-- i'm going to keep this short because i'm too tired right now. this year has had its ups and downs, as always. all in all, it's been a pretty good 2023 for me, so i'm wishing 2024 will be as well. thank you to everyone who has been with me even when i haven't been around as much myself, who has supported me and my writing. i hope 2024 brings you happiness and peace!

Bob was quiet on the drive home, tension rolling off him in waves, and Abby didn’t know what was going on.

Everything was fine when they left earlier that evening and when they’d walked into the Hard Deck for drinks with Kennedy and Rooster, and Phoenix, who was in town on leave. 

At some point, Bob’s demeanor changed. He grew quiet, distant even. He didn’t react when she put her hand high on his thigh while they sat in the booth, and he removed his arm from around her shoulder.

Something happened, but Abby was at a loss as to what it could be.

Bob parked in the usual spot in front of Abby’s apartment complex. He went around and opened her door for her, and they even had their fingers intertwined as they walked up the stairs and into her apartment.

Once inside, Bob let go of her hand and headed straight for the kitchen. Abby slipped off her boots and pattered in after him.

“You want coffee?” He asked, already prepping the pot.

“Yes,” she said and leaned against the counter. She watched him work. His hands knowing the location of everything in her kitchen, the way he moved around the space with ease and familiarity.

He turned the coffee machine on, and they listened to it splutter to life.

“Bob,” Abby said and approached him. She placed a hand on his arm, and though he didn’t flinch, his muscles tensed at her touch. “What’s going on?”

His clear blue eyes finally looked at her for the first time since they left the bar, and she could tell something was bothering him.

“Nothing,” he dismissed, stepping back from her and leaned against the countertop. 

Abby stared at him. The arms crossed over his chest, his shoulders filled with tension and pulled up to his ears, the cute half-smile he always wore around her gone, and his eyes avoiding hers at all costs.

“I don’t appreciate you lying to me.” Her tone was harsh, accusatory, and unlike any way she’d spoken to him before.

“I’m not,” he argued, but Abby knew him. She knew that the corner of his mouth twitched downward when he wasn’t telling the truth or if something was bothering him. She knew every part of him, even the things he kept from himself.

“Okay,” she said, defeated, and retreated to the opposite counter, mirroring his stance. She bit the inside of her cheek, pushing down her growing annoyance.

The only sound that filled her kitchen was the coffee pot’s slow dripping as it finishing brewing.

Bob drew in a deep breath, shifting his weight from one foot to the other before looking up to meet Abby’s eyes. There was a different type of vulnerability there that she didn’t immediately recognize. Something foreign and terrified in those blue eyes she loved so much.

“I heard you,” he said. Abby opened her mouth to ask what he meant, but Bob held his palm up, stopping her. “Talking to that pilot asking about me.”

Abby’s brows knitted together in a moment of confusion. “With Checkmate?” Bob looked unsure, but nodded anyway. “He asked who you were, so I told him.”

“No,” he said, voice firmer. Angrier. “You said that’s just Bob, as if I was just some guy you just met.”

Abby thought back to the conversation. Checkmate was part of the current Top Gun class, and he’d come over to her while she was getting refills at the bar. He’d asked some questions about the class schedule and then asked about the people she was with, recognizing only Rooster. 

The dent between her brows deepened. “And that’s all you heard?” Bob hummed in agreement. “Then you missed the part where I told him you were the top wizzo in your Top Gun class, that you’re my boyfriend, and how proud of you I am.”

Bob’s eyes widened and his jaw went slack. “I–”

“I shouldn’t have said what I did because there’s nothing just about you or our relationship.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but Abby continued pushing off the counter and walked up to him. “But don’t ice me out because you heard a fraction of a conversation. We’re adults and we talk about what's bothering us. You got that?”

He uncrossed his arms and tentatively reached for her. “Yes, ma’am,” he whispered and squeezed her hips. “I’m sorry.”

Abby stood on her tiptoes, placing a hand on the back of his neck, and pulled him down to her. “It’s okay. I’m sorry too,” she whispered against his lips and pecked them. “Now, pour me some coffee.”

THEY DO YEAH! i tend to have music associations for characters in general tho characters w specific 'theme song' esque songs narrows it down (which i am doing on purpose cuz i will talk too much abt too many ocs otherwise gbhfhg).

