REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (1955)
😿Dog Dies
Tumblr media
This movie suffers greatly not only from time but from trying to capitalize off of the success of the previous film. It just doesn’t have the same heart or charm as the original, at many points I found myself thinking, “Would The Creature really do that?” or “Not my Creature.” There is quite a bit about this that is done well, but too much is done in a goofy manner that makes this sequel more of a comedy than a horror.
⭐⭐.5
There was a big emphasis on the fact that The Creature could not stay out of water for long at all, but that had me thinking a lot about not only the first movie but the design of the creature. In the first film you could see when Creach was on land he was breathing from his mouth and it seemed labored. When I first saw this I assumed he was just having more trouble, like the air was too thin for him (because he wasn’t fully human yet, he hadn’t evolved all the way, BUT he was getting there, bitch got two footsies!).
Tumblr media
I think it would be very remiss to ignore the fact that the GilMAN had two FEET. Two big fucking, flip flopping, ground slapping, webbed-ass, clown feet.  So if you take that… and his whole human looking body… and the fact he could WALK on land… and that everyone was always saying “Ay yo, is he the missing link?" but then, suddenly, the same dude who pulls himself out of the water for fun, couldn't be out of water long? But he had feet? Really? Same guy?
And you have got to be the WORST ichthyologist on earth (Helen) if you looked at the Gilman and said "Yeah, he's doing fine in captivity, I mean, he's fighting his enclosure every chance he gets and then we shock him into submission, but look at all the life in those dead eyes!”
Tumblr media
Honestly, it is so realistic though that we (the general we) would find this beautiful and deadly creature and say "Let's put that thing in Sea World!" and then they DID just that and he started to (try to) kill as SOON as you brought him out of the coma YOU (the 'scientists') put him in..
When he escaped and went to the sea (which, our boy’s a LAGOONMAN, why was it okay for him to be in salt water? That was okay with his gills? No mention of that? (I guess Florida in general is more toxic for our boy than some saline… I would love to see The Creature vs. Florida Man.) He tried to get between some cars but they were parked too close together and in a fit of rage (and bitch ass strength) Creach flipped one of the cars and then awkwardly wattled by. “GET THAT MAN TO THE OCEAN” (I actually screamed, alone, to my tv.)
Tumblr media
Homeboy went and found Helen, (which is WACK) she's forgotten her dog (RIP Chris, why that name and why your death) and then they had fun swimming with Creach! Honestly it was a little more exciting and stressful that there were two people swimming this time because it felt more like each swimmer would write off anything they felt as the other swimmer and not think that something was amiss. I got the willies! (But when she caught Gilman's hands it probably felt WEIRD and very much non-human and she should have said to her old man friend "are those your old, clammy ball hands with those sharp fucking nails??" COME ON! Those nails had to be sharp. But I digress)
Tumblr media
Skip forward to my FAVORITE death, after Helen was captured, the search party was on, but who actually found her? Two hapless college kids and Mount St Creach sent one flying into a tree for a good 7 seconds. It's one of the best/worst effects I've ever seen. The lad swung like Tarzan.
Tumblr media
The ending is the same as the first movie, except it doesn't work this time (at all). Why did he let Helen go? It isn't that he was surrounded, there were more people around when he abducted her in the first place. It's almost as though he suddenly developed a frontal lobe as he is dying (because again, they have him basically die at the very end) as he gave her back to her land life. The Creach floats towards the bottom again. The End.

*if you've heard a couple songs but don't really know much about them, or haven't listened in a long while, you can play!
update: the highest votes went to gudetama. but was it correct? here are the full titles and albums.
❌ "put your hand inside the puppet head" - they might be giants
the opening verse makes reference to leaving one's job and how "it's sad to say, you will romanticise all the things you've known before. it was not, not, not so great". according to flansburgh, "the lyric revolves around the idea that looking back on anything colors it in sentimentality".
❌ "I'll sink manhattan" - they'll need a crane (ep)/miscellaneous T
this is a flansburgh song, but linnell explained its meaning in a 1989 interview with NME as "a song about a guy who somehow figures out how to sink the island of manhattan just to kill his ex-lover, so it's his apology to the other people he's gonna kill in between. he's just gotta do it!"
❌ "meet james ensor" - john henry
it's about james ensor (belgium's famous painter).
❌ "wicked little critta" - mink car
from the tmbg unlimited collection: "forged in the crucible of an eastern massachusetts junior high, this song expresses the dreams, fears and hopes of a new england young adult" the lyrics seem to suggest said young adult fantasising about being a sports star alongside bobby orr and john havlicek while goofing off outside.
❌ "working undercover for the man" - mink car
from flansburgh: "it's more a meditation on the "mod squad" [a 1968 crime series about cool undercover detectives] than anything else. the idea of the narc just seems... like, those episodes of "dragnet" where they have the young undercover dress in a hippie suit."
✔️ "talent is an asset" - kimono my house
the lyrics illustrate an overly-cautious family shielding their very gifted child from others, to keep him studious and soak in all the glory, and is heavily implied to be little albert einstein through puns on relatives and relativity. it's not by them, tho. it's by the band sparks. it came 2nd, so I think many of you recognised it (or really wanted to see the results!)
❌ "bee of the bird of the moth" - the else
"this is a song about a creature called a hummingbird moth, which imitates another creature, which imitates yet another creature. it's completely fucked up, and can only be explained in song!" so they did.
❌ "2082" - join us
thewrap's review of the album describes this song as, "a science-fiction short story (...) a protagonist who travels into the future, finds himself hobbled but still unhappily alive all the way into the next millennium, and travels back to the title year to smother himself with a pillow in a mercy killing". fun!
