one of the reasons I dislike s*ucky other then the shippers is cuz u can tell the filmmakers and fans stole the “bitch” “jerk” thing from the winchesters and made it “punk” “jerk” instead and it’s still intolerable from either looollllll
JFKDLAJFLDKSJFD i did notice that yeah. idk if or how commonly that interaction is used in other media, but the first time i heard dean and sam say that my mcu-sleeper agent brain definitely took note
#mcu#spn#anon#signed sealed delivered#fave part was during the djinn episode when dean is in his dreamworld (v3 TONY PARALLEL???) where sam isn't a hunter#and dean says bitch and sam's like 🥺🥺🥺 why did you call me a bitch??

Dean and Mary | SPN 2.20
Some thoughts about this scene under the break...
There's so much to unpack in this episode. I love how the story progressively reveals clues that this djinn-induced fantasy is not an ideal wish world: John's death, references to Dean being an alcoholic cad, the spectre of the young woman imprisoned by the djinn, Dean and Sam's estrangement, and the deaths of all the people they had saved as hunters.
Dean's seeming alcoholism is a handy plot device to keep others from questioning his odd behavior. And, especially with JDM not guest starring, I understand that John's death is a convenient way to explain his absence, and the story would naturally move on to the other plot points. His death is downplayed since it's natural instead of supernatural.
But while there may have been practical reasons to tell the story this way, as a fan invested heavily in Dean and John's relationship, I do find Dean's (as scripted: "that's great" !!) reaction surprisingly unbothered. Given that till now we've seen Dean wanting the family to be together at all costs, it's interesting to me that here with his Mom alive and presiding over his safe and happy home, he doesn't seem to miss John being present at all, or worried that Mary is alone. It gives me a lot of headcanon fodder, especially since in later seasons they show that Mary and John's relationship was at times rocky. This world was formed by the wish of Dean's inner child, a desire for a time before he lost unconditional love and safety, and how fascinating to find that John isn't in it.

Thinking about Charlie and Dean in Pac-Man Fever.
That Charlie, the seemingly regular and geeky girl has her own whole complicated past and a string of alias and is carrying her own core of sadness, like the Winchesters. The way she mirrors Dean in some ways in this episode—both of them find joy and pursue fun among the sadness and monster hunting, both of them are geeky, both have a certain self-confidence, and try to maintain personas, both are very empathetic and loving and make friends easily while at the same time being guarded and confide more deeply only in a few people.
Charlie, trapped in her djinn dream, uses fighting the vampires to hide from her real fear which is about her mom dying, which mirrors how Dean at times uses hunting to not have to deal with his innermost fears, or a way to cope with the pain. Charlie in the real world at first used hacking in that way, getting into trouble when she was still a minor. As an adult she finds healthy escapes—the role playing, her interest in genre. Then encounters Sam and Dean and learns that monsters are real, and chooses to enter the hunting world. Maybe it’s her way of dealing with the grief, in part, but it’s more than that and she isn’t the same and Sam and Dean. Sam and Dean didn’t have much choice about how they got into it—both were pulled in as children, trained by their father, taught it was the one true and righteous path to take. That is their origin story, even if as adults they have more agency and choose to stay in, but how they got there does matter. While Charlie makes a choice as an adult.
The supernatural isn’t what ripped her family apart, it was a drunk driver. So there’s no childhood indoctrination in her case, or the supernatural directly shattering her family, but there is trauma, because her family was shattered, she does use it to deal with her grief, and for her it’s also a call to adventure. She doesn’t idealize it or pretend it’s not dangerous. Her initial reaction to hunting is sensible—she gets hurt and she’s rightfully scared. Charlie’s decision to enter the world of hunting is something she does with pragmatism and she feels a pull to help people, to do something about the monsters, which is the satisfaction Dean gets from hunting, despise the horrific personal costs. Saving people, hunting things.
Dean’s gentleness and empathy and how nurturing he is shows, as he teaches Charlie about hunting, and looks after her like a big brother. Dean’s anguish when he and Sam realize Charlie is trapped in the djinn dream and she could die. The way he tucks his chin on the top of her head when he’s holding Charlie when she cried and he closes his eyes. The way he hugs her goodbye at the end of the episode, cups her head with his big hand and kisses the top of her head. I love that Charlie tells Dean she loves him, simply and calmly, and he just says “I know.” Yeah it’s a Han Solo reference, but Dean and Charlie aren’t meant to parallel Han and Leia’s relationship. The relevant takeaway is we know he loves Charlie back, and that Dean doesn’t use those words. He shows his love in other ways for the people he loves (for all different kinds of love).
The last scene of Charlie reading The Hobbit to her mom is among spn’s most poignant moments.

