what are katara and azula's favorite things about each other's culture? least favorite?
oooh excellent question!
for katara, her favourite thing about the fire nation is probably their sense of romance. it really pervades nearly everything in the fire nation. (this is all hc i fear BUT) the fire nation has an obsession with passion; be it the physical form in an ever-so-obvious erotic fixation with strong powerful (naked) bodies, the visual language of someone through clothing colour and manner, even violence and death - the fire nation weaves romance through everything, all behind these layers of disicipline and self control. fire nation arts are therefore prolific in every level of society and known to be MELODRAMATIC AS HELL. they adore poetry, theatre, performance, all of it, with romantic tragedy at the core. what im essentially saying is the fire nation is both somehow repressed and obssessed with emotion, and katara resonates with that. she's a romantic at heart herself, and this kind of thing is really attractive to her. of course, it's only once she understands the fire nation that she really falls in love with their ideas of love
her least favourite? where to start! the fire nation's militantism, their bone tight grip on self control, the professional distance expected between everyone who isn't family (and everyone who IS family), the fixation on hierarchy within every level of society. their violent discipline, the dehumanisation of it's leadership figures, their obsession with fighting, death and war, and so on and so on. katara has a big issue with a LOT of the fire nation, though admittedly some of this is her stubborn refusal to understand or adjust her own world image. the fire nation is so unapologetically violent to itself, and as a healer she HATES that. she cant wrap her head around it. just STOP KILLING EACH OTHER.
i think the crux of it is that she simply can't understand how the fire nation expects complete self containment and obedience, all in the pursuit of a rigid sense of order (to avoid the harm that fire causes by it's very nature). it's just... not something she's ever had to contend with. water can't burn a country to the ground with an accidental spark, afterall. from her own cultural background all these rules and complications is a complete anthesis. she thinks its really stupid, honestly
for azula, there's honestly a lot she respects about the water tribes. most of all is their way of life, the tribes are chiefly hunters that harmonise with their environment. in that way, they take up an 'apex' role, and are intimately involved in the cycle of life. birth, living, death, the tribes slip into each role as both a teacher and a student. and i think that kind of simplicity of life impresses azula - the strong and the weak, the community, the easy way everything fits, that everything is used and appreciated. there's no sense of excess, really, to the water tribes and it's deeply satsifying for her. plus, for a princess that's trapped up in a thousand barriers in her own society? i think she's fascinated with the tribes way of allowing oneself to BE oneself. (there's that fire nation romanticism too)
what azula dislikes about the tribes? there's no certainty about them. the community and it's needs are fluid and adaptable. they don't have hierarchy, rules, rigid centuries old protocals to follow. she hates that. they don't have a formal military, they don't have an independant judicial body, they don't have a formal branch of religion. as much as the tribe fits into a harmonisiation with the world, azula wants RULES. she wants ORDER. she wants DISICIPLINE. the water tribe has NONE of that, there's little to no lines in the sand dictating who and what. its so frustrating for her. it's basically just azula not understanding how the water tribes can function as an ever changing thing. shes like a fish out of water (forgive the pun), as her entire life is defined by rules and absolutes.
also, and more pettily, azula is a traditionalist that actually adores the tech and metal of the modern fn age. where's her central heating?? what do you mean they only have a central fire for warmth?? she wants a SPA, NOW. shes a brat
#i realise now that their respective dislikes is just. like. their relationship w their bending applied on a wider scale#and also the perfect parallels between the two. sorry. i am unoriginal i fear#its just that i construct atla characters n societies by starting w their bending and exploring outwards#so the fire nation emulates all aspects of fire: it's passion of life and its need to be controlled to avoid harm#and the water tribe emulates all aspects of water: its fluidity and its fundamental relationship with the processes of the world#that then naturally translates to benders within those societies. and they're both intimiately shaped by the respective relationships w it#so. urrrrm. in conclusion#azula wants a spa and katara wants everyone to stop acting like her co-worker#azutara#azula#katara#atla#anon ask

what's up with political scientists and leo strauss? i had a polsci prof that was really into him and i hear it's widespread in the disicipline
if you’re a conservative in polisci/poliphil (and there are many) and thus don’t like Rawls or various non-liberal alternatives he’s sort of the main 20th-century thinker of reaction besides Schmitt or Heidegger and doesn’t have the “was an active Nazi” palatability problem

That moment when your students come up to you the morning after your late/missing work deadline to explain why they couldn’t do their ten missing assignments the night before when you’ve been warning them about the deadline since two weeks prior.
The dilemma?
You don’t want to be a pushover who doesn’t keep deadlines. Disicipline, to a certain extent.
But, you also don’t want them to fail. Ultimately, the desire for them not to fail takes over and you’re left, again, being the “yes-man” English teacher who takes missing assignments till the day before school ends.

