Anti paced back and forth in front of the sofa. Jackie, sitting there, watched him walk back and forth, moving his head but nothing else. “You look as nervous as the day you adopted Will.” He laughed. “I-it’s funny that you’re once again anxious to see him.”
“Of course I am.” Anti shook his head. “IRIS had me convinced for a bit that he didn’t even exist. A-and I... well, it’s not... We’re on the run! I want to see Will as much as you want to see Michelle, but do you think it’s safe? What would IRIS do if they found them?”
“I don’t know if IRIS cares about children,” Jackie said slowly. “I-I hope they don’t. But honestly, I think they’ll be less safe on their own. Besides IRIS and Distorter, there are all the normal things that are a threat to eleven- and nine-year-olds. Like kitchen appliances. That’s an exaggeration. I know they’re smart enough to not mess around with that. But you know what I mean.”
Anti nodded. He continued to pace across the living room. The group had found an apartment to rent in this new city. It was small for them, and more expensive than the hotel room they’d stayed in for the first two days, but they needed more space with how many people they had in the group. Even with Aoife insisting on returning to and staying in Mirygale, they still had eight people—and now ten, with Rama picking up Will and Michelle.
The apartment had two bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed and one with a bunk bed and a single twin-size bed. Jackie and Rama claimed the former, while Marvin, JJ, and Schneep shared the second. Anti and Jack were stuck on the sleeper sofa in the living room. Stacy was the wild card, not sure where she wanted to stay, but eventually decided on buying an air mattress and sleeping in the room with Jackie and Rama. Right now, all the others were crowded into the two bedrooms, wanting to give Jackie and Anti space to reunite with the kids.
Jackie fiddled with his hoodie strings. “Do you think we should get some new phones soon? I-I’m really nervous about Rama going off on their own... I know we have the flat’s landline, but... it’s different.”
“We only have so much cash,” Anti said. “I wouldn’t put it past IRIS to track card purchases or withdrawals, so I don’t think we should get more until we absolutely have to.”
“Yeah... and do you think we’re getting to the point of ‘absolutely have to’ yet?”
“No. We can put off the phone purchase. And when we eventually have to buy stuff, we should take out small totals a little at a time, adding up to the big withdrawal.”
Jackie tilted his head. “You, uh... Do you have practice with that? When you... were on your own?”
Anti paused. “I never got to the point of people wanting to track my cash. But... well, uh... When I was desperate, I used... cards. And I learned that... big purchases wouldn’t go through.”
“Oh, Anti,” Jackie breathed.
“I-I regret it now,” Anti said quietly. “Like I do most things from my past.” He looked at Jackie nervously.
Jackie sighed. “Well... that’s bad, but I guess people could get new cards. It’s not the worst thing, huh?” He smiled. “Don’t worry, Aodhán, I know it’s different now. I just... I hope none of us have to resort to that.”
“We won’t,” Anti said firmly. “I promise. If I promise anything, it’s that we’ll never be desperate enough for that.” He looked away. “I... promised myself that. For Will. W-when I adopted him.”
Jackie nodded. “I-I think I understand that now,” he said quietly.
“...and I’m glad you do,” Anti said, even softer.
They fell silent for a few minutes, until there was a knock at the door. Anti immediately hurried over to open it, hand instinctively going to his pocket—even though his pocket was empty, no knife inside to comfort him with its defense. He pulled the door open a crack, and saw Rama on the other side. And with them, two little faces. “Hi, Uncle Anti,” Michelle whispered. She glanced around conspiratorially, like she was pretending to be a spy. “Can we come into the secret place?”
“Of course you can,” Anti said, and opened the door wider so they could all come inside. Jackie stood up, Michelle rushed at him, and he hugged her tight. They started to talk, Rama joining in, but Anti’s focus wasn’t on them. He closed the door, and looked at Will. Had he always been this tall? He was just about the height of Anti’s shoulder. Anti stared at him, and cleared his throat. “I-I don’t think we’ve really, uh... H-hey—”
Suddenly, Will rushed forward and wrapped his arms around Anti, squeezing him tight. Anti gasped, unsure how to respond to this. Will wasn’t normally a hugger... he would, the same as any other kid, but... Anti didn’t expect it right now. But here he was, and he could feel some wetness getting on his shirt from where Will’s face was buried in it, and a similar wetness was coming to his own eyes. “I... I missed you,” Will breathed.
“...I missed you too, bud,” Anti said, wrapping his arms around Will and hugging him tight in turn.
The two of them stood there for a while, just holding each other. Until, finally, Will wriggled out of his grip. “Um... so.” He fidgeted awkwardly. “R-Rama didn’t explain much. Just that we were like... on the run. A-are the police going to get us? Or... the gray man?”
Anti winced. “Maybe the second one. But we’re actually more worried about... D-did they tell you about IRIS? About... where I disappeared to?” He hesitated to share this. But he wanted to be honest with Will. If the height was any indication, he’d grown up quite a lot. He wouldn’t share everything. There were some details a child didn’t need to know. It probably wouldn’t help Will to hear about some of the ‘tests.’ But he deserved to know the big picture.
The two of them sat down on the sofa and talked. Jackie and Rama got up, showing Michelle around the apartment, small as it was. After that brief tour, they went into the bedroom with the queen-sized bed and started blowing up a second, smaller air mattress for Michelle to use when she wanted.
“Do you get all this?” Anti asked, finishing off his explanation.
“It’s like a science fiction show,” Will said. “So... this IRIS company wants to get the gray man. Distorter?”
“Well... I think so, at least?” Anti said. “But it’s more complicated than that.”
“They want to test what he does and that means testing you guys, too. I get that part.” Will nodded. “And JJ has magic, which they’re curious about too.” He paused. “Do you... do you think that means they’ll come for me and Michelle, too?”
“I don’t think they care about kids,” Anti said, repeating what Jackie said earlier. “But there’s a chance that something will happen while you’re on your own. You know?”
“Like... Distorter,” Will said quietly. He pulled his feet onto the sofa and folded his legs.
“Yeah.” Anti nodded. “Has he... been bothering you at all? Have you had any bad dreams?”
Will narrowed his eyes. “What’s the password?”
Anti smiled slightly and leaned over. “Minecraft,” he whispered.
Will nodded. “No... I-I don’t think so. But I do think that... I’ve been remembering stuff while I’m asleep. Stuff about when Michelle and I were in his house.”
Anti sat up straight. “Oh? Do you... want to talk about it?”
“I-I don’t... think so...” Will trailed off. “Um... things were weird in there. The rooms kept changing. Michelle was freaked out. I-I tried to keep her... keep her safe.”
“I see.” Anti nodded. “That’s... very brave of you. I-I’m proud you did that. Now... i-it’s time for the rest of us to keep you and her safe.”
Will smiled slightly. “Th-thanks, Dad.” He looked around. “So, uh... a-am I sleeping with you on the sofa? Like when I was little with nightmares?”
“Probably,” Anti said. “But Jack’s also been sleeping on the sofa. We don’t have much room, so it might be the three of us sharing it. But if you’re not comfortable with that, we could buy another air mattress today for either you or Jack.”
“Um...” Will thought about it. “I-I’ll try it for tonight. But only if I get to be on the edge and you’re in the middle.”
Anti smiled. “Hey, I don’t blame you for not wanting to sleep next to Jack. He’s a kicker.”
“What did you say about me?” Jack walked down the hall and poked his head into the living room.
“I said you kick in your sleep, dumbass,” Anti said.
“Hey, well, you toss and turn and hog the blankets.” Jack looked at Will. “Hey, Will.” Sam hopped out of Jack’s hoodie pocket and flew over to Will. “Ha. Sam’s happy to see you, too.”
“Wicked.” Will grinned. “Where’s Sam sleep?”
“Well, they don’t really sleep at all, but I make a little nest for them out of my hoodie and they rest in there when they want,” Jack explained.
“Aww.” Will’s grin softened into a smile, and Sam landed on his shoulder.
Anti felt his eyes start to water again, but he took a deep breath and pushed that back. “Are you hungry? We have some groceries. Not much, but we could make mac and cheese.”
“Ooo yeah!” Will’s eyes lit up.
“Ha. I’ll get started on that, then.”
———————
Marvin sat cross-legged on his bed, staring at the cards before him. The joker cards were face-up. He’d made sure to carefully scratch away the fake X over the runes over the past couple days, and now the angled spirals were in full view.
Schneep rolled over on his own bed nearby, peering down at Marvin; he’d taken the top bunk on the bunk bed, while Marvin had the single twin bed. Jameson was left with the bottom bunk. He’d tried to sleep on the top bunk the first night they were here, but he’d had a terrible nightmare, tossing and turning, and the other two insisted that he take one of the beds on the ground for the rest of the stay here. Marvin couldn’t climb up the ladder to the top bunk, so Schneep was left to sleep there for as long as they stayed in this apartment, and Jameson decided to claim the bottom bunk, as he feared Marvin might also have trouble with the lower bed. “Marvin?”
“Oh? Did I wake you up?” Marvin asked, looking up at him. “Sorry ‘bout turnin’ on the light. I wanted t’look at the cards, an’ the light from the window jus’ wouldn’ cut it.” They had the curtains drawn all the time, afraid that someone would be able to look in and somehow let IRIS know where they were.
“No, I was waking up anyway,” Schneep muttered. “Mein Gott... my sleep schedule is fucked.”
Marvin laughed. “I think all of ours are.” He looked down at the cards again. “Did you talk to Michelle and Will at all when they showed up yesterday? Or were you sleepin’ the whole time?”
“I think... I was sleeping the whole time,” Schneep said slowly.
“T’at probably isn’ a good sign,” Marvin said. “You’ve been sleepin’ so much lately.”
“My body needs to recover, I suppose.” Schneep sat up. “Perhaps I need to get out of the house. But...” He trailed off.
“Afraid?” Marvin asked. “Me too. Stacy and Jack are real lifesavers, bein’ brave enough to go out.” He paused. “Maybe... maybe I coul’ be brave enough to try, too. If I... can figure something out wit’ t’ese cards.”
“Hm.” Schneep leaned on the guard rail around the edge of the top bunk. “I would go with you, if there was some magic to protect us. What are you thinking?”
“The problem wit’ the cards is t’at it’s easy to mess them up,” Marvin said. “Knock one out of place, and the spell will end. So I was t’inkin’ if I taped them down to a board of some sort... we have packing tape an’ a cutting board t’at coul’ work.”
“You checked?” Schneep asked, the corner of his mouth twitching.
“Yes. But it’ll be awkward walkin’ around wit’ a cutting board. So I want t’be sure the combination works.” Marvin hesitated, then pushed aside the jokers. He wouldn’t need those for this, he was pretty sure. Maybe if he used the eye-like runes on the red fours? Somehow?
Schneep climbed down from the top bunk. “Should I ask the others if they want to go out for fresh air?”
Marvin nodded. “Go on. T’ough I don’ t’ink I can handle too many people at once.”
“I’ll talk around.” With that, Schneep headed out into the hallway.
Marvin frowned, biting his lip. The name of the game is hiding... Maybe these ones on the black eights, then? The rune on them means ‘darkness’ or ‘secret.’ Maybe if he used them to cover the eye runes... and then used the ace of clubs or ace of spades...
In the living room, Stacy was busy making a sandwich for lunch, while Anti, Jack, and Will played a card game on the counter. Anti was pretending to sneak a peek at Will’s cards, which made Will grin as he made sure to hide it. “Hello, you all,” Schneep said. “Marvin is thinking about doing some magic to protect us while we are out. If he succeeds, would any of you want to come with the two of us?”
“Huh?” Anti looked over. “Like, where would you be going?”
“...we did not talk about that,” Schneep said slowly. “We only vaguely mentioned going out... Well, it is circumstantial based on if he can figure something out, anyway.”
“Uh... well...” Anti looked at Will. “It has been a while since I went on a walk or something. But...”
“Y-you can go out if you want, Dad,” Will said.
“Are you sure?”
“Mm-hm. I can hang out with Uncle Jack and Stacy.”
Anti still looked uncertain.
“How about I go ask the others first?” Schneep offered. “They are all in the bedroom.”
“What, you don’t think me or Jack will want to go out?” Stacy asked jokingly.
“...Do you?”
“Nah, I go out often enough.” Stacy shook her head. “But it’d be nice to be asked, you know?”
“Yeah, I feel the same,” Jack said. “I’m good with staying. If Anti goes on whatever walk you guys are going on, I’ll stay here to watch the kids.”
“Got it.” Schneep nodded, and went back down the hall towards the second bedroom.
Inside, JJ was entertaining Michelle with some magic tricks. The two of them were sitting across from each other on the floor. JJ was causing small flurries of crystalline magic to appear on the floor between them, growing like a flower and then shrinking, only to grow again in another formation. Michelle was laughing, asking him to do one that looked like a star. Meanwhile, Rama and Jackie were sitting on the bed together, snuggling. Jackie lifted his head. “Yeah, Volt?”
“Marvin thinks he may be able to come up with some sort of protective spell so that we can walk about at our leisure,” Schneep said. “If he came up with something, would you all want to come on a walk or some such?”
Rama shook their head. “No, I drove a while all yesterday, I’m tuckered out. Jackieboy?”
“Maybe...” Jackie said slowly. “Maybe, uh, Michelle can come?”
“Huh what?” Michelle looked up. “Where are we going?”
“Probably just around outside,” Schneep said.
“Oh, there is a park nearby you can visit, maybe?” Rama said. “A small one, but it does have swings for the kids. Maybe you can take Michelle and Will with you, Jackie. If Anti wants to go with and bring Will, I mean.”
“I think he wants to get out of the apartment, but is worried about Will,” Schneep said. “Bringing him along might be a good solution.” He looked at JJ. “Jamie? What about you?”
Jameson shook his head. I don’t think... I’m ready for that. As he signed, his hands shook slightly. But if you and Marvin are, I’m proud of you guys. He smiled a little.
Schneep smiled back. “I am too.”
“Aw, t’ank you, Jems.”
“Gah!” Schneep jumped into the air—literally, grabbing onto the side of the doorway and bracing his feet against it to keep him suspended two feet off the ground.
“Oh, very impressive!” Marvin was suddenly behind Schneep, holding a handful of cards.
“What the—Marvin?!” Schneep gasped, and dropped down to the ground. “What are you—h-how did I not hear you?!”
“I t’ink I found a combination t’at works.” Marvin held up the cards. “But it’s six cards. T’at’s quite a powerful spell, an’ it seems the tiniest movement will upset it. But hopefully once we tape them down, it’ll all work out.”
“Are you going to cover the cards in something?” Jackie asked. “Because it seems like a bad idea to just apply packing tape directly to their surfaces.”
“...I woul’ve t’ought of t’at eventually, I’m sure,” Marvin said slowly. “In any case, anyone who wants to try t’is out wit’ me shoul’ gather together, I need to see if t’is’ll effect multiple people at once.”
The people interested in going outside gathered in the living room, where Jack and Stacy watched and reported on if the cards were working to truly make them disappear. They found that the cards provided a circle of invisibility—an “AOE effect,” as Anti called it—and if you got too far from the cards you would no longer be invisible. They also found that using half the cards would still provide invisibility, but in a smaller radius—and sound would still be heard, whereas sound in the six-card’s circle would not be heard by people outside.
Having determined all this, they went about trying to find a way to keep the cards secure in one position. They settled on putting the cards on a cutting board, wrapping it and the cards in saran wrap, and then covering that in packing tape. Luckily, all these supplies were on hand in the apartment, thanks to Stacy and Rama going shopping. “I think the tape was one of your guys’ suggestions, though,” Stacy said once all was said and done.