Look, I am far from a royalist but as London Fashion Week draws to a close, the weekend saw a who’s who of the fashion mourn a Queen of the people whose crowning would’ve truly made me reconsider my position. It goes without saying that the impact Vivienne Westwood has had on both her contemporaries and a younger generation of up and coming designers is monumental, but above and beyond that, what made her such an incredible individual was the consistency with which she stuck to her principles over the years and championed a fairer world, free of structural barriers, discrimination and the destructive force of rampant capitalism on the earth.

She didn’t have to be That Bitch, in an industry which too often actively worked and continues to work against her goals, but she did at risk to her own success, and she made some fucking incredible clothes whilst she was at it.

Vivienne had every capability of being a thorn in the side of the industry figureheads operating business models domineered by overconsumption and yet her legacy will outlive every trend cycle imaginable ten to the dozen, reminding us that above all, principles & passion are the best thing we have if we want to truly make in impact.

-”Pirates” collection, 1981: Though by this point Vivienne had already established a name for herself within the industry, namely through the widespread popularity of the Chelsea boutique she opened with partner Malcolm McLaren in 1971 and her work styling the Sex Pistols, whom McLaren managed, it wasn’t until a decade later that she made her runway debut with her “Pirates” collection. And you know what? She was so right for that. These are men who sail the world in pursuit of Jewells, ffs. How historically accurate that statement is, I have no clue; Peter Pan probably isn’t the best frame of reference. All I know is that ruffles and Jewells and big hats and bold patterns are absolutely my cup of tea and all those of us girlies with a preference for maximalism owe Vivienne Westwood a thank you for helping the stiff upper lipped power players of that period realise that.-

-Arguably, the early years of Vivienne’s runway residency was characterised by a consistent drive to dissect, explore, and push the boundaries of the fashion of bygone eras through her work in a provocative, tongue in cheek kind of way, but one that ultimately showed her knowledge and love of fashion. Her flirtation with the whimsical, ethereal hallmarks of romantic period dressing and references to the costume-like decadence associated with the nobility and wealth of the post-renaissance world helped to torpedo a giant, jagged hole through the perfectly polished wall high fashion had built around itself to retain its status as an interest reserved for the privileged. 

Vivienne’s growing cultural relevance occurred in the midst of the 90s grunge movement that banished the illusion everything had to be perfectly refined at all times, and championed the gaudy, the over the top, the playful, controversial and performative. This time, counterculture was unruly, broody, and intentionally unyielding in a way that closely harked back to the values of the ‘70s London punk scene where VW had started out, and so it makes sense that interest in her work grew given the position her clothing came to be associated with in this decade

I don’t claim to be enough of a fashion expert to know the complete history of costume piece inspired designers and to be able to say Vivienne was the very first to bring this subversion of the expectation to appear aloof, elegant, and let’s be honest, occasionally boring as fuck, to the runway through her exploration of period clothing but she has to be one of the first to bring such a playfulness to it and her collections at the time certainly helped to reignite the childhood desire that exists in every person interested in fashion to play dress up.-

-She further developed her brand’s reputation as a disruptor of the status quo in a time which saw young people in the Western world grow tired of the straight laced conservatism of the Thatcher/Reagan (forget Charlie Kelly and Frank Reynolds, these 2 were the OG gruesome twosome) and the tastemakers of the fashion world followed suit, lauding her work. As much as the impact of massive industry players is portrayed as having a trickle down effect (see what I did there) on the trend cycle, designers inevitably draw inspiration from the current social climate whether acknowledged or not and in this way the aesthetics adopted by boots on the ground, the influence of art and pop culture, makes its way back up to the runway where the Anna Wintours of the world have to like it. For people like Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo (founder of Commes Des Garcons), Ann Demeulemeester, and Yohji Yamamoto, who occupied much of the same avant-garde, anti-establishment scene from the ‘70s onwards with all 3 having been customers at Vivienne’s boutique and setting up shop in London at one point or another, incorporating that disruptive spirit probably felt like a return to their roots as designers.-

-In this period where anti-fashion established itself as an integral part of what was decidedly “in”-fashion, new roots, which would go on to produce some of today’s boldest designers, buried themselves deep and inevitably soaked up Vivienne and her contemporaries’ celebration of androgyny, experimentation with subversive silhouettes and prints, and embrace of the dark and dramatic to tell stories through their styling which served as the antidote to the immaculate coordination of looks showcased by fashion giants like Chanel. Vivienne collections managed to grasp hold of the psyches of even the most prestigious designers, and the lasting effects were visible in the heavily period themed, almost theatrical collections, the debuts of which broke the expected mould for labels traditionally associated with a sense of refinement and/or glamour. That Donatella Versace, for example, would draw influence from punk aesthetics is unexpected but once you’re aware she’s expressed her admiration for Vivienne Westwood, there are a number of Versace collections over the years where you can’t unsee that inspiration. John Galliano was known to sit front row at her shows! John Galliano. That, baby, is one mighty flex.-