❌ "call you mom" - nanobots
referred to by linnell as an "oedipus pan" song, the lyrics follow an unfortunate young man beginning a relationship with a woman, getting dumped due to his behaviour of treating her like a mother figure, then infantilising a possibly younger woman in a different relationship and in turn leaving her, who goes on to experience the same issues. fun! (altho, the final chorus actually still refers to her Mom leaving, not her dad, I got the details wrong there in the poll).
❌ "gudetama's busy days" - dial-a-song / my murdered remains
yes, that's a real song. quote flansburgh: "(...) it is really just about feeling isolated from the world, even if you are in a crowded place and manically trying to keep up with your life. the character of gudetama appealed to me because he is such a mopey sad sack."
❌ "marty beller mask" - album raises new and troubling questions
this is real, too! it's just about how marty beller was actually an alter ego of whitney houston the whole time. he's not, but wouldn't that be interesting. the song name-checks multiple of her own in the lyrics. it was temporarily retired out of respect following houston's death (4 months after its release), returning to live performances ten years later in 2022.

Year in Review - Fest podfics
Tumblr media
Care of Magical Creatures (and sequels) by @arsenicjade for @polypodweek (E, 73k, 8 hours, Hermione x Remus x Severus)
Summary: In the aftermath of the War, Hermione finds her way.
the dogfather (and sequels) by @nonasuch for @goodgodfathersiriusblack (T, 48k, 5 hours, Remus x Sirius)
Summary: “I’m not a reverse werewolf either,” says the man. “I’m your godfather.”
Stay by vendettadays for Femslash February (T, 21k, 2 hours, Hermione x Pansy)
Summary: When Minerva said that Pansy Parkinson was to be the new Arithmancy professor at Hogwarts, Hermione thought she was joking. Then she remembered, Minerva McGonagall never joked. (Or, the progression of Hermione and Pansy’s relationship as Transfiguration and Arithmancy professors during the course of the school year.)
Higher and Higher (Temptation) by birdsofshore for @dracotops-harry (E, 28k, 3 hours, Draco x Harry)
Summary: Only Harry Potter could manage to put on a magical collar on impulse and find himself unable to take it off again. Now following Draco’s direct orders gives him intense pleasure, and Draco has a whole heap of troubles to deal with, not least the way Potter looks when the collar has him gasping with bliss. The whole situation would test the morals of a saint... and Draco’s no saint.
Silhouettes by @sweet-s0rr0w for @dronarryfest (E, 17k, 2 hours, Draco x Harry x Ron)
Summary: Draco's trying to fix the Burrow, Ron's trying to grieve, and Harry... well, just what is Harry actually doing, anyway? A tale of grief, gardening, and ghouls, bad memories, bad puns, and bad flirting, and nudity both accidental and very, very deliberate.
An Overly Considerate Friend by @the-francakes for @regulusblackfest (M, 8k, 47 mins, James x Regulus)
Summary: “Remus help! This is your fault!” James tried again. “I didn’t tell you to snog him, Prongs!” Moony snapped back. “TRUE. Technically, you didn’t. You didn’t say 'don’t snog Regulus,' you just said not to hit on him. WHICH I DIDN’T! So maybe protect me a little here please?” James floundered for excuses. Remus debated it for a moment - hopefully that please did itself justice and saved James’ life. “Snogging most definitely falls under flirting,” Remus decided educationally. All his friends were assholes, honestly. After tonight, James was going to start hanging out with Hufflepuffs.
One Night in the House of Black by @sleepstxtic for @ladiesofhpfest (M, 9k, 1 hour, Artemisia Black x Eunon Blackwood)
Summary: When a stranger comes knocking on the doors of her House, Artemisia Black must make a choice. What happens that night will determine the fate of her family forever.
As You Wish by @pineau-noir for @lcdrarry (T, 22k, 3 hours, Draco x Harry)
Summary: Draco was raised on a farm in the small country of Wiltshire; his favourite pastimes were flying on his broom and tormenting the hired farm boy. Though his name was Harry, Draco never called him that. On Harry's forehead there was a scar shaped like a lightning bolt, so Draco called him Scarhead. Nothing gave Draco as much pleasure as ordering Harry around Or a story about fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, True Love, and miracles.
you're alive by @the-houseryn for @harrydracompreg (M, 27k, 3 hours, Draco x Harry)
Summary: The most boring shift in the world, filled with Muggle car ride games to pass the time, was interrupted by a tow-head boy begging for help to save his papa and ultimately changed Harry's life from there on out. For the better, of course.
Where the Heart Is by @kohakhearts (T, 16k, 2 hours, Harry & Severus)
Summary: After the events at the Department of Mysteries in June—and all that came after—Harry finds himself once again stranded at Number Four Privet Drive. With only his own thoughts to keep him company, he takes to writing letters to the only person he thinks can help, if only he were still alive to do so. As it turns out, though, sometimes help can arrive in even the most unexpected of forms too.
Masks by Inell for DCC Monthly Microcreations (E, 1.4k, 9 mins, Draco x Harry)
Summary: Keeping secrets is tiring.
Clair de Lune by @constitutionalweasleymonarchy for @ladiesofhpfest (G, 2k, 13 mins, Luna Lovegood)
Summary: How wonderful to be seen.
Consequenses and Preparations by ChokolatteJedi for @ladiesofhpfest (T, 1.5k, 9 mins, Lucius x Narcissa)
Summary: Narcissa finds out that Lucius not only let an object the Dark Lord entrusted him with be destroyed, but he was the reason there was a basilisk in their son's school. She decides to prevent any further Draco-endangering stupidity on his part and disposes of him. Not that anybody guesses it's her, of course, she is a Slytherin. And she's going to make sure her son acts like one, too.
the residue of design by @fleurting for DCC Monthly Microcreations (E, 4k, 26 mins, Draco x Harry)
Summary: Rita Skeeter temporarily comes out of retirement to do an exclusive interview with The Chosen One. For some reason, Draco's friends think this has something to do with him.
