from what i understand of the narrator's character, he is motivated by fear

namely, his two most prominent fears are a) not being in control, and b) not being acknowledged as real

that's why he created and published the story, so he could be acknowledged as a storyteller even when he's bad at it, to feel real and be in control of something for once

and this is why the skip button ending is so sad, because it emulates both of these fears for him in multiple ways

he wants to be in control of the response to his game, and he wants it to be positive so people will keep playing, keep acknowledging him as a storyteller and acknowledging him as real he's not in control of how long the skips are, and when the skip button is pressed, he's all by himself and nobody is there to acknowledge him or listen to him

no wonder he went insane

and a big point of the game is that you're meant to let it go. you're meant to take away the narrator's control by turning off the game, to leave him alone and not give him the acknowledgement he's afraid of being without. you are meant to make him face his fears.

his name is literally 'the narrator'. without anyone there to listen to him, who is he?