also absolutely LOVE the fact that the episode we learn Ramble On (tied with Traveling Riverside Blues) is Dean’s favorite song is the episode where we first meet Chuck. The episode Chuck first writes himself into the story.
And now it’s in the episode where Dean basically does the OPPOSITE for this alternate version of his parents. He hands them all the tools they need to protect themselves from ever being used by the universe again. He FREED them from the cosmic narrative.
The Colt, which is a gun, but also a key. More like an insurance policy here. And Dean’s journal where he conveyed such important knowledge as “driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole” lol.
Because we also know now why some of the monster lore in that universe failed to match up with what we knew from spn prime. It was a different universe all along-- different Loki, different Rowena, different djinn, different vampires... all of it. It was little hints all along, but never anything big enough that we all cried foul (because who would’ve watched at all if we were told from the drop that these were not the characters we knew already?). It doesn’t matter now, we love them for THEM now.
Dean wrote himself into their story, just a little bit. And like Chuck he used an alias lol (James Hetfield... boy are john and mary gonna be weirded out in about nine years when the first Metallica album drops...)
But unlike Chuck, he did it because he wanted them to be HAPPY. To have a chance to NOT get caught up in the bigger wheels of the universe. To make their OWN choices and live their OWN lives! And he didn’t WANT to make it more complicated for them!
He’s like... the Anti-Chuck? As Storyteller? And I love that for him.
and I really, really hope he has more stories to tell us. more of Chuck’s problems to undo, finally, because I don’t know that Dean can ever truly be at peace until he does