And with that settled, it was time to actually test it by going outside. Anti and Jackie were coming, along with their kids. Obviously Marvin was too, and Schneep—though he was a bit paranoid about it. And with it starting to get late, he insisted that they postpone this until tomorrow. The others agreed. Marvin was starting to feel fatigued, anyway. And going tomorrow would allow them all time to mentally prepare. Going outside while IRIS was looking for them was nerve-wracking to Jackie and Marvin—and Anti too, though he tried not to show it, for Will’s sake. But all of them were determined to try. Not just for fun. But because if they were going to eventually drive IRIS away, they’d need to sneak around them or confront them or something.
The group had dinner, then all went to their separate sleeping areas for the night. The cutting board with the cards was left at the end of the hall near the bathroom. Meaning anyone who wanted to go to the bathroom would be temporarily invisible as they passed into its circle of effect, but there wasn’t really anywhere more convenient to put it. So it was left there until the morning.
———————
A morning which dawned bright, but quiet. It seemed not many people were taking advantage of the sunshiny day. Then again, this apartment wasn’t in the best part of this city. It was clear that the neighborhood wasn’t maintained that much, judging by the chipped paint and faded signs and general grime of everything. But it was better than being in IRIS.
The six of them—Marvin, Schneep, Jackie, Anti, and the two kids—set off around midday. Schneep had the cards and cutting board shoved into a backpack on his back, so the others tried to stick close to him. Luckily, today was a good day for Marvin, so he was able to keep up... though he grumbled about how IRIS still had his cane and the wooden one they picked up from a petrol station felt less good in his hand. Jackie patted his shoulder and assured him that the park Rama had spotted wasn’t too far.
The park wasn’t as good as the ones they were used to back in Mirygale, but after so long being stuck in IRIS’s clinical rooms, and then being cramped into a small apartment, any amount of greenery was amazing. The small square of grass was walled in by a waist-high brick fence, and had a couple trees growing in lines down the middle and sides. There was an iron swing set and sandbox for the kids, along with several benches. And though the swing set had rusted chains and the benches had rotted wood, Michelle and Will were excited anyway. “Dad! Dad Dad Dad, can you push me when I swing?!” Michelle asked, tugging on Jackie’s hand.
Jackie smiled. “Of course, pumpkin.” He looked at the others. “Uh... sounds like you guys will have to hang out close by.”
“I can... go on the swings too,” Will said. “And Dad can... push me.” Clearly, he didn’t want to admit how eager he was to swing.
“Yeah, I’ll do that, bud,” Anti chuckled. “No problem. Just know you won’t get too high. You’re getting pretty big.”
“That sounds like quitter’s talk.”
“Ha! It sure does.”
Schneep glanced at Marvin. “I suppose that means we will take turns sitting on the last swing in the set?”
“No, I’m takin’ it th’ whole time,” Marvin said, hurrying to catch up with the others. Schneep burst into laughter.
The kids took their places on the swings, and Anti and Jackie pushed them. Michelle yelled and whooped in delight every time she reached the height of the swing arc. Will was a bit more subdued but he still couldn’t keep a big grin off his face. Marvin sat in the last empty swing while Schneep leaned against the pole supporting the swing set and watched the kids go. The ground was plain dirt under the swings, and their feet occasionally kicked up dust, but that was all part of the fun.
It was nice.
So why did Schneep have a creeping feeling that there was danger around the corner?
He shook his head. No, he was just being paranoid. There were no problems. They had nothing to worry about.
After a while, Jackie took a step back. “Alright, pumpkin, my arms are getting tired. I’m going to take a break for a bit. You can push yourself, right?”
“Yeah, Dad!” Michelle said cheerfully. She kicked her legs back and forth, keeping up the momentum. “I’m gonna go to the mooooon!”
Jackie laughed fondly. “Anti? Wanna sit down for a break too?”
“Nah, I’m not a pu—coward,” Anti said, and Will giggled.
“Jackie, you have to be careful not to leave the range of the spell,” Schneep said. “The benches are too far away for you to sit on.”
“Oh... yeah, you’re right.” Jackie paused.
This rule about staying so close to the spell seemed stupid, didn’t it? It wouldn’t hurt if he was visible for a few minutes.
Jackie shook his head. Even if the rule was a little too strict, he wouldn’t want to upset his friends by breaking it. “I’ll just sit down over here,” he said, walking a few feet away from the swing set and sitting down on the grass. “I’m still in range here, right?”
Marvin glanced back at him. “I t’ink so. You sure you want to sit behind the swings?”
“Well I’m not sitting in front where shoes can go flying off,” Jackie said. “I learned that lesson when Michelle was little.”
“Mm. Good point.” Marvin shrugs and turns back around. But Schneep looked uneasy. He didn’t say anything, but Jackie could tell.
It’s fine, though. Nothing was going to happen. This was the better place to sit anyway.
Jackie watched Michelle swinging from behind. Her long hair was pulled back in a ponytail that swayed in the wind, and she continued to laugh and shout. It was so good to see her again. What was he thinking, staying with IRIS? Did he really think it would be better if she didn’t see him? Or... did IRIS just convince him it would be? Was he just that scared? Looking back on it, being trapped with Distorter had really messed him up. Once IRIS was taken care of, maybe he should ask JJ or JJ’s magician friends if the magic community had therapists as part of it. Because though he’d tried normal therapy, it was difficult to really explain everything when he was trying to hold back on the supernatural elements...
Do you remember the house well, Jackie?
Of course he did. There was no way he’d ever forget it. The oppressive air in there, the way he felt dazed and confused all the time, and though it was a small house, he never really seemed to know where he was within it. And all the things Distorter had done...
Keep thinking about that.
He didn’t want to. But he couldn’t stop. His thoughts were dredging up old memories and images against his will, and he was falling downwards into a deep expanse of them, feeling almost physical pain as they invaded his mind. The freezing, the burning, the drowning, the blades, the chemicals—No! Stop! Stop this!
I can make it stop. Just... smile for me.
A gray fog started to seep into his mind. Jackie started, scrambling to his feet, a warning shout forming in his voice—
Or I can make it worse.
And instantly, he wasn’t outside anymore. He was in a kitchen in a plain, ordinary house, lying on the cold tile floor, his vision growing fuzzy as he stared at all the bottles of household cleaning chemical lying on the floor next to him, the taste of them still choking his throat.
Your choice.
The fog returned, and instinctively, instantly, Jackie ran into it.
“Jackie?” Schneep turned to look at him. He’d stood up. “What is it? Did you want to... leave or something?”
But Jackie didn’t answer. He only stared, his eyes glazing over... and dripping blood.
“Shit!” Schneep cursed. He rushed over to stand in front of Michelle. “Marvin! Anti! He’s here and he’s got Jackie!”
Anti’s head snapped over, and he immediately rushed into action, grabbing Will and pulling him off the swing. “Schneep you protect the kids!” he hissed.
“I’m not going to hurt the children.” That was Jackie’s voice saying that, but... the words clearly weren’t his. “I like the kids. We had fun together. And I’m a better father than you were, anyway, Aodhán.”
“Don’t you dare make Jackie say that!” Anti snapped. Michelle had also scrambled off the swing, and now she and Will were staying behind him, staring with wide eyes.
Marvin got off the swing and reached into his jacket pocket. “Volt, where is he?!” He asked, pulling out his cards.
“I—” Schneep’s head darted around wildly. “I-I do not see him!”
“Of course you don’t.” The corners of Jackie’s mouth were pulled upwards, forming a smile that was not his. “You think I have to be nearby to affect you all? I’ve been in all of your heads for so long now, I know the way in no matter how far apart we are.”
“You’re lying!” Anti shouted. “We know there’s a limit to your range!”
“But it’s one that can be widened with time.” Jackie’s body took a staggering step forward. Schneep and Anti spread their arms out, trying to block his way to the kids in unison, while Marvin scrambled through his cards, fanning them out and staring at the runes. “And like I’ve said, I’ve been with all of you for so, so long now. I don’t have to see or hear you to know where you are. So good job on the little spell of yours. It will work on IRIS, but not on me.”
Marvin’s face went pale. “You—I-I won’ let you—”
“Yes you will.”
And suddenly, Marvin was not out in the park. He was back in the house on Aspen Street, back in the basement... back in that box. Held up by strings, listening to applause as his body shook with pain, his leg in agony.
Anti yelled out in shock as he saw Marvin collapse to the ground, cards spilling everywhere as blood started to pour from his eyes.
“You too.”
And then Anti was not in the park, either. He was young, stuck in his childhood home, freezing up in his attic room while the sound of loud shows on the TV blared through the floorboards. He was young, but getting older, the room shifting to a bar that reeked of a sharp scent—
He stumbled, breathing heavily. No! No, he wouldn’t fall. He wasn’t there anymore. He was here, in the park, with his friends and his son.
Schneep had gone to help Marvin up, but he spared a glance to Anti, watching as blood trickled from one of his eyes as he fought to stay standing. “Dad?” Will said, clinging to his side. “C-come on, Dad! Don’t—d-don’t—” The boy couldn’t finish his sentence, trailing off in fear. Michelle was frozen in place, staring at Jackie.
“You... bastard,” Schneep growled, looking around for any sign of Distorter. “In front of the children?!”
“It’s upsetting for me too,” Distorter whispered through Jackie’s voice. “To know that they’re upset. But don’t worry. I can make sure they’re happy afterwards. They’ll forget all their struggles and they’ll just be happy.”
“That isn’t fucking healthy for them, you—Show your face, coward!”
Jackie’s forced grin grew wider. “No, I don’t think I will. It’s not cowardice to try and avoid a fight, you know. It’s just common sense. Besides... it’s not fair that you’ll be the only one fighting. It’s not fair that IRIS fucked your head to make you into their special weapon.”
Schneep winced. He looked down at Marvin, limp in his arms, and tried to shake him awake.
“How does it feel, not being able to know what’s inside of your body? How does it feel, knowing that when IRIS finds you again, they’ll do all they can to beat your personality and will out of you?”
“Shut up!” Schneep shouted, his voice cracking as tears came to his eyes. “Get out of my friend’s head!”
“Why? He wanted me here. So I listened, like any good friend would.”
“He would not want you to control his every action!”
“Ohhh, but Volt.” The nickname sounded wrong as Jackie said it, used in a different inflection than Jackie would usually use it. “That’s so much easier than not doing it yourself. And I’m so much nicer about it than IRIS is. So you should really let me try it out on you—oh no wait, that’s not even an option anymore.” Jackie—Distorter giggled. And then suddenly lunged forward.
Michelle shrieked. Schneep managed to scramble backwards, pulling Marvin with him, and Will pulled Anti back as well, causing him to gasp in shock. Distorter laughed again, and lurched at Schneep and Marvin, practically falling onto them. Schneep’s reactions kicked in. He pushed him away, grabbed him, and shoved him to the ground, pinning him down. And there he froze, conflict in his eyes.
Distorter grinned, the expression unnatural on Jackie’s face. “Are you going to shock your friend?” he whispered. “This is fully him, you know. It’s not like there’s a ghost in his body. It’s him. Are you going to attack him anyway, like a good little weapon?”
Schneep flinched, drawing back a bit—but then Jackie’s hand shot out and grabbed Schneep’s wrist, pulling him back. Distorter made Jackie press Schneep’s hand to his own chest, continuing to grin the whole while.
“Fucking do it, then. It’s what you’ve been made for, after all.”
For a moment, everything was frozen. Schneep was in shock, finding himself unable to move.
“Y-you...”
Schneep looked towards the sound of the voice. And so did Jackie, Distorter turning his head curiously.
“Y-you...” Anti said again, struggling. “You... fuck... right off.” He shook his head. “You... do not control me. You... cannot control Schneep. You... fuck off. Jackie. Jackie!” He shouted. “Tell him to fuck off!”
Distorter laughed through Jackie’s voice. “Are you serious? Oh, what are you trying to do, Aodhán?”
“Don’t you fucking call me that,” Anti hissed. “He’s not me anymore. And you are not me anymore, either. Do you understand that?”
Distorter blinked. “I was never ‘you,’ what the hell are you talking about?”
“Oh no, but you wanted me to be. You wanted me to be whatever you are—whatever you had been before. The man who did something unspeakable and then ended it for himself. That’s what you wanted me to be. You want me to hurt my friends, and then myself. You told me as much.” Anti’s unbleeding eye flashed with rage. “Well guess the fuck what, bitch? I’m not going to let you. Because you do not control me. I’m done letting you control me. I know I’m more than that now.” He staggered forward towards Schneep and Jackie, collapsing to his knees next to them. “And if I can fight you off, then Jackie definitely can. Because he’s so much stronger than I am. You hear that, Jackie?! If I can do it, you can do it too! A-and if you can’t do it right now, that’s o-okay! Because m-me and Schneep are here to help you!”
The glazed look in Jackie’s eyes flickered. “A-An...ti?”
Anti looked past the two of them. “You too, Marvin! You’ve been through so much with this fucker, you can pull through this, too! W-we’re here o-on the other side, w-waiting to help you.”
Marvin blinked slowly. The blood trickle coming from his eyes seemed to pause for a second.
Jackie made a choked sound. His back arched, eyes rolling back. Schneep scrambled away to give him space. “Y-you think that this... this...” Distorter hissed. “This power of love bullshit will overcome me?”
“No... I know it will,” Anti growled. “Because I know what you really are, Distorter. Not who you are—or should I say, who you used to be. I know what you are. I know what overcame him. I know because I’m very familiar with it myself. And that’s why I know you can’t stand up against this.”
Michelle took a few steps forward. “D-Dad...?” She whispered. “I... um...” She hesitated, unsure what to say. “I... love you.”
Jackie’s eyes welled with tears. Tears that spilled over the edge, washing away the blood. He suddenly gasped as the glazed look in his eyes disappeared. “M-Michelle? G-guys?”
Michelle ran forward, toppling over on top of Jackie and hugging him tight. Jackie let out an “oof!” as his breath was knocked out of him, then sat up, hugging Michelle to his chest.
And a second later, Anti saw the images taking up half his vision—images of his past—fade away, along with the pressure and fog trying to fill his mind. Marvin suddenly sat upright, gasping for breath. Schneep looked back and forth between them all. “Is... i-is it over?” he asked hesitantly.
Jackie wiped the blood from his face. “I... don’t really know what just happened, but... I guess?”
Marvin groaned. “Fuckin’ hell... why now? Bastard.”
“He wanted to remind us he was still watching,” Anti muttered. “If he wanted to put up more of a fight... he could have. But this was just him testing the waters.” He looked around uneasily.
Schneep cleared his throat. “Should we... reconsider taking care of IRIS first?”
“I think we need to ask Jackson and the others about that,” Anti said. “And for that... we need to get back to the apartment.”
“I woul’ be ready for t’at,” Marvin said, gathering up his cards. “But... we can’ jus’ stay in the apartment all the time. Even if... Distorter is out here.”
Jackie looked at Michelle. “You ready to go back yet, pumpkin?”
“I, uh...” Michelle bit her lip, considering that. “I-I liked swinging. And I like being out here. And he’s gone now, right? So... maybe we can just... be out here for a bit longer?”
“Y-yeah.” Will nodded shakily, holding onto Anti’s hand. “Let’s just... hang out for a bit.”
Anti chuckled. “Well, who are we to deny kids what they want? When it’s something like this.”
