I need to scream about the brilliant thematic juxtaposition between hbomberguy’s “ROBLOX_OOF.mp3” and Kevin Perjurer/Defunctland’s “Disney Channel’s Theme: A History Mystery”, which came out within 3 days of each other in November 2022 and both concern artistic credit and legacy. Here they are linked for those who haven’t watched one or both:
youtube
youtube
While both are very different stylistically (with hbomberguy maintaining his signature edge of unhinged video essayist humor while Defunctland is produced in a more traditional documentary style), they are both very well made with a strong narrative through-line— something I consider to be very important in a good documentary. They also have strikingly similar subject matter, but very different “protagonists”, so to speak.
Tommy Tallarico, the center of hbomberguy’s doc, is a well-known and successful video game composer who, over the course of the video, is revealed to be a grifter and seemingly compulsive liar. Perjurer’s doc, by contrast, spends most of its runtime trying to uncover the composer behind Disney Channel’s well known auditory channel theme; eventually this is revealed to be Alex Lasarenko, a composer who wrote a lot of music for brands and sadly passed away in 2020 without much fame to his name. While Lasarenko was obviously unable to be interviewed for the documentary, Perjurer manages to get into contact with many of his collaborators and they have nothing but nice things to say about him. Contrast this with Tallarico, who is far more successful than Lasarenko, but is also a total dick who takes credit for the work of those who work under him (among many many other issues).
To me, the idea at the center of these docs is artistic legacy. When you die, what will you be remembered for? What art that you have created is inherently connected to you as a person? And, does it matter if those who personally know you actually like you as long as your art is loved? Is it better to be famous and despised or unknown and beloved? They also both have commentary to make on media preservation, with Perjurer’s doc being made possible through the tireless work of online archivists who catalog tv bumpers and interstitial content, while hbomberguy’s doc shows how Tallarico actively seeks to rewrite history in service of his own fame.
Basically, I love YouTube documentaries and there were a ton of great ones made in 2022.

It’s A Laugh Productions, Disney Channel Original Movies & Disney Television Animation get ready with Cake with a special CHIBI TINY TALES short to kick-off Disney Channel’s 40th Anniversary. 🧁🎂🎈
The short features nods to different eras of branding on Disney Channel’s history on the background as well music nods of the bumpers songs in the entire score of the short.

Since you've reviewed a handful of cartoons from the 80s, how would you feel about reviewing cartoons from the 70s?
What do you think are the golden, sliver and bronze ages of Cartoon Network and Disney TVA based on the agreed-upon fan criteria you alluded to in your Nicktoons golden age video essay?
And yeah, I agree. Nick's eras are more or less divided by historical context and Nick's eventual leaning towards their biggest franchises than the superficiality of CN's and DTVA's eras.
The tricky thing about the 70s is that there’s barely anything of note from that decade. (Animation wise. Bloody good time for music and film.) Fat Albert, School House Rock! and Wait Till Your Father Gets Home are all I can think of that would be worth full videos. The only one of those I’ve seriously considered is Fat Albert, but the attitude surrounding that show has largely been dark and ironic since Bill Cosby got outed, so how honest of a look could it be?
As for the other question, those discussions could be worth their own videos. But if I never get around to videos on them, I’d say the Disney Afternoon, One Saturday Morning and Disney Channel era are Disney’s gold, silver and bronze ages respectively. The Disney Afternoon is where our perception of Disney Television Animation was crystalised, and the others are different ages that didn’t neccessarily produce worse shows.
For Cartoon Network, I’m going by bumper history and personal preference when I say the Powerhouse era is the golden age. I haven’t seen enough of the Check It era to think of it if as a silver or bronze age, so in my mind, it’s currently interchangeable with the City era.

Welcome back to the Zeether!
Welcome to the Zoog Disney Archive Project! My aim here is to catalogue all of the information, artwork, etc. relating to the Zoog Disney programming block (specifically the Zoogs themselves) that I've uncovered in the past nine months of researching. (An endeavor started thanks to Defunctland's incredible documentary about the Disney Channel theme song) I plan to update this page sporadically with as much of what I've found as I can share here and anything I come across in the future. Enjoy!
Also check out the Zoog Archive Neocities page!