Fawning Over You by @toxik-angel for @hptransfest (E, 39k, 5 hours, Draco x Harry)
Summary: Harry's not sure which would be worse: Ron and Hermione finding out he buys Draco Malfoy's premium pornography and an extra gift off his wishlist every week, or Draco Malfoy finding out Harry has a horrible, distracting, embarrassing crush on him. Alt title: Whore-ton Hears a Harry.
The Audacity of Lavender Brown by @malpal132 for @ladiesofhpfest (E, 6k, 42 mins, Charlie x Lavender)
Summary: Ron channels his anger through the blades of his skates and the hockey stick he uses on his professional team, but embarrassment isn’t an emotion he’s quite mastered. This disparity between them starts out small, then trickles into everything. For instance, he never kisses her with his tongue. Like, never. She straddles his lap and cards her fingers through his ginger hair, showing a bit of Victorian ankle every time she risks slipping her tongue past her own lips. It’s like his are vacuum-sealed shut. Instead of French sophistication, she’s more like a gerbil suckling from the sippy bottle attached to the side of its cage. She is abundant with nowhere to go.
Tempus Gratiae by @charlotterhea for @harryglots (M, 24k, 3 hours, Hermione x Severus)
Summary: Professor Snape verschwindet während Hermines 6. Schuljahr für eine Woche. Spurlos. Dann kehrt er zurück und alles ist wie vorher. Abgesehen von ein paar Details, die Hermines Neugier wecken. Aber erst sieben Jahre später fängt das Rätsel an, sich zu lösen.
The Chaperone by @annabtg for @ladiesofhpfest (T, 7k, 46 mins, James x Lily)
Summary: When Lily's father won't let her go out alone on a date with James, she has to resort to desperate measures: make it a double date with Petunia and Sirius.
Will you send me to Hogwarts? by @sleepstxtic for @ladiesofhpfest (G, 1k, 4 mins, Padma & Parvati Patil)
Summary: A letter to the Patil twins from their mother.
Tempus Gratiae (English version) by @charlotterhea for @etl-echo-audiobooks Time Collection (M, 24k, 3 hours, Hermione x Severus)
Summary: Professor Snape disappears for a week during Hermione's 6th year. Without a trace. Then he returns and everything is as before. Except for a few details that arouse Hermione's curiosity. But only seven years later the mystery begins to unravel.
A Case of You by @epitomereally for @hd-wireless (E, 97k, 12 hours, Draco x Harry)
Summary: Draco was doing just fine working as an Unspeakable in Paris, hanging out with his living and ghostly pals, inventing new spells, and definitely not thinking about Potter. Then, Lucius just had to break out of prison and turn his world upside down. Now, Draco has to return to England, where he is forced to confront how family ties bind us—and one infuriatingly fit Harry Potter.
Stick Shift by @stultiloquentia for @etl-echo-audiobooks Fantastic Fandoms Collection (E, 5k, 34 mins, Buffy x Spike)
Summary: Buffy stakes herself a vampire.
Still Clearly Up to the No-Good Things by @snsknene for DCC Monthly Microcreations (T, 4k, 26 mins, Draco x Harry)
Summary: “Tails,” Harry intoned to no-one in particular. “Harry,” Draco said kindly, “perhaps it is getting a bit too late for you. You are gibbering again.”
The Roommate by @romaine2424 for @hd-hurtcomfort-fest (M, 43k, 4 hours, Draco x Harry)
Summary: After one year in Azkaban, and two years of home arrest, Draco is going off to college. Myrrdin College is Oxford’s magical college, where one Harry Potter is currently attending. Both are going for their teaching certificates with Draco specialising in Potions and Harry in Defence Against the Dark Arts. The Headmistress has insisted all incoming professors must be degreed. However, the Board of Governors insist that Draco also must live in a Muggle house with limited allowance and take Muggle elective courses before he can become Hogwarts' new Potions Professor. Harry is coerced by others into helping Draco Malfoy survive in the Muggle world.

Transformers One Movie Review
RATING: 8/10
General thoughts: I am not a Transformers fan by any stretch of the imagination, and my knowledge starts and ends with the Michael Bay movies that I , but this movie was a wonderful introduction to the story of Optimus Prime and Megatron. I was incredibly invested with their friendship, and even though I knew how the story would end, when it finally transpired, it was no less devastating. To see two best friends divided by ideology kept me up for hours that night after leaving the cinemas. I need a second movie so badly, I beg you all to please go to the cinemas and watch the movie.
Notable thoughts (Spoilers mentioned):
Animation: The animation was spectacular. This is the most that I have seen 3D utilised to its absolute potential. The texture of the Cybertronians, the Quintessons and the Quintesson ships were incredible. The landscapes were brilliant and I felt so immersed in this world that I had no knowledge of. I also really loved the unique look of the deer-like creatures roaming on the Cybertron surface world. Their ‘ears’ glowing red at the sense of impending danger from the Quintesson ship was a masterful touch. In a similar vein, the positioning of characters in a shot was done exceptionally well. At no point did it feel like something was missing or someone was out of place.