“...I suppose that Distorter is not likely to be back,” Schneep said slowly. “But he still may be nearby. A-and that...” He trailed off.
“We can’t let him control us, Henrik,” Anti whispered.
Schneep took a deep breath, and nodded. “You are right. I suppose we can stay out for... a bit longer. But not too long.”
“We need t’see if t’ere’s a laundromat nearby,” Marvin said, putting his cards back in his pocket. “Look at us. Me an’ Jackie covered in dirt.”
Anti laughed. “We’ll look around on the way back, I guess. Might be hard to use one if we’re still invisible to others, but hey, for the future. Now... what are we doing while out here?”
“I have an idea!” Michelle raised her hand. “Let’s draw stuff on the ground. We can do tic-tac-toe or something!”
Jackie smiled. “That’s a great idea, Michelle. Or what about hangman?”
“Yeah!”
Anti sat down on the ground. “Games it is, then.”
And so, the next hour or so passed by playing small games, drawn in the dirt, and also by swinging and going on walks around the park, looking at the trees and picking up interesting rocks. Distorter had slowly faded from their minds... but the memory of the encounter lingered in the back of their thoughts.

I love this part :’) hope you enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the chaos that just happened, Bro Fantastic is met with sudden calm. It's late afternoon, and he's standing on a set of train tracks. On either side are station platforms with benches and lights that are just now turning on in preparation for evening. Everything is quiet.
Until--
"Hey!"
There's a man on one of the platforms. He has brown hair, dyed with streaks of green and black, and heterochromiac eyes: one blue, one green. One hand is reaching inside his black jacket's pocket, the other is held out, protectively shielding a redheaded boy--small for his age--who seems very curious about what just happened. "Get off the tracks!" the man says. "There's gonna be--wait a second, do I know you?"
Bro Fantastic shakes off the wave of vertigo from whatever that spell was and then dips down to his knees, clutching his burnt stomach. He blearily looks out at the man shouting at him- he looks like Jackie but… edgier- wait-!
Bro’s eyes widen and then he pushes himself off the tracks and bursts into the air then quickly lands in front of the man and boy. He laughs a bit dazedly, gripping his wound. “A-Anti!” He exclaims, blue silver power bright in his eyes. “Thank god this place has at least something familiar…”
Anti's eyes narrow in suspicion, then widen again. "Oh, fuck, yeah! You're--wait." He glances at the redheaded boy. "Uh, I mean--"
"Dad, I'm eleven, I hear you say that all the time," the boy says.
Anti laughs. "Alright, fine." He turns back to Bro. "You're from that--that other place. You're... Chase. Right. Sorry, I forgot your name." Then he notices the wound. He inhales sharply. "A-are you alright? Stupid question, you're not. Shit, we have to get to a hospital, uhhh..." He pulls out his phone.
Chase waves Anti off and tries not to let himself grimace, “no no I… I’m fine- I can heal fast just- hurts like a bitch till then…”
"I'm Will," says the boy.
Bro smiles down at the boy and waves, “Hi Will, you’re Anti’s son, huh? He def mentioned you pretty sure…”
"Yeah, this is Will," Anti repeats. "What're you doing here, anyway? How are you here?"
Chase’s eyes then widen as he straightens up and looks around frantically, “Oh shit right-! Uh I don’t know how it happened but- Magnificent… he took Alt- and made him use this weird doorway thingy! And then- god everything happened so fast… there was this huge burst of light then… I was here.” He shakes his head, “But god damn this… this isn’t good- Mag could still have Alt or- or he might go after some of you all again-!”
He looks at Anti desperately, squeezing his aching stomach. “Anti, can you help me find them?”
"Doorway thing...?" Anti is confused by that, but decides to move on. He's seen weirder. The point is that shit's going down. "Yeah, man, of course I'll help you find them. If that cat c--bitch is here, it could mean trouble..." He shivers just remembering things in that other world. "I gotta get Will home first, though. Or, maybe to Rama's house, it'll be safer that way. Yeah, I can call them to come here and pick him up."
"Daaaad," Will whines.
"No, don't be like that, bud, this is dangerous. Rama will keep you safe." Anti looks down at his phone again and starts tapping. "If you're sure that you can heal, we'll forget the hospital. I'm texting the others to let them know. Maybe they've seen Alt or Magnificent. In the meantime... I dunno. I need to stay here and wait for Rama to come get Will. You can stay too, or maybe I can give you the others' addresses and you can start looking around? Do you have your phone with you?"
Chase pats down his outfit in mid panic before relaxing, pulling out his phone. He’s not even in his super suit- but he does keep his utility belt tucked under his shirt sometimes. He’s wearing a tank top that looks like his super suit but with his emblem tinier in the upper corner- new merch he was trying out… heroes gotta eat too you know? And of course- his signature jacket, but one of his knock off ones that had a hood. He might not even need to whip out his mask- “yeah yeah I got it I….” He grips at his stomach and pushes past a wave of pain but it’s getting less and less. Only problem with super healing is it took energy from other parts of his body- meaning he might be grounded for a bit. God that sucked ass… but the others were always telling him he shouldn’t be pushing through injuries anyways. But his nerves were on fire thinking about Alt…
“I… fuck I guess I should try to recover for now… I might get myself lost otherwise. Hopefully one of the others might run into Alt…” He chewed on his lip in worry. “I hope he’s okay… and that whatever magic Mag used- hopefully he’ll be out of commission for a bit…” But- things like that don’t usually go their way.
"Okay good." Anti looks at him, concerned. "Yeah, sit down, man. There are benches everywhere. Alt's pretty tough, he'll be fine for a little while." Probably. Maybe.
Bro nods and stumbles to sink into a bench, holding his wound. He could feel it closing up and hardening but god that burned like a motherfucker. Sometimes he hated his ability- but it made it so he could save people faster and that’s what matters.
"Okay so I don't think cell reception works in other universes but WiFi is probably fine, so turn on the WiFi texting option so we can reach you just in case. I'll call my friend to come get Will." Anti glances down at his own phone. "Looks like Jackie and Schneep might be here soon, too. Good."
"I like your jacket," Will says to Bro.
Anti laughs. "Yeah, his jacket is cool."
Bro blinks and then smiles at Will, “Thanks lil dude! I… designed it myself- kinda- this is, a knockoff of the one I made. Superhero Fan merch you know-“ ah his delirium is showing off his adhd wonderful but hey, maybe this kid likes superheroes…
"Oh, cool. A real superhero?" Will's eyes are wide. "Like Uncle Schneep? Wicked. Michelle would go crazy!"
Bro grins wide and nods, “Yup! I’m Bro Fantastic~!” Shit did he even have his mask? He was too tired to check- would be cool to show the kid though. “Though you little dude, can just call me Chase if ya want- or bro~!”
Will looks over at Anti. "How do you know this guy?!"
Anti smiles gently. Eleven-year-olds are probably smart enough to understand multiverses, right? But are they emotionally ready to deal with that being real? Probably not. "It's a long story." Anti sits down on the other side of the bench Bro sits on. "Uh... we have some time. I'll explain..." Bro settles in to listen to Anti’s retelling, even if all he could feel was dull panic swirling in his gut.
-----------
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city, Alt pops into being in a suburb. It's fairly ordinary-looking. Houses are taken care of. Except... for one. One that has yellowing grass, grayed peeling paint, and shingles falling off the roof. But Alt doesn't see that right away. He appears with his back to it.
Alt’s body is hard to piece back together at first, pixels and shapes at first before finally snapping back together. He crashes to the ground and grips tightly at his arm, biting back a pained scream. Black magic pulses painfully in his veins and it burned, eating away at him. Purple still fought in his eyes but- he was away from Mag and his influence so it was starting to clear. He grit his teeth and ducked his head to the ground, letting out an angry scream. “that MOTHER F̵̟̂U̵̎̉C̷̡̈́Ḱ̸͊E̵͐̒R̷͂̇!”
Okay okay- he needed to try to figure out what the hell was happening… all he could piece together was Mag took him, and used him for something. Something dangerous… Chase was there but- didn’t manage to stop it. Alt finally peeks up his head to try to look around, feeling himself pale. This… this wasn’t Brighton- it didn’t feel right. God no- did Mag actually manage to- to multiverse hop?? And he used Alt to do it!
Alt glitches angrily and curses up a storm as he tries to get to his feet. Ugh he feels faint- but he has to try to get up. He has to stop Mag- he has to find Chase!
As Alt struggles to get up, the door to the house behind him slowly opens. Then he hears it. The voice, so hard to describe and yet so distinct in its indistinctness.
"Well look who's back!"
Alt’s blood runs cold and he stumbles back from the door, unable to stop his limbs from starting to tremble. His eyes widen and he tries to glitch back but the black magic flares and leaves his body only fizzing with glitches. “No- no no no- not you…!” He whispers, dread filling every inch of his body.
Distorter giggles. How did he get so close to Alt without him realizing?! He's only a few feet away. "How'd you get here, Anti?" he asks, grin widening. "All by yourself, too? None of those friends of yours with you? Aw, what a shame. But it's okay." He takes a few steps forward. "They'd only get in the way." His head tilts to the side. "Looks like you're having trouble there. Can't get those powers to work like they should? How useless."
Alt’s panicking, trying to back away as he feels gray fogging up his vision. No no no!
“I… I don’t know- Mag… Mag did something…! He… he…” Alt tries to get his magic to work- but anything he tries to summon has the dark magic reacting in kind, sapping his energy. Still, Alt tries to hold out a sparking hand, blue and green struggling to flare up in his eyes. “S-stay back-! G-get away from me!!!”
"Oh? But it sounds like you need help. I'm happy to be there." Distorter's grin widens further. He walks right up to Alt, undeterred by his threats and sparking, and reaches out with a blackened hand. Stay calm, Alt. Nothing bad is going to happen =)
Alt shudders and tries to pull away but his thoughts start to fizzle into nothing but fog. Especially as Distorter manages to grab him.
He… he does need help. He’s in pain- he’s scared. Distorter can… can help… right? He’s… he’s helped before… right? It was all so… fuzzy.
Calm washes over him so fast he nearly loses his balance. It’s like all his senses have been turned down to zero. His eyes widen and the magic around him fizzles into the air into nothing but spare electricity.
“…help…” He whimpers- whether it’s to Distorter or a cry for someone else… it’s hard to say.
"Shh. Don't worry." Distorter's smile widens again as he steadies Alt from falling, holding him up. His grip is tight, clenching his upper arms. "Do you think that Magnificent came with you? He probably did, right? We should go find him before he finds you." Maybe this time he'd get one up on that magician. He'd be a useful friend. Or at the very least, it would be good to stop him before he messed with the others.
Alt swayed in Distorter’s grip, head threatening to fall to his chest. It felt like something was trying to leak out of his eye but he could barely feel it. “Yeah… mag… mag’s here.., we… we gotta… gotta stop him…”
Distorter was powerful, he could help Alt stop magnificent. …they were friends after all…
Distorter briefly wonders if any more people from Alt's universe showed up. If they did, it would be good to have a... shield of some kind. "Come on. We'll go together. We'll help each other. You can protect me, and I'll make sure nothing bothers you."
“Mmmmkay… yeah…” Alt muttered dazedly, eyes glazing over. “We can… protect e’chther…” His mouth didn’t want to work.
His mind tried to wander, brief panic flickering in his gut. A smiling face was in his vision- a nicer smile then Distorter’s… with sun kissed cheeks that radiated warmth. But, Alt couldn’t grasp onto why he was important. It didn’t matter. Distorter would tell him what mattered.
"Exactly." Distorter lets go of Alt, letting him balance on his own two feet. Is he still swaying? Whatever happened to him before must've done a real number on him. It'll be fine, though. Nothing to worry about. Now... where to go? He thinks about it for a moment, then nods. "Magnificent will try to head to a certain place sooner or later. Let's see if we can beat him there." He disappears from Alt's vision, reappearing some way down the sidewalk. "This way."
Alt nods distantly and trembles slightly before pulling his body to walk after Distorter. He gripped at his arm, a dull ache trying to make itself known. Blood flowed slowly down his cheeks as he dazedly walked after Distorter. He had to find Magnificent… he had to. Nothing else mattered.
————
Magnificent himself has appeared in a different, unfamiliar location--just as he wanted. This looks like a neighborhood, made up of rows and rows of old-fashioned-looking townhouses. He stands near a street intersection No people or cars are in sight... but there's a weird green glow coming from around one corner.
Magnificent looks around his new surroundings, a burst of pride and erratic excitement overcoming him. He laughed madly, clawing back his hair as he took stock of himself. Kinda weak from the spell but nothing he can’t recover… he just needed another source of magic to steal. But, at least he had enough to disguise himself… he can’t draw too much attention to himself right away. In a buzz of static his eccentric clothes change into something light and casual- a dark green button up, a black blazer, black pants and purple dress shoes. His scar is disguised- his hair pulled up into a brunette bun on his head. He grinned and checked himself over. Alright- perfectly normal!
He closed his eyes to let out some energy, trying to see if he can sense any magic sources nearby. Once recovered… he could hunt down the greatest sources of magic he can find here…
He opens his eyes to notice the green light and tilted his head curiously, much like a cat would. He started to slink towards it, almost hungrily.
There is a man standing at a bus stop. He's wearing a red jacket, which calls Jackie to mind, but he's not him. His hair is dyed green like meadow grass and his eyes are framed by a pair of glasses. The green glow is coming from something... floating... near the man. Something... green. And... spherical. It's moving up and down somewhat frantically, making it hard to notice details.
"--can't figure out what you're saying if you go so fast!" The man is talking to the floating thing. "I get it, it's important, but--really? Yeah, I know, but I can't fucking drive, do you want me to just walk away? We can keep going to their house--Okay, okay! Look, calm down, anyone could see you." The man glances around--and notices Magnificent. He freezes like a deer caught in headlights. The green thing also freezes and ducks behind him, like it's hiding.
Magnificent smiles charmingly at the two as he approaches. “Well… don’t you keep the most peculiar company?” He muses silkily, walking up but stopping just a bit short of the pair.
“You seem distressed, young man. Might I ask what’s troubling you and your… pet?” His eyes locked into the glow from the spherical thing- he couldn’t understand the power that came from it but it had something. And that was enough…
"Uhhh..." Jack takes a single step backwards, immediately wary. This stranger... he looks like Marvin, but he obviously can't be him. Unless he figured out some new spell with those cards, but even if he did, Marvin would never call Sam a pet. "W-well, I... I'm actually on my way to visit some friends, but they... want to leave..."
Sam wants to leave because Sam was suddenly struck by the feeling that something terrible is going to happen. And as they hide behind him, they say that this might be it.
No kidding. But Jack's not sure how to proceed. He didn't expect to be ambushed by...whoever this is. Maybe this is one of Distorter's tricks that he heard so much about? "And, uh... I-I don't want to upset them, so I'll just... hurry and go..." Sam really doesn't want him to go to Marvin and JJ's house. They say the bad feeling just gets worse when they think about that.
Magnificent tilts his head like a predator looking down at its prey. Jack can see his image stutter slightly, one of his eyes glowing green, the other devoid of life, surrounded by ugly raised scars like cris cross over each other like lightning. But, the image quickly fades as the stranger smiles.
“I see- well. Don’t let me keep you! Sounds like this is an urgent matter… so sorry to disturb.”
It was taking everything in him not to pounce right now- but he needs to be patient. In control.
