i think the main difference in personality so far between puppy-stellina and puppy-kepler is that kep has a lot more patience.

that brings a lot of positive qualities: he has better emotional control and is less prone to tantrums and outbursts than stellina was (i.e. if i have to stop for 10 seconds on a walk to pick up poo, stellina would yelp and pull and cry at being asked to stop). it also means he has better focus and is more forgiving of repetition in training - he doesn't give up nearly as easily when frustrated. and things that may startle or scare him he's more willing to try again or overcome (e.g. he slipped on my stairs and hurt his foot and didn't want to go back up the stairs for a few days, but eventually started trying again. and when butters slaps him he yelps and backs off, but still thinks she's Super Fun and tries to make friends). so he's a bit more methodical in his thinking.

but it does also bring some negatives too: because he has patience, he does not give up once he's decided something. if stellina was overtired and i put her in a crate, she'd fuss for a minute then pretty quickly go "hm alright then" and go to sleep. if i do the same to kep, he fights it and fights it because he doesn't want to be asleep and that's that. he's much more difficult to redirect or distract, and i have to be a lot more mindful of managing him because once he's decided something is fun or tasty or whatever it takes a lot to dissuade him, and he'll go back to it at the first chance. he's very slow to learn boundaries as a result - i have to do a lot more convincing than i'm used to.

they are still overall very similar personalities, especially as they're the same breed and from very similar lines, but i think so far this has been the biggest quality that i've needed to adjust to. puppy-stellina i had to do a lot of mental adjustments learning how to manage her short emotional threshold and sensitivity, so it's interesting to see what does and doesn't translate over to kep.

In case you were wondering what we are doing this evening: going through treats like it's nobody's business. These are the treats we currently have available. I want to get more of the Vital Essentials stuff because that's just freezedried meats.

I was planning on just seeing what we had left, but Hek wanted to Do Stuff. First, it started out as heel work. I just weaved in and out of all the bones scattered through the house, turning around randomly, going backwards, sideways.

We've been working on our in-between the legs heel (if anyone knows what it's called, please let me know), so we did that next. We are up to about 10 steps forward and about 5 back.

Treat tosses were meant to end the session but we grew on that too. We started with sitting just a foot away and tossing treats. This evolved into position changes with 3 foot gap. It ended with me being about 20 feet away doing distance position changes.

This was our longest streak. Hek is not the greatest at the whole eye mouth coordination thing, so I am VERY proud of my magickal fruit

How do I tell a friend that I think her use of punishment with her dog is worsening the problem she’s trying to solve with punishment.

I really like her but her young Doberman is very vocal…like opera singing yelling vocal when he’s experiencing feelings and it’s very clear that her correcting him with a prong is not quieting him down.

She really has it in her head that because he’s a Doberman he needs a “firmer hand” and correction in order to be trained properly, and it seems like the people she meets within the breed and at dog shows are really pushing that mindset on her as well.

Idk it just makes me kind of uncomfortable when we’re out together with our dogs and she’s correcting him frequently for behaviors that are very rooted in emotion.

I also have yet to actually tell her that I’m completely positive reinforcement/LIMA based in my training bc I worry that she will look down on me for it (I’m pretty sure that’s my anxiety and comes from talking to people like my dad about it though)

I was so done with that guy yesterday, he kept trying to pet Yoshi (this was a gathering at our home) and she kept lip licking, walking away, airplane ears, whale eyeing like every possible “I’m uncomfortable” body language cue in the world and he just kept going at her. I just bluntly went “so you just ignore every single sign that she doesn’t want you touching her, huh?” (After about five other instances of going “hey she’s not interested in being pet right now”)

“Uh yeah XP they’ll HAVE to love me loool “

“Yeah that’s not how basic respect works” *cues Yoshi to my other side nestled between me and the arm of the couch*

*medication alarm goes off, Yoshi heads for it*

*dude starts touching her and getting in her face*

“She’s in the middle of working Stop touching her.”

*verbal cue for Yoshi to get meds, she deeks out and runs back with my meds*

the “mats” in question was a single loose tuft of undercoat. I brushed him that morning.

Idk some malinois owners are so obsessed with their dogs it almost seems like a cult. They go on about the hours they put in and the drive their dogs have and it feels like they’re seeking purpose for themselves rather than what’s actually beneficial for their dogs? If Mals are so high maintenance how could ordinary people own them?

If a malinois is owned by a regular person the cult-like folk will go on and on about how those people must not have intense dogs or that their (the cult-like people's) dogs are soooo much more crazy and work worthy than the people with them as active companions lol.

Really the way they talk about these dogs is no different than the people that worship corporate work grind. Like the type of language is the same and everything.