Also under the cut!
6: A song that makes you want to dance
we've been going through a fall out boy phase the past couple days LMAO. Not the Best song on the album imo [that would be Novacaine!] but this one's Soooo high energy & feels like u Gotta dance 2 it tbh!! -E-Chem
12: A song from your preteen years
OH LORD DO WE HAVE MEMORIES OF OUR PRETEEN YEARS. UHHHHH. HOLD ON DIWIAKASKXKCJFJ
OK SO THIS ONE'S LIKE IMPORTANT TO US TOO BSJSHSJXXJDKDJ we grew up watching Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and... A couple kiiiinda obscure-ish channels but not rly cuz they're linked to Nick & CN. Our fave channel was Boomerang, we had that shit on literallyyyyy almost 24/7. Only time we'd change it was to watch Nick GAS [Rip 😔] this song played during one of their bumpers for the old cartoon Jabberjaw. What's funny is Jabberjaw never fuckin aired when they'd play that bumper!! Like. It was just not apart of the lineup ever???? There'd be references to it in their other bumpers [along w other older Hanna-Barbera cartoons that also Never Aired back then, or did once in a blue moon] and we always found that weird, but. Anyways! Legit still one of our fave childhood songs it's so fun JFJDDJFJF
23: A song that you think everybody should listen to
Hmm... We have plenty of songs that remind us of our source, and canon, and our relationship/s to Harry, but this is one that comes to mind first. I'd say people should listen to it because it's also kinda important to us [there is a theme here I see lol] but also generally because it's good, personal associations aside!
That does remind me actually. We need to make Harry a playlist ASAP. -Empathy
24: A song by a band you wish were still together
youtube
Okay so. I am deranged about this song. It is My Song. It describes me as a Person. But besides that holY SHIT!!!!! THE UNICORNS WERE SO GOOD!!!!! Their music was so Sound and this song is so Deranged honorary I Love It . Very violent very Visceral [and Viscera] [and loud] [and discordant] [and—]
SPEAKING OF THE UNICORNS!!!!!!!! It was a tie between that one and this one:
Both very very good both very very brain scritchy!!!! Love love Love this band so much -Inland