"Uh... yeah." Jack starts walking backwards... slowly... and then abruptly turns and hurries away, walking as fast as possible without actually running--who knows what would happen if he ran?! Sam perches on his shoulder as he fumbles with his pocket and starts pulling out the phone. He has to tell the others! This feels like some weird shit that'll involve them!
Ah perfect- these idiotic humans never thought about how bad it was to turn their back on a threat. Mag grins and then lashes out a hand to try to grab Sam in a flash of purple and green magic.
Sam's pupil widens as the magic grabs them and yanks them back. Jack immediately stops and spins around. "Sam!" he cries. "No no no, let them go!" Sam squirms, nerve-tail lashing, and Magnificent now has a clear view of them in all their eyeball-ness for the first time.
Magnificent’s eyes widen at the sight then he laughs, holding the eye up closer to his face with his magic. “Well aren’t you a curious little thing?” He purrs. He then cups his hands around the eyeball and starts to crush his magic around them. “I hope you’re not too attached to your human, little eye, because I need whatever magic or power is running through those nerves of yours!”
He’s not sure if he can- but he tries to see if he can siphon some magic from this strange glowing creature.
Sam squirms, tail lashing. Their glow dims slightly and Magnificent feels... something. It feels sour, in some way. And sharp. But it's only a small trickle, and their glow is still going pretty strong.
Magnificent squirms slightly at the feeling of the magic he siphoned. Unpleasant… but something…
"Hey! Asshole!" Jack looks around, desperately. He doesn't want to get too close but he can't just let Sam be hurt. In desperation--acting on instinct and not really thinking--he throws his phone at Magnificent. Immediately regretting it the moment it leaves his hand but oh well its too late now he's committed!
Before Mag could push for more he hears the shout and then lifts up a hand to catch the phone in a wave of magic.
Unnatural cat-like eyes meet Jack’s glowing in the night as the man grins. “ooooh? Is the human thinking himself brave? How adorable~!”
He flicks his hand and his magic darts back to make Jack’s phone hit in the stomach. Magnificent’s voice darkens to something dangerous, “I have no use for useless things like you- get out of my sight and I might spare you~” He chuckles, crushing a hand around Sam.
Jack staggers back and barely manages to grab his phone before it falls to the ground. What should he do? What can he do?! He looks at Sam. Their nerve-tail flails wildly, but they tell Jack to get out of here, that they don't think anything too bad will happen. But Jack can't just leave them!
Then he has an idea. He makes a show of fumbling with his phone as he puts it back in his jacket pocket, using the motion to hide him dialing the first number on his recent contacts. "I-I'm not useless," he says, further distracting this--this evil doppleganger. "I--I know about you. Or--or your kind. You're a magician, aren't you?! What are you going to do with Sam? They can't--they can't help people like you!"
Magnificent chuckles more and tosses Sam up and down in his magic, like someone throwing a ball. “I guess you could lump me up in that title- though I am something far greater~!” He purrs with pride. “As for your little creature- I don’t need much… just a bit of whatever power they have to claim for my own. Then- I can hunt for… bigger fish~” Mag’s eyes glow brighter as he grins. “You know of magicians- that means some are around… I guess you were more useful to me than I thought!”
He shakes his head and then looks down at Sam. “Though- you are rather unusual, little eye… maybe I should keep you to study closer, hm?”
Nope nope nope nope--Jack can feel Sam's distress at that statement. They say something about deja vu and other Sams that he doesn't quite understand, but it's not the time to ask about that. "No!" Jack blurts out. "No, you can't--you can't get anything from them!" That sounds desperate (which it is) but he's pretty sure it's true. "I can--i-if you're so curious I can tell you anything you want about them, just leave them alone!"
There's a faint voice on the other end of the phone conversation. He can barely hear it but it's recognizable. He wonders how fast they can get here. Even if they run it'll take a while--maybe there's some magic that can help.
Magnificent studies Jack with a critical eye. He could see a faint magic aura from this boy- but it’s faint. Not even flowing in his blood, just there. How disappointing.
Mag pulls his lip back in a snarl. “I have no time to waste on hardly magic mortals, boy. I doubt any information you know will even be of use to me.”
Mag squeezes at Sam trying to see if he can get another inkling of magic- he can’t teleport right now, and he isn’t stooping down to running away from something that’s not even a threat.
Jack's heart pounds in his chest. Sam is begging him to leave, to run, reassuring him they'll be alright. He doesn't believe them. But he'd be no help if he gets himself killed. He stands there, frozen, watching Magnificent squeeze his friend--
And then there's a puff of blue smoke behind Magnificent. Before it even disperses there are three wheels of blue light spinning out, heading straight for Magnificent.
The dark magician barely has a chance to suck anything from the eye before he’s struck by bolts of blue light. One hits his arm- then the others manage to throw him off his feet, He flies back, the magic holding back Sam crackling into static. He yells in anger, his disguise also melting away to show the masked villain in all his dramatic glory.
He turns to snarl at the source of magic that dared to strike him-!
Jameson stands there, hands raised, a shield crystalizing into place even as the smoke from the teleportation spell still lingers. His eyes widen. He thought he recognized the voice over the phone but he hoped he was wrong.
Sam flies to Jack as soon as they're able, smacking into his chest. He catches them and holds them close to his chest.
Go! Jameson signs.
Jack hesitates.
Go! He repeats, more insistently. Tell the others!
After another second, Jack nods, and turns and runs.
Jameson lets out a breath of relief. He just needs to distract Magnificent for long enough. He's sure that the dark magician would prefer him as a target instead of Jack.
And he's right- Magnificent's eyes light up hungrily as he pulls himself and sways slightly, looking off kilted as he grins wildly. "Well well well! Hello there, kitten~!" He laughs. "Oh I was hoping the universe would be kind to me... and they deliver you here to me on a sliver platter!"
The mad magician then lunges at Jameson with his hand outstretched- trying to grab him with his claws.
Luckily, Jameson's shield is solid. He spins it around to block Magnificent's attack. How are you here?! he asks, unsure if Mag would know what he's saying. Then he puts his hands together, cupping them like he's holding a ball. A sphere of blue light forms in his hands and he drops it on the ground, letting it splash. The magic spreads across the sidewalk, turning it blue and slick like ice.
Magnificent bangs across the shield and then jumps back, landing in a crouched position on the sidewalk. His eyes reflect the light like a cats as he giggles, pulling himself up to full height.
A voice slithers into Jameson's head, purring, "Now Jameson... so hostile~! Is this anyway to treat your master?" His eyes are swirling as he tries to advance. "It'd be so much easier if you didn't fight, little bird... I won't harm you, I only need to borrow something from you."
The magic spreads across the sidewalk and Magnificent stumbles then hurries to hold himself up, trying not to fall flat on his face. He growls. Being drained is a real inconvenience... but all he had to do was make Jameson fall back under his thrall.
Jameson flinches back, keeping the shield up. He smiles a bit as he sees Magnificent stumble--there's something vindicating about that--but it distracts him for just enough to make eye contact. The swirls are familiar... comforting... His shield is flickering... No--no! He shakes his head and tries to resist but... why would you resist something so beautiful? The shield dies quickly.
Magnificent grins even wider and strides forward more, humming. "Very very good, birdie~! Fall nice and deep for me... and this won't hurt a bit~"
He approaches and then grabs Jameson's arm, digging his nail into the skin, branches of black veins spreading across the surface. Then, he tries to siphon magic from the magician, greedy trying to pull as much as he can.
Jameson shivers. There's a dead feeling creeping into him from his arm, from the spot where Magnificent grabbed him. He looks down and sees the black veins spreading. Faint alarm bells go off in his head but he can't bring himself to do anything about it, even as weakness makes his arms and legs tremble. He falls to his knees, breathing heavily.
The air seems to shimmer...
Magnificent laughs as blue light floods into his veins, pulsing with energy then fading to blazing purple. He feels his magic and strength returning. He doesn't drain Jameson completely though, not yet- He may be of use to him... he needs to find another way to hop to the next multiverse before he finishes up here. Oh and find his cub... just in case. But, this will suffice for now~
He lets Jameson drop to the ice below and sighs dreamily, "Mmmm just what I needed! Thank you very much, Jameson~!" He then bends down to pick him up by his hair and hums in thought, "You should stick by me though, little lark~ I may have further use of you."
The mad magician is too distracted by his prize to notice anything shimmering in the air-
Jameson's eyes are glazed over. He doesn't react at all to anything Magnificent is saying or doing. The combined hypnotism and draining has left him weak. He looks up at Mag and mumbles in a raspy voice, "Yes... yes, Magnif—"
And then, for a split second, there's a flicker of orange and blue and yellow, a spiral much different than the ones Magnificent uses—
And Jameson is gone.
The stolen magic remains in Magnificent's veins, but the blue ice coating the sidewalk is also gone.
As if it—and Jameson—were never here in the first place.
Magnificent blinks in mild surprise at the new colors- then springs to his feet as Jameson disappears, wildly looking around for any lingering hints of magic. He then curses in Gaelic and throws a tinted punch into the bus stop sign, making it dent in on itself in a burst of purple and green sparks.
He then hums and tries to breathe, studying the lingering blue in his veins. ... he had enough, enough to at least look for his cub and find out more about what this dimension uses to explore other universes. In a wave of static, he dons his disguise again and then walks further into the night, looking for any other lingering of magic around.
The Immutable Past
Switch AU
A JSE Fanfic
Yknow sometimes I can't believe that this story is really this long. This is Chapter 61. That's not a real chapter number! XD But I still have more to do! I love these characters. Okay, side comment out of the way, onto the summary hfdjaskl JJ and Marvin go to have a meeting with some magicians about getting magical help with IRIS. There, they realize that Marvin's cards have a lot of potential power. What do they do with it? How do they use that power? Meanwhile, Anti has a weird dream. I really liked writing this chapter! Enjoy reading :D
———————
Marvin stared out the train window at the buildings passing by. They were starting to look familiar, though it felt like ages since he’d last seen them. The outer edge of Mirygale, the city where he’d lived all his life—though separated into two different time periods. He thought it would be a long while before he saw this skyline again.
Last chance to change your mind, JJ said. The station is coming up soon. You can just stay in your seat instead of disembarking.
“Wouldn’ t’at jus’ take me deeper into the city?” Marvin pointed out. “Isn’ t’at exactly what none of us want to happen?”
JJ blinked. Well... maybe you can get off at this station and then take the train back out of the city and back to where we’re staying.
Marvin chuckled a little. “I’m not one t’get cold feet. It’s why I thrived so much as an actor.” He reached into his pocket and quietly ran a finger along the edge of the deck of cards in there. “Besides. I really do t’ink it’ll help to have me t’ere.”
JJ nodded slowly. Alright, then.
“I appreciate your worry about me, Jems.” Marvin nudged JJ’s shoulder with his own. “Really. But I’m not goin’ t’be leavin’ you in the city where IRIS still has a foothold. Even if you’ll have some other magicians backin’ you up.”
And I appreciate that, as well. JJ gave him a weak smile. Then he looked up as he felt the motion of the train start to slow. Well, this is our stop, then.
The two of them had taken the early morning train all the way from Bellanathy, the city where the whole group was hiding after the IRIS escape, back to Mirygale. Because a few days ago, a magical message had appeared in the middle of the apartment right in front of JJ. It had about given everyone a heart attack to see a glowing yellow orb suddenly appear and start speaking in Aoife’s voice. None of them knew such a spell was possible!
Aoife’s message quickly explained everything that happened. She’d gone back to Mirygale and contacted the Magic Circle for help with the whole IRIS situation, telling them about how she’d helped the group escape. The Magic Circle had started separately looking for ways to help, but they hadn’t found anything concrete yet, and they wanted to talk with JJ about possible solutions. The final part of the message had been her giving brief instructions to JJ on how to send a magical reply.
Of course, everyone jumped at the chance for magical assistance. Schneep’s chance meeting with that detective, Rachel, meant that IRIS might have a legal case to worry about, but their own plan of breaking into IRIS to get proof of their misdeeds wasn’t going too well. Jackie’s inside knowledge could only get them so far. They just weren’t sure how to go about sneaking around inside without getting caught. The disguise plan had backfired during the escape, and the only reason they got out at all was because of that strange “power-up” JJ suddenly unlocked. Schneep and Anti were willing to go charging in and try to fight their way out, but everyone else wasn’t so eager.
They’d had to wait a few days to arrange the meeting with the Magic Circle, though. Because once Marvin heard about it, he wanted to go as well. But he was still pretty sick with whatever flu or virus he’d caught, so they had to wait for them to recover. JJ sent a return message explaining that, and he and Aoife managed to come up with a plan to meet up when Marvin was better. Well, he was better now. So it was time.
The two of them got off the train along with a whole crowd of people and quickly separated from the others, looking around for familiar faces. JJ held onto Marvin’s hand tightly, not wanting to lose him—and also, a little nervous for his own safety. What if IRIS had cameras in the train station? What if they saw the two of them here?! No, no, they didn’t know that for sure... it would be... fine. It would be.
“Jameson!”
A voice called over the chatter of the crowd. JJ and Marvin looked around, and soon spotted who they’d come here to meet. Aoife’s red hair and yellow hoodie were pretty distinct, after all, even if she wasn’t the tallest person around. She was standing with three other people. Jameson waved at the group, then hurried over. “Jems, slow down!” Marvin said as he was yanked along. JJ slowed considerably and signed a sorry back at him.
“Hey there.” Aoife nodded at the two of them as they approached, giving a slight grin. “You two look alright. No problems since I last left you? Everyone else okay?”
Yes, we’re all fine, JJ confirmed. Did I tell you that some of us came into the city to pick up the kids?
“Oh! No, you didn’t. But I guess that makes sense, we don’t want two kids to be left unsupervised so far away.” Aoife nodded. “Anyway. This is Persephone, she’s the head of the Magic Circle, and these are Neil and Dylan, they’re members.”
“Ah yes, Neil and Dylan, the most magical names,” Marvin muttered.
The two guys chuckled, and so did Persephone. “Hey, people are named what people are named,” she said. “Marvin, right? I don’t believe we’ve met. Nice to meet you.” She held out her hand.
“The pleasure’s all mine,” Marvin said, shaking her hand firmly. “Now... I’m not quite sure how t’is will all shake out. You’ll have to tell me where we’re goin’.”
“Oh! Right, of course.” Persephone nodded. “I thought JJ would tell you the plan.”
Marvin glanced at JJ, raising an eyebrow. Sorry, he said. It slipped my mind and you never asked about anything other than getting here.
“T’at’s fair.” Marvin shrugged.
“We won’t be going any farther into the city cause we know the risk of IRIS,” Persephone said. “Aoife has also been worried about that. Instead, we’ll be heading to a nearby bookshop that’s really a cover for, uh, magic stuff.”
“Interesting,” Marvin commented. “Alrigh’. Lead the way, t’en.”
The four magicians led JJ and Marvin off the train station platform, across the tracks, and towards a minivan in the parking lot. All six of them climbed in from there, with JJ and Marvin taking the middle row of three. Persephone was in the passenger and Aoife was in the back row with the magician called Neil, while the guy identified as Dylan got in the driver’s seat and started the car. “I wanted to call an official Circle gathering for this, but I realized that would take too much attention,” Persephone explained as they headed onto the streets. “So it’s only going to be us.”
Why these two? JJ asked. I mean, they’re nice, but why them specifically? Do they have higher positions?
“Positions?” Persephone shook her head. “No, it’s just that Dylan has a license and Neil owns the shop we’re going to be meeting at.”
