Do you guys subscribe to the theory that (at least, starting in NuWho) the Doctor can, somewhat, subconsciously control his regenerations?

Like, of course, 8 wanted to be a warrior, so he became the War Doctor (I know that he drank a potion for that, but that might’ve just been lemonade according to the Target Novelization).

War wanted to be the hero, to earn the title, the Doctor, again, so he became 9.

9 wanted to be someone who was the perfect partner to Rose (human), so he became 10.

10, in his vanity, wanted his final regeneration to be young, so he became 11.

11, after all the heartache, wanted to be more distant (and also what they said in series 8), so he became 12.

12 wanted a kind, fresh start, so he became 13.

13 wanted to open up to someone, so she became 14.

14 wanted time to heal, so he split off 15.

This is not an original theory, and I'm not even saying that I buy into it fully it, but it's interesting. It would be interesting if the Doctor had a tiny bit of control over their regeneration (Romana did, somehow) and most of the time his wants either backfire or only half work.

Certainly this isn't an uncommon theory, but I think Mrs. Flood is the Master. I think she seems a little too villain-y to be Susan. But also-- Missy was one of the most popular fan favorite New Who characters, and versions of the Master. And Mrs. Flood's scenes so far have been really reminiscent of the early teasing of Missy as a character when everyone was like "WHO IS SHE??" With this being Disney rebranding of Doctor Who as a "new era," Ruby being somewhat similar to Rose, and Rogue being an obvious replacement for Jack Harkness, in addition to bringing back a bunch of classic who characters and villains, it seems like they are trying to puzzle together some of the best most popular pieces of former eras, so introducing a new version of The Master/Missy would make perfect sense. I reckon even if she isn't actually the Master, she will still play a very similar narrative role to what Missy did. So far she definitely does.

EDIT: Clara is also a distinct possibility especially since her saying "clever boy" but I firmly refuse to believe that it's Clara simply because that is the worst possible option. Also- Missy and Clara were around at the same time so the Master could've easily picked up that phrase teasingly.

Having mixed feelings about the new episodes!

Because I absolutely do want to have fun and enjoy and just go on the ride – and I loved the campiness of The Giggle (spice up your life?? hello???) and Jinx was delicious in The Devil's Chord – but I am just having issues with the writing I think?

I haven't found all the words, but I think a lot of it just doesn't feel EARNED yet. Like, instead of having emotional dialogue that relates to our characters' development it feel kinda inspirational-poster-on-the-wall to show The Doctor Is Actually Emotionally Mature Now So You Better Love Yourself. And I know how much Ncuti can do!!

I think I'm just missing some depth maybe? Because Doctor Who IS campy and IS over the top weird the-worst-visual-and-special-effects-you've-ever-seen (sometimes I wonder how the episode where plastic Mickey says pa pa pizza is what hooked me) but it's also heartbreaking and loss and loneliness and hope. I once saw a video a where Peter Capaldi said it's fundamentally a show about death, because the main character keeps dying. Life, death, change, companionship, humanity.

I know I'm just rambling and this became way longer than intended but just! Ambivalence!!

Side note: Other than I think the songs so far aren't really my thing (again I think they could be written better idk hire Rachel Bloom or smth) I feel like the sound engineering is too clean kind of? Like it's too polished so it totally takes me out of the narrative because it's so clearly studio recorded and possibly slightly corrected in pitch

Doctor Who: Added thoughts to my last post

Something I just realized kind of ironic about the fact this era taking away the bookended TARDIS scenes is if they did still have them it would seamlessly transition into the Next Time section that starts with, you know, the TARDIS flying in the vortex.

Now it just feels so sudden, as soon as The Doctor and Ruby leave the screen "Cue Next Time now! We can't have them be in anyplace other than the episode's specific location!"

One possible theory I just thought of:

Russell admitted that the original idea for the intro was to have The Doctor and Companion waving out of the TARDIS and Moffat told him to take it out.

What if he had written the entire season with that in mind, thinking "Oh, the audience is going to see them in the intro so an opening scene in the TARDIS would be redundant."? Then at Moffat's suggestion to take it out, it was too late in the process to go back and add in more scenes. Considering it got far enough in the process for both David and Catherine & Ncuti and Millie to film for that sequence, I think it's plausible.
