i'm so glad i don't feel the urge to have to political post on the blog anymore.
#like. if you know me then you know what i believe in#which is. the value of every life.#the importance of providing every person on the planet what they need to live with safety and dignity.#and the necessity of mitigating opposition to that goal and limiting harm to The World#as much as is possible as one person living under the conditions of our current reality#with hope and effort toward making our future reality one where we are increasingly able to care for one another#instead of engaging in an endless competition of profit and imagined division that causes immeasurable suffering and death.#like. from that philosophy i think you can determine my stance on anything that matters.#The Game Of Politics is only important insofar as it impacts actual lives.#and we should all be thinking bigger than that. like. yknow. abolishing borders altogether. dismantling capitalism worldwide.#creating a global society that benefits as many individual human people as possible.#so like. yeah. i'm going to vote. i'm not gonna be happy about it because there is no one on the ballot that actually represents my values.#because fundamentally all politicians are going to enforce and uphold a system that is inherently oppressive and authoritarian#but. there are some politicians who will cause more harm than others.#and their policies will make a difference in many lives.#and i feel personally obligated to try to Lessen The Harm. since there is nothing i can presently do to Eliminate The Harm.#like. idk. we're not gonna vote our way out of the root of the issues. but we can vote our way out of Some Degree of Some issues. like. idk#abortion. deregulation. environmental initiatives. etc. that stuff makes Some Difference to A Lot Of People.#(none of this passes judgment on those who are abstaining from voting for president because of the continuing genocide in palestine.#i do sincerely understand not being able to stomach it. and if the dems lose then it's only their own fault for being spineless fucks)#but like. if i can vote for somebody who IS LESS LIKELY to directly jeopardize the lives of certain groups of marginalized people#then. i'm gonna... do that. while continuing to work toward & believe in a better fairer freer future for everyone.#ANYWAY. that's my ONE political post for the year. steps off my soapbox.#izzy.txt

placeholder eohric in various states of obscenity and shininess
first pic, he's dressed to play a tag game, specifically on the orange team. his game vest is a fox pelt i drew with my eyes shut. while the game is a bit like tag rugby, with members of the opposing team trying to take the white flags off the game vest, there is an additional element where for every time you get tagged, you have to add a ribbon in the opposing team's colours (swapping out your own team colours). eventually you may be forced to change sides. this often leaves a tag game with very unbalanced teams of one or two skilled players against an army of less skilled, which is very fun. tag games can last several days and only end when one team has been depleted entirely. games can have more than two teams on the field at once, for extra chaos
middle pic i wanted to get a handle on his height - he's actually very short, i've been thinking of his pony half as perhaps 11hh, and in form similar to an A-division welsh pony. during his first excursion to ironwall, as a member of a bachelor band, he was almost immediately stopped by the military recruiters who had been dispatched specifically to sweep up young men and press them into service. this recruiter very sternly tells him that he must cover up when he is in Ironwall. he joined the army and didn't like it but he did get to be one of the drummers when they all went to war. i drew a human guy for the sake of the height comparison but in reality the people who would enforce dress codes & manage the young conscripts would be older centaurs.
last pic i remembered i had my marker brushes remember those. feels like it's been years. here he wears nothing and his tail is not yet back-combed into a fun little pom pom shape.

D&D players often talk about the six abilities of D&D dividing neatly into two categories, physical and mental, but not only does this division actually not really make sense within the wider context of D&D as a game, I think it's actually one of those things where the game itself has never used those descriptors for the abilities but the fandom has found the division useful for whatever reason.
The closest I think D&D has come to enforcing such a duality is in 3e, where a number of spells treated a character's Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores as effectively "separate" from a character Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. But even then the separation wasn't actually described using the words "physical" and "mental."

I do not want to make assumptions.....but since Season 2 Arc 1 of Arcane, I've had a sneaking suspicion that the Piltover vs Zaun plot isn't going to be tackled well- as in they are not going to actually address the class issues and the exploitation in a direct manner for long. Caitlyn's redemption arc and propping up Jinx as the saviour over Ekko was what made me even more suspicious.
By making it Jinx instead of Ekko who is clearly in the right, who is reasonable and from the Undercity, they make Caitlyn look more reasonable. The implication that Firelights are part of the division between Zaunites is adding insult to injury with Ekko's complete disappearance in Act 2.
I actually like Jinx's arc but she shouldn't be the leader of Zaun's revolution. It should be Ekko.
I have seen a lot of media dealing with systematic issues and exploitation. I don't remember a single story made by a large corporation which kept dealing with the problem start to finish and properly condemned the oppressors. A nice shortcut I've seen, is introducing an even bigger threat than the "warring factions" of Rich v Poor or Exploiter v Exploited.
This seemingly resolves the conflict because the bigger threat unites the two fronts and forces them to set aside their differences, but it doesn't actually solve the pre-existing problem in the slightest.
I was hoping Arcane wouldn't, but it is barreling towards the same mistake by making Viktor the big bad of the story (and Singed as side character big bad). By highlighting Singed as someone who is especially heinous, it is playing into affirming the biases Piltover's people have about the undercity. Caitlyn's justified in throwing this guy into an inhuman hellhole because he's especially evil. Forget about how it was under Caitlyn's rule that Isha got put in there, it was actually Ambessa's fault! Don't blame the Pilties they're being manipulated!
Caitlyn by Ambessa
Salo by Viktor
Viktor being a villain is fine because....because why? Why is Viktor the villain now? I appreciate a good villain arc and descent into villainy- Caitlyn's S2 Arc 1 story did it perfectly. But Viktor's makes no fucking sense. One conversation with Singed is going to make him horrible? The Arcane is specifically making Viktor worse? Viktor was the only character in season 1 who focused on bettering people's lives, he continues to do so in season 2 and he's rightfully upset.
Even Jinx's redemption arc hinges on Caitlyn seeing the human in her, it ends with Vi asking Caitlyn to trust Jinx. And actually this time around Warwick killed Isha so it's fine don't be mad at the enforcers who set up camp to invade a commune.
In-story, Viktor running a cult is bad, Caitlyn defying Ambessa is in fact good. But why make these decisions. Why make Caitlyn the Enforcer, the upper class, the good guy when she gassed the undercity? Why make Viktor, the scientist from Zaun who directly suffered from The Grey, who wanted to help people and has never intentionally hurt anyone up until Arc 2 the villain? Why are the writers making these decisions? This is a bit of a Doylist perspective on things but I need to examine things this way because end of the day, this is Riot Games, this League of Legends and a show made by Netflix. At every step is a monopoly and it influences the stories being told, the stories being kept.
I will reserve complete judgement until Arc 3, but I am not particularly optimistic.

Today we have the second part to our long fic rec list! These fics are all 100k words or more. If you missed the first part to this rec list, you can check it out here. If you enjoy our rec lists, please be sure to like and reblog this post to help spread the word.
1) The Rose of Whitechapel | Mature | 100,181 words
Jack the Ripper AU - Detective Constable Harry Styles and his partner, DC Liam Payne, lead the case on the Whitechapel murders. Louis Tomlinson, the Rose of Whitechapel, is harbouring secrets of his own, along with a dark and sordid past. When their paths cross, truths are revealed, and perhaps hearts are mended… A darkness is brewing, and it’s finally come to collect on the promise it was made.
2) The Maddest Obsession | Explicit | 100,974 words
One fears the dark. One rules it. Harry Styles, the dangerous mob enforcer, finds himself entangled with Louis, the strong-willed mafia-princess. As they navigate the treacherous underworld of New York, their forbidden love sparks a deadly game of loyalty, betrayal, and passion. Will their devotion to each other overcome the chaos surrounding them, or will their love be their downfall?
3) Shadow Dances | Mature | 101,591 words
Louis Tomlinson has a begrudging gift, he’s able to communicate with the spirits of the dead. Often against his will, and almost always at the most inconvenient of times. He and his partner, Zayn Malik, work for a covert division of the New Haven Federal Bureau of Investigations. They aid in all kinds of cases, though their talents lie in the obscure and unsolvable. It’s when a strange new case falls onto their desks that they’re left questioning the extent of their abilities, and whether they were ever truly alone. Harry Styles was brought into the FBI for not only his skills, but his ability to mitigate the influx of spirits surrounding the elusive and obnoxiously infuriating sharp-tongued medium he’d been assigned to. Louis gets under his skin, he’s impulsive and a risk to the team according to Harry. They do however have to find a way to set aside their sordid history, and their reluctant attraction, to track down the murderer plaguing their coastal city.
