The Art of Appreciation: A Diwali Night to Remember
Oh, the Indian community in Australia—a minority that’s major enough for political parties to take notice. (Yes, folks from the subcontinent if you get together in sufficient numbers you can elect a few politicians of your own, at least 10 – 12.) But let’s save the heavy political deliberations for another time. For now, let’s talk about the joy and the struggle of celebrating our unique…

Pakistan's most-populous province of Punjab has imposed a ban on almost all open-air activities and ordered stores, markets and malls in some areas to close early as high levels of air pollution cause an unprecedented rise in smog-driven illnesses.
Schools have also closed in the main cities of the province, of which Lahore is the capital, with all the restrictions to run until November 17.
Earlier this month, Lahore, which regularly ranks among the world's most polluted cities, had an air pollution index score of 1,900 in some places, according to Swiss group IQAir.
Although the level is now lower, its index score of more than 600 on Monday still means that residents are breathing highly toxic air, with 0-50 considered the target score.
What did the Punjab government say?
"The spread of conjunctivitis/pink eye disease due to bacterial or viral infection, smoke, dust or chemical exposure is posing a serious and imminent threat to public health," the Punjab government said.
It said open-air sports events, exhibitions, festivals and restaurant dining were prohibited, but "unavoidable religious rites" could still take place.
Pharmacies, oil depots, dairy shops and fruit and vegetable shops are also to be allowed to stay open beyond the 8 p.m. local time closing time stipulated in the directive.
What is causing the smog?
Air pollution rises each winter in several regions of South Asia as cold air traps dust, factory and vehicle emissions and smoke from stubble burning on farms.
In addition, the Punjab government is blaming the air pollution crisis this year on neighboring India.
The pollution problems there have been made worse by the smoke emitted by firecrackers set off on Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights celebrated on October 31 this year, despite a ban.
Children at risk
UNICEF on Monday called for more to be done to save children from the deleterious effects of air pollution.
The UN's child protection agency said the toxic air in the region was putting more than 11 million children below five years of age at risk.
"In addition, schools in smog-affected areas have been closed ... the learning of almost 16 million children in Punjab has been disrupted," said Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF representative in the country, adding that the country could ill afford more learning losses.
The WHO says that air pollution can trigger strokes, heart disease, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.
Children, especially babies, and the elderly are the groups most at risk.

Last Monday of the Week 2024-10-28
Back in the saddle
Listening: Went to a show at DNA Lounge, the nightclub run by James Zawinski of Netscape and Firefox and Xscreensaver fame. Small show, thursday night deal, but pretty good. Main event was I Speak Machine.
youtube
Good show! Lots of screechy unnerving sounds, and a really well choreographed stage performance that pairs with replays of the music videos very precisely that was impressive to watch.
Reading: About halfway through The city and the city which is extremely funny in a very dark way. What do you do about border control when two cities exist in the same space, do you simply give up and allow people to mix freely? No, that's insane, you enforce rigid customs and laws to prevent the mixing of two spatially colocated populations from different countries. Duh. I should read more Mieville.
Watching: Watched Solo: A Star Wars Story on the plane mostly to pad out the front half of a flight until my scheduled sleep time. It's not a good movie! Every other line feels like a pick-up mandated by an anxious marketing team who were worried someone might not understand what's going on. Near constantly explaining the blatantly obvious.
Look. Okay. Han Solo can be an interesting guy. He is a scoundrel with a heart of gold which is a great archetype to play. They decide to play this bizarrely.
I cut the weird style some slack. Much like Rogue One, they were trying to see what happens if you make a movie that isn't a samurai movie in the Star Wars universe, in this case this is a sort of war refugee/insurgency/espionage deal. I think that's interesting. The imperial trench warfare raises patently unanswerable questions about the state of the imperial military. Making Han an ex-Imperial soldier could be more interesting if they played into it at all but they don't. Which is stupid. They have Qi'ra taking up with Crimson Dawn which is a great parallel! It writes itself!
In a great example of not trusting the audience the final-ish scene features Qi'ra talking to Darth Maul, the most recognizable motherfucker in the Star Wars Universe and they have him deploy his lightsaber for no fucking reason JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET IT IT'S DARTH MAUL YOU KNOW THE GUY FROM PHANTOM MENACE? WITH THE DUAL LIGHTSABER? IT'S THAT GUY. They should have saved some time by providing ushers in the theaters with physical copies of the script so that they could individually beat moviegoers over the head with them.
Playing: Gave my partner a brief tour of the games library while they were hanging out which ended in us playing Drink More Glurp together, which is a fantastic party game, gotta organize that with my friends sometime. If you haven't played Glurp, it's a QWOP-like party game where you play various chopped-and-screwed sports events as aliens with two huge arms and a freespinning body where each stick on a controller controls one arm. Watch this LRR stream to see it in action.
youtube
Making: Busy with some printing designs but they are not yet realized. Also I have other things to do including Diwali foods. Technically the timeline is really tight but no one else knows when Diwali is so I can do whatever I want.
Tools and Equipment: A coat with a lot of pockets plus a window seat on a plane means you can use the coat hook on the seat in front of you to stash a large number of readily accessible items in a convenient way without really inconveniencing anyone if you plan this out correctly.

