Danny is listening to the various eyeballs and ghosts chatter on about all the issues that he now has to oversee and advise and make so many freaking decisions on. It’s annoying that it all has to come down to his call because he was a dumb 14 year old who didn’t want his town to permanently live in the ghost zone.

Now 17, King of the Infinite, and a bit wiser to the world, Danny is doing his best to balance his teenage ambitions to not give a shit and his protective obsession to very much give a shit.

Sams parents are making her learn the family business and Tucker is trying to make this internship he’s got with a fancy tech company out of New Jersey into a career without college… so while they’re commiserating with Danny the idea comes up.

Earth has a shit ton of heroes. Like, ever since the Justice League *poofed* the GIW out of existence with the Meta human acts- more and more caped crusaders seemed to be coming out of the wood work. More villains too but still, more people who seemed wise to their abilities and morals. Danny has literally never taken an ethics class.

But rn, Eye-mothy and Eye-Bert are arguing over how Danny as King Phantom is supposed to tackle the problem of some fucking pool acting as a weird trade route with a cult and… ugh it’s just so boring but like also such a fucking problem. But… maybe it can be someone else’s issue.

Opening a portal, Danny escapes into space and gets to work finding the base of operations- Tucker had told him there was a new satellite after all and there’s no way it wasn’t connected to the hero orgs- and boom he flies into the Watchtower.

“Hey- are any of you guys willing to consult on some weird pools of ectoplasm in Pakistan? Green and glowing little lakes of bullshit and magic?” Danny asks into the meeting room of the JL regardless of their startled and alarmed exclamations.

“… I could consult on that.” A voice comes from the corner, and Danny recognizes him as one of the bat people. Or bird? The guy is in a lot of red and clearly wasn’t supposed to be in this meeting based on the way he’s propped in the corner. The room erupts in protest but Danny barely hears them through his excitement and focus on the dude.

“Great! I’ll have him back before the end of the day! Lets go Bird boy!” And with that, Danny grabbed the Bird, chucked them both through a portal back into his thrown room and begins to explain the way these eyeballs are totally trying to trap him into doing more work than he needs to do.

“What do I call you by the way? I’m Danny but you’ll probably hear them call me King Phantom.”

“I go by Red Robin, and honestly, I’ve been trying to get this shit taken care of for years.”

From there Tim becomes a regular consultant for King Phantom- the Bat Family is losing their minds with him constantly going to the land of the dead but also Constantine said not to piss off the king at all costs.

Danny is just thrilled that this dude has a shit ton of insight as well as business sense- like he could legit run the monarchy way better than him despite the fact that they’re the same age.

They end up working together for years, and even when there’s not an active issue at hand, Danny will meet up with the bird just to talk.

Sam and Tucker think they’re hilarious each time they ask if Danny’s proposed yet.

Tim has already planned their wedding but all of that information is in a folder more secured than the nuclear codes- Danny needs to ask him on a date first.

Damien is having fun trying to catch the thief that was stealing supposedly cursed artifacts and is surprised when he finally corners the thief that it is a someone his own age and is even more surprised when the thief disappears the literally second he turns his back

'Not taking it well' was an understatement.

She fled to the Infinity Realms towards ClockWork. CW felt more like his dad than Jack had for a long while now. He was a bit suspicious when CW told him that the Zone had decided to rehabilitate Pariah Dark but so far he had been staying in line if a bit of a harsh grump and maybe a future parental figure with how he and CW seemed to look at each other when they thought the other wasn't paying attention.

But on the other hand she was thankful he was still king and not Danny, wow had that been a shock to her finding out he was almost king before he was even an adult, he was still titled prince but at least he wasn't the one in charge of everything.

Speaking of being in charge of things, they as a prince still had duties to fulfill, ClockPa had decided it was best for his growth that she return to Earth but not the same one where he would be in danger, no instead it was an Earth with multiple heroes and magic and even aliens!!!

The only thing he had to do was find haunted or ecto powered objects and either return them to their rightful owner or have it put somewhere secure.

Damian had a new rogue, they called themselves Phantom and their crimes resembled greatly of Catwoman's only with seemingly spiritual centered objects.

He had already faced the teasing of all his siblings about how he was resembling father

...and as much as he hated agreeing with them, after almost a year of constantly fighting, chasing, bantering and most recently actually getting to talking he had learned that they were very close in age and had a lot of similar interest they could talk about together with for hours if given the chance.

Soon their dynamic slowly began shifting without either realizing it,

And well who knows what the future holds for them but until then,

The chase continues.

I have been reading and rereading your pain share au, it's such an awesome concept for Linked Universe, I love it!

Anyway, I was thinking (sorry if anyone else have already asked this), you know how pain is actually useful ok? It gives you feedback when something is not right. Imagine you are in a battle and you suddenly feel an acute pain in your sides, maybe an arrow reached you (you have some protection, therefore it didn't cause that much damage, but enough to let you know something hit you), or maybe you were hit with a blunt object, or were pushed, so you immediately react by protecting better that zone, moving farther, or attack from the direction of the hit... Except in this case is a phantom pain.