4) Billow And Breeze (Islands And Seas) | Explicit | 102,506 words
It was bright; that was the first thing Louis could recall. With a groan, he winced at the throbbing behind the sockets of his eyes and rubbed his temples in an effort to soothe the pain. Maybe he really did hit his head when he took his tumble. The omega squinted as he looked at the surrounding rolling hills and fog hanging over the countryside. As strange as it was, the world felt different, though it looked practically the same. Disoriented and confused, Louis padded through the moss and listened for his husband. “Liam?” he croaked shakily. Nothing but a symphony of woodland creatures met his ears. His footsteps were muted by mossy green grass beneath his feet and soil fragrant as he neared the crest of the hill. At the top, he froze, lips parted in horror and eyes widening at the expanse of empty farmland—not a soul in sight. It had only been less than ten minutes prior that he could see Inverness from the crest, but now there was nothing. “Impossible,” he whispered to himself, shaking his head in disbelief—his mind not quite able to make sense of it.
5) Praise the Mutilated World | Explicit | 106,668 words
An enemies to lovers dystopian au where Harry is an elite alpha and Louis is a rebel omega with too much to fight for. Every move made is monitored, and a fertile omega’s purpose in life is one thing: to give children to their alpha.
6) My Kind Of Love | General Audiences | 108,178 words
Harry marries Louis for one year. Louis has no choice other than marry Harry fucking styles. There is a reason behind Harry’s sudden marriage with Louis and Louis has no idea about that. Maybe Harry married Louis for revenge.
7) Only You And Me | Not Rated | 109,836 words
Note: This is the sequel to this fic.
Louis goes on with his life after Harry, he hopes Harry comes back to him but is also on the search for something new. Will Harry reach out to Louis, or will Louis get over him and find something better?
8) You’ve Got A Higher Power, You’re Once In Any Lifetime | Explicit | 113,444 words
Giving up and letting them think they’re right were never valid options in Louis Tomlinson’s mind. In a society full of prejudices, finding a family and being accepted, also seemed like an unrealistic utopia. Louis sets out to do what no other of his kind ever has before and in doing so, he finds love, friendship and more about himself than he thought he would.
9) Like Water Over Fire (Like Water On Fire) | Mature | 119,264 words
Prince Harry has 46 men and 13 weeks to find the husband of his dreams, Louis has a limited amount to time to live out a royal fantasy. They might just be exactly what the other needs.
10) Tainted Saints And Velvet Vices | Mature | 126,057 words
A self-fulfilling Hogwarts AU in which Louis is new to seventh year and Harry is the resident devil-may-care Slytherin set to make his entire experience a living misery. Due to less than favourable circumstances they’re forced to forge an unwilling, tentative relationship for their own survival. Repressed emotions, decidedly unromantic ballroom dancing, Triwizard Tournament tasks, creative jinxes and twilight flying above the Forbidden Forest ensue.
11) Chandeliers And Fake Smiles | Mature | 145,010 words
On the brink of winning their first Grammy; up-and-coming rock band One Direction find themselves in the midst of the biggest scandal of their career - right before tickets for their world tour go on sale. in order to save their reputation, Louis Tomlinson must find it in his heart to forgive pop singer and heartthrob Harry Styles after his first impression rubbed him entirely the wrong way. after all, they cannot sell a relationship if it looks like they hate each other.
12) Buy Me Purple Flowers First | Teen & Up | 157,728 words
Louis Tomlinson is a 24-year-old rock star who tends to be rebellious and known as a “brat” in the extended media. The Omega has yet to find a mate and has no interests in being in a committed relationship. Harry Styles is a 22-year-old Alpha Bodyguard known for his past of protecting some of the most important politicians and musicians of their time. He has settled on a temporary job as a favour of a friend to look after the famous Louis Tomlinson to finish the leg of his European tour.
13) How Many Times Will It Take (To Get This Right) | Explicit | 157,805 words
Harry was watching her go, unable to meet Louis’ eyes again now that they were alone, and that’s how he saw him when the young boy leaned around Jay to peer at his mum and Harry. Harry’s jaw went slack, his mouth falling open in disbelief when two green orbs identical to his own found him and stared unwaveringly calm into Harry’s sunglasses-covered face. His small features were undeniably close to Louis’. Their noses, their lips, even their brow line was the same, but the pup’s eyes were an eerily familiar shade of emerald, and much rounder than Louis’. His hair fell in dark ringlets around his small face, which was also much too round to really say the child looked like Louis, despite the similar features. Harry sputtered when his alpha roared in his chest that Harry should follow the kid–should protect his pup. But there was no fucking way.
14) Charmed | Mature | 163944 words
Louis had always felt he was different, but he had never understood why. At least until one particular event devasted hum, turning his life upside down forever and bringing to the surface a past he didn’t know, a present he thought he knew, and a series of unexpected events that will trigger the beginning of a future he’s not sure he wants to live.
15) Sewn Into You | Explicit | 167,486 words
Harry Styles thinks soulmates are a fairytale, or in other words-a lie. He has no interest in entertaining anything that has anything to do with the very name that had been etched along his collarbone since his eighteenth birthday. Louis Tomlinson won’t be answering to another alpha for the rest of his life if he can help it. Fuck happy endings, his soul mate can choke on it. Problem is, Harry needs a personal assistant to save his family’s business, Louis needs the cash to officially move off of his childhood best-friend’s couch. They can manage. Surely, nothing will go wrong.
16) Don’t Let It (Me) Break | Explicit | 168,297 words
The one where Harry is oblivious, Louis is broken, Zayn and Liam are in love, Gemma and Lottie are lovely, and Niall is just waiting for everyone to get their shit together.
17) Non-Disclosure | Mature | 170,219 words
Being a world class Director, producing some of the best rated Romance movies to date, Louis was easily a sucker for the ‘Happy Ever After’. Except, in a world where he pretends and imagines true love. He was stuck inbetween what he thought was the love of his life and everything trying to stop them. “I did a lot of thinking when I was gone and every scenario I came up with ended with you. I’m fucking scared and I have no idea what will happen from now but I’d risk it all, if you could promise me a lifetime”
18) You Smell Like | Explicit | 185,369 words
The one where Louis is the Alpha’s mate and everyone is aware of it except for Louis and Harry. Go figure!
19) Three Days in February | Explicit | 187,642 words
How close is too close? Harry and Louis are about to find out after a drunken night leaves Louis cursed. With only a week before tour starts, the race is on to fix things before they lose Louis forever. Oh, and Harry has to keep his long-time crush on Louis a secret while the lad can literally hear his thoughts. Easy, right?
20) Collision | Not Rated | 226,294 words
Mythology/Fairytale!AU in which Louis is a dainty fairy with a temper who wants to be intimidating and Harry hurts people. Naturally, they hate each other.
21) Truth Behind Golden Eyes | Explicit | 228,727 words
Louis is a royal servant born with magic in a kingdom where his sole existence is outlawed with a war he has no idea he has a part in upon him. Harry is the prince on whom the burden of mending a broken kingdom falls upon and he might be willing to risk it all for a simple servant if only he admitted it to himself.
22) Join Me In The Afterlife | Explicit | 262,289 words
Louis is a simple guy - all he wants from his summer break is to spend some quality time with his mother, get to know her new husband, and learn to play the guitar. Nothing out of the ordinary, that is for sure. However, life has a funny way of working and when Louis finds a strange boy sitting on his bed one sunny day, his summer break takes a turn for the better (or worse) when he discovers a ghost has stolen his heart from the get-go.

I don't think I'm saying anything earth-shatteringly new when I state that the inner workings of the Ministry of Magic aren't exactly expanded upon in the hp books. it's safe to say that Rowling herself probably didn't think too deeply about the executive, judiciary and legislative powers of the magical government since the information we do have is scant and often contradictory; nevertheless, I have attempted to compile all the relevant facts disclosed in the books.
When researching the subject, I have not used any external material (i.e. Pottermore, JKR interviews, facts gleaned from post-7th book canon) because, having been written ex post facto, they are by nature unreliable. In the time inbetween writing the original books and the disclosure of post-canon details, jkr had time to do some revisionism and fill in existing gaps (the existence of which she may have been alerted to by others) and I'm not interested in any of jkr's attempts to rewrite history, regardless of the subject.
