this post is fearmongering. the results of this study are concerning and should definitely be a matter of public discussion, but this is certainly not the conclusion the researchers came to.

the point of the study was to assess the risks of exposure to toxic metals- something one of the co-authors notes are “ubiquitous” fwiw- via menstrual products. Their research confirmed that these metals are indeed present in tampons, but no further conclusions are drawn. it is possible the metal entered into the cotton from the soil, which is a well-known phenomenon; cotton is so good at lifting heavy metals that it has actually been suggested as a part of the solution for revitalizing polluted ground.

the authors conclude with an acknowledgement that the study should be repeated- their sample size was 60 tampons- and a suggestion that further testing ought to be done to indicate whether or not these metals can even leech out of the tampon in the first place, let alone whether or not such leeching could occur at levels deleterious to human health.

there is, in fact, a body of research- too small, for sure, but much larger than this single study- indicating that long-term proper tampon use has no observable negative impact on health. i am grateful and thrilled that more research is being done and i hope that this study is the first of many on this line of questioning, but i am really frustrated at this post and the response it got.

obviously, if this study alters your approach to menstrual health, more power to you. consumers should be informed-risk-takers, and menstrual health is double-obviously a very personal choice. but it definitely wasn't the researchers concluding that you ought to “avoid using tampons at all cost," only this tumblr user did. the lead author of the paper, in fact, specifically says that she hopes people do NOT panic about the results.

(the notes of the post were disappointing. people affirming that they knew they were right to be suspicious of tampons all along, or even recommending alternatives that actually have very little to no research regarding the safety of long-term use, etc. it’s a different conversation, but categorical distrust of tampons is old-school misogyny. you certainly shouldn't wear them if you don’t want to, but there is nothing inherently scary or wrong about them, and people who prefer them are not being reckless or crass.)

you’re crying alone — but no one cares.

the magpie’s paired so lovely alongside the strum of her harp’s chords. it had become routine now for many years that sumi would wake to play alongside the wildlife, quietly && peacefully in her personal courtyard. skies were threatening a crew of chaos above on this early morning, just shy from five am, but that wouldn’t stop sumi from her unspoken promise to the fragile ones that came to sing their song with her. she strummed slow at first, joints gathering their rhythm, still finding the harp’s proper placement. nestled in tight like a child did it lay on her shoulder, her cheek caressing the cool wood as her body began to play more confidently && proudly. the faster her strums, the quieter the magpie’s had become && there were lulls of silence between them both, giving room to breathe && let the birds enjoy their part in their duet. morning’s like these were one of the many reasons sumi felt ever so slightly comfortable in her own skin, that her thought of ruin were simply natural — as much as the storm clouds above her were.

a crack of lightning interrupts their melody – the magpie’s beginning to croak in fear before fierce rustles in the tree’s they nestled in began to pound against the air. fleeting were their voices, leaving sumi where she was most comfortable — – alone.

with the lack of an audience she carried on, the thunder masking the sound of her harp as she became far more invested in the tune she was playing. focused on the instrument in her hands, the tears that rolled down her cheeks held no meaning ;; it hard her curious, but she didn’t care to break her song && brush it all away. another snap in the air vibrated through the air && rain began to patter against the cobblestone that surrounded her, her music intertwining with nature’s sound. a memory flashed through her like the strike of lightning, causing a sudden pause to her play. red whipped before her eyes, the tree’s and stone stained in blood with several unmoving bodies scattered about as if they were petals of a flower on a windy day. her breath escapes her && she falters just for a split second, her harp catching an imbalance as she once again finds her reigns. eyes closing tight with lips pursed together in a tight line, she convinced herself that what surrounded her was nothing but a lost memory && a figment of her imagination ; they wouldn’t hurt her any longer. lashes raise && the world around her doesn’t seem so terrifying any longer. the cobblestone is soaked in nothing other than rain, the bodies replaced with a litter of tiger lily’s swaying && fighting back against the pressure of the rain. raising her hands she set her mind on finishing her song, but before she could even strum the first chord an unsatisfactory interruption came clicking with boot heels towards her. “ lady sumi, let’s get you out of those wet clothes && the rain. ” it was insu, her most trusted && loyal bodyguard — her pet. “ what are you even doing out here, alone ? come on. ” the tears were still there, blending with the cries from the heavens as she strummed her last chord. smiling now, she turned her head towards insu before raising to her feet, holding the harp securely to her side. && in a playful tone, she responded, acting as if she wasn’t being badly battered by the weight of the rain. “ taking a morning shower … what else ? ”

it’s a multi-vortex tornado. i dont remember the tribe it originates from (i think it was cherokee), but there’s a native american legend…? saying? that goes “if you see a man in a tornado, you are about to die.”

it did so much damage to the town it caused the scale that tornados are measured by, the fijita scale, undergo revisions, and it made anchoring buildings in the tornado alley region pretty much mandatory. (it took the entire town off the map. only those who had taken shelter outside of the town or in underground bunkers survived.)