Being so used to chaotic battles, how are the chain going to fight effectively if they don't have accurate feedback? Add the fact that they are probably fighting by reflex and I can sense all the chaos and doing bad moves due to inaccurate sensations.

Damn, I think in this case the best they can do is to let just one of them fight and the rest just watch haha.

Anyway, I love your art!

“This is an au that I have made, and is up coming as I wanted some action from my “MerMay Chronicles” in May 2024. This one will be a bit more animalistic and hopefully a bit more horrifying for mine and your tastes. So, I will try and explain to my best abilities of what this Au is, and the planned warnings it will have.” - Ichor

Alright, this Au will not be like @/Kit-Willams “Space Marine Husbandry Sentience” or @/Egrets-not-regrets “Of Fin and Feathers AU,” but it does have an hint of their aspects in there as both of those aus has inspired this one. One of those aspects being that it’s set in the same modern era (21st century.)

This one is more of a… sea monster, elderich au. That the best I can explain it in a few words or less, but for an attempted longer description?

Nox Thalassic Au is more in a Horror, Monster-Romance genre. It is not anything like the Au’s listed above as this one is gory, less cutesy and more primal where these creatures of the deep take a sudden interest in some mere, small mortal that dares to venture too far from the surface, catching a current of things of paradox. Changing their view of what really lays at sea; scaring them for what these creatures could do, but also… teaching both sides as well.

What Is The Point Of This Au: It’s for my own enjoyment and yours if you would like to read it. Though, I mostly wanted to create this au to be included, but I realized my mindset is a bit different than others.

What Is The Goal Of This Au: What’s the enjoyment in it if you and I already know the end and climax of the Au?

How Will The Updates Be Like: I’m not honestly particularly fond of this question. I update when I can. I am uncanny for switching projects and WIP’s. Not to mention life can get in the way. Though, I update my Masterlist immediately.

How Much Does This Change: Quite a lot, honestly. Not so much of the characters behaviors, but just the plot, setting, species, and definitely power.

Change from 2024 Mermay: Most have gotten a “redesign” you could say since then. So, some will not be the same like they were in 2024. Definitely more… bigger.

Setting: Deep underwater: Midnight Zone to The Trenches and further. Submarine volcano/Hydrothermal Vents/Cold Seeps, Seamounts, Abyssal Plains, Mariana Trench, and cursed locations like the Bermuda Triangle.

Speech: Very, very limited. More animalistic: growls, huffs and hisses… They are very intelligent… creatures however.

What Are These “Creatures” Like: They are mythical; elderich. Something like the Cthulhu, Charybdis and a Lernaean Hydra.

Depth Levels: Midnight Zone, The Abyss, The Trenches, Void Frontier, Site of Nox, Genesis Core.

How Can They Cause “Destruction:” They usually come up for air on the darkest nights, the most dangerous storms, forbidden areas like the Bermuda Triangle, and even cause a such catastrophe for themselves in order to get what they want.

Levels: Primeval: This level means what can be still seen. What is still alive and incredibly dangerous: Adeptus Custodes, Gray Knights & Adeptus Astartes. Ancient: This level is higher, more complicated. The beings are alive, but also a fragmentation: Primarchs & Demi-Gods. Primordial: Where gods reside, never to be seen but spoken of. To feel their influence and power from just beyond: The Emperor & Chaos Gods.

Primarchs & Emperor/Gods: The Primarchs are considered truthful myths. Sea/Space Eldritch they hold very high respect for, and some even have dreams of them. The Emperor & Chaos Gods are a bit of a different story but of course. They are held above a “Primarch level.” They can be sighted however. When they want to be. It’s very tricky though. They do not appear physically, more Phantom-like.

Adeptus Custodes: Can be solo or not, doesn’t matter for it seems they protect something that means a lot to them. 0 chance to fool for they are adaptable, and are the biggest creature of the deep.

Gray Knights: Are more solo Eldritch, but very, very dangerous when packed together. They protect the depths from how much the humans explore and how much they shouldn’t. Keeping a fine line and balance of keeping the forbidden between the creatures and humans apart. They also eat anything they can find in the Void Frontier, including bones. Never try to approach or see one.

Other Mythical/Eldritch Creatures: Yes, on the surface and not: Leviathan’s, Kraken, Hydra, Giant Squid… They all gotta eat somehow.

HC/AU Prompt Thingy (7 I think?)

Considering the amount of times Batman has died (or come close to death) and the amount of things Joker has somehow survived, I'd believe it.

Let's say, Joker died many years ago, the day he first fell into the vat of acid. Too bad the clown had enough strong emotions to come back. And let's be honest, Batman also died a long time ago. Probably when Bane broke his back. At this point, he is purely living off of spite and vengeance.

With that out of the way, do you guys remember that one idea where while Jason's dead, he spends his time in the zone and becomes friends with Danny? Only for his to mysteriously disappear because he got resurrected? That's what I'm going with here.