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To In November
Can't believe it's now November and it's about to get a lot colder and darker out. In addition to Diwali (11/1), Daylight Savings Time Ending (11/3), Election Day (11/5), Veterans Day (11/11), and Thanksgiving (11/28) here is what's on my radar this month:
Movies:
Blitz
Steve McQueen (the director, not the action actor of yesteryear) is one of the finest directors of the last 15 years with dramas like Shame and 12 Years a Slave. Now he's back with a British World War II drama. Opens 11/1 and Apple TV+ premiere on 11/22.
Juror #2
Clint Eastwood is now 94 and it's amazing to see the caliber of films he's directed just in the last 20 years. His new legal thriller reunited About a Boy stars Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette too. Opens 11/1.
Beatles '64
Director David Tedeschi has been the longtime editor on a number of Martin Scorsese's documentaries over the years, but he really impressed me when he co-directed with Scorsese the doc Personality Crisis. Now Tedeschi, with Scorsese producing, is turning his attention to the year 1964 for The Beatles. Premieres 11/29 on Disney+ (review to come).
Music:
Primal Scream Come Ahead
Scotland's Primal Scream haven't released a new album in eight years. Now they are back with a new one dropping on 11/8.
George Harrison Living In the Material World 50th Anniversary
George Harrison's fourth solo studio album was released in 1973. Now to celebrate the 50th anniversary (actually 51 but who's counting?) its getting the anniversary deluxe treatment. Re-release on 11/15 (review to come).
Kim Deal Nobody Loves You More
It might surprise you to learn that legendary bassist / singer Kim Deal, known for her work with The Pixies as her own bands The Breeders and The Amps, has never released a solo album. Until now that is! Album drops 11/22!
The Beatles The U.S. Albums in Mono Box Set
Speaking of The Beatles and 1964 being a historic year for them, 6 of their U.S. albums and 1 from 1965 are being released in a special remastered box set dropping 11/22 (review to come).
U2 How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb 20th Anniversary Edition
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of U2's best albums, there will be a 20th anniversary edition being released in various formats featuring unreleased outtakes. Re-issue drops 11/29.
Events:
Northeast Comic Con
I’ve had a blast covering the Northeast Comic Con for years now (read my coverage here) and the Holiday 2024 edition looks awesome with special guests like Micky Dolenz, Michael Des Barres, Kelli Maroney, and more! Convention is at the Boxborough Regency (Boxborough, MA) from 11/29-12/1 (coverage to come).
RSD Black Friday
As if Record Store Day weren't exciting enough as a day to celebrate record stores, but with Black Friday, they have a special RSD edition on 11/29!

