Eric Levitz at Vox:
Democrats have been raining cash on their presidential nominee like it’s confetti. Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign raised $204 million in July — more than four times the $48 million former President Donald Trump brought in, according to new filings with the Federal Election Commission. This was enough to erase the Republican nominee’s previous cash advantage; at the start of August, Harris had $220 million in cash on hand, while Trump held just $151 million. Official data on August fundraising has yet to be released. But there’s reason to believe that Harris’s money advantage grew last month, due in part to the Democratic National Convention. According to the Democrat’s campaign, it raised $540 million in the first six weeks since President Joe Biden handed off the nomination.
Yet this torrential downpour of campaign cash hasn’t trickled down the Democratic ballot: Even as Harris has begun outraising Trump, the Republican committee responsible for funding GOP state legislative candidates has amassed far more money than its Democratic counterpart. From January 2023 through the second quarter of this year, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) — the body tasked with electing Democratic state legislators — had raised $35 million, according to the committee. Over the same period, its GOP rival, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), had raised $62 million. Those figures do not include the fundraising of party-aligned outside groups that focus on state legislative races. In recent years, progressive organizations such as The States Project and Forward Majority have spent large sums on state-level races. It’s possible that when super PACs are taken into account, the GOP loses its apparent cash advantage. Then again, there are also conservative outside groups, such as Americans For Prosperity Action, that invest in down-ballot elections. What we know for sure is that, when it comes to the parties themselves, Republicans are outraising Democrats in the fight for statehouses. That fight is often neglected by the national spotlight — but it can have profound implications for Americans’ daily lives.
The Harris campaign appears to be conscious of its party’s down-ballot challenges. This week, it transferred $2.5 million of its own funds to the DLCC. Yet that largesse scarcely narrows the RSLC’s cash advantage. Ultimately, only Democratic donors can ensure that the GOP enjoys no down-ballot edge. Given blue America’s current enthusiasm and engagement, this should be possible — at least, if liberals come to appreciate the high stakes, and low cost, of winning state legislative races.
Dear Democrats: please prioritize state legislative races, especially in competitive states, as you get a lot more bang for your buck than the Presidential or Congressional races.

Beware of the MAGA Republican Gestation Police!
The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the GOP US Supreme Court made reproductive freedom a state responsibility – for now.
Pay more attention to your state government and especially the state legislature.
Find out exactly who is representing you in your state capital.
Find Your Legislators Look your legislators up by address or use your current location.
If you're represented by Republicans, work to defeat them by supporting the Democratic candidates for your districts. Contact your county or state Democratic Party to find out how. Involvement in legislative races is an excellent way to get your feet wet in political activity. It's very grass roots.
If you're represented in the legislature by pro-choice Dems – then cool! You can still support a group dedicated to electing more Democrats to state legislatures.

Doing a mail-in vote and for the more local stuff, it does feel a little disheartening to see "No candidate" under the democrat or even independent option, leaving only one unopposed republican option. Is there a way to work towards change for stuff like this, or is it just something we have to sit there and take?
when it comes to politics there's always something you can do.
Any ways, yes this problem has been disheartening Democrats in red areas for many years, but you'll be happy to hear people are working to fix it. For the first time ever the DNC has been able to fund support to every single state party, all of them from Alaska to Wyoming. Much of this will be focused on long term party building goals to break Republican super majorities in Red states to allow Dems to get a voice in states like Idaho, or Missouri where they've been locked out and Republicans have had their own way totally for years.
One part of the problem is just what you're talking about, failure to field any Democratic candidates some times even for close or winnable seats, sometimes for seats where a majority of voters voted Biden but there were no Democrats running for State Rep/Senate.
Florida's Dems have really gotten out in front of this, for the first time in 30 years, there's a Democrat running in EVERY Florida state House seat and other state parties are catching up
everyone should check out the DLCC who's job it is to fight for state level Dems
As for what you can do? well past signing up to volunteer for the DLCC if there isn't any local candidate near you, I'd say check out Run For Something, its an organization that focuses on supporting young first time candidates running for state and local office, they've made a big push on school boards to counter Moms for Liberty. They also like to support candidates who are running where Democrats don't normally run, I've made a lot of calls for them over the years and remember one women who was the first Democrat elected to her city council in 120 years. You might not get to talk to anyone running in your area, but maybe you can help fix the problem for someone else by supporting someone running for local office in a Red area
and finally look up your local Democrats and join. Every local Democratic Party has a "candidate recruitment" Committee or officer who try to talk community leaders into putting themselves out there and running for office. Running for even local office is hard and scary and largely an unknown for most people. If you can help build up a local party that'll have their back, more people will take the risks, and will do better for having a ready to go network of support rather than just winging it on their own. You can be the person in the room insisting that the party find someone to run for every office, if not you who? if not now when? etc.

To take back the country from climate-denying, abortion-forbidding, homophobic religious fanatics, we need to quit ignoring state governments. State legislatures in particular deserve far more of our attention. It's such attention which has helped flip legislative chambers in the past couple of years in states like Virginia, Michigan, and Minnesota.
In Florida this week a Democrat flipped a seat in a special election for the state House of Representatives. Although the Florida legislature still has a gerrymandered GOP supermajority in both chambers, the Republican defeat comes a day after the poor showing by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the Iowa caucuses.
Florida Democrats kicked off the new year with a major victory as businessman and Navy veteran Tom Keen flipped a Republican-held seat in the state House―a development that represents Gov. Ron DeSantis' second electoral humiliation in the span of 24 hours. Keen defeated his Republican rival, Osceola County School Board member Erika Booth, 51-49 in Tuesday's special election for the 35th House District, a constituency in the Orlando suburbs that Joe Biden carried 52-47. The Democrat will succeed Republican Fred Hawkins, whom Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed in June to serve as president of South Florida State College despite lacking any background in higher education. Republicans will hold an 84-36 supermajority in the state House as well as a similarly lopsided edge in the state Senate, so Keen's victory won't jeopardize the party's iron grip on state government. But Sunshine State Democrats are hoping that this win, which comes less than a year after the party flipped control of the mayor's office in Jacksonville, will give them another chance to convince Biden's reelection campaign and other deep-pocketed organizations that this longtime swing state is still winnable. Former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who stumped for Keen over the weekend, is making the same argument as she tries to persuade national Democrats that her campaign against Republican Sen. Rick Scott is worth investing in. She's linked the two races in arguing that Floridians "can’t afford to pay their bills" thanks to "the failed policies" that began while Scott was governor.
WFTV offers this bit of analysis about Democrat Tom Keen's victory.
Digging into the numbers shows Keen overperformed with non-party affiliated voters, winning roughly 65% of the NPA vote, enough to overcome a raw vote lead in the race where Republicans cast some 900 more votes in the contest. Keen also overperformed in Orange County, where he beat Booth by 1,859 votes.
If you're thinking about getting a little more active in politics, becoming a volunteer for a local Democratic candidate for state legislature is an excellent place to begin.
Check to see who currently represents you in the legislature.
Find Your Legislators Look your legislators up by address or use your current location.
If you are represented by Republicans, contact your county or state Democratic Party and ask them who to get in touch with. You might also try contacting the DLCC.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee - Elect State Dems
If we need to take back the country one legislative seat at a time then we'd better get started right now.