“And also, everyone likes us,” said Neil jokingly. “We know all the others’ phone numbers between the two of us. So we can fill everyone in later.”
JJ chuckled slightly. And... is there anything we can talk about on the way, or should we wait until we’re at this bookshop?
“Well, I’m curious why Marvin here is coming,” Persephone said. “I know you two are friends, but... is there any specific reason?”
“Ah, yes, actually,” Marvin said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cards, making sure they were all there. “Has Jems told you about t’ese?”
“Your magick cards,” Aoife said.
“Ah, so he has.”
“Actually your friends filled me in while we were in that hotel room waiting for Jameson to wake up,” Aoife said. “Your cards have runes on them, and if you arrange them certain ways you can make magickal rituals.”
“Yes, t’at’s all true.” Marvin nodded slowly. “But... ah... I-I haven’ really told any of my friends t’is, aside from Jems, but uh... I can... do certain t’ings wit’ the cards. T’ere are... runes... t’at... might come in handy?” He glanced out the car window. It felt weird to be talking about this in a public street, even if they were separated from that street by a layer of glass. “Ah, I-I’ll explain more once we get to t’is bookshop place. But, basic’ly I want t’hear your magician opinions on some of the t’ings the cards coul’ probably do.”
“Oh, that could be pretty helpful,” Persephone mused. “We have some ideas of our own, but I’m always open to new ones.”
JJ looked over at Marvin. Are you sure you want to share that with the Circle before you share it with our other friends?
“Hey, if you know an’ trust the Circle, I do too,” Marvin said. “Besides, they’ll probably have more of an idea of what to do wit’ the cards t’an the others.”
Our friends aren’t COMPLETELY clueless. I know they’ll be able to throw out ideas for that particular power, even if none of them are magical.
Marvin nodded. “Yeah. But... I-I want to take t’is chance now, you know? We don’ know when we’ll next be able to meet up wit’ your magician friends. Once we get home, I’ll fill the others in on the situation.”
Honestly, he wasn’t sure why he hadn’t told the others about the cards’ time abilities yet. It just... felt like so much. He didn’t fully understand the cards’ capabilities himself. If the others had questions, he wouldn’t be able to answer them. And that... was strange. He needed a baseline understanding before he started thinking about how the cards could help them, and he had no doubt the magicians could help him with that.
They drove for a while more before parking at the side of a street. They were in a more suburban area, the few shops in the area spread out and butting up right next to residential houses. Dylan parked the car and they all got out, walking to a building on the corner. There was a sign in the yard out front that read “Starfall Books,” but the place had clearly been converted from one of the many residential homes. It blended right in with its neighbors, except for the sign in the yard and the “Closed” sign hanging in the front door’s window. Neil walked up and unlocked the door, letting the whole group into the shop.
This place is lovely, JJ commented idly, looking around at the shelves and tables of books.
“Thanks,” Neil said. “But we’re not just going to hang out in the front here where people can look through the windows.”
Persephone nodded in agreement. “Come on, you guys.”
They headed through a door behind the purchase counter and ended up... in a tiny supply closet full of books. Marvin looked around nervously at the small space, and JJ quickly grabbed his hand and squeezed it supportively. Once they were all in the closet, Neil closed the door behind them. He whispered some strange words under his breath, and the edges of the door began to glow a deep blue, the magic tracing some symbols around the doorknob. Then the glow faded and he pushed the door open again, revealing that they were now somewhere similar, but different. The shelves and tables from downstairs were now on the ceiling, as if the world had suddenly flipped over. On top of the now-upside down shelves, stacked on what was the underside, are books of a different sort. Thick, leatherbound spellbooks. The whole space was fairly dark and dim, but lit by floating specks of yellow light drifting through the air. Marvin reached out to poke one, and his finger went right through it.
“Alright, does anyone want tea?” Neil asked, heading over to a corner where there was a handful of right-side-up furniture. Most notably, a counter with a portable stove on it, and a cabinet with glass doors, showing a kettle, teapot, teacups, and various other tea supplies inside.
I would like some, yes, JJ said.
“Yeah, might as well,” Marvin agreed.
Aoife and Persephone nodded as well.
The group sat down in a small seating area—once again, some of the only right-side-up furniture. Marvin and JJ took a seat on the same green sofa, and Marvin set his cards down on the coffee table in front of him. “So...” he said. “Ye had some ideas for ways to take down IRIS?”
“A few.” Aoife leaned forward. “The plan is to make sure they won’t come back, right? Well, the difficulty with that is that if we do anything too magical, they’ll definitely remember it. So we were trying to think of some more subtle ways. Like maybe modifying their memories?”
That seems a bit harsh, JJ said.
“You say t’is abou’ the people who kidnap and experiment on others,” Marvin pointed out.
That’s true. But Jackie got tricked into working for IRIS. If others got tricked into working for them, too, I would feel bad targeting them for no reason. JJ looked thoughtful. But if you could somehow target the people who know about the experiments, that could work...?
“The problem with that is finding the balance of power so we don’t do too much damage but we also get every last bit of the memory,” Persephone said.
“And also, they’ll still have the information in their database,” Aoife says. “So if they stumble upon that again, they could get re-interested. So we had another idea to somehow magically scour their database.”
“You can do t’at?!” Marvin gasped.
“If we team up together,” Persephone said. “Group spells are a lot more powerful than anything cast by a single magician. But also, if they notice the information disappearing, then that could be a problem.”
Maybe we could combine the memory spell with that? JJ suggested. Though... those would be two powerful spells back-to-back...
“Exactly, that’s the problem,” Persephone said. “If IRIS realizes what we’re doing at any point between casting the two spells, things could go wrong and the spell would be a waste.”
Neil brought over a tray with a teapot and some cups. “Thank you,” Aoife said, picking up the pot and pouring the tea. “We have a few more ideas, but if you two have any ideas of your own, we’d love to hear them.”
“Hm... well...” Marvin shuffled his cards nervously. “T’ese cards of mine... might have somet’ing to help. You see...” He pulled out the joker cards. “T’ese runes on the back... when used in the right way, they give me the power to... control time, i-in varyin’ ways.”
Silence. The magicians all stared at him in shock. “You... oh!” Persephone gasped. “Is that why JJ’s crystal ball has time magic in it?!”
“T’at’s what we t’ink, maybe?” Marvin said. He shrugged. “Maybe because I’ve been around it, or somet’ing.”
“Oh, speaking of that crystal ball.” Aoife stood up and took off the backpack he was wearing. “I brought that for you. Felt like you’d need it.” She reached inside and took out that black crystal sphere.
JJ blinked. Oh! Thank you. He hesitated, then pulled his sleeves over his hands and took the crystal ball. He didn’t want to touch it, just in case. So he just sat it in his lap.
“How’d you figure out that you have time magick?” Persephone asked, interested. “And what sort of things can you do with those cards?”
“Well, I’m not exactly sure of the limits yet,” Marvin said. “T’at’s... what I wanted to ask you all. I-I know t’at your magic is different from, uh... the magickal rituals t’ese cards are for. But... maybe you’d have some insight? As for how I figured it out, well...” He very quickly explained everything that happened in IRIS, most notably how a future version of him probably helped him out. The magicians all listened, completely silent and very intrigued.
“O...kay, then,” Aoife said slowly. “That’s... huh. So... the cards are the reason you’re in this time period, huh?”
Marvin nodded. “I accidentally transported myself here. So... if you need any proof of how powerful they can be, t’ere’s t’at.”
While Neil and Dylan muttered about how insane that was, Persephone got up and went over to scan the spellbooks on the upside-down shelves. JJ whistled for her attention, and when she looked back at him he asked, What are you looking for?
“Books about that particular rune alphabet,” Persephone said. “If you know the meaning of the runes, then you can put together more effective rituals.”
“Oh, ah, slight correction, we already knew what most o’them did,” Marvin said. “It was only t’ese spiral ones we couldn’ figure out, and t’at’s because they were sabotaged.”
“Ah.” Persephone paused. “Well, in that case, it sounds like the only limits to the cards are your imagination.”
You don’t have a book of rituals for them, then? JJ asked.
“We have a few witchcraft books lying around in all our various places,” Persephone said.
“ABIM has more,” Aoife added helpfully.
“But I’ve never heard of something like these cards before,” Persephone continued. “They’re not... common witchcraft tools. Sure, witches use tarot cards for all sorts of stuff, but that’s more like divination, like what Aoife does. But it never occurred to me that you could use cards for magick rituals. So... I don’t think you’ll find any advice or rituals listed.”
“Oh.” Marvin looked at the back of one of the cards—the ace of hearts, specifically, one he used in almost all the rituals he’d come up with so far. His eyes traced the golden lines coming from the rune. “So... it’s like... a set of guidelines. Suggestions for how to use the cards in rituals. But t’ere could be so many combinations out t’ere... I coul’ do abou’ anyt’ing wit’ the possibilities.”
Just like a normal deck of cards, JJ said. You’re always dropping that fun fact about how there are more possible ways to stack 52 cards than there are seconds in the universe so far.
“Well I don’ know if t’ere are t’at many magick rituals out t’ere,” Marvin said. “But... I s’pose it’s the same idea.” He traced the lines of the ace’s rune for a second, then looked up at the magicians again right as Persephone sat down once more. “So... for the time magick. You t’ink... I coul’ do anyt’ing related to time t’at I wanted?”
“Anything that you can imagine,” Aoife said. “Coming up with stuff to do is probably going to be the tricky part. Risky, too. We don’t want to send you through decades of time again.”
“Alrigh’. In t’at case, I’ll be takin’ suggestions.” Marvin leaned forward, fanning out the deck of cards. “How d’you t’ink time magick coul’ help us wit’ IRIS?”
Aoife and Persephone glanced at each other. “Well, obviously, you’ll have to eventually figure out how to pull that trick of ‘giving your past self some cards,’ unless we want to start a paradox,” Persephone said.
JJ shook his head. Those are always bad in science fiction. You want it to be a closed loop. Like that episode of Doctor Who I showed you, with the weeping angels.
“Oh god, don’ remind me of t’ose freaky t’ings.” Marvin shuddered. “I was wary of statues for weeks. In any case, I already figured I’d need t’do t’at event’ally.”
“Well, you could probably use it to look into the future,” Aoife said. “But I could also do that. In fact, I probably should, to make sure that IRIS isn’t going to be catching onto us anytime soon...”
“Oh!” Persephone gasped. “I have an idea. What if you used this time magick to make it so IRIS never found out about you guys in the first place?”
The cards fell from Marvin’s hand as he stared at her in shock, scattering across the floor. He didn’t go to pick them up, and neither did JJ, who sat still as a statue beside him. “You mean... make it so... all of t’is... never happened?” Marvin whispered. “Wouldn’ t’at also be one of t’ose paradox t’ings?”
Jameson nodded. Yes, exactly. If there was no IRIS here, then we wouldn’t have reason to go back in time.
“Well, not necessarily,” Persephone said slowly. “Time magic is very strange. We don’t know how the world would deal with a paradox.”
“You have fifty-two runes at your disposal,” Aoife said. “If you use all of them, that would amount to a powerful ritual. One with a lot of moving parts. You could, theoretically, protect yourself from the flow of time. Or perhaps you could impart knowledge of IRIS and what they’ll do onto your past self, so that he—or, uh, you?—would always go back in time and prevent IRIS from finding out about you, anyway.”
Didn’t you just say that figuring out the things you could do with the cards was risky? JJ said. Is stopping IRIS really worth the risk of a paradox? What if we destroy the universe?
“From everything wizards have studied about time magic and chronomancy, I think it’s unlikely that the universe would collapse in on itself,” Aoife said. “It’s a lot more resilient than you think.”
No, we can’t do this, JJ said.
“Jems... uh...” Marvin cleared his throat. “I know t’ere’s bound to be risks, but... if we coul’ really make it so IRIS never knew about us... if we coul’ really make sure t’at none of t’is ever happened... t’at nothing ever happened to you, or to Hen, or to Anti... isn’ it worth the risk?”
I think you’re wildly underestimating the risk factor here! JJ said, gaping at him.
“Obviously we’ll do some more testin’ and smaller stuff first,” Marvin said. “I t’ink the first order of business is figurin’ out the future-self-cards trick. But... eventually... wouldn’ it be nice? Once I’ve really mastered t’ese cards, I coul’—I coul’ make it so t’at you were never hurt. So t’at Henrik never had to deal with t’ose fucks surgically shovin’ machines inside him. S-so t’at Jackie never left us to join them! So t’at Anti never had to be restrained in the hospital. Wouldn’ it be better... if that never happened?” His voice dropped to a whisper for that last part.
Jameson’s eyes welled with tears. He looked away. It would be nice, he signed slowly. But we can’t do that. Let’s try to come up with something else. Aoife—
“Jems, we literally can do t’at!” Marvin leaned over and scrambled to pick up the cards. “Maybe—maybe some day in the far future, we don’ have to jump righ’ to time travel now—”
Well we can’t think about the far future until we DEAL with the now! JJ said, snapping his fingers to get Marvin’s attention. If we can’t get IRIS off our backs soon, they’ll find us, and take away those cards, and we’ll never get the chance. We need a better solution for right now.
“Look, I can’ be the only one who’s ever come up wit’ a time travel ritual,” Marvin said. “We can do some research! Your magician friends can help us wit’ t’at!” He gestured at Aoife, Persephone, and the other two, all of whom were glancing around awkwardly like they’d rather not be here. “Maybe we can figure it out sooner t’an you t’ink—and t’en—t’en it’ll all be—we’ll never have gone t’rough all t’at! Hell, maybe we coul’ even figure out a way to get Distorter off our backs wit’ t’is time travel idea. Make it so he never found me again—make it so he never got so interested in Jackie an’ the rest of you—We coul’ be okay! Everyt’ing would be fine!”
“But then what would it all be for, Marvin?!” Jameson shouted, standing up. “All the suffering, all the marks it left—what would it be for?!”
Marvin jumped in surprise, staring up at Jameson. “I...” He whispered. Then he cleared his throat and pushed himself to his feet as well. “I don’ understand what you mean,” he said, making sure to keep his voice soft. He knew what it meant when Jameson actually spoke. “We weren’... sufferin’ for a reason in t’ere. It... it never meant... anyt’ing. Not t’at sufferin’ ever means anyt’ing.”
Jameson looked away, taking deep breaths. I know. I know that all the things IRIS did only hurt us, and didn’t help anyone at all. The same with Distorter. But... I don’t know. He shook his head. If you took away everything that happened to us... we wouldn’t be the same people anymore. We wouldn’t have any of the same memories.
“The memories of IRIS only hurt us,” Marvin said quietly. “They only hurt you. I’ve heard you at night. I know what t’ose sorts of dreams do to you.”
Okay, yes, I would rather not have the nightmares, JJ admitted. But I don’t want to... I don’t want to sacrifice who I am for them.
“You’d still be Jems! Jus’—Jems wit’ less trauma. You can’ actually want the trauma.”
“Obviously I don’t!” Jameson snapped. “But who would I be without these experiences?!”
“You’d be Jameson Jackson!” Marvin insisted.
“But I wouldn’t be me,” Jameson insisted right back. “I would be some other Jameson. And—and I’m happy for the other version of me in some other world who didn’t go through IRIS and Distorter. But he’s so different from me. Marvin, if you go back in time and erase all that suffering, then the us in this present disappear. And—and—a-and even with everything, I—I-I-I still like this version of me!” Tears in his eyes began to spill over. “And I still like this version of you! And of everyone else, too! And I don’t know if—I don’t know what the us without all this would be like. Maybe we wouldn’t even be friends.”