Real Reason why I was not that active in Franstober is that I was not able to get time to do the posts and since last week there were a lot of events at home including 30th October and yesterday (31st October) because we usually don't celebrate Halloween, we celebrate it as "Bhoot Chaturdashi" which is a bengali version of Halloween but no one wears costumes instead they light 14 diyaa or clay lamps to make way for our deceased loved ones and to drive away evil spirits. 2024 is an unexpected collab of events as there's Halloween, Kali Puja and Diwali in one day that is yesterday. This is me dressed yesterday:
Also boop me pls!!! Before I boop you!!!
And October did not turn out the way I expected. I thought there would be Autumn whereas the temperature is worse than Summer

Spread the Light Campaign: #HappyHappyDiwali
Celebrating Diwali with Purpose
In the heart of every festival lies a profound purpose – to bring people together, to celebrate life, and to spread joy. At 1GEN, we believe that Diwali, the festival of lights, offers us a unique opportunity to do just that, but on a scale that transcends our immediate surroundings. This is why, year after year, we embark on our "Spread the Light" campaign, a heartfelt initiative that seeks to illuminate lives far beyond the reach of our diyas.
Our purpose for this campaign is to share a deeper connection, understand why kindness matters, and help others experience a Diwali full of joy and light.
The Spread the Light campaign, marked with our signature hashtag #HappyHappyDiwali, is 1GEN’s annual initiative focused on harnessing the spirit of giving. As a crowdfunding effort, it is designed to bring people together for a shared cause: to brighten lives by building hope and spreading happiness.
The Dance of Three Flames
As the poet within us whispers:
First light dances in children's eyes
As Diwali Mela dreams touch the skies
Second light through Empower Vision glows
As clarity and hope together flows
The third light, Umeed Ka Diya burns bright
Where wisdom's hearts dance in festive light
Three flames unite in purpose true:
When we light others, we light up too ✨
Why do we do this?
The answer lies in the very essence of Diwali itself. This festival reminds us that light always triumphs over darkness, and that hope can flourish even in the most challenging times.
At 1GEN, we believe every kind act creates a ripple effect, bringing more warmth and light into the world. Our mission is to foster communities where compassion is the foundation, and we aim to rally givers who feel this sense of purpose. Together, we create a network of hope that stretches across generations and communities.
Our journey with Spread the Light isn’t just about raising funds; it’s about inspiring others to see the power of collective action. For us, helping others during Diwali isn’t enough unless we’re driven by the why. Each year, we ask ourselves, "Why is this important to us?" This reflection fuels our dedication and reminds us that kindness truly is the light in all our lives.
A Journey of Impact
The past years have taught us that impact isn't just measured in numbers, though our achievements tell a compelling story:
₹138,024 raised (3x our initial seed money)
70 women supported with sustainable solutions
Countless nutritious meals provided, three times a day
Hundreds of smiles brightened
Thousands of moments created
But these figures, impressive as they may be, only scratch the surface of our true impact. The real story lies in the transformations we've witnessed – the spark in a child's eye when they realise they're not forgotten, the quiet dignity in an elder's smile when they feel valued, the renewed hope when clear vision brings the world back into focus.
Looking Forward: The 2024 Vision
This year, our ELEMENT Leadership program candidates have crafted three powerful initiatives that embody our core belief: that light multiplies when shared. Through the Diwali Mela, Empower Vision, and Umeed Ka Diya, we're not just organizing events – we're creating spaces where:
Joy finds its home
Hope gets a new perspective
Wisdom meets warmth
This year, 1GEN has initiated three campaigns designed to transform lives with compassion and hope:
Diwali Mela at an Orphanage in Chandigarh Imagine a carnival where every game wins a smile, where every moment creates a memory. Our Diwali Mela isn't just an event – it's a canvas where children paint their dreams with colors of joy.
Empower Vision Campaign in Pune When someone sees the world clearly for the first time, their eyes light up with possibilities. Through Empower Vision, we're creating moments where clarity meets celebration, where every new perspective brings fresh wonder.
Diwali Celebration at an Old Age Home in Delhi In the warm glow of Umeed Ka Diya, stories come alive. Our elderly wisdom-keepers share tales that bridge generations, creating connections that illuminate hearts.
The 1GEN Way: Unity in Purpose
What makes the Spread The Light campaign uniquely 1GEN is our approach to impact. We see it as a community. Every team member, every participant, and every supporter is part of a larger story of transformation.
Our success isn't measured in donations or numbers alone, but in the lasting connections we build, the dignity we preserve, and the joy we create together. Because at 1GEN, we understand that true impact comes not from helping down, but from lifting up – together.
Why We Light These Diyas
At 1GEN, Spread The Light (STL) isn't just a campaign – it's our way of living the true spirit of Diwali. We believe that joy multiplies when shared, that light grows stronger when passed on, and that celebrations become meaningful when they touch lives.
Our ELEMENT teams pour their hearts into these initiatives because they understand: that when we light up others' lives, our own inner light burns brighter. It's about creating a circle of joy where giving and receiving become one.
Join Us in Spreading the Light
Looking Forward
This Diwali, we invite you to be part of this continuing story of light. Whether you're organizing activities, sharing skills, or simply spreading joy, your light matters. Because at 1GEN, we believe that true celebration lies not in the brightness of our lamps, but in the warmth of our collective spirit.
Be the Light This Diwali
Ready to be part of this illuminating journey? ➡️ [Know More] ➡️ [Support]
Together, let's make this Diwali truly Happy Happy for everyone. ✨