(I know a lot of people wouldn't agree with the last part, but still it is fascinating. Personally not really a fan of the first movie either, so I agree with a lot of the post)
Here are some more things that are reused, or can be speculated to be:
Tinker Bell:
-The background characters we see in the movie don't maych the visual style of the rest of the movie. Pause the movie at any time, and we see many of the characters have bigger eyes and are in a completely different style
-London enviorments left over from the original production, including the gardens where spring is brought to winter
-During the scene of preperations for Spring, we see one of the preprations is the original design for Rosetta's house
-In the "Magical Guide to Pixie Hollow" DVD short, this book prop is used. It is speculated to be from the original draft. I think the original name was also called "Magical Guide"
Tumblr media
-The DVD guide shorts in general use book characters as backgrounders and fit them in to the new story
-Compare the deleted scene "Fairies Go to the Mainland" to the scene where Tinker Bell and friends brings spring, some shots are reused
-Various concepts and characters from the books are brought over from the guide, primarily In The Realm of Never Fairies:
Dust keepers
Sprinting thistles and living plants (Iris's journal)
Facts about fairy life in DVD shorts
Vidia's sarcasm (sweetie- sweetheart)
Arrival garments (probable for it to not be in the original script)
No two fairy wings are alike
Found objects on Never Land's shores (Lost things)
Hawks are dangerous
Scout talents
Can't fly with wings wet (very probable for it to really NOT be in original script, they didn't seem to need dust to fly)
Compare the redesigned Pixie Dust Tree to the Home Tree design. Some shots have some details not removed, such as the blue house in the bottom right corner (Rani's house)
-In the opening of the movie, we see some fairies sleeping in flowers, making them glow. The original version had the sunflower meadow where light fairies tended to live likely named as "Morning Glow Meadow" If we use the original picture of it as reference to the sunflower meadow, it's basically the same
-During the tour of Pixie Hollow we see some water talents in a small pond area. This is suspected to be the original water talent area
-Fairy Mary was in the original draft, with a slightly different role in the story as a teacher
-Look at the room where the ministers worry about the seasons, and compare it to the early trailers and deleeted scenes with the interior of the Pixie Dust tree
-Ballet music box (in concept arts, it was pink and was a prop in the original movie)
-The Pixie Dust well (where they get their ration)
-Perhaps the concepts of musical talents, who preform a concert?
-In Vidia's house, we see what was originally Tinker Bell's mirror
-Compare the teaser trailer from 2007 to the opening shot of the film, it contains a version of To The Fairies We Draw Near as well as several (6 to be exact) dandelions as mentioned earlier. Also compared the garden in the trailer, to the one used in the final film.
-The wand transitions (ending and DVD menu) seem to use the original character model for Tinker Bell
-The original Pixie Preview shorts use the older character models, the shorts are also loosely connected to the "changing talents" segment. Disney Channel's bumpers also used the original models for the characters
-Visit a Disney park, and the characters are often using the original designs from the movie- not the final ones in the film. Some packaging even has the old title design for "Tinker Bell"
-Vidia lives in a sour plum tree like the books
-When she gives the box to Wendy, she wipes away the condensation of the window and this is similar to an early scene of Tinker Bell that we see in the trailer of her looking in the window
Lost Treasure
-We see during the preperations of the Autumn revelry the mention of light crystals for the fireworks and Fawn is training small purple butterflies. Light Crystals are briefly mentioned in that minigame. (Discovering Pixie Hollow) In the 2008 teaser, when everyone says Tinker Bell's name- there's a shot of Rosetta in the original version with small purple butterflies behind her. Purple butterfiles also help Tinker Bell
-Viola's design seems to be closer in style to the original version with the features they decided to give her
-The design of the tapestry has the same artistic influence of the original Pixie Hollow design
-Exterior of Fairy Tale Theatre has the same branches of the fairy school
-The Pixie Dust mill is introduced in this film for the first time, and was a central location in the books
-The balloon carrier seems to take influence from Gail Carson Levine's carrier
-Recolored and reused models
-Based of Tink North of Never Land
-There's also the possiblity of reused assets (props etc) anywhere in the film, especially when she's traveling and it was so close in development to the original Tinker Bell
-The fairy guide short reuses the story of Vidia's feather theft to theft of blue dust.
Great Fairy Rescue
-Reused models and scenes from London, also possible in Fairy Camp
-Possible inside joke with the "water fairy has blue skin" thing, as there's a blue fairy by Mark Cote
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Lizzy wears a flower crown
-Mention of arrival garments in DVD short and the "arrival garment can be made of anything" being a very light piece of canon from this short (it's practically untrue)
Secret of the Wings
-The fairy language used on one of the snowflakes is speculated to be reused from a written language in the original script
-The opening shot seems to reference a few other illustrations, including the cover of In The Realm
Legend of the Neverbeast
-We see a map that seems to reference an older Pixie Hollow map, based on the design of the tree and comparing it to the one in "The Art of Judith Holmes Clarke"
-Fawn's house seems to be modeled after her original house design, a pinecone house- but closer to the ground and covered in more foilage. Making it different from the original
-In a cut scene, we see the houses of the characters that were made for the original film including the infamous "water slide" lotus- just the door though
-Reused models from previous films
Decided to rewatch Tinker Bell (2008) to see what short cuts they took when dismantling Ring of Belief (ROB). So here are some of them. Tumblr won’t let me add more than 10 images so this isn’t even all of them.
So first off the little dandelion seed things are reused from ROB.
The barrage boat where Hook captures Tink and Silvermist in with Peter and the lost boys, makes an appearance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh also George and Mary are in the film too for some reason in the background for like 3 seconds. They are like the only background people in the film, like WHY- waste of models imo but I think they were from the ROB draft so what can you do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hooks ship is also just chilling there.
Tumblr media
I’m thinking this tinker bell model they used for one scene is also from ROB because her wings are very tiny, and we know newborn fairies were a thing (they still come from a child’s laugh but they’re like baby’s/younger, kind of like how everyone could tell Prilla was the youngest fairy in the Disney fairies books when she arrived because of her wing size and features) because of the flash game and young fairy concept art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes I’m sure the concept art is fairies look at their ears and their dresses are made out of flowers.
I’m not sorry but Terence is just Peter Pan’s Ring of Belief Model with a tik tok filter slapped on it and a side identity theft.
Tumblr media
They had a remaining budget of like 3$ and since Lasseter cut Peter from the film he was just extra so my guess is they reused him to make Terence, which is why Terence’s face is different from the books. Now don’t go hitting me with the “but all of tinks friends look different and they were in the books too”. Well duh, that was intentional, they were created in marketing, they were taken and made specifically for the film, Gail had no involvement with them. They were just added in later with corresponding designs to promote the films later on. That’s also why we never got tinks book friends in the movies because they were created for the books, they weren’t meant to be “movie marketable”.
Another case of identity theft. Like come on. They dismantled Victoria and turned her into Wendy. Wendy shouldn’t even been in this film because of the last line from Peter Pan where Wendy’s dad, George, says he’s been to never land before. That isn’t possible here because Peter isn’t even in Never Land yet, Tink was just born and Wendy exists. Would make more sense if they used Victoria instead and made her like Wendy’s grandmother.
Tumblr media
Over all the Tinker Bell films we got feel like their own bad timeline. They threw almost everything out from the books in a way and called it a day. ROB was at least consistent with the books lore and timeline. We had the purple pixie dust tree, we had the ring of belief, we had mother dove references, we even could have had the book fairies at one point. Disappointed with the Tinker Bell films rn smh. This movie is a 4/10 at best and I’m mad at it rn because it’s just stolen scraps glued together with an Elmer’s glue stick.