That said, I give you
The Definitive HP Law Compendium
a) THE MINISTRY
Our most exhaustive documentation on how the Ministry of Magic is structured comes by courtesy of the ministry elevators, which helpfully list all departments floor by floor.
on level 1: Minister of Magic and Support Staff (Umbridge's offices in DH are located here)
on level 2: Department of Magical Law Enforcement (henceforth shortened to DMLE), which includes the Improper Use of Magic offices, Auror Headquarters and the Wizengamot Administrative Services.
although not specified by the lift, this is also where the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts office (where Arthur Weasley works) is located, which tells us that the lift's announcements are not necessarily exhaustive.
on level 3: Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes composed of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, Obliviator Headquarters and Muggle-worthy Excuse Committee
on level 4: Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures which includes of the Beast, Being and Spirit Divisions, the Goblin liaison Office and the Pest Advisory Bureau.
on level 5: Department for International Magical Cooperation including the International Magical Trading Standards body, the International Magical Office of Law, and the British chapter of the International Confederation of Wizards (also referred to as the "International Confederation of Warlocks")
on level 6: Department of Magical Transport which includes the Floo Network Authority, Broom Regulatory Control, the Portkey Office and the Apparition Test Center (considering that Hogwarts student seem to take their apparition test at school, this is likely where adult wizards take and/or retake their tests)
on level 7: Department of Magical Games and Sports, which includes the British and Irish quidditch League (is magical Ireland not divided? unclear), the Headquarters of the Official Gobstones Club and, bizarrely, the Ludicrous Patents office (I'd be inclined to think this is a sports-related patent office if it wasn't the only one mentioned in the books)
on level 8 is the atrium, which Harry describes as a "very long and splendid hall" with many gilded fireplaces on both sides (left is for arrivals and right is for departures). This is also where the Fountain of Magical Brethren and the security desk are located. At the end of the hall, golden gates lead to a smaller room where the lifts (at least 20 in number) are.
on level 9: Department of Mysteries and beyond
The lift stops here but we know from OotP that there's at least one more floor that is only accessible by stairs from level 9 (which also brings up the question: are the upper floors also connected by stairs or is it an either/or scenario?). On this additional floor is Courtroom 10, which is supposedly no longer in use as of OotP but was still being used in the immediate aftermath of the first wizarding war. The courtroom's name implies the presence of at least 9 other courtrooms and, though their location is unclear, they do not seem to be located on this floor.
b) KNOWN GOVERNING BODIES
Going purely off of the only two law-adjacent departments mentioned by the ministry lifts, there's both an international and a state law department (on level 5 and 2 respectively) but seemingly no distinction between civil and criminal law.
Besides what described above by the lift, level 2 also appears to be where some offences are judged, as Harry's trial in OotP was originally scheduled to take place here, right inside the office of the head of the DMLE.
We know that, during Harry's time, the DMLE is headed by Amelia Bones, who gets quietly offed between OotP and HBP. She is succeeded by the imperiused Pius Thicknesse (who goes on to become minister of magic during the second war), who is in turn succeeded by noted Death Eater Corban Yaxley.
We further know that, prior to Amelia's tenure (though it's unknown if directly preceding), the department used to be headed by Barty Crouch sr., who later went on to head the office for International Magical Cooperation (where he was Percy Weasley's boss). This is implied to be a lateral career move at best since Sirius describes Crouch in GoF as being "shunted sideways".
The International Federation of Warlocks (part of the Office for International Cooperation) seems to be a legislative body of sorts, as we'll see later that it originated many of the laws mentioned in the books. We know that it was established prior to the advent of the Statue of Secrecy (and the subsequent creation of the Ministry of Magic) because professor Binns mentions they convened in 1289 in one of his lectures, implying that its existence precedes that date.
The books make no mention of the presence of a parliament in the wizarding world, not even in a Chamber of Lords-type fashion.
[note that Dumbledore seems to have had high positions in both the International Federation, where he was Supreme Mugwump, and the Wizengamot, where he was Chief Warlock. It's unknown what either of these titles entail]
Moving on to the judiciary branch, we know of the existence of the Wizengamot. It's described as "the wizard high court", which (to me) implies the presence of a lower court. The Council of Magical Law may be the lower court's name, as it may be the court presiding the trials Harry witnesses in Dumbledore's pensieve
Tumblr media
(from PoA)
As we'll see later, the postwar trials of Igor Karkaroff and Ludo Bagman, and the joint trial of Rabastan Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Bellatrix Lestrange and Barty Crouch jr are described quite differently from Harry's trial before the Wizengamot, which is what led me to believe that they were presided by two different courts.
The magical world doesn't appear to have an appellate court although, if jkr modeled the wizarding judiciary after the ones present in British Law, the Wizengamot may be modeled after the Crown Court and thus also serve an appellate function.
Finally, the books make no mention of barristers, solicitors or any other type of lawyer. The trials we witness are not presided by judges but by government officials and there is no indication that the Wizengamot members (who serve the function of a jury) have any type of legal training.
The defendants in the trials we happen to witness don't appear to have counsel of any type. Dumbledore acts as a defense lawyer of sorts for Harry in OotP but he announces himself as a "witness for the defence". Seeing that Dumbledore appears to be a living exception to all magical laws and customs, this doesn't actually tell us much.
The government officials acting in the function of the prosecution and the judge both do exhibit some knowledge of wizarding laws, as does Dumbledore (who was at one point chief Warlock) although, since Dumbledore is Dumbledore and therefore omniscient, this may not be indicative of any skill requirement for the position he held.
c) KNOWN LAWS
1.1 legal documents referenced in the books (in tentatively chronological order)
the Statute of Secrecy, decreed by the International Confederation of Warlocks in 1689
unnamed law decreed by the Warlocks' Convention of 1709: it outlaws dragon Breeding (as per Ron in PS)
The Decree for the Reasonble Restriction of Underage Sorcery (1875), which partly states in clause seven that "magic may be used before Muggles in exceptional circumstances, and as those exceptional circumstances include situations that threaten the life of the wizard or witch himself, or witches, wizards, or Muggles present at the time of the..." (as quoted by Dumbledore in OotP)
unnamed law punishing the use of Unforgivables
unnamed law delineating the purposes and limitations of the Trace
the Wizengamot charter of rights (mentioned on OotP): it partly states that an accused has the right to present defence witnesses (as stated by Dumbledore in OotP)
law fifteen B "any attack by a magical creature who is deemed to have near-human intelligence, and therefore considered responsible for its actions..." (as incompletely quoted by Dolores Umbridge in OotP)
the Decree for Justifiable Confiscation, which gives the ministry power to confiscate the contents of a will. It was created to stop wizards from passing on dark artefacts (as mentioned in DH)
unnamed law written by Arthur Weasley regarding the possible legality of flying cars/ enchanted muggle vehicles (as mentioned in CoS)*
unnamed document establishing an embargo on flying carpets, implied to have been drafted by Arthur Weasley (from GoF)*
Arthur Weasley's Muggle Protection Act (proposed legislation c.a. 1992, unknown contents, unknown if put into law)*
the International Ban on Dueling, implied to be an international agreement, Transylvanians haven't signed it as of summer 1994 (from GoF)
*: it's unclear how Arthur Weasley, who is not a lawyer, an elected official or a member of the only known legislative body in the books (the International federation of wizards), is able to both draft and propose legislation
1.2 educational decrees
I am including these because they are treated like laws. They are pushed for by a minister and they need to "pass", presumably through a parliament of sorts, in order to be enacted. Prior to the events of OotP there seem to have been 21 educational decrees, the contents of which we are unaware of. The ones added in book 5 by the Fudge administration (with the help of Dolores Umbridge) are as follows:
n.22 "in the event of the current headmaster being unable to provide a candidate for a teaching post, the Ministry should select an appropriate person"
n.23, creates the new position of "Hogwarts high inquisitor"
n.24:
Tumblr media
n25:
Tumblr media
n.26 "teachers are hereby banned from giving students any information that is not strictly related to the subjects they are paid to teach"
n.27 "any student found in possession of the magazine The Quibbler will be expelled"
n.28 "Dolores Jane Umbridge (High Inquisitor) has replaced Albus Dumbledore as Head of Hogwarts School of Wichcraft and Wizardry"
n.29: never enacted, concerning the use of physical punishment at Hogwarts
unnamed order for the expulsion of peeves, possibly part of decree 29, also never enacted
d) HARRY'S TRIAL
In OotP, Harry is tried for underage magic following his use of the Patronus enchantment to protect both himself and his cousin Dudley from dementors.
This is Harry's second infraction of the Decree for the Reasonble Restriction of Underage Sorcery and he is being made an example of for political reasons since, in recently claiming that Voldemort had returned, he made an enemy out of the Fudge administration. It's therefore unclear if the Decree has a two strikes and you're out policy or if Harry's prosecution is just caused by the Ministry's desire to throw the book at him. By the time Harry receives the letter informing him of this upcoming trial, he'd supposedly performed underage magic outside of Hogwarts thrice but only received a written warning once (in Cos, when said magic was actually performed by Dobby). When Harry blew up his aunt Marge in PoA, Fudge himself dismissed the event as a non-issue, claiming:
Tumblr media
The circumstances in this case being Sirius's escape from Azkaban and his presumed intention to target Harry. Of course, Harry's notoriety may have also played a factor.
Despite being a minor, Harry doesn't seem to be allowed an escort as Arthur Weasley is unable to enter the courtroom. Harry goes in alone (as does every other defendant we meet); it also appears that the trial is closed to the public.