Megatron/D-16: Even though Optimus Prime/Orion Pax was the main character of the movie, I felt that D-16 stole the show. His character arc was so fascinating to see the faithful worshipper of Sentinel Prime to a disillusioned, betrayed fighter dedicated to revenge. Brian Tyree Henry really made this character his own and the blinding rage in his voice sent goosebumps over my skin. The revelation of Sentinel Prime as the ultimate traitor to his people destroyed D-16 ten times over than Orion Pax, Elita-1 and Bumblebee combined because he was so completely devoted to Sentinel’s words. With that stripped away, what did any of that toil he put himself through mean? Nothing. It’s crushing though, when he stands up to Sentinel Prime and says that he has nothing to lose. What about his best friend, Orion? D-16was everything to Orion, but what was Orion to D-16? Even at the end, Optimus’ heart still bleeds for Megatron, even after what he has done. With hindsight, I can say that Megatron was correct in killing Sentinel Prime. Unfortunately, there is no peacefully dealing with someone like that. To leave him alive would be to only symbolically change things, and Iacon needed real change. However, Megatron’s bloodlust could not be quenched and though I disagree with Optimus’ equating of Megatron and Sentinel Prime’s actions, Megatron’s rule would have eclipsed Sentinel’s evil in sheer brutality.
Favourite scene: My favourite scene is most definitely towards the end when D-16 is trying to kill Sentinel Prime and Orion tries to stop him, but in doing so, he is mortally wounded. The climax comes when Orion hangs over the mouth of the void, grounded only by D-16. D-16’s confliction boils over- revenge or his friend? In the end, he makes his choice to become a worshipper of violence and bloodshed, and he lets Orion fall to his assumed death in a moment of violent divergence. The next three minutes are a brilliant display of birth. No words are spoken, only wonderfully dramatic music covers two parallel events: The fall of Orion into Cybertron’s core and D-16’s predator hunt for a wounded Sentinel Prime who cowers away in awesome fear. There is no stopping D-16 as he battles through Sentinel’s remaining guard and lifts Sentinel high into the air above a crowd and rips him into two. D-16 has died, Megatron is born the moment he rips Sentinel Prime’s stolen core out of his chest and places it into his own. At the same time this occurs, Orion’s broken body falls into the arms of the Original Primes and of his God. He is born with the help of the mystical Matrix of Leadership into what we know as Optimus Prime.
Other thoughts:
I noticed in the movie the use of the terms ‘arise’ and ‘rise up’ and how each term is attached to the Autobot and Decepticon groups. Though the terms are essentially the same, the connotations of each term can give another layer to the conflict. Optimus Prime uses the term ‘arise’ and when he is being reborn he is told to ‘arise.’ The definition of arise is to ‘emerge’ or ‘start to happen; exist.’ It suggests something natural, such as the assumption that every person (or Cybertronian) has the right to autonomy, or something peaceful. Optimus Prime in this movie chooses the role of a peacemaker, someone who seeks lawful justice and to unite his people. The term ‘rise up’ which Megatron chants out to his crowd of followers after defeating Starscreen and Sentinel Prime respectively invokes a sense of force or purpose. What is occurring is not natural and requires effort to ‘rise up.’ Effort and sometimes violence, which Megatron preaches. Aggressive force to overturn the system that Sentinel Prime has put in place. Not that this changes things, the use of these terms runs concurrent to the ideas that each group is trying to convey.

When I saw the season 6 posters, the little creatures intrigued me and I tried to understand what they meant. And then, reviewing my screenshots of Leola, she was friends with humans, elves and dragons, even magical creatures. So truly, these creatures could represent Leola's companions before her death. And that would make sense, because in the poster of the star's arcanum. We don't see any creatures, just Leola and her father! Besides, given that dark magic draws magic from these creatures, it would break Leola's heart to see that her father created this magic as a tool for revenge!

Book Blurb:
Spirit away with a whimsical fantasy filled with dark magic and flirty, polyamorous romance.
Cursed to haunt the river running through the magical spa town where she drowned, Gisela is a water nymph who dreams of returning to the living world and the family she left behind. All it takes to regain her humanity is a kiss from a mortal...but everyone sees her as a monster.
And then there’s Kazik, the brooding, interfering, spirit-hunting grandson of a local witch. He's determined to rid the world of unholy creatures like Gisela. After Kazik botches Gisela’s exorcism, she strikes up a deal. She won’t tell the other spirits that he’s losing his magic, if he agrees to play matchmaker and helps her get a kiss. But Gisela’s plan goes awry when Kazik also falls for the devilishly handsome young man that she sets her heart on—someone who could be linked to Gisela’s troubled past.
This delectable quest through the spirit world is cozily crafted with a hauntingly opulent atmosphere and a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers story told in multiple perspectives. Young adult readers are sure to kick their feet and squeal with glee at hilarious banter, scrumptious culinary delights, and endearing sisterhood and found family. An enchanting read for fairy tale enthusiasts and fans of queer romance!
Review:
She's a water nymph who dreams about becoming mortal again, he's the local exorcist constantly getting in her way, but together they'll have to help her seduce a mortal boy to turn her back into a human... yet they are all falling for one another while hiding dark secrets. Gisela was turned into a water nymph after she mysteriously died, with no memory of how she died, all she yearns for is to become a mortal again and go home to her younger brother... but in order for a water nymph to turn back into a human she'll need the willing kiss of a mortal. Cue local brooding spirit hunting exorcist, Kazik, who is as meddling as he is cute. Kazik has thwarted all of Gisela's attempts to seduce a mortal but when she makes a bargain with him he can't resist: if he helps matchmake her with a mortal and turn her back into a human she'll stop meddling with his affairs and leave him alone. Yet the guy that Gisela has her eyes on is none other than the town's most handsome and charming man... who is hiding much darker secrets than Gisela or Kazik could ever imagine. Oddly enough, all three individuals find themselves fall for each other, but can Gisela get her wish and when the secrets begin to reveal themselves will these three be able to be together? This is definitely the first book in a series and what a delightful start it was! I loved the lore and magic in this world, and Gisela was such a cute water nymph. Kazik and Aleksey were also very complimentary to the poly relationship. Kazik was the right amounts of serious but grumpy introvert while Aleksey was flirty and mysterious. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens, especially with how this one ends!! This is a wonderful queer fantasy read and the relationship between the three characters is just beginning and I can't wait to see how the drama unfolds in the next book!!
