Excerpt from what would be season 2 of Daybreak.

Warning for horror elements and possibly body horror.

Singing. He realised with a start. That's what it was. The deceptively comforting voice, long, drawn-out notes that echoed off the cobble stone walls. A song. A lullaby. One he recognised. One that sent a shiver rolling down his spine.

Abby stopped crying for a moment, loosening the death grip she held on his cape. "What is that?" she whispered, leaning in. Dante frowned, glaring over his shoulder. He though that was where the voice was coming from- somewhere behind him. Reverberating off the walls of the tunnel, racketing into his already pounding skull.

Only two other people could know that song- neither of them were supposed to be alive anymore. His heart caught at the idea- his father, long dead, longer than any other member of his family, a siren. The reason he had to hide for so long, the reason his brother despised him, the reason he had to flee his home to begin with.

Or his brother. Gene. Drawing a shaky breath, he pried away from the trio of children that held onto him. His own kids, Dmitri and Naoki, tried to hold onto him, while Abby stepped away, hands shaking as she watched the tunnel past his shoulders.

"Stay behind me." he ordered, voice dry, sharper than he intended. Abby put herself in front of the toddlers, just thirteen years old, and so incredibly brave, brandishing the dagger Katelyn had given her.

Dante drew one of his own crimson scimitars from the sheathes on his back, watching the hallway with narrowed eyes. The catacombs were nearly pitch dark, faint orange light given by the embers of torches mounted to the walls providing no assistance.

The song continued, so painfully familiar. It couldn't be them, he swore it couldn't. Why hide? Why hide? Why run from home? Come stay, be safe, little darling ones.

It haunted his memories- all the fleeting happy moments from his childhood. Few and far between and long faded, now coming back to that familiarly haunted melody.

A light flickered at the farthest end of the tunnel, where it curved away. White and pale, shifting with an unsteady movement. No torch made a light like that. No mortal being sang like that. As a low, grating laugh cut the music short, the reflection of crimson caught against the approaching light.

A pale webbed hand curled around the stonework. Elongated claws on each of four digits drew thin white lines against the grey. A second hand landed hard on the ground, hauling along a body too big for the narrow tunnels, crawling on its hands and feet.

A head followed it, matted blue-black curls pushed away from an eyeless face. Severed at the jaw by a manged grin, too many jagged teeth growing in roes through a hollow skull. White lights danced in front of its face. Shadows enshrouded a body too thin, the right arm- chest- ribs exposed- bare of skin, dark blackened bones, scorched beyond repair.

It lumbered the corner, gripping the walls, leaving white scratches against the dark stones. And stains of deep crimson, prints of past victims- or of its own ichor. Its head snapped up audibly. Dante jumped, tightening his grip on the hilt of his blade.

The thing cackled. The shadows that coiled around it seemed to laugh as well, flickering and dancing and shifting like tangled serpents. It dropped to one knee, staring unseeing at Dante, its smile widening, tearing up to its finned ears, black and red and viscous ichor running down its jaw.

The empty socket in its half-covered skull cracked- split apart above and below to its jaw- a bloodshot eyeball rolled forwards, a teal iris fixing on him.

"I knew it was you." its voice echoed through the hallways, gravelly and broken- damaged by smoke and ash. And horribly familiar in a way that made Dante's heart stop.

Gene grinned wider still, leaning forwards and upwards, drawing as high as the ceiling would allow. Digging bloodied and skinless hands into the walls and roof, looming above the cowering guard. Hunched in the arched ceiling of the tunnels, dripping black and red blood to the ground, he chuckled.

"Hello again, baby brother."

Dante has a Time in season 2.

Naoki is Nekoette. And that's Abby as in Jeffory the Golden Heart's daughter. She's three when he died (pre-timeskip) and the time skip is only ten(ish) years in Daybreak, so she's about thirteen/fourteen when this would happen.

It might not happen at all, but it was an idea, and I wanted to write something, so here ya go.

I'm not a good judge of how good my writing is so please give feedback (nicely please, I'm sensitive)

I understand it’s your rewrite but I strongly dislike how people wrote that Nicole no longer see her kid anymore. Like completely.

Don’t you guys understand how much she loves her kid? She doesn’t want him to misbehave or even stole stuff that isn’t theirs. Dimitri is probably the only family she even HAS now, whereabouts of her father are unknown but knowing she the new Lord of Scaleswind you can infer so.. or either he’s just very elderly. As her fox, Roxy mostly likely pass away within those 15 years. I’ll say it’s cruel to leave her alone as she was trying her best raising her kid. She has good intentions. Calling MCD Nicole a child abuser, cmon now.. did you remember how much Dimitri looks up to her? He stated he wants to be like a “strong warrior” like his mother and how he wants train more as well to protect. He sees her mother as inspiration knowing how she stop the Phoenix War. I just arghhh

Do you think Dimitri (in Mcd) would grow up with some mental issues after realising his parents are separated/not in love and are not like his friends parents?