Danny found Jason aimlessly floating and quickly took him under his wing. It only took a short time for the two to become inseparable. Which is why Danny is crushed when Jason up and vanishes. No one saw where he went. No one saw what happened to him. His disappearance was so sudden and so mysterious that Danny almost wanted to believe his best friend had his final death. But things just didn't add up. So he went searching.

Meanwhile, our ghosty boy has now become only a half ghosty boy due to his unique resurrection. Unfortunately for Jason though, halfas still need ectoplasm too and he is not getting nearly enough of it, leading to him being quite angry and destructive.

Oh! You what would be interesting? If instead of wanting Bruce to kill Joker to avenge him, Jason just goes for the kill himself. Except for Joker won't die. No matter what he does to him. Because of the whole already a ghost thing. But that doesn't stop Jason from trying. Nor does it stop Bruce from trying to talk him down.

So now there's this three-way stand off going on. It is at this point in time that Danny comes through a portal determined to find Jason. But that's not all! Because by time Danny has finally managed to track his bestest buddy down, he may or may not have acquired the title of Prince of the Infinite Realms. Which may or may not give him power over all dead and never living. Which includes Joker and Batman. Which makes it extra funny when said three-way stand off comes to an end by Phantom appearing and ordering two of the three to kneel.

Rearing all the way back to my I think first eastern dragon Danny au post? Yea the first one.

So, we'll say that Clockwork never reversed the Nasty Burger explosion, leaving Danny devastated. The Observants feared he would turn into Dark Danny, but he doesn't, instead he throws his all in everything that's been going on in the ghost zone under Pariah's absence.

There was nothing tying him to humanity anymore, so he shed his identity as Daniel Phantom, and was reborn anew as Danny Phantom.

The Eternal Prince of the Ghost Zone.

He threw himself into everything there was to know about being a prince, etiquette training, learning the history of the Ghost Zone (which isn't really that important since there was only ever one ruler for a long, long time.), connecting with the high society of the ghost, etc, etc.

So he's shed his time as a child and forced his way into adulthood, face cold and regal like the ice he controls, and endless majesty with his draconic features, multiplied even further when he transforms.

Surprisingly, Vlad easily and willingly submitted to him (not through combat) after Danny made the phoenix his Duke, the Nasty Burger explosion must've hit him hard as it did Danny, then.

Then he's summoned to another dimension, a ritual meant to summon the Ghost King, and usually it wouldn't work, since Pariah Dark is sleeping. But since he came into power as Prince, it decided to do the next best thing and pull him along.

Unfortunately, however, he couldn't go back for some reason. So he just, had to stay here until he found a way to go back, and the cult wasn't anything that great, just wanted the usual power and riches in exchange for the souls of others and the like.

Then a group of humans broke in, fought the cult, and whatever being they were expecting was probably not him, and yes, he gets it. Pariah Dark is a terrifying man, so he wouldn't do anything to the ones that did a double take at seeing him in the circle. Then he just, left.

There was a lot of differences between this world and the world he remembered back where he came from and before he cut out humanity. For one, there were Superheroes and Supervillains, another was that magic was apparently a common thing (mostly in heroes or villains) and that there was people called 'Metas' walking around living day to day lives.

So having to hide his draconic features wasn't something he had to do, so he didn't. Though he did, for the first time in a while, become human again, first thing he noticed?

He was hungry.

Second thing he noticed?

He was very exhausted.

Third thing he noticed?

He had no money.

Well he had some, but he didn't think that other dimensional currency would work well here. So he'll admit, he did steal a few food items here and there with his ghostly abilities, and was enjoying human food when he ran into a kid.

Literally.

He was eating his last burger and walking around, looking at the city around- Fawcett if he remembered correctly from overhearing- and ran into the kid. Who looked similar to him with the black hair and blue eyes, really, someone was chasing the kid and he didn't ask any questions before grabbing him by the arm and phasing them through a few walls to get away.

Unfortunately, such things left him even further exhausted than he already was. It seemed that never sleeping in the Zone finally caught up with him, and he feel asleep on the kid.

That child was Billy, who was questioning who this Meta was and currently panicking before realizing that they just fell asleep.

I bet you know Immortal Husbands AU by ghost-chicky. I suggest to expand it with Omegaverse AU, mentioned in sks before (alpha > omega >> beta), Ghost king AU and space fiction.

According to Immortal Husbands AU, halfas age up to only 30 year, and they have to start new life from time to time. Dani was born in their second life. Vlad and Danny were over-warning her to hide her nature from people while she could be relax with ghosts, so, she's always been close to the Ghost Realm. Their daughter's interest and governmental crazy interruptations to the other world didn't let halfas leave Ghost Zone behind for, at least, one life. It has been becoming clearier that they should take the situation in their hands before it's too late. The best way to regulate relations between ghosts & people is to gain political weight. Danny fought with Pariah again, but that time he erased him. According to Ghost Realm laws, he became new Ghost king.

