Haunted Mansion Parlor Blackbeard Changing Portrait

This painting is inspired by the original concept art by Marc Davis. In the Haunted Mansion Parlor, onboard the Disney Treasure (Disney Cruise Line), Blackbeard is the changing portrait. This painting shows Blackbeard with a goblet in his hand, and a treasure chest under his arm. He transforms into a headless pirate ghost while his head peeks out of the treasure chest, and he pours the wine down his empty collar.

So many emotions. I’m rediscovering this marvel of animation (Treasure Planet) that I was obsessed with as a kid. Such an underrated movie, so creative and different.

I had the art book, and it helped inspire me to become an artist. I wish I still had that book, but I gave it away before I moved. It had such amazing visual development and storyboard art.

Anyway, I love Jim, I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I would’ve loved to see the sequel, but alas…

Disney Treasure Rescue Mission

The brand-new Disney cruise ship Disney Treasure has started its career with a heroic act, sailing to the reuse of sailors in distress, with the 144,256 gross ton cruise ship going to the aid of a 50 foot catamaran named Serenity, around 265 miles off the coast of the Bermuda.

Disney Treasure was sailing around 80 miles away from the Serenity, when it sent out a distress call requesting aid, taking on water at a rate that its bilge pump could not contain.

The call was received by the US Coast Guard in North Carolina, who alerted nearby vessels of the situation, with the Disney Treasure picking up the call and diverting to offer assistance. When Disney Treasure arrived on the scene, the large cruise ship sent a lifeboat to rescue the four passengers of the catamaran.  

What makes this story even more remarkable is that Disney Treasure was on her delivery voyage! The ship, which I covered in my recent new cruise ships video, was constructed at the famed Meyer Werft yard in Papenburg Germany, and had only just been handed over to Disney a few weeks ago.

Having completed sea trials near Norway, and provisioning in the Netherlands, the ship was enroute to its new home in Port Canaveral, Florida, having made a call in Funchal before commencing a transatlantic crossing.

Disney Treasure is the latest of the Wish class of cruise ships, and offers 1,250 cabins for 2,500 passengers. With a length of 1,119.2ft, or 341 metres, she is a large ship in both dimensions and internal volume, which as noted is 144,256 gross tons.