what are your favorite dean episodes (doesnt matter if its objectively a dean-centered episode or if you just liked him in it specially)
Hi hi! Thanks so much for the ask!
So, I'm an early seasons Dean girlie (and late seasons Sam girlie) all the way. I love Dean especially when he's prickly and vulnerable, when the threat is way too big for him but he steps up anyway because someone's gotta do it and he's there.
I'm old fashioned and my favorite reading of spn is the one where Sam and Dean (and Cas) are troubled but heroic. Where their job is necessary if awful and they really are Saving People by Hunting Things TM. Everything everyone (including me) says in critique of this reading--especially that it's horrifyingly racist--is true, and I enjoy that kind of critique and think it's important. But as a fantasy version of emergency services--which I worked in on and off first as an EMT and then as a nurse for most of my career--spn resonates for me and makes me nostalgic in a way that none of the more realistic serial dramas about firefighters or cops or whatever ever have. There's an emotional rawness to how Dean especially approaches his job in the early seasons that I just adore. Sam is my hero because of his big world-saving sacrifices and his boundless kindness and willingness to forgive, but Dean is my hero because he gets out there every day and does the work and makes the best of it.
So unsurprisingly given all that, my favorite Dean episode is What Is and What Should Never Be. I love how thrilled Dean is to quit, how happy he is to mow the lawn, and how even his and Sam's distance and himself being an alcoholic loser (dating a nurse lol) is an acceptable price for a different universe where he and Sam aren't burdened with the fate of saving people and all the sacrifices it entails.
And then, I love how even though it breaks his heart, the real him is who he is and in the end he'll always pick that--always make those sacrifices and have that courage, and even the pretend Sam in his head will be there for him to be his real self and follow him into the dark. And that it's exactly that strength of character and the subconscious understanding that actually Sam is there for him that saves him. Also the whump of him being bled out in the djinn's lair is delicious.
Of course almost everyone loves WIAWSNB because its objectively just an excellent episode, but in a trashier, more problematic version of this, my second pick is Sam, Interrupted.
I love that in the 'real' spn world when Dean ends up in 'real' therapy with Mia Vallens, the shifter therapist, he hates it and is as obstructive to the therapeutic process as it's possible to be, but for the pretend psychiatrist in his head in Sam, Interrupted, he's actually very emotionally intelligent, and understands and humorously diagnoses his own problems; he just can't fix them. This seems completely realistic and hashtag relatable to me and true to his character. I just adore how when she asks him how many people he has to save before he's okay, he says "all of them". It's so funny and delivered with such a light touch as an answer to the impossible existential question of what to do about other people's suffering. It feels so hopeless, and yet Dean's real true answer--despite understanding and accepting how insanely impossible it is--is still to get out there every day and keep trying. Incredible strength, humbleness, self-reflection, humor, and courage.
Other favorite episodes that have scenes with that same feel: Dean's confrontation with Lucifer in The End, the scene in In the Beginning where Azazel has him pinned to the wall, and pretty much all of On the Head of a Pin.
I could go on and on about this topic forever, and I wanted to touch on how despite all the pain, Dean genuinely enjoys life in general and hunting specifically--which is very special and nostalgic to me and something I try to emulate as best I can-- but long post is already a wall of text, so I'll stop lol. Anyway, ty for the ask; it was delightful to answer.

I got my little sister into watching Supernatural
The deal is she watches this and I watch One Piece (the anime with more than 1000 episodes). But we watch every episodes of each show together.
This is going to be a busy year for sure. She already knows a lot of things about monsters (like wendigo, djinn and all), so I hope she'll like SPN.
So far we watched the 6 first episodes of season 1. I asked her who she preferred between Sam and Dean. She told me Sam makes her think of Sam from Lord of the Rings. And that Dean is a cliché. I tried not to take it personally.
But she saw my reaction, so she added that it's too soon for her to choose. And I decided to focus on that, just to not be mad at her because she just insulted Dean and by this she attacked my heart.
ANYWAY I'm FINE. I want to watch more. I want her to meet Cas. I want her to feel as insane as me about those characters. But I need to be patient and hope she'll want to keep watching.
I'll keep you posted. Especially because I'll need to let it all out if she keeps thinking that Dean is a cliché.
#supernatural#spn#sam winchester#dean winchester#castiel#I'm doing a whole rewatch at the same time#I'm rediscovering the characters before everything went out of hand#it's interesting#my heart keeps beating stronger for dean#don't get me wrong#sam is fine#but dean#i love him so much#maybe she'll prefer sam since she is the little sister#it would make sense i guess#i don't think she'll ship them#destiel#deancas#i can't wait to see what she thinks of cas#if we make it that far#let's hope#i'll let you know#i love dean winchester so much#my personal experience with spn

supernatural as a show needs to be studied because ive never rewatched a show and gone oh this is actually way better than i remember, especially one im revisiting after 6+ years but.
every episode i rewatch is like oh i can't believe i forgot about the djinn, gordon walker is such interesting of a character foil in hindsight he just wasnt in enough episodes, i 100% just didnt remember mary's deal with azazel, lucifer was actually really compelling when he was first introduced, bela was pretty fun to watch, i miss when they just had morally grey side characters who weren't like. powerful immortal beings
just like. there's so much shit you forget bc supernatural went on for SO long and the stakes kept getting higher and higher. early spn had a very different feel to it and the writing felt a lot more grounded. the focus on character over plot is kind of refreshing to go back to

