Mentioned that I'm a fan (albeit a quiet one) of transfem Mike(s) Walters on another post and got this in response

so my trans woman Mike Walters thoughts:

1. In my experience, friend groups with one trans person very rarely have only one person.

Anne and Mike became friends in college when Anne had just started transitioning (ep 69).

Even though they were in the same dorm room in freshman year, there's a reason why people gravitate towards one another. (My freshman year roommate and I will never speak to one another again. Just being roommates doesn't make you friends.)

If you're trans and you see another trans person in a new place where you don't know anyone, you go talk to the other trans person.

In my mind, mike had already transitioned - possibly years ago. There's no friendship quite like that between the seasoned and newly transitioned trans friends. I've been on both sides of this. One of my transmasc friends looked at my very unshaven legs in 11th grade the first time the weather allowed for shorts (something I was explicitly bullied for and therefore mildly insecure about), said it gave him gender envy, and I will be chasing that high for the rest of my life.

I want this for mike and anne, bringing one another up when they're nervous/insecure/unsure about some part of their transition.

2. Middle aged identity crisis

Following Edgar's death, the grief turned michael into a cowboy (ep 114). Grief looks different for everyone but it often involves some kind of massive life change. Michael was also around 40 when this happened: the perfect age for a mid-life crisis and another cause for huge life changes.

She's not gonna change her gender again, it took long enough to become who she is. But edgar liked cow[girl]s and so she'll become a cowgirl, as a way of keeping edgar with her and making a change of her own control that feels big enough to counter the lack of control from edgar's premature death (babe) (ep 84).

She transitioned once, doing it a second time (into a cowgirl) is a walk in the park.

(Also open to the idea that this is when the mikes realize they're women - edgar's death acts as a catalyst and michael goes from, well, the Mike that we know and love and into the Cowgirl Michael that I know and love in my head. Sometimes it's easier to transition if you go big or go home, and Michael can't go home anymore now that edgar's passed. This also tracks with michael being so nonchalant about breaking the rules and doing whatever she wants - transitioning can be one hell of a confidence boost)

3. Fun little things to think about (under the cut in the interest of post length)

Mike and Michael moving in to the riga apartment together was the first time two mikes were living with one another for extended periods. This sounds like the trans dream to me. You have a second version of you that you can bounce ideas off of and ask about outfits and try hairstyles on and see how the world perceives you. The mikes absolutely do not seem the type to be put together enough to do makeup or preen over appearance but this is my headcanon, goddammit. anyways

Michael donating the clothes she no longer wears (on account of becoming a cowgirl) to Mike, who now has a massive collection of vaguely in and out of style clothing to choose from and has no idea what to do with - mike says in 82 that he comes home from a thrift shop with 2 shirts that make him look like a slob and that he only wears on laundry day. I'd love to think that Michael threw herself into figuring out how to layer that shirt or what belt matches which skirt and now has a plethora of knowledge about how to dress yourself specifically tailored to the body type of the mikes. What I'm getting at is michael as a sort of queer eye esque* stylist for mike. *note: all of my knowledge of this show comes from tumblr

MW has polished nails and you cannot convince me otherwise. This isn't even necessarily trans, I will choose to believe it canon until explicitly stated otherwise. But I adore the idea that MW got really into fancy nails as a hobby she picked up while living out her best life in OVER with edgar, and after she went from being many mikeys to one MW she didn't stop. The other mikes are wary at first but it really grows on them (or, better, they really really like it but are too nervous to request anything from this new mike) until of them sits down with MW as she's trying out a new design in her room and asks if MW can do hers as well. Which becomes a big important "breaking this new iteration out of her shell and getting her to put down her walls" weekly activity in riga activity.

Now I'm thinking about mdawg and mw doing their nails together because you know they would the minute they could spend a free day together

!! What if (the) OverMike(s) start transitioning at OVER because overmike and ovedgar finally have the time to live and being relatively stress free for the first time in so long with Good Influence Edgar gives mike the space to do some real introspection and realize that she does really like being in charge of her own life and she does think a little bit of eyeliner looks nice and the weight she put on when she started working at over the first time made her chest grow a little and hey, she really likes how that looks and it's not a crime to want more of it. It's an extra slap in the face when base grows more and more distant because how could you not notice that overmike was becoming a girl while you weren't looking? If one mike had that realization, what does that mean for the other mikes?

Its 3am and I've been thinking about this for over an hour. More thoughts tomorrow if anyone wants to hear them <3

WOE.BEGONE Iterationship Fic Recs

A while back I promised to throw together a rec list of my favorite iterationship fics so I am finally getting around to it!

There are so many good ones that I return to again and again. So let’s do this! There are some SPOILERS below up through the recent season so if you are not caught up proceed at your own risk.