*spoiler: Aleksey is actually a demon possessing a body and he was sent with his younger demon sister Roza to watch Kazik, but he falls for both Kazik and Gisela. Kazik's family is the reason Aleksey is stuck and he harmed Aleksey's family, leading to Aleksey wanting revenge. Roza also attacked Gisela and Aleksey was there the night Gisela died as a human and became a nymph. Gisela's sisters trapped Roza and the book ends with Aleksey searching for Roza and contemplating what he will do with Kazik as he is in love with both Kazik and Gisela. Kazik admits his feelings for Gisela and gives her a kiss, turning her human, but Gisela also remembers how she died and she wants to confront Aleksey (despite also wanting to be in the poly relationship with both of them). Kazik is the only one who does not know that Aleksey is a demon or how he is involved with Gisela's death. *

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.
Tumblr media
Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.
Tumblr media
In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.
youtube
We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.
Tumblr media
Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.
Tumblr media
Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.

Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.

[Trope Interest] Twin Bodyguards and Their Hunter Sister in Supernatural Works
Tumblr media
Source: Promotional/Cover Art for Kyousougiga, Jiu Jiu, and Trese
By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting
For some time, I’ve been fascinated by the trope of twin bodyguards who can shapeshift from humans to dog forms and their accompanying female “hunter” character. I find it interesting that this trope appears with enough frequency to be noticeable, yet it lacks a specific name, unlike “Single-Mind Twins” or “Tag Team Twins.” There are several examples of this trope. To name a few examples, Kyousougiga (Japanese) features the character Koto being followed around by her “brothers,” A and Un; Jiu Jiu (Japanese) has Takamichi followed by her shape-shifting, half-demon wolf-dog familiars, Snow and Night; and Trese (Filipino) has Alexandra with her adopted brothers, Crispin and Basilio.
Upon further review, I think that the trope of twin sidekicks/bodyguards and female hunters in supernatural comics and animation likely draws from various sources of inspiration and cultural mythology. One possible influence is the traditional Japanese folklore of “Inugami,” or “dog spirit.” Inugami were said to be the spirits of dogs that were killed by humans and were often summoned and used for various purposes, including protection, curses, and revenge. In some stories, Inugami could take on human form and even possess humans and other animals. Interestingly, these spirits could become attached to bloodlines, following a family through their descendants.
Another possible influence is the Japanese mythology of Komainu, lion-dogs that guard the entrances of Shinto temples/shrines, or the Shisa, which serve a similar purpose. Both of these seem to have derived from the Chinese (or Imperial) guardian lions, which symbolize protection (one physical and one metaphysical). Either way, around the world and over time, dog spirits have often been portrayed as both guardians and harbingers.
While I’ve come to understand, at least in part, the dog-twins potential origins, I still struggle to understand or find a related myth to a singular female hunter-type character. There is Artemis, the famous greek/roman myth character who is goddess of the hunt, but her image and story rarely overlap with the hunter characters seen in works that have this two+one combination. Moreover, the close emotional bond that the three tend to share in the stories–often portrayed with familial-nature (adopted siblings with no romantic interests)–seems to be a significant factor in the continued use of this trope. Continuing in our prior examples, Koto is searching for the black rabbit/her mother; Takamichi is hunting demons, and Alexandra is after monsters.
The twin sidekicks are always depicted as “protectors” or “guardians” to a female lead, often with her occupying an adopted sister role rather than existing as a love interest. They are portrayed as loyal, fierce, and powerful, with the ability to transform into large, intimidating dog-like creatures to defend their master. Overall, the dog servants are depicted as essential members of the hunting team and play a significant role in the story.
Of course, the influences behind Kyousougiga, Jiu Jiu, and Trese may have come from other supernatural comics and anime that have used similar tropes in the past. They may also have combined these cultural sources with their own stories to create a unique take. Regardless, it is an interesting trope to examine, and I continue to wonder about its specific origins.
If you have any ideas about the specific source(s) for this trope, I hope you will share them with me in a comment or message as I really do not know and am very interested to learn about this idea. Thank you for reading!

Titan History: Kong
Welcome once again to Monarch: After Dark, the digital gateway between you and the organisation dedicated to understanding and navigating this troubled new world we live in.
Apologies for the lack of communication in recent weeks, Monarch has been hard at work collecting data and collaborating with global governments through the most recent Titan crisis, including the disposal of deceased Titan remains and the best course of action to take with Godzilla in his new resting place.
That said, today's communication will be going over a Titan who has been surging in popularity across the globe over the past few years; the undisputed king of the Hollow Earth, Kong.
Tumblr media

Monarch Database File: Kong
Monarch Designation: Titanus Kong
Height: 337 feet
Weight: Unknown
Nature: Unknown
Behavioural Classification: Protector
-----
Until recently, Kong was believed to be the last of his kind. Born during a climactic final battle between his parents and a horde of Skullcrawlers (ravenous amphibian predators on Skull Island), Kong grew up in an isolated world filled with danger at every angle. Growing up to become the guardian deity of Skull Island, Kong was held in great reverence by the native Iwi tribe that lived on the island. His species, designated Apus giganticus, were also known protectors of the Iwi, fighting off the Skullcrawlers and other threats until their last breath.
During his centuries on the island, Kong fought a variety of creatures, from the Mire Squad and Sirenjaws to other Titans such as the mysterious Kraken or night-bringer Camazotz. However, in 2021, a storm generated by Monster Zero fused with the perpetual storm surrounding Skull Island and plunged it into chaos. Three years later, in 2024, Kong was removed from the island as the key to a daring plan to uncover a Hollow Earth energy source to stop Godzilla. The two alpha Titans clashed twice before setting aside their differences to take down Apex Cybernetics' rogue superweapon, Mechagodzilla.