Marvin raised his hand, half-reaching out. “We might still be—”
“You can’t tell me the relationship would be the same,” Jameson interrupted. “You can’t tell me that even with all the shit Distorter put us through, it didn’t bring us closer together. I do wish it never happened, and I-I-I would’ve like to—to be this close with everyone without everything we went through. But I don’t... I d-don’t know if that’s... possible.” His voice steadily became more hoarse as he talked, until the very last word was barely a croak. He coughed into his elbow, shaking his head. Besides, he continued in sign language. The five of us aren’t completely isolated. There could be hundreds of people we’ve minutely affected. We can’t ask every single one of them if they’re okay with their reality maybe changing. We can’t do that to them.
Marvin didn’t have any words to say to that. He glanced away—and remembered that the two of them weren’t alone in the room. The four magicians were staring at them. Silently. “Ah... sorry,” he mumbled.
“No, uh... clearly you both needed to talk about this,” Persephone said slowly. “Go... go on.”
Well now it felt way too personal to keep going. But... Marvin knew he couldn’t leave Jameson hanging like that. He gently grabbed his arm and walked to the side, taking Jameson with him. “Jems,” he said quietly. “I... If it was jus’ me, I-I woul’ rather not live wit’ all the pain.” He took a deep breath. “But... you’re righ’. We all affect so many more people t’an we t’ink we do. And... I s’pose I can sort of understand where you’re comin’ from. If I had the chance... I wouldn’ undo my mistake of comin’ to t’is time. Not if it meant I never met you or the others.” He smiled hesitantly.
Jameson wiped his face with his sleeve. Thank you, he said. That’s... very sweet. And I do agree, if anything should be reversed, it’s what IRIS did. That... truly means nothing. He paused, taking a deep breath. But who knows what that would do? For all we know, it might just make things worse. I know that we can, technically, if we figure it out... we can technically undo our mistakes and our trauma. But... if we did... that would just be running away. And then it all would’ve been for nothing.
Marvin nodded. “Okay. I understand.” He put his arm around Jameson’s shoulders, pulling him close. “We won’ try t’at, t’en. But you know, if you ever change your mind in the future, I’m holdin’ you to t’is moment.”
JJ laughed, then coughed. I’m fine, he said. And I don’t see myself changing my mind anytime soon, but good to know. He paused. Should we even tell the others that this is a... theoretical option?
“Eh.” Marvin shrugged. “We might as well. I get the feeling the others will be more on your side. ‘Cept maybe Jackie. But he’s too responsible to fuck with time.”
Yeah, he has Rama and Michelle to worry about. JJ nodded. Alright. I’m better now. I just... needed to talk about that, I guess. I didn’t expect to feel so strongly about it.
“No problem.” Marvin grinned. “Now. Let’s finish up the meeting, hm? We still need ideas.”
Yes, of course. JJ looked back at the others, who were all trying not to listen. He walked back over, Marvin by his side. Sorry about that, he said. Let’s continue.
“Are you okay, Jameson?” Aoife asked quietly.
JJ nodded and sat back down. I guess it meant more to me than I thought.
“Well, for what it’s worth, you’re really right about the risk,” Persephone said. “I think I got a little too excited at the thought of time travel. I didn’t want to... push you, or anything.”
You weren’t pushing us, JJ assured her. I think we all got carried away.
“Time magic must be treated with the utmost caution,” Aoife said decisively. “I think we all forgot that for a minute.”
“Yeah.” Marvin nodded. He picked up his cards from the coffee table and carefully straightened out the deck. “Now. Let’s try to come up wit’ more cautious t’ings we can do wit’ t’ese, shall we?”
———————
The world around him was gray. Dull. The sky was clouded over, and yet, it wasn’t dark. It was just gray. All around him, the grass was gray, the trees were gray, the old wall crumbling into bits was gray.
And immediately, Anti knew something was up.
“Where are you, you fuck?” Anti muttered, eyes scanning the field. “I know your tricks by now.”
Laughter echoed through the area. Between one glance and the next, a figure appeared in the distance. “What’s the matter, Aodhán?” Despite how far the figure was, the voice sounded like it came from right in front of him. “Do you not like the familiar scenery?”
“Yeah yeah, I get what you’re trying to do,” Anti muttered. “‘Oooo, look, here’s the place you fled to when you were too emotional to feel your feelings in your house.’ Fuck you. I get it. You’re trying to drag up bad memories. Well I’m not buying it.”
He blinked, and when he opened his eyes again, Distorter was a bit closer. He could see the grin breaking across his face. “Tell yourself that. I know every inch of your mind. I know there was a jolt of emotion the moment you saw this place.”
Anti frowned. “Fine. I can’t help my feelings, but I can help how I react to them. And by now, I know how to not give you the shit you want.”
Another blink, and Distorter was even closer, suddenly within arm’s reach. “Maybe you know my usual tricks, but I’m able to adjust.”
“Yeah, well, so am I,” Anti growled. “I can get under your skin too.”
Distorter laughed. “Oh really? What—”
“I know why you hate Stacy,” Anti blurted.
Distorter stopped. His smile was frozen on his face as his head slowly tilted to the side. “Oh? You do?”
“Well, no, you don’t hate her,” Anti said. “You hate what she represents. Who she represents, who she reminds you of—GAH!”
A hand shot out, wrapping around Anti’s neck. Distorter’s grin remained the same as his blackened hand squeezed Anti’s throat. “What makes you think I even hate her in the first place?” he whispered. “What if I just don’t care about her? All the rest of you are so much more interesting.”
Anti took a deep breath, finding that he could still breathe despite the hand locked around his throat. Which meant... none of this was real. Distorter couldn’t really be here, even though the fingers locked around his neck felt actually painful. Focus. If he could breathe, he could talk. “You... hate her,” he said slowly. “Because... you probably... cared about her once.”
Distorter laughed hysterically... but, was it just Anti’s imagination, or did it sound forced? “Oh? Do go on.”
The pain around Anti’s neck increased, but he breathed through it, focusing on the motion. “She was your family once, wasn’t she?” he whispered. “Your sister-in-law. Maybe you didn’t know her that well. But every time you look in her face, you see the woman you married. And the children you ha—”
Suddenly, Anti’s head slammed against the ground, ears ringing from the impact. “Don’t you fucking dare talk about them,” Distorter snarled.
Anti blinked wildly. “Why... not?” he breathed. “You don’t... like to talk about them, huh? Do you... not like... to think about how... you killed them?”
Distorter’s grip on him lessened.
“Why did you do it?” Anti asked, staring up into Distorter’s black eyes. “I... don’t believe... you suddenly snapped. I think... I think you cared about them. So... what happened? Why did you—”
“SHUT UP!!!”
Distorter’s nails dug into Anti’s throat. His other hand shot forward, joining in clawing and squeezing. Anti screamed in pain, back arching as he grabbed at Distorter’s hands—
—
And then his eyes flew open as he gasped for air. He shot upright, grabbing at his throat as he looked around the room in a hurry. His heart was pounding in his chest. This was one of the bedrooms in the apartment they rented. It all looked pretty normal. No sign of Distorter anywhere... but that was no guarantee, was it? At least this place seemed real.
The door eased open, and a small figure—well, not as small as he used to be—leaned into the room. “Are you okay, Dad?” Will asked.
“Hm? Oh. Uh, yeah.” Anti nodded. “More or less. Why?”
“There was a thud sound,” Will said.
“A thud sound? Uh... don’t know what that was, to be honest.” Anti looked around. “Maybe I hit the wall or something... I was probably tossing and turning.”
“Not a good nap, then?” Someone else leaned into the doorway: Jack, bringing a green glow with him from Sam sitting on his shoulder.
“No.” Anti shook his head. His memories felt scattered, disjointed from what he just experienced, but it was all coming back. JJ and Marvin left for the city. He’d been nervous, so Jackie suggested he try to nap or something to take his mind off it. Anti had agreed—he hadn’t been sleeping well, anyway. The sleeper sofa was not all that comfy. So he took advantage of JJ and Marvin being gone to try sleeping in one of the actual beds.
“Maybe you shouldn’t be sleeping in Marvin’s bed, Dad,” Will said. “He was sick, remember? The pillow is probably still a little pukey.”
Anti laughed. “Don’t worry, I checked. But if you’re so concerned, I’ll take over Volt’s bed.”
Jack raised an eyebrow. “Gonna keep napping? Thirty minutes not enough for you?”
“Not when most of it was spent trying to get to sleep in the first place.” Anti stood up, untangling the blankets from around him in the process, and stretched. He looked back over at the doorway and smiled slightly. “Hey. You know I love you, right, bud?”
Will blinked. “Yeah. I know that. Why’re you saying it right now?”
“Just thinking about stuff.” Anti shrugged, looking away. Distorter had been a father once. And... somehow, he truly believed that he’d cared about the family he’d built. Otherwise, he would’ve tried to kill Stacy long ago instead of constantly warning her to leave. Maybe it wasn’t true. Maybe he was giving the undead mind manipulator too much benefit of the doubt. But... it just felt right. Why else would Distorter always spare the kids? Why else would he constantly get on Anti’s case for being a ‘bad’ father, why else would he tell Will that he would be a better dad than Anti? There was something there. He just... couldn’t imagine what could’ve driven someone who cared about their family to do such a thing.
Or... maybe he could imagine it. Anti knew he’d made lots of mistakes in the past himself. Some that were... pretty aggressive. Pretty harmful to others. Maybe... he could imagine something very well. But just because he could imagine it, didn’t mean he agreed with Distorter’s actions or could understand him at all.
“Okay.” Will shrugged. “I love you too, Dad.”
“And I love you too, cousin.” Jack made finger guns.
Anti grinned. “Oh fuck off, Jack. This is a father-son bonding moment.”
“Fine, fine.” Jack laughed. “Sam says hi, by the way. And that they care about you too.” Sam waved their tail-nerve as Jack headed out.
“Good night, Dad,” Will said. “Or, uh... good... afternoon? It’s almost lunchtime, do you want us to wake you up for food?”
“Nah, just set some aside for me,” Anti said. “The guys know what I like.” He smiled. “Love you.”
“Love you.” Will smiled back, and closed the bedroom door, leaving it dark inside.
Anti flopped down on the bottom bunk, staring at the underside of the bunk above him. Had Distorter appeared in his dreams just to mess with him? Did he want to control Anti again? Well, Anti wasn’t going to let that happen. He wasn’t going to let something like that control him ever again. He took a deep breath, then closed his eyes and soon managed to drift off once more.
Prologue | Chapter 1 Taglist: @brokentimewatch
It's not too long before two cars pull up to the train station. Out of the first one steps a tall dark-skinned person with chin-length hair. They talk with Anti briefly, demanding an explanation but accepting that this isn't the time and leaving with Will, who Anti gives a short hug before he heads out. And out of the second one--
"Why the FACK can we not have five minutes of peace in our goddamn lives?!" Schneep looks pissed and annoyed, but he softens when he sees Bro. "Ah... good to see you again, of course, but it seems there is bad news, too."
Bro shrinks a bit at Schneep's anger but he also can't help but laugh because, same. "haha- I feel that bro..." He then looks scared and bites his lip. "Yeah... I need to find Alt... who knows what Mag is doing to him... or to one of your guys- i think... he really wanted Jameson last time, didn't he?"
Jackie sighs. "Are you okay? Anti said something about you healing really fast, but I can take a look, if you want. I've patched up this guy often enough." He vaguely gestures at Schneep.
Bro then looks back at Jackie and tries to smile, lifting up his singed shirt. "Uh- you can try, if you like. I dunno if it's like... good or not. I don't really... get checked often. Gotta keep go go going, you know? Hero work is never done..."
Dr. Parker can see the edges of the burn are a bit darker, tinged green. But the main part seems pretty much filled with healing skin, raised and pink. A bit hot to the touch but also cracking and Bro squirms uncomfortably. "Fucking shit- god i hate how it itches, jesuss!"
"Sorry," Jackie mumbles. "I didn't really bring anything to treat ichiness." He crouches to get a closer look. "...well, it's definitely healing, but there's some green... tinge here. It might be because of magic. In which case, I'm not qualified to do anything.”
Bro nods and pushes himself to sit up straighter, "S'probably the magic- green fire sucks ass, it lingers a bit longer than I would like. But thanks for checking, Doc."
"No problem," Jackie smiles. "Happy to help. If you feel up to move, we should go meet up with JJ and Marvin. I think—"
Before he can continue, Anti's phone starts to ring. Well, not ring, it's on silent, but the vibration is loud and noticeable. "Shit, sorry," he says, pulling it out. He looks at the Caller ID and frowns in confusion. Then picks it up. "What is it? Whoa!" He holds the phone away from his ear. On the other side a man is yelling. "Fucking shit, calm down! You scared the bejeezus out of me. I—what? Sam? I..." He glances at the others. "Hang on, you all keep talking." He turns to the side and listens to the call.
Bro readjusts himself after being checked on and then jumps slightly at Anti’s exclamation.
"That is probably not good," Schneep mutters. "Neither is it good that Magnificent may be in our world." He laughs. "Though I do wonder now... He has other magic, but those tricks... I wonder if..."
Jackie gives him an odd look. "I don't think we should go testing stuff like that out. We need to come up with some way to get Chase and Alt home--and Magnificent, too."
Bro looks back and studies Schneep with curiously, "Wait testing what out? You got something you think could help against Mag, Volt??"
"Heh." Schneep gives him a wan smile. "Well... a lot has changed since we got sucked into your universe. I do not... wish to discuss it too much, but I will simply say that our villain's illusions and manipulation no longer works on me." If Bro looks close, he'll notice that Schneep is playing with his hands in an odd way. Running a finger down the side of his left hand.
Bro looks excited by this and he grins, "Hey! Maybe that will work- but... I dunno- Mag's magic is... weird. I guess- I dunno much about magic though."
“How'd you get here, by the way?” Jackie asks, “Anti didn't fill in those details in the group chat. Only something about Magnificent doing shit. Do you remember anything specific? If we want to get you back home, it'd be easiest to do it the same way... probably."
Chase looks back at Jackie and nods, "Ah right- so he... he took Alt from our house, puppeted him in a super horrible way that isn't.... like him- not unless he's desperate. and he was... cuz he found this like... doorway thingy- But he needed Alt to glitch to work it. He used his magic and alt's glitches and then there was like- an explosion and i... woke up on the train tracks." He then frowns and tries to remember, "mmm... i dunno if something like that would be here... it was in some shady basement of this fucked up agency we have in our world- calls themselves Sclera."
"That's a werid name for an evil organization," Jackie says absentmindedly. "What is a shlcerla? I mean--sclera?" He sounds the word out carefully.
Schneep sighs. "Jackie, I thought you were a doctor."
"I am! That doesn't mean I know everything! Why, do you know about a sclera?"
"I do." Schneep grins smugly. "I wondered if there was a word for it in English, turns out, yes. It is the white part of your eye."
Jackie is silent for a moment. "Part of an eye... Like an iris?"
Schneep's grin fades.
Jackie turns to look at Bro. "We might have something like that here. There's this group called IRIS, they study weird shit. Anomalies. They call them ALTRs. And they... do a lot of fucked up stuff besides that." He glances at Schneep, then quickly looks away. "Maybe they'll have something to help. I think... I think I heard about them talking about other worlds..."
