listen i'll be real no matter what im gonna be out here gushing abt trent crimm cause he's my special little guy and im obsessed with him, but considering the Literal Paragraphs ive been writing abt all the shit i LIKED about the show, i didn't know how else to process these Less Good emotions than by blurting it all out over like two hours (instead of doing the dishes, lmao).

tldr; s3e2 was such an emotional high point for me, since i really felt like it had something concrete + specific to say about physical violence + social/emotional violence, and how they're BOTH highly valued as masculine ideals. but the episodes since then...

it kind of feels like im watching the result of a long and bloody fight between different writers? writers who, apparently, wanted Very different things from this last season, so now we're getting this. bizarro world mish-mash of two hypothetical shows, where tone + content + themes vary WILDLY and inconsistently from episode to episode - and even scene to scene!

specifically, i feel really disappointed and hurt that they went that direction with shandy's arc. i understand that we're only half way through the season, and obviously anything could happen between now and then but... really? like, is there some kind of budgeting issue here? we can't afford for there to be more than three (complex, not sexy lamps) women in any given episode? is that why the second jack appears, barbara loses any depth (what happened to that lovely moment of connection with the snow globes????????), and THEN the second SHANDY goes off her head it's. jack time? apparently???? like. this would feel a lot better as a viewer if at this point the show hadn't PRIMED me for jack doing something insanely stupid + cruel for no reason except 'haha Keeley Bad At Her Job'.

like. the first thing we see of shandy fine is her pride in keeley, and genuine appreciation of her hard work and skill. she's CLEARLY not stupid, otherwise why would the rest of her introductory scene be her helping keeley out with filmmaking advice (the extras thing) AND random, life experience shit (knowing how to deal with goat shit)?? she knows her way around a set, and she doesn't make any of the footballers feel judged, even when she's clearly thrown by the clips they're providing her.

so why in the space of like, barely a few weeks, does ALL of that get thrown out the window? 'condoms for balls'??? why are we supposed to just take for granted that she's stupid + overly ambitious (other than the Fucking Obvious!) when the show put NO effort into actually setting that up???? like, if her first scene was her monstrously fucking UP the shoot for keeley, and keeley hired her on pure sympathy then like. sure. whatever. no room for bleeding hearts in business. but that ALSO sucks as a story line for ted lasso, a show that (according to its OWN press releases!) is supposed to be about kindness and human connection and breaking cycles!

it just. it hurts? in a way where its like, i don't believe even a little bit that this was what the writers were aiming for with those scenes, and it frightens me that there could be such a wide gulf between intent and result. especially when bonding about The Shandy Incident is what got keeley and jack together (which i am trying... So hard to feel positive about, because explicitly confirming keeley's bisexuality is amazing, least of all bc it makes her jokes with rebecca feel a lot less mean-spirited on the writers' parts, retroactively)... like how am i supposed to be enjoying their moments together when i feel like the show's whole premise has been betrayed???

and really? the one moment nate gets to feel good in this WHOLE season, it's bc the server at the restaurant who previously could not care if he dropped dead right in front of him showed him some affection + validation?????

like, sure, i GUESS im happy that this random excuse for an arc has lead to a slightly more sympathetic female character existing at least in the PERIPHERY of the show's main storyline, except no im fucking not? i don't care about this fucking restaurant, and even though ive been DESPERATELY trying not to hate jade (even though the writers themselves can't seem to decide if she's Literally Racist or just a depressed service worker) NATE shouldn't care about jade! the ONLY way i can see this being an actually interesting arc for nathan is if its another exploration of his inability to leave behind the things + people that have hurt him, combined with years of conditioning where he's never allowed to express being annoyed/upset at anyone (which richmond!!! contributed to!!!!!! 'if you're mad, count to ten. if that doesn't work, count again'??? cool speedrun tips for resentment ted!). like, an arc where we see that distance away from richmond hasn't helped nate as much as it's removed some of the worst triggers, so a taste of athens ends up in the same awful pit of resentment + loathing as ted did. which nate clearly hates! he doesn't LIKE being that person! he apologised to a PAINTED DOLL of ted!!!! but when he doesn't have the framework or tools or SUPPORT to do anything else...