Speaking as a child of divorce (my parents split when I was really little so I’ve never really known them together) he probably would but I don’t think they’d be PTSD level.

In my personal experience, I grew up with just a mom. My dad was never there and when he was I was ignored and treated like shit. He never cared or made an effort, Ive always known that.

Dmitri however, has a good father who loves him and wants to be a part of his life. Though Dante was absent for the first 6 years, it wasn’t his fault and I believe Dmitri will grow up understanding that and not blaming him. If he were to blame anyone I think it’d be Nicole.

Nicole knew, and did nothing to bring them together for 6 years. She actively avoided it. Though Dmitri loves his mother so much, I think he’ll always kind of resent her for that. Not to mention the fact that she’s lowkey physically abusive…

Imagine: The broken streets of Phoenix Drop are a cold and desolate, but every so often, you'll see a garish pop of color. Sometimes they're peeking out, curious about the new "customer." Sometimes they're following Nekoette, who treats them more like little sisters than the magical constructs they are. Either way, it serves as a reminder; That not all has changed, and not all has been lost.

I think Nicole being a poor parent to Dmitri is actually pretty interesting ngl (aside from the physical abuse..). Not in a support women's wrongs way but like, I think if it was written in a better way it would've worked so much better and wouldn't be a complaint people have about Nicole's character.

Like, her treatment of Dmitri stemming from something that he can't even control, looking like his father Dante, Nicole starting to project onto him because she can't stand being reminded of her past lover that she still loves but isn't there, the resentment of having moved on so quick from what they had. as long as she looks at Dmitri it's just something she can't move past because of her own selfish action of refusing to face Dante or anyone in Phoenix Drop because she doesn't want to let go of what once was .. i love mommy issues and messy people yum.

Dimitri is a very active kid, he enjoys karate and the occasional game of soccer. When not in school he spends a lot of time at his mom’s gym, and is her biggest cheerleader during her boxing matches. They have a pretty good relationship, Nicole is pretty hands off with him, and he appreciates the independence, but it leads to him being pretty disrespectful the few times Nicole has had to go mom mode on him

Dante and Nicole dated in high school, where Nicole accidentally got pregnant. Dante did the best he could to help out, but they eventually decided they should go their separate ways. Dante hasn’t seen Dimitri since he was around 2.

When Dimitri got a bit older and Dante got settled with KC, Nicole and Dante decided try more of a coparenting situation. Dimitri was apprehensive at first, but quickly became friends with Naoko. After that, bonding with Dante and KC came pretty quickly.

When first meeting her, Naoko was as much of a girly girl as a person could be. Princess dresses, tea parties, dolls, the works, all of which she begged Dimitri to do with her. This was embarrassing at first, but he eventually got used to it.

One day Dimitri showed her his videogames, and she immediately hyper fixated on them, quickly matching and eventually surpassing her brother’s skill. She enjoys the cute little farming sims but is equally into more combat based games.

Imagine this sweet little seven year old suddenly dropping into professional gamer speak

Videogames quickly become their favorite bonding activity, as it’s something they enjoy equally !

Season 3 Designs

Dimitri (12) and Naoko (9)

I wanted to keep their basic armor vaguely matching, but not just pink and blue copies like the og skins. Since Naoko showed interest in the bow and arrow I gave her a lot of ranger inspired details, with the hood piece and leather bracers. I kept her outfit practical but still a bit femme, despite her serious expression here she’s still very much a little kid who likes pink and flowers.

For Dimitri I wanted him to have pieces of both of his parents. So he has some samurai inspired tunic and shoulder plates like Dante and arm wrappings like Nicole. And while in season 2 he uses his dads old katanas, in season 3 he’s switched to his own pair of short swords, he kind of wanted his own thing rather than copying his dad.

They’re mostly trained by Katelyn, with some occasional lessons with Dante. The art is definitely a bit misleading, they’re far from cool and composed warriors at this point. But they love training together, and are both eager to learn.

You know what branch of musical instruments was desperately missing from my last post? Percussion!!

-Katelyn insists that learning an instrument is a waste of time, that it won't help her in the long run, and that carrying the damn thing around is too inconvenient. What she doesn't realize is that Travis has listened to all of her excuses and when he puts a small wooden drum in her hand he goes into every detail about why she should learn to play it.

-It's small and lightweight, easy to carry around. Doesn't require too much time to get pretty decent at it. She can chose to get really advanced, or just learn how to play simple beats so she can keep time. It exercises her hands without her needing to spar. At this point there's no reason Katelyn has to protest.