Why Was Malvaron The Solon?
I was wondering why Nova Terron made Tazma, then later Malvaron, the Mysticons' solon instead of one of the adult astromancers. After all, that would likely ensure more disicipline. I came up with the theory that Nova Terron didn't see the Mysticons as useful, so therefore didn't need as much about training.
According to my theory, Nova Terron didn't think the Mysticons were worth the extra care for training, and didn't want to deal with kids, so he put astromancers that were teenagers in charge of the Mysticons. He may have felt like the realm was fine without them, and by putting a younger astromancer in charge of them, the adults can handle more pressing issues while the solon matures with the Mysticons, giving them an adult mentor when the Mysticons are adults. It wasn't until the Mysticons lost part of the codex, as well as the Dragon Disk, that Nova Terron felt as though he had to take the Mysticons' training more seriously.
I don't think this was meant to be a permanent thing though. I feel as though once the Mysticons matured, Nova Terron would start taking them more seriously, working with him the same way Alpha Galaga worked with the OG Mysticons. This is why he cared about knowing who the Mysticons were, and having some connection between the Astromancers and Mysticons.
I have more proof then just the age of the solons. Nova Terron allowed Doug to be Malvaron's assistant, while Nova Terron would probably not want Malvaron to change Doug's role normally. While I previously thought it was just Nova Terron showing compassion, it could also be Nova Terron not caring about the Mysticons' training, so it doesn't matter if the solon has an assistant. Also, while Malvaron was imprissioned by the Mysticons in episode 9, the Mysticons were allowed to be free. This could be because he blamed the Mysticons' failures on the lack of a good solon, making him take it more seriously by becoming the solon himself.
In short, I believe that Malvaron and Tazma were solons as Nova Terron didn't want to deal with teenagers. Once they matured, he planned on having a more active role.

True me.. Tap-1762..
Nobody wants to tell you why discipline is so important! Disicipline is the strongest form of self-love. It is ignoring current pleasures for bigger rewards to come. It’s loving yourself enough to give yourself everything you’ve ever wanted. Self-discipline isn’t about becoming a robot, it’s about developing the ability to override your momentary urges for the sake of your long-term goals.…

If they had any idea they could relate to one another they would find the the common ground was overwhelming. Clay's role mostly was to be the hand,...or belt even, of descipline. When he wasn't doing that he was getting drunk in his study and out of the way. It was sad almost, now Orel realizes the nature of his own home, that his father should see the need to drink himself stupid because he hates himself and that his mother should scrub the house top to bottom else her manner would completely fall through.
Orel hugs himself. No he's not able to protect himself or his brothers but he found indifference seemed to be soemthing that defused his father. Everything Clay did was for a reaction. Fear, anger, he'd take what he could get and he did. So if Orel didn't react to his disicipline his father grows tired. Still...it was far too late to protect the boy from his father. The damage has been done.
Still, swaying a little in his seat he affirms with a nod. ❝ Gee, that's kind of you, Haruto! ❞ Was it Reverend in this church? Golly he better be sure to get it right. ❝ I feel like I should return the kindness somehow.❞ The boy's smile is warm and bright. His world was hectic recently, yet he still found comfort in others.
He swallows the dryness in his throat at the mention of his parents. ❝ That's their focus right now...Dad only pays attention to me when he's lecturing me and Mom almost never even gives us her time. She's always too busy cleaning...though now they are both too preoccupied with fighting eachother. ❞ He pauses. ❝ You sure know a lot about this stuff. ❞
Oh. So it was a situation like that, was it? He wondered why people wasted their time trying to struggle through a life with someone that they couldn't stand. His own father and mother, he barely believed they cared about each other at all. The way the man existed in the background of his life and only seemed to consider his family an afterthought. The way it was his mother that got them up in the morning and dressed them and sent them to church. Discipline was his father's only role, but even in that he meant very little. And Haruto had wondered why he was even there.
This situation seemed to be worse than that. One or both of these parents were taking that feeling of dissatisfaction and allowing it to affect the lives of their children. This boy, who was so young and already saying things like he had, insinuating self-harm, perhaps. These types of people had no business being parents... They didn't deserve the children if they were going to neglect or abuse them. But things like this happened every day, so it wasn't as if he could be too terribly surprised by it.
"Ah, ,that is a difficult situation you find yourself in," he responded, "and not one you have an awful lot of power over. You cannot make them love each other, and odds are you do not have the power to protect yourself or your brothers from them... Not often, anyway. Yes. It is true that you should honor your father and mother, but that doesn't make it wrong for you to feel distress over the situation. Being dissatisfied with each other is one thing, but when they choose to allow their children to suffer because of that, they are not fulfilling their duties. They are meant to guide you and set an example, and I think anyone would agree that that isn't very indicative of proper behavior."
Haruto's eyes left Orel to follow his line of sight, up along the rows of pews to the altar where the conglomeration of angelic sculptures stood, though he knew the focus wasn't on anything in particular. It wouldn't be easy to protect him or help him, being under the thumb of his parents. But this was his establishment, and he could refuse people he felt were dangerous. He could at least provide sanctuary when it was needed.
"How about this? I might not be able to give you much of an out, but when things look as if they're getting truly dangerous, you should come here and take shelter in this church. I know you don't have much reason to trust me, but if you can somehow find yourself able, then you can trust that I won't allow any harm to come to you or your brothers while you're here. As for at home, the best advice I can give you is to simply keep your head down and stay out of their way. If it's truly each other that they have such a problem with, then they likely won't notice you very much unless you cause a stir. In a situation like this, it's often best to simply disappear into the background."