Bro also seems to pale, gripping slightly over his heart. "... Sclera does that too- but... with magic." He narrows his eyes and thinks, "If Iris is like Sclera then.... then yeah- that might be our best bet..." He shudders though but tries to hide it. "God- I hate places like that though- fucking freaky scientific-messed-up bullshit..."
Schneep looks at him sympathetically. He opens his mouth to say something, but--
"Fuck!" Anti shouts, drawing everyone's attention. "Okay, take Sam home and make sure they're okay, okay?! The rest of us will check on them. Yes, I'm sure! Yeah! No, stay there. Don't--don't let anything happen to you." His voice softens. "Be careful. Okay. Bye." He hangs up and spins around to look back at everyone else. "Okay. So. Chase was right. Magnificent is fighting Jameson."
Chase zips up to his feet, eyes wide, "Oh no! I hate when I'm right!" He curses and then adjusts his utility belt, pulling out his phone and looks about ready to burst into the air. "Okay where is he?? We can't- we can't let Mag get him again!"
"He's by the bus stop by his house," Anti says.
"Fuck! That's far!" Schneep curses.
"Not if I run red lights!" Jackie's head snaps towards his car, then back to Bro. "Hey, can you fly or do you need a lift?"
Bro nods and shoots into the air to hover, "I'll fly ahead! I know the look of Mag's magic by now, just point me in the right direction!"
"It's that way!" Anti points. "West and a bit south. We'll head there on our own. Remember to text us if you need to, calls might not work!"
Meanwhile, Schneep grabs Jackie and starts pulling him towards the car.
Bro nods, storing away his phone. "Right! Be careful!" He then blasts into the air and follows Anti's instructions, trying to push himself to fly as fast as he- scanning the area below for any signs of magic.
"Good luck!" Jackie calls. Then the three of them run to the car.
-----------
That was risky, JJ says.
Marvin smiles at him. "But it paid off, didn' it?" He pushes his cards back into a single deck on the dining room counter.
I suppose. JJ pauses. He somehow...drained some of my magic. I still feel...weak.
"Really? Fuckin' bastard..." Marvin mutters, then frowns. "T'at shouldn' be possible, t'ough. It should've brough' you back to the state you were in before. Did I do somet'ing wrong...?"
JJ shakes his head. You didn't do anything wrong, he reassures him. This is just... tricky.
Before Marvin can respond, there's a knock at the door. "They're here already?" Marvin says, surprised. "Okay, I'll get it." He heads into the entrance hall and opens the door.
But instead of any of his friends, Alt Brody falls into their house.
Alt was resting against the door as soon as he knocked on it- and as soon as it opens he stumbles forward, his head heavy. But, it's momentarily cleared of fog as he raises his red stained face to meet Marvin's eyes. He's still gripping his arm, magic pulsing weakly. "...m'rvin... moore...?" He slurs, confusion clear on his face. Then, he feels a wave of dizziness crash onto him that has him falling towards the ground.
"What the--?!" Marvin shoots forward and barely manages to catch Alt. He almost falls himself in the process but stays up. For now. "Jems! It's--it's t'at Anti from the other world!"
JJ rushes into the the front hall. He gasps at what he sees. What's wrong with him?!
"I don' know! Ah--a little help?" His legs are starting to go out.
JJ nods and hurries over, transfering support of Alt from Marvin to him. Living room, he signs awkwardly. Marvin nods, and the two of them move into the other room, where they set Alt down on the sofa.
There's a voice in Alt's mind. So familiar. {This is good,} it says. {Do as you would for now. But that man with the mustache...you should try to get rid of him when you have the chance. Knock him out...or worse. That'd be good, too. That would make me happy~}
Alt's eyes seem distant as something whispers in his ears, letting the others take him and move him into the living room. Even when hes out on the couch, He's still for a second, staring out ahead. Then, he shakes out this head and looks in between Marvin and Jameson. He feels really sick, his body is shaking in a way he can't really control. But... he knows these guys... right? He weakly shakes his head again and tries to stop the trembling in his corrupted arm.
"Are you alrigh', lad?" Marvin asks.
"..hngh... n-no- not... r-really..." Alt pants, feeling faint and leans back against the back of the sofa. "M-Mag... Mag did somethin' to... to m'magic... s'hurts... and I... i dunno... what's...." His eyelids flutter like he's ready to pass out again but he shakes his head to try to stay awake. "m'broth'r... i... i needa find Chase...I... I gotta s-stop Mag..."
JJ frowns. Who?
"Oh! Yes, Chase!" Marvin nods. "He was the one who isn' here, remember?"
Understanding dawns on JJ's face and he nods. Yes, he's the one Anti mentioned. Don't worry, Alt, our Anti saw him, he's fine and on his way. He uses the same name sign for Alt as the Henrik in Alt's universe: A-lightning.
"As for Magnificent, the bastard..." Marvin grumbles. "I'm sure he'll be comin' to us sooner or later. We have time to prepare."
Yes, get some rest and recover, Alt, JJ adds.
Alt seems comforted by seeing a familar sign, his chest suddenly aching for his friend. But, Hen would be in danger here... its good he's still back home. He almost wants to nod to them- he wants to relax- when he stiffens, blood starting to try to leak out of his eye again.
{Just wait here? Wait for him to come for you? No, that seems like a bad idea, doesn't it? They're trying to stop us from going after him.}
"... w-we can't j'ust wait here... w-we'll be just s-sitting ducks! We... we gotta... gotta stop him... s'mehow..." Alt's brain was fuzzy on the details- god he'd give anything to use his magic right now. He needs... he needs to get rid of this corruption.
He looks up at Jameson, head fuzzy as its assaulted with suggestions. Knock him out. Or worse. Make me happy. get rid of him. "y... you... do you know how... how to get rid'f dark magic...?" He shakily holds out his arm to Jameson, showing off the claws marks that match the ones on his own. Though, Alt's seem much more severe, pulsing with purple magic with every tremor of his muscles. JJ's are dark like stains- more just a sign of what was used to steal his magic.
JJ tries to hide his alarm at the marks on Alt's arm--and the ones on his own. We don't have to deal with black magic on a regular basis like you do, JJ says, but I'm sure I have a purification spell upstairs somewhere. I can check my book of shadows.
"T'at's a great idea," Marvin says. "We can take care of t'at, and t'en we'll talk about how to stop Magnificent."
JJ nods. He turns and starts leaving the room, heading towards the stairs.
{Go with him.} The voice comes with a bit more of a push than the last times. Some fog rolls in with the command.
Alt doesn't hesitate to push himself off the couch, the command to follow JJ filling his head with nothing else. He doesn't even look at Marvin as he stumbles after the magician.
This was good... he can get this black magic fixed... and then get rid of the magician.
"Alt...?" Marvin stares, confused, as Alt follows JJ upstairs. It's not too weird, maybe he just wants to get the magic taken care of right away, but... Was it just him, or was there something... on Alt's face? Just in case, he hurries back to the kitchen where he left the cards.
JJ glances back at Alt. Oh, you want to come? Alright, I'd be happy to show you my workroom. He smiles and continues up the stairs.
The workroom is halfway through being reorganized, with some of the books on the shelves and desks where they're supposed to be and some on stacked on the floor around the central table. And on the table itself is a black crystal sphere, nestled on a purple cushion.
Alt nods to Jameson, and looks dazedly around the house and the workroom as he's lead through.
When Alt looks at the crystal, he sees flickers of other people's faces in the reflection. They all look familiar, and yet... different. Some are wearing masks. Some are children. And there's one with a slit neck, green strings holding it closed.
Alt pauses and stares at the crystal, eyes widening slightly as he saw the visions within them. What... what was-
But none of this is important.
Oh. It didn't matter. Any concern that was trying to surface was quickly stuffed under heavy fog.
JJ goes right for the desk, sorting through the books there until he finds what he's looking for. He then skims that book, and after a few seconds, smiles triumphantly. Hand me your arm, he says, putting the open book on the desk.
It takes a second for Alt to react to Jameson, more blood slithering down his face. But, he turns and wordlessly offers his corrupted arm to him, staring intensely at his face.
JJ gently takes Alt's arm. He hesitates for a moment, glancing back at the instructions in the book. His eyes start glowing a bright blue, and that same blue light encases his hands. He carefully presses his palm against the claw marks. A cooling magic washes over the marks. It takes a couple waves, but soon the corruption of the dark magic disappears.
There we are, JJ says, letting go of Alt's arm and smiling at him.
...Wait.
Something... Something is wrong...
Jameson blinks. He squints at Alt's face. What is...
It's blood.
Jameson gasps and takes a step back. How did he not notice it before?!
{Now.}
The second the black magic is cleared, electric magic builds up around Alt and he starts to glitch again. Then, he throws out a hand and sends a wave of blue green electricity at Jameson.
Jameson lets out a little squeak--the closest to a shout he can manage right now-- and throws up a clumsy shield. Luckily, it blocks most of the electricity. What gets through isn't enough to shock him. Alt, snap out of it! he signs, backing up. He doesn't have the magic for another fight after Magnificent drained him. And he doesn't want to fight Alt! Glancing around, he rushes for the open doorway.
That familiar sign has Alt hesitating, something trying to spark in his foggy mind. But, that hesitation quickly leaves as Jameson starts to run. Alt tries to glitch in front of him, throwing out more barrages of charged magic.
Jameson skids to a halt, surprised by Alt's sudden appearance. Before he can recover or try that new teleportation spell again, Alt is throwing electric magic at him. Again he tries to conjure a shield but the magic breaks through this time. This time he manages a scream as the magic shocks across his skin.
Downstairs, Marvin's head snaps up at the sound of JJ's cry. "Jems?!" he gasps. He runs for the stairs, tightening his grip on his cane and the cards, already thinking of what combination could help. Was it Alt? Had he really seen what he thought?!
Alt doesn't hesitate again to glitch towards Jamie- and this time he attempts to grab Jameson's neck and then throw him into the wall, pressing hard against his throat. There's no recognition in his eyes as blood pools out of them. He thinks he might hear another voice- but its faint and it doesn't matter. He needs to get rid of the magician.
Jameson gasps in surprise when Alt grabs him. He pulls at his hands, trying to pry them away before something could happen--!
And he manages to push Alt away just in time. He scrambles backwards across the floor until he hits the central table. The black crystal ball is almost jostled from it's spot.
A voice comes from down the hall. "H-hang on, Jems!" Marvin shouts. He's struggling with the stairs, pushing himself faster.
Jameson nods. He ducks his head and crosses his arms. A blue dome appears around him, wavering for a second before solidifying.
Alt tsks quietly under his breath and then lashes out and throws lightning magic over and over at the shield. Trying to get it to crack-
The shield shudders with every hit, but it doesn't break. And yet JJ knows it will only be a matter of time. He feels his strength failing.
"Jems! Alt!" And then Marvin rushes forward, almost collapsing in the doorway of the room. He takes in the situation quickly--yes, he thought it was something like that.
Alt pauses in his attack to turn towards Marvin, regarding him with a slight head tilt. He's panting slightly, sweat dripping down his face and his hands trembling. His magic is being depleted really quickly so soon after getting drained by that curse. Yet, he needs to keep going. He has to.
Quickly, Marvin bends over and places three cards on the ground in a triangle formation: Five of Diamond - Six of Heart - Queen of Spade
Jameson's shield is reinforced, curving golden lines running over itse surface in a geometric pattern. He breathes easier.
Marvin hears a voice in his head. {That's not really fair, is it? Have you forgotten whose side your on? Or are you too afraid to remember?} He flinches, pushing away the accompanying fog.
At the same time, Alt hears it say something different. {A friend of ours has lost his way...so sad. He shouldn't be here. Make him leave.}
.... he lost his way? Well... Alt hated using these spells but- if they needed to convince Marvin then... Alt flares out a hand to his side, and a collection of glitches forms beside him- and then forms a wobbly electric field of magic that swirls in hues of green blue and white. Though the edges are harsher than Mag's, the colors are soothing and easy to look at. Maybe they could just lull you to sleep... make you forget all your pain, just for a second.
Marvin isn't expecting it. He looks down for a moment, fumbling with the cards--he'll need to use five or more, he's not leaving this to chance--and when he looks up again... there it is. An electric spiral hovering next to Alt. What? How... strange. But... nice. Marvin's eyes trace the spiral's motion, the ever-inward movement. His eyelids feel heavy all of a sudden.
JJ sees what's happening. "Marv--!" he tries to shout, but it breaks off into a wheezing exhale. The reinforcement around his shield stays--it will stay until the card formation is disrupted--but Marvin's other cards flutter to the floor, followed shortly by him collapsing to his knees, eyes blinking slowly...
"Sleep." Alt drones out to Marvin, watching him coldly and emotionlessly, pushing magic into his words.
He thinks he hears something slamming open from downstairs- but he's focused on his task. Nothing else matters. He doesn't even consider anything else is wrong until suddenly he's being tackled to the ground, his head hitting it hard enough for him to see spots.
"O-Oh my god, Alt!" A man in a pink mask is gasping desperately over him, looking worried. ...why...? No no wait- he's... he's important- he's so so important. Alt makes a choked noise of pain, the fog in his head hurting all of sudden. No no no its hurts- why does it hurt?
"C- Ch...!" Alt tries to choke out, shaky hand trying to grab onto his jacket.
For the others- as soon as Jameson shouted out, Bro flew past a house with bright lights flickering in different hues in the windows. He recognized the color of some of them- and it wasn't Mag... it was Alt!
He hurried down to the door of the apartment then tried to doorknob- not wanting to cause too much damage to the house. By some miracle it was open and Bro skids in and looks around, shouting out, "Alt?! ALT!!"
He sees the hues of blue and greens and doesn't hesitate to fly up the stairs- and hovers just a bit above them to see his brother trying to entrance Marvin. He yells out and tackles Alt back farther into the room- the magic bursting into pixels as the two boys crash into the bookshelves in the corner. Marvin can feel the influence leave him like he's waking up from being underwater.
Marvin gasps, starting backwards. JJ stares with wide eyes at Chase and Alt. His shield finally disappears as he stands up and scrambles over to Marvin's side. He reaches down to help him up.
"I-I... what?" Marvin shakes the image of that spiral out of his mind. "Th-t'at was—he can do t'at...?" he whispers. Then he looks up at JJ. "A-are you... alrigh'...?"
JJ smiles weakly. I should be asking you that.
"'M... fine. Physic'lly." Marvin takes JJ's hand and lets him pull him to his feet. In unison, the two of them turn and stare at Alt and Bro. "Y-you're the—the hero from the other world. Chase. Chase!" Marvin shakes his head again. "Chase, Alt's bein'—Distorter's in his head, I—oh!" And then Marvin gets back down on the ground and starts gathering up the cards. "T-try to get t'rough to him, if you can', I-I can try somet'ing!"
Bro looks back at the others and seems to relax at seeing they're both okay. "H-Hey- glad you two aren't hurt-" He then makes a face and his eyes glow with hatred as he looks down at the power that's taken over his brother. "Right... that bitch. Okay- lemme see what I can do!"
{Shhh. Shhhh.} The voice hisses in Alt's mind, like the comforting sound of rain falling. {Don't worry. You don't have to worry about anything. Shhh. Let me take care of this.}
Alt's eyes glaze over more as the voice of his friend comforts him. His hand falls back down and he lays limply on the ground, head lolling to look out past Bro. Nothing but the sound of rain blanking his mind, like what he would listen to in his headphones when sound was too much. His mind is calm and still- Even though his body is panting and shaking and trembling- he can't feel it at all.