Harry's trial is described as a "disciplinary hearing", both before it was supposed to take place in front of the Wizengamot and after:
Tumblr media
and
Tumblr media
Despite this, the hearing is presided by the Minister of Magic himself, (Cornelius Fudge). A Wizengamot trial seems to be, by nature, a criminal trial and Dumbledore, in his defense of Harry, implies it is highly unusual for disciplinary hearings to be tried as such. Indeed, before the trial was moved from Amelia Bones's office to Courtroom 10, the judgement of the head of DMLE was deemed to be sufficent.
The Wizengamot members act as a jury of sort, they are described to be:
Tumblr media
The Wizengamot appears to have elders; we are introduced to only two - Griselda Marchbanks and Tiberius Ogden - so it's unclear how many there are and, furthermore, we are never informed of their function.
Wizengamot proceedings require the presence of interrogators. In Harry's trial they are Cornelius Fudge (Minister of Magic), Amelia Bones (Head of the DMLE) and Dolores Umbridge (Senior Undersecretary to the Minister).
For some reason, Percy Weasley acts as court scribe despite it not being his job title. It's unclear wether this is an extraordinary case or if stenographers really don't exist in the magical world. (also, why do they even need stenographers when wizards have quick quotes quills?)
Dumbledore describes himself as a witness for the defense, even if he takes on a role that seems more similar to that of a defense attorney. Mrs Figg is also described as a witness but, unlike Dumbledore, she was not allowed to enter the court by herself and required an escort in order to join the proceedings (Percy Weasley).
For some reason, Dumbledore was informed of the trial's change of location, which implies he was also aware of the time and location of the original hearing. At no point in time does Harry retain his services (he is in fact surprised to see Dumbledore there) despite the fact that Dumbledore speaks for Harry throughout.
Interestingly, though the trial also serves to determine wether Harry is going to be expelled from Hogwarts, Dumbledore's judgement in his role as Headmaster is not required. The Ministry, it appears, can decide to expel students without the approval of the school's headmaster (can the headmaster expel students without ministry approval? unclear).
The proceedings seem to be very formal, as Harry is being interrogated with yes and no questions and is given no time for elucidations. Despite this, Dumbledore is allowed to have multiple very informal conversations with the minister of magic himself and at no point does he use court lingo, in complete opposition to how Umbridge, an interrogator, is treated.
Harry observes that, in order to speak, she has to lean forward, at which point the Minister states
Tumblr media
This is the only time in all of the books that this happens. The other interrogator, head of DMLE Amelia Bones, appears to speak whenever she pleases, as she interrupts Harry mid-sentence and addresses the Minister like a peer.
It's quite likely that Dumbledore was allowed free rein on account if his status and fame and his presence likely threw a wrench in what were otherwise going to be very strict bureaucratic proceedings.
Finally, Wizengamot rulings are made by show of hands and it doesn't look like they need to be initiated by the person heading the proceedings. For Harry's trial, it's Amelia Bones that calls onto the jury's decision and not Fudge.
e) OTHER TRIALS
The first trial we see in the books happens at least six months after the first wizarding war, since that's the time it took for Alastor Moody to track down the defendant, Igor Karkaroff.
What Harry witnesses (by wading through Dumbledore's pensieve memories) is not, however, Karkaroff's sentencing but a follow-up hearing to determine wether he is in possession of information that may lead to the capture of more Death Eaters. Karkaroff is taken from Azkaban in order to do so and he is accompanied/carried by dementors.
The case takes place in open court, as Harry sees that "rows and rows of witches and wizards were seated around every wall on what seemed to be benches rising in levels"; these proceedings, in stark difference to Harry's, are open to the public (possible proof n.1 that this is not taking place in front of the Wizengamot but in a different court).
At this moment in time, Dumbledore could very well be chief warlock of the wizengamot (we don't know when he was instated) but he sits among the spectators (possible proof n.2 ). Despite being a member of the public, Dumbledore is seen interrupting proceedings without permission (to defend Snape, whom Karkaroff implicates). Because it's Dumbledore doing it, it's again unclear wether this is permitted or if the court is making an exception for him.
This first trial is, like all the trials Harry witnesses indirectly, presided by Barty Crouch sr., who at this point in time heads the DMLE. (possible proof n.3, maybe all wizengamot trials are presided by the minister and all council trials are headed by the DMLE chief?)
The Second trial Harry sees in Dumbledore's memories is that of Ludo Bagman (for passing information to Rockwood, whom Karkaroff implicated in the first memory). Dumbledore is once again not there in any official capacity and is sitting among the public; the proceedings are implied to take place at a later date, as Harry remarks that Crouch's appearance has changed.
We join Ludo in his trial's sentencing phase and indeed Harry notices the presence of a jury, which is not described as having the monogrammed plum robes of Wizengamot members (possible proof n.4 although, since the events take place in GoF and Harry's trial occurs in OotP, jkr may have simply done an oopsie).
This trial seems to be more informal, as the crowd appears to behave quite rowdily (with no intervention) and a member of the jury waylays the proceedings in order to compliment Ludo's flying at his most recent Quidditch match. This is most likely because of both public sentiment and the perceived innocence of the defendant.
Notably, Ludo's trial is the only one that we know for sure was attended by the press, as Harry notices a young Rita Skeeter sitting near Dumbledore.
The final trial witnessed by Harry appears to once again be a sentencing, that of Barty Crouch jr, Bellatrix Lestrange and the brothers Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange (who were seemingly all tried together and received a single sentence). Harry once again remarks that Crouch Sr's looks have changed, helping us determine that time has passed between the memories. This sentencing is once again done through show of hands by a jury (who, again, is not described as wearing Wizengamot robes) and Dumbledore is still sitting among the public.
Despite it being another sentencing, it appears that the defendants were already being detained in Azkaban as they are accompanied by six dementors, unlike Ludo Bagman, though this may be due to the difference in the severity of their actions; Bagman was seemingly a free man when he entered the courtroom as he'd participated in a quidditch match not one week before.
It's during his trial that the Council of Magical Law is mentioned by name (the only time in the books). Since all three of the pensieve trials share multiple similarities - way more than they do with Harry's- this, together with the evidence shown above, leads me to conclude that
1 All three trials take place before the same court
2 the Council of Magical Law is not necessarily another the name for the Wizengamot and therefore
3 there's at least two different courts codified in the magical law system
Of course, these discrepancies may very well be oopsies on jkr's part. Although Dumbledore's role as chief Warlock can be ascertained as early as PS (thanks to the header on Harry's acceptance letter), the Wizengamot doesn't get mentioned by name until OotP. Furthermore, the pensieve trials and Harry's take place in different books which means jkr may have added on to the concept in the interim.
f) CONCLUSION
There is none, I have nothing else to say. Class is dismissed, I need to go have a lie-down.

Union pensions are funding private equity attacks on workers
Tumblr media
On October 7–8, I'm in Milan to keynote Wired Nextfest.
Tumblr media
If end-stage capitalism has a motto, it's this: "Stop hitting yourself." The great failure of "voting with your wallet" is that you're casting ballots in a one party system (The Capitalism Party), and the people with the thickest wallets get the most votes.