October/Halloween/Horror Creation Celebration Prompts
Week 1 (Oct 1-7):
Creature Feature- celebrate your favorite monsters of spn or one you really wish had been in spn
Celestial Horror- the horror of angels and heaven and their interactions on earth
Slutty, Bloody, and Pathetic- three tenements of ideal blorbos, use all or some to show off your favorite spn blorbos
Week 2 (Oct 8-14):
Spooky Settings- put them in a situation or show off creepy settings in the show
Nightmare Fuel- is there an episode or concept you refuse to go back to? Want to make others shudder and turn that light back on tonight? Here's your chance.
Cursed Artifacts- bring the horror or bring the camp with some cursed artifacts
Buckets of Blood- spells that require blood, injuries, the spatter of gore
Week 3 (15-21):
Non Spooky Halloween/Horror Comedy- horror not really your thing? Make it fun, make it campy, celebrate Halloween like Mint Condition
Found Footage Vibes- bring your own spin to a classic sub genre using spn
Spooky Weather- what's horror without creeping fog, thunderstorms, or a dark and windy night?
Classic Horror- harken back to classic horror stories and cinema with style, monsters, etc
Week 4 (Oct 22-28):
Let's Split Up Gang- separate the team/family in some way, either with hunts or something with the Stanford era/post series
Urban Legends- we got some in the show like the Hook Man and Bloody Mary, but there's so many more you can dive into. Celebrate those or others, bring out some cryptids. Maybe Dean is wrong about Bigfoot not existing, the world is your oyster.
There's Always Another One: another monster, another hunt on the horizon, an unexpected issue popping up, or maybe there's something else unexpected. It's all up to you how you take this one on.
Week 5 (Oct 29-31)
Halloween Incarnate: anything and everything to do with the holiday. Decorating, trick or treating, dressing up, buying bargain candy on Nov 1, any and all is fair game.
Trick: It's time to be cruel and come up with something that feels perfect until the cracks start showing. Give us djinn dreams, Chuck won truthing, misunderstandings, anything tricky.
Treat: Bring on the fluff and happiness. That perfect ending or moment, happiness is in the having and let's celebrate it.
You don't have to follow all the prompts, you're welcome to pick and choose which you feel like fulfilling. The week ranges are suggestions and not hard guidelines you can post whenever you want. The big thing is to have new things to see and share. Whatever you choose to do, as many posts as you make please remember to tag #contentnatural or @contentnatural in your posts so we can see them and reblog them. Please also remember to tag content warnings and NSFW warnings appropriately

