Day 1: Sunburst Diving Beetle

Found in central Pennsylvania.

If there's one thing I know about college girls it's that they love a large beetle on the sidewalk. This fella looks like a predaceous diving beetle, probably either a vertical diving beetle or a fringed diving beetle, but I'd need clearer photos to say which.

Thermonectus marmoratus (Dytiscidae) is a diving beetle that has various adaptations to live underwater, like having a bubble under their wings that carries underwater like a little water tank. They are predators and scavengers of underwater invertebrates such as mosquito larvae.

Last October, I took part in this awesome art challenge called Invertober, organized by the wonderful @fossilforager! As someone who adores bugs and invertebrates of all kinds, I found it to be a perfect way to have fun creating some art. There’s just nothing cooler than a little critter in my eyes. The challenge helped me get comfortable with Procreate again and reminded me how much I love playing with color. It was a blast, and I’m definitely planning to join in again this year!

While I only managed to complete 9 out of the 31 prompts, I think that’s pretty impressive, especially since I hadn’t done much completed personal art in the past few years. Here are the first three of the prompts I did. I'm excited to share the rest with you in batches over the next couple of weeks!

KISHIZU the water knight i wanted to make my own kaiju beetle because theres so few beetle kaiju and beetles are awesome so heres my beetle her name is Kishizu she is based on a predaceous diving beetle shes a protector of an ancient resevoir with mystical properties, she resides resting at the bottom of the lake, tough can sense any approaching danger. Abilities: shes a very fast swimmer using her powerful backlegs to propel herself through the water. her golden carapace absorbs any energy around it even that of energy based attacks used against her, she usually feeds on solar energy or energy from other kaiju. This stored energy can be used to create powerful and deadly vortexes that she can form using her wings both in air and water. She can also form a concentrated orb of this energy from her mouth, that can be be used as a projectile these orbs of pure energy Drag in anything around them then erupt in a powerful blast. On both sides of her pronotum there are to harpoons packed with a painful paralytic venom. This venom is also present in her jaws allowing her to give a nasty bite. She has sharp blade like spines on her forearms used for stabbing foes and blocking incoming strikes.