During the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese state would bill the families of executed dissidents for the ammunition used to execute their loved ones:
https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-the-Chinese-government-makes-the-families-of-executed-people-pay-for-the-cost-of-bullets
In end-stage capitalism, the dollars we spend to feed ourselves are used to capture the food supply and corrupt our political process:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/04/dont-let-your-meat-loaf/#meaty-beaty-big-and-bouncy
And the dollars we save for retirement are flushed into the stock market casino, a game that is rigged against us, where we are always the suckers at the table:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/25/derechos-humanos/#are-there-no-poorhouses
Everywhere and always, we are financing our own destruction. It's quite a Mr Gotcha moment:
https://thenib.com/mister-gotcha/
Now, anything that can't go on forever will eventually stop. We are living through a broad, multi-front counter-revolution to Reaganomics and neoliberal Democratic Party sellouts. The FTC and DOJ Antitrust Division are dragging Big Tech and Big Meat and Big Publishing into court. We're seeing bans on noncompete clauses, and high-profile government enforcers are publicly pledging never to work for corporate law-firms when they quit public service:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/09/nein-nein/#everything-is-miscellaneous
And of course, there's the reinvigoration of the labor movement! Hot Labor Summer is now Perpetual Labor September, with 75,000 Kaiser workers walking out alongside the UAW, SAG-AFTRA and 2,350 other groups of workers picketing, striking or protesting:
https://striketracker.ilr.cornell.edu/
But capitalism still gets a lick in. Union pension plans are some of the most important investors in private equity funds. Your union pension dollars are probably funding the union-busting, child-labor-employing, civilization-destroying Gordon Gecko LARPers who are also evicting you from the rental they bought and turned into a slum, and will then murder you in a hospice that they bought and turned into a slaughterhouse:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/26/death-panels/#what-the-heck-is-going-on-with-CMS
Writing for The American Prospect, Rachel Phua rounds up the past, present and future of union pension funds backing private equity monsters:
https://prospect.org/labor/2023-10-04-workers-funding-misery-private-equity-pension-funds/
Private equity and hedge funds have destroyed 1.3 million US jobs:
https://united4respect.org/press-release/people-who-work-at-walmart-sears-amazon-formerly-toys-r-us-more-join-forces-together-as-united-for-respect-2-2-2-2-5-3/
They buy companies and then illegally staff them with children:
https://www.dol.gov/newsroom/releases/whd/whd20230217-1
They lobby against the minimum wage:
https://pestakeholder.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Insire-Brands-memo-on-15-wage.pdf
They illegally retaliate against workers seeking to unionize their jobsite:
https://www.hoteldive.com/news/dc-hotel-workers-enlist-us-representatives-to-fight-sofitel-union-busting/650396/
And they couldn't do it without union pension funds. Public service union pensions have invested $650 million with PE funds. In 2001, the share of public union pensions invested in PE was 3.5%; today, it's 13%:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B0vv26VEFmwtfw5ur6dSDMY8NftvZKij/
Giant public union funds like CalPERS are planning massive increases in their contributions to PE:
https://www.calpers.ca.gov/page/newsroom/calpers-news/2023/calpers-preliminary-investment-return-fiscal-year-2022-23
This results in some ghastly and ironic situations. Aramark used funds from a custodian's union to bid against that union's members for contracts, in an attempt to break the union and force the workers to take a paycut to $11/hour:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-11-20/pension-fund-gains-mean-worker-pain-as-aramark-cuts-pay
Blackstone's investors include the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS). The PE ghouls who sucked Toys R Us dry were funded by Texas teachers.
Then there's KKR, one of the most rapacious predators of the PE world. Half of the investors in KKR's Global Infrastructure Investors IV fund are public sector pension funds. Those workers' money were spent to buy up Refresco (Arizona Iced Tea, Tropicana juices, etc), a transaction that immediately precipitated a huge spike in on-the-job accidents as KKR cut safety and increased tempo:
https://www.osha.gov/ords/imis/establishment.inspection_detail?id=1675674.015
Petsmart is the poster-child for PE predation. The company uses TRAPs ("TrainingRepaymentAgreementProvision") clauses to recreate indentured servitude, forcing workers to pay thousands of dollars to quit their jobs:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/04/its-a-trap/#a-little-on-the-nose
Why would a Petsmart employee want to quit? Petsmart's PE owner is BC Partners, and under BC's management, workers have been forced to work impossible hours while overseeing cruel animal abuse, including starving sick animals to death rather than euthanizing them, and then being made to sneak them into dumpsters on the way home from work so Petsmart doesn't have to pay for cremation. 24 of BC Partners' backers are public pension funds, including CalSTRS and the NYC Employees' Retirement System:
https://prospect.org/culture/books/2023-06-02-days-of-plunder-morgenson-rosner-ballou-review/
PE buyouts are immediately followed by layoffs. One in five PE acquisitions goes bankrupt. Unions should not be investing in PE. But the managers of these funds defend the practice, saying they "facilitate dialog" with the PE bosses on workers' behalf.
This isn't total nonsense. Once upon a time, public pension fund managers put pressure on investees to force them to divest from Apartheid South Africa and tobacco companies. Even today, public pensions have successfully applied leverage to get fund managers to drop Russian investments after the invasion of Ukraine. And public pensions pulled out of the private prison sector, tanking the valuation of some of the largest players.
But there's no evidence that this leverage is being applied to pensions' PE billions. It's not like PE is a great deal for these pensions. PE funds don't reliably outperform the market, especially after PE bosses' sky-high fees are clawed back:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3623820
Pension funds could match or beat their PE returns by sticking the money in a low-load Vanguard index tracker. What's more, PE is getting worse, pioneering new scams like inflating the value of companies after they buy and strip-mine them, even though there's no reason to think anyone would buy these hollow companies at the price that the PE companies assign to them for bookkeeping purposes:
https://www.institutionalinvestor.com/article/2bstqfcskz9o72ospzlds/opinion/why-does-private-equity-get-to-play-make-believe-with-prices
To inject a little verisimilitude into this obvious fantasy, PE companies sell their portfolio companies to themselves at inflated prices, in a patently fraudulent shell-game:
https://www.ft.com/content/646d00f4-af5d-4267-a436-54fb3bc1697b
What's more, PE funds aren't just bad bosses, they're also bad landlords. PE-backed funds have scooped up an appreciable fraction of America's housing stock, transforming good rentals into slums:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/27/extraordinary-popular-delusions/#wall-street-slumlords
PE is really pioneering a literal cradle-to-grave immiseration strategy. First, they gouge you on your kids' birth:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/27/crossing-a-line/#zero-fucks-given
Then, they slash your wages and steal from your paycheck:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3465723
Then, they evict you from your home:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/05/vulture-capitalism/#distressed-assets
And then they murder you as part of a scam they're running on Medicare:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/05/any-metric-becomes-a-target/#hca
As the labor movement flexes its muscle, it needs to break this connection. Workers should not be paying for the bullet that their bosses put through their skulls.

goon | chapter one | bucktommy
check out the hockey glossary here read from the beginning or read chapter one here
It takes Tommy a few breathless seconds to remember to skate in and hug the rest of his team, and another five to realize that technically the assist is his. He stopped caring about stats so much the second year his time in the box exceeded his time on ice for more than five games out of the season, but it sits there, in the back of his mind, his name next to Buckley’s on the score sheet.
There’s a rush that comes with division rivalry games, a certain something in the air when the crowd noise rushes in after the anthem, a call for blood and guts and gore and glory.
Tommy’s been in the league for almost two decades. He’s played for every division in the league, at one point or another. This isn’t even his first time in the central, although the configuration of teams is different than the last time.
Sometimes one team is shit (more often than not he’s on that side of it) and the other is on a tear. Sometimes they’re battling it out in four-point games to keep their points lead in the division — or knock the other team down to second. Sometimes it’s a scrape to pull out the wildcard spot. Sometimes the game itself is meaningless but they’ve played each other often enough that there’s friction. Sometimes there’s just one fucking guy on the opposition that the fanbase harbors some deep resentment for.
And this one actually means something — there’s some extra bad blood between these two teams, a star goalie with a grudge on the far end of the ice, three first round matchups in the last ten years, a run of wins that was bringing tonight’s opponent a little too close for comfort to the Avs divisional points cushion.
Tommy shifts his weight and settles the nerves, accepts the smack to the back of his helmet, and watches Binnington throw a fit between the pipes when the stripes don’t whistle the play dead and call an icing when the puck trickles in behind his net.
They’re five minutes in and everyone’s getting testy. He can feel it.
This is where Tommy does his best work.
It’d been a task, ten years ago, a part of the job he’d accepted because he was good in a fight and fully capable of taking a few punches. Under the thumb of the old boys club it’d just been expected of him — the ability to throw his weight around was what had kept him from complete obscurity in a lower league that would have worn him down much sooner. Tommy’s fists and his ability to drop his shoulder just in time to knock a guy flat on his ass were the only things that mattered when his agent settled him down with two offers, a few years into the league, and he’d chosen the team most likely to make his dad proud.
Never mind that his dad had come to three games when Tommy was a bright eyed rookie, seen Tommy get his ass handed to him by a man twice his size, and stopped bothering to show up.
He’d turned that around, in recent years. Longer stints with the affiliate teams, less time under the microscopic eye of the national press (even as a role player he’d had his moments under that eye) — he’d learned when to pull his punches, when to turn the other cheek, and when to lock his ankles and aim for the fucking chest. He had friends up and down the continent who knew him as the guy who’d take them all out to dinner after a bad loss, find something stupid and entertaining for them to do after, and then go into the next game with a chip on his fucking shoulder.
There were three kids with insane star power in the league who had him on speed dial even though he hadn’t played with them for a year or more, because for some fucking reason he had the ability to talk them off a ledge when the pressure drove them towards it.
He’d never tell a soul that Crosby still sent him gym selfies so they could compare the relative size and plumpness of their ass during the offseason.
There was still a reverence for real enforcers, in the league, even if they’d fallen by the wayside as teams got smaller and quicker. They were more a deterrent than anything else these days, but that usually meant Tommy got to lumber around on the ice for a few minutes a game, remembering what it had felt like the first time he’d laced his skates and stepped out to a roaring crowd, before he took another dumb penalty and spent the next forty-five minutes riding the bench. He’d been instructed not to take any dumb penalties, tonight, because St. Louis didn’t tend to get sloppy until the game was on the line.
