i think that wicked the book used the oz setting as a political critique, sort of in the way that gulliver's travels is a political critique, and it isn't overly interested in the wizard of oz, the movie. it has references, it makes nods and incorporates elements, but it's not interested in nostalgia. it's more interested in deconstructing nostalgia. wicked the musical and movie are VERY interested in the wizard of oz, the movie. even the moment of dorothy and the squad skipping down the yellow brick road at the beginning. insofar as they're a comment on nostalgia, they temper critique with an enthusiasm for the source material and disneylike love of whimsy. imo, musical wicked wants oz to be lovingly recognizable; book wicked wants oz to be grimly recognizable.

i probably fall much closer to the path of the book, but i am also more closely aligned vision-wise with two other properties, those being return to oz and nbc's emerald city. i had a blog for an emerald city character for several years. my thoughts on this are somewhat half baked, but imo, both of these properties are interested in turning the ozian world more gothic and frightening than grimy and christopher nolanlike (the book, in reference to e.g. batman begins which seeks to ground what is ultimately a fairy tale in reality), or whimsical and spectacular (the musical and movie--yes the people of oz are critiqued, but the setting itself is pure whimsy).

i think that return to oz and emerald city are also interested in, very very very loosely and broadly, gender and power dynamics between girls/women and the world around them, more so than either version of wicked. the book's criticism of gender and gendered power are more incidental to the whole overarching political theme. that is why, although she is not yet featured much here or on @verdoubt which i still have to set up 😭😭😭, dorothy is a huge player in the story im trying to tell. the same goes for oscar, whose role in the overall story loosely parallels the treatment of vincent d'onofrio's wizard in emerald city, but who I hope is much better thought out.

They do still occasionally include WIR characters in games and books, and they regularly get pins (user sparklermun showcases the latter every November and it's great to see!) but Disney has always been averse to marketing this movie from the very start for whatever reason. I remember reading that they were unprepared for its success and didn't bother to take advantage of that by making more merchandise beyond the first wave of WIR stuff in late 2012.

At this point I think the company is too cowardly to admit that the franchise has potential because it could lead them into un-Disneylike territory (lack of mentioning Turbo, specific exclusion of Tamora from a lot of stuff the rest of the Core Four gets because she's probably Too Scary for plushies and whatnot in their eyes, etc). With the executive meddling on RBTI and driving off Rich Moore - even after the creative freedom he got for WIR making it into a great movie! - it does seem deliberate on the company's part, unless they're just sitting on the franchise to figure out what to do with it in the far future.

As someone who is very much not a Disney fan and only likes a small handful of individual things they've been involved with, I really wish their great properties like this could be repossessed to someone who could handle them better.

TO ADD ON TO YOUR WBTI RANT. It absolutely obliterated our chances at a third movie, a show, pretty much any extra WIR content FOREVER. On top of just being a generally awful film, it destroyed future worldbuilding by established a weird, bastardized canon that disney couldn't/wouldn't retcon or otherwise "take back" to return to and build on the first film's lore/setting. Ever since it dropped, disney has straight up abandoned the IP. It makes me so mad 😡

The only thing Theoretically possible is if they made a series of “villain origin stories” shorts for a bunch of IPs and they eventually got to Wreck-it Ralph :]c

In that there’s still some potential to expand upon the arcade. I want to know how Turbo took over Sugar Rush, and did people like him before Roadblasters or was he a jerk? I’m also really curious about his interactions with Felix and Ralph because they were basically Cabinet Neighbors

But at the rate Disney is going. My hopes are Not very high. Also Turbo is Not very marketable LOL one time he was redesigned to look less scary in a WIR kids book forever ago. And there he looks like some weird AI-generated Minecraft chicken (I have a feeling they Don’t Like Him.)

It's funny, in my crossover fanfics I have made Eternia more nuanced then say classic He-Man in terms of trying to make 3 dimensional character but also more over the top as well.

Like I am down right tempted to have Eternia be a place where Musical numbers just seem to happen when the story require it.

So then I can have moments like

Catra: Oh whoop dee do Mr Overlord of Evil, you won big whoop, you gonna sing about

Skeletor: .... (Begin to sing a Disneylike Villain song)

I decided instead of making He-Man more like She-Ra I wanted to show the contrast between Eternian and Etherian culture. Yet both existing in the same universe.

Ever since I've watched Galavant, I've kind of wanted a modern She-Ra version of Galavant. Or, at least, Hordak and Catra doing a bombastic Disney-style villain-song duet. And can you imagine Horde Prime doing a villain song? Bonus points to anyone who can make some kind of She-Ra or old school MotU version of "Be Prepared" from The Lion King. That one's my favorite. (Ah, great, I'm imagining Horde Prime leading and all of these clones going "Our teeth and ambitions are bared!")

I’ve discovered a Merrie Melody that I’ve never seen before, featuring what looks like a The Wise Little Hen-esque precursor to the modern weasel model, despite being Warner Bros. I thought you guys might appreciate it; it’s curious to see a Disneylike weasel with a tail.

(And I know as far as old cartoons go, rubberhose black-and-white cartoons are by far the more popular art style, but I am a fan of the stretchy style cartoons had after technicolor was introduced but before the mid-forties)