-And Garroth isn't skipped out either! At this point Travis is just turning the entire party into his band and he's not letting anyone get out of it. Eventually he settles on giving Garroth a tambourine because it's very easy to play and low effort so Garroth can't bitch about it being a nuisance.

-Honestly Garroth doesn't mind at all when he gets to sit around the fire with everyone and see Vylad with their scarf pulled down and a smile on their face.

-I feel like despite being more of a beginner, Laurance knows the most songs out of everyone (except Zoey but she has an unfair advantage). Laurance is such a fucking theater kid I won't ever shut up about this, he has read so many epics, and tragedies, and poems, and plays, and whatever he could get his hands on in Meteli. And that includes reading songbooks and learning love songs.

-Fuck it, shove a guitar into Dante's hands that he started learning from Logan as a way to help relieve his stress and keep his posture better. Dante at first uses it to try and rizz up Nicole (this song always makes me think of Nicole like it's literally her theme music), and it absolutely works. But after the two have their falling out Dante isn't sure if he wants to keep playing.

-Until he realizes that if he keeps practicing the guitar he can play songs with Nana and that's just delightful.

-I like to think that because her instrument sits on her shoulder Nana is able to dance around a lot while she's playing. Like the girl cannot keep her feet still, she's got the dance fever.

-Phoenix Drop literally has so many parties and celebrations where there's just like. music in the background. Imagine if characters were playing those songs!! There's little imperfections here and there because Laurance still doesn't know how to play certain chords properly, Brendan isn't used to playing with others so he gets thrown off a bit. Zoey is the absolute chad of these because she's literally been around for almost a thousand years at this point, she has played so many songs with so many people.

-Zoey actually knows how to play any string instrument you can put into her hands. Like a seventh sense. She just sticks to the harp because she doesn't want to make all the mortals around her feel like they can't live up to her. She loves playing with her friends.

-WAIT A DAMN MINUTE Kiki bringing Leona over to Brendan's so she can spend some time with him and he starts teaching her to play guitar? It's difficult at first, but eventually she figures out how to use her little wolf claws as proper finger picks that make her better than he is sometimes and he's only mildly upset by this.

-Natsumi (Nana and Dante's kid) grows up hearing her parents play music and wants to do it too. She can't decide if she wants to play guitar or violin more, until Dmitri is in the picture (more on him in a later paragraph). When Dmitri says he wants to play the guitar, Natsumi immediately starts badgering her mother to teach her how to play the violin. She knows that the happiest they've ever looked is when they're playing together, and she wants to make everyone else that happy too!

-I don't think Nicole is much of a musician unfortunately. She's got a beautiful singing voice, but she doesn't sing enough. She hasn't really had freedom for most of her life, and she didn't have the free time to learn an instrument once she did get control of her life. But she likes listening to Dante stumble through the beginner phase of learning the guitar.

-Dmitri doesn't express an interest in music until after the first time he went to Phoenix Drop without Nicole's permission. She knows. She knows exactly why he has the sudden interest, and she doesn't want to say yes, but she doesn't have it in her to stifle him the same way she was stifled. So she finds one of her guards who knows how to play it that can teach Dmitri when he's in Scaleswind.

-And when he's in Phoenix Drop or on the Alliance Island, Dmitri learns how to play from Dante, Brendan, or Aaron. Even Logan gives him a few pointers. When Dmitri comes back he has a dedicated interest and starts asking to go to the library so he can find songbooks.

-Completely of his own will Dmitri starts talking to other guards and members of the Scaleswind public to find someone who knows how to play violin so he can practice with them. He wants to be good so he and Natsumi can play together and sound good and make everyone happy :)

-I'm gonna fucking sob over that last one what the fuck. WAIT AARON SEEING THIS HAPPEN IN REAL TIME AND THINKING ABOUT HIS FAMILY?? And it's a bitter sweet feeling because he misses Lily and Jacob so much it physically hurts, but Nana and Dante look so happy when they're together and ashghfgfghfhdg

-Aaron and Natsumi playing together when Dmitri is gone because she wants to practice and get good so she can impress him when they see each other again :)

-I'm literally screaming sobbing rolling on the floor crying right now this is so fucking cute

if it wasn't incredibly obvious I'm a musician myself and this is so personal and so real to me I'm fighting the urge to make a playlist of songs that the mcd characters would play and I'M LOSING

Born when Dante and Nicole were still in high school, Dmitri was raised primarily by his dad and grandmother for early years of his life. After his dad got full custody of him, Dante and Dmitri, alongside Dante’s girlfriend, Nana, would move into a house together. He has a younger half-sister in Miiko, and sees Nana as his mom given his biological mother’s low contact with him.