Not revealing his identity, as Phantom the king he entered into negotiations with the earthly government, the result of which were laws regulating movement between worlds and establishing prohibitions on what people in the Ghost Zone cannot do and what ghosts cannot do in the human world. After 2 decades of negotiations Danny finally returned to his normal life with Vlad. Danny visited the Ghost Zone only for issues that Parliament of Supreme Ghosts couldn't resolve without hime. For those movements Danny got for himself and for Dani artefacts, that works like Wulf's claws.

Yes, Vlad could be jealous for Danny's powers but he would come through it.

Halfas keep hidding their nature from the humanity until XXVI century when aliens find the Earth and give an ultimatim: "Become slaves of our cosmic Empire or your planet will be destroyed".

Of course, people are scared to the death. They still don't have weapons to fight back, they even didn't finish terraforming the Mars! Aliens' slavery includes all biopunk horror you possibly can imagine, no one would agree on it. In these times halfas reveal themselves with the idea how to save the part of the humanity: move a part of the Earth to the Ghsot Realm, and the whole Ghost Zone to the.. strong ecto-box! (Box Ghost: (:D My time has come!) Insane, but… it worked.

By that time Anti-ghost shields and costumes, ecto-filter systems was developed enough (thx to the between-worlds tourism) to people could safely live in the Ghost Zone (even without cancerogenic threat!). People quickly learnt to use ectoplasm as energy source. This is how the Space Era for humans had started. Yes, people keep terraforming the Mars but it took even more time to move on this planet. Until that, people will start a war with that aliens but ex-earthlings' warriors are belong to the race of halfa.

Obviously, halfas fit much more for Space. The only thing they need is an oxygen balloon, and even if it cracked they can easily repair it with ecto-glue or something. But people already has the compact oxygen-generating station. And halfas are dangerous weapons themselves, so, they are the best space warriors. VladCo is back! :D But this VladEctoScince now. They speciales on the difficult ecto-technology, and if the tech are made to be used in spaceship/open-space, it's an ecto-construction (all from ectoplasm, handmade by Plasmius). Vlad must change his cape to a medical gown.

Probably Vlad and Danny got a son, too, between 200 y.o. and the last day of Earth. Dani still would the traveller of the Ghost Zone while the boy will live near by parents, and under his parents' shadow since the start of teh Space Era.

1000 Follower Celebration!

I'm blown away, honestly. The last time I had any notoriety in a fandom was back in, like 2007 or 2008 when I was on the Dibbuns Against Bedtime fan forums for Redwall. I was made the head of my dorm as the site started dying because I was the most active member in said dorm.

But you all? You're here because you like something I'm making? It's so wild to me. I appreciate every single one of you. Every like, every reblog, every comment. They warm me up.

I've been thinking over the last few days what I want to do. The obvious answers—prompt fills, polls to determine what I write, story snippets—I do all that with too much regularity. And I'm trying to avoid taking on more fics as I focus on the ones I've already got going.

So we're gonna do something a bit different this week.

Over the next week (From Wed 2/21 to Wed 2/28) send me the title of one of my WIPs (listed below) and I will respond with a few paragraphs. Not my usual 1.2-1.6k that I like to do for WIP Wednesday, but a few paragraphs. At the end of the week, I'll compile them all and post everything in a single post.

I won't be adding all the links like I usually do with each addition to a story until I post that final draft, but I'll tag everything with "[story name] 1000" so you can click that and follow along with the fic in some sort of order.

Brief Story Summaries

Bring Me Home: Tim and Danny are online friends and know each other's secrets. Currently in the arc where the Young Justice and Team Phantom help Danny escape after a reveal gone wrong.

Ghost!Robin: Jason is haunted by the ghost of the Robin he used to be. Danny finds out when Jazz introduces him to Jason over a meet-the-in-laws dinner. Currently, Jason and Robin are meeting with Frostbite to learn what may have happened.

Answer My Call: Jazz is sending texts to Danny after he escaped a GIW facility and they can't talk. But it turns out Jason is the one who's actually been getting them.

Carry Your Heart: Jason and Danny meet in the Ghost Zone while Jason is dead. They become friends. But Jason runs to Desiree to wish for his life back. A wish she fulfills. Danny goes to visit him, only to find his core left behind in a lair that's in ruin.

Bad Reveal AU: Danny is living with the Waynes when he finds out they're also the Bats. He freaks out because he believes the bats are working with the government (aka the GIW). So he shoots Bruce and runs away. The bats are now trying to convince him it's safe to come home.

Empathy!Verse: Liminal!Jazz is studying in Gotham and feeling the lack of other liminals to interact with. After getting used to the undercurrent of emotion that follows all interactions with ghosts/liminals, humans just feel...flat. Then one day, she literally runs into another liminal as she's going to the library. Jason Todd. Only... he doesn't know what it means to be liminal. So Jazz is there to show him.

02/24/2025 "Fiction and Feast" Update + Small Phantom Thief AU Update

Well, we're essentially writing these together, now. Been doing the phantom thief au during my lunch/breaks at work and the vampire two-shot before bed. I find writing on my phone for the vampire two-shot does NOT get my head in the right space; need my laptop for that. Maybe I'll bring my laptop to work at some point? Been meaning to do that, anyway.