Thirty-six minutes in, Schenn takes a chop at Diaz’s knees under the guise of a poke check and the home crowd gets loud, and ornery.
Nash smacks him on the shoulder on their way back down the tunnel for the third, eyes a little wild, and Tommy immediately recalls the old highlight reels of Nash shaking hair out of his eyes while he squared off against a guy twice his size, motor-mouthing his way into getting the other guy to take the first swing. Minnesotans and their right hooks weren’t something to fuck around with. Too much time in the cold not to have a little crazy in them.
Tommy rolls his tongue over his teeth, tilts his head to where Diaz and Buckley are bent over the boards together on the bench, already prepared to hop out the moment Bannister tries to get a matchup that’ll tilt in the Blues favor.
Nash sends him out with the rest of the fourth line, and Tommy doesn’t waste any time.
It’s immediately clear that they’ve all been warned to keep level heads. Schenn won’t engage, Buchnevich barely acknowledges Tommy when he hip checks him into his own bench — he goes ass over tea kettle and Tommy gets nothing more than a few shifty looks and some smack talk from the guys sitting.
There’s an easy way around that, though.
Tommy clambers back over the boards and waits out the next shift, practically vibrating with it when a shot pings off the crossbar and Greenway skates right through Binnington’s crease chasing after it.
Kyrou tries to take out Buckley against the boards, looks livid when Buck skates just free of it, and Buck does some ankle breaking in a rush to the goal. It hits the post, and when the whistle gets blown fifteen seconds later Tommy watches level heads not prevail when Binner says something snippy to Kyrou that has him rolling his eyes on the way back to the bench.
It takes another minute and a half for Nash to set up the line matches the way he wants them, but as Greenway skates off in relief and Schenn’s line stays stuck in their own zone spinning their wheels, Bobby smacks a thick hand down on Tommy’s shoulder. “Kinard, you’re up!”
Tommy takes an awkward pass once he’s past the blue line and goes full tilt towards the net. Full tilt for Tommy isn’t anything special, but it’s not what the Blues are expecting, and most of them have been out for two plus minutes at this point, hemmed in by their third and fourth lines just shoveling the puck back in every time it nears the blue line.
The snow shower he aims at the goal, half an inch into the crease when he fully stops, isn’t anything to write home about, but it has it’s intended effect. Already short on patience, Binnington watches Schenn intercept and send the puck careening down the ice — a third icing in a row — and lashes out with the butt end of his stick, a glancing blow Tommy laughs at as the rest of the players start to circle up at the whistle. Tommy’s laugh pisses him off. The laugh pisses him off so much.
It’s so fucking easy to rattle him when he’s already two goals down. There’s some shoving, a few hockey hugs to keep things from escalating, but Panikkar has apparently cottoned on to Tommy’s plan, and he says something under his breath that has Sundquist in his face, and Binnington skating around behind the net in irritation while the zebras break up a few of the more reticent shoving matches.
Tommy wins about one face-off out of every fifty, but that’s not the reason he’s bending across from Schenn now at the circle.
“We could end this before he loses all his cool and breaks his stick on the pipes,” Tommy goads, and the linesman with the puck rolls his eyes towards Schenn expectantly. The other man shifts, readjusts the grip on his stick. “Or I could just keep taunting him for something that isn’t even his fault, this time.”
Schenn’s not a particularly bad dude, just a little gun shy about fighting when his coach has clearly told them all not to engage.
Tommy wants him to fucking engage.
Schenn waits for the puck to drop, and miraculously, it’s Tommy who scoops it up to a fresh-faced Buckley just in time for the man to wind up and sneak it through about four bodies on it’s way over Binnington’s shoulder.
And then Schenn gets sloppy again, a check into the boards that has Panikkar limping back towards the bench while the crowd boos the refs — no call, again, which is fucking typical and normally Tommy’d be in his face about it, ready for the unsportsmanlike just ready to tumble off the refs tongue, but not tonight, tonight he’s got other plans — and Tommy doesn’t give Schenn any time to think about it when Nash sends him out in the immediate chaos.
He catches Kyrou mid-ice with his head down, a shoulder right to the chest that sends him reeling back, skates leaving the ground as he crashes backwards, and Schenn is on him in the next five seconds, gloves off and a resigned look in his eyes. Tommy grins and shifts his weight back, tossing his own gloves and reaching for the neck of Schenn’s sweater.
In the heat of the moment, man to man, the noise of the crowd always dies away, blood pounding in his ears and his entire focus on keeping his weight balanced and his fists loose. He’s been a heavy-weight for over half his career, and Schenn knows he’s outmatched but someone has to answer the bell.
There’s a ref circling them, and Tommy gets three right hooks in before Schenn can even get a hand out to hold Tommy back.
Hen’s gonna be pissed when she sees the state of his hands, but Tommy doesn’t really care, all that much, as he tightens his grip and yanks him close enough for an uppercut aimed at his ribs.
The refs break in before Schenn gets a hit, and the roar of the crowd rushes back in, loud, raucous, the mob appeased as Tommy skates his way to the box with a grin on his face. He’s a little disappointed that they’d broken it up so quickly, but — he’s probably got twenty-five pounds on Schenn, so fair enough.
Diaz scores a shorthanded goal three minutes into the major and Chim holds the line through the deluge of pissed off Blues who are now down four goals.
Tommy spends about ten seconds out of the box before the refs assess him a game misconduct for tapping his glove along the visitors side gate, and he accepts it with all the grace he can muster, smacking his fist into a screaming kids palm as he heads off down the hall.
The cool off doesn’t take him as long at it used to — sometime in the first ten years of his career he’d figured out how to shake off the hotheaded temper that made him so fucking good at getting under people’s skin, and by the time the rest of the team returns with a victory on their shoulders he’s relaxed and loose-limbed again.
Diaz makes a beeline for him, smacking his bare chest, hands curling over his shoulders so he can shake him a little, and he gets a few hoots and hollers as the rest of the team trickles back in. Someone names Tommy third star, but Nash has a rule about keeping up appearances, and he had technically been tossed from the game, so. He keeps his seat and waits until Buckley and Chim both return from taking their bow.
They’ve got a tradition, going back a few years now, a game puck tossed from player to player throughout the season for whatever the hell the previous recipient wants to acknowledge someone for. Tommy’s spent a few weeks hyping up the recipient with the rest of the team, but tonight Diaz calls for silence and every eye in the room swivels towards Tommy.
“Next time we’re getting you the full Gordie Howe,” comes the concise speech, and Tommy chuckles when Diaz leans in for a half-shake, half-hug where he admits in an undertone that Binner had definitely done his best to hold on to this particular puck at the game horn, so Tommy had better appreciate his efforts in acquiring it.
It’s not even March, but there’s a string of tension running through the whole group of them, a line of unspoken expectation as their home record extends to fifteen games — but as they trickle off to the showers with pats on the back and the giddy adrenaline of another win, Tommy can feel something brewing in the room.
He’s halfway through stretches, twenty minutes later, when Panikkar parks up next to him and knocks his knee against Tommy’s.
“That was some pretty decent work, Kinard,” Ravi says, like he hasn’t spent two weeks annoyed that Tommy can’t keep up with him when he’s on a breakaway, barely holding his tongue when Tommy lumbers down the ice after him. Diaz has made some noise, in recent days, about running suicide drills at the start of optionals, and Tommy is absolutely gonna get his ass handed to him. He’ll be there with bells, but he’s gonna be feeling that shit for weeks.
“Not so bad yourself, kid,” Tommy tells him, and Ravi ducks his head around a grin.
“Hen’s pissed I didn’t keep my mouth shut,” he admits, and gestures to his ribs, where Tommy can already see some nasty bruising. Tommy cocks an eyebrow.
“I’d have gotten them there on my own.”
Ravi’s grin brightens, and when he stands, Tommy can’t quite help the way he wants to stand as well, maybe give this kid a noogie, tease him about the height difference for a second. He’d grown up without brothers, but he’s found about a million and two in his time playing up and down the continent. “It’s more fun when you’ve got the whole team to move it along.”
He’s halfway out the door when he spins on his heel to give Tommy another look. “Hey, you know Gardiner’s had it out for Buckley for like, four years, right?”
Tommy shifts. Panikkar doesn’t need to know that he’s had the calendar date circled in his mind for three weeks, now, since the moment he’d hopped on the plane to Denver. He’s not going to admit to knowing every single guy in the league who’s ever set their sights on 18. He’s certainly not going to admit to spending most of his first evening in his rental watching highlight reels of Buckley (and Diaz) until he’d fallen asleep on his surprisingly comfortable sectional. He knows enemy number one for every game from now until the end of the season, but he knows Buckley’s best of all.