-You could argue the prevalence of Westwood gowns amongst the rich and famous is kinda antithetic to its founder’s manifesto but we can’t be delusional and forget it’s a high fashion label we’re talking about and well, a business. Ultimately the craftsmanship and time which goes into original designs means red carpet photos are probs the closest 99% of us are gonna get but I’ll take it. I’m thirsty. Helena Bonham-Carter, one of the many prominent figures in attendance at Vivienne’s funeral, kinda symbolises the dichotomy; as much as her public image is of her as someone who exists outside the boundaries imposed by a privileged, aloof, very airbrushed elite, we are talking a woman with a double-barrelled family name which carries with it the exactly the kind of wealth and lineage you’d expect it to. But at the same time, she is someone who has chosen to break away from the expectations set upon her by this kind of background and do things her own way. Not so much so that her whole mismatched, slightly dishevelled whilst simultaneously very cool outer appearance isn’t made up of expensive, designer subcomponents, but if you’re going to have some brand loyalty, Helena being a Vivienne simp feels correct:

That being said, you just have to look at the earliest prominent iteration of the staple showcased in Portraits; the way the shape was utilised flew in the face of all that was conventional and “demure” through its combination with religious iconography, micro skirts and nude illusion cut outs, in the ‘80s ffs, so need I say more about what it is that made it so groundbreaking? It was a moment that was emblematic of the middle finger to the world attitude that Vivienne’s collections are known for, and which makes it such an iconic, and true to brand piece that is still loved, emulated, and collected by a very lucky few today.-

Ending with the content Vivienne would most likely find to be closest to her heart is a reflection on the Andreas Kronlather for Vivienne Westwood, surely the purest form of her punk spirit that will go on without her. Undeniably, Vivienne has had no greater influence on anyone than her husband, Andreas, with whom she publicly entrusted the more affordable offshoot of her brand, and whose creative relationship first began when he began working under her wing in the late ‘80s. I Watched The Society in 2023

I finished binge watching The Society a couple days ago, knowing it was cancelled before it got a second season.

1 I disliked Allie. And that goofy smile she did when Lexie was talking about how she had to undress in front of the Guard, that smile made me hate Allie even more. I can't stand her.

2 Elle is awesome. Her relationship with Campbell was awesome until the reveal that he's a violent psychopath who can't love her. Real bummer, because that was my favorite pairing in the show.

3 Grizz is awesome. I got a lot of respect for him when he opted out of killing Dewey. The guy has a heart of gold.

4 I actually like Lexie and sympathize with her.

5 During the tag football thing outside on the Thanksgiving episode, I loved the scene when Jason is scolding Will after he got tackled by Kelly. Man, I wish this show got a second season.

6 When they played Fugitives in the second episode, that was awesome. Too cool.

7 That girl in the green prom dress, Jessica, I wish we saw more of her. She was one of those minor characters I became fond of, even though she was barely in the show. She should've been a side character or main character. You cannot show a beautiful character walking in a ruined street while wearing a beautiful dress and not promote her to main character status.

8 When Sam scolded Allie and she was just looking at him, I LMAO'd.

9 I loved the Will and Kelly ship.

10 I loved the Allie/Cassandra sister bond. Like when Allie used herself as a human shield when Campbell pointed his gun at Cassandra. That's sisterly love right there. Allie was a bit of a jerk to Cass sometimes, though.

11 I loved the Gordie and Cassandra pairing. When he said he was going to learn to take care of her, man, my heart ❤️

12 Allie was right when she defended Campbell when Will wanted him executed. You can't kill someone for something they might do. People IRL want to punish people with mental disorders just because they might hurt someone in the future, which is wrong. You punish people when they actually commit a crime. Not before.

13 I love how Allie grieves Cassandra's death. How she lays on her death spot. This show didn't do the cliché non-stop sobbing. The writers made Allie mourn in creative, realistic ways.

14 Someone on Reddit said The Society isn't groundbreaking television, and the person didn't elaborate. How is this not groundbreaking television?

15 That nightmare about the Guard slitting Will's throat and shooting Allie. Pretty cool. And wonderful foreshadowing, considering the Guard betrays Allie and Will in the end. Also, Luke's girlfriend, Helena, was cool until Elle revealed that she (Helena) called Elle a thot. That was so weird and jarring, considering Helena seemed like such a nice character until that moment. Elle is a sweet angel BTW. She deserved better.