Edited another 700-ish words for "Fiction and Feast" and fucking completely restructured the dialogue lol. I was finding the intensity was zig-zagging before, not gradually increasing like I wanted it to, so now that's been fixed; I just have to connect the floating pieces, which shouldn't be terribly hard. Google Docs still says I have 1900 words left to edit, though. So I guess most of my "editing" today was writing an additional 600 goddamn words. (Editing this has been WOW very hard and long; it's because I'm taking on such a deliberate style, which is wayyy outside of my comfort zone, but hopefully it's fruitful!)

For the phantom thief au, I wrote more dialogue, yayaya. Came to a definitive about how I wanted the last conversation between Kokichi and Rantaro to conclude (was debating between a couple different options before) and drew up more banter for other sections. (Contemplations on decisions for the phantom thief au below, mostly for me to work through it lol)

I go between wanting to make the heists absolutely bat-shit insane and keeping a level of realism and I'm a little iffy on which direction to sway for Act IS. I feel Act I was pretty bonkers, but not a strain to suspend your disbelief (correct me if I'm totally terribly wrong on that, though.) I've written every single act similarly, but I wonder if I spoil the fun by getting too bogged down in what is REALISTIC. Then again, the rest of this fic is going to be pretty "realistic" (at least, I'd like to think so) so it may feel like I'm smashing two genres together if I let myself go buck-wild with the heists.

I don't know, at least not yet. I'm gonna trust my instincts and do what feels right in the moment. My insecurity likely oozes from these contemplations, but it's because I'm indecisive as fuck! So you'll probably see that from me literally this entire fic, buckle in?

With midterms wrapping up, I actually have less homework this week!! I hope to use that time to get this fucking vampire fic done, but then again I'll also be packing big-time, so we'll see. I'm just ready for the first chapter to be done already, my brain hurts every time I sit down to write it lol. But I have really really enjoyed this experiment and feel like I'll come out of it more practiced, even if God I will never ever EVER use this style with the phantom thief au, or likely any fic every again lolll. Unless there's a demand for it, which I don't anticipate. It might come off a bit pretentious tbh.

August had thought about the day he came home from the military for good a lot. He’d imagined himself leaving after a few years and transitioning into a more sedate lifestyle, maybe with Sadie by his side. He’d imagined himself going full career military and passing on a legacy of government benefits when he eventually bit the bullet. He’d imagined himself getting a hero’s funeral, remembered in pictures and funny stories until no one was around to tell them anymore.

In all his imaginings and daydreams, he’d never pictured this.

“Your recovery is coming along very well,” his assigned physical therapist told him. “Have you given any more thought to if you would prefer a prosthetic or crutches?”

“Crutches.” He’d made his choice soon after the amputation surgery. He’d seen the options and recovery schedule for a prosthetic. It was pricey, cumbersome, and something that would probably only lead to confusion and disappointment when he was wearing long pants. Crutches were cheaper and a lot more upfront about his baggage.

Crutches also meant he’d be going home sooner, but you can’t always get everything you want.

“Are you sure? We can-”

“I’m sure."

She blinked at him and nodded. “Alright. You’ll have to learn how to use them before we can release you. I’d also like to talk to your family about accommodations you might need at home. Is there a number I could call or….?”

August sighed. “My sister will be here in two hours. You can talk to her about all that.”

“Okay, we’ll do that then. Let’s just finish up your exercises and then I’ll come back to talk with your sister. Is there anything else you want to talk about?”

“No. Let’s just get this over with.”

August could do the whole exercise routine by himself at this point, but it was definitely easier with someone else helping him. Having someone to help him balance made it easier for him to keep his eyes away from the scar he was left with. The phantom pains were bad enough; the ugly stump was just another unfortunate reminder.

He really just wanted to get his crutches and get back to moving on his own again, but he knew that would be a journey. A journey he wasn’t really looking forward to.

Especially not a journey he wanted to go on with his family.

He was glad Stella had taken the mantle of dealing with all his hospital stuff. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to handle it if the rest of the family was constantly hovering around him during this. He didn’t need their sugarcoated praise or unnecessary optimism. He didn’t need Gramp’s war stories or Dad’s constant assurances that this wouldn’t change anything. He didn’t need Mawline’s smothering or Liam’s assembly line of therapists to “heal his mental state”.

He just wanted to get on with the rest of his pathetic life.

The road had been cleared before they went on it. Or, at least, they thought it was. Not that it was August’s job to worry about that. It was their Sergeant's job, or at least the drivers. He just got on the truck he was told to get on and zoned out during the drive to prevent himself from thinking too hard about their mission. He much preferred scouting to sniping, but he didn’t get to make those decisions.

He hated trips like this, but it’s what he signed up for. Literally.

Maybe he should’ve listened a little closer to his grandfather’s war stories before he committed to this. A little late to complain about it now, so he didn’t. Not to his fellow soldiers, not in his letters home, not even when he was drunk on leave. Bottling things up was the Walker Way and after a few years at it, August was a professional.