like. where is his team? obviously im not expecting the show to start being about a bunch of football players that AREN'T from richmond but? even just a small moment of appreciation? or hell! maybe they hate him! if we could see LITERALLY ANYTHING abt the sport which nathan has dedicated his life to, and how his Actual Coaching style is positively or negatively impacted by the lessons he learned at richmond? this is a show ABOUT football!!!!!

i just. a taste of athens? again? a-fucking-gain?????

and honestly, the worst part is that i REALLY liked the little monologue that nate got to give about how important the restaurant was to him! as much as it showed that nate is still just as passionate + earnestly defensive of the things he loves, it ALSO shows that he 1. spends that energy explaining his passion to people who don't deserve it/won't care, and 2. gets attached to things that really fucking hurt him! and like. i am on my hands and KNEES for that to be the 'point' of this arc but at this point i feel like that's me being naive! but if fucking JADE from fucking ATHENS is the civilising white gf who FINALLY talks nate down from him ~ ignorant, vengeful crusade ~ against the absolute ~ matyrs ~ of goodness at afc richmond, i just. like. what are we even DOING here gang?

i don't know. it hurts that sam's gone from being an almost principal character in s2 to only getting passing lines in s3. it hurts that rebecca's off in her own world, talking to strangers, having life-changing revelations on her own, surrounded by sets we're never going to see again, where every scene she DOES get to spend w one of the richmond members feels hasty and rushed, like the episode wants to get a few characters obligatory appearances out of the way asap. it hurts that all the chekov's guns around zava's arc (jamie's resentment, ted's lack of guidance, dani being 'demoted' + colin being benched) were apparently all just blanks, to be hastily plastered over with one big long speech about... ted wanting everyone to have higher self esteem, or something?

and listen, more the fool me if another episode comes out next week that i completely adore, and i spend like five days singing its praises. im mostly writing this so i can go INTO the next ep without feeling resentful + upset! i'll be STOKED if i was wrong and all of those little details ARE actually important, and these arcs have more to them than this! but for now im just sad and annoyed :(

ok so i really like the concept of the whole Bill of Life thing, unwinding especially.

like holy smokes was it good.

OK SO IK ITS NOT THE MOST POPULAR NOVEL I DONT THINK SO FOR MY MOOTS WHO R SEEING THIS THIS IS THE GENERAL CONCEPT: since abortions r banned pretty much, ppl either “stork” unwanted children or “unwind” children when they became unwanted. like the story starts off abt three unwinds, being unwound for completely different reasons. Connor was like, a troublesome kid and his parents just didn’t want that so they signed the orders to get him unwound. i missed why Risa was unwound but im pretty sure the state house just didn’t have much room for her anymore(she got storked there i think. she really didn’t grab my attention at the beginning sadly). Lev came from a Christian family, and churches make everyone sacrifice one of their children for God by unwinding them second they turn 13, Lev being one of them(it’s considered an honor)

OK SO the concept of storking is that, the mother delivers a child, doesn’t want it, leaves it at some person’s doorstep and then it’s “finders keepers.” however if they are caught they have to take the kid back and legally obliged to keep it. same with the finders keepers situation, got storked and ain’t no one at ur doorstep? legally obliged to keep it like it or not. however Connor’s parents once got storked and passed it into the neighbors house, and the baby rotated for a week and back to their house, but already sick and dying. Connor then gets traumatized and further on in the book he’s so overridden with the memory that when a bitch got storked she yell at them (Connor abd Risa) to take it back even tho the kid wasn’t theirs.

the concept of unwinding is that legally between 13-18 your guardians can send you to a harvest camp where you’re taken apart and given these parts to those who need it. like for example: you got unwound, taken to a harvest camp, they take your hands and give it to a guy who lost his across the fucking continent. ppl literally stopped trying to cure things, just replaced faulty organs with healthy ones. and no one really knows what’s going on in those harvest camps. do they kill you off immediately or do they wait and wait for weeks on weeks to get to you while you never know when’s your last day.

SO ANYWAY

I really like Connor’s relationship with Hayden, and tbh if they would make them canonically in love i’d be the happiest person on this planet. but again that would cause even further complications w the plot so i get it ig. but at the same time i don’t. Connor never really struck me as a cishet dude even from the beginning of the story, and though him abd Risa r a very good pair i’d just kinda like it more if they paired him up with Hayden. cuz first of all it would add on to tge reason he got unwound in the first place. abd like, i want a gay protagonist in a horror book is that really too much to ask?

same thing with Lev and CyTy, tho i see them more as moirails. yk, homestuck. heheh. no bc they’re so caring for eachother it’s crazy. but again i don’t see them in a romantic relationship, i just rlly like their dynamic. live laugh love how Lev was willing to go through with CyTy’s shit and vice versa.

