genuine and likable. You can see how it is inspired by the previous film and that influence only makes this one better. This movie is a romp and a half, I highly recommend it, (and as long as everyone is okay with a little female nudity) watch this with friends!

Right off the bat, let me just say that I love how the whole premise of this movie is based around the US Army royally screwing up AND making faulty equipment. At first I wasn’t sure how they were going to make this punky and colorful sequel have anything to do with its black & white dramatic predecessor but they used it as non-fiction in universe movie lore (think like Grave Encounters only it doesn’t lead you to the place where you die, oh wait).

Freddy is our friend who now works at a medical supply place (the kind that sells real skeletons, cadavers, and half-dogs) with this guy Frank who wants to scare the new kid with these sPoOkY metal barrels the army left behind back in 1968 (though Frank claims 1969), he says they contain bodies from the actual events that inspired the movie NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. They go down to investigate and to prove their strength Frank slaps a barrel like he’s a car salesman and the thing immediately starts to spew a thick yellow gas that knocks them both out. 

When they come to, the cadaver in the freezer is dancing a jig (and his little half-dog too) but here is where I have my first problem, the zombies are just so damn fast. For a reanimated stiff that was frozen, you’d think this first guy would be a little more… Stiff. But he runs out that door like a sprinter and doesn’t stop squiggling and squirming until they roast up his pieces in the crematorium. Not thinking about the smoke rising from the chimney (all thick and yellow) the team falsely assume the night is over. Rain pours the chemical smoke back down to earth and now the party really begins because Freddy’s punk friends are all rocking out in the graveyard (aptly named Resurrection) and suddenly this acid rain is gonna wake the dead.

Our girl, Trash, (that is her name, I’m not making fun of her), gets the death she always wanted, ripped apart by old men (the dream, really). The rest of the wildly named gang hightail it out of there and find themselves face to face with the original Barrel Boy. He is a goopy mess who not only knows how to use tools but understands the basics of leverage? This guy was really scary and freaky and wasn’t fast but he was persistent and I think that made him the worst of them all! He was also one of the Zoombobbies we watched just grab a character by the face and bite into their head which is a lot to process. Award for best/worst Z-Babe to the Gooey Basement Barrel Boy.

Speaking of dead people, Freddy and Frank just simply do not have vital signs anymore. They are talking and moving around but… Yikes, let’s get them some help. But oh, no! This sets off a domino effect of paramedics being called and eaten then cops being called then eaten. The wild thing is, it was the reanimated who kept calling for more help. That was very alarming to me. But it also confused me about what exactly these guys are. I joke around not always calling them “Zombies” but half of the time they seem like magical beings the way they have been decomposing in the ground for goodness knows how long but then were able to crawl out and now can sprint and have incredible strength? I don’t fully buy it (shenanigans). In NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, the threat was in hoards and being overwhelmed, but in this film (much like 28 DAYS LATER) just one Zomb-o in your area and you’re basically already dead.

Finally when things came down to it they contacted the number on the barrels, they asked the army for help, they thought they could handle it on their own and just bury the problem but they couldn’t. Turns out the army had a contingency plan in case this sort of thing ever happened. They just NUKED LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. I understand WHY they did it, but there have to be some real ramifications from just casually launching a nuke. I don’t think the rest of the world would just sit quietly when the US bombs one of its own cities. Maybe it is just our political climate now (vs 1985 when this film came out) but I think it is wild that that was their solution and they just ended it there like US citizens weren’t rioting in the streets saying, “I had family there!” and that neighboring towns weren’t suffering radiation poisoning… WILD.

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (1955)

😿Dog Dies

This movie suffers greatly not only from time but from trying to capitalize off of the success of the previous film. It just doesn’t have the same heart or charm as the original, at many points I found myself thinking, “Would The Creature really do that?” or “Not my Creature.” There is quite a bit about this that is done well, but too much is done in a goofy manner that makes this sequel more of a comedy than a horror.

There was a big emphasis on the fact that The Creature could not stay out of water for long at all, but that had me thinking a lot about not only the first movie but the design of the creature. In the first film you could see when Creach was on land he was breathing from his mouth and it seemed labored. When I first saw this I assumed he was just having more trouble, like the air was too thin for him (because he wasn’t fully human yet, he hadn’t evolved all the way, BUT he was getting there, bitch got two footsies!).

I think it would be very remiss to ignore the fact that the GilMAN had two FEET. Two big fucking, flip flopping, ground slapping, webbed-ass, clown feet.  So if you take that… and his whole human looking body… and the fact he could WALK on land… and that everyone was always saying “Ay yo, is he the missing link?" but then, suddenly, the same dude who pulls himself out of the water for fun, couldn't be out of water long? But he had feet? Really? Same guy?

And you have got to be the WORST ichthyologist on earth (Helen) if you looked at the Gilman and said "Yeah, he's doing fine in captivity, I mean, he's fighting his enclosure every chance he gets and then we shock him into submission, but look at all the life in those dead eyes!”

Honestly, it is so realistic though that we (the general we) would find this beautiful and deadly creature and say "Let's put that thing in Sea World!" and then they DID just that and he started to (try to) kill as SOON as you brought him out of the coma YOU (the 'scientists') put him in..

When he escaped and went to the sea (which, our boy’s a LAGOONMAN, why was it okay for him to be in salt water? That was okay with his gills? No mention of that? (I guess Florida in general is more toxic for our boy than some saline… I would love to see The Creature vs. Florida Man.) He tried to get between some cars but they were parked too close together and in a fit of rage (and bitch ass strength) Creach flipped one of the cars and then awkwardly wattled by. “GET THAT MAN TO THE OCEAN” (I actually screamed, alone, to my tv.)

Homeboy went and found Helen, (which is WACK) she's forgotten her dog (RIP Chris, why that name and why your death) and then they had fun swimming with Creach! Honestly it was a little more exciting and stressful that there were two people swimming this time because it felt more like each swimmer would write off anything they felt as the other swimmer and not think that something was amiss. I got the willies! (But when she caught Gilman's hands it probably felt WEIRD and very much non-human and she should have said to her old man friend "are those your old, clammy ball hands with those sharp fucking nails??" COME ON! Those nails had to be sharp. But I digress)

Skip forward to my FAVORITE death, after Helen was captured, the search party was on, but who actually found her? Two hapless college kids and Mount St Creach sent one flying into a tree for a good 7 seconds. It's one of the best/worst effects I've ever seen. The lad swung like Tarzan.

The ending is the same as the first movie, except it doesn't work this time (at all). Why did he let Helen go? It isn't that he was surrounded, there were more people around when he abducted her in the first place. It's almost as though he suddenly developed a frontal lobe as he is dying (because again, they have him basically die at the very end) as he gave her back to her land life. The Creach floats towards the bottom again. The End.