It’s what they’d brought him over for, Tommy rationalizes, again, and if he spends the drive home thinking about the wide slash of Evan Buckley’s smile when he’d skated in to celebrate Buckley’s goal, no one but Tommy has to know.

Since I see you also like Psychonauts- have you also considered a LTWW Psychonauts au?
Obviously in this case the detective is part of the Psychonauts group- (maybe the old scientist guy is the head of whatever division the detective is in,) maybe the detectives speciality power is clairvoyancy. (Ofc if you have a better idea I’m all ears)
In this case their mission is to infiltrate the mind of a certain serial killer.. the only problem is, once inside Waldo’s mind, he isn’t so eager to let the detective out again…
(I imagine Waldo’s mind to be similar to the meat circus, just striped insanity. Whatever memory faults the detective finds are weird and confusing.)
Yeeeessss, a merger of my obsessions!
The Detective I see doing a powerful Psi-Blast and a past version of Clairvoyance, where they are able to see what happened with an object by touching it, an imperative ability for a psychic detective. I see him as being a division of the Psychonauts that works with local law enforcement to solve crimes on a larger scale.
Oh man, going into Waldo's mind is gonna be like that film, the Cell. One big trip that is possibly themed on elimination/death, morality/judgement, and clowns/grandiosity, so a deadly courtroom that's also a circus perhaps (or that game We Happy Few)? It will be extremely crowded regardless.
I think the twist will be that Waldo himself is psychic, and extremely powerful, enough that he's able to hide it and spring it on them. His powers would be Time Manipulation (in which he's able to make himself move really fast), a form of Mental Projection to create his doubles (extremely advanced, his doubles are perfect copies), Confusion/Hypnotism ala the Noodler, Invisibility (maybe) and the rare Teleportation.
Im trying now to imagine designs for them that would fit the Psychonauts' art style. The Detective is probably gonna look similar in design to Boyd Cooper, and Waldo is gonna be closer to looking like Dr. Loboto.
Imma have to draw this later...

Mor Primarch au facts
Konrad Curze is not allowed on Remnant after what he did to numerous Whitefang hold outs.
Another reason why The relics were separated because Jaune learned that they can call the brothers back.
Salem's followers were hunted down and most were killed. Watts however managed to negotiate himself off Remnant in the service of a far off noble house.
Cinder has vanished off world, but she is relentlessly hunted by Remnant Knights and Thousand sons. Her maiden powers however were taken back from her in due part to a Ritual Magnus did. She has yet to be found.
Emerald was given a pardon due to her being crucial in Salem's downfall. As such, she has had her records cleared and given a new identity.
Mercury was taken to be trained by the Officio Assassinorum due to his skills. He didn't willfully go.
The white Fang extremists are gone. Every member killed or imprisoned by the enforcers of the Primarch's laws. Fulgrim himself led such a strike against them while Konrad Simply mopped what remained.
The academies are now strictly a place of learning, due to the need for hunters no longer required per the Emperor's orders. Mostly Due to their Pysker powers.
Jaune still has hunters trained however, despite his father's wishes. Hunters are the specialized units within the Remnant Military that only answer to the Primarch and Legion alone. Plus, Grimm are still a thing while not as prominent are still a nuisance.
The Thousand sons have an abundance of libraries and academies on Remnant while Remnant does the same on Prospero. A type of culture exchange
A grand library was created by Jaune, Magnus, Perturabo, and Fulgrim. Here all the knowledge gathered from conquered worlds is kept, copied, and cataloged for future generations. It was kept on Prospero, it was named the Library of Wonders.
Jaune had plans for after the Crusade, to create a garden world filled with every known flower, a gift to Pyrrha and place for their descendents to enjoy.
Remnant is a trading power house due in thanks to Weiss and her family. However, despite her protests, Jaune has regulated all trading onto a planet outside their the cosmic cloud barrier that surrounds Remnant.
No Imperial is allowed on Remnant, only those from Legion homeworlds are allowed and even some of those are banned.
The citizens that are from the homeworlds of Leman Russ, Konrad Curze, Ferrus Manus, Lorgar, Angron, and Mortarion are banned due to various reasons and incidents that Have almost resulted in loss of life.
Nobles have tried to strong arm their way onto Remnant due to the status of it being a civilized world and almost considered a paradise world where the humans don't have to worry about much. Plus the "exotic beauties" on the world.
None have succeeded, the last one nearly killed by Jaune himself.
Jaune has tasked a special science division to find a way to not only close existing routes within the cosmic cloud at will but to effectively control it defensively.
Jaune is somewhat paranoid, another reason for the creation of the Iron Dragons was so they could combat the space wolves due to what happened to the 2nd primarch as Russ's hands. Infact, Jaune has started to ensure his marines can fight against other marines effectively. Though this is simply considered an unconfirmed rumor.
Jaune does the war games between legions not only to hopefully foster good relationships but to learn each Legions tactics. Even memorizing various battle plans and strategies used by the others. This hasn't gone unnoticed by Horus or Guilliman.

Transiting Venus enters Capricorn
Tuesday, January 23 - Friday, February 16, 2024
Venus transits are back to being on the “brisk” side, lasting about 25 days in total length, for the rest of 2024. She’s a trigger now, not an instigator. Transiting Venus will mean a little bit more if you happen to be Venusian (Sun, Moon, &/or an angle in Taurus or Libra; Sun &/or Moon in the 2nd or 7th Houses; natal Venus in close aspect to the Sun, Moon, &/or an angle). But for the rest of us, Venus will need to set off something the slower-moving planets are trying to instigate.
After the adventures of the “Wild Wild West” Venus/Sagittarius, we’re looking for a little control and discipline. Less flailing around, more planning and strategizing. This can be a very snobbish time, especially if our natal Venuses (Veni?) tend to operate on the shallower side.
Bear in mind that the transiting South Node - where we’re getting something wrong - is in Libra, which is ruled by Venus. We need to be a little critical of Venus themes and processes right now, and use Venus’ transits as opportunities to clean up our act.
Art - We can get very snobbish and turn art into a way to enforce “class” divisions. Or, going the “Capricorn miser” route, we disdain all artistic expression as a waste of time, money, and effort. In more positive use of the energy, we put a lot of planning into our artistic expression, and we’re patient and careful about the execution. This is good for launching longer-term projects. (Like the next blanket I plan to crochet.)
Beauty - Sometimes we’ll go out of our way to get ugly; we can’t resist showing our contempt for “appearances.” Other times we twist that Capricorn key phrase “I use” and wield our beauty as a weapon of manipulation. We can try to move beyond a definition of “beauty” as what’s on the surface - &/or make every effort to find the beauty in nature.
Love - This can get transactional: “What’s in it for me?” Sometimes we play games: “If I behave horribly, will they still love me?” This can be an opportunity to prove that love is responsible, patient, and in it for the long haul.
Money - The stereotypes are the miser with all the cash stuffed in the mattress, and the CFO intent on eternally-increasing profits. Dragonish, really, petty little Smaugs all of them. Better to invest with the longer-term in view: we can make improvements to the home, the wardrobe, etc.
Give about a day or so on either side of the following aspects - maybe longer if any of them connect with something in your birth chart.
Saturday, January 27 - Sunday, January 28:
Venus/Capricorn sextile Saturn/Pisces, 6°00’
Venus/Capricorm trine Jupiter/Taurus, 6°59’
Really, really nice; if this dings something in your birth chart I am extremely jealous! The three planets are in a three-way mutual reception - Venus/Cap is disposited by Saturn/Pisces, which is disposited by Jupiter/Taurus, which is disposited by Venus/Cap. This strengthens the aspects considerably. Hard work and good luck join hands.
Monday, February 5 - Venus/Capricorn square Chiron/Eris, 16°10’. Hurt feelings. We may be too cold, emotionally; we may bargain and negotiate in bad faith. If we’ve hurt someone, we should swallow our pride and make amends.
Wednesday, February 7:
Venus/Capricorn square North Node/Aries and South Node/Libra, 18°53’
Venus/Capricorn trine Uranus/Taurus, 19°08’
Venus/Capricorn trine Juno Rx/Virgo, 19°23’
We have an Earth sign grand trine but Venus is square the Nodes. And remember that Venus rules Libra, which is the South Node’s sign. Some of us are going to realize how we get in our own way every time we “go along to get along,” while others will double down on that. Flowing aspects (like trines) aren’t necessarily good aspects - with this one, any social-climbing is going to come back and bite us in the butt. Instead of trying to scheme and manipulate our way into some kind of high-status relationship, let’s try to find ways to improve everyone’s status quo.
Sunday, February 11 - Venus/Capricorn square Eris/Aries, 24°14’. We’re frustrated - perhaps because we didn’t get our own way; perhaps we tried to manipulate matters and got caught; perhaps because “nobody appreciates all the sacrifices I’ve made for them.” Maybe we could learn to do someone a favor without ulterior motives?