LAILA MAIN LAILA AISI HOON LAILA HAR KOI CHAHE MUHJSE MILNA AKELA
☾♔; March 17, 2024 ☾♔; 4:56pm ☾♔; sotd: What Jhumka? (from Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani) ☾♔; cotd: Rani Chatterjee ☾♔; Thistle Grove Academy ☾♔; Storyboard/Important Connections
𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞: lyrics from "Laila Main Laila"
I've always sucked at making storyboard type sets, but YIKES. lol, whatever.
【 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖 】
Laila is an heiress of 𝓡𝓪𝓲𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓭 Industries, an Indian multinational conglomerate founded by Laila's great-grandfather, Thakur Raj Raichand, in the early 1950's after Partition. While the company has long since gone public, it is still majority owned by the Raichand Family, and they run every aspect of it. Now Mumbai (Bombay) based, the Raichand's originate from the state of Rajasthan where the family once owned a fairly large piece of land that was sold off when Laila's grandfather was young. After succeeding in Bombay, the land was repurchased, as well as much of the surrounding area and a large palace named Chandshah Haveli was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic architecture style.
Karshvar is the seven-story Raichand estate in Mumbai, located on Altamount Road (also known as Billionaires’ Row), the name of the estate comes from Zoroastrian mythology. The Avesta, the primary collection of religious texts in Zoroastrianism, describes seven Karshwar, climbs or zones, that organize the world into seven circles superimposed on top of one another, separated by waters, mountains, and forests. Until the completion of the Ambani’s Antilia, Karshvar was the most expensive private residence in the country, possibly the entire region, and yes, it is more expensive than their literal palace in Rajasthan (as an FYI, Antilia is the most expensive private residence in the world, as of 2014, might’ve been surpassed by now). However, Karshvar still claims the most ground floor square footage of the road.
The Raichand's are a relatively traditional family, certainly in western standards, though they are considered very progressive amongst other Desi's, having a very religiously mixed and accepting family, and very matriarchal family. Women have long held authoritative power over the family, though that has passed matrimonially, with the wife of each successive head of the family gaining that authority. Overall the Raichands are a Hindu family, however, their spouses have come from all over India and beyond, of varied faiths and sects, due to this, the Raichand’s also have large celebrations for holidays of multiple religions, obviously Hinduism, as well as Sikhism, Jainism, and Islam. Their biggest events are Diwali, Durga Puja, Vaisakhi, Navratri, Karva Chauth, Eid, the First and Last Iftars of Ramadan, and Holi. They also have a fairly large, but private, family only event for Raksha Bandhan.
Laila is not close to her maternal family at all, neither is her mother. She's asked about them a couple times before, but her mother doesn't have the best expression when talking about her family, so Laila stopped asking. If they want to know them, they can find them, it's not Laila's problem. She’s not even completely sure if her mom’s original last name is even Burakgazi, her parents have changed the story a few times, but have more or less stayed consistent that they met while her father was working. At one point the story was almost identical to the plot of the film Bang Bang!, wherein a RAW agent supposedly stole the Koor-i-noor diamond back from the British, something involving multi-national terrorists, and her mom being a bank teller caught in the middle after her dad hijacked her blind date, none of which made any sense, but it was a fun story.

Dadaji aur Dadi (paternal grandparents, literally means grandpa/grandma, ji is a respectful suffix, not always used, and can be omitted based on the personal relationship or the situation).
Dadi does not have a favourite grandchild, she loves them all equally. She does, however, have a favourite child, and that is Veer. Papa and Auntie Riya do not like to talk about it.