The explosion came from right under his seat. There was another one as the driver tried to regain control of the vehicle.

And then the ambush came.

August didn’t remember much after the first gunshot. He just remembered the smell of blood and the sound of someone screaming.

Later, his sergeant would commend him for his “bravery in the face of adversity”. If August hadn’t just heard that the infections in his leg wounds were too severe for the field hospital to handle and amputation was the best route, he probably would’ve punched the man.

August got a medal for his bravery. He got to shake the governor’s hand and his face was plastered on the front page of The Austin Chronicle and The Daily Texan.

The other 19 men in the truck with him died. They got no awards and their families got meager compensation. He spoke with one of the wives, tried to tell her he was sorry. She just smiled and patted his remaining leg and told him to say “hi” to his mother for her.

The more he practiced “walking”, the closer he got to going home, the more he dreaded it. He didn't want the welcome home party or the accolades of a “successful” military career. He just wanted to move on, forget how he ended up here.

But that would never happen. He could never be that lucky.

“So I did tell them you didn’t want a big party but-”

August groaned. “Just tell me how many people are going to be there.”

Stella sighed. “I managed to talk them down to Dad’s work friends. And nobody got plus ones. Oh, and Sadie will be there.”

Sadie. He hadn’t seen her since last Christmas. Knowing the first time she would see him again was like this made his stomach twist into knots.

Last time he’d seen her, they kissed under the mistletoe. It had gotten them laughs, but it made him want more.

One more tour, he’d told himself back then. Just one more and then he’d be good enough. His family would be proud of him, he could get great benefits on top of whatever job he picked up, and maybe he could finally ask her on a date. She might even say “yes”.

Fat chance of that happening now.

“I already told everyone you’ll probably be tired and you don’t need to be overwhelmed right now so the extra guests probably won’t stay for more than an hour. If you need me to, I can be the bad guy and kick everyone out early,” Stella promised.

“Thanks,” he muttered. “But I can deal. If I let them get all their hovering out of the way now, maybe they’ll chill for a bit.”

Stella snorted. “Yeah, right. Dad’s been excited to show you all the renovations they made for you and Liam really wants your opinions on his new ‘inclusive’ therapy plans for the rescue. And I’ve lost track of how many times Mawline’s asked me if I was absolutely sure you don’t have any new dietary restrictions.”

August groaned and slid down in his seat. “And they wonder why I wanted to stay at the hospital by myself….”

“You know it’s because they care about you. I know it’s clumsy and overbearing but they’re trying.”

“I know that but…. I just wish they wouldn’t make a big dal out of it.”

Stella gave him a side eye. “Auggie, you lost a leg. That’s kind of a big deal. I know you don’t want a fuss but it’s an adjustment for everyone. Just- I talk to them but you may just have to ride this out. They’ll calm down after a couple months and then you can go back to pretending this isn’t a big deal, okay?”

He sighed. She was right, to an extent. He’d had a lot longer to adjust to his new situation than his family did. And they did care, even if he didn’t appreciate the way they showed it.

“I can put up with the party for an hour and I’ll try not to rush Dad through his tour but can you ask Liam to hold off on the therapy stuff for a bit. I’m just- not ready to think about that.”

She nodded, smiling. “I can do that.”

Done with the conversation, August turned on the radio and closed his eyes, letting the music carry him away from reality for a bit. He would take any break he could get.

I've bounced this idea off of both @resident-idiot-simp and @tacticaltaxonomist so they'll both recognize the bits and pieces of this idea that I'm about to throw at your feet. But basically, what I've got is this:

Simon, John, and Kyle are childhood best friends that signed up for the army together. (Idk about elsewhere, but in the states you can sign up with your friends for a bonus, and you all get to serve together. Don't do it, but it's a thing.) They servery together, get their callsigns- Soap, Gaz, and Pretty Boy (Simon thinks he hates his stupid callsign), and eventually, Roba happens. So instead Simon going to Mexico alone, and being paired with Sparks and Washington (Ghost comics, my edgy lil heart loves them) the three amigos go together to work with the Americans, get betrayed, and captured. But woah, Roba is working in a portal to the ghost zone, wild! So Simon gets loose, goes looking for his friends, accidentally gets ghostified, and saves his friends with his new powers. They kill Roba, get home, get recruited by Price for the 141. That's the backstory. I like it. I think about it a lot.

Highlights:

GOTH/PUNK SOAP - V important. And he loves skulls, not Simon. That's just funny to me.

Base shenanigans as the boys try to keep Ghost's secret from Price

Ghost accidentally phasing through things he'd lean on

Ghost learning to do the ghost wail on accident while working with recruits and they all pass the fuck out

Ghost gaining a reputation as a hardass because recruits keep passing out (via ghost wail or ghost ray oopsies) so Soap (who loves skulls) makes him a mask to go with his reputation

Ghost with white hair and green eyes when he's a ghost, and black hair with blue eyes when he's normal. Best of both worlds!