"No No! fuck- Anti! C'mon lil bro, stay with me!" Chase whispers desperately, trying to shake Alt's shoulders.
Then, Chase hears something in his mind, too. {Oh? So where were you when your brother appeared right outside my house? Where? Why weren't you there with him? You don't care, I see. You're right not to. He doesn't care about you. He barely knows you, really, he wouldn't give two shits if you just died.}
Bro winces as the voice slithers into his head. He closes his eyes and then growls out, "No shut up! I do care- we know each other better than anyone! You're the one who doesn't care- or you wouldn't be running him ragged!"
He shakes Alt more, pleading, "Alt c'mon! Wake up!"
"Shit," Marvin curses, watching Chase and Alt. He has all his cards gathered, now he just needs to find the right ones! "H-hang on, you two! Jems, can you--I-I dunnae, help t'em?"
Distorter doesn't respond to Chase, instead continuing to speak to Alt. {Look, Anti... it's Magnificent. He's right in front of you. It's time to show him how you really feel. You're so much stronger than him, right? I believe you are.}
Alt's eyes narrow and flood with green and blue magic as Distorter makes him see Magnificent in front of him. His shoulders start to glitch, electricity building up around him. He starts to latch back onto Chase- then his arm is grabbed and-
JJ looks Alt. He doesn't have much magic left right now, but he can try. Maybe... He steps forward, up next to Chase, and grabs Alt's arm. His eyes flare blue, and frost suddenly flares from the point of contact, flashing sudden cold through Alt's system. It won't work if he's too deep in, but maybe...
It's like the gray is blown away by an icy chill, startling Alt back into his own mind with a painful jolt. He gasps, back arching as the connection breaks. He slumps back towards the floor and dazedly looks back and forth between Bro and Jameson. "..h..how did I...?" He then winces and curls his face into the ground, groaning softly. "F-Fuck..! My head...!"
Bro slumps with relief and then lifts Alt up and crushes him in a hug. "Oh thank fucking christ! God... god.... you fucking scared me Alt..." He buries his face in his brother's shoulders for a bit before letting go and helping to sit against the floor. Alt just dazedly lets him, trying to take everything in.
JJ lets go of Alt, slumping in relief. He was so glad that worked. He was so worried... But it was fine. It was all fine. It was Distorter, he explains to Alt. You remember him, right? Do you... know where you are right now, Alt? And is there... anything you need?
"I...I'm..." Alt swallows shakily and goes to hold his arms and curls up on himself. It was really hard to piece things together- but... he knows these guys. JJ and Marvin... this must be... their world. Once he thinks this though, he remembers how they got here and he gasps, looking around at the others in panic. "M-Mag-! Magnificent! He's here- he's...! He's trying to get to other universes- and-!" He then takes in the slight claw marks on Jameson's arm and he looks back at him with a pale face. "... shit- did he already...?"
"Wait what?? He already got you??" Bro asks, looking at JJ with worry. "Fuck! I flew so fast to try to stop that! Damn that slippery cat goddd im gonna skin him one of these days!"
JJ looks down at his own arm. Right... the marks. He could feel the effects, but he forgot they were visible. I'm fine, he reassured them. He did... somehow drain some of my magic, but... I'll recover with enough time and rest.
"They're righ', t'ough," Marvin says from the doorway. "We need t'stop him before that bastard does anyt'ing too big to recover from. If you're goin' to skin him, tell me so I can join." He chuckled.
Well... Jameson pauses thoughtfully. If he was trying to get to other universes, he succeeded. I don't know what we're going to stop him from now.
"Uh, how 'bout we stop him from murderin' us? Or from whatever he did to you! Or from doin' all t'at..." Marvin waves his hands around his head. "All t'at shit."
JJ chuckled, then turned serious again. You're right. I suppose I'm just a bit tired. This was a lot. He turns to Alt and Chase. Our house is warded against all sorts of nonhuman intruders. Distorter can't get in, but Magnificent might be able to. We'll be safe... briefly. Do you know of anyone else from your universe who could be here? Or is it just you two and him?
"It's just us this time," Bro sighs, "He got the jump on Alt and made him use this- weird doorway thingy! He almost got away with just Alt- god that would have been bad..."
Alt shudders and holds himself tightly, "If i was drained doing the spell... then Mag probably was too... which is why he tried to find the nearest source of magic. Then he'd... god... I... I don't know... h-he made puppets of you all once but- not even as himself... That was Distorter too... I dunno if he'd stick around for that though... and i... i dont think he'd kill you all... not yet at least. He... He likes making people useful to him. Or keeping trophies..." He grips tighter on his arms, digging his nails in. "h-he might just be trying to get to the next universe somehow... since he's experienced this one... in a way." The glitch hates that he's been around Mag long enough to know his thought pattern but... he did work with him for a long time.
Bro makes a face as he thinks and then perks up, "Oh! Yeah! I need to message the others! They were gonna be driving here! Then they uh- they mentioned someplace we can try to see might have something to help- somewhere callleedd ah fuck what was it- its like Sclera!" He scrunches his face and looks up to think. "...what do you call the colored part of your eye?"
"Iris-" Alt mutters.
"Iris! Yeah that was it!" Bro whips out his phone and sends a text to Anti. I found JJ and Alt! Mag got to JJ but hes okay- and Alt was affected by Distorter... anyways! JJ and Marvin were here so i guess we're in their house :)
Marvin and JJ stiffen. JJ looks back at him. Do you think IRIS could help?
"I... s'ppose," Marvin mutters, shuffling his card deck. "Probably. Yes. They... like t'is sort of stuff. Time and space and all t'at. So the question is jus'... which one of their places we go to t'find somet'ing helpful."
I don't think either of us are... the most qualified to answer that question, JJ says.
Meanwhile, Chase gets an answering text: Great we're reall close then. Just a few minutes and well be there.
Soon after, JJ and Marvin's phones both ding. They take them out and read the text that Anti just sent THEM.
"They're on th'way," Marvin reports.
JJ nods. Let's all head downstairs and wait for them. He turns and looks at the bookshelves Chase and Alt ran into. He frowns. You've ruined my shelves.
Marvin bursts into laughter. "Is--is t'at really your priority?"
I've spent a couple days organizing them. That one's all...ker-fobbled now.
"Did ye really jus' spell out t'at nonsense word?"
Chase looks back up and then blushes, getting to his feet, "Ah fuck! I'm sorry! I just- acted on instinct! I'm not that tired i could reorganize them if you want!"
Alt glitches to his feet and then shoves Bro towards the door. "Let's focus on the important stuff, Chase- like getting back home and stopping the evil maniac thats skulking through town?"
"...oh yeah-"
Alt shoves him more out the door, "My god you're impossible... did you take your meds today?!"
"'course I did but a lot is happening, Alt!"
Alt rolls his eyes then glitches downstairs.
Marvin giggles. Then he stops. The others couldn't hear the voice he just did. {You know fixing this won't get rid of me. We're stuck together. Embrace it now.} After a second, he shakes off the uneasy feeling and finally stands up, using his cane as support. "Yea, let's all go downstairs. We can settle the IRIS t'ing t'ere when the others arrive."
Alt finds the same space the others put him on earlier and slowly goes to curl up, holding his headphones and hiding his face behind his knees. He never thought he'd be so far away from home without his mask...
Bro watches Alt vaguely then sticks by the others, ready to help if they needed it. He wants to make sure they get down okay first- especially with JJ looking so spent.
JJ notices Chase sticking by. He smiles at him tiredly. Don't worry, I'm not actually mad. It was an emergency. And I understand the, ah, mile-a-minute effect, if you know what I mean.
"We shoul' lock you and Jems and Jackie in an empty room, see how insane you all become," Marvin mutters. "C'mon, Mr. Fantastic." He starts walking down the hallway. A bit slower than usual, but he did run up the stairs. The energy had to come from somewhere.
That's a different superhero, JJ says, following him. A fictional one.
"As far as we know! If other universes are real, perhaps all stories are, too!"
JJ smiles. He glances back at Chase to make sure he's following.
Chase laughs and then hovers over the others as they go down the stairs. “Oh yeah! Jackieboy- the one from our universe- he’s a hugeee comic nerd- gave me an earful once about my name being so close to that guy’s but I didn’t know! I didn’t read comics?? I had like… rugby to play and shit- pints to drink…”
Ah, you were one of those uni people, huh? I don't know why I'm surprised. JJ smiles again. I was a theatre major, which, I'm told, says everything about me and how I acted in uni.
"Imagine goin' to a second'ry school," Marvin says.
You mean a university?
Marvin pauses. "Well, I finished primary school, at least." JJ raises an eyebrow. "Don' give me t'at look, do you know how hard t'at was to do under my circumstances?!"
I'm very proud of you, Marvin. Sincerely.
Bro touches down to the steps once he’s sure the others are fine and then glances back at the living room. He sees his brother all curled up and his heart aches. He slowly makes his way over and sits down next to him. He waits a beat- then opens one arm to Alt’s backside but doesn’t move, waiting to see how Alt would respond.
Alt blinks up at Bro and seems to hesitate. But then he slowly adjusts so he can lay his head on Bro’s shoulder. Chase wraps a light around Alt’s back and the glitch seems to relax some.
“….I hate this.” Alt whispers weakly to Chase, trying to hide the frustrated tears wanting to leak out of his eyes. He scrubs hard at the drying blood on his face.
Chase closes his eyes and leans against Alt’s head. “I know…”
“I mean… im… im glad to see these guys again… just…” Alt shudders and curls up more. “…I know it’s good they’re not here but… I miss the others…”
“Yeah…” Bro sighs. He then presses light lips to his brother’s head, “We’ll figure it out though…”
Alt nods and hides his face against his brother’s shoulder.
Jameson and Marvin join Chase and Alt in the living room, noticing the way the two of them are acting with each other. They exchange looks, then decide not to say or do anything to interrupt the moment. "Won' be long now," Marvin says, going over to sit in his usual chair. "Jus' a few more minutes."
————
Frustratingly for Magnificent, he seems to have appeared in an area with few magicians or otherwise magic people. Sure, the city at large is very magical, but the west and south neighborhoods are odd dry spots. There are occasional empty houses full of spellbooks and the occasional talisman, but great amounts of magic are few... except for Jameson Jackson, of course, lessened as his magical signature is now that he's drained.
The dark magician curses as he comes up short on any other magic sources. Guess it was time to go back to what he knew- that Jameson could still prove useful to him, if he could find where he escaped to. And well- remembering the bonds between his puppet and his friends- where jj was- so would his failure crippled counterpart would be. It would be good to get rid of such weakness.
Flaring his eyes- he tries to locate that faint spark of Jameson’s magic.
It’s hard to find, but it’s there, glowing faintly… in the opposite direction he’s been walking all this time. How ironic.
Magnificent curses to himself- he'd been walking in the complete wrong way! Cheeky little magician... what a rookie mistake.
But as he stands there trying to locate it… he hears a voice. A voice that sounds like it’s coming from right next to him. “I knew I’d see you eventually.”
Mag freezes hearing that voice and whirls around, hurtling magic towards the voice. "You-!"
The attack misses, because Distorter is not at all where his voice was coming from. Now there’s laughter on Magnificent’s other side. Distorter is sitting on a house’s doorstep, watching casually. “Last time we met because of an accident, but not this time. You came here on purpose, right?” He stands up, head tilting to the side. “Couldn’t make it back home so you decided to try somewhere new? Hoping you wouldn’t fail as much here?”
Magnificent bares his teeth for a second but then stands up taller and tries to stay composed. He smirks, “A being like you couldn’t possibly understand my ambitions. You’re stuck as this- dead thing. But, I’m pushing past my limits. You’re just a speck in the grand scheme of things, cadaver.”
"It's funny how you think you're more than that. Cute, even." Distorter puts a hand on his cheek, a silent gesture of "awww." "You'll die too one day. There's no magic to stave that off forever. And even if you somehow find something that does, do you think it will change your core? Strip away my powers, I'm just a dead guy. Strip away yours and you're just a man with abandonment issues and a mean dad. There's a million of those."
Magnificent tries to keep his expression schooled, even as the demon claws at his inner most fears, his deepest feelings he's long tried to supress. He'd never admit it but yes- He's afraid to die. But, this was to that end. However, the last comments ignite rage in the mad magician as he lashes out with a wild yell and tries to grab where he sees Distorter.
Distorter doesn't move as Mag lunges at him, not even as his claws dig into his flesh. "Looks like I struck a nerve there~!" he sings. Still smiling. Always smiling.
Magnificent yells more and slams the cadaver into the ground, trying to choke him as his eyes light up with power. "Shut up! Don't you dare- dare compare me to any other lowly human! I am more- I am MAGNIFICENT!" He digs his claws in tighter and snarls, "I will not be judged by a being so consumed by sadness for a life that was obviously as meaningless as your very existence."
Distorter's grin widens. He doesn't breathe so the choking isn't bothering him, but he does need air to talk and so can't respond. Instead he reaches up, blackened nails scraping the edge of Magnificent's mask... and all of a sudden he doesn't look like himself anymore. He looks like Jackie--the one Magnificent remembers.
Magnificent's eyes widen in shock. It's instinctual- he lets go of Distorter and backs up, looking at him in confusion. But, then he snarls and teleports back, lighting his hands on fire to try to seem threatening. "No-! No I- I won't fall for your tricks, demon!"
Laughing, Distorter sits up, then stands. The movement is just a bit too fast to be natural. “It’s not a trick,” he says. “It’s a distraction.” And then he attacks—not physically. Mentally, psychic claws digging for a grip in Mag’s mind.
Magnificent looks caught off guard again then yells out as a powerful force is slammed onto his mind. He cries out and falls to his knees, gripping at his skull. Green light tries to ignite in his good eye, trying to push back the force. "N-No! You- You can't...!"
“I can’t? Then how am I doing it?” Distorter steps up to him, leaning down so their eyes are level. “Our goals aren’t really that different you know. And this is my home. It’d be so much easier if you let me show you the way.”
Mag meets distorter's eyes with hatred, snarling. "You- You overpowered when I was weak before- I-! I won't be bested by you ag-" He then pauses, the mental load slamming more against his mind as Distorter's logic tries to worm itself in. To Magnificent though, it feels like he's letting the wheels turn himself, figuring out a plan. Would it be so bad... to team up? They almost brought down their enemies together last time, but Magnificent hardly remembered himself. "... you... don't want to help me-" The dark magician breathes, though he seems unsure of that statement, narrowing his eyes at the other villain.
"Why wouldn't I want to? I don't hate you." Distorter's smile hides the half-lie. He does mildly dislike the dark magician, but he was so useful that he was willing to put up with it. "And helping you would help me, too. We could do so much together."
Magnificent's eyes are starting to slip- the pressure on his head becoming too much. Why- fight it though?
Because he didn't need anyone else! He was powerful enough on his own- he didn't need help!
Are you really going to look a gift horse in the mouth, sorcerer? You're in a foreign world- already weakened. Take what you can get.
Mag's furious expression starts to fall, face slacking. His claws loosen from his skull as he better looks Distorter in the eyes. "...we could... could do so much...together."
"Exactly." Distorter offers a hand to help pull Magnificent up. "I know where they are now, but I don't think they'll stay there for long. Your cub and that hero want to get back to their world soon, and the others have an idea to help them. We need to hurry."
For a fraction of a second, Mag hesitates. But then he lets himself get helped up and nods, blood welling up in one of his eyes. "Alright. Show me."
Distorter's grin widens. "I think I know where they're going. We can intercept them, take them off guard. Follow me."