The Post That Used "Love" 25 Times
The Post That Used “Love” 25 Times
Tuesday’s Column: Dale Mail Dale Pollard Jesus loves us and that truth is found all through the Bible. The Bible teaches us to love others like Jesus loves us, but that’s only helpful if we understand the implications. “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in…

Making the writing muscles strong
Making the writing muscles strong
The #100daysofwriting got me thinking about writing a lot lately. About the craft of it, about the discipline. We can’t write in our heads only. We need to put pen to paper (or fingers to the keyboard). We need to see the words on page, see if they work. I look at photographers and see them taking hundreds of pictures to get this one frame they had in mind. I see ballet dancers doing the same…

Accountability... It’s yours!
I heard comedian Ron White say in one of his stand-up routines... How do you fix stupid? What' s interesting about this ironically funny adage is that it’s so very prevalent in our society today.
Look around you...it's everywhere. What's ironic is that it's appears to be tolerated, overlooked then acceptable... Why?
Is stupid just plain old ignorance? Is it deeper rooted? I sense that part of it is in general lack of accountability and simple laziness. Finger pointing, blaming of others, lack of ownership and constant/continuous shifting of position on issues, etc.
I sat in numerous meetings this week and this topic kept creeping into our conversations on system processes, management accountability and communication, setting of expectation, performance evaluations, etc., etc.
Why do we continue to repeat ourselves? Are we not communicating the expectation and the message? Why is 60-70% of the staff getting it, but the other 40% or so ... NOT.
One of the executives asked me point blank... "How do you fix stupid?" they continued by asking how did you handle stupidity while you were in the military?
I laughed, I couldn’t help myself... Wow, did she refer to her staff, our staff as being "stupid"? Chuckling I said... "accountability". Holding each of our staff members accountable. They may not believe in the mission, but they know what's expected and their peers will hold themselves and each other to that same level of accountability, was my response.
But, I believe there is a deeper issue with roots veering off in many directions. A matter that requires adaptable, flexible and focused leadership qualities with strong listening skills.
As a young enlisted man, I was fortunate to grow up in a system that perpetuated “Over Achiever Syndrome” or “OAS”, a term my wife coined about my need for over-achievement. I knew early on in my career that my efforts could and would impact my professional and personal growth. Looking past myself and becoming a good steward and good follower. It was this that propelled me into a commission in the United States Navy. Serving as an officer, only added to the experiences of leadership, followership, stewardship, mentoring and being mentored, etc. All of this tied to a handful of core values, one being "accountability".
I learned plenty of management techniques and garnered skill sets that have been my strengths and highlighted those that were my weaknesses. Constant growth, continuous learning, self-evolving and smart enough to know that "I don't know it all" and am willing to accept and make use of my inner understandings of self.
So, how does this tie into "Fixin' Stupid"... by understanding yourself and your ability. It is through you, and your efforts in creating an environment that holds your staff accountable and sets the expectation. It’s quite possible you will learn that the individual you're trying to fix just isn't fixable for many compelling reasons, such as:
· They don't desire to be fixed
· They just are suited for that particular role in your organization
· The expectation has never been shared with them
· They knew they were going to held to a level of accountability that they've not had prior to you
Set the tone… communicate the expectation… hold them and yourself accountable… and remember you can’t fix stupid!