Simon actually misses being called Pretty Boy now that he's called Ghost all the time.

Jojo x DC (or even x DP) lovers out there, where are you?

I am here to passionately proclaim my love for the concept of adding jojo things to the dpxdc crossover verse, out of pure fandom hyperfixation. Yes, I know fanfiction is niche, and crossovers are niches between two niches and a triple crossover is even nicher, so i am here to say why i think this is so interesting (if the adhd allows me)

Reason the first! In no particular order just as I'm coming up with them

The themes! Jojo's Bizarre Adventure was written as a celebration of humanity. Hell, one of the most popular openings, Great Days, has Let the voice of love take you higher as a prominent line. The Jojos are all people who are (or become) fundamentally good just people fighting against the forces of evil and saving the day. This fits perfectly with dc and dp as superhero fiction! I mean, a lot of old superhero comics and a lot of danny phantom is just villain/ghost of the week slice of life, which fits with Jojo's stand user of the week format in parts 3 and 4. The way jojo vibes with dc and dp continue into my next theme

Reason the second: the plot hooks that you can make

Imagine!! Giorno's mafia exploits making it to Gotham as he attempts to wrangle back the Falcones, maybe becoming an enemy of Batman due to his criminal connections or becoming reluctant allies with the Dark Knight as a noble mafia boss with powerful connections. Imagine the interactions with jason as a fellow gang leader with a heart of gold and a seething hatred for the drug trade against children!!! You could even throw in some cool interactions between Gold Experience, the stand that creates life, and Jason Todd, the man who died and was brought back! Who says it has to be Gotham? There are plenty of other places in DC with gang problems, like, i dunno, bludhaven?

And that's just giorno with gotham! What if Jonathan Joestar's archaeological findings turned into inspiration for Jack and Janet Drake's globe-trotting adventures, creating a complicated relationship between the man from the late 19th century and current 21st century lonelly child Tim Drake. What if the Drakes brought something back that they shouldn't like... say... a stone mask? or a Stand arrow? A fragment piece of Sugar Mountain Spring, or perhaps a sword that carried a Stand by the name of Anubis? IMAGINE!!!!

Howabout Jolyne's prison break story intersecting with another prison break plot, like the one in Young Justice, or where she and the part 6 crew see the transfer of a villain from another show? HELL GIVE ME A JOLYNE X LIVEWIRE CROSSOVER!!!

And the main villain's stand in part 7, Funny Valentine's Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap (or D4C for short) can cross the barriers between dimensions. DUDE. IMAGINE A PLOT WHERE HE STUMBLES INTO THE GHOST ZONE AND GAINS ALLIES THERE TOO

And there are so, so many more! Josuke going to university in Metropolis, Josuke or Giorno becoming healers that get underestimaed until their Stands' incredible power and their skill at using them saves the day, Jotaro running into variuos different heroes on his hunt for the stand arrows, Speedwagon's children being part of the big rich people social circles with bruce wayne, lex luthor and oliver queen

And that's not getting into the DP side! Ghosts and Stands are canonically on the same wavelength, so Danny would have the unique trait of being able to see and attack Stands, which is a massive boon. You could do plots where the GiW are at odds with the Speedwagon Foundation's peaceful goals, or stories where ghosts and stand users have a shared origin in ectoplasm!

These three are action stories with great characters and plotlines and really cool powers and you can do so much with them. You don't even have to stick to the 100 year+ timeline of Jojo. There are plenty of AUs where all main jojos live together in the same era. Give me Funny valentine vs lex luthor for president, some supervillain on supervillain action!

Look, most people know Jojo for the memes and the silly outfits and the absurd stand fights, and I love it too, but I think the story and characters of Jojo deserve a critical look and appreciation just as much as the aesthetics and silliness. And besides, it can't really top the ridiculousness of the silver age. Once you dig under the surface, all of these characters have so much richness, which leaves me with the last point

Reason the third: the characters

specifically, Araki has traditionally struggled to balance out his character writing and focus. Over time he improved, to the point where part 8 is a character-driven masterpiece of a mystery story in its first half, and part 9 is already incredible in all regards. Of course, that means that a lot of characters get underutilised or underexplored in the earlier parts, and you know what?

That's ok, because we have fanfiction! Exploring underexplored characters is like. The thing fanfiction is for! We can explore all kinds of jojo characters' mentalities and struggles and then match them up with dpxdc characters who might help them or share their pain. Jolyne's struggles with her dad who's a good guy but left her for years? There are dc characters with daddy issues LINING UP BABY. Josuke trying to handle the responsibility of protecting morioh after his neglect resulted in his grandpa's death? Danny fenton can relate! There is so much potential here i am begging you to see it like i am!!

Castaway AU Post Rain Scene

Kara returns to National City. She needs distance from Lena, and proximity to Alex, as she struggles to feel... anything. The bone deep ache she feels could be the loss of Lena and whatever future they might have had, but is identical to the chill of the phantom zone.

Part of her expects--hopes-- that Lena will come after her, and reinsert herself in Kara's orbit. Instead, she finds someone else standing in her parking lot one night a few weeks later.