Currently, Kong now resides in the Hollow Earth alongside a newly-freed tribe of his speices, an orange ape-like Titan which he seems to have adopted as a son, and the ancient ice Titan Shimo.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Monarch officials reviewing recovered footage of Kong from the doomed 1973 expedition to Skull Island, circa. 2019)
While Kong's exact origins are unknown, research conducted within the Iwi settlement appears to place his birth somewhere in the 17th Century, making him perhaps the youngest Titan on record. However, his entangled history with Monarch began much later, in 1973.
In a time where Monarch was on its last legs and facing the possibility of being shut down, founding figure William Randa and geological advisor Houston Brooks lobbied to piggyback on a Landsat expedition to Skull Island. With a military escort courtesy of the Sky Devils squadron, the team dropped seismic charges on the island to map the bedrock beneath the surface. Unknown to them at the time, their charges awakened the Skullcrawlers living in thermal vents beneath the island and incurred Kong's wrath.
Kong swiftly destroyed the Sky Devils' helicopters, leaving the survivors split into two groups. One, including Brooks, encountered the Iwi and stranded WW2 pilot Hank Marlow, where they learned about Kong and his history with the Skullcrawlers. A second, including Randa, embarked on a mission of revenge driven by Colonel Preston Packard.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Kong battling the remnants of the Sky Devil squadron after being lured into a napalm trap, circa. 1973)
After being lured into a napalm trap by Packard, Kong was initially helpless to battle the recently awakened Skull Devil, the last of the adult Skullcrawlers that had a hand in wiping out his family centuries prior. Recovering quickly, the two beasts engaged in a brutal encounter. Following some assistance from the expedition survivors, Kong triumphed by tearing out the Skull Devil's innards, avenging his parents in the process.
His next major sighting occured in 1993, but without a Monarch presence on Skull Island at the time, this is pending investigation. According to witnesses, Kong did battle with a large underwater Titan (designated 'Kraken'), after being coaxed to the island's coast by Annie, a young girl stranded on the island for years with a strange dog-like beast as a companion. After exchanging many blows, Kong ultimately killed the Titan by tearing its body in half.
In 1995, Aaron Brooks (Houston's son) led an unauthorized expedition to Skull Island, as he felt unsatisfied with leaving protection against the Skullcrawlers to Kong alone. During their stay, mythographer Walter Riccio experienced vivid visions of Kong's origins, under the influence of an Iwi medicinal drink. When Riccio destroyed the wall to the Iwi village, Kong stepped in to vanquish the Mother Longlegs swarm that seized their chance and killed Riccio before communing with Aaron and the Iwi.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Artistic rendition of Kong tearing the "Kraken" Titan in two, based off eyewitness testimony, circa. 1993)
In the following decades, Kong was largely left to his own devices as the island's guardian. Though Monarch teams briefly assisted him in 2015 with a crisis involving the unknown organisation Janos Biotech and the island's Snarehunter population, and Kong himself kept a horde of Skullcrawlers that attempted to leave the island in response to Monster Zero's 'alpha call' in 2019, no major events really transpired between 1995 and 2021.
In 2021, as mentioned previously, Skull Island was plunged into chaos when one of Monster Zero's residual storms merged with the storm system surrounding Skull Island. When darkness fell, the bat Titan Camazotz emerged and battled Kong for dominion over the island. Thanks to a daring pilot triggering a sonic boom to disorient Camazotz, Kong was able to prevail, though he was ultimately unable to save his home.
Three years later, and the artificial habitat Monarch built for Kong was unable to hold him much longer. He was reluctantly taken to the sea and transported to Antarctica's Outpost 32 (now rebuilt as a Hollow Earth station), though not without attracting Godzilla, who destroyed the naval fleet transporting him and almost drowned the ape. Following the acquisition of an axe left in the Hollow Earth by his ancestors, Kong and Godzilla clashed again in Hong Kong. While Godzilla prevailed through sheer power, Kong refused to submit to his rule.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Kong leaping onto Godzilla's back from a building after staging an ambush, circa. 2024)
After being revived by an exploding H.E.A.V, Kong jumped in to stop Mechagodzilla from executing his organic counterpart. Setting aside their differences, the two Titans teamed up to take down the mecha. A blast from Godzilla's atomic breath charged up Kong's axe, and he was able to deal the finishing blow by hacking Mechagodzilla to pieces and holding its severed head in triumph. The two Titans regarded each other one more time before parting ways.
Which brings us to the present. While much of what transpired is still being compiled to our databanks, it is known that Kong returned to the surface on three different occassions. The first was to have an infected tooth removed at a Monarch facility, the second was in Egypt to coerce Godzilla into assisting him, and the third was a two-on-two battle in Brazil between Kong and Godzilla, and Shimo and the "Skar King", evil ruler of the Kong tribe in Hollow Earth.
-----
And there you go! An up-to-date account of Kong's history in the modern world, intertwined with Monarch from the 1970's. Currently, Kong is enjoying life down in the Hollow Earth, and as the world should do, this is where we leave Kong's story be, until the world needs him again.
Until next time,
Monarch: After Dark

4K Ultra HD Review: Basket Case
Tumblr media
Unlike most "prestigious" organizations dedicated to the arts (I'm looking at you, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), the Museum of Modern Art doesn't ignore the existence of genre fare. Nevertheless, there's something surreal about seeing "This film is from the collections of The Museum of Modern Art" at the start of Basket Case, a sleazy exploitation picture shot on 16mm over the course of a year for under $35,000.
The 1982 film follows Duane Bradley (Kevin VanHentenryck), who carries around his formerly-conjoined twin brother, a deformed, fleshy menace named Belial, in a wicker basket. While Duane intends to get revenge on the medical professionals who performed their unwanted separation surgery, Belial indiscriminately kills anyone who opens the basket like a malevolent jack in the box.