It's the end of the year. And I never could've predicted some of the twists and turns 2022 would bring. I'm both very grateful and very exhausted. Here are my December Favorites!
DefunctTV: After discovering the Disney Theme documentary, I watched many other Defunctland videos from the DefunctTV series. It's so interesting to see these TV shows that live so vaguely in my memory from very young childhood again.
Lost Media: This also goes along with my obsession with old commercials and TV shows. I used to record a ton of stuff on VHS tapes as a child/teenager. A decent portion of which I still have. (Though I wish I'd kept all of it now. 🙁) After learning about the search for lost media from TV shows and bumpers, I really want to go through my collection to see if I can find anything meaningful to share.
Summer I Turned Pretty: Yes, I know. It's winter here, but I am just now finishing Season 1 of this summer series. It's been a chaotic year, okay? But the speed at which I watched this series has no bearing on how much I enjoyed it. I absolutely loved this show, and I'm looking forward to Season 2.
New Computer: In a surprise turn of events, I had to get a new computer this month. I was quite anxious about this, as I was upgrading from Windows 7 to 11. A big jump. 😬 But this gaming computer (I've lovingly named Chaz) is very fast and powerful. It's got gorgeous rainbow lights. Runs some games I wasn't able to on my previous computers. (Which lead to some fun escape room playing with a friend.) And most importantly, it runs Sims 2! Really, really well. 🥰 Sometimes detours lead you in the right direction.
Bathaniel Nandy: I never knew there were so many interesting and intricate Nintendo rom hacks out there, and I'm loving this channel spotlighting them!
Music Favs: Timekeeper (Lucy Schwartz), Slide (Rosi Golan), Cry Wolf (Luna Shadows), No Room in Frame (Death Cab for Cutie), Don't Regret (t.A.T.u.), Salt Skin (Ellie Goulding).

in the latest Defunctland documentary Kevin Perjurer tries to figure out who wrote the four-note Disney Channel "theme" that played in all of their jingles from 2002 onward, and he does eventually get an answer and it's extremely touching, but then Kevin says that In the end, the production of the work is only half of the process, and maybe all that matters is someone, somewhere, got something from whatever you created. And in the case of the Disney Channel mnemonic, that is indisputable. In the minds of thousands if not millions of people, this music evokes feelings and memories often long lost, and this is not just a comment on the Disney Channel mnemonic but the conclusion of Kevin's self-reflection on whether he makes "real" art or is a "true" documentary filmmaker or not because of how difficult it is to feel legitimate as a "content creator" or a "youtuber." and i am crying real tears from this documentary because by the end of it i had finally realized that i recognized almost every single disney channel bumper and promo and inter that he used for footage because my sister watched a lot of disney channel from that era when she was 5-10 years old, and i remember this footage because i watched her watch it, and i suddenly remembered this part of my childhood more vividly than i thought that i ever would or could remember it again. and i realized that i am someone somewhere getting something from what kevin perjurer has created. and not just "something" but something that i thought that i had lost and would never get back

what is defunctland? you’ve probably explained it before sorry but i still don’t know lol
one of the fucking youtube channels Ever. basically it’s a series that goes into defunct theme park rides (hence the name) but every so often there’s other documentaries and series about other things on the channel. the newest one is an incredible look into legacy, art, nostalgia, and the power of music via the question “who wrote the disney channel bumper music” like it’s genuinely insane

While crashbox is clearly my Forte, early 2000s HBO family shows were truly something special. For all those kids that didn't get cartoon network or Nickelodeon or Disney channel we were left with HBO Family (or Sprout, which is another rant entirely) and the channel bumpers were so weirdly memorable and quotable and the vibes of the shows were so weird and specific.. It was wonderful
So yeah, this may be a crashbox blog but shout out to Little Curious, Storybook Musical, Kindergarten, Happily Ever After, Harold and the purple crayon, El Perro y El Gato, and a SUPER shout out to the ISpy Show
Anyways, I'm begging you to watch this commercial comp it feels like I'm being dragged through time like I'm back at my grandma's house watching this on her bed I can remember everything