"James," she greets quietly.

She doesn't know how to react to this man, this father and husband who seems far wiser than she last saw him.

James offers a thin smile. "Kara." Then his eyes crinkle warmly. "I'm glad you're okay."

Okay is relative, but Kara understand his meaning, and gives a close-lipped smile in return. "Thanks."

They both fall quiet, the unspoken conflict between them weighing heavily in the air. Kara knows what she should say: she'll stay away, she'll leave them be. She knows what James wants to say: to leave them alone, stay away--

"Be careful with her," James says.

Kara looks at him, searching for warning. All she finds is concern.

"I don't know what you mean--"

"Yes, you do," James asserts.

Kara's mouth opens robotically. "I'll stay away--"

"Stay away? I don't want you to stay away, Kara."

"You-- you don't?"

"No!" James exclaims. "I want you to come over for Christmas dinner. I want you to visit just because. I want you to meet our kids! Do you know how excited they are to finally see their Aunt Kara?"

Kara blinks. "You told them about me?"

"You've always been a part of our family, even when you were gone."

Confusion pulls at Kara. "Then what do you mean...?"

James sighs quietly. "Lena almost killed herself trying to bring you back. When she couldn't... it tore her apart. She wasn't-- she wasn't living anymore."

Guilt twists in Kara's belly, dark and acrid. She never wanted that for Lena. She'd hoped for-- dreamed of-- rescue, of course she did, but not at the expense of anyone's wellbeing.

"For years, it was all she did, even after the rest of us gave up hope. And we couldn't bear to stop her, until..."

James never gives voice to the tipping point. But Kara can see in his eyes that whatever it was, it had taken a long time to work their way clear of the destruction.

"She finally found her way back to happiness. It's never been perfect without you, but she found a way to exist in her own way." James gazes at her with regret and compassion both. "And now that you're back..."

He's afraid she'll upset the balance, Kara realizes. Perhaps she already has.

"If you're going to be back, I need you to be back for good," James continues. "I need you to not run away. I need you to love Lena as much as you always have, and as much as she loves you. If you don't..."

Kara waits, and James can only sigh.

"I don't know if she'll be able to come back this time."

Tears burn at Kara's eyes. This time, there is no rain to hide them as she blinks them away, only to fail as they roll down her cheeks. For so long she's been alone, and cold. After learning the new world she's come back to, she expected to stay that way forever. Yet here James is, inviting her into the warmth of his family.

Lena's family.

She nods, swallowing to clear her throat.

"I promise."

Thoughts on a Bioshock (but only the original and 2, I don't like any of the infinite characters enough to include that game) x Danny Phantom crossover.

With the basic premise being that ADAM slugs are naturally occurring liminal (as defined by Phanon) animals, and the area Rapture is built on (their native range) is a natural thin spot in reality.

ADAM as a substance is some percentage of ectoplasm (not all of it, around 15% if I had to give a number) by mass, that's how it does stuff like give people superpowers, and can pass memories from one person to another when recycled.

But none of the scientists in Rapture had any idea about that, because they don't know ectoplasm exists, and none of their instraments can pick up on it anyways. Not helped by the fact that it can't really be perceived by non-liminal beings under typical circumstances anyways.

Liminals however can perceive it's presence by the fact that they can see it glow.

Yes I am implying that both of the Bioshock protagonists (and the Little Sisters) are liminal, which I think is totally realistic considering what I've already established for the crossover.

I mean, Jack is an artificially speed grown super soldier, who was actively being modified and experimented on his entire childhood. To the point that when splicing as much as he wants, he exhibits no mental or physical deterioration the way 99% of splicers do.

Delta was necromancied back to life by his daughter via science, after having been dead for a literal decade.

The Little Sisters are literally immortal until the ADAM slug they host is destroyed or ripped from their bodies. Upon which they die unless being given the cure Tenenbaum made.

Not to mention Sophia Lamb was trying to use ADAM to essentially create a demi-god, or at least some kind of pseudo divine being. Creating a mad monstrosity out of Gil Alexander, and then performing the same experiment on her own daughter Eleanor.

I don't know. Phandom's ideas about how ectoplasm exposure to the point of turning a living being liminal, and how ADAM affects the people of Rapture are pretty similar.

Except ADAM canonically has way more negative side effects than most AUs about liminality tend to have ecto exposure causing.

But one must also consider that ADAM isn't just ecto and has other components (meaning it's not pure), and that it was literally being created in living breathing children, and also recycled from corpses to then be made into new drugs and sold back to the people of Rapture.

So all that is probably responsible for a lot of the negative side effects. I mean Tenenbaum discovered it because dock workers in Rapture were basically rubbing their injuries with ADAM slugs they caught, and none of them had any side effects other than their wounds healing.

Now I'm not saying I made this AU so Ghost Delta could reunite with Eleanor after going through an odyssey in the Ghost Zone that parallels his journey to reunite with her in Bioshock 2...

But I won't deny that that's the first story idea that popped into my head when thinking of the crossover.