16 Kelly was awesome. But I hated it when she cussed out that one girl for saying generalizing men is wrong. Happened in episode 3 at the meeting building, I believe. Also, I had a short-lived theory that Harry and Kelly were brother and sister, because of the fact their parents were having an affair with each other. I figured Harry's mom gave birth to him and Kelly. I guess I watch too much House of the Dragon.

17 I knew the bus driver in the photos was going to become a big deal. I noticed how they kept showing his face whenever the school bus trip pictures were shown, and I knew this would be brought up later.

18 I wish Campbell got killed off.

19 I wish Cassandra lived. I do have to mention that I know she got killed off before I even watched the show. I spoiled it for myself. But I forgot who the killer was. The mystery surrounding the murderer was messing with my mind lol.

20 Wishing this show had more hugs. Allie and Cassandra didn't hug at all.

21 All Becca did was be pregnant. That seemed to be her only thing. She seemed more like a figment of Sam's imagination, since she hardly interacted with any of the other characters.

22 I really hate Allie's character. Kelly and Grizz should have been the main two characters. Also, Will is painfully bland as a character. At least Allie has some complexity to her. Will is one-note and his thing seems to be "I had a bad life" and nothing else.

23 The Society is a great show. It has some flaws, like having the painfully frustrating characters Allie and Will, but that doesn't make it a mediocre show. It's pretty good. And it needs a second season.

The first time Elle meets Helena is at Kelly and Becca’s engagement party. Elle had spilled champagne all over her top, and Helena had been the only one to help her clean up. It’d been nice. They’d talked, made bets over who’d give the first drunken speech (“Will, obviously.” “I don’t know, Allie and Harry just broke up, and I’m pretty sure Harry pre-gamed before this.”) and, at the end of the night Helena had slipped Elle her phone number.

Elle’s surprised they didn’t meet sooner, wonders if they did meet, forever ago, at some party or event or coffee shop. She doubts it, though. She’d remember Helena.

The second time they run into each other is three months later is at a housewarming party Harry and Allie are hosting. 

“How long until they break up again?” Helena had said, coming to stand beside Elle, a plate of food in one hand. It’d been so casual, and a flutter appeared in Elle’s chest, faint but there. She took a deep breath.

“Harry heard Cassandra ask that same exact thing, so they might just get married to spite her.”

Helena snorts, and Elle smiles, and they spend the rest of the night sitting on the couch talking, promises made for something like this to happen again soon.

And so the third time they’re together is less than a week later and finally on purpose at some small bakery Elle worked at her freshman year of college. They pick up a box of pastries, and Helena invites Elle over to her place. 

“It’s just down the block. You don’t have to if you already have plans but--”

“No,” Elle cuts in, quick, almost frantic. “I don’t have plans, I mean. I’d love to go over to your place.”

Helena smiles, something soft, there, undeniably there, but also… “Okay.”

In Helena’s kitchen, in front of a half empty box of pastries on the counter next to a bottle wine that was opened and then forgotten about, in front of a sink that keeps dripping and a fridge that rattles the cabinets next to it, Elle kisses Helena, all in a rush, quiet after, apologetic.

“I’m sorry. That was--”

“That was nice,” Helena says, leaning slightly on the counter. There’s a crumb on her lip from a chocolate croissant. Elle reaches to wipe it away. She tries to remember the last time she felt like this. She can’t.

He blinked rapidly, first staring down at his nose and then at Jas’ finger as her hand fell back at her side. “Did you...” he trailed off, shaking his head. “Did you just boop my nose?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Jas snorted, and brushed past him, rounding the kitchen island. “Coffee?”

He turned on his heel, watching Jas as she grabbed the mugs with hand-painted mushrooms on them that’d been an anniversary gift from her moms last year. “I can’t believe you booped my nose,” he muttered, walking to her and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

He nuzzled into her neck, kissing her pulse point, and Jas shrieked at the contact, laughter breaking up the silence in her house. Their house. “Jake!” she exclaimed as he spun her around to face him.

“You gotta let me unpack, Doc,” he told her and booped her nose.

“Fine,” she relented, defeat in her bright blue eyes. “Just not on that shelf, okay?”

Leaning down, he kissed her like his life depended on it. He’s pretty sure it did. “Okay,” he muttered against her lips as her arms snuck around his neck, deepening the kiss.