alrighty i’m not the kind of person to tell you what kinda show/videos you should watch, however today i make an exception, with this vidoe
youtube
it’s a 90 minute documentary created by one i my favourite channels on youtube, Defunctland.
And it follows the almost 6 months research deep dive into discovering who created the disney channel theme, you know the
duh duh duh duh
yeahhhhh that one! (you got it)
the story is amazing and it does a great job shinning a light on incredible work of bumper and commercial artist/musicians who’s incredible work often go unnoticed.
know i don’t want to want to spoil much of the story
but if you like learning, have adhd and or autism and have goblin brain for useless information, wanna just learn some really cool behind the scenes info on our collective childhood experiences, wanna gain a new hyperfixation, wanna go into the music world or you just need something to watch then please please watch this video
TLDR: watch video cause i say so … please i promise you won’t regret it … and if you do then just yell at me through my asks

the new defunctland video on the disney channel 4-note mnemonic & disney channel's bumpers is really making me think about one piece's eyecatchers again, mostly about how only 5 seconds of music conveys SO MUCH about each character
luffy's horns are the most similar to the sort of adventurous themes in the OST - like set sail! (not me going "hey wow i know I've heard something like this in the anime" and then checking the full version of this piece again and YEAH i was thinking of the full version.) its adventurous and silly! the trailing notes of the melody feel like you're sailing, letting the music be carried away by the wind!
zoro's theme was once described as "sounding like an army of demons is approaching" and that's never left me. it screams early Zoro, a bounty hunter, trying to look at him through a hot atmosphere
nami's theme is lighter and airier; interestingly, its not overly mischievous. its calm, like a warm afternoon, like nami at her happiest (and then, a tiny rising sequence of notes plucked on soft strings, as if shes creeping around or behind you to steal)
usopp's is so chaotic - i dont know the exact musical term for them, but the arpeggios? runs? they evoke Usopp, well, running! He can't stay still, or hes fighting an enemy and cant take them head on
sanji's eyecatcher music also (memorably) appears in the anime, usually when he does something kinda cool or goofy! i dont know music genres well enough to describe it - is it jazz? blues?? if it were blues itd be a funny pun. either way i think this firmly communicates sanji's position as arguably the most important crew member (he feeds them; if he didnt feed them there wouldnt have been a crew to begin with) through its two strong piano chords & then the deep sturdy horns. but of course, the melody soars and croons a bit at the end, it's his goofiness
chopper has an emphasis on wind instruments, and the way they pull forward and back in the melody is reminiscent of his fear of people & the way he both loves attention and hates it. also it sounds somehow wild to me, like a trail of footprints from an animal
robin's sax (i think that's a sax, I am not a musical expert) is mysterious and mature, it knows what it is and doesnt try to do nearly as many things as, say, usopp or chopper's themes do. but its not closed off, either, the piano dancing upward in the harmony brings in some of robin's levity & humor, even as the melody is sloped downward
franky's theme is interesting to me because it was originally heard in alabasta during Usopp vs Mr 4, but nowadays it's so synonymous with Franky that it's hard to imagine it being used so generally! but the drumroll and the trumpets exude so much energy (the drumroll in particular feeling like a nod to franky's very first introduction) and then the last 3 notes just. SCREAM, in the best way possible. it's such a cool and exciting piece of music, and it's even cooler in its fuller state
brook's theme is haunted, okay! it very much suits his pre-timeskip self, especially the emphasis on orchestral stringed instruments (as opposed to like. an electric guitar or something funky, which might suit his post-soul king character better nowadays). but I like this a lot: the way it opens up frightening, like you're seeing him through the fog, and then it clears up and it's delicately silly. the hints of binks' sake, too
vivi's eyecatcher theme just sounds like a princess, like the kind of disney princess in a white palace from a culture that looks vaguely European in inspiration? it sounds like curtseying and practicing manners; it spirals downward before crawling back up, similar to how nothing seemed to ever go right for vivi through most of the alabasta saga
jinbe finally gets his own eyecatcher and...!! its Luffy's theme. :/ I assume that he'll eventually get an eyecatcher with his own theme, and that this is the music they'll draw from for it - with that in mind, this song has history to it, theres layers and drama. its sincere and determined and wholehearted and I cannot wait to see what they might use from it for an eyecatcher
that's not even to mention the artists who animated these! the OG wanted poster eyecatchers are iconic, and the more modern wanted poster eyecatchers that show important locations to each character are so cool & are an awesome updated take on the OG eyecatchers. My favorite ones, tho, are the spyglass eyecatchers! getting to peek in on the straw hats for a moment and have them interact with the viewer before panning to objects important or characteristic to them is so fun and says so much about each member of the crew and what they're like. they have the most personality of all the eyecatchers to me!
the one piece eyecatchers are so beloved and they have so much care and attention to detail in them. I'm by far a musical expert but I wish I was so that I could accurately point out what's happening in these 5 SECOND LONG(!!!) compositions to convey so much character in such a short period of time