Tuesday, February 13 - Venus/Capricorn sextile Neptune/Pisces, 26°09’. Really beautiful. We’re able to put those Neptunian daydreams and fantasies into concrete form. A very romantic Valentine’s Day Eve, with a traditional flavoring.
Note that Venus will enter Aquarius with the proverbial bang: a conjunction to Pluto.

Hi! I've been going through the current demo, and I've always picked the changeling option simply because all the other backstories tended to squick me out. I saw people talking about the knife scene though, which looked funny, so decided to do a short playthrough of the serial killer backstory. I was a little confused when I actually read through it, as our murders are specifically defined as being for revenge and don't necessarily fall under the typical idea of what's considered a serial killer (which usually involves more ambiguous motives such as sexual predation or thrill seeking). I ended up looking this up, but the internet could not give me a proper answer lmao. The best definition I could find for this would be multiple accounts of revenge homicide. The definition you use in the IF is correct based on the US Law and legal definition I could find. But all the additional info I could find only discussed typical serial killer cases with the murdered victims not being known to the killer. I wanted to ask if this is why you ended up defining the background this way and what you might have come up with during your own research regarding this! (This entire thing has actually started to drive me crazy, I didn't realize the black hole of definitions of murder would come back to haunt me. Why don't we have a word for multiple counts of revenge murder?!? I would consider this to fall under a kind of vigilantism but I couldn't find the word that corresponded to this type of murder.)
Yeah, the Changeling MC is definitely the most "did no wrong" (at least as far as the secret is concerned) version of the MC's background.
Tumblr media
So... the game is using the term serial killer (instead of the more technically correct "serial murderer") since that is probably by far the most well known term by the reader that applies to that particular MC. It also nicely telegraphs the tone of the murders - stalking over an extended amount of time in varying locations.
What you mentioned about sexual predation and such is called "classic" serial murder by criminologists, but that isn't the only type nor are there any actual intent/motive mentioned in its working definition. The "thrill-seeking" type also tends to converge with "spree killings" and there are other motives as well such as profit (capital murder) and revenge (revenge homicide).
If there's some more esoteric legal jargon (or some convoluted criminology-based model) that refers to a crime that is both serial murder and revenge homicide, I didn't find.
I didn't dig too much deeper because that's not a term that the MC would probably even be using since none of them are lawyers. The closest would be the detective MC (who is neither a criminologist nor assigned to homicide division) and they'd be using the National Institute of Justice's definition which is what is referenced in the game. (You'll get a bit more on that from the detective MC once the serial killer subplot goes into high gear later on).
I mostly go by the official documentation of the FBI (since serial killer MC's crimes are interstate, they're the ones who'd be coming after them) which is also readily available.
And the FBI's quote here is...
"Over the past twenty years, law enforcement and experts from a number of varying disciplines have attempted to identify specific motivations for serial murderers and to apply those motivations to different typologies developed for classifying serial murderers. "Most typologies are too cumbersome to be utilized by law enforcement during an active serial murder investigation, and they may not be helpful in identifying an offender."

10, 11, and 12 ?
Thank you for the ask <33
10. Favorite & least favorite character in Apocalypse?
Favorite? Jill Valentine. I am also a huge Jill fangirl when it comes to the games and love both versions of 3 to death, so not really a surprise there. Sienna Guillory was the perfect choice for her. She kicks ass but also has that moment of emotional vulnerability with Peyton's death. If you've ever listened to the commentary, Sienna goes on about how important that moment was for her character. Love when she walks up to Alice until the barrel of her pistol is pressed into her neck to protect Peyton, zero shits given. The line "Those were some pretty slick moves back there. I'm good, but I'm not that good," is burned into my brain.
And on a vaguely unrelated note, the fact that Alice shields Angie with the fire blanket but lets Jill go flying into a table is really funny to me.
For the sake of not repeating my easy answer to part of the next question, I'll say Major Cain is my least favorite. I do like the added stuff about how he knew One from the novels, and how many characters we see in the security division wouldn't have been hired if not for him, but we don't get that in Apocalypse so he's the most boring villain we get to see Imo.
I would've loved if those characters reacted to Cain's face if they learned that he decided the quarantine efforts were to be abandoned.
11. Favorite & least favorite character in Extinction?
Favorite? K-Mart! That kid is queer-coded as hell. The scene where she gives Alice one of her rainbow bracelets is pretty adorable. Claire says everyone was freaked out by Alice's crazy mind powers, but K-Mart is just waiting in the room for her to wake up like "Hi :D" lol. The part where she cries and hugs Carlos goodbye always gets me too.
Least favorite? Dr. J. Isaacs. I am his number 1 hater, I'm pretty sure. I dislike him more than Alexander Isaacs or his other weird clone with the same name. It feels like he directly put Alice through more pain and bs than either of them. He was also obsessed with her in a way they weren't, going so far as to clone her over a hundred times to try and replicate her, filling a ditch with their dead bodies when they weren't good enough. It wasn't just about the Super Undead and altering how the T-virus affected people, man. And he only went to kill the real Alice when it became apparent he couldn't keep her leashed.
12. Favorite & least favorite character in Afterlife?
Favorite? Luther West. Luther is just a cool dude. Incredibly friend-shaped. Good heart. "Resident superstar".
We're talking about Afterlife here, but I do wanna bring up how I love him being a part of Wesker's strike team in Retribution. Leon and Barry have military/law enforcement backgrounds, Sergei is the tech guy, Tony is probably military or some shit, and Luther is simply a dude who used to play basketball. He's here because he heard his friend Alice is here. Wesker probably picked him because his presence would make her agree quicker.
Least favorite? Bennett Sinclair. He's one of those weasely, pathetic bad guys and I'm generally not crazy about those types of characters. Shocked Wesker didn't kill him or shove him in a tube with the others when he arrived on the Arcadia. He isn't the type to be like "Hm... yes... I need help handling Project Alice, whom I slammed around easily in Tokyo and rendered essentially human after neutralizing her T-virus abilities, and Chris and Claire Redfield, two humans. More specifically, I need the help of this snivelly loser." I mean, Wesker did lose in the end, but he sees himself as too superior to have foreseen an outcome like that, and I don't see what benefit he got out of allowing Bennett to help him. Not having to move from his cool bad guy pose in his chair and lift a gun at Alice himself?

It was late in the day when the Shizuoka Yakuza Boss, head of the Kito-gumi, and today’s birthday girl, Sakura Kito received yet another birthday gift. She was currently relaxing in the living room of her large mansion when one of her subordinates nervously came up to her holding an assortment of gifts, raising an eyebrow, the subordinate stuttered an explanation about how these gifts were from her and that they didn’t have a note or a card which in of itself was immediately a red flag, Sakura ordered the subordinate to open the gifts (she wasn’t scared, of course, but she figured she’d let the subordinate get caught in the potential crossfire than her). They did so dutifully and opened the first gift which revealed to be…
Tumblr media
A couple of Cherry Blossom flower plushies
Opening the second gift revealed to be…
Tumblr media
A Cherry Blossom bonsai tree
And finally, the last gift revealed to be…
Tumblr media
A plate of Cherry Blossom themed mochi on a stick.
Confirming that the gifts were a danger, Sakura looked through all of them before looking back into the box and finding a card, pulling it out, she flipped it open and read the contents inside.
‘Uh, happy birthday, Sakura!
You probably don’t remember me (honestly it’d probably be better if you didn’t) but I wanted to thank you for quite literally saving my life that one time, this will probably be the last time we’ll see each other but I just wanted to show my gratitude after all this time. I hope you have a good day though! Kick back, relax, and enjoy the last day of spring!
— J.K.’
Happy Birthday Sakura! 🩷
“Oh, Joey sent you a few gifts!” Lucille exclaimed.
“Joey…that homicide detective from Kanazawa?” Sakura questioned wondering why the name sounded familiar outside of being a fellow contestant in the Division Rap Battles.
“I mean he's one nowadays but I used to go against him a lot back when he used to gamble. One of the few to come close to beating me.”
Then it hit Sakura where she remembered Joey from. A vision of a blond young teen hit her. She had saved him after he had beaten this group of men one too many times. They were not at all happy to lose to some snot-nosed brat. Sakura wasn't going to lie the only reason she stopped them was that she was pissed that they wanted to start shit on her territory and not out of the goodness of her own heart. Still, she was surprised he had given her a gift considering he was law enforcement and she was a yakuza boss. However, it seemed like once again her name was being used against her with all these cherry blossom-themed gifts. Picking one of the mochi up Sakura took a bite.
“Lucille, do me a favor?”
“Yeah, Boss?”
“If you ever see Joey again beat his ass in a game of poker for me.”