Tumblr media
It's clear from the start that some sort of creature is contained within the basket, but writer-director Frank Henenlotter (Frankenhooker, Brain Damage) smartly allows the tension to build before revealing Belial in all his glory at the end of the first act. There's no mistaking it for anything but inanimate rubber (save for a primitive stop-motion sequence), but its blood-curdling screams give it life. Special effects artists Kevin Haney and John Caglione Jr. both won Oscars for Best Makeup — for Driving Miss Daisy and Dick Tracy, respectively — less than a decade removed from Basket Case.
MoMA's 4K restoration of Basket Case's original 16mm AB negative reels arrives on 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) and original uncompressed PCM mono audio via Arrow Video. Importantly, the restoration presents the film in newfound clarity while preserving the '80s NYC grime inherent to the film. The limited edition set comes with reversible artwork, a double-sided fold-out poster, and a booklet with writing on the film by horror historian Michael Gingold and a Basket Case comic strip by Martin Trafford, all housed in a slipcase featuring artwork by Sara Deck.
While no new special features were produced for the 4K, the plethora of existing materials including cover every conceivable aspect of the film. Henenlotter and VanHentenryck's breathless commentary from Arrow's 2017 Blu-ray doubles as a low-budget film school, from reusing sets to dumpster diving for decor. An archival track from Something Weird's 2001 DVD with Henenlotter, producer Edgar Ievins, actress Beverly Bonner, and Basket Case 2 production assistant Scooter McRae repeats most of the insight, but it's fun to hear their rapport.
Tumblr media
Interviews are ported over with VanHentenryck, who discusses his cerebral approach to playing the character; Bonner, who wrote and starred in a play examining where her character might be 30 years after Basket Case; Florence and Maryellen Schultz, Henenlotter's identical twin cousins who play nurses in the film and share his unique sense of humor; and legendary film critic and The Last Drive-In host Joe Bob Briggs, whose campaign to host the film's drive-in premiere saved it from being cut by its distributor.
A joke interview with Henenlotter features the filmmaker portrayed by Albert Cadabra, a sideshow performer who edited Henenlotter's Bad Biology, in the nude. The Latvian Connection explores four crucial members of the Basket Case team of Latvian descent: Ievins, associate producer/effects artist Ugis Nigals, casting director/actress Ilze Balodis, and Belial performer Kika Nigals. What’s in the Basket? is a 78-minute documentary produced by Severin Films in 2012 covering the Basket Case franchise with cast and crew.
Three short films are featured: Basket Case 3½, an 8-minute mockumentary from 2017 in which Henenlotter interviews "Duane Bradley" (VanHentenryck) about the events of Basket Case; Slash of the Knife, Henenlotter's 1976 short film that ultimately lead him to make Basket Case, with optional commentary by Henenlotter and playwright Mike Bencivenga and outtakes; and Belial’s Dream, a 2017 stop-motion animated short by Robert Morgan (who just made his feature debut with Stopmotion), accompanied by its own brief making-of featurette.
Tumblr media
Other extras include: the MoMA's 2017 restoration premiere introduction and Q&A with Henenlotter, VanHentenryck, Bonner, the Schultz twins, and Ugis Nigals; The Frisson of Fission, a video essay by film historian Travis Crawford exploring the history of conjoined twins and "freaks" in cinema; a 2011 filming location tour with Henenlotter and rapper R.A. The Rugged Man (who co-wrote Bad Biology) explore the filming locations; outtakes; five image galleries (promotional stills, behind the scenes, ephemera, advertisements, home video releases); three trailers; a TV spot; and two radio spots.
Henenlotter didn't set out to make a cult film — in fact, he didn't think anyone would ever see his feature debut — but that's what he accomplished with Basket Case. Shot on location in New York City, the picture doubles as a time capsule of a seedy version of Times Square that no longer exists; one littered with drug dealers, sex workers, and porno theaters. While the sequels would lean more into the comedy, the original film balanced its camp with well-placed shocks.
Basket Case will be released on 4K Ultra HD on April 30 via Arrow Video.

January Recap
Little mini review of the horror movies I watched in January 2025, slower month but that's okay!
Nosferatu
Tumblr media
Definitely started off the year in the best possible way with this one, absolutely fantastic in every way with great casting, performances, set design, costuming, dialogue, vibes, literally EVERYTHING. I don't think I can say what others haven't said already, but truly a standout film and a sign that remakes can be good without taking away from the original.
2. Alien: Romulus
Tumblr media
The Alien franchise has definitely had a lot of misses over the years, but this felt like a really good return to form. Andy was a great and nuanced character, and the push and pull of androids and humans was really great in the midst of the Xenomorph threat. Also, the last 10 minutes has one of the creepiest creatures I've seen in a minute.
3. Oddity
Tumblr media
I wanted a lot more from this than I got, but there were a few legitimately great jump scares (which I usually dislike). There were some good designs, but ultimately the plot fell a bit flat and felt more predictable than I think was intended.
4. Azrael
Tumblr media
Unlike one of my surprise favorites from last year, No One Will Save You, the lack of dialogue in this movie served no real purpose and instead made things needlessly confusing. Samara did a great job, and there's a fun ending scene, so not all a waste.
5. Grafted
Tumblr media
Another example of wanting more, I was hoping this would be a ringing "good for her" body horror revenge movie, and while it certainly had a lot of these elements it didn't quite go as far as I wanted it to. Some good gross body horror and fun mean girls, and the classic white male professor antagonist always hits.

Part 1 of analyzing every total drama character.
hi ho! i’m going to do this in elimination order for each season/character. So obviously part 1 has gotta be Ezekiel. I have very much Opinions ™️  on him.