Hayden and CyTy gotta b my fab characters frfr. anyway so CyTy’s name is actually Cyrus, but he has an eighth of a brain of a kid who got unwound and his name was Tyler. so like, he sometimes does things that Tyler would do but himself won’t, leading them to Tyler’s parents’ house and it actually made me tear up.

There's kind of. A lot to get into, but I'll try to keep it short - I kinda need to get into some base setting lore, because Abel is extremely connected to the main themes of the story. So, there's this town, Uncan, and it was created by a God out of its own body - the God is referred to by many names, Yellow God being one of them (YG after that point). YG has no concept of healthy human interaction due to 1) not experiencing emotions and attachments the way humans do 2) having no concept of death. At the same time YG has a severely unhealthy attachment to its own world at the state that its in right now. The issue is that the world is on its Last Leg Right Fucking Now, and it keeps dying, and YG keeps rolling it back to keep the world going. Which results in a timeloop. Of course.

Abel isn't originally from Uncan - he's actually a journalist that went on an exploration mission, proceeded to ignore every possible sign warning him to stay away from the town, and got stuck there, because YG doesn't let anyone out of Uncan. Like, once is someone in there, they're never leaving this place. This is already pretty bad - however it, of course, gets worse for him! Because YG gets extremely fixated on him. This just happens to them sometimes, they currently have three specialest little guys (including Abel) that are getting special treatment, and this special treatment can be both a good and a bad thing regardless of YG's actual intent (doesn't have a good understanding of consequences and human mental health and anything to be completely honest).

Abel is their newest favorite toy to play around with. Which leads to Abel getting put through the wringer in horrible ways almost every loop, usually in the background of the main story, because he's more of a personalization of the main concept than the actual main character.

Abel thinks himself to be smarter than everyone, and hates YG very very much, and is sure he will escape one day (spoiler! he won't). This makes YG even more focused on him, and the cycle repeats endlessly.

Funniest part is that YG doesn't even really understand that they're fucking with him per say. They are enjoying fucking with him but they are not fully aware that the fucking is occurring. Unlike the only other person Abel can relate to on even grounds, who acts like what's happening is just normal (due to giving up and such). sorry i got rlly excited jkosdfjoq muy text. yeag

I was scrolling through a mha tag looking for fanart of one of the villains and i saw someone like talking about their opinions on each of the different characters and YKNOW ITS FINE TO HAVE DIFFERENT TAKES THATS OKAY I GET IF SOMEONE HATES/DISLIKES MY FAVORITE BUT THEY HAD A RLLY AWFUL TAKE ON SHIGIRAKI AND I NEEDED TO RANT.

ok so they stated they didn't like shigiraki because he lacked motivation WHICH IS A TAKE IVE SURPRISINGLY SEEN MORE THAN ONCE, AND I JUST WANNA BREAK IT DOWN.

Not every character needs a super strong motivation.

IDK MAYBE THATS A HOT TAKE BUT I CAN THINK OF PLENTY OF CHARACTER'S I LIKE WHO DON'T HAVE SUPER STRONG MOTIVATIONS. Actually same series, MR COMPRESS I LOVE THE GUY I DON'T, AS FAR AS I KNOW, THINK HE HAS SOME CRAZY STRONG MOTIVATION. This point might be more my personal opinions-y but i just wanted to say it. NEXT POINT:

2. Shigiraki DOES have a motivation

HIS MOTIVATION IS KILLING ALL MIGHT. I'm in season 3 rn, so maybe he suddenly changes his opinions later but as of the story he wants All Might dead, that is his goal, and to some extent he wants to destroy everything, to ruin hero soceity. I could see an arguement the latter is his true motivation, EITHER WAY HE DEFINITELY HAS ONE.

also ik some ppl look at character motivation differently so alternatively: you could argue his motivation is the rlly messed up event in his childhood with his family, or:

3. His raising by All for One.

OKAY SOME PEOPLE SEEM TO BE UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT ALL FOR ONE MANIPULATED SHIGIRAKI, AND GROOMED HIM TO BE A TOOL. LIKE IT IS VERY BLATANT; he took in shigiraki as a child, after (SPOILERS)

shigiraki had killed his own family, and he convinced shigiraki it was all his fault, that he'd meant to do that, that he had evil inside him, an urge to destroy. Shigiraki is the product of over a decade of manipulation and grooming, and it also made blatanlty clear that he is not mentally well, probably depressed LIKE EVEN IF YOU DONT COUNT THAT AS A MOTIVATION THE MANIPULATION IS A REASONING BEHIND HIS ACTIONS.