i'm sorry to rant about the angels in spn again (see original thread here - i'm tired of me, too, for the record) but i feel i made some concessions in that thread which i shouldn’t have, because people made some really good points and i kind of got side-tracked from my original point. once again, feel free to give me your thoughts, whether you agree or disagree. i finally learned how to add cuts, so click to read more :D
one of the reasons i love season 1 so much is because, in my opinion, it is the closest approximation to what spn was supposed to be. scrambled urban legends which our heroes have to untangle (e.g. Bloody Mary and the many myths around her) and uncertain folklore. take the episodes 'Phantom Traveler' and 'Skin', for example. in the former, demons are said to come in many different forms and this particular one to function like the initiator of a natural disaster which has adapted to the times. you're "wide open to demonic possession" if you're emotionally distressed, rather than just anyone being possessed. so cool!! the latter is a spin on the well-known idea of shapeshifters. the audience knows generally what to expect, but spn establishes its own unique, awesome lore. shapeshifters literally SHED THEIR SKIN, they don't just look like their target they become them, they need to keep their target alive for a psychic connection so they can download their thoughts and memories. so damn cool fr. even 'Bugs', a "bad" episode (spoiler alert: it's really not), had the super cool concept of curses tied to the land which the boys can't break, almost like the natural disasters of the supernatural world, which the two random guys we call our protagonists are not equipped to deal with. even by season 2, some of this has been lost. rather than establishing unique lore, the monster of the week episodes become more about using the same old lore in different and fun ways. e.g. sam and dean hunt a ghost while in prison, they investigate ghosts which are being controlled on a movie set. even when they introduce new monsters (djinn, zombies, the trickster, people infected with the croatoan virus, werewolves), they're used more for story purposes and we don't really learn all that much about them. the exception i guess would be the crossroads deals, which warranted explaining since john sold his soul for dean and dean would later do the same for sam. using lore in creative ways is very much a good thing, but these episodes rarely build much on the lore itself, just put the characters in unique situations; again, that's a good thing, but you can do both! more of season 2 goes towards plot episodes - and i'm not complaining, the plot is awesome! but i wish they kept the season 1 lore stuff up. it makes me think of that post which says "what is lore in supernatural if not just any book sam reads" and yeah. just yeah. bring back tulpas and friends!
now for how this ties into the angels: as per the original thread, they could have been super creepy! they were certainly not used to their full potential in the horror department. however, i will reiterate my opinion: they do not work with the original idea of spn. adding them turned it into a different show. even if they're made to be creepy and straight-up evil, there is baggage which will inevitably be dragged into the show with their inclusion. who in the world doesn't know at least a little about and have preconceived notions of angels? not many people, and most of those people would not be watching spn. the same could be said of ghosts and demons, but there is a religious baggage inherent to angels which cannot be avoided. even demons can be somewhat separated from their religious roots, especially if they turn out to not be demons at all (theory here). and, like i said, the show and its characters were not supposed to deal with religion beyond the spectre of it, sam having faith and dean not. their (lack of) faith informed their decisions, but neither of them were wrong or right in their beliefs, just at odds. the world should have felt claustrophobic while also being too intricate to fully understand and retaining a sense of mystery, and season 1 achieved this the best with some of the most complex and interesting lore in the show and the small stakes and small scale. get the cosmic beings out of my face, eric; no you cannot have angels if they just turn out to be dicks! i know better than you and i am gnawing on your bones.

Beautiful Spouse’s Rewatch Thoughts SPN 13x17 The Thing
“I don’t know what the fuck we’re looking at. Is that some historical shit?” “This isn’t the Men of Letters is it? That doesn’t make any sense” “Fkn tentacle monsters or what/“ “Fkn really? That wouldn’t stick that well” “How many times can you check the archives?” “Hasn’t he digitized this yet?” “Those post-its would have fallen off a long time ago” “I feel like Dean needed a little extra glue to make them stick” “Aren’t they in the bunker alone together? How is that funny?” It’s funny to Dean
“Didn’t they just an episode or whatever ago tell a guy they’re from Rhode Island?” “that brick looks pretty modern for a chapter house unless we’re looking next door of course” “Underground?” “That’s how I feel all of my questions go. I ask a question then the show answers it like 5 seconds later. Convenient how that works out” “I feel like they redid part of the bunker. Convenient set” “They didn’t bother centralizing this information” “Didn’t we meet that one on the ship? Or is this something else?” “Did he knock over some jar that had her in it or sometime? Like a djinn?” “What? I thought Ketch and Asmodeus died?” “Why would they bother taking her out? They don’t know why she was locked up” “Shittiest part of that is realizing everyone you knew is dead” “oh yeah that’s right” “What is Ketch waiting for?” “He didn’t say a goddamn word” “Does that play music for the whole place or just the table?” I think it’s just the table
“Polo” “Ah” “pretty quick to offer that” “oh yes. Have that in your back pocket for the one day 100 years later in the only diner in town. Little more than a small coincidence here” “Is Asmodeus going to kill Ketch?” “Convenient they discovered the rip in the air same season as opening multidimensional doors” “well yeah no shit” “really confused as to how these people found them.