Before we begin i would like to say that i am in no way a professional in anything I’m doing, this is just for fun and to get a better grip on characters from my favourite show.
Zeke from the get go is an absolute loser. He’s homeschooled and doesn’t understand many social cues/norms. He’s dirty and mostly antisocial. Even Chris tells him not to say much and to try not to be first off the island.
Overall review of his time on the show:
I think the biggest part that he does in island is that he says a very sexist remark, claiming that men are better than women. He quickly learns his lesson, then eliminated because of it. During the special, TDDDDI, Zeke teams up with Lindsay and Beth, with the only terms of “treating them with respect”. I feel this heavily implies that during the time at Playa Des Loser, Zeke is trying to actively better himself from his old views on gender, as he happily accepts the two girls’ terms of teaming up. He also tries helping them during this time, pointing out the case that is tied to the tree. Although he is quickly silenced and ignored by the two girls chatter. Which costed them to be the first to the prize.
Ultimately, Zeke is not in Action and doesn't do much for the aftermaths either, but during his time in Playa Des Losers, he takes on a gangster-esque persona in an attempt to be seen as cool. It does not work well, as he is never seen as cool. I have nothing much to say with Action, so lets just move along.
World Tour is where things get very interesting for him. He dropped the gangster persona and became super determined to win, claiming he’s been training. Unfortunately, he is eliminated first again, twice. His determination drives him to stay on the jet, hanging onto the wings and landing gear of it in order to live in the cargo hold. This is where he begins to lose his humanity. He begins to act more like the rodents that live in the plane, and even begins to turn a sick green colour and lose his hair and also his hat. I dont know how he lost his hat, i think he should have kept it. Chris tries to take advantage of his determination to win and hires a still vaguely human Zeke to play the ripper. After that, he finally goes full feral. He’s a full on animal by now and Chris once again uses that to his advantage in the Serengeti episode, when he is used to be hunted for sport. In the finale, Zeke’s determination makes him attack Chris or Heather depending on the version for the million where he is thrown into the volcano but quickly launched back out.
During Revenge of the Island, Zeke lives in the mines with a bunch of mutated creatures, acting as their king. During A Mine is a Terrible Thing to Waste, Zeke finds Anne Maria and begins giving her a bunch of treats in order to impress her. He gives her the burnt prize money and a diamond he doesn't know is fake. I find this glimpse of Zeke still being human to be a nice breath of fresh air for him, which is gone soon after as he tries to attack Lightning on sight. During the finale of Revenge of the Island he also tries to protect Anne Maria from the weird squirrel in hopes of getting a kiss from her.
In All Stars, he is originally brought back as a joke to scare the contestants before being launched away again. During this season, Zeke has enough of Chris using him as a punching bag and kidnaps him, holding him above a vat of toxic waste using only a thin rope that rats are eating away at. While he is hanging, Chris actively taunts Zeke, causing him to go into a fit of rage. Though the contestants save Chris and defeat Zeke before Chris falls into the vat. Lucky for him, Zeke gets a happy-ish ending where he is accepted by the rest of the mutants on the island.
My personal thoughts/headcanons about him:
I have reason to suspect Zeke has some form of neurodivergency that probably went undiagnosed due to his parents being of a much more “traditional” mindset and refusing to give him mental help.
Equally so, i have every right to suspect that Zeke’s parents are neglectful. Did they never do anything legally to the producers or Chris for making him into a wretched beast. Did they never think to sue the show? The show’s situation caused him to never be normal again.
I also think that Zeke orignally was trying to act like his father in Island, i dont know the exact reason but maybe within the farmer community they live in his father was considered cool? i’m unsure but i think thats why he tried to act like him. Once that failed he would try to act like a gangster because maybe he saw they were perceived as cool.
Zeke just wants to be seen as cool by people, i think its sad he never got that, I mean he was sexist so ig thats why.
also please note that Duncan has said far more sexist things than Ezekiel ever has
Overall, Ezekiel is an amusing character that i find super interesting. Albeit he’s more interesting in a feral form but that doesn’t make his human form not interesting. I wouldn’t say he’s quite top 10 favourite character, but i do enjoy him.

I came across this interesting book, “Day in the Life of a Hunter”, and yes, it’s a Supernatural fanfic that you can buy right from Amazon. I am really tempted to.
The reason I’m showing y’all is the review that was left:
Great read.
Are you a fan of the popular tv series supernatural? Well, if you are then delve into the world of hunters who have seen and hunted all kinds of supernatural creatures. "A Day in the life of a hunter" is a phenomenal story about hunting demons, revenge and finding unexpected twists and turns on the way.
We follow an ex- police officer Julie Chan. She is a twenty- four years old whose partner in force was killed in an unusual way. Becoming a hunter, she vows to kill the creature who did this.
In this quest of hers, she also saves people from demon possession, paranormal and supernatural attacks and more. After two years, she meets the Winchester brothers while hunting down a ghost in Portland. As the sparks fly with Sam, she couldn't stop herself from falling head over heels in love with him.
But theirs is a story filled with dangers and uncertainties. Follow along as this collection takes you on a rollercoaster ride of memorable moments.
Anyone who has watched supernatural can easily fall for the Winchester boys for their charms and raw and honest emotions. And the author has maintained that profound level. Being a huge fan of the tv series, i felt an immense connection to the story. Sam and Dean Winchester are still my comfort characters and this book has definitely done justice to them.
The author's creative writing style is engaging and as this collection contains 13 books it becomes quite exciting to see how the story evolves and expands into an intriguing plotline. As a reader, you will be introduced to different characters with a significant situation which will take you further into the world of the supernatural.
Highly recommend it to the fans who like to read dark fantasy drama genre books.
It sounds really tempting to buy. I’ve never bought fanfiction. I’ve gotten it from Patreon and similar sources, so I guess I have.
What do y’all think?