IDK IFTHIS MAKES SENSE JUST BUGS ME WHEN PPLHATE ON A CHARACTER I LIKE FOR A REASON THATS FACTUALLY WRONG. (IVE PROLLY DONE THE SAME BEFORE WITHOUT REALZIING BUT YEH IDK)

they both hold each other in the highest respect. william sees dakota as the prime (ha) example of what a hero should be. hes brave hes kind he does his best to protect everyone no matter what. hes all the things that william Isnt. BUT !!!! dakota also looks up to him !!! hes so smart hes good at problem solving hes so curious about everything and asking questions and poking his nose into things that nobody else would even consider. dakota knows hes not smart so he automatically looks to william whenever he needs a plan or someone to tell him what to do when he feels lost. they complement each other and they dont even !!!!! know it !!!!!!!

also regarding williams powers. fuck dude. season 1 he was so fucking scared of himself and ashamed of the things he could do . he hid every time he had to use wisp form !!! but dakota always thought it was so cool and was not QUIET about it. boy went fucking STAR EYES the first time he saw wisp form !!!!!! i will never stop thinking abt the first rolled for season 2 where charlie goes "if dakota hadnt left, he probably wouldve been able to convince william to keep using his powers and not to completely disregard their existence like he has been" and . considering what william is like in season 2... god this wouldve been a COMPLETELY different fucking campaign. theyre so. incredibly soulmates to me. theyre so important to each other theyd do anything for each other. i cant say too much more without accidentally giving you spoilers bc i WILL keep talking and not be able to shut up but GOD fuck ghostkicks enjoyers eat so well in the latter half of s2. moirails. 2 me !!!!!!!

As of right now, I am hopeful that there is going to be a Mal route. Mal will still have Milo connections (just as Milo would if you were dating him). Again, this is something I think might happen but I don't know. I don't plan out my books before writing them. I just see where the characters want to go. I know that is kind of stressful for some readers but I don't want to give solid answers and then change it at the last minute.

Sweet/Spicy/Savoury? I have a severe sweet tooth, I admit, but I love my savoury foods. I'm trying to spice train myself, too XD I've never been that good with spicy food, but I've been slowly incorporating more spice into my food choices and I'm getting better. Thinking abt guardian again... Okay like yk the scene in the drama where zyl and da qing are talking like "why would Heipaoshi have a human identity, like why does he need that" and da qing is like "idk, to see his lover maybe" THATS ACTUALLY TAKEN FROM A SCENE IN THE NOVEL but it's shen wei and zyl talking. So like when zyl uncovers his identity in the novel he stops talking to shen wei for like 2 months bc the soul reaper (the novels vers of Heipaoshi) is actually his boss. Like in the drama they never meet till ep 1 and zyl is like "damn u finally showed up huh hps" but in the novel the soul reaper worked alongside zyl for years and even in his past reincarnations. It's the only form he's legally allowed to contact zyl in without him dying. He acts as the regent of the underworld and always brings back the spirits the SID caught for judgement. So he was like.. oh Fuck this is mortifying i made out with my boss, he must hate me (which also doesn't make much sense like why would he hate u now, that happened before he found out i just.. idk it was weird... Like i didn't get why zyl was avoiding him, like he had confirmation sw liked him back and his feelings didn't change knowing he was the soul reaper, he just thought that shen wei must hate him now but WHATEVER) but yea he like is finally forced to talk to shen wei and he asks him "why do you stay on the surface?" And sw tells him "bc there's someone i want to see" and obviosly that someone is zyl and god the mental illness that line brought i... God. But yea... That line from the drama was a nice call back to smfh sw said in the novel and this post was needlessly long I'm still posting it tho this is my blog.