I must begin with @solipsistful’s this heart of mine. For me it was the fic that launched a thousand (or, more accurately, 114+) fics. It centers on Mike and Michael in an established relationship? affair? something. Definitely something. And it deals with the fallout of being discovered. Needless to say if you read and enjoy my ongoing Mike/Michael series Love in the Time of Iterations and Retrocausal Pockets, you have ace from the solipsistful collective to thank. I also recommend Don't make this weird and Some Poor Decisions by them as well.

The first annual Mike4Mike month was February of 2024 and it was, unsurprisingly, a boon for iterationship fics. When I read @felixcosm's it’s like you wanna get caught, I was positively delighted. It centers on a very bored Mikey having to sit through a meeting at Base while a bored (and horny) OverMike sits at home in Mikey's cabin. OverMike decides to entertain them both by texting Mikey and things get, uh, let's just say heated.

Do yourself a favor and drop whatever you are doing and read Reflecting by @orchidbreezefc. The writing is lush and leaves you holding your breath. Set during season 5, it's a brilliant getting together fic that captures the self doubt and deep longing of Mike and Michael. If you enjoy that then go read Nostalgia, also written by @orchidbreezefc, to have your heart ripped out. It's set during 107 and I will leave it at that.

If chaptered fics are your thing I highly suggest @felixcosm's what it means to claim my body. In this fic Mike is taken by the compound and then eventually returned to Sat Base. I don't want to spoil too much but Felix does such a great job of exploring the guilt and self loathing Mike feels after being held by and experimented on by Ty Betteridge and the guilt everyone around him feels for not realizing he'd been taken.

@muppet-chaos gave us a DELIGHTFUL fic called Schemes and Consequences in which Edgar makes an offhand comment that implies that Michael is the hottest Mike Walters iteration. This of course sets Mikey out to prove Edgar wrong by trying to seduce Michael himself. It's equal parts hilarious and hot.

If you haven't dipped your toes into WOE.BEGONE's tag on ao3 yet then you don't realize that probablynotsafeforwork is an expert at writing smut of all varieties. Tender? ✅ Silly? ✅ Angsty? ✅ Romanitc? ✅ Raunchy? ✅ They do it all. Getting Heated is an Omegaverse fic in which Mike discovers that he's suddenly switched from Alpha to Omega and it is positively scrumptious. Omegaverse not your thing? Don't you worry, probablynotsafeforwork's got you with fics like I Will Carry You Home in which Michael carries Mike home four different times only for Mike to be the one to eventually carry Michael home. It's sweet and sexy and I return it again and again.

This next fic was written to me as a birthday present so MAYBE I am biased but I don't care. you haven’t relinquished as much as you want me to believe is sweet and tender and sexy. In this one @felixcosm writes Mike and Michael enjoying a rare moment when it's just the two of them at Sat Base and Mike wants to make the night last.

@muppet-chaos broke my heart with The Best You've Ever Had (Is Just A Memory) in which Mike is called upon to help Mikey figure out who the Michael iteration is that's in compound storage. This fic is set after the fallout of the Showdown at the Shadow Dome. The story bounces between the present and a happy memory Mike has of Michael. This one's for the angst lovers.

@falloutcoys made me a Mike/Mikey believer with almost like you never left. Set during episode 135, Mike and Mikey have reunited to solve Michael's ARG but they take a moment to catch up first. It's hot and sweet and does a wonderful job of capturing the character voices.

@falloutcoys also gave us the utterly perfect Close Quarters. I'll go light on details so that I don't spoil the reveal but this fic is set during the period in which Mikey is crashing at Sat Base and Mike and Michael are trying to keep their relationship under wraps. But they also simply cannot keep their hands off one another. Hijinks ensue.

One of the few iterationship fics that isn't about iterations of Mikes Walters is In Case of Emergency. This one focuses on Base Chris and Chris who is not from Base (not to be confused with CANNONBALL). It's a delicious and playful sexting fic in which Base Chris gets a text out of the blue from his iteration.

A lot of people clocked the chemistry between XL and 47 right from the moment they were introduced. When Mike tried to do some recon and stood in for XL, a lot of NSFW ideas started getting tossed around and @solipsistful, genius that they are, gave us fucking around and finding out in which Mike attempts to impersonate XL and realizes he might be in over his head.

You want something silly and adorable and less spicy? @ty-bayonet-betteridge has got you covered with A lover is someone to be silly with. Set during the period of time where Base is stuck in the Dome and most of the Mikes Walters (that we knew about at the time anyway) were staying with Tex, MW and MDawg do their best to irritate Mikey by pretending to be in a relationship. Looking for spice? Don't worry they've got you covered there with Proud of Yourself in which Mikey 🌶️ rewards his past self 🌶️ for helping him outsmart Ryan after delivering Ryan the files from inside Tier 2 during episode 31.