Zaara is publicly referred to as “Zaara Bhabhi”, by netizens, Raichand Industries employees, and other industrialists, all of whom regard her as the true head of Raichand Industries, as even though she does not work in the company, Veer’s love for her and deference to her is well-known, and she has the last word on everything. Because of this she is often the target for schmoozing campaigns (though it doesn’t necessarily work, a lot of Laila’s judgey and stubborn personality comes from her).

Aka the Mean Girls! They are so judgey and bitchy, and kinda ice cold. Very much alienate others by speaking in languages only the three of them will understand, usually Portuguese while in Dubai, and Arabic elsewhere. The three are neighbours, living in the same residential Skyscraper in Downtown Dubai, though all three's families have additional properties in Dubai, and with Kiran in particular, the Desai's have a villa right next to the Raichand one on the Palm Jumeirah. They also went to the same private school until Laila and Isabella started attending Thistle Grove.

Kat is Payal and Kiran’s second cousin (probably), her paternal grandmother, Rashmi, is the sister of Yogesh Raichand’s best friend and Payal and Kiran’s grandfather, all three (Yogesh and the Desai siblings) grew up together, Rashmi and Yogesh even dated with talks of marriage until he met Mohini. Rashmi eventually married Kat’s paternal grandfather, and the couple moved to London for his work. A couple years younger than the Emirati trio, Kat lived most of her life in the UK, until her parents company moved them to their Dubai offices, and she built a closer relationship with Kiran and joined her friend group. Having grown up abroad, Kat’s Hindi isn’t great, though she can understand the gist of what is being said, her Arabic is far more fluent.

A new addition to the Emirati gang, Aarón joined the friends after moving to Dubai following his mother’s marriage to Siddharth Singhania, and making him the younger step-brother of Vikram Singhania, both of whom are part of the Raichand generational family friends group. Senior Singhania being a close friend of Veer, Vikrant, and Riya, while Vikram is besties with Yash and Zoya.

I am very normal and not creating 80 thousand additional relationships.
𝓢𝓪𝓶𝓪𝓻𝓪 𝓡𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓱𝓪𝔀𝓪 FC: Kriti Sanon
A slightly more distant cousin (second I think, don’t ask me), Samara is the granddaughter of Yogesh Raichand’s youngest sister, Sriti. Samara grew up primarily in Delhi with her paternal family, but often celebrated religious holidays with the Raichands.
𝓢𝓸𝓷𝓪𝓶 𝓑𝓪𝓴𝓼𝓱𝓲 FC: Pooja Hegde
Vijay's cousin, daughter of one his dad's sisters. Studied at the University of Orléans (Université d'Orléans)
【 𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒 】
This is literally for me because I’m losing track of all the notable Families affiliated with the Raichands and their histories. I keep expanding my family tree, and forgetting things I don’t put in the bio sections. Laila took keeping things in the family too literally, by her I mean me, but literally everyone mentioned up there is bound in her family tree through one method or another, even got Is in there cause I decided that her half-brother is Laila’s eventual endgame. Far in the future, cause he a lot older (like red flag), so he doesn’t show up now, it’ll be creepy if he does.
Desai’s, friendship dates back to before even Yogesh, the Desai’s were heavily involved in establishing Raichand Industries, and outside of the Raichand family, own the most shares of RaiI, in the current generation, Vijay (grandson of Yogesh) and Payal (granddaughter of Dushant) are engaged. Yogesh once dated Dushant’s sister with semi-serious marriage talks, but forgot all of that after meeting Mohini, so that was awkward and dramatic. Lol Dadaji is a slut.
Khan & Kapoor filmi fam’s, friendship from the Veer/Vikrant/Riya generation, very thinly veiled references to bollywood things for my enjoyment. This Khan and Kapoor branch are also connected to each other, I think they are cousins by descent, while the Raichand connection is through a marriage, oh wait, the Raichand connection is even further away, cause it’s through the Dhanraj’s marriage! So at most, Vijay’s something, something cousins, but not Laila, Zoya, or Yash’s.
Singhania, frienship from Veer/Vikrant/Riya generation, but working relationship from Yogesh’s era
